Chōshōji Temple

Chōshōji Temple is one of three temples that have claimed to be the former dwelling place of the founder of Nicheren Buddhism. The temple boasts a magnificent view with four heavenly kings located around the Nichiren Jojin statue which stands in front of the main hall. Visitors are required to remove their shoes before entering and may participate in rituals such as obtaining a red stamp. Those seeking to prevent evil can also seek consultation at the temple.
Would recommend attending a service while in Kamakura. Great guys working there.

(Translated by Google) I came from Raigoji using Google Maps and ended up entering through a place other than the official entrance. There were several large statues in the precincts, and the atmosphere was very solemn. When I looked inside the main hall, I saw someone who looked like a monk, and when I thought to say hello, it turned out to be a doll (lol) (Original)

(Translated by Google) It seemed like a memorial service was in progress, and as I passed through the temple gate, I could hear the chanting of the Nan-myoho-renge-kyo sutra. In the square in front of the main hall, there is a huge statue of Nichiren Saint by Koun Takamura, famous for the statue of Saigo Takamori in Ueno Park. Furthermore, around the statue of Nichiren, the Four Heavenly Kings, Jikokuten, Zochoten, Komokuten, and Bishamonten, stand as if to protect the saint. It is said that Nagakatsu Ishii, the lord of this area, became a devotee of Nichiren Shonin, took the name Hiyoke, and built a temple within his residence in 1263. Nichiren Shonin wrote Rissho Ankokuron in 1260, and on July 16, he made a confession to the former regent Hojo Tokiyori. As a result of this, it was burnt down by a mob on August 27th (the first of the four great tribulations, the ``Matsubagaya tribulation''). It is said that just before that, three white monkeys appeared and invited the saint to save him. Taishakuten is enshrined here, and the white monkey is said to be revered as Taishakuten's messenger. I received the title in the basement of the main hall. (Translated by Google) I have come before to pick up ginkgo trees on the temple grounds with my father, but this is my first time officially visiting the shrine. The most impressive view of this temple is the statue of Nichiren Shonin standing in front of the main hall, with the Four Heavenly Kings placed around it. When I went around the main hall to my left to pray and receive a stamp, I found that I had to take off my shoes before entering. It feels like they are seriously working on exorcism. This time I only got the goshuin stamp, but if I have a chance, I'd like to come and ask for advice on warding off evil spirits. (Translated by Google) This ancient temple is said to have its origins in the hermitage built by Saint Nichiren during the Kamakura period, about 15 minutes by bus from Kamakura Station and close to the bus stop in front of Kotsubo Tunnel. When you pass through the calm and lovely Sanmon gate, you can see the main hall in front of you. In front of it stands a magnificent statue of Nichiren Saint. Although it is not often introduced in tourist guides to Kamakura, I could feel the atmosphere within the shrine grounds that conveyed the attitude and spirit of Nichiren, a saint who struggled to change the social conditions of the Kamakura period. The main hall, bell, and other areas are beautifully maintained, and I felt that the temple was well-maintained as befits a historic temple. It’s my first time visit a festival in Japan because when I arrive here Covid started. But I see a lot festival in TV or movies. And when I visit Ayame Festival it’s exactly as what I watch in TV. Especially the background music and the theme is so Japanese. When you want to enter there is a thermometer and a alcohol as Corona Prevention. And you don’t have to pay cause it’s free. But if you want to take a picture from the river you can pay for ¥1000 / person to take the boat. I hope I can visit it again next year. And I really wish for every festival start again like before. Hope these year will be more fun than 2 years before.

(Translated by Google) I went on a tour on October 21st, not for the purpose of iris, but to ride the rowing boat "Rofune" which uses a potter's wheel. Park the bus in front of Itako Station and head to Suigo Itako Iris Garden. It seems like there's going to be a Halloween event, and everyone is busy getting ready. The season for irises is June, so the leaves look like they have not been taken care of, and the scenery is lonely, with no shadow to be seen. The [Wind Sound Investigation] event was being held, and the park was decorated with colorful strips of paper and windmills, and there was a plan in place that would allow visitors to feel the sound of the wind with devices such as bamboo wind chimes and bamboo clappers. We wrote our wishes on colorful strips of paper and hung them on a string next to the river. There were eight people in one boat wearing life jackets, and the boatman was a woman. You can sit on the floor or on a small wooden chair. The wind is a little cold, but it's nice to hear the gentle breeze and the faint sounds of wind chimes and clappers. During the iris season, there seemed to be a huge crowd of people, but there were only 26 people in our group, and three boats were moving along the river, with the boats slightly staggered. The boatman will give you various explanations, then proceed from the pier, pass several bridges, return, and then head to the other side of the pier. It is a boat trip of about 30 minutes. You will probably be able to see a different view during the irises season. The parking lot is large, but be careful as some parts are difficult to find. In addition to special products from the Shikako area, they also sell a variety of products from Ibaraki Prefecture. We mainly sell agricultural products, but we also have a variety of meats and pickles. As is typical of Ibaraki Prefecture, there are quite a variety of dried yam. The souvenir area sells sweets, Ibaraki's specialty natto, and sake, so it's a good idea to stop by before heading home on the Higashikando. Handmade dorayaki is also a specialty and can be enjoyed in a variety of flavors. It is a roadside station that both tourists and locals can enjoy. I think you'll have more fun if you can find your favorite producers and businesses. I think you will be more satisfied with purchasing vegetables and fruits if you go early in the day.
