Barbecue restaurant
The trendy and rustic Union Woodshop in downtown Clarkson, Michigan is a popular destination for food enthusiasts. This historic restaurant attracts crowds with its slow-smoked BBQ, wood-fired pizza, and selection of craft beers. The bar is conveniently situated on the right side upon entering, while the open wood fire grill takes center stage. Customers appreciate the option to sit away from the bar area for a more tranquil dining experience. The service at Union Woodshop is prompt and reliable.
I’ve been going to the Woodshop for 10+ years. It’s always been a satisfying experience every visit and I look forward to coming back each visit. I ordered the Main with Brisket, mac’n cheese, and sweet Potato mash. Just as good as my last visits. I hope Union restaurants continue to stay away from being “corporatized” and continue what they are doing forever.

The place has an interesting layout.   It has an only digital menu for main food.  The desert menu is by mouth only.  The upstairs bar has drinks of its own and can not order most food.   You saw clear lines in the establishment. The main area is a darker ambience.  One of the biggest complaints with the design was that it was hot in the place. By the time I left, It was cooler outside than within the building.   It was 72 outside. Service for the most part sucked.    There were times at the bar that you were completely ignored.  If the person did not like you, he would not explain the sauces or anything. Except for the desert, the speed of the food was slow for a restaurant. The Drink was amazing.   It was overpriced for what you got.    For the warmth within the building, I am not sure if it was worth it. For the length of time this place has been open,  You would think bottles of the sauces would be a better  presentation. It looked horrible.   The Korean sauce seemed interesting but the ingredients got stuck in the nozzle so I could only taste Little.   Of the other sauces, The Raleigh and  Decatur  were the best. Rest of the sauces were nothing special. I will say I never tried the hell. As for the food,  It was a hit or miss.  For the Main dish, I tried Woodshop 101. The brisket was amazing..  The sweet potato side was great.   The chicken was simple okay.  The roll and sweet butter was good.   The ribs were more tear instead of pulling off the bone  texture.   They needed help for the sauces and had dry spots.    The collared greens had some taste.  I could never see or taste the “bacon” anywhere. For the quality and amount of food, it was overpriced.     The Desert was decent.  It was decently priced for a restaurant . I have been to the WoodShop many years ago and remembered it..  I will say it has gone downhill.  At this time with all the negatives, I would pass going again

Superb! First, I want to say that our server, Ryan, was perfect. He was gracious and polite and provided us with just the right amount of service. And our meal, there is so much to say, so I'll keep it short. Everything was delicious, the coleslaw was crisp and not drowning in dressing, and the thick slices of homemade bread were the best. I haven't had mac and cheese this good ever. The potato salad had scrumptious bits of fresh bacon and was not overly sweet. The ribs? Well go there, taste for yourself, and enjoy!

We recently hosted our wedding at the Shop Shop, and it was an unforgettable experience! From the moment we approached the Union Joint catering staff on Oct 31 for our December 31 wedding, we were met with exceptional service. Chris, in particular, went above and beyond to ensure every detail was perfect. On the big day, the staff, including Jamie, Liv, and Rhonda, were incredibly professional and attentive, impressing not only us but all of our guests. The food was outstanding, and our guests couldn't stop raving about it. Our special day was truly magical, thanks to the wonderful team at the Shop Shop. Thank you for making our wedding day unforgettable!

Another great restaurant in the union family. The wings here are amazing as well as the pulled pork! And the location is so nice, with all the other restaurants in the same little strip.

Union woodshop was an excellent location for our 50th wedding anniversary party. Setting up the contract for renting the space and ordering food through the online portal was easy and very efficient. Christina and Hannah were always available to answer any questions. Venue is super cute and food was outstanding. Vegan options are available.

Pros: Ribs - I prefer St. Louis style but these baby back ribs were tasty. Pickles - Meats are a-la-carte and come with pickles and coleslaw on the side. Pickles are refreshing and crisp. A great addition to the meat. Mac & Cheese - REALLY GREAT. LOVED this dish. Highly recommend. Creamy, crunchy cheese top. Baked to perfection TN BBQ Sauce. The best out of their sauce offerings. Atmosphere - Great decor and vibe. Cons: Beef brisket - no very tender & juicy. The flat did not pull apart easy and it lacked a good smoke flavor. Corn muffin - it was ok. Not fantastic. Just kinda meh. Summary. Not a bad BBQ spot. I wasn’t blown away by the BBQ but it was a pleasant experience. I think everyone should give it a try at least once.

The famous (locally) woodshop. An all around good restaurant. The Mac & Cheese is well known, but other less known good dishes are the smoked chicken and wood sticks. They also have many great craft cocktails. The only downside is the higher price.

Another great meal. Great environment and food and more Great Michigan service. A constant smile and helpful service. The beer just as amazing. We always enjoy it here and will be back soon.

Service was fast my mother and I went here for her 60th birthday. We both ordered the brisket which was very good a lil dry but was good the sweet potato mash were delicious and so were the baked beans

Great food in a laid-back atmosphere. Hell sauce has great flavor but is not overly hot. I had pulled chicken and baked beans. Chicken and beans were excellent, with the beans having a lot of spice, so beware.

A lot of people here so it must be okay. However one particular server needs to no longer be a server. The food probably would have been okay if he had managed to get anything there remotely warm. The whole experience was a nightmare. I tried to find a manager but that was pointless. Their are so many places to better spend your money. Don't waste your time. If our last experience is typical of this place steer clear. Mediocre food and absolutely The most disrespectful and horrible service.

First time ever here. I will surely be going back again. The food is phenominal. Pulled pork is perfect. The sauces are perfect variety to choose from. The waitress was amazing at helping me choose what to get. She said the mac and cheese was good. It was 10 out of 10.

We’ve been coming here for so many years and it’s always been amazing BBQ. We stopped coming for a few months and finally decided to return. We were surprised to see the quality go down. We were so bummed out. It almost feels like there’s new owners now and the soul of the food has suffered. We asked if there was new ownership and they told us they were just streamlining the menu. The corn bread muffins are different…They no longer have the green bean casserole side dish. All the sides dishes are super tiny now. All the smoked meats have a bland taste and not served hot. It seemed like the meats have been sitting around at room temperature for a while. I really hope I’m wrong and things get better. I wish them all the best.

I am emotioanl writing this. The Union Woodshop was absolutely one of the best places we have eaten and will go back again and again. My husband is a 100% disabled veteran and has an ADA licensed service dog. We have been illegal discriminated against with the service dog at various public places. The Union Woodshop was 100% in compliant and every single staff member was trained and completely ignored the seevice dog and made the meal better than we could have imagined. We drove 25 mins from one bad restaurant just to come back to the Union woodshop and I thanked the manager for the amazing restaurant, food, and staff that has us feeling comfortable and welcome!

We came in on a Thursday night. Our party of 3 got right in and our sever, Jay came right over. He was friendly and engaging and very familiar with the menu. We ordered the pulled pork, brisket and the sweet potato burrito. Max b cheese and tater tots were our sides of choice. The food came out just as we ordered. Hott fresh and tasty. If bbq is your thing, you’ll find a variety of sauces on the table. All in all a good experience! Will definitely come back!
Sport Mom — Google review
This was honestly the best meal out I've had in ages. I had the pulled pork burrito with the Korean BBQ sauce. It was a nice balance of sweat and heat and even some crunch from onions. We had the brownie pot pie for dessert and it was amazing. I really enjoyed being able to lounge upstairs while we waited on our table.

The prices have went up since switching to A Le Carte style menu, bill was 100$ for just my husband and I but the food was AMAZING! The ribs, greens and Mac n cheese is my FAV. I wish they had a combo style menu to help with the cost like before.

Clarkston Union Bar & Kitchen, an American eatery in Clarkston, offers delectable handcrafted American cuisine and a variety of craft beers. This charming restaurant boasts wooden tables and vintage church pews for seating, creating a cozy ambiance. Housed in a repurposed church building that relocated to a new area, it has become one of the top dining establishments in Clarkson, MI.
Great waitress! So friendly and helpful 🙂 Gave us great suggestions. I loved the windows and deco. You sit in church pews, and it has a huge bar.

Wonderful atmosphere to share a meal with friends and family. Super dry pizza appetizer wasn't my favorite. I had the special for the evening, it had a lot of flavor, but a bit too much sodium. (pork chop) Prices are about where they should be for inflation and a great space with great service. A bit disappointed the wine I ordered wasn't available and I was not told, rather just given a different wine.

A visit to The Union in Clarkston is not just a meal; it's an experience that engages all the senses from the moment you walk in. Set in a beautifully converted old church, the ambiance resonates with an understated charm, an effortless blend of history and contemporary touches. To start, the **Mediterranean Dip** was a revelation. Its perfect texture paired with the harmonious blend of flavors creates an appetizing introduction to what's in store. It's the kind of dish that sets the tone for the rest of the evening, and The Union certainly did not disappoint. The **Chicken Pot Pie** was a comforting symphony of flavors and textures. It was clear that meticulous care went into perfecting this dish. With a flaky crust that melted in the mouth and a hearty filling that warmed the soul, it was the epitome of comfort food taken to the next level. But the true standout of the evening was the **Meatloaf**. To describe it as 'beyond great' feels almost like an understatement. It was a masterclass in how a classic dish can be elevated to gourmet status. Every bite was a journey of flavors that was both nostalgic and refreshingly new. The staff's attentive service further enhanced the overall experience, ensuring that we were well taken care of throughout our meal. In conclusion, The Union is more than just a restaurant; it's a culinary landmark in Clarkston. The blend of exquisite dishes, an atmosphere steeped in history, and top-notch service makes it a must-visit. I eagerly anticipate my next visit to relive and uncover more culinary wonders.

As a former resident of Clarkston, I've waited over 8 years to experience the most amazing mac 'n cheese on planet earth again! Seriously, in my 70 years I've NEVER had better! Kurt, just as good as I remember! Well done one & all!

Haven't been here in roughly 12-18 months, and definitely won't be back! Used to have awesome menu and decent portions. Today I received a Reuben with exactly 3 slices of grilled, dry corned beef for $20. Turkey sandwich was also just as skimpy. Best thing about our experience was our friendly server. Would not recommend under any circumstances!!

Came for brunch and it was absolutely delicious. Biscuits and gravy, french toast, breakfast burrito, pulled pork and eggs, heuvos ranchero were some of the items we ordered.

Great location, service and theme inside. However very disappointed in the lobster Mac and cheese... Either they forgot to add lobster or it's in tiny invisible pieces either way was not worth the money. Pot pie could also use more veggies and some seasoning or salt and pepper. Perhaps it's because we arrived at 8:45pm and the kitchen closes at 10pm. It's a bummer food was not to par.

Clarkston Union is a place we look forward to visiting and every time we do, we are in love with it all over again. The balsamic dressing…so darn good. This visit I had Hungarian goulash over noodles and my husband had pork. Let’s just say that these plates were clean when we gave them back…obviously a bone was left but we ate it all!!

Very cool joint in Clarkston, and yes the Mac and cheese is as good as everyone says it is! I also loved the state fair lemonade cocktail. The friend I dined with enjoyed the pot pie and mashed potatoes as well as her pom martini. Would definitely go back!

We took our friends from Canada to the Clarkston Union Bar and Kitchen for lunch. The food was exceptional. I ordered the Turkey burger and vegetarian chili. Both dishes were delicious. Our friends ordered the burger and grilled cheese. I have never had a bad meal from this restaurant. My only complaint is the noise/volume can get rather high so it makes it difficult to hear, but there is outside seating. The Clarkston Union Bar & Kitchen is definitely a favourite of ours and a place we plan to come back and visit.

It was my first time dining at Clarkston Union and what a unique atmosphere. All the old and original church pews were amazing! Our server was super friendly and efficient. I ordered the special of Fall Harvest Salad and it was delicious. My sister ordered the special of Hot Turkey Sandwich with Mashed Sweet Potatoes, which was also very tasty 😊

I have truthfully not been here in quite sometime but I have such a positive memory from the last time I ate here. We had 2 of the specials today. One with shrimp and other with orzo and eggplant. They were both excellent! This was our 1st time here. We will definitely be visiting again.
Beth Marshall — Google review
Cool place. Excellent beer selection. Nice atmosphere and decent food. You'd expect the mac and cheese to be better with how much they oversell it, but it's oily. It's not bad, it's just not as good as they'd have you believe. My lobster mac and cheese had three slivers of lobster in it total. Entree size lobster mac and cheese is the same size as the regular mac and cheese side dish. The men's room seriously needs to be remodeled. It's old as hell and even though clean, looks nasty. Wish I had gone to Honcho again instead of here. The Union did a much better job with that place. The servers are fantastic, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu and beers.

Kruse's Deer Lake Inn is an American eatery with a cozy, countryside ambiance that specializes in seafood and warm bread. Patrons can enjoy their meals while seated by the windows in the lively bar area. Although it tends to get noisy during peak hours, it quietens down later in the evening. The attentive and friendly server offers excellent recommendations for delectable dishes like the flavorful calamari and the mouthwatering Seafood Panroast with its savory notes.
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary and we couldn't have picked a better place! Loved the menu selections. They had a great variety of seasonal dishes and cocktails! We had the pleasure of being served by Mike the bartender who has a great sense of humor. Very enjoyable evening. I highly recommend the Deer Lake Inn!

Been here many times and can't believe I've never left a review because I have a fabulous experience every time! Tonight was no exception. Kids went through 3 bags of bread. So good. Calamari was delicious appetizer. Our waitress offered to make sauces on the side (yes pls for the kids). Crab cakes with mustard aoili was awesome dinner, complete with tasty bean salad and rice pilaf. Highly recommend. First time for a mocktail here...had the blueberry gin. Was just meh. But I'd try the mule next time. Parking is a bear (even with two lots) so just allow for time and be prepared for a wait some nights.

Had our Anniversary dinner here after driving past many times wanting to try it out. Seated at windows in front bar area. VERY LOUD/busy between 6:30-7 on a Friday. Quieted down after that. Very friendly, knowledgeable server gave great food recommendations. Tasty calamari. Seafood Panroast was AMAZING if you like salty/savory. Blackened salmon with siesta key sauce was equally amazing. Michigan berry salad was a pleasant summer side. Was not happy with my house Pinot Noir, but they happily replaced it. Chocolate mousse topped it all off - delicious! Small outdoor patio option with several tables exists out back.
Lina Rigney — Google review
The menu is diverse and changes over time. Five of us dined there and everyone was very pleased with their selection. The bread served before ordering was delicious as were my crab cakes. Prices and serving sizes are reasonable. Our waitress was very thoughtful and prompt. I tend to lean toward regional cuisine but Deer Lake Inn has a wide variety of great tasting food.
Kurt Zaiser — Google review
Kruse’s Deer Lake Inn has become my favorite restaurant in the area. They have some unique flavors (such as their current harvest salad that has candied pecans, apples, bacon, goat cheese, and a bacon vinegarette which sounds questionable, but is quite delicious). And everything on the menu is great and they have a great variety of dishes depending on what I’m feeling like (ribs, parmesan encrusted flounder, fish and chips, blackened chicken wrap, tortellini pasta with chicken and palomino sauce). They always have a good desert on the menu too (the four berry crisp is my favorite, and right now it’s apple crisp). Service has been downright amazing every single time I’ve been there, and management has been exceptional too.
Kristopher Schermerhorn — Google review
An incredible little place you may drive right by if not actively looking for it. The staff were very kind, welcoming, and accommodating as soon as we walked in. There was always someone, whether a waiter or manager, bustling and circling around the dining rooms just scanning tables and consistently making sure everyone had what they needed. When we came in the place was practically empty, but within an hour it became packed as you see in the images, but it didn't seem to phase the staff. They hustled, their communication was outstanding, they maintained good humor, and rocked a busy lunch service. Their manager was a stellar coordinator/director, jumping in wherever he was needed and multitasking impressively. The kitchen staff powered briskly through the service pumping out high quality dishes like a well-oiled machine. The waitress made great recommendations and almost every dish I tried was stellar - I highly recommend Jack Beard's Fish Chowder while it's on the menu and the Seafood Panroast. The creme brulee was alright. Still, do not pass this place up if hunger strikes - you are getting a beautiful experience at a fair price.

Went here for takeout. Normally everything is good but we waited an extra 45 minutes after given time because the cook forgot to throw on some of the food. The takeout people were at least apologetic and polite. Not the issue but definitely worth mentioning. I’m not sure that the fish was completely cooked or something was wrong with maybe the pizza because it’s currently 4am and I’ve been sick the last 4 hours puking. It’s 100 percent this food because it’s all I ate besides eggs in the morning. They forgot the fish and I’m assuming maybe pulled it early to rush it out but definitely not happy after waiting an extra 45 minutes just to get this sick. I can’t even keep water down at this point nor can I work in 3 hours. Definitely an awful experience from beginning to end. I regret not leaving after having to wait almost an hour. I have never been this sick from food.

Went here for a very late night dinner. Most everyplace nearby was either going to close or already closed. Although the outside sign says open 24 hrs, it is not. Kitchen closes as 10pm. Had the turkey and dressing dinner. It came with soup or salad (chose a salad) and mashed potatoes. I asked for dark gravy. Lol. The gravy came in a bowl, the size of a soup bowl. Crazy! 😜 My salad has so much water in the bottom of the plate had to ask for another salad without the water. The 2nd salad was acceptable. Took home most of my meal home and was better as leftovers. My guest had the cod dinner with rice pilaf. He said his dinner was good. Trendy interior. Nice. I would come here again out of necessity for a late night dinner if most places were closed.

Great place. Love the atmosphere. Service is fantastic. Refills on drinks without even being prompted. The menu is massive, and I have a hard time choosing each time I come here. The portions are generous. You won't be disappointed. We stop in for quick bites, and the wait times are very fair. Vegetarian options and kid friendly. My ONLY complaint is to please do something about the restrooms. They definitely need some attention. Kinda ehhh, skeeved me out a bit. Other than that, I love this place!

Haven't been here for a couple years and I used to really like their food. However I've ordered takeout twice in the last 6 months and each time it was not very good. One time I called up to let the manager know, simply because I felt like the boiled egg in my salad might be spoiled. But the man who I spoke with, I think his name was Alfred, was rather rude and accused me of trying to "get something". He kept asking me what I wanted and I was trying to tell him all I wanted to do was let him know to check the boiled eggs. Then he told me that he didn't believe I could be right because they were all cooked at the same time and if one was bad they would have all been bad. Wow, really?? He was actually rude and so insistent on trying to get an ulterior motive out of me that he wouldn't stop talking long enough for me to say much so I hung up. But I gave it one more shot this last week and took my sister there for Sunday dinner. Too bad, once again not impressed. I ordered chicken parmesan. The chicken was okay, rather heavily breaded. But the spaghetti sauce tasted like it came right out of a can, and it also had a metallic taste or maybe slightly scorched? I don't know, it wasn't horrible enough to complain to the waitress but it wasn't really good either. Just kind of poor diner food. I think their menu is too big and they try too hard to do too many different things. The portions are plentiful but too bad that doesn't help. Service is always good though.

Loved it! We decided to try something new in the area and had heard great things about this place and it did not disappoint! We were seated quickly and same with taking our orders. Delicious food. Very well priced. The exact atmosphere you'd expect out of a diner. This was our first time stopping in but from the conversations happening, most people are regulars. What a great place for brews and food! Had a concert to attend and this place did not lack for a great dinner. The sliders with the onion jam - super delish and packed with flavor. The fries were so crispy! My husband loves the cheese steak, that thing is huge! Great portion and the meat was super tender. My general Zach's (I think that's the name of it) pizza was phenomenal. Great sauce, great toppings. All in all a great meal. Husband loved their pineapple cider as well.

You may have to use the flashlight on your phone depending on the area that you're sitting in low lighting, but I like it that way. The employees and staff were just wonderful. I was there for my birthday we did not tell any of the workers but our server overheard our conversation and he brought me their birthday special dessert. Looking forward to going back soon.

Absolutely loved this place! I wish I could give more stars. The service was great, the beers were tasteful, and the food was delicious! I had the grilled salmon, and my mom had the breaded chicken with bacon and scallions. The staff was constantly moving to keep everything running smoothly for their customers (expo runners and bussers were awesome). They had rooms for bigger parties, you could sit in main dining area or outside patio. And the bathrooms were very clean and unique. I'm definitely coming back!

First time we had been there in 2 years. Covid and all. They was a 50 minute wait because the place was packed. Found a couple of seats at the bar and had drinks while we waited. Good cocktail selection and the red and IPA beers we had were good. Service was a bit slow because of lack of employees I assume. Beef stroganoff, jam burger, and pizza were all good.

On Saturday, July 29 we had our daughters bridal shower at the hilltop. The venue is so pretty inside, and it was nice that we had our own separate area with curtains that closed off our room. Being the brides mom, and planning this special event, it was absolutely the best experience. I worked exclusively with Kara, the event coordinator, and she was a delight and extremely thorough. She was so easygoing and I was 100% confident that the event was going to be a huge success. Our waitress, Lorraine, was phenomenal. She was attentive to everyone, was so pleasant and mingled with the crowd nicely. We had the brunch menu, and the food was incredible! I received lots of compliments on the food - how delicious it was and what a great variety. I was able to actually sit and relax and enjoy my meal and chat and not have worry about anything. It was the best feeling ever. I highly recommend hilltop for a shower or any special event you may have. Thanks Hilltop! Sue McKean

Food wasn’t warm. The beef stroganoff tasted reheated. The chicken tenders were slimy and the breading fell off. We have been here before and had a great meal. We had 4 meals and not one person was happy with what they received.

I love this place for the broiled cod! The tarter and slaw are spot on!!! They hand batter the cod if you order it fried. So good! Ribs are amazing. Not smoked-not boiled so texture and flavor is delish. The ribeye, well it’s just ok. Too thin to get a med-rare and is just choice steak so it eats rather tough for a ribeye. Green beans are always fresh. Steak tips are a must. Chips and cheese with salsa is okay. Cheese sauce is nothing to talk about. Fettuccine Alfredo with blackened chicken was pretty good. Pizza pierogies are yummy !Mac & cheese is pretty good. Everything here is homemade. Everybody can find something on this menu. Staff is friendly. Atmosphere is so cool. Michigan rock artists are hand painted and displayed pool tables and shuffle board too! We usually eat here about once a week. I do wish they had a better quality ribeye steak, even if they charge to make it a larger portion and make it prime. It’s not easy to find a really good steak out there.

Beautiful location, great drinks and food. I attended a wedding shower here. We had the event space reserved.

Nice place. Slightly more pricey than others. Large open spaces, comfy booths. Good food. Nice large game area while you wait for your table/food. 1 pool table, 3, (14'?), shuffleboard tables and 2 other, small tables with bumpers?? A bit on the "dim" side as far as lighting. Enjoyable overall 👍. Closes @ 11 pm on Saturday night.... Maybe see you there!

I've been to Hilltop numerous times, and I cannot speak more highly of this place. The food is excellent, they have a varied menu with frequent changes in specials. Great service, nice atmosphere. Not the best place to watch sports, but they do have some TVs around the bar. Also a bit pricey, but the food is worth the price.

$16 for a salad that is missing half the ingredients. They constantly screw up your order if you get carry out. I've given them chance after chance. They used to be really good. Corn chowder has turned into corn water. Three times now the ranch had been spoiled. Today with the dusting of candied crumbs. Just don't bother wasting your money.

We’re local and don’t get up here too much, but wanted to share because we had a great evening. Stopped up for dinner for our anniversary, just to do something laid back and out of the house. Our server, Jackie, was such a delight. She offered great recommendations, and was fun to chat with. Just a super friendly person who took the time, which is extremely rare these days. We don’t go out much and part of that is because we’re disappointed with service. Not here! Food was awesome too! We look forward to coming up more often for a lighter snack and a few brews. :)
