Yugawara-machi

Yugawara is a town in south-central Japan. It’s known for its natural hot springs and traditional ryokan inns. Makuyama Park has thousands of plum trees, which blossom in spring. Fudo and Godan waterfalls tumble over rocks in the surrounding mountains. Shitodo Cave is decorated with statues of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. Trails lead through forest on the Manazuru Peninsula to Mitsuishi, a formation of three rocks.

It's a complex theme called Living National Treasures, so if you're not interested in it, you might not enjoy it much, but if you're interested in it, it's irresistible. There is a wide range of ceramic works from Shoji Hamada, Tatsuzo Shimaoka, Rosanjin Kitaoji to former Prime Minister Hosokawa, and we also carry works by living national treasures, as well as masterpieces outside of the theme such as Bernard Buffet and Rouault, so you can have a very exciting time. I did. Above all, I was able to enjoy tea with works by Living National Treasures, so I was really happy to be able to enjoy something like this for just 1,000 yen. While visiting Nebukawa for lunch, I searched for reviews and visited. The admission fee is 1,000 yen for adults, which includes the service of enjoying matcha tea in a tea utensil made by a living national treasure. It's a small 4-story building with a parking lot in the back. Purchase a ticket at the entrance and take the elevator to the 4th floor. Look around the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd floors, then go to the 1st floor. Choose your tea utensils and prepare your matcha. I don't know much about art, so I can't say much about it, but there are works by the living national treasures I heard about at the appraisal group, such as Yumeji Takehisa, Shiko Munakata, and Rosanjin, among others. It will be irresistible for lovers of pottery and painting. Bakery
The charming and delightful Bread&Circus bakery has gained immense popularity due to its small size yet extensive range of delectable offerings. Unfortunately, the absence of a reservation system often results in long queues, making it uncertain whether one should endure a 50-minute wait or explore the surrounding sights while visiting this quaint weekend getaway spot.
Crowded and a short line outside but I didn't wait more than five minutes. They seem to be aware of their slowness - the clerk who helped me nudged the other person to work faster "people are waiting." The candied ginger scone was really delicious as was the hamantasch.
Selena Hoy — Google review
People are choosing bread as if choosing a partner for life: takes ages for some to pick up a piece of cake. That, along with time for the staff to pack every small cake, creates queue. While bread is tasty (the shop has been a winner in Japan for 4 years in a row), one must be prepared to invest not only money, but his/her time to be able to buy it. By the time you get the chance to get into the shop, not much might be left to buy.

Tiny nice bakery with lots of selection. For some reason this has become very famous and usually there is a long wait. This place obviously does not take reservations, so if you are here for a quick weekend getaway, I am not sure if you want spend waiting 50 minutes, or spend your time sightseeing while you are here.

Really great choice of bread with various flours and style. Could use less plastic to pack. When some people buy 20 small variety breads, it takes a lot of plastic and a lot of time to pack everything... Expect to wait a lot outside.

The small shop gets busy, but I was lucky to arrive in between crowds. I loved the breads here! I bought a brownie, a scone, and a roll. The brownie was decadent and rich without being overly sweet or fudgey, perfect with a glass of milk. The scone was nice and english, which is a rare thing to find in Japan, and even more so around these parts! It's not that far a walk from wherever you'll be (Yugawara is a small town) so I definitely recommend dropping by!

Yugawaramanyo Park is a charming green area near Tokyo that features a stream, waterfall, and foot spas with unique designs and temperatures. Visitors can reach the park via Tokaido Line and explore various natural sites such as forests, waterfalls, and wildlife. Additionally, during the right season, fireflies can be spotted in the park. A Tanuki shrine is also located nearby along with a foot onsen for those seeking relaxation (300yen per person).
If u happen to be a tourist around Tokyo, and have time to kill, go book urself an onsen resort in Yugawara. U can get there via Tokaido Line. Once in Yugawara, by city bus, u can get around different places, including Yugawaramanyo park. Yugawaramanyo Park is filled with various sites to see. Natural life, forest, waterfall, etc... U might even get to see fireflies if come at the right season. There's is also a cute little Tanuki shrine (with a touching story if can read Japanese). Closeby is a foot onsen (300yen per person) if u like some relaxation too. Highly recommended if u like nature. Park is free to enter, but surround site may need to pay, such as foot onsen.

Footspas were pretty good and the scenery walking through the park along the river is quite beautiful. Downside is the horrible plastic sandals you have to wear to use the spas, other than that the variety of spas with different tiles to stimulate, sooth or punish your feet in each of the seven separate baths was excruciatingly pleasant. 😬

This place recently had a renewal, so I was excited to see what it was like. What a shock! Before, this was a place which I thought really defined Yugawara as a hot spring place, relaxing, friendly and laid back. A lovely distinctive hot spring place with about 12 different foot hot springs at the end of a beautiful path along the river, which were cheap and available for everyone and Yugawara residents got discounts. Now, the wooded path leading to the hot spring is still beautiful, but the foot hot spring is gone, replaced by a soulless and very expensive hot spring and a trendy and soulless relaxation place. It's completely unoriginal and detracts from the uniqueness and welcoming feeling of the town. Yugawara has gone down a lot in my estimation because of this wrong headed decision to sterilise the uniqueness of this location. If you're thinking of coming here, maybe you should go to Atami, or Izunokuni instead. Very disappointing.

While access to the base of the falls may require climbing experience due to the lack of an established path, it offers an adventurous opportunity for those with such skills.

The Fudo waterfall is easily accessible by bus in about 20 minutes from the Yugawara train station. It’s the second stop from the end of the bus route leaving riders off right beside the falls. Makuyama Park is a hillside park that comes to life in February when thousands of plum trees bloom, creating a stunning display. The park offers BBQ and picnic areas, as well as trails leading to the grove of plum trees. Visitors can enjoy the lovely scents and take a hike up the mountain for some exercise. Additionally, there are playgrounds, river access for fishing, and various trails available from the park.
Makuyama Park spends 11 months out of the year essentially dormant and uninteresting, but in February it puts on its full dress in the form of a wide variety of plum blossoms. Now is the time to visit. For those in the area on the last week of February, I highly recommend visiting. For details ask at the visitor center next to Yugawara Station.

(Translated by Google) Visited on a public holiday in February 2020 to see the plum festival and hike Mt. Makuyama and Mt. Nango. It was a warm, sunny day in the middle of a three-day weekend, so it was very crowded. There was a regular bus or a free shuttle bus available on Saturdays and Sundays from Yugawara Station, but the line was so long that it reached capacity right in front of me, and I had to take the next bus 30 minutes later. The driver apologetically announced, ``Due to a shortage of drivers, there will be no additional flights. The bus will be limited to capacity, so if you are unable to take the bus, please take the next bus.'' If the timing is bad, you may not be able to ride right away, so it's best to act early. It was about a 40 minute walk from the station to the park, and there were many people walking. The parking lot was full from early morning, and there was a line of about 50 cars waiting for a space, but how long would it take to wait? It takes effort to visit, whether by private car or by public transportation. When you arrive at the park, you pay 200 yen at the gate to enter. You can pay with an IC card or cash, but the process will go more smoothly if you pay at a cash counter. I feel like I'm somehow putting the cart before the horse... The most important thing was the plum blossoms, but even though the information said that it was the best time to see them, I was left with the impression, ``Hmm?'' When viewed from a distance, the entire foot of the mountain looks beautiful with a faint pink color, but if you look closely at each individual tree, you will notice that the flowers are sparse, and the flowers are small and a little wilted, giving the impression of a lack of energy. I feel that the plum orchard at my local agricultural park (although there are only 100 trees) is much more well-maintained. Well, seeing the plum grove from a high place with the mountains in the background is like no other, so I was satisfied. Beyond the plum garden is the Makuyama hiking course. There were also a lot of climbers here, so it was difficult to pass each other. However, after climbing for an hour, the scenery changed to a snow-covered forest that was completely different from the plum garden, and you could occasionally see Sagami Bay, so it was a fun and varied climb. However, I didn't know what I had done wrong, but some regular visitors came up from the plum garden in their casual clothes, which was scary. The mountain trail was slippery from the melting snow, so even though I was equipped with climbing poles and climbing shoes, I was nervous as I walked, wondering if I would fall. Although it is not a big mountain at 630m above sea level, we recommend climbing with appropriate equipment. It's a good idea to wear a hat as melted snow and ice will fall from the trees. You can take photographs and videos as long as other customers aren't in them; don't bother the other customers and you're good. Noodles were amazing and I love how simple can be done so well. The aftertaste is slightly stronger compared to Nakiryu and you're not thirsty or bloated afterwards. Expect a bit more oil in the bowl as part of the broth. It is a bit on the pricier side compared to other bowls elsewhere but you don't have to wait as long as you get your reservation. That's a plus. Reservation is once a week for the week of servings so make sure you're on time because you have to fight for spots. It's worth it overall.

Undoubtedly the best of Shoyu ramen in Japan or in the world, all the booking procedures, transportation and waitings are worth it. People who haven’t tried a handful of shoyu ramen might not be as astonished as those ramen lovers. The shoyu soup is just so full of layers. ご馳走様でした😋🙏🏻

The reservation opens every Tuesday noon on Omakase, so be sure to have your phone ready with a stable internet connection. Make sure you check-in with them 10min prior to your time slot. I ordered the 2 most popular bowls (I think?): the shoyu ramen and the shio tsukemen, The shio tsukemen was extremely light, which helps highlight the fragrance of the noodles. However, this feels more like an appetizer, and a bowl you eat for the experience. The star of my meal was the shoyu ramen. Top tier for sure. It's something I would crave and eventually come back to eat again. If you can only fit 1 bowl in your belly, the shoyu ramen is the one to get. Nevertheless, I'm not sure people will consider this trip worth the time and effort. The reservation, the roundtrip from Tokyo, and the price of the bowls themselves quickly bump up the cost of this whole visit. If by some miracle, you manage to reserve a slot, align it with your trip down South while having an active JR Pass... copium

These were life changing bowls of ramen. I’ll never have a better bowl of shoyu ramen. Every ingredient, every flavor, balanced others out perfectly. The broth was not overly salty, there was plenty of umami. The pork was thinly sliced and had so much flavor without any unnecessary chew. The tsukemen was not as enjoyable for me but I still appreciated the quality and care of each ingredient. It was truly magnificent.

Came around 2.45pm on a Sunday and was lucky to miss the crowds and had to wait only about 10min to get seated. Bought my meal order at the vending machine, and ordered the first option because it looked like the house special/ recommended item (also because I can't read japanese and wanted to make quick decision as there were others waiting behind me). They serve straight and thin ramen, and the one I had came in a clear and light but flavourful broth that I enjoyed very much.

Having tried Nakiryu, Tsuta, Tomita, and Sobahouse, Iida-Shoten's shoyu absolutely stands out. Luckily had a JR pass which made the shinkansen trip from Tokyo absolutely worth it. Was a long trip, so made sure I tried two bowls. Got the shio tsukemen too which was excellent as well. Only come if you're able to reserve on Omakase.

This is referred as japan’s number 1 noodle, and is well live up to its reputation. From the moment you get in until the moment you get out everything is perfect. Ramen is at their own league, perfectly silky noodle with ideal texture. You are in dreamland after the ramen, the rice with Tokyo X pork in plum sauce make the finish that will remember for a long long time.

Timing the visit is going to influence the overall experience. It seems like it is better to try your luck by coming late than early. I ordered the shoyu ramen. It comes served with 2 slices of chashu of two variety of top quality pork. The broth is a mix of pork and chicken base, it looks oily but it is light. The overall is a great experience and feels like the owner and his staff do their best to serve best quality ramen.

I was allowed to visit "IiIda Schoten" 5 times this year and traveled all the way from Yokohama each time. I've visited nearly every famous ramen shop in the Tokyo area that has a very high rating. Including all ramen restaurants with a "michelin star" and numerous others. But no ramen came even close to that of "Iida Shoten". In my opinion, the Shio Tsukemen are simply the best ramen ever. (And I've certainly tried one new ramen per week in Japan in the past two years, on average.) So be sure to visit Iida Shouten if you can. You will not regret it.

Ordered shoyu wanton char siew ramen. Mellow yet full of umami flavor soup, sliced pork belly and roast pork melt in mouth and a clean flavor of pork, unbelievably flavor. chicken wanton is delicate in flavor, pork wanton has enveloped a spiced pork flavor. Wonderful! Noodle was straight and it works well with this particular broth. If you want to try a never before tried ramen, this is The ramen pilgrimage that you must take. Beware, you must go early in the morning to receive a number ticket in order to secure a seat. 2nd Visit: Salt based ramen tasted even better. Soup was full of umami while harmonizing with the noodles and other ingredients. Pork was porky, tender and meltingly umami-ness. Chicken has a bite to it while tender. It is just the best ramen that I ever had. Tsukemen(つけ麺) was delicious as well. The noodles was really springy in a slurry water. The fish broth accompany with it was packed with fish flavor while can be combine with a few side ingredient to eat with it. A different experience and pretty delicious.

Located in Yugawara, Herlequin Bis is a remarkable French restaurant that offers an exquisite dining experience. With its beautiful bamboo terrace and emphasis on locally sourced ingredients, this establishment serves delectable dishes inspired by the French cuisine. The creamy soup, a delightful blend of flavors combining bitterness and sweetness, consists of 70% bell peppers, 20% eggplants, and 10% tomatoes.
Great french restaurant in Yugawara area. This restaurant is little far from Yugawara station. You should take taxi at the station, so you arrive at this 10-20 minutes. All dishes are delicious and the view of bamboo forest from each seats is great as well.

While some note that there might be a wait during peak times, many patrons highly recommend trying out this spot for its fresh and well-prepared dishes.

味の大西 本店 is currently a popular topic on the internet, and it has been frequented by many customers for several years. The taste and ambiance of the restaurant have been extensively covered in various media outlets, but I will refrain from going into detail as it is largely similar to what has already been said. In my personal opinion, even hardcore fans of B-class gourmet restaurants can appreciate the unique experience provided by this establishment.
(Translated by Google) postscript I have attached a recent image of char siu wonton noodles that I found. My younger brother's team sells ``12 frozen raw wontons for ¥1,200'' to take home. It also comes with two bowls of diluted soup. You can also buy it by talking to your brother's team after eating with your brother's team! Although it is one shop, there are two teams, and the ramen is slightly different. Big brother team If you go around 11:00 when the store opens, the little brother team may not be there yet, so if you visit early, you'll definitely be served by the big brother team. "Charshu Wonton Noodles ¥1350" has 500g of Charshu and 200g of Wonton. Even if you don't order a large bowl, the amount of noodles seems to be adjusted according to the customer's situation, and it was served in a large bowl. The soup is characterized by its punchy soy sauce flavor. Younger Brother Team Around 11:40 to 12:00, you'll see two dark-skinned, fisherman-style men wandering around in front of the store. These two are the younger brother team. If you are ignored by the younger brother team at the entrance, you will be served by the older brother team, but if you feel like eating the younger brother team's ramen, you can directly call out to the dark-skinned people near the entrance of the store, "This is ○ person!" Let's try it. When the younger brother team serves customers, they serve chilled Duzhong tea. When ordering, he recommends "wonton noodles" (¥1200), but when you ask for wonton noodles, the younger brother's service automatically changes them to "char siu wonton noodles." You won't be charged ¥1350 later, it's a compliment from my younger brother. This is also comparable in volume to my brother's team's chashu wonton noodles, and to be honest, it's huge! If you're not a big eater, you can order regular ramen, and they won't make you feel bad if you decline the recommendation, but you won't understand if you order rice dishes such as katsudon. The taste of the soup was light and gentle compared to the older brother's team. There is no parking lot at the store, but you can use the coin parking at ``Chibori Yugawara Sweets Factory'', which is about a 1-minute walk away, for ¥300 per hour. There's a tense atmosphere between both teams and a tense feeling, but it's great entertainment if you go in the mood of watching a professional wrestling match. You don't try to get the customers involved, but instead serve the customers of your own team with delicious ramen. Masu. However, taking pictures inside the store and operating or taking out mobile phones is absolutely prohibited. Let's treat this as movie theater screening etiquette!

If it's your first time, it's better to prepare by reading reviews. I went by car, so I looked for a parking lot, but couldn't find one. Go to a nearby coin parking lot. (100 yen for up to 90 minutes) When I asked him after the meal, he apparently only rented one car. There was a limited number of people standing outside (Dai), and two people entered the store in front of me...After a short while, I called out to Dai and was guided into the store. I was fine, but the inside of the store wasn't very clean. My younger brother, who has a loud voice, offered me a mug of tea and said, ``Welcome!'' We recommend the wonton noodles! Regular customers don't order char siu noodles because even wonton noodles come with char siu noodles! What do you do? It's a lot, but is it okay? ” and ordered wonton noodles for 1,200 yen 🍜 The mood is not as dangerous as the rumors... The tables in the restaurant were almost full. In this day and age, everyone should have a smartphone, but no one has taken it out...have they done their homework? lol A single female customer orders more ramen after finishing something... strong! The duo from earlier also seemed to be serving their younger brother, and they were being served wonton men (a huge portion of pork siu). Oh? There was a rumor that the order in which the older brother entered the store would determine who served the younger brother. A lone male customer enters the store and is served by his modest older brother. I ordered katsudon. ``Wait and eat pickles until the katsudon is ready!'' ” he asked awkwardly. By the time the first two had almost finished eating, the wonton men (char siu) bowl was served🍜 My younger brother said to me, ``You can drink the tea from the plastic bottle!'' ” he said with concern. Photographed in just a moment. (Cellphones are prohibited in the store) ``If it's hard to eat, use a plate! 'He brings me a plate to avoid the char siu. The 1cm thick char siu has a fatty pork belly and a lean loin. A little salty. The wontons are about the size of a small-sized egg and contain about 4 pieces. It has a lot of menma and bean sprouts. The noodles are curly noodles. I managed to finish the whole meal...it's impossible for a woman to eat so little. Thank you for the meal!
