Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a renowned lakeside area with an established trail system, known for its domestic and migratory bird species. Visitors can experience the lush greenery of the region and witness the yearly arrival of migratory birds. The sanctuary offers visitors a chance to stroll through spice gardens and enjoy refreshing breezes from nearby tea plantations. Additionally, guests can listen to gushing waterfalls or watch traditional boat races.
Nice place to get close with the nature. As my trip was during off season, didn't see much birds. However got a surprising boat ride for an hour over the backwaters. Got glimpse of few birds and lovely sunrise. Definitely will go back during the season to catch more birds on to my camera. Great place for nature lovers.

You can enjoy a calm and serene atmosphere. There aren’t any other amenities inside the sanctuary. 100 Rs per person for a ticket is really inappropriate, there aren’t any facilities for that amount. The management also charges for parking, but there is any proper parking slots.

Amazing place for Nature lovers, There's a walkway where you can see birds with lush green forest and kumarakom back waters.. there's also boating near by sanctuary where the housing ⛵ cost 1000 rs and small boat costs 600 all you need is to bargain.. We went on a small boat costs 600

We went in the middle of the day, after being warned there wouldn't be any birds. However it was still a nice shaded walk out of the heat of the day. Took about 2 hrs to slowly walk out and less slowly back. Saw some birds too! There's one functional tower you can climb right at the end, after passing a closed one. From there you can see storks. Also saw kingfishers and other smaller birds, and lots of butterflies.
Chris Bing — Google review
Be prepared to walk around 3 kms and you might not even spot a crow or a pigeon 😄. The time of year when you visit is also key to spot the birds. At the end of the long walk, there is a watch tower which is rusty and if climbed carefully, you can spot some cranes and migratory birds perched on tree tops by the backwaters. Around 3/4 th to the way, there is a spot where you can take a break and it have a good view of the Kumarakom backwaters. It's a good walk for nature lovers.

This is a hidden gem. It's a great walk that leads to a nice viewpoint. A lot of bird sounds as you walk. If you expect to see birds, make sure you have a lot of patience as the birds are within the foliage. Good way to spend some time in nature. A nice, peaceful, enjoyable walk with a lot of bird sounds all around you. Highly recommended.
Ganesh Balakrishnan — Google review
There were no birds to watch even in the migratory season, we went at around 3 pm so your only hope to watch the birds is to come in early morning. You can see some birds if you climb the watch tower but they are very far. This is the view from watch tower.
Ketak — Google review
It’s a calm and quite place, would be an interesting visit if you would like to enjoy nature, be silent. We may not see birds during the day time but we sure hear them, sometimes often larges branches and leaves wiggle indicating a presence. The paths are well paved, some even with bricks and stones. There are many interesting seatings that happens to be branches and roots of different types of trees, which I really like. One side of the sanctuary is embedded with small streams that links to the lake finally. But the house boat engines that go through the lake seems really annoying to me personally. It is a heaven for all the asmr video enthusiasts. Some lucky people would be able to see turtles taking a sunbath on top of a old floating wood trunk putting their neck out, amidst a very few and minimal Sunrays that reach beyond the thick canopy and get a click, as they would suddenly jump back to the water. I guess they have some kind of motion sensing sensors. But there are a lot of contamination even though they have mentioned many regulations. Cleaning could be better. We can definitely see a lot of romantic youth here and there as they offer picturesque views ,so definitely a great place for a date. At the tip there is a small seating, facing the lake and have the sunset and hear the waves. When I went the watch tower was in extremely dilapidated condition as the stairs were almost rusted and extinct. The walk is almost 45 min one way so to and for it would be 1.5 hours. The park closes around 4:00pm. A boating after this would be great it costs around 800 for an hour in a sikhara boat

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary in Alappuzha offers a serene and natural escape for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. The entrance fee of 100 per head is quite reasonable for the experience it offers. The presence of a parking fee suggests that the facility is well-maintained and organized. The sanctuary is expansive, providing ample space for visitors to explore. The sounds of birds chirping add to the ambiance, although the actual bird sightings can vary. It's not uncommon to see a limited number of bird species on certain visits, as bird activity can depend on the time of day and season One highlight of the sanctuary is the presence of various small animals, which can make the visit even more exciting. The atmosphere, especially during hot weather, offers a refreshing and cool escape due to the lush greenery and water bodies. It's worth noting that the ban on plastics is a positive step for preserving the environment. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary also offers birdwatching towers, enhancing the experience for enthusiasts. The walking paths and trails allow visitors to immerse themselves in nature, making it a must-visit destination for those who enjoy outdoor activities and appreciate the beauty of Kerala's wildlife and natural surroundings.

This's the place for spending time with nature. You can walk through the forest for 2 hrs to watch and come back to the parking area. You are allowed to spend 2 hrs there for a ticket charge of Rs 100/head. Boating is the main attraction for tourists to enjoy the beauty of kumarakom. I suggest you to plan a visit considering the climatic condition of Kerala so that you can see migratory birds otherwise you will be disappointed.

Nice place to watch birds, but you have to visit morning or in the evening time. Finding birds is a herculean task here when you reach at offseason, but you will be delighted by the long walk through the forest. Parking facilities are good and ticket counters are exceptional.

Huge area with amazing stay location with backwater view. Bird sanctuary & boating. Went on a boat ride - Rs750 for an hour, available every hour. 10 capacity. Was a good experience & saw a variety of birds. It's currently under construction so some inconvenience is there in the roads currently. An awesome restaurant available with superb backwater view including fish. Buffet available.
Jacob Panicker — Google review
There are no birds here. Even there is, I didn't see any. Except a butterfly and 2 crows. The forest was so dense and it's really a cool place for walking. I like that they distribute waste baskets for bottles. PLEASE BRING BOTTLE OF WATER FOR A PERSON, it's a long walk and we get tired easily. It's mostly a place for romantic couples. Actually it is. The place is silent and calm.

Beautiful sanctuary to spend an early morning time. Must visit with patience to spot the birds. Nevertheless, it’s a beautiful place to walk around in the early mornings or in the evenings around 4/5 pm.

Go there during the season to spot the migratory birds. Currently watch towers are closed. Entry is free if you stay at Waterscapes resort. One will have to walk 4 kilometres through the sanctuary. It's a nice walk through the forest with a walkway and narrow bridges. This is a hidden gem. It's a great walk that leads to a nice viewpoint. A lot of bird sounds as you walk. If you expect to see birds, make sure you have a lot of patience as the birds are within the foliage. Good way to spend some time in nature. My experience at Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary leaned more towards a nature walk than a bird sanctuary visit. Despite extensive walking, bird sightings were minimal as they remained mostly obscured by the trees. The audible birdsong, while present, was overshadowed by a more vibrant experience at my resort. Disappointingly, the entry fee was ₹100 per person, along with a ₹30 charge for car parking, making it seem overpriced for the limited offerings. The watchtower was under maintenance, and the overall upkeep of the sanctuary left much to be desired. If you're seeking a simple morning or nature walk, it might suffice; otherwise, considering the cost and maintenance issues, I would recommend exploring alternative locations.

Kumarakom is a picturesque village in the Kottayam district of Kerala, India. It is situated on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the state. Kumarakom is famous for its backwater tourism, which offers visitors a serene and scenic experience of the Kerala countryside. Kumarakom is also home to a bird sanctuary, which is spread over 14 acres of land and attracts a variety of migratory and resident birds. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary was established in 1956 by the government of Travancore, and later developed by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. The sanctuary is a haven for bird lovers, as it hosts hundreds of species of birds, including the rare Siberian crane, the darter, the heron, the egret, the waterfowl, the cuckoo, the owl, the teal, and the flycatcher. The best time to visit the sanctuary is during the winter months, from November to March, when the migratory birds flock to the area. The sanctuary also offers boat rides, nature walks, and cottages for accommodation. My Google Map Review: Recently visited Kumarakom Backwater Lakes and its Bird Sanctuary last month and I was amazed by the beauty and tranquility of the place. The backwater cruise was a relaxing and enjoyable experience, as I got to see the lush greenery, the coconut groves, the paddy fields, and the local life along the lake. The bird sanctuary was a treat for the eyes and ears, as I saw and heard many different kinds of birds, some of which I had never seen before. The staff at the sanctuary were friendly and helpful, and the cottages were clean and comfortable. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who loves nature and wildlife. It was a memorable and refreshing trip for me.

Its a tourist attracted spot in kumarakkm, kottayam and is a good place to enjoy peace and nature. But nowadays birds are less and if we want to see some we need to walk for 30 minutes and more in to the forest. Visiting charge is also so high that they charge 100 rupees for indian citizens and more for foreigners.

If you can trek and having a mind to click birds pictures with a pro camera or love a walk through forest. This is the place for you. Well maintanied property. But entry fee is 100/ person excluding parking fee. Which is pretty high.

Kumarakom has very few places for site seeing, the bird sanctuary being one of them. The hotel staff suggested we go at around 7 am if we want to catch bird sitings. The sanctuary is approximately a 4 km walk to and from each. The walkway passes through the dense sanctuary and is a pleasant hike. Some of us made the mistake of not wearing full clothes and/or rain shoes. There are plenty of mosquitoes and if you plan on doing photography along the way, they are sure to come bite while you take your time to set the frames and click. Unfortunately we couldn't site any birds, only heard their voices. The last lag of the hike is a slightly difficult one. Till the last lag you will find a pathway of stepping stones and bridges where you may walk upon. In the last leg, however, there is none. You will be walking through swamps, mud and slippy roots. The last lag is also only for those who wish to go to the watch tower and finally see the birds from an aerial view. Thankfully we saw lots of birds on tree tops from the watch tower.

The place is actually good for walking, lake side view, and for some sort of adventure. Only thing that you can't see is birds. If you are lucky you can see some monitor lizards and turtle. The entry fee per person is 100 and 25 for car parking. Boat ride is available there.

Number of boat houses are there and we also booked one tomorrow

The length of Vembanad lake is around 96.6 km. It's width is 14 km. It passes from three different districts of Kerala. The water of the lake is dirty. You can hire a house boat if you want to do so, or you can hire a boat or shikara for moving around the lake. Normally one round takes around 2.30 hours and it costs around three thousand rupees. Don't hesitate to bargain. One night stay on a AC house boat costs around 7- 10 thousand rupees depending on the boat condition and your ability of bargaining.

Alappuzha, a town with canal, backwaters, beaches and lagoons, described by George Curzon, Viceroy of India at the start of 20th Century, as the "Venice of the East". Hence, it is known as the "Venetian Capital" of Kerala. Recently got a chance to explore the backwaters of Alappuzha in Lake Vembanad and it was a remarkable experience. Lake Vembanad is a very beautiful lake with small islands. Booked a day's houseboat services (10.00 hrs to 16.00 hrs) by Minar de’ lake. After getting an idea about the view through social media, I had some perception of the place but experiencing that beauty is really a very astonishing experience much better than my expectations. Delicious traditional Kerala food was served. Commendable efforts by the staff to make our trip a memorable one. And it really is a memorable Trip. Rooms and Boat was neat and clean and very spacious. Overall very good experience. Sharing some of the cherished views from the backwaters, Vembanad Lake, Alappuzha.

The Bay Island Driftwood Museum showcases an assemblage of distinctive sculptures crafted exclusively from driftwood. This cozy museum is shaped like a cylinder and houses an array of unique creations made from this natural, weathered wood. Visitors can marvel at the intricate artwork that adorns the walls, each piece representing the ingenuity and creativity of its artisan. The exhibits are carefully curated to spotlight the diverse forms and shapes that driftwood can take on in skilled hands.
From the exterior what appears to be a collection of simple drfit wood with relatable shapes, on a closer examination turns out to be a treasure trove of natures work over several years. Burried under the beaches of the islands of the Andaman Sea for hundreds of years, these pieces of wood went through the chisteling and polishing by natures forces. Small tsunamis churned them from the deep lying "nature's workshops" to these beaches. Ms. Raji Punnose's narration of her artistic perception of each exhibit which she painstakingly picked from these beaches during her work life in Andamans brings life to each exhibit. Her unique skill of finding meaning in these woods, her passion for educating visitors on these amazing artwork and her heartfelt gratitude to God for revealing these artifacts to her is soul touching. A great place for artists, nature lovers, geologists and travellers who cherish genuine stories.

Well maintained, convenient to reach, museum tour takes about 1hour.

Owned and managed by this couple Mrs.Raji and her husband Mr.Punnoose, this museum is one of it's kind and a must not miss one!! Mrs.Raji has collected all the 150 odd pieces over a 31 year period during their stay in the Andamans. As she passionately explains...these are wood pieces, big and small thrown up by the ocean during mini- tsunamis, in which she used to see figures ( God's gift, she calls this ability), drag them home, slowly saw out the extra unwanted part of the fossilized wood, clean up all the moss etc for the figure to emerge!! Lovingly preserved and displayed by her, she's won many awards for this unique collection.

We were fascinated by various artifacts at this museum. Ms. Raji Punnose's perceptive artistry brings the exhibits she collected from Andaman beaches to life. Came across the Bay Island Driftwood Museum while searching out options for a one-day trip to Kumarakom with friends. When I looked up the citations, the places seemed to be a viable visit site. Anyway, after the boating and lunch, both of which were very pleasant an enjoyable, we went to visit the Driftwood museum. As soon as we stepped in, we were fascinated by the displays and arrangement. Ms. Raji Punnoose, the Curator, took the trouble to welcome us and explain the different artifacts. She was previously a school teacher and the displays are all placed meticulously. You can see the hand of a teacher and the aesthetic sense of a lady in the museum. Just as a school teacher can see the potential in students and guide them to achievements, she was able to visualize forms and figures in pieces of formless drift wood. With adept hands and surely with the support and encouragement of Mr. Punnoose Cherian, the pieces of driftwood were formed into meaningful sculptures. I was left wondering, how so much life could be infused into lifeless forms of dead and rotting wood. Did not realize, we had spent so much time in the museum, because we soon reached the closing time. Came away, with the firm resolve to visit again and spend more time, since each display has a tale to tell. Hats off to the wonderful couple for the design and layout of this marvelous and interesting museum. This is indeed a must visit spot in Kumarakom, Kerala.

Kumarakom is a popular tourism destination located near the city of Kottayam (10 kilometres (6 mi)), in Kerala, India, famous for its backwater tourism. It is set in the backdrop of the Vembanad Lake, the largest lake in the state of Kerala. In January 2023, when Kerala was chosen by the New York Times as one among the 52 must-see tourist destinations in the world, Kumarakom got a special mention for its backwater tourism. Kumarakom has been declared a special tourism zone by the Kerala state government, as legislated for by Kerala Tourism Act, 2005. Development in the area is therefore now controlled by the guidelines written by the STZ committee. The Backwaters of Kumarakom, formed by the beautiful Vembanad Lake, is located about 17 kilometres from Kottayam in God's Own Country, the South Indian state of Kerala. Vembanad Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the state and is known worldwide for its famous backwater tourism. The Backwaters of Kumarakom offer a picturesque location that proves to be a perfect backwater destination for travellers who are persistently searching for one. The Vembanad Lake of Kumarakom is the starting point for backwater cruises in Kerala, along with Allepey. Formerly known as the Baker Estate and now developed as a Rubber Estate, Kumarakom is home to a diversity of flora and fauna. The lush green surroundings with tall grass, shrubs and countless coconut trees that line the horizon of the pristine lake are a treat to the eyes. Kumarakom has a moderate climate throughout the year. It is a balanced tropical climate, which has two monsoons-south west and north east. Some times heavy rain and some times summer. These are manly Kettuvellam Houseboats and Punting houseboats with 1/ 2/ 3/ 4 bedrooms to suit the tourist requirements. They are made of jackfruit logs and coconut fibre and you are bound to these boats cruising through the backwaters pretty much all the time. Some boats even have air-conditioning and massive sun-decks that can be used for family and corporate events. Most of these houseboats are operated using an engine. However, there are some that have a boatsman to sail using oars. The houseboats are categorized as Gold Star, Silver Star and Green Palm on the facilities they provide.

It's a paradise! Kumarakom Backwaters formed by the beautiful Vembanad Lake is one of the most popular and beautiful backwater stretches of Kerala. It has been listed by National Geographic as one among the select destinations in the world that one must visit at least once in their lifetime! The village of Kumarakom is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake. Kumarakom is a paradise of mangrove forests, paddy fields and coconut groves interspersed with waterways and canals with white lillies. Traditional country crafts, boats and canoes will take you to the heart of the scenic Vembanad lake by the side of which Kumarakom stands. The Tourist Village at Kumarakom in Kottayam offers exciting houseboat cruises and holiday packages. And for those who want simpler pleasures, which come without a price tag, there's loads of fun to be had fishing, angling or swimming.

Thanneermukkom Bund, located in Kumarakom, Kerala, is a remarkable feat of engineering that serves a crucial role in the area's water management system. This structure effectively separates saline seawater from the freshwater backwaters of Vembanad Lake, preserving the ecological balance. It also provides a picturesque pathway for boats and offers stunning views of the expansive lake and lush surroundings. Additionally, visitors can enjoy activities such as speed boating while taking in the serene atmosphere.
Great view. One of the best places in the locality for enjoying and spending time with your family especially in the evenings. The view there is really relaxing and captivating. There are activities like speed boating and all. Snacks and tea shops and some ice cream vendors are available there. Some other shops too. The tourism department could have made some more facilities there like hand rails for safety, some benches or seating facilities, level the ground, etc.

An exciting place for people who wants to see water bodies. Its spans more than a kilometer and maybe the largest one in Kerala. we can enjoy the mesmerizing beauty of water bodies and a bund separating one from another. we can drive through the road for a long time which is in between the water bodies and two to three stops are available where we can park our car and can enjoy the scenic beauty all to ourselves. Some small tea shops and ice cream outlets are situated in each stops. No fences or protection are available at stopping. NB- No entry fee. Parking are available in between.

Clean place. Good for one time visit. Many small snack shops present. Speed boating is the main activity here.

Nothing exiting it's like a lake view with lot of crowd and local eateries. Had spend around 5 to 10mins of time. It looks like a view from lake car parking. Tried ice creams from local vendors and didn't satisfy with flavours and taste.

This place is a clear example of how careless and vision less kerala government and related departments are. The place is so beautiful and the landscape is astonishing but it is not taken care of properly by authorities. It is a great place for night life by putting on some restaurants and basic facilities like chairs, walkways etc, instead only some ice cream shops and bushes there.

The Bund looks so beautiful and famous for fishing… Constructed as a part of the Kuttanad Development Scheme to prevent tidal action and intrusion of salt water into the Kuttanad low-lands across Vembanad Lake between Thannermukkom on west and Vechur on east….

Kilikkoodu Toddy Shop and family restaurant is a renowned establishment in Kumarakom, Kottayam district. It's popular for its duck curry and Pearlspot Fish dishes. The toddy making process is an art, with strong men climbing tall trees to extract sap from coconut palm flowers. While the menu may be limited for vegetarians, non-vegetarian options are highly praised by visitors.
Don’t judge a book by the cover, really interesting experience. We ended up ordering everything on the menu with a large group that we had. It was fantastic across-the-board. Super cost-effective.

The experience was new so As the fresh toddy. It's primarily a family food restaurant where the toddy is also served, not the other way around. The fresh toddy tastes odd at first then got used to it with food. The fish was great and cooked to perfection. Ample handwash basin were available. One area for the establishment to concentrate is on staffing enough for effective and efficient service.

Must try if you love non-veg Kerala food. They have non a/c huts and also a/c rooms. So suitable for all types of crowd. They don't have anything for vegetarians. So keep that in mind if someone from your gang is vegetarian.

Authentic shaap food experience we had. Don't look too much for cleanliness of surroundings ...Friendly staffs and we recommend order everything in the menu coz portion sizes are small and not everything is for everyone. We really liked pork and kakka items than any other. Didn't expected that before going there. So order everything prices are also quite reasonable for small portions.

They got plenty options for local spicy dishes that includes seafood and backwater dishes. They taste good compared to the other amazing options you can get in kumarakkom. Their dine in is a little congested. Although their service is great and I'm sure they'll help you with preparing food in your way.

Kilikkoodu Toddy Shop and family restaurant, I got a chance to visit this place for dinner on my trip to Kumarakom few days back. The place was located near my hotel and was suggested by Hotel staff. The place has private huts both air conditioned and Non-AC, I choose the Non-AC one as the weather was quite nice during my visit. It is a toddy shop so had to try the toddy, it was my first time to try the same it was nice but not something which I would be drinking again. For food I ordered Prawns, Fish & Duck with appam & tapioca. The food was tasty, and service was fast. I wanted to try the crab as well, but the staff told me that crab they use is not so fresh. So, stuck to things which were fresh local catch. The prawns and fish were the best, duck was too much bones for my taste. They served the food in less than 5 minutes which was very fast. The staff was kind and tried explaining the dishes to me. My bill for the whole meal was 1058INR which is quite cheap as per me. Though the place was quite basic, but the food was nice.

Being a keralite this is one of the best toddy shops I’ve ever visited in Kerala. They have renovated the premises with a/c family rooms recently and more seating. Their service and food are also great so you’ll find a lot of families pouring in on weekends. Unlike some other toddy shops, their toddy is fresh and tasty. If you’re new to the whole toddy scene, try fresh toddy from morning(9:30-11:30) or evening (7:30-). That’s when they get the freshest toddy. You can also ask for toddy from previous day which is stronger and tastes slightly different and more strong. Ambience : a/c rooms for family, non-ac rooms with fan, charging points, peaceful, just mind your business and focus on drinking and enjoying your vibe. Must try : tapioca with beef/ tapioca with fish.

If your travels bring you to Kumarakom, look no further than Kilikoodu Toddy Shop and Family Restaurant for an authentic dining experience. This bustling spot is a favorite among both locals and visitors, and it's easy to see why – the toddy shop curries are simply a delight for anyone, be it families or a group of friends. Not only do they serve traditional toddy, but the meals are also a hearty celebration of local flavors with options like fish, crab, and pork. Each dish tells a story of freshness and regional cuisine – the Karri fish fry is a showstopper with three generous pieces that you simply must try. It was truly a standout for me. On to the crab, the taste was strikingly different from what I'm used to, yet absolutely amazing. The pork fry with coconut pieces captured the essence of Kerala on a plate, and the fish curry? Just mix it into your rice for a mouthwatering experience that you'll hanker to relive. Aside from the food, the restaurant offers ample parking space, which is often a godsend in busy spots. The AC dining rooms are comfortable for those who prefer a cooler environment, while the traditional toddy shop rooms and the quaint small huts provide an immersive cultural experience. It's clear why this place comes highly recommended for a lunch stop in Kumarakom. Just a heads up – its popularity means it's usually crowded during lunch, but that's a testament to its authenticity and the high-quality food served.

This is a restaurant you may have to try for its authentic sea food items. The best among the lot is duck curry. We have tasted koonthal, but it was not that wow, though you may not be disappointed. My visit to this toddy shop and family restaurant was an interesting experience. As a teetotaler and vegetarian, my options were limited, with 'kappa' being the sole choice available. However, I understand that this establishment's strength lies in its non-vegetarian offerings, which my friends tried. According to them, some dishes were excellent while others were just average. While my dining choices were somewhat restricted, I can see the appeal for those who savour non-vegetarian delights.

I hold mixed opinions since I have visited better Toddy Family Restaurants in different parts of Kerala. Toddy was fresh but the food was made outrageously spicy 🔥🥵 I have a high tolerance level of spicy food but the pork, beef and fish were so spicy, it just derailed the experience. Service was prompt with good suggestions from the waiter as well. The Crab gravy was delicious with Kappa. Sad part is even the salad was doused in pepper powder 😄 For first timers...please do visit but with caution and emphasize on 'less spicy'!

Yesterday me and my friend had gone to this restaurant. We ordered duck roast and Karimeen Pollichathu. The duck roast was fine but karimeen pollichathu was an utter disappointment. We returned it for the oil used was I guess was too old and it had a bad after taste. We ordered Varaal fry and the it tasted the same. I myself took it back to the kitchen and asked them to taste it. The fish was fresh but the oil used was terrible. It had the same foul smell. When the bill came they charged us for the varaal fry as well. I asked them to make it half but the cashier was rude. We paid the amount and left without saying a word. I'm from Alleppey and I eat fish almost everyday. We know which is good fish and which is bad. People coming from outside of the district can be fooled by the exotic presentation. The health department must check into this matter.

Your tongue will love it, but your intestines will ask you why do you put me through hell... Everything in life has a yin and a yang. It's a family friendly toddy shop. Food is out of the world. Just epic. Very spicy 🌶 . So take care. Kappa is really good. The lobster masala is brilliant. Crab masala is mouth wateringly good. Definitely will come back. If you can't handle the spice. Do tell them to tone it down.

My latest visit to Tharavadu Restaurant in Kumarakom was a journey of highs and lows. This place has boasted a reputation as an incredible food destination, a toddy shop of renown, brimming with local flavors that tickled the taste buds and felt like a culinary hug from Kerala herself. Upon arrival, the warmth of Tharavadu's welcome was as comforting as the backwaters that cradle Kumarakom. The promise of a splendid meal seemed written in the smiles of the staff. However, as we settled in with the anticipation of a hearty lunch, a shadow of neglect began to loom over our experience. The fervor that greeted us at the door seemed to dissipate; we found ourselves abandoned, adhering to our seats with a growing hunger and an unwelcome sense of being forgotten. It took an age for our order to be taken and even longer for the dishes to arrive. It was as though the staff had no inclination to serve, their interest lost to a breeze we couldn’t feel. Each minute stretched, filled with the murmurs of other patrons and the scent of spices, teasing us with what could be if only the service matched the setting. Yet, when the food did grace our table, it was as if the sun broke through the clouds. The meals, traditional and true, were a testament to Tharavadu's culinary prowess. Vegetables, spiced and seasoned to perfection, told tales of the land in every bite. And oh, the star of the show: the Kari fry. It was nothing short of amazing. Each morsel of the fish was a crunchy, well-marinated delight that melted in the mouth, justifying the wait and reminding us of Tharavadu's esteemed reputation. In reflection, the contrast was stark—the impeccable taste of the dishes against the backdrop of disappointing service. This once-iconic toddy shop seems to be grappling with the balance of customer care and kitchen mastery. Tharavadu still has the power to call one back with the allure of its flavors, but a meal here may test your patience. Would I return? For the food, absolutely. For the experience, I find myself hesitant. Tharavadu, your culinary canvas is vibrant, but your service needs a revival. Here's hoping that this beautiful spot regains its harmonious symphony of delightful cuisine and attentive hospitality. .

A good reliable food spot for all visiting Kumarakom. This is a Kallushaap (Toddy Shop) so all the dishes will be on the hot and spicy side. Duck curry was decent with naadan tharavu. Beef fry was extremely spicy but still tasty. Kappa (Tapioca) was really soft and tasty. Fish was also pretty good. Appam was soft. Meals had really good veg accompaniments such as Avial, Thoran and Achar. The podimeen (Anchovies) was deep fried but tasted really good. Karimeen (Pearl spot) and Kakka (clam) was well prepared too. But what really stole the show and my taste buds was the awesome pork roast! Those who tried the toddy said it was on the sweeter side ( we had visited for lunch) . There are around two cottages with Air conditioning each of which can seat around 15 people. Other cottages are not air conditioned and there are around 3 or 4 of those. There is ample space for parking. Toilets were not that good. Wash basins are there in each cottage. There were 6 of us, and all this costed around 1.7k and our tummies were full.

This is on way towards kumarkom jetty points. Went there randomly. Place is huge, big parking area and various seating options. We saw a lot of families and tourist coming for lunch dinner here. Its a toddy bar to say but families flock there for their kerala style food. Ambience and seating is simple, menu is limited but authentic but let them know your spice level as food is quite spicy here. We loved the appams, chicken curry and prawns. Fish is also available and fresh as is surrounded by backwater. The best part is toddy which is so refreshing, authentic and hygenic. I liked it and would want to go back again anytime i am here. Pricing is quite reasonable and should definitelybe on your list if you are on this side. Loved it and must visit place.

The Kumarakom Lake Resort has already won my heart and this multi cuisine restaurant is a cherry on the top. The place is so so soothing. Beautiful experience. The Ettukettu from Kayamkulam has been brought here and set up in all its glory. Just had a lunch for 4 at the Ettukettu multi-cuisine restaurant at the Kumarakom Lake Resort. We were not staying at the property. Our order- the Karimeen Pollichathu (a couple), 4 Kerala porottas, a beef ullarthiyathu, the chicken palpizhinja curry, a Lahori murgh, a veg pulao, a paneer tikka and a couple of payasams for dessert. The food and service were excellent. Special standouts were the porotta, the Lahori murgh and Karimeen. My only complaint is that local classics ie- Karimeen Pollichathu and Duck Roast or Mappas is not on the menu! I do not understand why these delicacies are missing on the menu. Our total bill for 4 was about Rs. 8500/- Highly recommended.

Ettukettu located in Kumarakom Lake Resort, went for lunch at this restaurant during my visit in Kumarakom on a Sunday, our hotel person recommended the same. We got a table at the restaurant and opted for a lunch buffet. Ambiance: The resort is huge, and the restaurant is located near the reception. The place is surrounded by garden and even have water running from between the restaurant in an artificial canal though the water I wish could be clean. Service: The staff is polite and professional, they even made dal rice without any chilis as it was required for the child. Drinks: We ordered beer which was served chilled so no complaints from my side. Food: We had the buffet lunch; the spread was good. For starters they had prawns and samosas, they had multiple salads & Soups. For the main course we had choice of fish curry, mutton, and veg. along with breads to order. They even had Chinese option and the chicken in the same selection was very good. The best was the dessert section they had lot of options for the same including ice cream, Indian sweets, Cakes and puddings. Cost: Cost for our meal along with 2 beer was around 4000 INR which was not too expensive compared to the ambiance and food. Buffet cost for one is 1500 INR. Overall a good property and one can give it a try if you in Kumarakom.

Vembanad Bistro, located in Taj Kumarakom, offers a delightful dining experience with its delectable a la carte menu and buffet options. The masala prawns, chicken biriyani, Neymeen pollichathu, and tender coconut souffle with tender coconut ice cream are highly recommended dishes. The ambiance is charming as the restaurant faces an artificial lake. Chef Manoj Pandey's hospitality and culinary skills add to the overall experience.
VEMBANAD BISTRO in Taj Kumarakom, I visted them on 10th May for diner with my wife and kid. The place requires reservation so please get one if you are not an inhouse guest. For dinner the place had a buffet, we were told ala cart won’t be possible, so we opted for the buffet. The spread was not too big, but the food was nice and tasty. My review for the same is as below: Ambiance: The place is made as a shack, so it is open on sides and faces the artificial lake created by Taj. Overall, I liked the ambiance of the place and special for dinner time they arranged a small performance of Bharatanatyam which added to the ambiance and made the experience better and more cultural. Service: Though it was a self-serve buffet but the staff taking care of us Mr. Rajneesh was very kind and helpful. He made us comfortable and always happy to help. For the kid they didn’t charge the buffet and let us order anything we liked for her, which is as per Taj hospitality a great thing to do. Drinks: We just had beer which was served cold and accompanied with some spicy tapioca chips. Food: The spread had two types of soups, in starters they didn’t had anything besides bread which was bit of a letdown. The main course had a good variety for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, my favorite items were Fish Curry, Mutton Rogan josh, Appam, Baked Vegetables. Price: The cost for our dinner along with 3 beer was 5000 INR which I feel was value for money for the service & experience I had. Overall, I recommend the place for anyone visiting Kumarakom area, it has a very good vibe and defiantly would be a good option for dinner or lunch.

Ambience is nice if you are ok with the occasional mosquitos. Service is good, but understaffed, hence not so fast. Coming to the main thing, the food. It is bland and not authentic spicy Kerala cuisine. The portion sizes are small too as you can see from the images. Whatever the menu items are priced, but for such small portion sizes, it is not worth it.

Ok 3 star coz Taj has a reputation to keep and I must admit I have never rated a Taj property so low, why I am doing so inspite of the wonderful service offered by the restaurant staff is coz of the quality of food served. Had ordered karimeen pollichathu and rice for my wife and chicken burger with bacon and fries for myself. Though the seafood was good the burger was mediocre. Not to mention it took forever to deliver. Otherwise the ambience was good, we sat in the outdoor restaurant next to the pond.

Do advance booking for dining. À la carte is better than buffet. I tried masala prawns, chicken biriyani, Neymeen pollichathu as Catch of the day and tender coconut souffle with tender coconut icecream-all were delicious. Chicken biriyani was flavourful, chicken was very tender and juicy. Masala prawns were crispy outside and tender inside with prefect spices. Neymeen pollichathu was my favorite among all. Tender coconut Souffle was so pure and delicate and melted in my mouth. The ambience is very serene.

The restaurant / coffee shop in Taj Kumarakom with a view of their lagoon and a superb ambience. Of course, there is the Taj hospitality that makes it an even better attraction.

Chef Manoj Pandey bowled us over with his heart warming hospitality and lip smacking food. We visited the restaurant for our wedding anniversary on 9th September for lunch. Chef Manoj was introduced to us by the GM of Taj resort and spa Kumarakom Mr Saneej who is a gem and a thorough professional. We interacted with chef Manoj on phone prior to our visit and he understood our needs. He curated a special lunch for the occasion . Every dish from the soup to the starters and the main course and the dessert platter too was finger licking good. Chef Manoj is passionate about food and is a perfectionist, innovative and hugely talented. For example he had made us a hara bhara kebab which was melt in the mouth and non greasy. Thanks to him we had one of our finest wedding anniversary celebrations. The ambience of the restaurant enhanced our overall experience. Thank you Manoj once again and our special thanks to all the restaurant staff who pampered us.
