Lansdowne

Lansdowne is a hill station in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand. It was founded as a military garrison under the British Raj, and the Garhwali Museum traces the history of the Garhwal Rifles regiment, which still trains in the town. Close to colonial-era St. Mary’s Church, Tip-n-Top viewpoint is perched up on a ridge overlooking forested hills. Hindu devotees worship Shiva at the centuries-old Kaleshwar Temple.

Forestry service
The Kalagarh Tiger Reserve Office, located near Lansdowne in Uttarakhand, is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Nestled in the heart of the Terai region, this sanctuary boasts diverse flora and fauna, including various bird species and iconic animals like Bengal Tigers and Asian Elephants. Families can enjoy nature safaris to explore the reserve's attractions. Visitors can also admire beautiful birds such as the Slatey-headed Parrot and Himalayan Bulbul while experiencing the tranquility of the forest.
The tiger reserve is full of natural flora and fauna. There are many beautiful birds that you will see. Some truly magnificent. I came across a Slatey headed parrot, a bird with a really long tail whose name I can't remember, himalayan bul bul and many others. We didn't see any tigers though - disappointed. The forest is relatively quiet and peaceful. There is a beautiful river in the Middle of the jungle and crossing that river on a 4×4 was a thrilling experience. The beautiful forest is lush green, but extremely cold - wearing appropriate winter apparel is necessary 2-4°c during winters. The trees are also fascinating, I'm glad I had this experience.

Churches & Cathedrals
St. Mary's Church in Lansdowne is a serene Protestant church established in 1896 by Col. A.H.B Hume of the Royal Engineers. The church now serves as a museum showcasing multimedia exhibits on local military history, including a picture gallery and a 10 minute documentary on the histories of both Lansdowne and Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre. Located near Tip-In-Top hill point, it offers free entry to visitors on weekends only.
This church is filled with peace and tranquility. It was built in the 18th century. Earlier a video of the brave Garhwal Regiments were often shown for 10mins by a projecter film. But now it's discontinued due to covid norms I guess. Surrounding the church is pine forest which keeps the temperature inside the church cool and soothing to some extent.

It's a really small old church which is I would say not maintained really well how it should be. It has been converted to a museum now. You will find a little description board about some history of the church and inside the church walls, you will find some old pictures during British era when some marriages happened during that time. This church in one the way to one of few tourist spots and so you can stop by and spend few minutes here.

St. Mary's Church, Lansdowne Entry Fee: None. We got the free entry. Visited on Saturday. It was open for all. Location: At a distance of 2.5 km from Lansdowne Market. Near Tip-In-Top hill point of Lansdowne. St. Mary's Church was built by Col. A.H.B Hume of the Royal Engineers. Construction of this Church began in 1895 and was completed in 1896. (I have covered a brief history in the photos). This church was closed after 1947 and was later converted into a museum by the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre. This Church has a picture gallery and a short 10 minute documentary on history of Lansdowne and Garhwal Rifles is played. Note: It is open only on the weekends.

No entry ticket. You can visit within the operational hours any time. And read about the church you will be astonished to know some facts. You can walk the distance from Lansdowne market or take a cab but enjoy the trail and choose to walk. If you are walking and visiting around evening be sure you are back to market before sunset to beware of wild animals. The church itself is beautifully built. Also ring the bell at entry and enjoy the moment. I don’t know if washrooms are available at this place.

I would say being a Christian that this church is awesome. Although space is less but how it is managed and cleaned that matters. You can visit here in morning hours and can spend some valuable time in here, you will definitely get inner peace. Time slots are there for opening and closure. Side view to this is very beautiful and I believe in rainy season it is more beautiful. Do visit if you are going towards tip-n-top.

Most ancient temple near the cantonment township. Maintained by the army. One has to pass through very narrow lanes from the market area to reach there. But walkable distance from the Lansdowne market. Some cemented steps have been made to reach the temple.Nice cool place for worshiping Lord Shiva.
