Kabushima Shrine

Mentioned on
Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Kabushima Shrine is a picturesque Buddhist shrine dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten, located on an island in Tanesashi Coast. The shrine was unfortunately burnt down in 2015, but has since been reconstructed and restored to its former beauty. The island is home to thousands of black-tailed gulls, making it a unique and memorable experience for visitors. Although the temple could not be visited during the reconstruction process, it can now be enjoyed by all who visit.
Good scenery, nice place, and lots of seagulls. It was little windy, I would recommend warm wind resistant clothes, espically gloves, during the winter months. They kept my hands and body warm and I was able to take some good photos! There is a shrine shop at the top that sells some very nice merchandise.

This shrine was certainly an experience like never before! We visited in early May, when the nanoha flowers were in bloom and the seagulls were nesting. There are SO many seagulls, which I thought was really fun to see. Its probably worth bringing an umbrella if you want to make sure you stay clean, but we were able to make it out unscathed. The view of the ocean is really nice, and the seasonal goshuin stamps are beautiful too!

Wow! What a sight. Grand display along this charming coastal line. The main attraction here is the dozens and dozens of seagulls that flock and nest here. However when I visited there was nothing but a peep! Maybe the birds were off on a holiday that day :) But if you're looking for a marvelous sight, this is worth a day trip out to see. Beautiful quiet sea In the distance as you get to the top of this shrine. The waves crashing in the distance feel gentle. And the ocean breeze causing the tall plans to sway like sea plants, is charming in itself.

(Translated by Google) A recommended place to stop when you go to Hachinohe. First of all, the black-tailed gulls are amazing! It's impressive to see a large group up close. Be careful of black-tailed gull feces. There is a plastic umbrella at the entrance to the shrine to protect you from droppings. I didn't use it. I went around the shrine three times and paid my respects. It's fun because you can see different kinds of black-tailed gulls every time you go around. Both the shrine and the black-tailed gull were divine and I felt like I had received a lot of divine blessings.

Beautiful shrine at a nice location! I visited this beautiful Kabushima shrine on an island, inhabited by black tailed seagulls on 11 August 2020 during my summer vacations with my Japanese friend. I loved the beauty and surroundings so much that I visited again by using train from hon-Hachinohe at 11:55 am to same station and then 15-20 min walk upto Kabushima shrine. I highly recommended to visit this beautiful shrine to anyone whoever visits Hachinohe or Aomori prefecture. The Kabushima shrine is a picturesque shrine located on a small hill surrounded by the sea. It is believed that the shrine enshrines goddess Benzaiten and for centuries local fishermen and townspeople have come to the shrine to pray for good luck business, fishing, and more. Access: By Car: 30 min from Hachinohe Station, 20 min from downtown, 25 min from the Hachinohe By Train: 15 min walk from the Same Station By Bus: Get off at the「Kabushima Kaihin Koen」on the Umineko Bus PARKING IS AVAILABLE! YOU WILL HEAR SWEET MELODY OF BLACK TAILED GULLS!!!! Leaving the JR Hachinohe Line’s Same Station and walking along the seashore, you’ll hear a squawking sound as a small island, linked to the land by a road, comes into view. This is Kabushima Island, designated a National Natural Monument as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls. Every year black-tailed gulls come here to raise their chicks from March until about August. The island is packed with birds, said to number between thirty and forty thousand. The black-tailed gulls have been important to Hachinohe since ancient times as they indicate the location of fishing grounds. They are associated with the goddess Benzaiten, who is worshipped at Kabushima Shrine. The birds are unafraid of people, allowing close observation. While you’re having fun with them, it might also amuse you to imagine the lives of fishermen in the old days. Highly recommended Cheers

If you're a bird lover, you might enjoy this more than most. Very dirty, noisey and smelly place when we visited. Birds were aggressive as young birds were only about 4 weeks old. Free umbrellas for protection are available.
Michael Knepp — Google review
"torii" also means "bird perch" but this is the first torii I found that looks like its actually perched on by birds. It looks quite attractive on top of the hill and provides a nice view but I found it difficult to find a good angle to show how nice it looks on the hill. Bus stop right in front of it, JR station 1 km away.

Normally, Kabushima Shrine is famous for attracting a lot of black-tailed gull. However, in August 2023, they are not there probably because of the heat. I made it to the shrine without an umbrella instead of that. It means poo didn't fall from the sky. This shrine itself doesn't have much character except them.
Gota Kuwata — Google review
Very cool Shinto shrine in a rock looking out over the port of Hachinohe. On a fine but blustery January day, the wind chill felt like -10⁰. Fortunately they were serving hot amazake at the top. We prayed, picked up a goshuin, and had some Amazake. What the guide books don't really show though is that the view back to the city is very industrial. In fact, petrochemical, which is not inspiring. Half an hour drive from Shinkansen station.

(Translated by Google) There are so many black-tailed gulls that I have to laugh When I parked my car at a facility called Kabunya and walked towards it, I heard a large number of black-tailed black-tailed cats crying. The wind was so strong that I couldn't use the free umbrella, but I wasn't lucky and it didn't fall from above. The number of black-tailed gulls is truly impressive. Make a lot of families, Nokimochi. It seemed like there were many children in pairs, perhaps because it was their turn.

My sister who stay in Hachinohe brought us to visit Kabushima Shrine situated at Tanesashi Coast in April 2016. It is an Island inhabited by thousand of black tailed gulls. It was an interesting and unforgettable experience to see so much black tailed sea gulls. Unfortunately, we cannot see the Shrine temple as it was burnt down in 2015 and it was being rebuilt. Will visit again when the Temple Shrine is ready. Recently in April 2021, my sister send me some pictures of the Kabushima Shrine already restored and it really enhanced the beauty of the place.

So many seagulls! The sounds of waves crashing on the coast and seagull chirping make it a very unreal scene, also like something only happen in your dream. I liked that day.

An unbelievable site to see! Beautiful shrine in Hachinohe nestled at the top of a hill on the Shore adorned with bright yellow canola flowers in May and surrrounded by tens of thousands of black tailed gulls. The shrine is frequented by business people praying for good fortune in stocks There's also a super cool Pokémon themed manhole cover if you're a fan. There's an information centre you can observe from, grab a coffee and marvel at this picturesque and very unique shrine. There's also a ice cream, souvenirs gift shop across the road - free parking as well! So worth a visit!! Its best to take an umbrella to avoid droppings!
Kim Mulligan — Google review
The shrine provides umbrellas to visitors for good reason and you better use them before you walk around under the flying seagulls! The birds are everywhere and sometimes they are startled and start rising up together and fly rapidly in circles making a lot of noise before settling down again. It is fascinating to watch. There are other interesting things to see in this area, such as the rugged rocks and sea views. A short distance from the Shrine is The Marient Hachinohe City Fisheries Science Museum which is also worth a visit.

Today I had the opportunity to visit the Kabushima Shrine in Hachinohe, Aomori. Despite the cold weather and snow, the shrine was truly breathtaking. The sun shone brightly, casting a warm glow on the shrine's grounds. I was particularly struck by the Japanese flag proudly displayed on the shrine's grounds. It was a powerful reminder of Japan's rich history and culture. Although there were no black-tailed seagulls to be seen today, I was still able to appreciate the shrine's serene atmosphere. The tranquility of the surroundings was a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I made a wish at the shrine today, and I felt a sense of peace and hope wash over me. I am confident that my wish will come true, thanks to the blessings of the Kabushima Shrine. I highly recommend visiting the Kabushima Shrine if you are ever in the Hachinohe area. It is a truly magical place that will leave you feeling refreshed and inspired. Additional notes: The Kabushima Shrine is located on a small island off the coast of Hachinohe. The shrine is dedicated to the god of the sea, and it is said to bring good luck to those who visit. The shrine is a popular tourist destination, and it is especially popular during the summer months, when the black-tailed seagulls are nesting on the island. The Kabushima Shrine is a beautiful and serene place, and it is a must-visit for anyone who is interested in Japanese culture and history.

This place is a famous spot to visit in Hachinohe. The shrine is stunning, situated in a lovely location with nice views, especially of the ocean. Beware for the seagulls and their droppings! It's just a quick 10-minute walk from Same Station.

(Translated by Google) Kabushima is said to have been reclaimed by the former Japanese military in 1945 and 1945, and was made into a connected island. In the center of the island is Kabushima Shrine, which enshrines Benzaiten and is worshiped as a guardian deity for business prosperity and fishing safety. In 2015, the shrine building was completely destroyed by fire, but it was rebuilt over five years with donations from all over the country. This place is famous nationwide because you can see black-tailed black-tailed gulls nesting up close. There are black-tailed gulls everywhere in the grand shrine. Not only can they be menacing during the child-rearing period, but their droppings are everywhere, so be careful both under your feet and above your head. In the unlikely event that droppings fly onto your body, you can get a ``good luck certificate'' at the shrine office. At the shrine office, you can purchase amulets and other colored goshuin stamps with different patterns every month. If you collect Goshuin stamps, be sure to stop by Kabushima Shrine.

(Translated by Google) It was my second visit. Since it was winter, there were no black-tailed gulls. Therefore, I was able to visit and observe the shrine calmly. It was cold but felt good! The view of the sea, the sky, and the clouds was so beautiful! When there are black-tailed gulls, there is an umbrella on the right side of the torii gate, so let's borrow it to protect ourselves from the black-tailed gulls (lol) If you still end up with a U○chi on your body, tell the shrine maiden that you have good luck and she will give you a certificate of luck. I received it on my first visit. I also received a wet tissue to wipe off my uchi, so I didn't get any stains and felt better! I thought it was a great idea that could change the mood of people who are feeling depressed due to being pissed. If you don't like birds, we recommend visiting in winter. It was a very nice place!

(Translated by Google) 2023.09.29 ・Due to the ferry, I visited the shrine first thing in the morning. The weather is extremely nice, and the Japanese flag is waving over Kabushima. ・The shrine building is located on a slightly elevated location facing the sea, so it stands out. ・There are no black-tailed black-tailed cats at this time of year, as it is not the breeding season for them. There is a lot of black-tailed black-tailed feces on the torii gate. ・This is a turnip object displayed in the shrine building. I hear that there are many people who come here to pray for better financial luck, such as rising turnips and rising stock prices. ・This is the shrine building. Since it was still a little early in the morning, the attached awarding office was preparing to open soon. ・The shrine building, which was rebuilt after a fire, is sparkling clean. From now on, the texture will increase with the sea breeze and black-tailed black-tailed feces. I also wanted to see the old shrine building. ・The shrine plaque and bell are shiny. ・It is said that if you walk around the shrine three times before visiting the shrine, you will have even better luck. Even more beautiful than that is the Japanese flag waving in the blue sky... ・After visiting the shrine, I received a goshuin stamp at the awarding office. There seem to be two types of goshuin, and this is the one that says "Kabushima Shrine." This stamp has an atmosphere of an illustration of a black-tailed gull and a shrine building. ・This is the second type of Goshuin. This is a company seal in the shape of a turnip with Benzaiten written in the center. ・The first fruits fee was listed as 500 yen for one type and 800 yen for two types. ・Kabushima Shrine has been introduced as one of Hachinohe City's representative shrines. It's not because of the size of the shrine building or the size of the precincts, but because it matches the scenery so well. It is one of the shrines that gives you a Japanese feel of the sky, sea, and black-tailed gulls.

(Translated by Google) The shrine is located facing the sea and is celebrated as the 100th anniversary of the breeding ground for black-tailed black-tailed black-tailed black-tailed black-tailed cats. Probably because it was not the season, there were only a few black-tailed gulls flying around. If you visit during breeding season, you might be able to see cute baby black-tailed gulls. It is said that if you go around the shrine three times, you will be happy. There were stone statues of the Seven Lucky Gods and zodiac signs dotted around the promenade, and it was fun to look at them and look for your zodiac sign.

Great hike with multiple trails and start points. Starting from the base of the mountain trail (parking at the Forest Pia center or other multiple parking lots), it took about 2 1/2 hours up and only 1 down at an easy pace. You can also drive further up the mountain and park and start there. At the end of May, the azaleas were not blooming yet, but the hike is still beautiful and there’s a great view at the top.

The bottom trailhead is right next to [Forest Pier Upstairs], so set your Google Maps destination to Forest Pier Upstairs or the parking lot a little south. If you are coming from the north side, the trailhead will be on your left. There is also a trailhead from the Tashiro Seseragi Park side. Halfway up is from the [Shirishidaira] parking lot. If you are not confident in your physical strength, you can reach the top by car, so it is better to climb from [Daikaidaira]. Restrooms and rest areas are available at both Shishidaira and Okaidaira, so you can rest assured. From the end of May to mid-June, you can see clusters of azaleas, and it gets crowded on weekends, so try to visit on weekdays. Because it was far away from large vehicles, I was able to use it quietly without worrying about the engine noise. There are a lot of bears out this year, so there were no trash cans, probably as a countermeasure against bears. The toilet is normal. However, it was difficult to use the hand-washing stations in the middle of the three hand-washing stations because the water doesn't come out easily, so I recommend using both ends. (Translated by Google) It's been a while since I visited. It doesn't seem to be as lively as it once was. The fact that the Sanriku Expressway is now fully open and that long-distance traffic no longer passes in front of it has definitely had an effect. And it's far from either of the town's two interchanges. In other words, it is no longer the original location of a "roadside station." With this, I can't wait for lunch time. It can't be helped since the only customers are from the neighborhood. Even the direct-to-farm stores seem to have a poor selection of products. In order to revive it as a roadside station, shouldn't it be relocated to a location immediately after getting off the interchange on the south side? I visited again in the afternoon on Saturday, January 21, 2023. It's quite crowded. Regardless of the frequency of visits, there are probably some regular customers.
