Kōdaiji Temple is a serene Buddhist temple in Japan, known for its beautiful gardens, tea houses, and seasonal light festivals. It's dedicated to the historic hero Toyotomi Hideyoshi and features a mausoleum with wooden statues of Toyotomi and his wife, Nene. The garden, designed by landscape architect Kobori Enshu, includes a strolling pond garden and a rock garden.
Difficult to capture with pictures, but this temple is stunning during fall. This is especially so during their night illumination event. I've been twice now and both times were breathtaking. The grounds are fairly large, so you really get to meander and enjoy the views, even if it is really crowded. Still, I think its still worth it for the experience. Within walking distance of other many other famous temples with night illuminations, so its possible to see multiple in one evening. For those of you who collect goshuin, they offer a few different ones at different areas, including one with a glow in the dark portion.

It was beautiful and holy place, definitely a recommended place. Some points are really like paint. Temple, garden, bambu forest, housings, very good complex to see it. If you go there it should be on your bucket list.

Visiting Kodaiji Temple during the evening hours is a truly magical experience. The temple tours are usually open until 10pm, but it's always a good idea to double-check the hours before your visit. The light show accompanied by music is an absolute must-see during the tour. Don't miss the enchanting bamboo forest trail, which becomes even more mesmerizing at night. I highly recommend this unique and unforgettable experience!

Great. You can buy entry fee of 600yen or 900yen at the entrance without reservation. Not very wide. Suitable especially if you don’t have a lot of time. Maple leaves, the view of Kyoto city, and bamboo forest is great.

I visited the temple many years ago. Had a very good impression about its garden. However I lost the feeling this time. Not sure it’s caused by years difference or simply too many tourists this time. Could even got a piece of quiet time when we were there.

A hidden gem in the heart of Kyoto provides a quiet and serene temple. Plus, not many tourists visit this temple. Entrance fee is 600¥. This temple is very large surrounded by beautiful gardens, pond, and bamboo forests. Well worth a visit especially during Fall!

Visited on 26/10/23. Beautiful serene temple. We visited as other tourists had recommended the bamboo forest in the temple garden and indeed it was really lovely and peaceful. There were only a few visitors so we were able to enjoy the bamboo grove and temple mostly alone. Also encountered a chubby calico cat near the bamboo grove. She was in hurry to go somewhere and didn’t want to stop to say hello. 😂

Wonderful temple to take a walk around at night time. We went during the fall when the leaves were turning red, a time called 紅葉, kōyō. The layout of the temple is very spacious and the scenery is gorgeous. Access is easy by bus from Kyoto station. Although it can get quite busy as with many parts of kyoto. However definitely recommend you check this place out at night if you can. It was a special experience for sure.
Eugene Y Sasaki — Google review
great place! we went there pretty late so no tourists were around and we had an amazing time walking through the 'park' and visiting the small tempels. They prepared a little tour around the area, leading through a little bamboo forrest where u can take good pictures at. It's right at the side to the traditional district which also spreads a calming atmosphere. A good place to go to for a relaxing walk and sightseeing.

A temple built by a noble woman in memory of her late noble husband. Lots of other temples in this area of Kyoto. Highly recommended if you visit Kyoto. The place is not flat. Be prepared to climb and descend steps. Worth it!

The way the temple was prepared is a cultural heritage site. Beautiful to visit during autumn season. Suggest to buy tickets in advance as the line can get long at night even during weekdays. Only suggestion is to please remove the advertisements of American Express because it’s so tacky (too American) and out of place in the temple.
Cosmic Guide — Google review
Came here on a Sunday evening for their light show - I believe this is a seasonal show. It was 600¥ per entry (adult ticket). Stunning night time views of the temple. I would recommend this to anyone in Kyoto looking for a peaceful night time activity.

We went to the exhibition which costs 600 yen, including an entrance to the museum. It was another way to see the temple at night. I would recommend coming over 5 pm and seeing the difference during sunset and night.

Kōdaiji Temple is a serene oasis in Kyoto's Higashiyama area. Its stunning gardens and intricate architecture offer a peaceful escape from the city buzz. The temple's beauty, especially during cherry blossom or autumn, is truly captivating. Exploring its halls and gardens gives a wonderful glimpse into Kyoto's rich history and spirituality

Hey, these shrines are all becoming a bit same same. No doubt there’s an interesting history and it’s a serene sanctuary.. but if you aren’t Shinto, or Japanese.. it’s some traditional architecture. The enclosed forest would be the main reason to go, but the tourist isn’t allowed in there..

It was originally a temple that was worshiped as the ancestral mausoleum of the Minamoto family, but due to the Separation of Shinto and Buddhism ordinance enacted in the Meiji period, the Buddhist shrine was abolished and it became Tada Shrine. I walked from Tada Station and it took about 20 minutes. The road is fairly wide up to the middle, but it gradually becomes narrower, like a back alley, and there is a fair amount of traffic, so I don't get the impression it's an easy walk. At the main gate, you are greeted by a staircase with a slight angle, but the east gate has fewer steps, and the west gate has a slope instead of stairs. Slope boards are placed at places with steps on the premises, such as gates, to take care of the steps. (Translated by Google) This is a facility where you can learn about old folk houses and lifestyles in various regions of Nara Prefecture. It was my first time to enter the museum, but it was interesting to see not only valuable folklore materials, but also rare exhibits about the topography of Nara Prefecture. You can view old folk houses for free. Nowadays, it is a valuable park where you can take your dog for a walk. The old folk houses in the Yoshino area are unique and interesting. If you have permission to cosplay, play, or take photos, you can go beyond the dirt floor and on the second floor, which the general public cannot access. The parking lot is large, easy to park, and free. Acorns are falling everywhere. There is no food on site, so you will need to prepare it in advance. (Translated by Google) It's quite a learning experience. It was 150 yen with JAF discount, but it is worth more than that. The faces of people who knew things from the past were shining with nostalgia. Hey, it was cold in winter, so I needed warm clothes. (It was 150 yen using the JAF member discount.) There are historical exhibits of daily life and nostalgic exhibits from the Showa era, so I thought it was a facility where I could feel the beginnings of Nara in my own way. (Translated by Google) My father, who is in his 80s, was happy when he saw the exhibits and said, ``It's so nostalgic.'' The brazier placed at the entrance was also warm and I was able to warm myself up while reminiscing about the past. The entrance fee is cheap, so please bring your grandparents along. I really recommend it!
