Katsuo-ji is a serene Buddhist temple and garden that has been in existence for centuries. It is renowned for its dazzling autumn colors and thousands of red Daruma dolls. This hidden gem, nestled in the mountains, makes for a perfect pit stop if you're out on a motorcycle ride. The temple's courtyard boasts an expansive area with a charming carp pond and numerous miniature "darumas" tucked away on the grounds.
This a nice hidden Wonder in the mountains. If you are riding a motorcycle this is a great place to stop by relax. The courtyard are is very open with a carp pound, and many mini "daruma" hidden on the grounds. Many people will come here to pray for victory for test, tournaments, and overall victory in life. It is 400 yen for entry and just an absolute pleasure to visit.

If you have some time in Osaka, I would definitely recommend this place. The garden is beautiful and well maintained. It’s actually huge ! The little darumas all around the place makes it really unique. The only issue is actually getting there (in our case we came by car, with the parking lot at 500¥)

A pleasant diversion on the city fringe. Gardens and paths are pretty. The usual Buddhist icons. There are, however some lovely historical trails to explore in the local area.

Nestled in Japan, Katsuo-ji Temple offers a tranquil escape where nature and spirituality converge. The unique feature, a sea of Daruma dolls, symbolizes wishes and goals, creating a captivating visual tapestry. It took us 2 hours to get there but totally worthy. Highly recommend!!!

This is a great place with amazing surroundings and traditional structures... You will feel that special vibe after you enter the temple ground. One of the best places around Osaka to see Autumn leaves. Now it's the best time to visit by these days (11/25, 26,27......) But please take note that the main gate is still under repair so you might not be able to enjoy the full experience. But still it's a beautiful place... And also you can see night light illumination as after around 5pm (visiting day : 2023/11/25)

A fun place to go especially if you have a wish/goal you're trying to pray for. It is in the mountain and in a remote place, so it's quite inconvenient to visit there though. From Senri-Chuo station, it takes about 25min and by taxi, it costs just over ¥3000. The bus is very infrequent, so make sure you check the timetable before you visit.

Fantastic place to come and escape from the city. It is cooler up in the hills of Minoh, especially when there is a sudden thunderstorm that adds to the feeling of the place. Ample parking if you come by car, but a little bit expensive, we paid about 700 yen for about 2 hours. Entrance prices are pictured below. Someone else commented that it doesn't have the feeling of an old temple and that is pretty fair but this temple and its grounds and extremely well looked after and are a photographer's paradise. There are small Daruma scattered all over the park and it was great fun for the kids to try and find the ones that were well hidden or swimming. The ajisai [hydrangeas] were in full bloom and offered a wonderful splash of colour and contrast. A yakubarai [exorcism] ceremony was taking place as we were walking around the grounds and it was played through the speaker along with the druming. So although it does not have the feel of an old school temple it still functions as one.

An absolute beautiful place to visit. It’s located in the top of mountain so you feel it’s fresher air in mornings. I do recommend to go in mornings. It’s going to be much hotter in the afternoon or so. Little red “Daruma” dolls are everywhere that are super cute.

Above my expectations. It was located at mountainous area so you will have some scenary with the bus journey. Though it is winter, I still feel it is worth to go. The place is serene as not many tourist. Osaka is mainly city landscape. If you want to have some natural, must come here. A nearby trekking trail is to a water fall Minoe, which is awesome during autumn.

It's good time for Momiji. I love to come here every Autumn. So many people visit here in Momiji. I need to go early morning otherwise i'm stuck in the traffic jam or there's no parking lot.

One of the most beautiful Buddhist Temples outside of Osaka City. The exquisite architecture and serene views are worth the trip. You can rent a car for the day to journey up the mountain to visit this historic landmark. This unique location offers a great view of the city. Do not forget to buy your Dauruma Doll, make your wish, and place it wherever you want throughout the grounds.

Lovely shrine tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Osaka. There is a bus that goes to the shrine but there aren’t a lot of times. Make sure to figure out your schedule as you will want to give enough time to explore the area and make it back on the bus or else you will need to call a taxi or take a really long walk.

What a greatest and amazing view, is my favourite attraction ever. Many size of Daruma dolls, bus fare 520per trip payment by ICOCA, entrances ticket cash 500yen. Always remember to check the timetable or you will miss the last bus.

The entrance fee is JPY500. The guide signal is very clear, bringing you to walking around the whole temple with around 1 hour. The car parking fee is JPY500 for 1 hour. Lucky that I can see many kinds of Sakura there.

A must visit place. It has amazing views, paths and gardens. You can enjoy culture and nature at the same time. You can get by bus, be aware of the schedule because they don’t pickup so often.

To get there have to get on bus. It only leaves every 1 hour so if it’s full you can’t get on have to wait next. It’s just anticlimactic. Scenery is great.

Famous in little red book. So many people and so many little buda figures. You can only go there with bus if not having a car. The bus is few so please check the timetable before you take it. And be the bus stop earlier since too many people want to take it.

This by far is one of the most beautiful Temples in Japan that you could ever want to visit. Located within the mountains of Minoh. There are many reasons to visit, such as the beauty of the buildings, the views, and the people, and on the right day peace and quiet. They have a number of events and they do get extremely busy with coach loads of tourists, particularly at the weekends. So check their website first. The best way to get there is to hike through Minoh national park from Saraike park, it takes around 1.5 to 2 hours but it's worth the time. The view walking down the steps from the mountains and having the first sight of the Temple is breathtaking. Give yourself at least 3 hours minimal to see everything this temple has to offer. They have a great gift shop, seating for resting and drinking, there is no cafe just drink machines. If you come by car be prepared to wait if there is an advent happening, parking is not free, you can get a bus from Minoh station and back.

Easily one of the best highlights of my trip to the Kansai area. I was a bit nervous if we were able to make it to this temple at first as there’s not too much information online about public transport, directions, etc. But we made it with the help of Google Maps and also the bus timetable I found online for an easier return via bus to Senri-Chuo back to Osaka. We trecked here with my kids and their grandparents and I wouldn’t say it was an easy treck as part of it needs to be walked on the road, shared with cars but most of the vehicles driving by were cautious of pedestrians. Once we arrived, it was such a relief and it was also a stunning place to be! It was so aesthetically beautiful and different to other temples as it was filled with the little darumas. Our kids wanted to bring one home with us, which we regretfully didn’t end up doing. When we arrived, they had a special event where you collect the darumas hidden, they give you a bag of castellas (little custard filled puffs) for free which was such a nice little bonus!! It was also much less crowded here compared to other temples and more local Japanese visitors than foreigners here. I’ll be sure to visit again in the future, it’s become of of my most favourite places in Osaka!
Ashley Nicol — Google review
Getting there can be quite a challenge as the bus to go there are almost always full of visitors but once you get to the place, it’s simply amazing. The cool weather compliments the amazing view so much and upon entering the place, you’re greeted by tiny darumas which gives the place a unique and quirky vibe that sets it apart from other temples. 10/10 would recommend.

Hattori Ryokuchi Park

Nature & Parks
Hattori Ryokuchi Park, located just a short train ride north of Osaka city, offers a unique blend of traditional rural architecture and modern recreational facilities. The park features an open-air museum showcasing traditional residential architecture, including the iconic gassho-zukuri houses of Shirakawago. Visitors can explore the expansive grounds, which include two barbecue areas, a flower park, and a concert amphitheater.
Big park, beautiful flowers, nice public facilities.
husnul hayyah — Google review
The Japanese Folk Houses Museum in Hattori Ryokuchi Park is an architectural and cultural museum that relocates and exhibits typical 'minka' houses from the north-east to the south of Japan. Minka refers to the houses of the common people. Most of the houses on display here are farmhouses. Due to the long length of the Japanese archipelago, the climate differs greatly between the southern and northern parts of the country. As a result, the shapes of minka and the construction methods used vary greatly from region to region. In this minka garden, visitors can compare and learn about these regional differences. Minka is not very decorative, but you can feel the Japanese view of nature in the primitive and elegant appearance of the wooden structure.

Water land is amazing, it was great time with family. We visited on weekends and it was fully crowded. Children of all ages from 2 to 14 can enjoy the water pool in hot Summer. It was not even costly as adult ticket is 1050 and kids 520 approx. Overall it was good experience.

Wide open area of greenery in the middle of Osaka. Lots of people and family in the weekend but you will not find it is packed since the area is so wide. Fun activities can be found here such as street bazaar, gardens, campings, barbeque, children playground, and many more. Very recommended place to have a healing.

I do jogging there. It is a good place for that if you circle around it with lot of shade, same if you just want to tbke walk. There is even a small bamboo area. If you go inside the park on evening the central plaza kind of become skater territory. Big playground to kids. So not so many shade if going in the center.

Ibaraki Kasugaoka Church (Church of the Light)

Mentioned on
Protestant church
Sights & Landmarks
Churches & Cathedrals
The Ibaraki Kasugaoka Church, also known as the Church of the Light and designed by Tadao Ando, is a contemporary Protestant church. The main chapel features a concrete wall cut with a cross and requires reservations for visitors. While the architecture may be underwhelming, Ando's formal language is evident in the attention to detail and materials used in its construction. Despite interesting moments within the building, some may find that it lacks an emotional experience beyond its formal design.
I'd like to say to understand the context of the church and the village by walking there for only 10 minutes I know some people can be disappointed when they see the first time. The outside of church doesn't look awesome. (Because of many reasons, the inner tour is stopped. Nevertheless, I love it) However, I believe the church harmonizes well with its surroundings; many cozy houses with second floors. The church is only a church for this town, not a landmark like the effeltower in Paris. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it while enjoying its context.
adug930 — Google review
This place is still closed due to Covid and it is impossible to make a reservation. According to their website, there are no exceptions. The church would have done an excellent service to mark their venue temporarily closed on Google Maps to save potential visitors the effort of visiting only to find a closed place.
Martin Schulze — Google review
I hope to be able to change this review someday, but am not buying the current excuses as why people can't come to worship (as well as tour). You can easily charge for tours during the week—making money for the upkeep and paying employees vs. volunteers. This is one of the world's most important architectural sites and to simply say "We don't have enough volunteers" seems thin. Visitors would gladly pay 5-10€ for a tour, which would solve all of the current excuses being given. But a real shame that such a spot is left there unattended.
Aric S. Queen — Google review
It was disappointing not to be able to go inside, however the church was still worth visiting. I really enjoyed visiting Tadao Ando’s famous building which inspired many of my early projects as an architecture student. I recommend making the trip here if you can
Cassandra de Stigter — Google review
Beautiful piece of architect. Todao Ando is a genius. His attention to detail, angles, light and materials is extraordinary. It was a trek from where we were staying in Kyoto but soooooo worth it! You need a reservation to visit so make sure you look into that before going. Amazing!
Yelena Svetlitskaya — Google review
Visiting this church can be troublesome since you have to have a reservation. In terms of the architecture, it's underwhelming. Ando's greatness lies in the formal language that he created. No doubt that this church has lots of very interesting moments, but when it comes to the actual experience of the space, especially inside of the chapel, it didn't give me any feeling at all. Everything about this building is formal.
Yibin Yang — Google review
Get a reservation on internet is better, and every tourist is asked to donate at least 300JPY to maintain the church. The Church is fantastic.!
Jeff Tian — Google review
The Church is not open for the public anymore, because the tour guides are "aging". So sad they are too lazy to find younger tour guides for this unique architecture - or just open the doors like European churches. According to their website even on sundays nobody comes anymore, because the believers are too old. "WE ARE TOO OLD, SO NOBODY SHOULD SEE THIS PLACE ANYMORE."
Leo Palm — Google review
The design is smart, lets light inside the chapel all around, we enjoyed the space. However on the website it was stated that booking is compulsory, and when we walked in nobody wantes to check our booking details so that was a little weird. Every guests were asked to 'donate' 300 yen, which isn't much but also isn't mentioned anywhere on the website, that didn't feel nice. Administration is awkwardly between existent and non-existent. The chapel is quite small, that causes a bit of an issue- for those who are there to admire the building and take photos, it is hard to completely enjoy it without feeling intruding and worrying that you are ruining someone's praying experience; for those who are there for religious reasons, I imagine it hard to not be distracted by tourists trying to take photos every second. At that point it is hard to say whether practically it serves as what it was designed for. I was there purely for architectural interests and my visit satisfied my curiosity, but that is all, no more and no less. Surrounding area is nice for a stroll if you are into residential housing designs.
