1Cape Soya

Mentioned on
Peninsula
Cape Soya, located in Japan, is a popular destination for travelers. Visitors can take a bus to reach the cape and should be mindful of the limited bus schedule. The area offers stunning views, including the sight of Sakhalin from 43 kilometers away. Tourists can enjoy local cuisine such as "scallop ramen" at the northernmost restaurant and witness picturesque silhouettes of seabirds and islands during the magic hour.
The Northest point of Japan was the reason for my to visit Wakkanai. The place was very nice and beautiful, but it was very cold due to the lower temperature as well as the wind. Cape Soya not only have this statue but the area nearby is also worth seeing such as the old naval watch tower and the new one on the hill opposite the statue of Cape Soya. From the hill you will see the magnificent view of the Northest point of Japan.

One of our best days of travel. From Wakkanai by local bus through a huge snow drift and storm. Lovely for people not used to snow. But to reach Cape Soya was a life time ambition. We stood near the Monument of Japan’s Northernmost Point and watched two beautiful bodies of water namely the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan. And yes we did see in the distance with a lift in the clouds the far away Sakhalin Island in Russia. It does not get much better.

Did a day trip from Sapporo. Was apprehensive about it at first because of the language barrier. Turns out, it wasn't too much of a hassle to get here. Just turn left once you get out of the train entrance/ exit. Walk to the end of the corridor to the bus ticket office. Get the ticket there. Instructions on how to get to Cape Soya are printed on the reverse of the ticket - there's a map and photo of the return bus stop. You'll also be given a time table. Busses here are notoriously on time so just pay attention to the time and you'll be fine. Clear day today - can see Sakhalin on the horizon

I had ``scallop ramen'' at the northernmost part of the restaurant. Thank you very much for your delicious meal. During the magic hour, the silhouettes of seabirds and islands become picturesque. The illuminated ``Monument to the Northernmost Point of Japan'' was also an unforgettable beauty. (Translated by Google) Other reviews say it's beautiful, but I'm not sure. It is a cape located in the northernmost part of Japan, where it is very windy. Perhaps because it is cold and windy, the surrounding vegetation is a bit unique. To get to this place by car or bike using the coastal road, use the Ootsk Line to the east and the Ororon Line to the west. Both paths are spectacular as they run right next to the beach for over 100 kilometers, but the scenery along the Ororon Line in particular is of a scale that makes you feel like you are on the continent rather than Japan. Highly recommend the drive. Historical landmark
The Wakkanai North Breakwater Dome is a unique semi-circular breakwater located just a short walk north of Wakkanai Station. Built between 1931 and 1936, the breakwaters feature a rare semi-arched structure with thick columns, reminiscent of ancient Roman buildings. Despite some ongoing renovation works due to aging, visitors can still enjoy pleasant activities such as walking dogs or playing catch with children in the dome.
Beautiful and quiet place in the North.

A fairly unique landmark. There isn't any activities going on during the winter but in the summer there are. There is a slight path that wasn't covered in snow. This is about a 7 minute walk from the JR Station. There are stairs next to it and that will provide a nice view.

It reminded me of Roman architecture n pillars of Connaught place, Delhi. It’s unique. It was made to protect the port. It’s more or less 450 meters long.

Wakkanai North Breakwater Dome was a stop that I asked my tour driver to make when I toured Wakkanai. The Dome structure is very unique. It reminded me of a coliseum. It is a cultural monument that represents the past when it was used to dock ships from the Sakhalin islands.

Feb. 8th, 2024: Neat structure with a design that resembles the inside of a whale, with each arc serving as a rib. My stop here was brief but worthwhile, and I met a local who was proud to share some commentary about the dome. Can’t say I understood much, but the smile on her face had me believe she loved it. Or, perhaps she had fallen in love with me. We will never know. Not much else to do other than admire the architecture, but sometimes that’s more than enough as it was for me that day.

Wakkanai Park is a stunning location, situated on a hill beside the ocean and boasting a botanical garden, observatory tower and memorial statues. The drive up offers the chance to spot wild deer, while at the top visitors are treated to breathtaking 270-degree views. A monument dedicated to nine courageous women who lost their lives in World War II stands as a poignant reminder of sacrifice and bravery.
If you are lucky on the drive up you might see wild deer, when you get to the top the 270 degree views are spectacular, please stop and read the inscription on the monument dedicated to 9 ladies whom gave their lives during WW2, it’s a sad read but none the less I felt that by reading it paid homage to those very brave ladies.

Cape Noshappu is a popular spot known for its stunning sunset views of the nearby islands, which can be observed from an aquarium and a dolphin monument. The area is situated at the tip where two offshore islands are visible, and while it's usually very windy and cold, visitors can take bus 3 directly from the JR station to reach the location in around 10 minutes.

At first, I thought that this was the northernmost point of Japan. However, it turns out that it was somewhere west. Cape Noshappu is a very windy place but if you time your visit, you will be able to see a beautiful sunset here. There are also numerous deer in the area but they rarely go near the dolphin monument. Feb. 8th, 2024: twas a windy, snowy and cloudy day, and I took a brisk walk to this place from my hotel. It was a powerful place to stand. The well-named Kitamon Shrine, which serves as a fortress that protects the northernmost region, is reached by climbing the stairs at the end of this approach. ・This shrine has a very atmospheric atmosphere, with a large sacred lantern on the side of the road, a stylish curved road, and a guardian dog in front of the stairs. ・If you look back while climbing the stairs, you can see the North Breakwater Dome. It's a nice place. ・There is a second torii gate next to the awarding place. The main shrine is also nearby. Please bow in front of the torii gate and worship. ・It's a somewhat stylish shrine building with bright colors. I happened to be able to capture a moment when there were no people around, but perhaps because it was a long weekend, there was a steady stream of people coming to visit the shrine. ・Below the U-shaped guardian dog, there is also a child guardian dog whose descendants prosper. ・There are bows dedicated to the left and right inside the shrine, giving the impression that the shrine is protecting the northernmost land. ・After visiting the shrine, I received a goshuin stamp at the awarding office. This is said to be the northernmost shrine with a priest, so there were many worshipers, and there were always groups of people waiting to receive their stamps. ・When I visited, there was a Shinto priest handling the request by himself, and although it seemed a little difficult, he carefully wrote it down for me and stamped it with a red seal. I guess there are a lot of visitors who admire the stamp saying it is the northernmost shrine in Japan. The firstfruits fee was 500 yen, so I made an offering. ・A shrine that originates from the northern guard of the Edo Shogunate. Although it is a local shrine, it is quite splendid. In Hokkaido, which doesn't have much history, it's a good idea to visit shrines and imagine what it was like before modernization, and look back on the history of Japan and the efforts of the Japanese people. Upon entering Seafood Izakaya TAKE-chan, I immediately sensed it would be a satisfying place to dine. My intuition proved correct as the food was abundant and remarkably fresh. The crab sashimi left me astonished since it was my first time trying it. The service was top-notch, and the familial atmosphere provided some amusement with playful banter among the staff.

Well catered for tourists, with some English speaking staff. Certainly pricey but the food is good. As per other reviews which mentions queues, we arrived at 18:10 on Friday evening and wrote our name down on a sheet to join the queue. We waited 30 mins. Self-order via a tablet on the table. Food was served quickly. Very friendly service.

This place is popular with the locals and tourists. You'll probably have to wait a bit if you don't book a table in advance. I had the octopus shabu, assorted sashimi and a kelp salad. The ingredients were fresh so everything was good. It may be slightly more expensive than your local dinners but the price is worth the quality of the food. It's probably more expensive to have the same things in the city.

This is the best restaurant in Wakkanai, by a big gap. There was a line up to get in every night with all locals in September 2022, when Japan was still closed, for good reason. The seafood is extremely fresh (they even have their own tanks), the dishes are cooked well, and service is so nice and understanding. Foreigner friendly, they take payment cards, there's even an English menu which I helped upload. Just go -- and I recommend the octopus shabu shabu set menu here for the visitors, it looks like amazing value.

From the moment I peeked into this restaurant I had a feeling it would be a good place to dine and I wasn’t wrong. The food was plentiful and very, very fresh. I was blown away with the crab sashimi-it was my first time eating it. The service was very good and it was a bit of a laugh as this must be a family run business and you could sense the little jibes and digs that they were having at each other. None the less there was an elderly lady that was handling all the cooked seafood and an elderly gentleman who seemed to be the owner was handling the sashimi-both of these people must have decades of experience as they seemed so calm and cool amongst the slight chaos. If you are in Wakkanai go here for dinner you won’t be disappointed. Excellent….

Seafood donburi restaurant
Karafuto Shokudō in Hokkaido is a must-visit for seafood lovers. The restaurant offers a wide variety of incredibly tasty dishes, all centered around the abundant and fresh seafood found in the area. Their specialty seafood bowl is overflowing with creamy uni (sea urchin), salty ikura (salmon roe), buttery hotate (scallops), and flavorful kani (crab).
Possibly one of the best seafood bowls I had in my life. It's in a somewhat hard-to-reach place without a car but it should still be possible. Do note they take their last orders before 14:30 everyday.

- We are TRAVEL YouTubers traveling to see the amazing places in the world 🗺- The sea urchin here was so sweet and so delicious, highly recommended. It comes with little Tsukemono (picked veggies) and miso soup. We ordered the small nama Uni-don which was about ¥2860 but it was very fulfilling and we were very happy with everything. It’s a little expensive but you will get a very delicious fresh urchin so highly recommended here. We visited on a Saturday at the end of July and we got in right before 12pm and we were the only customers there. They don’t have air conditioning but they have fans.

Delicious and fresh seafood in Hokkaido is plentiful. Karafuto Shokudo offers a wide variety of amazingly tasty dishes, all focused around the seafood found in these waters. This remains probably the best seafood bowl I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing, with layers of creamy uni (sea urchin), salty ikura (salmon roe), buttery hotate (scallops), and flavorful kani (crab). The bowl was literally overfilling with rich goodness and the freshness could not be better. While I could go on describing the deliciousness of any of the four, especially the buttery hotate, the uni brought tears of joy in my eyes. A friend of mine once told me you could easily judge a sushi/sashimi restaurant by the quality of their uni, as it doesn't stay fresh, can't be maintained through chilling for long, and can't be frozen, so the taste or texture quickly changes. Here was the epitome of that example; I have never tasted more rich and creamy uni than I had here. For those that turn away at the idea of eating it due to the texture or metallic taste, you probably have never had fresh Hokkaido uni. A bit pricey, but well worth the price.

Most delicious sea urchin i have ever ate in Japan. Except the location is a bit far, other things is perfect.

Ramen restaurant
Aoitori is a small local restaurant located in the northern part of Japan, offering delicious ramen with a simple yet flavorful menu. The shio ramen features a highly transparent soup with green onions, char siu, and menma as its main ingredients. The kelp-based soup stock gives the soup a rich flavor that warms both the body and mind.
Small local restaurant with englisch translation of menu. What more do you want? Ramen was really delicous! Mine was salt noodles with roasted pork fillet. I guess you could speak englisch to them but I didn´t want to be that type of tourist so I prepared a simple japanese phrase and voila my ramen was served.

(Translated by Google) I had shio ramen in the farthest part of the north. The soup is highly transparent, and the ingredients are simple with green onions, char siu, and menma. The soup that you can feel the kelp soup stock has a firmer impression than it looks. The old-fashioned ramen warmed my mind and body.
