Outdoor Activities
The Kuniga Coast is a popular destination that offers breathtaking views of the ocean and coastline. The area boasts magnificent cliffs, sea caves, and beautiful rocks that make it an ideal location for filming movies. Despite being somewhat difficult to access, it is worth traveling to this small island where friendly locals can be found. Tourists can rent bicycles from the harbor's tourist office to explore the scenic spot conveniently.
Enjoyed light trekking from Kuniga to Matengai, and back to Kuniga. Basically it’s hard, steep hill to Matengai, so highly recommended start from Kuniga, not from Matengai. But because of the magnificent scenery, I recommend you to visit both in the morning and see sunset in afternoon as well.

This is total dreamy place with beautiful rocks. It could easily be a set for next disney or Hollywood movies. Just go and check out. Those rocks will amaze you.

Amazing experience. It didn’t feel like I was in Japan. It’s not too accessible but worth traveling. Small island with friendly people. You can rent a bicycle at a tourist office in the harbor.

The entire west coast of Nishinoshima Town is overwhelmed by the beauty of nature, with large cliffs and strangely shaped rocks rising due to the intense sea erosion of the Sea of Japan. You can enjoy a magnificent view of the ocean. There is a promenade from Kunigahama to Matengai, and the view of the Kuniga coastline from the sea is also spectacular. Therefore, the climbing sections are actually quite steep, but the overall road condition is quite good. There is almost no shade in the entire section of the road, so be sure to pay attention to sun protection and hydration. Lookouts
Matengai Cliff is a stunning location with tall sea cliffs and breathtaking views of the rugged coastline. The area offers a trail to the shore, making it perfect for hiking enthusiasts who love amazing scenery. While there is no public transport available, visitors can rent bicycles or cars to reach the spot. The road leading up to the cliff is steep and challenging but worth it for the stunning views at the top. Hiking from either direction takes about 1.5 hours at a slow pace.
Amazing hiking /walking spot, easy to do for beginners. Make sure to watch out for the cattle that grazes there, the land is used as pasture and the "human visitors" are the guests. The amazing scenery is definitely worth the effort of reaching this place. No matter how many times I visit I find myself charmed with the view again.

Breathtakingly gorgeous! Feels worlds away from the Japan you're used to. One of the most beautiful scenic spots I've ever seen in Japan. Will have to come back in a summer season to experience the island when everything is lush and green. Loved it.
Micaela Braithwaite — Google review
Once in a life time experience. If you like hiking and amazing scenery view, you should definitely visit here. They don’t have a public transport to reach here and it’s very far from the port. So waking seems unreachable. But you can rent a bicycle or a car. The road from the port to cliff is very steep, even if we are sitting in the car. You can choose to hike from bottom or from the top, it takes about 1.5 hours (slow walk).

Amazing shrine, really old huge pine tree, amazing atmosphere and unique carvings. A must visit, although it takes some effort to reach.

This shrine is actually on the site of the central cinder cone that formed the Oki-dozen islands. The shrine itself is built into a cave (possibly an old vent?) and is simply gorgeous. There are little shrines all over the area that should be visited too. They recently improved the path up the from the parking lot too!

(Translated by Google) You can hike from the Meitian settlement at the foot of the mountain to the trailhead, or you can take the forest road next to the fire kiln by Gengxi River, bike or drive up the mountain. There is a small parking lot and simple pavilion next to the trailhead. There were many bamboo poles in the pavilion. After I got down the mountain, I thought that these bamboo poles might be borrowed by hikers. On the way to the mountain, I saw a small snake on the trail. In addition, although I did not go to the top of the mountain this time, It looks like the grass is thicker on the branch road leading to the top of the mountain. This is not a popular sightseeing route, so there should be many opportunities to encounter some wild animals. The path up the mountain is paved with concrete steps at the beginning. After reaching the torii gate in front of the shrine, it turns into a gravel road in the direction of the shrine. The side road leads to the top of the mountain. It looks more sparsely populated, somewhat similar. Humans often trample on the path, so the grass next to it is very thick and it is very close to the trail. Trekking poles or the bamboo poles at the trailhead should be necessary equipment. After passing the torii gate, you will first pass by the social affairs office. When you first see the social affairs office, it is a pile of huge stones similar to the base of the castle tower. It feels very special. There is a restroom at the Social Affairs Office, which is located in a very Japanese-style building. There is a Wi-Fi hotspot here, which is really a super considerate service. Going further forward is the shrine itself. It feels like after passing through the tunnel, the sun shines down on the shrine and you finally see it.

Onimai Lookout, located in Nishinoshima Town, is named after the strong winds known as "oni" that dance through the area. Visitors can ascend to the observation deck from the parking lot and take in stunning views of the Sea of Japan and distant mountains of Honshu. The surrounding area is home to grazing cows and features a unique rotary farming method from medieval times.

When I asked the man at the counter about sightseeing plans without using a bicycle, he kindly gave me some advice. Also, the taxi driver explained the situation to me, making it a very comfortable and wonderful trip. (The taxi driver was also a nice person) I was able to leave my baggage at the counter for 200 yen (as of July 2023), so I didn't have to carry heavy items. We recommend taking a taxi to Matengai Cliff and walking for about 100 minutes to the bus stop while taking photos. You can see Matengai Cliff, Tsutenkyo Bridge, wild horses, wild cows, heavenly world, etc., and it left a strong impression on me! Arrive by boat around 10 o'clock (I think you can get there until 11 o'clock), take a taxi for about 30 minutes to Matengai, and return by bus at 12:58. Take the high-speed boat departing at 14:12 to the mainland. (There may not be time for lunch... but it might be nice to have some sweets.
