Rishiri Island is a picturesque destination in Japan that boasts breathtaking coastal vistas, an inactive volcano, snowy landscapes during winter months, and exhilarating hiking trails. Unlike other popular tourist spots in the country, Rishiri Island remains relatively undiscovered by visitors, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a peaceful getaway. The island features many bike-friendly paths that are both convenient and scenic. The highlight of the region is Mount Rishiri which offers a challenging climb with rewarding views at its peak.
Beautiful island. There's a lot of cycling road which is really convenient. The main attraction is climbing Mt Rishiri.

Beautiful island, perfect for cycling. Scenic and idylic.

We camped at the base of Mt. Rishirifuji. The camp site has a common area with wifi. The washrooms are clean and equipped with washlets and heated seats. The camp site however doesn't provide rental items. There are also wooden cabins for rent that come equipped with futon. There is enough parking space near the camping site.

Mount Rishiri is an island volcano located off the coast of Hokkaido. It boasts a challenging climbing route with a summit shrine, covering 1700m in 5km. Erosion near the top can be difficult to navigate, but the local community is taking measures to mitigate its effects on walkers. The hike offers stunning panoramic views and can be accomplished in one day if you are physically fit enough.
The ascent to the summit of Mt Rishiri is one of the most spectacular hikes in all of Hokkaido. The views from the top are absolutely stunning, that is if you are lucky and the sky is clear. To get there is a rough and steep hike, first through forest, later through shrubs and ravines. The ascent is about 1,500 meters of altitude and it took us 3,5 hours to get up there from the trail head. From the top, you can see Rebun island, Hokkaido mainland, and even the Sakhalin islands. But the best views are down the slopes at the wild volcanic landscapes of Rishiri. At the summit, the temperature was around 10 degrees celsius in mid-July, so we had a quick lunch break before descending. We took it slowly on the way down, so the overall hiking time with breaks was about 7 hours. The trailhead can be reached from the ferry terminal in about 10 minutes by car. Your local accommodation will likely be able to arrange transportation. Note that there are no toilets along the trail, so better bring disposable single use toilets. They are sold at convenience stores in Rishiri township.

The climb is a bit tough, 1700m in a day over 5km! Erosion is a major challenge near the summit, but the local community is doing a great job in mitigating the effects of the hordes of walkers walking up to the summit.

Great hike with panoramic views. Doable in 1 day but will need to be in shape. Make sure you take a bath in the hot spring if you plan to stay on the island.

I nearly fell (1203 ft) because I tripped one a stone. Clinging on to life, I barely survived. Soon after 1 hour when I bandaged all my injuries, I noticed I was lost. It took me 3 hours to find the nearest town. This is one of my most dramatic experiences.

I have climbed this mountain two years in a row, and I definitely recommend it! The hike is a little bit hard, especially for beginners, but definitely do-able and worth the gorgeous views (I absolutely love the views of clouds from higher up on the mountain!!!). I recommend only climbing the mountain on days when it is not too wet, as a muddy trail is not fun or very safe to climb. Bring a headlamp if you plan to try to reach the summit the morning you arrive, as you will need it later on the way down. It takes longer to go down stony areas and tramp through the forest when it is pitch black. But the sunset view from halfway up the mountain is amazing!!!! I have both tried spending the night at Rishiri, and climbing first thing the next morning(5 am), and also taking the earliest ferry and climbing the same day I arrive(9am). I recommend both ways. :)

Rishiri Rebun Sarobetsu National Park is a remote area that boasts volcanic mountains, high meadows and various species of alpine plants. It is home to a magnificent marshland that cannot be found on the mainland, and visitors can learn about its history at the park's center. The park offers different experiences depending on the season, making it worth visiting year-round.
An amazing national park in such a remote part of Japan. I have visited both Rishiri and Rebun islands, and both are highly recommended. Although most say to visit in the summer, I visited in November and there were no crowds. Overall a must visit to both locations.

Totally worth a visit if you are in Wakkanai. I was only going to Wakkanai to see Cape Soya but thanks to a friendly passenger on the train ride over from Sapporo, I learned all about this island. He got super excited about Mt. Rishiri in the distance as we approached Wakkanai Station. I thought nothing of it until he pointed to a map he was carrying that explained it’s a volcano. I was just at Sakurajima the week before, and the idea of having seen one of the southern most volcanoes in Japan, why not see the Northern most volcano. I arrived at 12:50pm, checked in and quickly ran to the Heartland Ferry Terminal, and with only 10mins to spare, I was on the last ride to Rishiri. Keep in mind the ferry takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, one way. So it only runs a limited number of times a day. In the winter, it’s 1:55pm last ride to the island. And 5:30pm last trip back from the island. The ferry ride was awesome, highly recommend chilling on the outdoor deck, no one out there, not cold at all. Nice privacy. S As we approached Rishiri, its snow covered peak looked sharp and mighty. As we prepared for docking, you get a sweet view of the mountain, totally unobstructed. Sadly, unlike Sakurajima, no taxi’s were waiting for us. Despite that, I wandered around a bit on foot, but because I had a return ticket for 5:30pm, I had to hang around and not go too far. Little town near the dock. There is a cool cliffside as well, wish I had more time to explore. Go, have fun, you will like. Maybe more so in the spring and fall 😅

【前の訪問地】礼文島観光 【次の訪問地】食堂「よしおか」(稚内) (Translated by Google) 2023.07 Monday / Rishiri Island Sightseeing (Hokkaido North-South Trip) [Required time] 3 hours [Cost] 3,300 yen/person. Soya Bus Rishiri 23 Year B Great Nature Tour of Rishiri [Impression] I applied from a site called "Hassha All Right Net". In the morning, sightseeing in Rebun Island takes about 40 minutes from Kafuka FT to Kutsugata FT, which is only open in summer. Again, the 2nd class seats were packed with major tour passengers! However, the boat was comfortable in Amapola Soya, so when I saw Mt. Rishirifuji on the deck, I got there immediately. The sightseeing route is Kutsugata Ferry Terminal - Kamuikaigan Park - Senboshi Misaki Park - Otatomari Marsh - Rishiricho Folk Museum (6/1 - 7/31 only) - Oshidomari Ferry Terminal. In Oshidomari, I had 45 minutes before departure, so I took pictures of the tourist information center, nearby souvenir shops, and Mt. Rishirifuji. If I had a little more time, I would have liked to go hiking to the Cape Peshi Observation Deck, but I enjoyed just looking at it from afar. The bus was a normal sightseeing bus, not a double decker. Rishiri's guide didn't stop at sightseeing spots to explain. The first is Kamui Kaigan Park. When you get on board, you will be handed a leaflet with a 500 yen discount on sea urchin peeling at Kamui Kaigan Park. My family can't eat "sea urchin", so we skipped it, but many people participated. Rishiri is a volcanic island. The lava coast was impressive. Next, we visited the trip from the train window to see “Human Face Rock,” “Nekuma Rock,” “Kita no Itsukushima Bentengu Shrine,” and Sanrenso. A video is better than a camera. Last but not least, you should sit on the right side of the Rishiri bus this season. Because it makes one lap counterclockwise, there are more highlights on the right side. The next sightseeing spot is Senboshi Misaki Park. There is a nature observation area like a "fish tank" in the park, and seals are also kept. It's just that, but you can observe the sea creatures, so it's like a natural aquarium. There are shops run by fishermen along the way. (They also sell seal food.) There is also a souvenir shop on the other side of the road. The "instant kombu ramen" I bought here is the cheapest you can buy anywhere, even in Nagoya. Next is Otatomari Marsh. It is a large swamp surrounded by primeval forests of Yezo pine. You can also walk around. I had time to spare, so I walked, but the impression is subtle. . . Well, it became a memorial. At the restaurant, Kumazasa tea and Hamanasu soft serve (400 yen) were delicious! Lastly, the Rishiri Town Local Museum. I was surprised to learn that people have been living here since the Paleolithic era. The set of 5 picture postcards I received as a commemoration of boarding the sightseeing bus will remain in my memory. [Previous visit] Sightseeing in Rebun Island [Next stop] Restaurant “Yoshioka” (Wakkanai)
