Former Shizutani School

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Shizutani School is a renowned historical landmark in Japan that was established in 1670 as the first educational institution for commoners. This school features exquisite lacquered wood and ceramic tiles, as well as a unique round top stone wall. Visitors can explore the beautifully maintained buildings and grounds and witness the countryside architecture of 18th century Japan. The symbolically significant pistachio trees on site provide colorful foliage during autumn, making it an ideal time to visit from mid-November onward.
I think the best time to go here is the first week of November. The light-up event is until November 23rd.

If you dont mind walking for abt 45 min one way from the JR station, then its a nice place to see beautiful autumn leaves. Its built similar to old confucian styles type of architecture. I went there today for the famous autumn illumination, unfortunately, all the leaves have dropped from the 2 big maple trees. No illumination but still there were other maple and koyo trees around the vicinity which was beautiful. The most important is, there aint many ppl, at least foreigners which has crowded everywhere this year !!

National cultural property. If you get the chance I would definitely recommend to visit this old school (possible the first public school in the world). English booklets are available to guide you through the area.

10 Nov 2019, this is still too early for the full autumn color for maple leaves, but the 2 pistachio trees, symbolic of this place is already quite bright. The best time will be around 17 to End Nov.

(Translated by Google) As I was riding my bicycle along the road around the island, I saw an old woman selling oranges. I was asked if I would like to try one, so I decided to have it. Very sweet and delicious. If that happens, I can't help but buy it because of the atmosphere. I decided to buy a bag full of small mandarin oranges. This is quite reasonable at 300 yen. When I counted it later, there were 30 pieces in it. Bizen Pottery Museum

Mentioned on
Local history museum
Museums
The Bizen Pottery Museum in Ako is a museum dedicated to local pottery from different eras. Highlights include pieces dating back to the Nara Period and contemporary pieces by national treasures. It is a worthwhile visit both for visitors to see the various styles of pottery and for those looking for souvenirs.
This is NOT a review of Pottery Museum which is completely torn down and being rebuilt (as of january 2024). The exhibition gallery at the train station building - 3 minute walk - shows a wide range of significant Bizen potters. I saw many beautiful examples, current and past. A small bit of historical info. I found it easy to purchase a few pieces within my budget.

Closed!! It is very much completely closed. Do not go here and waste your time.

Bizenware is very different to many other types of pottery so this museum is worth a visit. While there is very limited English language, there are many information boards covering the history and production of Bizen pottery that can be translated.

So, the Ibe Station area and its surroundings are very crowded! I was a little sad that there weren't many food stalls, probably due to the coronavirus, but it was quite fun. (Translated by Google) You can admire Bizen ware, contemporary art, and Art Olympia works, and enjoy matcha tea in a Bizen ware bowl in a room with a great view. Before I went, I thought it was a little expensive, but since you can take your time to look at it, I think art lovers will be satisfied. I was able to see both ancient Bizen and contemporary art, so I felt like I could experience the best of both. We recommend checking the website for the opening status.

(Translated by Google) It was the first time I had seen the Fujiwara Kei Memorial Museum since it first opened, and it had completely changed. (Translated by Google) The museum requires reservations, but you can walk around the museum listening to explanations from the curators, so even if you don't have any knowledge of the Living National Treasures or contemporary art on display, you can meet the curators on the spot. I could hear it. The exhibits included metal carvings, paintings, dolls, contemporary art, and ceramics by Kei Fujiwara and Rosanjin, all of which were covered in wide-ranging explanations, and I had a lot of fun wandering through the exhibits, which lasted more than two hours. Then you can enjoy matcha. The price is a bit high at 3,500 yen, but if you make a reservation for just one person, you will be accompanied by a curator to guide you, so after touring the museum, I didn't think it was expensive.

(Translated by Google) Is the conger eel cheaper now that Obon is over? I went to buy one for frying my favorite conger pike (large and thick) and one for parboiling (smaller than the bone remains in my mouth). It seems that the number of fish species has increased. Filefish is also small, but there was. Around the outside, you can find fried tempura, bread, sandwiches, sushi, fruit, and cutlery on the spot! There is also a table where you can eat. (Translated by Google) Open on Sunday mornings. Every January, you can buy oysters very cheaply. You can buy fresh and cheap fish caught in the Seto Inland Sea all year round. Blue crab, octopus, conger eel, pike conger, shrimp, mantis shrimp, and many more. Conger eels and eels are also sold as kabayaki at the fishermen's cooperative association. Also, takoyaki at a street stall is cheap and recommended. Photos are from the event. The Takoyaki shop is gone, it's a shame.
