Located in Keystone, South Dakota, Big Thunder Gold Mine is a fascinating attraction that offers guided tours of an original gold mine from 1895. Visitors can immerse themselves in the history of the area and enjoy gold and gem panning activities. The site also features a National Presidential Wax Museum with over 100 lifelike wax sculptures of famous personalities, including all presidents. Additionally, visitors can camp near the Mount Rushmore National Memorial at Horse Thief Lake.
We loved this place. The tour of the mine tells you the incredible history of the mine. It will also give you perspective. There are several cool things inside the mine itself that you'll want pictures of. There is also a barn outside the station with gold processing equipment from the time period. Afterward, you'll definitely want to do the panning experience. The technique is relatively simple, and you're very likely to find some flakes of gold. Again, this helps paint a picture of what some people went through in their search for fortune.

the mine went further back than we thought. fun experience the kids enjoyed it. they have an old mining cart that you can sit in for photos inside the mine. tour guide gave great facts about the mine the entire tour. if someone needs to have a wheelchair it's easy to push through the mine as well.

We had a great time. My only advice is if you have small children ages 5-10 for example, manage their expectations ahead of time. You get a lesson on panning from a guide, they give you a pan with dirt already in it, and if you have small kids they will probably dump it out and you don't get more. You are there for the novelty of it, the gold you get are small specs, if any. You can try scrapping the wash to see if you can find any other prices others missed, but while we had a good time my son who is 9 at the time left frustrated.

Visited in March. Tour was very informative, amazing to learn the slow processes back then, and about other mines of the time right here. Is a must stop for people interested in the history of the gold rush and seeing a real working mine and what all went into them. The kids loved finding real gold in the stream, and I loved the quick history. Recommend to everyone who is on the fence about going. Has something to offer for everyone.

Cool, kitschy old working mine to visit. Best part was the tour guide had lots of great info about how mining took place in that area back in the day before modern machinery. Very interesting. A good bit of walking and for us tall people the hard hats came in handy as some areas are a bit short. Fun place to check out. Temps are 50 in the cave which was nice on the hot day. We didn’t do the panning - but a lot of kids were having fun!

Amazing experience…. We got the half day claim package on Groupon. The lady behind the counter who runs it was happy to walk me around the shop and show me local stones I can find around the area. Trent the tour guide is amazing amazing! Very passionate, very knowledgeable. Could probably be a geologist anywhere, and does an amazing job teaching and making it fun!!
Timmothy Casey — Google review
We had a good time, just my son and I. Our tour guide was wonderful (I can’t remember his name but he is a Marine and his mother in law owns the mine)…the tour is not super long, but he made the most of the tour and really added to the story with his ability to compare it to the ease of things today. My son “panned” for gold after the tour, it would have been nice if the lesson was more than just a quick 2 minute tutorial. But it was something he really wanted to do on this trip. He left with a few flakes of gold…a cute souvenir. This is not a working mine and in the end it was a successful mine…other than the gold mine tour business the current owners have set up 😀
Megan Schemensky — Google review
Fun and informative tour of a real gold mine. Joe, our guide, was fantastic! He knew the history of the mind and the general area, how mining worked, and even my esoteric questions; where did they get the mercury from? A great way to learn about mining and its place in the history of the Black Hills.
Beth Fuller — Google review
Our family did the 4 hour claim mining and had a great time! It was definitely hard work but loads of fun! Trenton and Mitchell were great guides and gave us a solid history on mining in the area and an overall genuine experience. We found a few small gold pieces and quite a bit of garnet - the kids will remember this experience forever!
Sarah T — Google review
What a fun experience for our family! Our gold panning tutor and guide, Daniel, was fun and knowledgeable. We learned a lot of new things about how the gold seekers mined for gold back in the day. The mine itself was a marvel. To think these guys dug out this tunnel with just a few hand tools, black powder, and candles. Our seven-year-old was convinced it was impossible. Everyone was so kind and full of interesting facts about the mine and the area. Would definitely recommend.
Blythe Robbins — Google review
Great place to learn about the mining history of the Black Hills! Great tour and you can pan for gold even if you don't take the tour! Handicap accessible.
Becky Walker — Google review
We had an great tour of the mine. It was a perfect day for it as it was extremely hot and the mines are refreshingly cool. Brian, who is the maintenance man, did the tour and he was informative and funny. We chose this particular tour as it is dog friendly. Our dogs were welcomed warmly and enjoyed trotting through the cool mine. Would definitely recommend.
Nikki Germain — Google review
Great attraction to discover while visiting Keystone,SD. Joe was our tour guide and made it inclusive and fun for the kids! Got to experience a gold panning and informative tour. Be sure to see coupons in flyers/newspapers. Best prices and affordable gifts in town. Got my family all a discounted t-shirt and some trinkets for under $50.
Cameo McNeley — Google review
Fun experience, but way too expensive for what you get, especially the panning for gold. I hoped they would let me pan in the stream out front, but instead it was only in the small bin on the porch - the same one that every single customer pans through. No excitement of possibly finding anything more than a speck. It feels very staged. The tour guide is very knowledgeable, but it is a pretty basic tour. The store has lots of selection, but lots of gimmicky stuff like colored rocks and toys that are unrelated. I was super psyched to go, but felt I wasted my money after doing it.
Jennifer — Google review
Tour would have been better but maintenance guy filled in for regular guide and it was LONG!!! Too much talking, and about stuff that didn't pertain to the mine! We were in the mine itself for almost an hour and we had to miss the other part of the tour due to my husband's knees no longer able to take the standing. We also were not shown a demonstration by the Guide at the beginning of the tour how to pan but the tour right after ours did.
Cyndi Bowlby — Google review
Big Thunder Gold Mine was an amazing experience for us and our two large dogs! The entire site is dog friendly, including the shop, on-site panning, claim mining, and mine tour. We had a great time doing all of it, especially claim mining with our guide Jake. We dug our own buckets of paydirt out, sluiced them, and then he panned them so we didn't lose anything. The claim mining also comes with on-site panning and the mine tour, so we got to spend half the day there for our two hours claim. We left with several flakes of gold and a TON of tiny garnets. I checked out both this and the Broken Boot Gold Mine in Deadwood and this one had a lot more to do and a better setup.
Ariel Vajda Baldini — Google review
Awesome experience learning about local history and how to process for gold. Spent the morning with our very friendly and knowledgeable guide, Jake. Thanks again for a memorable experience. We enjoyed your talks! We will swing by again when we pass through!

Took a guided your of the place and was worth it. The tour highlights the perseverance of the German miners and their history. I highly recommend not taking small kids and infants into the mine since it's not very friendly at times.

The National Presidential Wax Museum is a must-see attraction for history buffs and American patriots alike, featuring life-sized wax replicas of U.S. presidents placed in historic scenes.
The Wax Museum was a perfect spot to stop after visiting Mount Rushmore. Very kid-friendly and interactive with listening devices, photo ops, short introduction clip and gift shop. It’s amazing how much detail goes into each presentation. The wax figures are extremely well-done! I highly recommend making this a stop on your trips in the area.

“Educational value, must visit”. My recent visit to the National Presidential Wax Museum located in Keystone had left a lasting impression. This museum is a fantastic showcase of our great presidents and their key milestones, including a poignant wax statue of President Bush at Ground Zero on the tragic 9/11. It’s a powerful reminder of our nation’s history. In addition to the presidents, the wax statues also include figures like Alexander Graham Bell, Neil Armstrong, and Thomas Edison. The highlight of the museum, especially for families, is the replica of the White House briefing hall. Watching kids step into the roles of presidents and parents capturing these priceless moments with their cameras is heartwarming. The museum also offers an onsite gift shop with a wide range of presidential memorabilia. I appreciated that the representative gave me consent to take pictures for this review, which speaks to their friendly and accommodating service. I highly recommend visiting the National Presidential Wax Museum; it’s a must-see attraction. It offers a unique perspective on our nation’s history and provides a memorable experience for visitors of all ages.
Mahesh Kokkula — Google review
Great museum and a good experience for kids. Some of the president's statues looked a little off but most of them looked life-like. The information that came along with the audio tour was both informative and entertaining. Our boys enjoyed the scavenger hunt which helped them get into the history behind the museum, and helped them learn a bunch. The gift shop had some awesome and unique items as well, most of which you probably wouldn't find in other museums.
Tyler Hecox — Google review
Very informative! Very lifelike scenes and wax statues of the President's. There is a life mask of Abraham Lincoln from when he was in office enclosed in a case. It is self-guided, inexpensive, and has an audio phone that you can enter the number of the display and hear about the president.
Koa-Marie Turner — Google review
Such an amazing place of life size wax sculptures. Most of the wax sculptures were perfect! The history of each through a walking tour headset was very interesting. I highly recommend this!!!

It was a very enjoyable experience to see all the displays of the presidents. Some seem very accurate while others not so much.
Gregg Fischer — Google review
A really fun and educational place to visit. The kids even found it interesting. All presidents were represented in great detail. I wish they had better lighting over the portraits at each display, otherwise I recommend.
Andy Galles — Google review
Thoroughly enjoyed the Presidential wax museum and from what the picture of some of the Presidents looked like the wax figures were very lifelike. I especially liked the Trump figure my wife liked the Taft even though her personal favorite President is Teddy Roosevelt. We had a fun time at the museum. Trump 2024!
John Underhill — Google review
Without a doubt the best wax museum I have ever seen. Great self guided audio tour. I learned so much I never knew about our past presidents.

A nicely done exhibit that continues to update and add features. Super friendly staff and the decent gift store. The White House press room was a big hit!! Well worth the time and money to pay a visit for an interactive history lesson.
Paul S — Google review
If you visit Mount Rushmore, this is the place you will need to visit. One recommendation: it'd be better if each president has a note of Republican party or democratic party.
Phuong Le — Google review
My dad and I decided to stop by during our vacation to SoDak on our way back from the Mount Rushmore monument. We were the only two in the museum and it was really cool! The receptionist was really kind and the figures were awesome! Some of them were a lot better than others, in my opinion, but it was still really neat to see the detail and all the time that was put into each figure! In the first part of the self guided tour, there is a presidential podium that you can send behind and take pictures with! On the podium there is a speech for both parties that you can recite and you appear on a TV to the right of you! That part was really cool! 😂 I'm glad we stopped by here!
Sariah Sauni — Google review
This was a fabulous experience that you can do at your own pace. Wasn't busy at all on a Saturday afternoon. Very informative and the staff is super friendly and helpful. A valuable history lesson for only $12. Highly recommend.

Very cool. A ton of information in one place. Plan to spend some time there if you want the best experience. There is a self guided audio tour that fills you in on all of our country's Presidents.

It's a great way to get out of the heat and enjoy being in air conditioning. Very informative and educational, without being boring. A side note is that they have one of the best gift shops in the whole black hills region. Great quality t-shirts with attractive and trendy designs! You can pretend to be the presidential press secretary for a cool photo op.

Located in the beautiful Black Hills woods, the Powder House Lodge features rustic wood cabins that can accommodate up to six people. The restaurant serves some of the best prime ribs in the Midwest and has a charming wood structure just like the cabins.
We just got back from staying in cabin 58, the trailblazer cabin. This was also our first time visiting The Black Hills and we definitely fell in love! The cabin was clean and nice looking, the beds were comfortable and we loved seeing deer just off from our deck. We had dinner two nights at the restaurant and the staff was friendly, and the food was delicious. We can’t wait to book our next vacation there.

I’m from Louisiana and my husband is from NYC. We know good food and we’re picky. We didn’t come to the Mount Rushmore area for the food. The Powder House Restaurant was a pleasant surprise. It’s the best food I’ve ever head in a “square state” 😅. I had a 12 oz ribeye and twice baked potato and my husband had the wild game platter with Buffalo, elk, and quail. Everything was delicious. The meat was cooked exactly how we ordered. I didn’t feel like the steak needed any sauce. This place doesn’t look “touristy” but delivers. Make a reservation or check in online or you may wait over an hour for a table. Our children were also well taken care of. The bartender gave our four year old cherries and lemonade and a hostess brought our little one colors and a coloring page when she saw he was unhappy. Highly recommended.

The service was just okay but the food was very good. We tried a variety of dishes and they were all delicious, from the steak to the pasta. Definitely recommend

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Great location to take in all that the Black Hills have to offer, and peaceful surroundings. Room was quaint and cozy and comfy. Note: pay attention to what the amenities are in the room, they are precise. We hoped we could cook some in the room, don't plan on it, small microwave and fridge is all. The staff were accommodating. No grills or fires, but they will bring you a nice gas grill if you ask. Ice in the office. Pool was good, clean and cool. Restaurant is delicious with some unique items... Tatanka and wapiti, walleye and trout (only ate dinner there twice). Can be pricey, we spent $60 and $80 with tip and drink for 2. Definitely recommend.

Visiting from out of state and my whole family was impressed! Staff was extremely inviting and welcoming from the very beginning. Short wait time, our server was at our table almost immediately. Wide variety of meals for all ages, and absolutely delicious food; we had the bacon wrapped trout and tortellini with vodka sauce. All members of the staff seemed happy to work there and the environment was so calm and relaxing. Thank you for such a great experience Powder House Restaurant! Kierra & Sebastian

The property uses a well for water. Before we arrived, they ran out of water, and they hauled water and filled a cistern that obviously wasn't clean and full of silt. The water pumped to the cabin was brown and full of particulate matter. Not only could you not take a shower, you couldn't even wash your hands. This was not mentioned during check in, despite the staff knowing it. As soon as we get in the cabin, we discovered the brown water and called the front desk and they explained that the water is clean and potable and safe to use. Instead of being upfront with the situation, they went with "don't believe your lying eyes" and act like nothing is wrong approach and treated us like we were stupid. We had 2 days booked, but checked out after one night. When the lady at the front desk asked how was our stay, I said they should have told me about the dirty water, she rolled her eyes and said the water was potable and safe and talked to me like I was an idiot. I replied that I was sure the water was clean in the truck that hauled it to them, but when you dump clean water in a dirty cistern, it's no longer clean water. She said, "Well your reservation was non-cancelable." It's important to note, this place has a restaurant. How clean can they get the dishes? If the staff would have been upfront and acknowledged the situation, I would have given a positive rating. Things happen.

Had an amazing time staying here. The cabins are spaced out well and on the hillside and gives you a great sense of privacy from your neighbors. We stayed in the honeymoon cabin and being able to relax outside in a hot tub was a fantastic way to start and end the day. We ended up having dinner and breakfast down at their restaurant as well. The servers were friendly, fast and stayed on top of things and the food was absolutely delicious. Will definitely stay here again when I’m in the area.

Restaurant is amazing. Definitely use the tool to request a table. Very busy place. Now I see why, excellent food and cocktails. Crab stuffed mushrooms were great and prime rib was amazing. Don't forget dessert! Great friendly service, Matt our waiter was fun and friendly. Great food and amazing service.

Very friendly staff and check in and at the restaurant in the morning. Clean room with extra towels and dog friendly. Only $15 per pet! Dinner is popular though so call to be placed on the waitlist if you’re headed that way. Looked like they had a decent selection of wine and a nice dinner menu. Breakfast was great and they give you a nice big cup of coffee.
Tammy Sandoval — Google review
Now only to be fair I only ate at the restaurant and didn't stay at the hotel. The restaurant has a Moose Lodge feel to it. It has plenty of seating all around with nice areas looking outside in the local hills. The food is all really well done, and you get plenty of it! This would have been a 5-star review except our waiter was either so shy or was so new didn't know how to service a table really well. If the server was a little more attentive to us this would have been an excellent review instead of a very good one! Don't take my experience as a bad or negative against this place. This was a really good place to go to eat!

This review is for the restaurant only. It’s in a beautiful cabin with large windows and an excellent view. It seems to be a favorite place for locals to dine. We arrived about 3:30 pm, hoping for a late lunch. We weren’t aware that the restaurant closes at 3:00 and reopens for dinner at 4:00. The friendly and helpful staff let us wait inside because it was pouring rain. I ordered the bison meatloaf which was wrapped in bacon. It was served with a delicious sauce, but the mashed potatoes don’t come with gravy. Our server explained at gravy isn’t common in South Dakota. My husband ordered the chicken parmigiana. The spaghetti noodles were thicker than traditional spaghetti, but the sauce & chicken were generally good. We plan to return on our next trip and will make sure to arrive earlier so we can try their lunch offerings.

We didn't stay here. Saw this cute restaurant just in front of the keystone. I'm so glad that we made the stop. A lot of locals eat here, and the food is excellent. We had buffalo steak and elk burger. They are marvelous. Definitely recommended, and the price is very reasonable.

We stayed and ate here for my birthday and it was delightful. The food in the restaurant was amazing, with excellent service. I had the vegetable wellington and I wish I lived closer so I could go more often. Our room was beautiful and updated and the bed was really comfortable. We will be back for sure and I've already told several friends about it.

Great room, facilities, restaurant, and location. I’m so glad I chose this place for my Black Hills trip. 3 meals a day are available 50ft from my room. We had prime rib and crab cakes on the first night and both were perfect. Our waitress, Kenna was great. Our bartender was also great, but I don’t remember her name unfortunately. We were helped by half a dozen others in the restaurant and check in desk and they were all very nice.

Love this place! Cabin was clean and neat! Conveniently located to all of the attractions, like with in 12 minutes to Mt. Rushmore. The restaurant was great, they knew we had just driven in after a 10 hour ride- let us order food even though they were closing! Staff and front desk were so pleasant to deal with! Definitely will recommend this place!

Food was excellent and service was very good. Enjoyed it so much that we came two times during our five night visit to the area. Baseball steaks were delicious and perfectly cooked. They could rival any Ruth’s Chris or Morton’s, but at a reasonable price. Chicken parm and cordon blue were both very good. Parking lot was tight, and be prepared to have a short wait for a table, but they have a small bar in the back and you can have a drink on the patio while waiting. So glad we happened to find this gem.

For their first time doing lunch they made amazing food and drinks. Our server Cliff was very friendly and was a great help. The burgers were amazing along with the deathly hollows butter beer. Plus the presentation of the food when it comes to the table was perfect. If you like a little spice I’d recommend the holy terror burger. Also I’d recommend the deathly hollows butter beer frozen cocktail if you are of drinking age.

Great location out of the hustle and bustle of downtown Keystone, but just a couple minutes away. Property is beautiful and nestled in the woods. Cabins had all the basic amenities you would need. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. We traveled with a dog, and this was a great location to have a pet with you. Restaurant had good options and was tasty. Would definitely stay here again.

Review for restaurant only. We were hoping for an old school supper club experience and that is exactly what we got at the Powder House! Beautiful atmosphere, wonderful and professional service. My husband loved the Game Meat Sampler entree and I enjoyed the Buffalo Medallions. All of the meats were tender and well seasoned. They have a large menu and everything sounded so good it was hard to choose! Be sure to call ahead about an hour before you want to eat and get on their waiting list!

Had dinner at the Powder House restaurant on Saturday (9/16). The restaurant interior was extremely nice. Service was exceptional. We ordered and highly recommend the Wild Game Sampler (featuring Elk medallions, Bison short ribs and samples of house made Elk and Bison sausage). The meal was incredible to say the least. We topped dinner with a cherry - rhubarb crumble. Make Powder House your dinner destination when visiting Keystone (Mt Rushmore) SD.

The renowned Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a popular tourist destination in the US, featuring a massive sculpture of four former American presidents carved into a granite mountainside. The faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt tower 60 feet above ground level and draw nearly three million visitors annually. Visitors can watch an informative film at the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center highlighting the purpose and process behind creating this iconic monument.
A wonderful piece of Americana accessible to all. The park has many modern refinements including a museum with video streaming a gift shop restrooms and a restaurant. There's also covered parking available. Inexpensive and cold this time of year so be prepared. City of keystone mostly closed so don't plan on seeing anything there. Definitely worth the trip.

We planned our visit to be there just before dark to see the memorial and then stay for the lighting ceremony. It was an amazing experience. The ceremony does a nice job outlining the men memorialized on the mountain as well as gives nice detail and background to the undertaking of creating it. I would not change a thing about our visit, the weather was perfect, crowd size was great (busy but not packed) the drive up and down as well as parking was simple. Walking through the flags of all the states on the way to the amphitheater…just an amazing and moving experience. I recommend a visit to all.

I first visited here in 1992 and could just drive right up close without having to pay to get a view. $10 parking, $5 senior citizens discount price. I enjoyed the hiking trails and stayed past dark for the lightning ceremony that lasts about an hour. Arrive about an hour before dark for a good seat. I didn't mind standing at the back because I was 1st to exit ahead of hundreds of people.

An absolutely must see for any American! I would even say if you're a foreigner touring the U.S., you need to stop by and see Mount Rushmore. It's not too far of a drive if you're coming from Rapid City. I suggest bringing some snacks for the trip but there is a little town before you get into the main Mt. Rushmore area. It's an incredible monument and is definitely worth seeing.

The video was very informative. I was there Sunday, Feb 25, 2024, and there were very few people there. It cost $10 to park, and admission was free since it's a national monument. As you can see from one of my pictures I was literally the only person on the entire observation deck.

Visited Mount Rushmore in July. Easy to visit with plenty of parking and easy path up to view the monument. I’m sure you could spend longer here but we were in and out in less than an hour and thought that was plenty of time. There is a little car park just out side the park on the side of the road which gives you a great view if you don’t want to pay or have a different angle. I’ve put the map to it in my photos. We really enjoyed our visit and recommend.

Loved loved it! You gotta visit this monument at least once in your life. Parking is good for 1 year as well which is great. My little family and I took a trip to see this beauty during spring break. The weather was wonderful even in March. It was not crazy busy like it's prime season so I recommend it even though most things are not open until April and May. I still loved the fact that it was not overly crowded. We all loved the trail hike and seeing it up closer. A great nature trail walk. We also loved seeing all the flags of each state which was really cool.

This was one of our stops along the way on our cross-country road trip, and it did not disappoint. To be able to check this off my bucket list was great. Pictures do not do this justice. If you are road tripping and plan on visiting more than a couple national monuments or parks, I highly suggest getting yourself the America the beautiful park pass. It's good for a year, and well worth it. There's a bit of a walk up to it from the parking, and you have to pay for parking. There's a small cafe/restaurant that you can eat at while there, as well as the obligatory gift shop. Extremely glad we got to see this in person.

This is a memorial to American icons. Plain and simple. It is big and impressive and patriotic and all the things we are good at here in America. Seeing it in person is a moving experience, but it is crowded and hot in the summer. It is a must-see for anyone traveling through the Black Hills.

This is a MUST visit, and I'm not even American. After the disappointment at Crazy horse we visited this National memorial and it was awesome. We had the place for ourselves, it was freezing cold tho but a great experience. This is something you have to add to your bucket list. Don't forget if you are in the area to visit Badlands and Wind cave national park.

Finally dream from childhood achieved. When I was young, and watched TV, most of that time was Cartoon Network, and few time I saw that sculpture in few cartoons. Finally I can see them in my own eyes. I’m polish so most of American things is nice for me. Anyway, that possible to see 4 presidents of USA on a big mountain, something big. Catch some pics from that trip ✌️ P.S. was cold 🥶

There are so many areas you can go to get an excellent view. Informative video. Don't forget to go see Crazy Horse! The museum and other buildings are packed full of details. What can I say about this historic monument that hasn't already been said yet? Mount Rushmore is a fantastic place to visit. The place is beautiful, clean, full of interesting information and family friendly for all ages. You only pay for parking, which is 10 dollars. The place built around it is very well done. It has a restaurant with several food options, restrooms scattered around the place, trails to see the monument up close, theaters showing a short but informative film about the place, etc. There is a huge gift shop with many interesting items too. Always a great time visiting one of our countries monuments. We brought our Dog and Mount Rushmore is not so much Dog friendly. That being said it was still worth the stop. Me and my wife took turns in the gift shop and viewing area. Dog is only allowed right before the gates . There is a spot you can take your dog to the right of the park and you are able to view from there. Parking is only five bucks if you are senior, ten for everyone else. First picture is from pet viewing area.

We had a wonderful time, seeing the monument and learning about all the history together as a family. The parking was insanely affordable and also extremely accessible. It was an easy walk, and the crowds were minimal, allowing us to take a lot of cool pictures together. The staff were all very knowledgeable and extremely friendly.

It’s worth the trip, but it can’t be your only reason for going to South Dakota. I’d strongly recommend adding some other places to your trip, since really the most time I think you can really enjoy yourself here is like 6 hours max. And that includes the hikes and the tours. See some of the nearby caves or go a little further out of the way for some local foods. The whole area is gorgeous.

Sculptor Gutzon Borglum created this famous mountainside carving of the visages of four great American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. The carving is awesome and it looks more beautiful in person. The memorial is well maintained. There is paid parking service, they are charging for National park pass holders as well, which we didn’t liked. The gift shop is nice. The staff and park service officials are well knowledgeable and always help others and answers their queries nicely.

I was not sure what to expect when I saw the monument other than some guys heads on the side of a mountain. But this was an amazing experience to see the artistry and history behind the making of this monument. We went once in the morning when it was absolutely pouring so there was a weird effect that made it look like their noses were running, but, there was also no one there. We then went later that night to see it lit up by the spotlights which by then the rain had stopped and the stone dried to get some nice shots. The gift shop was also great and I bought far too many souvenirs while there!

Great artistic and patriotic work in the beautiful black hills of South Dakota! Truly astounding! A cafe, gift shop and restrooms are available. The best part would have to be walking the Presidential Trail and seeing Mt Rushmore from different point of views as well as the surrounding forestry, be warned however, it boasts 425 steps and will get you winded! Great area for birders as well! I went early on a weekday and not many people were around, perfect for reflective moments, soon as it started to get crowded in the afternoon I did feel like the area wasn’t big enough for so many people and it will definitely affect your experience if you go when it’s packed. All in all, it’s an experience every American and tourist should see for themselves!

My wife and I had visited in August of last year. It was crowded and hot and we had our pet with us. It was a nicel experience. This time we came with no pet and was able to take t he short .6 of a mile presidential trail. Believe the signs. It's definitely a workout but well worth it. You get a new perspective. It was a very enjoyable hike. Photos are all from the trail except one or two.

We visited the park as part of a group one year in October. It was windy and cold. But the park was easy to navigate and we had a lot of fun. It's amazing how close you can get. There's a lot of history, and you can even see right up their noses!

Mount Rushmore, a symbol of American history and ingenuity, evokes a mix of emotions for visitors, from awe at its grandeur to discomfort over its controversial past. Set amidst the rugged beauty of the Black Hills of South Dakota, Mount Rushmore stands as a monumental tribute to some of America's most influential presidents. Carved into the granite face of the mountain, the larger-than-life sculptures of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln are a testament to the ideals and aspirations of the nation. For many, the historical significance of Mount Rushmore is reason enough to visit. Walking the Presidential Trail and gazing up at these iconic figures, one can't help but feel a sense of reverence for the leaders who shaped the course of American history. The accompanying exhibits and visitor center offer valuable insights into the creation of the monument and its place in the national consciousness. However, it's impossible to ignore the darker side of Mount Rushmore's history. The monument sits on land that is sacred to Native American tribes, and its creation involved the desecration of a site held sacred by the Lakota Sioux. For some visitors, this knowledge casts a shadow over the experience, prompting reflection on the complex and often painful relationship between indigenous peoples and the United States government. Practical considerations, such as parking, also merit mention. While the parking facilities at Mount Rushmore are adequate, the cost of parking can be a disappointment for budget-conscious travelers, adding an unexpected expense to the visit. Mount Rushmore is a site of undeniable historical significance, offering visitors a glimpse into America's past and the ideals it holds dear. However, its troubled origins and practical drawbacks may give pause to some, reminding us that even the most iconic landmarks are not without their complexities and controversies.

Beautifull. We parked the car there for 10 usd (ticket valid for 1 year after purchase) and then we walk for 3 - 4 minutes to the scenic area. The view is amazing. There is a museum downstairs and gift shops. In April was not busy at all and most shops in town were closed.

Rushmore Tramway Adventures is a family-friendly amusement park with rides, attractions, and views of Mt. Rushmore. The tramway takes visitors up the mountain to view the landmark before descending back down again. There is also a zipline and an alpine slide for riders of all ages to enjoy.
We took the chairlift up and down. We enjoyed the landscaping very beautiful lots of flowers and butterflies. They stopped the chair to give us time to get off and on. We were able to see young ones taking the alpine slide down below us while on the ride up and down. It was a great experience. Very hot but Beautiful breeze and cooler temperatures on top. We are age 70's . I highly recommend visit to top and enjoy your surroundings. Mt Rushmore also visible.

The zipline tour was amazing, we had a great time!! Thanks to Brandon and Melvin, they are the best tour guides! The views were spectacular, the zip lines exhilarating, and the harnesses were surprisingly comfortable. I highly recommend this place!

I get that this is a tourist attraction, but the prices are just outrageous. It's $18 for one adult ride down the alpine slide, $10 for kids. So for my husband and I, and one child it was $46. I just don't feel like the value is there for something that lasted less than 5 minutes. Granted you get to ride a ski lift to the top of the slide, but that's not what I was paying for. I'm still happy we did it. I was a very cool experience, just pricey.
Megan Kemper — Google review
We've gone here every time I come home to visit and my kids always like it. This last time it was way more expensive, granted there are a lot more attractions all of which cost an awful lot to do. $20 to ride down once is a lot to me AND the fact that you have to pay to ride the lift up and down is crazy to me. But it's a huge tourist attraction and people come and will pay that amount. It's cool there is a Restaurant up top to eat and it's really pretty up there too.

We had not planned to go here this particular day but so glad we did! We had so much fun here. A fantastic family experience, although some rides require a person to be at least 50 lbs. All the employees (which appeared to be HS & college students there for summer jobs) were friendly and helpful. I was impressed with everyone's attitudes and demeanor. We only had a few hours to spend there, and rode the tubes, chair lift, alpine slide, and zipline. I wish we had gotten there early and stayed all day. For the 3 of us (2 parents and a 9 YO) we spent about $150. They do offer an "ultimate package" for $80 apiece. Just down the mountain from Mt. Rushmore.
Renee Archer — Google review
We pre-ordered online, but the site would not allow us to sign wavers, so we had to do that there. Price seemed a little high. The options to do were very fun. Do wish that with the ultimate pass, they would let you do the zip line more than once. Would also be beneficial if you buy this pass and do not want to use it for a certain thing that you could do something else to replace it. They have great options for different skill levels on the aerial park. The zip line was fun. The tube ride was fun for the kids. The alpine slide was fun, but do please be careful with your speed!
Rebecca Flannagan — Google review
$20 for chairlift + alpine slide, $25 for the zip line. You also can do $85 for the combo tickets, which is you can play all the them once, kids 6-10y is cheaper, 2y and below are free. It was amazing. You’ll not disappoint
Jesscia Ma — Google review
Pretty pricey, but we still had fun. DON'T buy tickets in advance. The website is very confusing on what you're buying and it just caused a mess when we got to the ticket counter (although the staff was SUPER SUPER friendly and got it fixed right away). The tube slide is super fun, so glad for the people mover to get you to the top instead of a billion stairs! Great touch! The burger place at the top was just ok. Again, pricey, but they have lots of seating in the shade and you have views of Mount Rushmore and they have a really pretty garden up there. The staff working the burger place were VERY VERY slow. You can tell its a bunch of high school kids that don't have anything better to do so they aren't in a hurry. It made the wait SUPER long. So don't be in a hurry if you plan to eat there. Just sit and enjoy the views and the scenery and the shade.

We were lucky enough to have Davy and Avery and they were so sweet and knowledgeable, and pretty darn funny too. Side bonus, Avery plays the best music! The experience was very fun and beautiful. I'm terrified of heights and felt very safe. I would definitely go again.

The kids had a blast. The tubing was fun. The youngest was able to ride on their own. Tree trekking was fun to watch the kids as they climbed all around.

I can't wait to go back to this awesome place. We have been here years ago. And it's worth going back, they added so much more! This time we tried the aerial adventure, which is a height obstacle course with ziplines, ladders, tight ropes, and other challenging obstacles to maneuver through. Of course you are in a safety harness and they teach you the locking system, which took me a little to get use to but caught on to it. I would recommend staying with your group incase they need a refresher to lock in and out of each obstacle. I'm 41 and my twin 15 year Olds did it as well, they really enjoyed it too! Lots of different levels of difficulty for lots of ages. Can't wait to go back and do more courses! Easy to get to in Keystone. Make sure you go on a nice day, it started to rain and thunder and some things had to be shut down..understandable for safety.

BaRLee's is a casual family restaurant that specializes in homemade food and cocktails. The menu has items like wraps, salads, burgers and chicken strips, as well as smoked meat entrees. The wait for the blooming onion was long but the food was good overall. The bartender/manager Melissa was great.
Pulled pork was super yummy…love the real cut French fries. My soda didn’t taste right but owner was real nice about changing it. Hubby thought his chicken was a little over done but still ate it, waiter took some off the price without us even saying anything, which was nice but truthfully we weren’t gonna complain. My daughters chicken strips were tasty too. Service was quick but kind of wondered why they were bringing food in from outdoors and realized the kitchen was upstairs. Wasn’t sure about that but food came quickly enough that the temp was still quite warm.

Had a patty melt and blooming onion, both of which were very good. Had to wait a while.for the blooming onion but we had a few drinks and good conversation with the bartender/manager Melissa who was awesome! We were hoping for the beuben but they were out of corned beef, but everything else was very good. Oh and their French fries are hand cut and delicious, ask for them crispy. We'll come visit again because of Melissa.

I was hesitant to try Barlee's after reading a few reviews but I wanted to try it for myself. I went mid afternoon and there were a few groups eating on the outdoor patio. I ordered the Reuben and fries and it was very good. It was a little slow to arrive (25 minutes) considering the time of day and that I only ordered a sandwich but I want in a hurry and i really enjoyed the food when it arrived. The bartender/waiter was polite and attentive.

There were four of us for lunch and we all agreed the food was probably the worst we've had. French fries were cold, walleye was supposed to be grilled but came fried and breaded (I did not complain because I didn't want to wait another hour to get food) the patty melt was not good and the chicken sandwich had soggy bread. Not good.
Deanna Contonikolas — Google review
The bar/restaurant is nice. The waiter was polite. The bartender was nice. However, the food was by far the worst meal we have ever had. The burger served was raw in the middle, the fries were like they had been reheated several times in a microwave. It was bad enough that we could not even eat it, paid and left it on the table. Very high priced for this quality. Tasted horrible all in all. After leaving and reading some more of the reviews, I will agree with the ones that are not so nice. And after reading the replies to the reviews I would suggest that apologizing would be better than trying to shame the guests. They are the bread and butter of the food service! Fixing your problems of the reviews that are not good and you won’t get as many bad ones but more good ones.

I am a pescatarian and am traveling through the midwest, so my options are relatively limited. I ordered a black bean burger that was not very good. It was very doughy and lacked flavor. However, my husband is a meat eater and tried the BBQ chicken. He rated this chicken in his top favorite ever (for you meat eaters out there). He also ordered a buffalo burger and loved it. Hope this helps you on your food hunt! P.S. I have a feeling they make good bloody mary's here, although I didn't try one.

We looked at the menu online and thought it looked good so we went there. We were greeted by a female bartender who sat us. We looked around and saw that no one had food. Then we looked at the menu and it was not even close to what the menu online looked like. It only had a portion of the food on it. We noticed that they charge 75 cents for a glass of water. The bartender/ waitress came over to our table and my wife asked if they really charged for water and the lady very rudely said they do because they were in a drought and their water bill had gone up. She had an attitude so we decided to leave without ordering. The place is a real dive with rude help. Eat and drink somewhere else.

Great food - Bad service We chose this restaurant, among many others in Keystone, because of the huge smoker outside. Here you will find some very well-cooked and smoked bbq ribs.. The food tasted so good! But what lack of service. We ordered appetizers and main course. After a long wait, finally some of us (3 persons in total) got the main course, but the waiter had totally forgot our appetizers. Had to call her again for forks and knives. To be honest, she did a good job trying to serve us, but she where clearly stressed. She took the time talking to us, which defiantly made us relax and calm. We gave her a huge tip for her engagement despite the situation. Even the waiters were running around in the kitchen?! I think the problem is higher up in the hierarchy. The employees did all they could trying to put out fires. Can't remember our waiters name, but we did told her that she did a good job. We were there, 3 guys, late night august 31, 2018.

Don't enter at the bar if you are eating there. Go upstairs. Slow service. Burned potato skins with mostly skin. Half the menu is marked out with black marker. Women's bathroom needs a good cleaning. Fantastic! Great simple atmosphere, good prices, fantastic people. Taco salad was a perfect change after all the burgers on the road. The bathrooms are even decorated in fun ways. Excellent food and service. Burgers are hardy before you get toppings in it. Couldn't fit mouth around it so I had a mouthwatering mess. Teenage son stopped after his single burger and I couldn't pawn off half of my double so you know servings are not small. Hidden gem with great prices. All sandwiches are between 10-12 bucks. Good deal for being in tourist central. Wasn't busy so writing a review because people are missing out.

They were closed for the season? It was September 12th for crying out loud. Enjoyed going to Ruby’s instead... I am sure we received the better end of the deal by eating at Ruby’s! Update: I appreciate the information on your reason for closing while we were in town. It’s just that we were so hungry for a good burger and I was drooling after reading all the good reviews on your site. I guess what I didn’t expect was to see the hours you were open online and then see that you were closed. My apologies for sounding so abrupt but I was so hungry for a burger!! Thank you for understanding!

If you're like me and are skeptical about any restaurant in a touristy town since so many are awful AND overpriced, this place does NOT fit into that mold. The burgers are some of the best I've had, the toppings fresh, and the buns are baked by the chef himself (he asked for an opinion of his latest version, which although not 100% yet at the time of this review, still way better than most places). You can even get a yak burger if that's your thing, but that kind of meat is too lean for my taste so I can't comment on their quality (nor the buffalo or elk burgers). The price is a little high if you're thinking of a typical burger joint, but in this case you are paying for a quality meal and, even so, $10 for a burger and fries these days is not that unreasonable. It's off the main drag so unfortunately it doesn't seem to be getting the foot traffic it should, but don't let that dissuade you from giving it a try.

Leading coffee shop in Keystone with a wine and provisions store on the ground floor, lounge seating, patio, and games.
This place is so cute! I love that they have a dog park for the fur babes and then a playground for the kiddos. My family and I enjoyed toasted bagels and a wine flight then after went in for some coffee. I spent a lot because I bought some shirts but the food and drinks were all reasonably priced. Staff was super friendly too!

Loved it! The coffee was good. The food was good. The gelato was delicious. The atmosphere was amazing. They had beautiful flower pots with bright red geraniums all around the outside. The outdoor space was really beautiful and had Cornhole, a cool outdoor foosball table, giant chess boards, awesome outdoor seating, and a playground. The kids had a ball and I got some quiet time to drink my coffee. The inside was beautifully decorated and had some really cool coffee mugs for sale. Loved it!

The atmosphere matches the service, just perfect. Wasn't sure what drink I wanted and the barista nailed it. The outdoor amenities makes you want to stay all day and enjoy the views and peaceful jazz music.

Stopped in for a bagel on the way through town in June, 2023. The Grapes & Grinds is what it sounds like. A nice little coffee shop and wine bar. The outside is really nice with Adirondack chairs and other nice places to relax and have coffee or a glass of wine. Just a nice place. Inside is no different. Very well done. And of course, a gift shop that every place seems to have in towns like this. I ordered a bagel, which cost approximately $5. I found the price of the bagel to seem higher compared to most places with the same offing. But other items such as coffee or such didn't seem drastically higher than other places. I paid with a credit card, so of course it wants you to tip them. I don't care for pre tipping. I especially don't care for pre tipping when there is no actual service rendered. But I worry that some people may retaliate if they see you don't tip. As such, I feel extorted a pay a tip. I'm not saying anyone there would do such a thing, but the possibility is there. In this case my instincts were right about tipping before an actual service. When I got where I was going with my bagel, I found they only cut the bagel in half. They put the spread inside and you have to put the spread on yourself. Good thing I didn't want to eat the bagel while on the road to make time. I would have to pull over to make my own bagel that I just paid G&G to make for me. So where is the service. I guess you now have to tip for just handing you a bagel. You basically have to make the bagel yourself. Speaking of this $5 bagel, it was by no means a bagel in my definition. It was nothing more than your basic roll. Nothing about it looked, had the distinguishing characteristics of a bagel, or even tasted like a bagel. No I bought a $5 roll with spread I had to put on myself. So don't waste your time with these bagels, unless you never actually had a bagel. Now I don't want to totally down play the rest of the offerings at Grapes & Grinds. They may be excellent, I don't know. I'm only expressing my opinion on the service and product I paid for, yet feel I did not receive. Unfortunately I can't give them a second try since I was only in the area briefly. So I am still giving them a total of four stars because they may be very good everywhere else. And the decor and environment of G&G is very nice. So do give them a try and form your own opinion.

My friend and I stopped in on our way to Mt. Rushmore, G&G was the perfect calm breakfast spot with plenty of coffee options and outdoor seating. The cafe is clean and modern and offers a good respite from more touristy options. The gelato looked delicious and G&G partners with a local bakery to source their bagels so you can’t go wrong. Get a bagel, get oatmeal, get a smoothie, and stay awhile!

Before you continue you should know the previous two mornings we had horrific hotel coffee so this review might seem biased because that’s what I’m immediately comparing it to. The hot chocolate was excellent. Nothing negative to say about it. The hot white mocha coffee was excellent. You get an immediate hit of sweet white mocha and the coffee is strong enough to power through for the finish. If I were to compare it to Starbucks, I’d have to say it was slightly superior. Given the option, I’d choose this cup over theirs. The iced caramel Frappuccino was also very good. It wasn’t quite sweet enough but a quick ask to the staff and they happily gave it a few more pumps of caramel and couldn’t have been kinder. They were all smiles. All in all this was a nice spot with good coffee mixes. There’s a slight chance I’d look for maybe something better but if I’m back in this neck of the woods again I’d be more than happy to return. They also had some fun little games out front which is a plus!

What an AWESOME place. Great food, coffee, and atmosphere. Kid friendly with lots of space for them to play outside. Patio area was wonderful with good music and outstanding design and taste. Very friendly staff. I'd add this place should be the paragon for modern coffee shops.

Best cream cheese I’ve ever had on a bagel!! And the bagel was as perfectly toasted as Anakin Skywalker when Obi-Wan said “It’s over Anakin, I have the high ground” and Anakin replied, “You underestimate my power!” and Obi-Wan exclaimed, “ YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE! It was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them! To bring balance to the Force; not leave it in darkness!” and Anakin yelled “I hate you!” and Obi-Wan, heartbroken, replied, “ You were my brother, Anakin…I loved you.” before Anakin was toasted into flames. Yum! The gelato looked heavenly but unfortunately I was too stuffed from my perfectly amazingly toasted blueberry bagel to try any. Also, the blueberry bagel had entire chunks of blueberry in it! Scrumptious!

I love on the road as a musician. GregHager.Com Always striving to find a great place for coffee on the road of life, we drove by and stopped into this place. Serving local wines and coffee as well as sweet goods and bagels they have what you need. The most amazing gelato is also available for sale. You won't be disappointed. Bright, airy, modern, yet very warm and friendly staff make this a place you'll want to come back.

The absolute best coffee shop in the area that we have been to. The iced caramel macchiato and the iced Carmel latte were AMAZING!!!!!!! The smoothies were delicious as well as the muffins. There was adorable merchandise in the stores. The absolute best part was the outdoor seating area and playground. We are sad we found this at the end of the week because we probably would have gone every day of our vacation. It’s a must do!

Family restaurant
Peggy's Place is a small family restaurant in a hole in the wall near the shopping district. The food is good, and they offer comfort foods like chicken fried steak, patty melts and bread pudding. They're also known for their cinnamon rolls, which are some of the best around. They only take cash, so be prepared!
It was 5 minutes til 2pm....they close at 2pm.....we were going to go because we didn't want to be rude...the cook, waitress and manager all talked us into staying, no problem. Very sweet bunch. We ordered and got the tastiest Blt's w/ fries. Reasonably priced. Glad we decided to stay.

We stopped because it was an easy spot to pull in at Keystone to eat and not have to fight with parking downtown. The food was really good and the staff was friendly. It did take about 35 min to get our food, but we weren't in a huge hurry. Definitely loved dipping my hubby's ff in the honey mustard dressing from my salad. Limited hours right now. Closed at 2.

Warm welcoming when we entered. Friendly staff! These folks are not afraid to feed you. I wish I was able to take more food pictures before we devoured our meals. Bacon good! Biscuits good! Hashbrowns good!!

Thought we'd stop, but this place doesn't exactly seem welcoming. I'm not a big fan of Biden or the orange goblin, and skip out on any business dumb enough to wade into politics. Also, you might be time to read the Bible verse that you posted. Hard pass.

OMG. I can't say enough about this place. The staff was really attentive and friendly. The food was fantastic. Definitely home made. The cinnamon rolls were amazing. The Chicken fried steak was one of the best I have had. The pancakes and french toast was some of the best we have had. Nothing we had was average or bad. It was recommended to come here for breakfast and it did not disappoint. They only take cash so make sure you have cash.

I bet if Peggy and I sat down we could probably find a lot of political common ground. Unfortunately, she prefers political sniping on a chalkboard, offering an ugly message of divisiveness so close to a monument built in the spirit of unity. Food was average, service decent. As noted, they only take cash to save them a 2% credit card fee but are happy to charge you a fee to use the atm.

Let's start with the signs. I won't lie: I lean left. That said, I don't feel the need to throw my politics out everywhere, especially on a sign before you enter as well as a sign by the cash register. You say at the bottom of the sign inside to "be respectful" - that's a two-way street. You should respect your customers diverse views. That's all I will say, but it is the reason for the poor atmosphere score. The food was great. The homemade biscuits were delicious, even though by the time we got there they had run out of gravy for biscuits and gravy. My daughter had the massive cinnamon roll, which was fluffy like white bread. The eggs and ham were good. Overall, food was great. The service too was friendly and paid attention to their guests. They didn't have any politics to espouse on us, it was just friendly discussion and good food. In short: your politics suck, your food and service was good.

Belated review: I ate here for breakfast on July 2, 2013, on my way to Mt. Rushmore. As I was leaving the restaurant, another customer, seated at a table with his wife and another couple, noticed my motorcycle jacket and asked where I was coming from. Somehow, our conversation found its way to what high school I attended. It turns out that his wife went to the same high school as me in Los Angeles, CA, one year ahead of me! They too were riders with BMW sport-touring machines. I'll never forget Peggy's Place for that reason. Oh, I can't remember the details of my eating experience, excpt that it did well with me.

The food was good. I would have given them 5 stars, but the hashbrown had an odd flavor.... not bad, but not good. I am not sure what is up with their rye toast, but the charge $2.95 (I did not order that.). Considering we spent around $40 for breakfast, rye should be included.
John Genovese — Google review
One of the best places for breakfast in the area, the food is really delicious. All the things we ordered were fantastic, really a home made taste
Katerina Demkina — Google review
The food was good here, BUT when I asked for sourdough toast, she said they didn't have that, but they had rye, and I said ok, that would be good. Long story short, they charged me 2.99 for rye toast! No reply from the guy who rang us out when I said the waitress never mentioned an extra charge for Rye and who in the heck charges 2.99 for Rye toast? I should have put my foot down, but I was on vacation and didn't want to argue on that. I won't ever go there again. But they wouldn't care anyway as it mostly tourists and they don't care, it seems. Shameful
