Caverns & Caves
The Longyou Caves are a collection of synthetic sandstone caverns that were constructed approximately 2,000 years ago. The origin and purpose of these caves remains a mystery to this day. They were only discovered by farmers in the 1970s after being submerged in water for an unknown period of time. These grottoes contain fascinating carvings on their walls, some of which have been created more recently by unknown individuals.
The Longyou caves were found in the 1990s when farmers drained water from the area and discovered steps going down. Eventually 24 massive chambers were found. Each cavern is near 11,000 sq ft. In total the structures cover 320,000 sq.ft. (5 football fields) The carvings look recent but were carved when the caves were built. There are no records of who carved out these caves, but it's believed to have been built during the Warring States period which occurred over 2,000 years ago. Amazing and beautiful.

The Longyou Caves are an enigma wrapped up in a mystery. They think they could have been carved out 2000 to 3000 years ago but they can't be sure. An amazing place if you get a chance to visit you should.

The Grottoes at Longyou are amazing, apparently flooded and completely unknown until discovered by farmers in the 1970's. I didn't understand why some more recent people had carved images in the walls.

Very interesting place, although there’s a reasonable chance they are quarry’s from the 18th/19th century. See what you think.
