Dazaifu

Dazaifu is a city on Japan’s Kyushu Island. It's best known for the grand Tenmangu Shrine, which is surrounded by thousands of plum trees and popular with students praying for academic success. Nearby, Kōmyōzen-ji Temple has tranquil Zen rock gardens. Kyushu National Museum explores Japanese culture within the context of Asian history. Northeast of the city, a trail leads to a shrine at the peak of Mount Hōman.

Museums
Kyushu National Museum is a modern museum with ever-changing exhibits and a futuristic mirrored design. Nestled in the serene eastern hills of Dazaifu, the building resembles a colossal space station and delves into the cultural connections between Asia and Kyushu. The museum's 4th floor hosts a permanent 'Cultural Exchange Exhibition' showcasing invaluable artifacts from across the continent, complemented by English signage and an audioguide for comprehensive understanding.
A great museum for artifacts and history important to Kyushu and Japan as a whole. All info is offered in English alongside Japanese.

(Translated by Google) Visited on January 13, 2024. When you enter from Tenmangu Shrine, you go down a long escalator and then a long moving walkway until you see a large glass building, which is the museum. Once inside, purchase an admission ticket (700 yen for adults) from the ticket vending machine, then take the escalator up to the regular exhibition on the top floor. I learned later that the set ticket is cheaper if you also want to visit the Dazaifu Tenmangu Treasure Hall. You are allowed to take photos inside the museum, and you are also welcome to post them on SNS. The regular exhibitions are on one floor, making it smaller than the National Museum in Tokyo. This is a huge museum with countless interesting historical artifacts. we only had time to see my main interest: the Japanese sword collection. Oh, what an amazing collection it is! There are many ubu Kamakura and even Heian pieces. It's a must-see for sword lovers.

Fantastic museum with rotating world-class exhibits! Lots of measures being taken for COVID-19 atm, but the upside is that it’s not crowded at all. If you like a leisurely-pace, it’s a great time to visit. Check the online site for current and future exhibits. If you visit here after the shrine, you can take an elaborate escalator system up to the top to get to the museum entrance. Honestly, it’s a fantastic space for art and ancient items on display.

(Translated by Google) This is a national museum located near Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. When you walk through the tunnel, you will find a museum. The building is entirely made of glass and is luxurious. Is it luxurious because it is a national museum? There were ancient exhibits on display, from the Jomon and Yayoi periods to the Edo period. I'm not good at history, but I enjoyed the explanations. Earthenware, clay figurines, and bells were on display. I was impressed that there were pottery with beautiful patterns even in ancient times. There is a place to leave your luggage, so you don't have to worry about carrying a lot of luggage.

🏯💫 Timeless Journey at Kyushu National Museum 🖼️✨ 🏛️🌸 Last month, our New Year's trip to Dazaifu was enriched by a visit to the Kyushu National Museum. It's a vast treasure trove where we immersed ourselves in exhibitions like the New Year Special Display, Hatsune Maki-e Trousseau, and National Treasures from the Tokugawa Art Museum. Spending over two hours, we delved deep into Japanese culture and the profound impacts of the Age of Discovery on Japan. The museum not only showcases a rich tapestry of Japanese history but also connects it with the wider world through its cultural exchange exhibitions. Its architecture, blending modernity with traditional elements, creates an inspiring backdrop for exploring the artifacts. A must-visit for anyone keen on exploring the depths of history and culture. 🕰️🌏

Beautiful museum with many interesting things to see. Good for people with low mobility (wide halls, places to sit, and escalator into the premises) but I wasn't able to see whether or not there was elevator access. Staff were friendly and able to answer the few questions I had about the current exhibition. It is clearly signed where photos are and aren't permitted but if in doubt, staff will assist. Audio guide was in English and contained a lot of helpful information. The temple gardens outside are amazing so ensure you allow plenty of time to explore both inside and out!

Nice museum with lots of good quality artifacts about Asian history. Not the most interesting to me personally, as it was not interactive at all. The museum was also quite dark.

You'll find many of the treasures of Japan from its earliest civilizations to the age of the samurai and beyond. It is a must-visit museum whenever in Kyushu.
Norman Fewell — Google review
I walked by this museum and decided to pay it a visit. While it looked quite big in the outside there’s only one special exhibition and one regular exhibition. I expected to see something more related to Kyushu in particular but it was more about Japanese history in general. It is still a good museum though.

My second visithere! It's been 10 years since my previous one, and it's definitely has been too long! From the history of Kyushu, Japan and Fukuoka to various cultural aspects of other Asian countries, the exhibition is very well done and engaging. I highly recommend a visit of you're in the Fukuoka region.

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, located in Fukuoka, Japan, is a popular Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of learning, Sugawara Michizane. The shrine boasts a museum and beautiful gardens filled with 6,000 plum trees that bloom from late January to early March.
Amazing place to see! Definitely recommend. After you explore the main garden and shrine, adventure behind it in the trees. You may even just stumble upon another shrine like we did! There are plenty of food and souvenir shops in the area as well. Definitely a fun outing ❤️
Faith Minter — Google review
Lots of lovely shops along the way to the temple but the temple itself was undergoing works and so you do the praying in front of a scaffolding with an image of the temple. If you walk round the back you could catch glimpses of the priest citing prayers if lucky. We went on a weekday and it was fairly busy with lots of tourist buses parked in the car park. Gardens are beautiful. Please don’t walk in the middle through the gates unless you’re a deity.
Michael Ong — Google review
There are many shops on the way to the temple where we can buy snacks, sweets or different kinds of souvenirs. We bought some puzzles to kill our free time. A nice experience to enjoy Japanese culture. Definitely a good place to visit in Fukuoka.
Alex Nguyen — Google review
One of the best Shrines I have visited in Japan. Admission is Free. Very spacious and interesting place. It was a little crowded for a weekday but there was still plenty of room to walk and take pictures. Plenty of cheap paid parking lots within 4 minutes walking distance. 3 hours with cost ¥400. Definitely highly recommended and you will enjoy yourself. Rub the bull and get ready for a nice hike around the grounds.
Jay Johnson — Google review
It’s a very beautiful shrine complex, and definitely the most famous and grand in Fukuoka prefecture. The surrounding town is quite charming, and the food stands around the shrine are excellent and a perfect place to get some Japanese street food.
Jacob Newcomb — Google review
Definitely worth a visit if you have the time. Taking the train from Fukuoka to Dazaifu Station cost 410 yen, taking about 30 minutes. Since the shrine is nearby, plan about half a day here. I was amazed by the giant trees at this shrine. The facility and area is very well maintained. Unfortunately you can't go inside the building. The shrine is filled without tourist traps too.
Rabbit Wooden — Google review
It's not just a shrine. While walking on your way to the shrine, there's a lot of souvenir stores and snacks sold on the street. It's a famous tourist attraction too! The shrine itself if really huge and you can hike further to the Inari shrine. You can also walk to the National Park (but it's really far) A place worth the visit!

Dazaifu Tenmangu and surrounding area are a must see! The walkway leading to the shrine is five minutes walk from Dazaifu station. The many shops and cafes leading to the shrine offer delicious sweets like the famous grilled mochi filled with azuki- sweet red bean paste- super delicious! There are lots of cute souvenirs to buy! It’s hard to choose! The shrine area is beautiful with several ponds including an iris pond that is home to many turtles. The shrine grounds have several places where you can purchase malas, amulets and your fortune! There are quiet places tucked here and there where you can sit and meditate or just enjoy the beauty of the grounds.

Nice place to visit. Nice scenery with a very unique temple roof. The place is huge with lots of greenery. There’s a giant tree there under protected species.
kim kuan — Google review
The shrine that every tourists will visit if they are in Fukuoka. Quite crowded at 10am as the tour groups are just arriving. The crowded part is at the Main Street and the shrine. After giving your prayers, continue exploring behind the shrine and you will chance upon the more serene part of Dazaifu. Another hidden shrine at the back where you have to walk through many tori gates to reach. And a restaurant that sells good udon too. Just explore and don’t just leave after looking at the main shrine.
Seah Jia Hui — Google review
A nice place! Slightly more crowded than other famous shrines in Fukuoka area. I found the most special point to be the main building, which has plants growing on the roof instead of traditional roof tiling. It’s a really unique point I haven’t seen anywhere else! Gives a very refreshing vibe~ Pictures can’t really capture its beauty!

Great place for scholars. The myth associated with the place is more interesting. Can you spot the flying plum tree? The Kyushu national museum in the vicinity covers pieces from all over the world. Entrance is free for students. Great place to pass your time for a day near Fukuoka.

One of the most beloved day trip place near from Fukuoka city. Usually take half an hour by car, and within an hour by public transportation like bus or subway from downtown. One of the least interesting place I visited in Japan. The place is full of tourists. The food around is digusting and high priced. There is nothing particularly beautiful around and the place is pretty small. Nevertheless, a nice little Shinto shrine is hidden in the forest behind.

Really enjoyed my visit here, but so be prepared for the crowds on a weekend. Some of the vendors had long lines and the streets have many tourists. Plenty of souvenir shops around also if you're looking for a gift! There are some trails that surround the shrine also which were nice to venture down. Worth the visit!

Understand that this beautiful shrine is dedicated to learning, culture and arts. And we were fortunate enough to witness a ceremony involving young aspiring kids and their parents keen to embark on their learning journeys. Beautiful park with the colours of autumn. Lots of shops lining the way to the shrine overwhelmed by tourists.

Dazaifu Amusement Park is a tranquil theme park situated in the serene location of Dazaifu. It offers simple and modest rides for young children surrounded by beautiful trees providing shade. The park is not crowded, making it an ideal place for kids to enjoy themselves without any disturbance. This amusement park caters mainly to children between 2-5 years old and is larger than it appears at first glance. Although it may be slightly expensive, visitors will definitely have a good time.
It’s location in the Dazaifu ! Not so many people stay in this Amusement park so kids can enjoy the facilities. They love it ! Good for age 2-5 years kids

Verry expensive ! 600 yens to go inside the parck plus every ride is around 300 yens to 500 yens each person ! So if you have kids you need to ride with them and pay the fee too . Really Really expensive for very old small amusement parks . If it was less expensive i definitely come again .

Kamado Shrine is a serene and picturesque Shinto shrine located amidst trees with various sculptures, walking paths, and seasonal foliage in Japan. The place is very popular among locals during the red leaves season; however, visitors must endure long queues to park their cars. The maple leaves are beautiful but not entirely "red" enough as expected. Despite being small, tourists can explore the entire place within one and a half hours easily.
Shrine with scenic view, get to watch the best and most beautiful sunset here, right behind the souvenir shop. You can get to see Demon Slayer related art here too. You can take bus to reach at the bus stop right infront Fukuoka Bank at Daizaifu Station.
John Oh — Google review
Due to the fall foliage, the shrine was very busy on a Saturday morning. However, the shrine is very small in comparison to many of the other Shrines in the area. While the fall foliage was nice, with all the crowds and not having too many maple trees, it didn’t really seem worth it. 10 minutes is all you really need for this shrine.

Went for the Night Up Dazaifu event and it was beautiful. Definitely recommend. Except if you take the city bus to get to the shrine, the bus stop is on the roadside opposite of the train station. Not by the sign in front of the station. We learned that the hard way and had to walk!

Visited on 20/11/22, a Sunday afternoon. The car queue to the parking lots is long (at least 30 mins wait) and the place is popular with locals during red leaves season. Maple leaves are pretty but seem not "red" enough. The place is quite small so can visit the whole place within 1.5 hours.

Took a bus near the Daizaifu station to a mountain to reach this temple. The bus fare is 100 yen and though it is a small temple, i love the view from the temple. Even in early December we can still see some colour leaves. I learnt this temple is popular since it has the same name as the last name of Tanjiro Kamado from Demon Slayer. Worth a visit.

The Dazaifu Government Office Remains hold ancient foundation stones and remnants of past government offices, set amidst cherry trees. It serves as an excellent starting point for a leisurely walk around the stunning surroundings. The shrines in the vicinity may have killer wasps, which only adds to their charm. Visitors can admire the sakura trees while taking in the historical landmark's magnificence.
A cool park to visit. It is very peaceful, there were lots of people out walking their dogs and kids with nets catching bugs. There is not a lot to look at but it was great to see the foundation stones.

If you take a walk from Futsukaichi Station, you will arrive at the historic site that was once the center of the city. Tenmangu Shrine will be the focus, but I think you can learn more about the history if you visit all of them at once. Recommended for going to and from Tenmangu Shrine.

Kasanoya is a renowned teahouse in Dazaifu, known for its specialty, Umegae mochi. This delectable treat features a lightly baked mochi cake filled with sweet azuki paste and stamped in the shape of a plum. During the bustling plum blossom festival, visitors flock to Kasanoya to savor this local delicacy. The teahouse offers both dine-in and takeout options, with reasonable prices and complimentary Japanese tea.
Umegae mochi (梅ヶ枝餅) is a popular specialty of Dazaifu (太宰府). It is a lightly baked mochi cake filled with sweet azuki paste and stamped in plum shape. On the street leading up to Tenmangu shrine (天満宮), you will see plenty of shops selling umegae mochi. We picked the mostly recommended teahouse to enjoy this local delicacy. The takeout line was really long but luckily we could easily got a dine-in table. *Umegae 梅ヶ枝餅🌟 The OG umegae mochi was my fav. The mochi skin was thin, chewy and soft, complementing well with the adequately sweet red bean filling. *Kinako Mochi 黄金餅 Generously sprinkled with kinako powder, I could literally bathe my umagae mochi in the pool of soybean dust. It combined warabimochi with the local snack. *Milk Choco Mochi 白梅【ミルクチョコ】 Coated with milk chocolate drizzle and chocolate crunches, it was a playful twist of the traditional umegae mochi if you’re down for something new. *Matcha 抹茶 *Black Milk Tea ブラックミルクティー

Might be the best umegaemochi shop around here, we always come back during the plum blossom festival and take away. Last time we decided to sit down and have a break during the crowded plum blossom festival. As a mentaiko aficionado, I couldn't pass up the chance to visit Fukuya in Dazaifu 🍣. The experience was absolutely worth sharing! Be prepared for a wait, as it's quite the popular spot, but trust me, it's worth it 🕒. Their Mentaiko Chazuke is not just a dish; it's a culinary journey 🌟, served with instructions to enjoy it in three delightful ways. Starting with the plain mentaiko over rice 🍚, then mixed with tororo, and finally enjoyed as a warming chazuke 🍵, each step offers a unique blend of flavors and textures. For those on the go, the takeaway option is fantastic 🏃💨. You get a smaller, more affordable bowl of Mentaiko Chazuke, perfect for savoring as you explore the streets 🚶‍♂️🍜. It's a great way to taste this local specialty without the wait for a table. The shop also doubles as a paradise for mentaiko enthusiasts, with an array of mentaiko-themed souvenirs 🛍️. The intimate dining space adds to the overall charm, providing a cozy and authentic atmosphere 💖. This place is a reminder that the best things often come in small packages (or bowls!). To wrap it up, Fukuya is a must-visit for anyone who loves mentaiko 🌶️🐟. It’s an entire experience - from the anticipation in the queue to the delightful last spoonful of chazuke. A truly delightful experience! 😊👍

Most clerks’ attitudes are pretty good and kind, but a female clerk in front of the store held the sample was arrogant. When I asked her if I could taste the sample, she almost threw to me and my family as if we were beggars.

OMG! I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT! You have to visit here if you are visiting Daizaifu 太宰府 It’s not a touristy place but rather local. The service was 101/100! Food was amazing and there was no time limitation for dining in. Price is rather cheap for such a great food and service, also the atmosphere and lovely interior design.

Service was excellent. Food was good. Price was reasonable given the amount of dishes. Serving of foods was like Chinese 10-course dinner, one part at a time. 😀

Beautiful setting with a traditional garden for tofu based kaiseki meals. Tatami rooms with space for legs under tables. On a small side street near Dazaifu Shrine without parking, but two small paid parking lots are within walking distance. Kaiseki meal featuring yudofu and yuba was very good and nicely presented. Guests are allowed to stroll in the Japanese garden, and will loan you an umbrella if needed.

Awesome!!! This restaurant is located in a peaceful and quiet position of Dazaifu area amidst the spectacular backdrop of Japanese garden. The food is spectacular, of high quality, traditionally prepared by best ingredients. For those who love Tofu, I would highly recommend this place. Go for a set menu of your choice and enjoy the rest. The restaurant itself is a well decorated traditional Japanese house offering a sophisticated style and high class appeal. Staff are courteous and helpful. Check out the corner at the entrance, it has many interesting souvenirs though prices are relatively high.

It took us a while to find this restaurant, since it's located in a residential area, although not far from the Fukuoka Tower. We ordered a 6 course dinner and all dishes had tofu in different styles and preparations. We loved all the concoctions, especially the skewers which are the signature dish. One has to like tofu otherwise it will be a waste to visit this restaurant. The staff gave us an extended version of the menu in English and would point to the corresponding title when bringing the dishes to our table. They tried to communicate in English as best as they could and we appreciated the effort. The dining style is kaiseki and the service delivers accordingly. We were stuffed by the time we left the restaurant. Prices are on the high range.

The only two things this Ichiran branch has going for itself is location and the Ichiran name. The soup was salty. The saltiness overwhelms other tastes. There are better options for ramen. But for a quick bite to fill the stomach, this place would work.

Queue was insane at 2+pm on a weekday. Queued 1hr 10mins before my turn. Ramen was good and comforting under the cold and windy weather. After all, this is the place of origin of Ichiran. Should still try at least once!

Small shop; 16 people ish. Very good; broth, noodles, pork, all excellent. Not sure if worth an hour wait though! Staff friendly and service as expected. Good luck everyone!

Tastes great and the process and environment is interesting. Great for people who do don’t know Japanese. However it is overpriced compared to other ramen shops.

Unique and cozy for me as I have tried those single stall dining experience. The ramen is very nice as you can pick your ramen preference noodle and soup. The order method is very modern as there is a vending machine outside for you to order.

Ramen is definitely delicious, but the service is amazing. I forgot my son's bag with all the souvenirs he likes in the restaurant. I called and the employee was very helpful to send it back to me. I'm very thankful, the customer service is fantastic.

Ichiran is one of the best chained store tonkotsu ramen, I've visited quite a few stores, and everything was so consistent, the flavor, the richness and the portion was very good. You can add additional toppings such as noodle, egg, meat, leeks and many more.

Always at least visit Ichiran Ramen once when I come to Japan. They serve one of the best Japanese ramen. Plus, at this shop, you get to have it in a star shaped bowl, for luck :)
