Kona Coffee Living History Farm

Mentioned on
History museum
Museums
The Kona Coffee Living History Farm is a unique museum that offers visitors the chance to explore a 1920s coffee farm in South Kona. Operated by the Kona Historical Society, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute, this tour provides more than just a glimpse into the process of growing and harvesting coffee. Costumed guides demonstrate work tasks while also offering insights into rural Japanese immigrant life throughout several decades of the 20th century. The 5.
The lovely lady in the house (sorry, didn't get your name) had such passion as she explained life for the family on the farm. Jim has a lot of knowledge about the farm equipment and kindly let us enter the washing platform. Roosters everywhere! :) There is a $20 for adults to enter.

$20 coffee farm tour that has no coffee tastings. Go to another farm that provides tastings, which would pretty much be any other farm in the area, and it’d cost less/be free too. I went to Heavenly Hawaiian the day before and it was so much better. Come here only if you like history and don’t want to try any coffee

My wife and I visited the Kona Coffee Living History Farm earlier this week and had a wonderful time! We learned a lot about the lives of the Japanese immigrants who came to Kona in the early 20th century and their coffee farms. Pauline provided us with a wealth of knowledge about family life on the farm, and Barry taught us a lot about how coffee is grown, harvested, and processed. The farm itself is fascinating, with it's historic buildings and artifacts, and the complexity of raising food and other cash crops alongside the coffee trees was eye-opening. We spent a couple of hours at the farm, and will definitely return next time we visit Kona.

Learned so much during this tour. I love how they tell a story along with it and free samples never hurt !

Really interesting tour of what it was like for the original Kona coffee farmers. The lady guiding the family’s home was phenomenal and taught us so so much. Great context for anyone visiting the active farms in Kona.
Michael Mancinelli — Google review
Interesting history behind the family and coffee and the ingenuity of people to extract the beans and dry them, as well as info on maintaining the trees. Got to try the equipment and taste a freshly extracted coffee bean which was a surprising taste. You'll have to go and try it yourself!

As museums go, this is a rather laid back affair, with limited hours. Essentially there are two subject matter experts--a homemaker and a farmer, describing the life of an ethnically Japanese tenant coffee farmer. The Greenwell farm coffee tour (free) up the hill gives the other side of the history. The absolute highlight is that a daughter of a (different, contemporary) Japanese tenant coffee farmer gives the household tour. It is personal, accurate, detailed, and totally fascinating. This all takes place in a preserved/restored small house where a family actually lived, including sequel generations up to the 1990's. Frankly, someone should professionally video the tour before it disappears as it is hard to imagine a subsequent guide being able to bring the same personal quality to the lifestyle description. Imagine you hear a description of going to school, and then can ask where the school was, what the teachers were like, or whatever other details you are curious about, or look at the pot of rice she has cooked that morning over the fire and ask how she knows when it is done.... Having lived in a similar climate zone also with Japanese influence, the authenticity was palpable.

This is more of an encounter, than a "museum"... And I mean that in a good way. It's easy to find and to park (which is free). You can clearly see the people working here love this farm and are dedicated to teaching visitors about the history of this coffee farm and the amazing immigrants from Japan who established it. It was interesting to me to learn about the difference in the method of harvesting and processing coffee beans that is used in Hawaii as opposed to in South America. This is a great place for visitors of all ages... Young children will find it engaging. It's also a beautiful location and they offer free samples of their Kona coffee, which is delicious, and expensive, but you might not be able to resist the temptation of indulging in a purchase.

Note - and educational and learning tour. If you are looking for taste/sample tour this likely not the one for you. If you want to learn about history and background of "real" Kona coffee this is the place. Pauline and Joe who were the interpreters did a great job and have real knowledge and experience they enjoy sharing. Mahalo

Lots of interesting information and things to see. We learned a lot about growing, harvesting and processing coffee as well as about the experience of coffee farmers in the mid 20th century. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly.

Definitely worth the stop even if it’s a little expensive. Can’t put a price on knowledge and experience though (well I guess the entry fee does but…I digress). Learned a TON about traditional coffee making and growing, Japanese and Hawaiian culture, and even mail order brides. Even learned that the Japanese invented catfishing. Ask the tour guide about “picture brides” and you’ll see what I mean.

I got here not knowing it was $20 Admission. So I did not experience the museum. But the really nice lady at the gate gave a brochure and let me crack a few macadamia nuts. They're tasty!

We loved our visit and tour here. We learned a lot about the growing and processing of coffee beans. We also learned about the lives of an early Japanese family on the island, their experience from 1913, through WWII and beyond.

Loved our tour here at the history farm. Just the loveliest guides, Jim and Pauline (sorry I didn’t get the name of the hostess at the front), plentiful with stories and knowledge about coffee and history on the island. A very self sufficient farm with a glimpse of the past of how Japanese people used to live on the island. Even got to pick our own orange off the tree and crack open fresh macadamia nuts to eat. Would most definitely come back here! Thanks very much
Steph C. — Google review
I can’t say enough about how much my kids (13 & 15) enjoyed this museum. The speakers were very knowledgeable & interesting. They brought the farm to life. The docent who helped us crack macadamia nuts was helpful & answered all questions we had. One of our favorite things in Kona!

I absolutely loved touring the farm. There is a $15 fee but it is completely worth it. Listening to the stories of the farmer and learning from the lady of the house is the best part of the tour. The lady of the house taught us how to make a traditional Japanese meal and write in Japanese calligraphy. This tour is an amazing cultural experience and a great way to learn about the farm and how coffee is made.

Visited in April 2024. This farm is so much fun!! Jim and Pauline are incredible storytellers and simply delightful. While the tour is advertised as self-guided, there were two hosts in specific areas when we went. First we made our way to the coffee processing part of the farm, where we found Jim. Jim assigned us roles on the coffee farm as it would have been run in the late 1800s-1920s. He walked us through what our daily chores would have been, and how certain technological advances would have impacted our lives as coffee farmers, and was simply hilarious! Next we made our way to the house, which is a restored family home that has been staged as it would have been in the 1920s. Pauline explained how the food would be prepared, with a real-time demonstration, and explained the Japanese heritage that influenced their lives. She described how the house was constructed and maintained, as well as the challenges of maintaining the structure. As a lifelong member of the community, she was able to tell us personal stories of life on a coffee farm through the years. She’s a treasure! This was truly a highlight of our trip and I would strongly recommend this to all!

Worth visiting this farm if you are a coffee lover and history buff. There were people in the farm who walked us thru the ancient times (may be 100 yrs ago) and told us the history of the family who owned this farm and how they used to do chores on this farm. There are many coffee and macadamia trees. We cracked some fresh macadamia nuts and they were so yummy. We were offered some oranges that grow on that property and they were so juicy and sweet. We really had a good time visiting this farm and learning the history of the farm.

It’s a great place for snorkeling, however I have a help request, since I am a rookie, I lost my snorkeling mask nearby the water of captain cook monument. I’m worried that it will impact the ecosystem of the ocean lives, if anyone who is expert comes later on and noticed my lost equipment, could you help to take it back to the land so that no making pollutions to the ocean?Thank you so much for the potential help!

Great Bay, the very Rocky beach is not easily enjoyable since there is no sand but it's all big rocks. But the view is worth the drive i. Oh by the way the phone map takes you through a private one lane road, very narrow, so please don't follow the road of the main highway if you're going north on hwy 11 don't take the first exit to 160 but the second exit. The Bay water was really clear we could see fish from the dock/stone wall barrier. It is absolutely a beautiful place/Bay, I enjoyed the little time I spent in there.

It's exotic bay that you could watch Captain cook! It takes about 15-20 minutes from the two step beach. Very peaceful and calm place. If you need to take a break with the sound the wave crush to the stones, you may need to consider this spot to visit.

The best snorkeling place at big island. It’s only reachable through foot (a nice hike to see the lava and the bay view), boat or kayaking. We hiked down and it’s totally worth it. One can even see the fishes from the shore. Things to take: water to drink, snorkeling set. Recommend to take: water shoes, hammock, reef safe sun protection.
Junnan Liu — Google review
This is a must if you snorkel! The drive in from the main road is worth it even if you aren’t going in the water. You’re descending 1500 feet, winding down the terrain admiring amazing houses with incredible views. As you get close, you’ll pass a small roadside fruit stand. Turn right and this is where you should try to park. There are about 6-8 parking spots at the beach itself. Parking is very difficult. Park on the road side and plan to walk the 5 minutes down to Manini Beach. Use Manini beach in your GPS. There is not beach to lay on but there is a grass park overlooking the bay. That is where you lay towels etc.

Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary is an awe-inspiring location on Big Island that should be added to your itinerary. The Galaxy Garden is a must-see with its diverse selection of vibrant hibiscus and tropical flora, providing visitors with a sense of enchantment. Additionally, Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary houses Harry the parrot, who is known for his kind demeanor and adds to the sanctuary's charm.
Beautiful, peaceful, and absolutely worth the stop!!! They have workshops and outbuildings for events. If you need a quiet place to meditate, read a book, or just a stroll through the gardens, this is the place!! There are so many varieties of plants and fruits to admire, even kids will love it (as long as they are respectful). Has a cute little gift shop and clean bathrooms. Barbara was super knowledgeable and friendly!!

Amazing place, definitely deserves a visit or two while on Big Island. Plan on losing track of time exploring the Galaxy Garden with all the abundance of hibiscus and other tropical flowers and plants!

My husband and I decided to take it easy after several days of hikes on the Big Island. After a leisurely breakfast in Captain Cook I looked at Google Maps for something relaxing in the area. I found Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary, and it seemed like it would fit the bill. The driving directions were clear and easy to follow, and the drive from the main road to the garden has a stunning view of the ocean. Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary has nice, easily accessible parking that is clearly marked. There is no parking fee, only a $10 admission charge to the garden. Once inside Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary you will be treated to an amazing, peaceful, tropical botanical garden with amazing plants, the smells of tropical flowers in the air, and the sound of birds all around. Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary has some very basic rules, basically just be quiet and respectful, don't ruin the peace for anyone else. Children are welcome, but are to be supervised as it's "not a playground." There are a variety of religions represented in this space, but as that wasn't my purpose I really can't comment on the representation. I highly recommend visiting Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary as one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I have seen in my many visits to the Big Island.

This was such an absolutely beautiful place to visit if your in Hawaii. From Kona, it was about a 30-ish minute drive & well worth the drive! It says this is a handicap friendly place, but be cautious. Ìt was very difficult to push our fathers wheelchair because the peace gardens go downhill & getting back up was very difficult. A walker would probably do much better. Also, you should stop at the 'Banana Bread' stand & get the BEST Banana Bread ever! Seriously the best I've ever had! ❤️

This is such a beautiful and creatively designed place. It requires paid admission and is very worth it. Throughout the complex, there are so many varieties of plant life with placards that identify the species and their origination, while many of them being intertwined within a unique display or format. It's really fun learning about all the different tropical plants this way. There's also interesting displays that portray most, if not all, of the religions from around the globe.

A luscious and relaxing garden with something for adults and children. Easy to access for people with reduced mobility, mostly wheelchair friendly. The garden has several vistas and “rooms” with different focus there’s a mandala room för contemplating. A galaxy garden modeled after Milky Way. Several Buddhist stupas and rock labyrinths invites to meditation. We easily spend a few hours here smelling the flowers and enjoying the shade.

This is my favorite place on the whole island. It’s super peaceful and incredibly beautiful. It is a great place to just sit and breathe. The garden hosts representation of many statues and icons from various faith beliefs. It’s very educational and the galaxy garden is quite remarkable. Little kids love playing hide and seek in it. I especially love the newest addition, the butterfly garden. The views throughout the garden are fabulous and they also have their own lava tube which you can view.

Beautiful gardens. Would have spent a lot more time there, but I forgot bug spray and the mosquitos decided I was a prime snack for the afternoon. The gift shop is a bit dated but I did find some yummy cookies to nosh on, on the drive home. Would be a peaceful place to sit and have lunch, do some art, it6 just "be". If you want to spend a lot of time here, I'm not sure I would recommend kids-unless they are really into plants and nature.... Like I said, I could have spent much longer here, but my kids wouldn't have lasted more than an hour or so at the most.

The laminated descriptor page was fraught with errors and misspellings, lacking numerical info. Not the easiest to follow. Pics were too small to match up with what one was standing in front of. For $10/head, one would think this would be a top notch presentation. Lady taking payment wasn't flowing with "Aloha", nor info, nor friendliness. She seemed to be just doing her job. Perhaps The good is that this was still more informational than asking a person, who could easily tire of someone constantly asking, "What's that, what's this...". Also, the wide variety of flora in one place is great. Except for the Tibetan Sand Mandala, I couldn't care less about the different religions on display here. But the sand mandala is something I've not seen before, therefore, it's neat and impressive. I liked the fact that the book, Planets in Composite by Robert Hand is on their bookshelf. I liked the Galaxy layout of plants and flowers with a black hole at the center. Cool to see flocks of saffron finches in the garden. Also Harry the parrot said HI back to me when I took his pic. The ancient, very vocal cat was friendly.

St Benedict Catholic Church

St Benedict Catholic Church, also known as The Painted Church, is a Gothic-style cathedral located in Hawaii. It was built in the late 1800s by John Velghe, a self-taught artist and Catholic priest from Belgium. This church is famous for its biblical murals that adorn the walls and ceiling of the vaulted nave which has been modeled on a Gothic cathedral in Burgos, Spain.
This was a unique church and the story behind the paintings beautiful. Walls hand painted to assist in teaching the gospel with a language barrier. Still operational today.

An incredibly beautiful Catholic church that sits on a hill. If you're a visitor, like myself, they give you a handmade yarn lei upon entry before the church service for you to keep. The view when you step outside of the church is breathtaking. The inside is painted beautifully. One mass on Saturday evening and one mass on Sunday morning. Everyone was so nice. So happy to be able to visit this church.

A beautiful and historic church. The priest at the time of the construction of the current building was a Belgian missionary, Fr. John Velghe. Fr. Velghe was also a self-taught artist who painted beautiful frescoes on the church’s interior. Scenes on the inside of the church include Cain’s murder of Abel, The Writing on the Wall from the Book of Daniel, the Temptation of Christ and the damned in Hell.

What a lovely place. It is what you want in a place of refuge. Beauty and serenity. The grounds are also not to be missed. The building is getting a bit worn which is sad but also adds to the experience.

I can't tell that this is the best place for the tourists since this church is still active church and not intended to build for serving a tour purpose. In other words, if you visit this church because of just your small curiosity, you may be disappointed by this church. However, if you love the history of the Hawaii including the Christian history in this island, you will not miss this church on your bucket list. The church is small, and you also need to take a small path to arrive this church. The interior of the church tells you how the church father dedicated to serve and teach the Hawaiian with the Bible. The spots on the church location will inspire you many things, such as a thinking why the missionary came here or a thinking how they served the natives in this island. If you want to be inspired by the historical site of this island, I highly recommend you to visit this church.

Captain James Cook Monument

Mentioned on
Monument
Sights & Landmarks
Monuments & Statues
The Captain James Cook Monument is a landmark located in Kaawaloa that commemorates the spot where the renowned British explorer was killed in 1779. Accessible by either boat ride or hike, it is currently illegal to moor vessels along the shoreline or at the adjacent wharf without proper permits. Visitors who wish to kayak are advised to rent from permitted companies such as Aloha Kayak, Big Island Kayak, and Kona Boys.
If you do the hike make sure you are wearing good shoes and have lots of water. We saw a few people who weren't prepared and were struggling. The trail is narrow and you will walk through brush for part of the first leg. Once you get close to the edge you will be rewarded with some good views. There are 8 markers along the way, each marker is about 0.25 mile. Once you hit #8 follow the trail to the left to get to the monument. There is plenty of shaded spots to put your stuff down. If you plan to snorkel, go to the edge of the cement pad in front of the monument, put on your gear and push off. Use the front, as there is coral along the sides that may have urchins. There is a small rope ladder that will help to get back up. The snorkeling was well worth it, water was clear and there was a lot of spots to explore. It can be busy depending on how many tour boats are around. Be prepared, the walk back up is a lot tougher than the way down.
Darren Hall — Google review
Disclaimer: Just rating the site and not the trail down. Monument to Captain Cook is cool to see; you can easily find the large obelisk when you continue down the path to your left and then there is a smaller engraved stone in the water, if you were to head straight to the rocky shore from the trail. Snorkeling is absolutely incredible! You can see so many fish, coral, and urchin species! The water was so clear, making the experience really enjoyable. You have to walk across lava rocks to get into the water, and climb out of the water over these rocks, so just be prepared since it isn't just a beach snorkel. I recommend getting there before mid-morning to try to beat the snorkeling crowds that arrive by boat. By 11 in the morning, there were at least a hundred + people snorkeling in the bay with 4-5 boats. It felt a little chaotic in the water at times. They cleared out around noon, though, so you have a midday gap when it would also be a good time to snorkel. The snorkeling here is definitely worth the nearly 4 mile round trip hike!
Jenny McKee — Google review
I had the opportunity to snorkel in several places in Hawaii, and I must say, this particular spot stood out as the best. Accessible through two routes, the first being a challenging hike and the second through guided tours, my recommendation is to opt for the unforgettable kayak journey to Captain Cook. Not only does this offer a unique experience of kayaking in the ocean, but it also leads to the ultimate snorkeling location. What made this adventure exceptional was the flexibility it provided. If you're fortunate, you might even witness a captivating dolphin show, as we did on both the kayak trip there and back. The beauty of this option is that there are fewer kayakers, allowing you to relish the serene ocean kayaking experience. While guided tours have their perks, such as providing snorkeling accessories and a set time limit, embarking on the hike independently requires you to bring your own necessary gear. However, the freedom and sense of accomplishment make it entirely worth it. This hidden gem will undoubtedly be a must-visit for me on my next trip. The combination of the challenging journey, breathtaking snorkeling, and the possibility of encountering dolphins makes it an unparalleled adventure in Hawaii.
Bharath Hunkunda Sreenivasa — Google review
Excellent snorkeling: lots of fish, huge variety of beautiful fish, some nice coral, but it's more about the fish. Easy snorkeling. If you come by boat access is easier (car then walk involves step climb), but you can't go ashore. There were other small boats there with us, but it wasn't crowded at all. Very historic site: the captain was a great but flawed man.... And he had a pretty bad day here.
Stephen Claxton — Google review
HIKING BEWARE!!! This is a beautiful place to go snorkeling. The fish, coral, and water is GREAT. But please beware this is best for an experienced hiker. 3.8 difficult miles to the water and over 700 feet of steep elevation change. The best advice is wear hiking shoes and bring lots of water. Give yourself plenty of time to return. You don't want to get stuck returning in the dark.
Abdul M Bailey — Google review
Fabulous snorkeling!! The yellow tangs were brilliant in front of the Captain Cook Monument! The water was a bit shallow in places but it was possible to keep snorkeling. There were moray eels too! And we saw spinner dolphins on our kayak trip across the bay. We highly recommend renting kayaks and paddling to the monument for snorkeling!
Jo Ann Heinrich — Google review
Amazing snorkeling experience! This is one of several bays on the big island of Hawaii to snorkel and see coral reefs along with the multitude of beautiful fish and aquatic species. We saw rainbow fish, eels, and the dolphins put on an amazing show for us. Wild dolphins, no one trained them, and I am pretty sure they did it to poke fun at us humans. Highly recommend you take the snorkeling adventure of a lifetime.

Awesome hike and amazing snorkelling just remember to wear your proper shoes! We saw goats, pigs and chickens on this hike, took about an hour to go down and 45 minutes to get back up. The snorkelling was amazing, huge schools of yellow Tang and other fish which would swim right up to you sooner even nibbled my toes! I would have given 5 stars if there was a ladder or better way to get in the water, we got rashed up pretty bad by the lava rocks.

Monument was cool, but you come here for the amazing snorkelling! There were so many fish, loads of different species, beautiful sea landscape. Definitely worth that extremely hardcore hike. Loads of water, snacks/food and hat/glasses

The trip across the bay is beautiful and the clarity of the water in front of the monument is amazing, you almost don't need snorkel gear. We had a great day kayaking across, though tourist were crawling all over the monument when we arrived.

Great spot for snorkeling open to public via a hike or to boat tour companies. Great colorful coral reefs with many fishes around! Must recommend this spot for snorkeling.
Akshay Panwar — Google review
One of the best snorkeling destinations in the world! The reef is healthy and the fish are abundant! Getting to this secluded spot is the real adventure. You have three options, pay for a tour boat, kayak across the harbor or take a grueling 4-mile (round trip) hike to the monument. We decided to take the hike and we were not disappointed. It was worth it, but the hike is very hard. It is probably a 1,500 foot elevation climb from the cliffs to the shore. Going down is an easy 45-minute hike. But going back up is almost straight up. It took us almost 2 hours to get back up and we were dripping sweat and very exhausted. Much of the path is rocky and ankle-breaking rubble. Especially between trail markers 5-7. And there are NO restrooms. So plan on bringing lots of water, hiking shoes and toilet paper (just in case). The monument is beautiful and the ancient Hawaiin village is so cool to see. We snorkeled for many hours and still didn't see it all. From 6-foot eels, the size of my leg, to thousands of fish, this had it all. The coral looks happy and healthy. Getting in and out of the water is a little tricky, but doable. Just be careful of the spikes of the 1-foot-long urchin spikes. You wouldn't want one of those stuck in your foot. LOL! The bottom line: the hike was hard, but doable. Just take your time and enjoy the views along the way. We are two 45-year-olds that exercise daily. Yes, we are overweight a bit, but we hike a lot. And we made it, but my wife and I were pretty exhausted by the end. Parking: just park off the road. Trail is not marked, but there is a sign you will see.

Wonderful place to snorkel! Hike is challenging 3.8 Miles with 1,200ft gain. Bring plenty of water. It gets the most crowded between 10-3pm. Come earlier or later to see the most fish and have the place to yourself.

Beautiful hike, but that return trip is something else! Waters were crystal clear in the bay and you can see so much!
Peter Henrichs — Google review
This is one of the must see spots if you ever come down to big island! I highly recommend to do the hike instead of doing the boat tours. It makes the experience lot more rewarding! It’s about an hour hike which can definitely be painful if your not in decent shape but well worth enjoying the view walking down to the beach and definitely make sure to bring your snorkeling gear and water shoes. It’s just this massive magical pool with thousands of fish just roaming around you living their best lives. It’s definitely a must see spot. I also highly recommend reading up on the story of captain cook and how he was massacred and hence the monument.

Awesome place to visit. Please read up on the history - both sides of the story! Fun fact, we visited British soil without a passport...do your homework to find out what I'm talking about 🙂 Also, it's incredibly rude to block the whole steps by sunbathing at the top. Be kind, people!
Rebecca Retzlaff — Google review
This has been one of our fave days out! It's a 2 mile hike downhill and the same back up again. I struggled with the uphill and my husband had to carry my bag :-) BUT it is amazing at the bottom. Excellent snorkeling spot, so many different fish. Take snorkeling gear and 2 bottles of water each. Also wear beach shoes or similar in the water as the coral and rocks are sharp. Enjoy!!
Leanne Favier — Google review
Relatively straightforward trail (roughly 2 miles each way, took about an hour each way ). There are goats along the trail who are pretty timid, so try not to scare them. Once you get to the beach, the water is pretty shallow but there is an abundance of sea life — just keep an eye out for sea urchins and pufferfish! Be very careful on the slippery lava rocks, I fell and scraped my knee pretty bad and that was not fun on the hike back (which is a gradual ascent). Bring proper shoes for this hike, I contemplated just wearing my usual sandals but was so glad I wore my trail runners. There’s quite a lot of loose rocks so be careful

American restaurant
Located in Waimea on the Big Island, Merriman's Big Island is a casual and elegant American restaurant that serves up regional dishes from around the US. The menu features delicious fusion techniques and locally sourced ingredients, making it a must-eat destination for visitors to Hawaii.
5 plus plus plus stars!!! MAKE A RESERVATION and make sure you keep it! EXCELLENT food, outstanding wine list and what a great Prix Fixe Menu with so many wonderful and tasty choices! Annette took great care of us and we got to sit right next to the kitchen and watch the flames - AMAZING!!!! Great setting and fresh food that feels like it’s prepared with the same care that your mom would take to feed you! It’s high on the list for wonderful!!!

This was one of the top finds. We were not able to make reservations ahead of time but happened to come across it on our drive. Ben was wonderful and was able to get us a seating within an hour of walking in. Jim was wonderful! He had the best recommendations and they did not disappoint. From the service to the ambiance — highly recommended. As for the food. Words do not do it justice. We had the prix fixe holiday menu and had the option of getting multiple dishes with the size of our party and each item had an amazing flavor. From the starters to the dessert. It was truly a pleasure to have experienced it.

Excellent experience. Meal was outstanding, as expected after reading reviews. Their take on the Mai Thai was delicious. Make sure you have a reservation or otherwise you are apt to not get seated as it’s an intimate ~20 table seating environment and it does fill up. Look forward to the next opportunity to visit.

This place was fantastic. Very obviously true to their word, it looked and tasted 100% farm-to-table fresh and high-quality fare. The service was incredible, our server was Peter I believe, who took the time to thoroughly walk through the items on the menu. The drinks were amazing as well. I’m sure we’ll be back next time we’re on the island.

The BEST food experience in Big island hands down!!! The food and cocktails are mind blowing and so is the overall experience. So thankful we drove 30 mins to this place for dinner. Every item we ordered was flavorful and delicious. Posting pictures of the Beets Salad, Veg Enchilada and the best ever Mai Tai

I had such a wonderful meal here for my Cousin's birthday! Everything was amazing. The host is very gracious and welcoming to everyone that steps the the door to set the tone. Drinks were phenomenal. I had a Merriman's Mai Tai. It was similar to the classic Trader Vic's recipe. And it was so good. It was topped with Lilikoi foam, which added so much flavor! The food itself was top notch. I knew it would be good. But it was even better than I imagined. The quality of my NY steak was superb. The cut, the rub, and it was perfectly cooked. I can't wait to go back!

Fantastic anniversary thx to kind lady (sry dunno her name). She served so kindly and made us happy with her recommendation. We enjoyed fully on our dinner and left happily. Hope to revisit if we can reserve seats on good time.

Had a late lunch, which was an early dinner for us, since we are still set to PDT. The food is excellent, plus Ashley provided great service and information on what was available on their menu. Food items are sourced locally and artfully prepared to arrive at the right moment. Would definitely return.

The food was amazing but the service was even better! We had a hard time finding a ride back to our hotel and they were willing to accommodate!! The food was so fresh and flavorful, I would highly recommend going off the beaten path for this wonderful local spot.

This is an experience not to miss. Extremely professional service and incredible food. The lamb was incredible. I recommend getting multiple course. They’re paced well. The poke was a favorite, we like it spicy. The craft cocktails are also great.
William Potthoff — Google review
They have added a lunch service with limited menu. We got the special which was a lamb pot pie and it was excellent, delicious and filling. The restaurant is very clean with top notch service. The food came out quickly after ordering. We also got the bread pudding for dessert and coffee, their house blend is wonderful. My one critique is that it is mostly one big room and therefore very loud. They have done what they can to combat the noise with sound dampening batting but it is still quite a loud atmosphere, dinner there tends to be a quieter ambiance and more mature crowd.

We randomly came here a day before Christmas at 5:20pm and were lucky to get a table without a reservation. All the other people seemed to have reservations. They had only fixed price 3-course menus at a quite steep price (smth like a $100 per person), but we were not disappointed! One could choose between several options for a starter and a main course. Everything that we had was very tasty. The server was very nice and the setting quite good. Mai tais were great as well.
Karina Kisselite — Google review
Wonderful food and service. Been here before and it didn't disappoint. The menu was changed to a Three Course Price Fixe Menu for $95/pp but the food was delicious with generous portions. Will definitely go back when we're on Kona again. Went to the Merriman's on Maui which was not worth it. This is by far the better restaurant.
Martin Choy — Google review
Truly an amazing restaurant. Everything tasted delicious, every ingredient on the plate is super tasty and complements the others perfectly. Their mai tai is the best I ever had. I will definitely come back.

Wonderful experience...our waiter Ryan was attentive and had great suggestions for us first timers. We had brunch which was absolutely delicious. The margarita was amazing and tasted so good. Make sure you make a reservation or you will be waiting for some time to get in.

Truly a wonderful experience from start to finish. Elle, our server was perfect. Dinner started with a Prosecco toast. Then smoked taro chips with hummus. My wife order Hirabara salad, Kailua pig quesadilla and kua’aina beef tenderloin. I got the shrimp bulgogi, poke, macadamia nut crusted fish and day boat catch. Daiquiri, ginger ale. Finished with bread pudding and chocolate purse. The service was amazing, attentive but not intrusive. Elle was there when you needed her to be and left us along when we didn’t. Even the bus staff was amazing. Merrimen may not be able to boost about their views but with their food and service, who needs a view. Looking forward to next time.

It's quite a drive out to middle of nowhere but I would say it's worth the drive. I had the wok charred Mahi and it was honestly the best food I had on the Big Island. The waitress explained everything on the menu and the Mai thai here was the best on the Island as well. Great place to dine for a special occasion.

After reading all of the reviews, we knew we had to check it out. Merriman's has a super chill vibe, with fine-dining food so its a great blend. My wife also added on the wine pairings of which they all were great. The absolute star of the experience was the Lilikoi Margarita. Seriously delicious. Food was superb and the desserts were out of this world. Chante was the best and provided excellent service while also letting us enjoy the food. Worth the price!

An incredible evening! The food was all so fresh and the service was lovely. Annette was charming, knowledgeable and made the evening so memorable. Beautiful mushroom pot pie with fresh puff pastry cooked when we ordered it. The lobster ravioli was sumptuous, with sweet farm tomatoes. The scallops were butter soft and sweet and the cornbread was to die for. An exceptional experience!

We needed a reservation but it was worth it ! Food was fresh and well cooked. Small portions but enough. Good cocktails and beer, and excellent deserts. We tried the burgers, pork sandwich, mahi mahi catch of the day , all with Yukon baby potatoes baked with Hawaiian salt. Everything was good and everyone was happy! Our server was helpful and quick. We will come back next time we visit the island .

10/10. The food was AMAZING. The service was EXCEPTIONAL. And overall, a perfect experience. 4 of us. Ordered the "escargot" octopus. The hillbilly cornbread. The mushroom pot pie. 3 orders of the chateaubriand. 1 bone in new york. 3 chocolate purse deserts and 1 bread pudding. All were fantastic. We do regret not ordering their Mai Tai... we saw it as we were leaving and looked killer! The service was top notch. They work as a team and everything flowed flawlessly. The atmosphere was louder than we expected, but still very nice!
Patricia Nielsen — Google review
One of the best meal experiences! We were a party of 10 adults. From the introductions of the wait staff to the finishing of desert, everything was first class. I enjoyed the Curried Hamakua Macadamia Nut Crusted Fish and it would be worth the plane ticket just to go back for that again. The drinks were gorgeous and tasty, everyone raved about their food, deserts were delicious. It was an all around amazing experience. The only reason I gave the atmosphere 4 stars instead of 5 was we were seated next to the kitchen and there was an odor (like sterno) that was fairly strong.
Cara Shaw — Google review
10/10 this is hands down one of the best restaurants on the island. If you want exquisitely prepared food and amazing service, this is the spot. Local specialties are prepared and served with care. The staff are amazing and knowledgeable. A perfect spot for a special occasion!

Poke bar
This Hawaiian seafood restaurant Da Poke Shack is known for its fresh and authentic poke bowls, which are perfect for those looking for a quick and easy meal. There's usually a long line at Da Poke Shack, but it's worth it because the bowls are really delicious. If you're looking for an amazing seafood restaurant in Kailua-Kona, Da Poke Shack should definitely be on your list.
We went here at noon and had to stand in a line (15 people ahead of us); but the food was really fresh and worth it. All of the poke is tuna with different flavors. We had Pele's Kiss, Spicy Garlic, Wet Hawaiian, and the Shack Special. They were all great. They also had great sides. We tried the Taka salad, spicy clams, and quinoa seaweed salad also. Unfortunately they had run out of seaweed salad. That is a risk....they do run out of stuff. Would definitely recommend going to this place if you are on Big Island. Best poke place.
Krish Menon — Google review
This is the best place to get poke. The poke here is fresh and delicious. There are many options so you’re bound to find something you like. How it works is that you choose the size of your plate. You then choose your mains and the your sides. I tried most of the different kinds of poke they have. They are all very good. I also tried the mini octopuses and scallops. They were incredibly fun to try and tasted very good. I recommend the crab as a side since it’s real crab and not imitation crab. There is a selection of bottled beverages that you can chose from. There are some picnic tables you can eat at outside, but you most likely will have to go eat somewhere else.
Ben M — Google review
This place is kind of hard to find— it’s like in some condos downtown in Kona by the shore. Super delicious though, good poke choices and fast service. Can’t go wrong with any of the options. Fresh and tasty!
Lillia Khelif — Google review
Delicious poke!!! We stopped here for lunch and we are so glad we did! I got the Wet Hawaiian and Pele’s Kiss both were amazing! You can definitely tell how fresh everything is. The service was quick but friendly, they are used to people not knowing what to order but did a great job helping us interpret the menu and pick things we would like. The tables outside were full but we walked a little ways down and ate looking out at the ocean which made the meal even better! We will definitely eat here again!
Annie Steinert — Google review
So yummy and amazing. Got the plate and my boyfriend and I shared and we ended up bringing rest of the meal back home becausewe got full. There was a little of a wait in line to get the food, but Definitely worth waiting for. Definitely recommend. Nothing like the inland we get. This is by far WAY better!!!!
Samantha Beschta — Google review
No joke, the best (it's called that for a reason) poke I've EVER had. Only fresh caught fish used, and if you walked in blindfolded, you'd never know you surrounded by pounds of raw fish, that's how clean and fresh it is. Outside dining only, we took our lunch and ate it on the beach
Jackie Frieden — Google review
This is definitely the best poke we've found on the big island! Logistically, it's kind of hard to get to. They are currently closed on Sundays and Mondays, but they don't update their hours anywhere except their front door. So our first attempt to come here was unsuccessful. They're only open until 4, but you need to get there well before 1 if you don't want some things to be sold out. There will probably be a line, but it's not too bad. We got a poke plate with Spicy Crab Salad, Potato Macaroni Salad, Spicy Garlic Sesame Poke, Wet Hawaiian Poke, Shack Special Poke, Pele's Kiss Poke. The Shack Special was definitely my favorite followed by Pele's Kiss. The sides we picked were ok, but the poke was definitely the star of the show. If you're looking for great poke on the big island, plan ahead and come check this spot out!
Jacqueline Telljohann — Google review
The best Poke you can get! Service is very friendly and the quality of the food is amazing. A bowl costs $18 & a plate $35. Nevertheless it's worth it. I've had a lot of seafood up and down the west coast and on the islands. This is one place I would be happy to come back to.

The very worn floor is really all you need to know! Very popular for years and years. This is some of the best poke on the island. Super fresh and simply seasoned depending on the flavors/styles you choose. Read the directions so you are ready to order (see one of my pictures) Locals make a point to stop here and you should too!

Opens at 10am, arrive early to avoid a line (like most places here). We got the 4 poke sampler plate with 2 sides. Poke was delicious and fresh. No frozen poke! Small amount of parking. Outdoor seating only (2 large picnic tables). Variety of drinks in cans and bottles.

First time trying real poke! Not a big fan of anything raw but decided since I'm in Hawaii, I need to try poke. This place was pretty straightforward with its options and had great ones. I went with a poke bowl with rice, shrimp, and dynamite (not really sure all it had) but nonetheless it had a great flavor.
Iris Navarrete — Google review
Apparently a very popular poke place. Cannot tell if the ingredients are especially good compared to the poke places in California. The taste is fine. The service is a bit rushy. Prices are reasonable.
Albert Wu — Google review
It’s amazingly good. The food tasted really fresh. Mostly order Togo as the space outdoor are always taken. Not in a really good parking or dinning friendly.

Best poke in Kona. This was our first stop for poke on the big island and it was the best we had. Fresh and delicious and the variety of options was great. You won’t make a mistake coming here….so worth it. Benches are outside with umbrellas. Parking is small but spaces open up quickly.

absolutely insane poke - a plate is PLENTY to share between 2 people. We got 4 different kinds of poke and ended up liking 3 out of the 4 - they were all super fresh and the mac & cheese salad was to die for. same with the seaweed - overall would HIGHLY recommend

Da Poke Shack serves deliciously fresh poke! The wait is worth every bite and the employees are fast and kind. Would definitely recommend if you’re in the area! The poke has multiple options and they also serve pork, both are great! I suggest going on the earlier side to avoid limited options due to some selling out! Very popular and only good things to share.
Mia Andahl — Google review
As someone with a high standard for seafood/Asian food I loved this! All their options were delicious and super tasty. Although it wasn’t a cheap meal ($18 for a bowl) the portion was decent and there was a good variety. I had the garlic and wasabi, special and seaweed and would recommend. Overall 100% worth the visit, I would recommend!
Stella Seych — Google review
Got a poke plate as it was slightly cheaper than two poke bowls. Delicious but a bit pricey. We went at the end of the day, they only open Mon -Fri from 11-4 I think. So we got there before it closed and there were only 4 varieties to choose from. A bit expensive but good! Not really space to eat there, more a take out place.
Cindy Toms — Google review
It was very good for all pokes menu. i ordered overall pokes cross with my hubby and had opportunity to have. all flavors is amazing to us. and the most good thing is k-food menu such as elevated kimchi side menu!

Unfortunately we arrived a bit later in day (1 PM) and most of option was sold out. But even what we was able to get was really good! Definitely recommend go there earlier l, hopefully I will have chance stop by earlier to see full load and try it. Update: We went back after 3 days at 11 am and there was a plenty of options and absolutely delicious! So, highly recommended stop there earlier to pick one of your best poke on the island.

The brewery Kona Brewing Co. is a fantastic place to relax after exploring the shops and boutiques of Kailua-Kona on Hawaii's Big Island. Brewery tours are quick and personal, so visitors over 21 get to taste the products. In addition to cold mugs of Kona Brewing's top sellers, the pub also serves up pizza and live music on Sundays.
Came in for an early dinner around 5PM. Was seated in 10 minutes and service was great and fast. The beer menu had many options including wine and the non alcoholic Ginger Lemonade was delicious. Admittedly the food menu is slightly limited, including mostly pizza, apps, and a few entrees. Regardless, we ordered several pizzas and apps and everything was fresh and delicious. The Roasted Garlic App was to die for, would get that every time. The seating area was refreshing and beautiful. Definitely worth a stop if your in the area

We had an okay experience here. The beers were okay. The food was okay. The service was also just about okay. The location is quite nice, so we expected more from it. We're just bummed. We had the mixed grill plate. We only enjoyed the grilled sausage. The chicken and the pork were just okay.

Great food, mostly pizza, sandwiches, salads, and beer. They have a cool merch store, and you can get canned beers to go. The atmosphere was really low-key, and the food was really fresh. Nice staff all around. Parking is okay, but somewhat tight.

This brewpub is popular with both locals and tourists. The food menu is geared toward standard pub grub. Their pizzas are a hit with most guests. One of the charming things here is to try beers from Backyard Batches - limited editions experimental brews.

Really cool place. The food was good (pizza), and the waiter was attentive. We arrived at about 130pm after a brewery tour, and it was getting very busy. Food and drinks served in a timely manner. Definitely will come back if I travel to Kona again.

5 stars for the service and the tour, which was a lot of fun, very informative, and very generous on the tastings. They even bus you to the brewery, even though it's only a 5 minute walk from the restaurant. We also stayed for dinner and drinks after and were seated immediately and had fantastic service. 4 stars overall for the beer... Good quality but between Kona and Maui, I personally found Maui to be much more interesting and flavorful.
Erin Y — Google review
The food and our waiter were on point, the hostess was a different story which is why there’s not 5 stars. We ordered the Beer Queso and two pizzas, pepperoni and The Captains. I had there two Porter beers, highly recommended. The waiter was on point and fast with bringing out our food. The hostess was a different person all together, she was very rude. She was more focused on correcting our vernacular of calling the porch/patio a “Lanai”. I realize we’re in Hawaii and that’s what it’s called but we’re not local and was disappointed in the way she acted. The Hawaii Kai location is definitely a better atmosphere and much nicer hostess team.

When in Kona, on the Big Island, and you like beer, then you have to visit the Mother Ship for Kona Beer and some tasty food. This is where it all began for Kona Brewing and they have as many as 20 Kona beers on tap. Do a tasting flight of four or eight shots to pic you fav of the day and dig into one of their pizzas and a salad. Relaxed atmosphere, friendly wait staff and, oh yes, the Beer! We had the large Captain pizza and a small Cesar salad. Several small shops nearby for a nice stroll after eating. Most seating is outdoors under shade, small bar and a few tables inside. Be sure to walk around ... The walls inside are lined with some great Kona memorabilia and music legends. No reservations are being accepted, walk ins only. Was about $75 for two, including tip. Aloha!

Stopped here during our last day. Most seating is outdoors which is fine as weather was great. Recommend beer flight as there will probably be a few you want to try. We had the mana plate and pork tacos and both were terrific. Their Kona pulled pork, chicken and sausage were all very good with good portions.
Nick Kotch — Google review
Some of the best beer I’ve ever had! Their food is spot on as well. I got the Black sand porter, Castaway IPA, Lemongrass luau, and the Fire rock pale ale. I also got the pork tacos and a the brownie w/ice cream for dessert. Definitely recommend visiting!
William Rentz — Google review
So the restaurant is in the back of the brewery, a comfortable terrace, there is a host seating guests and they are very polite. The waitress was also fantastic and the food came very quickly. The waitress also made some recommendations for the beers and they were both great. The variety of the menu is very good for the beers. The food was a bit underwhelming, which can be understandable considering this is mainly a beer shack. The pizza was bland although the ingredients were plentiful, the pizza rolls were just pepperoni wrapped in a roll, nothing amazing, and the pulled chicken sandwich was mediocre. The chips served with it where crunchy, a bit too much I would say, but there are options for sides like mac and cheese and more. Prices are a bit high, but it's a local brewery in Hawaii, don't expect discounts. The music was good, and the ambience was making the whole place relaxed and laid back. There's a large parking lot right in front.
Nasos Laourdekis — Google review
A great option. We only had two of us and we were able to find seats in the bar area which is open seating. If you have a big party or come at peak times there may be a wait but I don’t think very long.. we had excellent service at the bar and the food was good. I think the best deal is for their slices of pizza. It was inexpensive. Husband raved about the buffalo chicken one I eat plant-based so I got the hummus which was so many vegetables that I could not finish it. I also believe they had an option for a plant-based burger, but I did not get it. We then did the brewery tour, which was cool to learn about the history and their processes. It seems to have plentiful parking that was not paid for however, we came by Uber (since we were at another excursion that an) and then we walked back to the cruise port which was about five minutes away. I had pre-booked the tour and needed a time change which would they were very accommodating and changed time with no issue. You get a free gift (key chain) on the tour that was a nice touch. I wish we could have just bought one of the cans of beer to go and not a six pack to take back on the ship but other than that a good time.
Patty Spradling — Google review
Nice open air shaded seating. Friendly attentive server got us started with a couple brews. I had the dark coconut beer which I enjoyed as a novelty. Then had the Kua Bay IPA which was excellent. For dinner we had Naahehu (loaded) nachos and a small Captain pizza. Both were very good and filled us up.

Fun tour at sunset (indirect). The tour guide was great and we had dinner afterwards. Nice service all around. The pork tacos were the winner at dinner (not pictured). I’m going to have to come back tomorrow to try that pizza!

I have been enjoying Kona Brewing Companies beer in Arizona for years now. My goal when I got here on Kona is to make sure I made it to the Brewery before I left. The Koko Brown Coconut Ale was INCREDIBLE. They certainly don't have that available in Arizona so that was a treat to have. Got the Pretzel Sticks and the Pepperoni Rolls for food and those hit the spot as well. Rounded out the whole experience with some Kona Seltzers which were very good. I would easily recommend stopping in for either food or definitely the drinks. Hope to be back in the future.
DejaVuDarkmist — Google review
One of the best brewery experiences I’ve ever had. Portions were a good size and even though we ended up sharing a small pizza we still had some to take home. The beer menu speaks for itself and since I couldn’t choose just one I went with a flight and was happy with all of my options. Would have loved to go back but the timing never worked out. We still can’t believe how good the pizza was!

Didn't try the food, but we did a guided tour and had a great time. Blythe was a fun guide who made our tour funny and enjoyable. We got the chance to sample 5 beers each was unique and delicious.

Good food great beer. It was a hot day so the fans were nice to have, otherwise there is indoor seating available. Service was a tad slow but they were slammed for the lunch rush so it was understandable. Recommend the pretzel and the BBQ chicken sandwich. The mac salad might just be the best I've ever had, I wish I could have gotten a growler of that!
Anthony Lanzarone — Google review
Been here 30 times. While I always try to order something else I end up regretting it. Get the slice and the salad. This is the best thing on the menu. Simple, inexpensive and good. The beer here is a lot of stuff you see at the stores. I always ask for seasonal options as they are ever changing and can be really great. Service While service is always pretty good what prompted me to leave the review today was Dan. Dan is really awesome at his job. He’s quick, attentive, polite. Everything a server should be. Thanks Dan. Atmosphere Good for young kids as they can play on the astroturf (small area). The outdoor seating is nice as there are many plants and shade. It can get a bit warm but that’s just Kona.

Beer and atmosphere are ahhhhmazing! Staff was too! But don’t go here looking for a good “all around” menu. Just wanted to try some beers and chicken wings…with a hummus plate. The hummus plate was like a deconstructed fresh salad that was more than we could eat! BUT DON’T GET THE WINGS! ⚠️ They were the smallest, fatty, disappointing wings I’ve ever had. I think McDonald’s could do a better job if they wanted. They were so small that the bones broke just trying to eat them and fatty to the point where I stopped eating them. Beer and wings should go together so disappointing but all else was good. @Kona, get better wings especially for the price or take off the menu 😉 Cheers 🍻

Kona Brewing CO Brew Pub is an excellent spot where you can enjoy ordering delicious food and pair it with a delightful glass of beer. Due to its popularity, be prepared for a wait, especially in the evenings. We began with the beer flight, a good choice if you want to explore various beer options. Our order included Poke, Fish Sandwich, and Hawaiian Pizza, all of which were delicious. The Poke and fish sandwich are made from fresh catches, so be aware that these dishes may feature different types of fish on various days. I highly recommend trying the poke; it was well-seasoned with a delicious sauce. I definitely recommend visiting this place.

I went reluctantly since I really wanted some local food. But : the location has outdoor seating, the beer is interesting and everyone found something they liked. The food was good and I strongly recommend the pork belly sandwich, the nacho chips were different then on mainland US, crispier, the pizza was tasty and we chose a garlic one/ you could really taste it. Kinda American food with a twist.

My wife and I loved our dinner at Kona brewing!! We’ve always been huge fans of the beer so it was so cool to go in person and try the different flavors. Also, the food was really good! It was pretty packed but our server Blake held it down through the chaos. It is a little pricy but so is everything in Kona! Overall great experience and we’ll surely return in the future.

Jackie Rey's Ohana Grill Hilo is a restaurant with a great happy hour, delicious food and friendly service. The restaurant is located in an old-style building in Hilo, Hawaii.
There is some good cookery going on here. All dishes were executed spot on and service was great. I ordered the duck feature and it's blend of acid, heat and sweet made it one of the best duck dishes I have ever had. Very memorable.

Quick Summary Easily my favorite restaurant on the big island. Service was fantastic and everything looked and tasted farm-to-table. Highly recommend trying anything with the Molokai potatoes and the spring rolls. Try to book a reservation to avoid waiting Food- 5 stars We ordered the Trio, the catch of the day, the spring rolls and the brownie dessert. Everything was spectacular. I highly recommend the spring rolls, anything to try the Molokai potatoes, and the brownie dessert Service- 5 stars Service was impeccable. Our server was fantastic throughout. I would highly recommend signing up for their rewards program if you live in Hilo Parking- there's some street parking and a small lot next door. Wasn't too hard to find parking during a weeknight Bottom Line This was my favorite restaurant during our time on Big Island, and it's a local favorite as well. This is a must-try for any visit on Big Island

You should book a table beforehand as this place tends to get busy. The food was fine, but nothing spectacular. The chicken in the pasta was a bit too dry, the dessert was pretty good and huge.

Don’t come to Hilo and miss out on eating here!! We ended up sitting at the bar and I’m glad we did! It has a great night-time ambience/vibe. At the bar we had the opportunity to met Char, who gave us great appetizer, dinner and dessert recommendations. Absolutely the most friendly person we’ve met on the island! I highly recommend trying the Tartare, ravioli and the brownie roll!

Happy Hour 4pm to 5om daily. Here are the secrets; 1) make a reservation, arrive at 4pm 2) park on the one way street 1 block up. Parking is free after 4pm. 3) order a lot of items. 4) tip more than usual 5) a party of 6 might get you the private dining alcove like we had. I love a great happy hour to try a lot of menu items at Very reasonable prices. They are not $5 anymore, but $6 & $7 is still a deal. This is a beautiful resteraunt with well executed food and professional service. The ahi tuna tartar with sauce was our favorite. The crusted brie platter is gorgeous, we would like an entire bowl of the pineapple topping. Make sure and put that on the delicious bread too. They even have a few happy hour entrees, not to mention some NA moctails on the regular menu. Enjoy.

Excellent food choices, flavor, and presentation. I had the hawaiian prawns with ravioli, which was amazingly tasty. The pasta was thin and not chewy like most, which allowed the flavor to come through. Hubby had fall-off-the-bone ribs which were delicious. Dinner was accompanied by well crafted drinks and followed up by delicious cheesecake. Highly recommend!

Amazing everything! The service was exceptional, the food was excellent and the place was beautiful. We arrived a bit earlier than our reservation and they were able to accommodate us after a short wait. Our server was respectful, accommodating and very friendly. We got the drinks right away, a bit of bread to share and waited for the main course. I got surf and turf, unlike what I am used to, it was chops and a giant butterflied prawn instead of steak and lobster, and all of it was super tasty and cooked the right temperature. The rest of the meals were good too, especially the risotto that came with the chicken dish, out of this world. I am hoping to visit again and try other drinks and dishes!

The food and cocktails were tasty. However my seafood trio was served mostly lukewarm, even the potatoes which retain heat very well. I also wish the lilikoi cheesecake had more of the sauce/sorbet.

The pork spring roll appetizer was a great start to our meal. We ordered the guava ribs and pork chop, and couldn't have asked for a better meal to go along with the great service. The prices are reasonable considering it's a little more upscale than the average Hilo restaurant.

Amazing restaurant. You won’t be disappointed! Get the Fresh Catch with purple mashed potatoes. Gave us a free dessert since we were celebrating our honeymoon. Such a wonderful experience, can’t wait to go back!

When in Hilo… Jackie Rey’s was our first Happy Hour spot and Jackie did her thing! Awesome island cocktails and on point cuisine! The ambiance is quite unique that it’s located in a 100-year old bank building! Good vibes here :)

What to say expect wow! Quite the culinary treat and if your comparing it to the resort very reasonable prices for the quality you receive. Staff was pleasant. Try wine Wednesday and get half off a full bottle, pair that with some Ono and wow!

Amazing seafood in Hilo. Stopped here after viewing Kilauea and my wife and I really enjoyed it. Best restaurant in Hawaii! We both had seafood dishes and wine. The food was fresh and cooked perfectly. Highly recommend.

Ate there on 9/27 soon after they opened. GREAT food and service. The greeter at the front door wasn’t very personable and kind of rude. Did we make a reservation? Umm no. I wish I could remember the server’s name because she was great and we never wondered where she was, even though she was busy. We would consider eating there again if we’re in the area. Parking was easy to find and we parked on the street about 1/2 block away.

I ALWAYS hear how good this place is to eat but, had no idea that they were open for lunch 😱😍 I was seated quickly as it wasn't crowded 🤙🏽 I had the pokē bowl, which was amazingly DELICIOUS 😋 and a blended drink which was equally delicious! The atmosphere & decor was very light & open. I can see it being really cozy during dinner 🤔 Definitely an ideal place for a bite to eat either way 🤙🏽 I'm DEFINITELY coming back for lunch again to try something new...much Mahalo 🌺

Great place and attentive staff. A little pricey but I guess you pay for the nice ambiance and healthy options. We tried the club med salad, fish and chips, and chicken with capers. We love the tartar sauce with the fish, basil dressing for the salad, and the capers with sauce were generous. Highly recommend to anyone when in the area.

The food was delicious and a reasonable price. I had the shrimp scampi (added a side salad-the sesame dressing was amazing!!!) and the Hawaiian margarita!!! Moana was an amazing server…this is a place you have to try. -Ashley from Gilbert, AZ

Amazingly delightful meal. Laid back setting but very elegant setting and professional wait staff. High End! Building is old bank which is amazing with 20+ foot ceilings and iron work. We loved it!

For the rest of my life, the Kalua Pork Spring Rolls will haunt my dreams. These were easily without question the best spring rolls I have ever had and in no way am I concerned that I am overhyping these for anyone reading this review. I'm not usually a "phone eats first" kind of person but for some reason I felt compelled to take some shots of my final lunch on Big Island. Everything was delicious, including the drinks which seemed to disappear before I could get a photo of them *hiccup* There are many many food options in this area but if I could go back and do it all over again I would start here for a solid lunch (just endless spring rolls) before doing a bit of bar hopping around Hilo.

This was our first time at Jackie Rey’s and we will be back! The service was great. I made a reservation a few days ahead and received a text reminder the day before and the day of. We arrived at 4:30 and had little wait time for food, which was perfect for our toddler. Our waiter was patient and helpful in explaining everything. He was very knowledgeable in each dish and how they were prepared. We ordered several entrees and shared around the table so we all could try a little of everything. We ordered the clam chowder, kalua pork spring rolls, surf and turf, lobster ravioli, seafood trio, chicken and shrimp pasta, and finished with the brownie roll, creme brulee, and lilikoi cheesecake. We were very happy with the prices of the appetizers. The clam chowder and kalua pork spring rolls were so perfect. Each of the entrees were great! We all agreed that the lobster ravioli was amazing, but we wished it came with more garlic bread. I do wish there were more mocktail options. I was disappointed to see only two. The deserts were so good. The cheesecake came with a small scoop of mango sorbet and it was so good!! We wished we got a bowl of that. The daily flavor of creme brulee was red apple, which surprised us how good it was. All the food was very fresh and prepared well. Overall, we are happy we tried Jackie Rey’s. We can’t wait to go again.

I feel you can’t go wrong in what you order here! The kitchen delivers spot on flavors and all cooked to order. Enjoyed the lobster ravioli w/delicious complex flavors and a tender, juicy bone-in pork chop that satisfied. Cocktails are excellent. An ordering snafu caused a delay however the server made it right, in a very sincere manner. Also its location is a former bank with super high ceilings and a very nicely done interior.

Hawaiian restaurant
Broke Da Mouth Grindz & Catering offers tasty, authentic Hawaiian and Filipino cuisine in Kona. The restaurant is known for its garlic furikake chicken and short ribs, as well as its pork adobo fried rice. Gluten-free options are available here.
This is hands down my favorite restaurant on the big island! We tried to come on our last trip, but they were closed the day we tried to go. We were better about consulting their hours this time though. Right now they're doing takeout only and they have no outdoor seating. There's a big grassy area in the parking lot that they could easily add tables to. That's where we ate sitting in our beach chairs. We got: - Two Choice Mixed Plate with Spicy BBQ Chicken, Spicy Garlic Furikake Chicken, Spicy Kimchee Fried Rice, and Chop Chae Noodles - Two Choice Mixed Plate with Meat Jun, Pork Belly Fat Adobo, Pork Adobo Fried Rice, and Kimchee Cucumber - Macaroni Salad - Ube Ice Cream Mud Pie - Lilikoi Lemonade The meats are fantastic. I loved every one of them. I can't even pick a favorite. The Chop Chae noodles were great as were the kimchee cucumbers. The Lilikoi Lemonade was fantastic. I wouldn't get the macaroni salad again. It was bland. The Ube Ice Cream Mud Pie was ok, but not very feasible with takeout. It was so melted by the time we could eat it. It's also just basically ice cream. The crust was so hard it couldn't be cut. I will be coming here on every trip to the big island now!

Want to give 4.5 stars but option not available and this many stars because I didn’t have a chance to try more. Looking for an authentic Hawaiian restaurant and found this wonderful place. Unfortunately no option to sit and eat but it worked out because we found a nearby area by the water and ate our dinner. As you can see from the pictures it was DELICIOUS! Better than my expectations only one thing the garlic chicken was a little hard to chew but other than that all was great. If I had more time I would go few more times. Definitely coming back next time.

Came here some years back when they were a full service restaurant and the food and drinks were amazing. So I was sad to see they had moved but happy they are still in business. The food wasn't as good as I remembered, but it was still good. Love the flavored lemonade. We also got the mud pie which was really good. Everyone was really nice and they were busy.

Delicious and worth trying while you are visiting. You can get the sampler plate and try 3 or 4 items. No inside seating. Long wait for food, so go early. The pork is juicy and amazing. Garlic shrimp is awesome, but you don't get enough (only 3 or 6). I could have eaten a dozen easily! Lots of free parking.

Food here was phenomenal! We had the kahula pork fries and the spicy garlic chicken. The chicken plate was more than enough for one person. You could easily get the pick two plate and share with two people. Also had the mango lemonade which was super tasty. Overall a must try restaurant when visiting the big island!

Kind of pricey, but quantity is pretty good. The chicken is so juicy, and so flavorful - for sure check it out. We also tried the pork belly which is actually fatty and tender, and there's so much sauce. Even the rice has great taste here. Enjoy!

It’s alright. Not sure the hype. Ordered the garlic furikake chicken. Wasn’t impressed, maybe they had an off day. Chicken was dry, no taste of garlic at all but they are huge pieces which is a plus. The sides are worth the hype. Mac salad was pretty dang good. The massive scoops of white rice were very delicious. 5.6/10 would give it another shot, maybe I need to order something different. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Pretty good spot. The garlic chicken did not disappoint. I went ahead and coupled that with the kimchi cucumbers. Amazing blend of flavors and made things a bit saucy and hot. Great suggestion by the staff and excellent choice before boarding my flight out east. Enjoy!!!

Been here a couple of times before but right now this place is pick up ONLY. The food is made fresh so you have to wait for a while. While waiting try the fresh juices they have in the fridge. All good and refreshing. However, the food was better the last time. The Kailua Pork was good but the rice was a bit hard. We also got the butter shrimp and it was suppose to be a garlic butter shrimp?!? No Garlic in my box. The furikake chicken was good but the rice brought it down. The Adobe fried rice with a side of egg was the saving grace. I can eat that all day but get it with the eagg and hopedully tou habe chili peppa water to douse it in.

1. The Purple Sweet Potato Salad has a refreshing taste. 2. The 3 Choice Mixed Plate, including shrimp, chicken, and beef, tends to be greasy. The beef, lacking spices or cooking wine to mask its gaminess, has a strong odor. 3. The Garlic Furikake Chicken Fries are tasty but excessively oily. Overall, the food here is too greasy, and towards the end, it becomes nauseating. It feels like each bite is equivalent to consuming one cup of oil. It would be better if they incorporated fresh vegetables to balance it out. After this meal, I really crave a vegetable juice to cleanse my palate. The service is average; even during the off-peak season with fewer customers, we still waited for almost half an hour. Unfortunately, there are no tables inside for dine-in.
Jianqiu Shao — Google review
I ordered the garlic furikake chicken and it was yummy! Serving was huge so you can definitely share with another person. It also comes with one other side apart from the two scoops of rice and the side orders also were pretty generous portions. Only downside is that there's no place to dine in, it's really just for take out but it's nice to bring the food to a park or a beach nearby. The wait for the food to be ready is quite long but worth it.
Anne Borja — Google review
Crispy and flavorful chicken. Side dishes aren't too bad either. Unfortunately, there is no dine-in option and the food became a little stale even after a short drive back to our hotel.
Mike H — Google review
The spicy garlic furikake chicken was extremely difficult to eat—overcooked and dry, which is difficult to believe because it’s dark meat. The flavors were good, but the chicken pieces were inedible. The pork belly fat adobo was tasty and cooked well. The meat jun was also pretty good, but would be better fresh instead of take out. Unfortunately we also got the fried chicken fries, which had inedible chicken as well. The fries themselves were good and interestingly shaped. The macaroni salad had too much mayo and not enough other flavoring. I was concerned to see a large tub of macaroni salad sitting out at room temperature near the food pickup for at least the entirety of our wait (it was sitting there before we arrived and we waited over 45 minutes). I was too hungry and tried the macaroni salad, while brushing away the worry and hoping I wouldn’t get Staphylococcal toxin poisoning (violently vomiting within 30 minutes or so) due to possible temperature abuse of food. Thankfully no immediate vomiting occurred. The staff were very friendly though.

Wow... This place is awesome. The Spicy Garlic Furikake Chicken, Pork Belly Fat Adobo and Kalua Pork were all out of this world!! Oh... And the flavored ice tea was a smash.... Had both the guava flavor and lychee flavor...SOOOO GOOD! This place is a must try! Enjoy.

I really miss their dine in location. But that same Amazing food is waiting for you to take home. The short ribs are Da Bomb 💣 The Mac salad is killer, as well as the purple sweet potato salad.

This was awesome. Pork Fries: 10/10. Delicious pulled pork. A perfect mix. Pork Belly Fat Adobo is really fat. Be warned. Delicious. But not that awesome in comparison to the garlic Furikake Chicken. Crispy skin and very tender. The fried rice was also delicious. No indoor seating. But go to the old airport beach to enjoy the food there. Better view anyhow.

The food is very good, and reasonable price. We got a lot of food for a good price. They all tasted good, especially the fried fish, awesome. The fruit lemonade is also good, real fruits in it, a little pricy but worth it somehow. It’s just there is no place to sit and no service lol. I guess everyone is there just for the food.
Lila C — Google review
I got the spicy garlic shrimp but I think my order got messed up because my food had 0 spice. Shrimp could have used more flavor. My husband got the pork and it was pretty average. Good portion size though!! It might have been amazing at one point but we did not feel that way. Definitely average. Maybe was hyped up by Food Network and vloggers. Homemade lemonade was pretty good though! I love that it comes in a mason jar so you can choose to take it home or give it back to the restaurant.

My honest opinion is this place is a 2. My son says a 3. It's not amazing food. And that's the short end of it. We ordered Garlic shrimp Garlic chicken and short ribs Kahlua pork. Sides Mac salad (just ok) Purple potato salad (gross) Sesame corn (gross) Brown rice (good) Fried rice (the better of the good) The shrimp is battered in the shell so you lose all the good stuff. Loads of butter. The chicken has the skin on it and it's as crispy as it should be. But good flavor. The short ribs seemed to be the favorite. If you eat here get the short ribs and fried rice. And a juice. Not enough flavor on some of the food tho. (Didnt get pics of all the food)

Heard some good things about this place so decided to check it out. It did not disappoint! Food was super tasty, serving sizes are pretty good as well. They do not have seating inside it’s take out only. But 4 min drive away is the old kona airport which has lots of parking and a nice quiet beach with tables to sit at.

Heard great things about this place. Decided to get lunch here on our last day on the island. I got the special of fish and chips and my sister got the spicy garlic chicken. Both plate servings were big! Honestly, 1 plate can be shared and leave both people satisfied. Both plates were also very delicious! Note that there is no indoor seating here, only to go.

Food tasted great. There is NO dine in. Wait times can vary 15 minutes to almost on hour. You either place order online or order at the register then have a seat until your called that it's ready. All of this self service and they have the balls to ask for tips 2x, when you order and the window where you pick it up. Before you've even tasted the food. Food was quite tasty especially the furikake chicken.

Let me start by saying fantastic food. This is a takeout only location with no place to sit and eat. We went down to the old airport Park and enjoyed the beach and scenery about 3 min away. Not a long wait for your food being there at 11:30. The Garlic Furikake Chicken was the bomb. The Jared lemonades are one of a kind too.

This is a takeout only place. The place is small place. We went at 11 AM opening time and there was very short line got filled up really quick. We ordered beef, short ribs, garlic, butter, shrimp, spicy furikake chicken with kimchi fried rice. There is no eating inside only picking up food.

03.19.2024 Day before we go home. We picked up lunch (2-item combo plates) before going to downtown Ali'i. We stop to eat and was amazing at all the yummy flavors (Garlic & spicy furikake chicken, adobo pork belly, kahlua pork with adobo fried rice, kimchi & purple sweet potato). And to our surprise, the portions were huge (definitely "broke da mouth") so we also have our farewell dinner too. Will definitely go back when we're in Kona!!! Compliments to the chef!!!
