Nosara

Nosara is a village and a district on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula. It’s known as a yoga center, and for Pacific beaches like Playa Guiones, with its long surf break. Playa Pelada has a reef just offshore and a tidal blowhole. SIBU Sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates animals like coatimundi and white-faced monkeys. Just north, the beach at Ostional Wildlife Refuge is a nesting site for olive ridley turtles.

The staff was open and insight-giving and the animals super cute despite their often tragic background stories! It is sad to hear what the local „developers“ „plan“ to do with the perimeter around. We were invited to feel and think like children and discovered a new world within the sanctuary (symbiotic trees on one side of the path, parasites on the other). I can only recommend to take the tour even though partially disturbing, it is enlightening if not eye-opening and the entry fee pays back to the animals within!

Absolutely a wonderful experience for my wife and I. Everyone is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. A fantastic opportunity to get close to our little friends while respecting them at the same time. I know you will cherish the experience and your donation is so vital to their work. Sibu is an amazing facility whose main goal is to look out for the health and welfare of its animals, with the goal of releasing those animals into the wild if at all possible. I encourage you to check out what they do and donate if you are able. They have helped so many animals in the area and their heart is in the right place.

One of the highlights of our summer in Costa Rica was visiting Sibu. Highly recommend for those looking to better understand wildlife and plant life. We did a bunch of research and decided this was the right nature experience for us; we were not disappointed. We drove 2 hours from Playa Grande/Tamarindo and the roads were *very* bumpy so plan for extra travel time. It was tough to find; we thought Google Maps had dropped us in the middle of nowhere because we didn't see the welcome sign or gate from our angle of entrance off the road, but volunteer Amy was at the gate and waved us in (phew!). There were 7 people in our group (4 adults + 3 kids 6-11yo; note that another family mentioned that there's a min age requirement of 5yo in case you have littles). We were joined by a couple and another family of 4. Sibu tries to keep group sizes small, and only offer a couple tours a day and only a couple days a week, so snagging a spot is special. A combo of Fabian and Amy (both extraordinary) delivered the +/-45min walking tour through the jungle; we saw monkeys, learned about a lot of plants, termites, the matapalo tree, families of coaties, and were offered coconut waters, juice, water. Then Vicki, the founder/owner, delivers a quick +/-30min presentation in (what feels like) a treehouse balcony since it's a landing built around trees on the edge of a landing. We hear the founder's story, nonprofit origin story, risks and opportunities to monkey preservation, and so much more. Then Fabian helped us visit the couple of monkeys (+/- 30mins) that they care for who are unable to return to the wild for a number of reasons. Hearing the stories of each monkey was my favorite part; equal parts heart-wrenching and promising. Then we were gifted a calendar/family and invited to buy t-shirts; I'm bummed that I didn't act fast enough to snag one before we were whisked into the owner's truck to hitch a ride down the mountain back to the entrance gate. We truly loved this visit and urge you to make it happen too. Couple notes from us: wear pants and/or bug spray (inc. on your face; my son got bitten on his face - the only place where we didn't apply!). There's a lot of tree coverage, but you should still wear sunscreen, closed toed shoes, hats, stay hydrated, pee before you get there (bathroom stop about an hour into the tour), book ahead, contact them directly if you have trouble. They are a legit, scrappy, exceptional nonprofit organization and could use your support.

It‘s a beautiful place to visit! The tour was great and really interesting! Lot‘s of stuff to learn about the flora and fauna of costa rica. We saw wild animals really close and heard about their storys. They always make sure, that the animals are fine and feeling save, so we had a really good feeling with this tour. The founder and the volunteers do great and really important work there, thank you so much for the nice day!

Visiting Sibu Wildlife Sanctuary was wholesome, exciting, emotional and an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything. This organization is so intentional about the experience they provide and they always put the animals first. The volunteers and employees here are so passionate about their work and the individual animals living there, which makes the tour experience super special. They’re funny, knowledgeable and happy to answer questions. The owner, Vicky, shares her incredible story with the tour group and educates you about her furry residents, their environmental threats, their history, their tendencies and emotions. Vicky must be one of the most selfless people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. We got to meet spider monkeys, howler monkeys, a pig and more. We learned about local plants, fauna and flora. If I’m ever in Nosara again I will be back, it was worth every penny! Especially knowing our contributions go towards saving more animals, not exploiting and abusing them like many other animal excursions in the area.

Had an amazing tour led by Fabian and Henry. Its incredible being able to see the great work the sanctuary does and all their efforts to rehabilitate as many monkeys as they can. Keep up the inspiring work.

Sibu is a wonderful place with a team of caring folks, many of the animals’ stories are sad but they’re given new life. Our family of five thoroughly enjoyed it during our Costa Rican vacation in August. Bring lots of bug spray! So worth it.
Kate Hall — Google review
This was the highlight of my trip in Costa Rica. I learned so much and am really impressed with the incredible work the team at Sibu is doing for the welfare of animals in the area. Was lovely to be followed around all day by so many cute, white-nosed coati. :)
Claudia Piotrowska — Google review
My friends and I visited the sanctuary while on vacation in the area. Staff were friendly, and the fellow who led our tour was funny and kind. The tour starts along a walking trail of a few hundred metres, then up a total of 120 steep stairs (my friend counted). About halfway, there is a break and staff provide coconut water straight from the coconut, juice boxes, or bottled water (I’d recommend they provide a higher ratio of water to juice to be more accessible to those with dietary restrictions). At the top, the owner shares an engaging presentation on how the sanctuary came to be, and what threats the wildlife face in the area. As someone who does facilitation for a career, I was impressed with how well-done the presentation was, and how it followed some basic principles of learning. The staff are very clear and reasonable about boundaries related to photo taking (no selfies with an animal, no photos showing the owner’s house), and it was a delight to see so many monkeys and wildlife. The owner is very kind, and even led me aside for an extra chance to photograph an iguana who was passing by in the trees. It is a wonderful service they are providing to vulnerable animals in Costa Rica, and I hope they continue to get the recognition and support they deserve.
Gina Blank — Google review
The walk is lovely and the animals are well cared for. We learned a lot. Children are welcome over the age of 5 and we brought our young kids. It was a bit hot with not many liquids and included a hard climb uphill but good for grit. However during the presentation, there were descriptions of gang abuse of animals and very graphic photographs of electrocuted monkeys. This is R rated content. Parents should receive a warning that graphic and upsetting content is included in the presentation so they can make a decision whether to expose their children. In our case one parent asked to fast forward past the graphic videos and the presenter said “they need to know about this. In my view and the view of the other parents who watched this presentation, children do MOT need to espoused to stories of gang violence c animal abuse and graphic photos of burned electrocuted monkeys with raw flesh exposed. I’m not even sure adults need to be exposed to that information. I do think it is important to be helping animals and working to protect them from electrocution and abuse- and I believe there are more responsible ways to disseminate this message. I’m always grateful for people doing the hard work to protect animals and I happily contribute to that cause here and elsewhere.

We had an amazing visit to Sibu Wildlife Sanctuary. This was a very eye-opening and educational tour. The work that the team is doing at Sibu is very important for the monkeys of Costa Rica. The visit started with a tour of the property, then we enjoyed an educational talk about the work of Sibu. The visit concluded with getting to see the monkeys at the sanctuary. We visited with our 9 year old daughter who thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the monkeys and the conservation taking place here. Definitely a highlight of our trip to Nosara.

We visited Sibu Wildlife Sanctuary as a family during our recent visit to the Nosara region of Costa Rica. This was an incredible experience for our family and we loved learning about their conservation efforts for the area. This was a great tour. We enjoyed seeing the property, learning about the conservation efforts, and seeing the animals. As we've driven around Costa Rica, we've kept our eyes open for the monkey bridges. Our 9 year old daughter is now inspired to work in animal conservation and she loved learning so much! This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Costa Rica!

Wonderful sanctuary! The founder, Victoria, and her staff work tirelessly for these animals that have been injured or abused. When the animals are back to good health they place them back into their natural habitat. They have howler monkeys, porcupine, badger, birds and many others. The educational part of the tour was well put together and informative. Be aware it’s a moderate walk, though the stairs through the tour are many and if you’re slightly out of shape like this gringo, it can be challenging. Kudos for the work they do!

A bit difficult to find, look for the sign with the monkey face. I believe it’s green. But so worth the adventure getting there! Our tour guide was Mauricio and he was very informative, friendly, and personable. IAR is doing so much good work in the Nicoya peninsula and beyond. Please do take a moment to come support their organization. The tour allows you to get to view some of the birds, howler monkeys, squirrels, ducks, etc that they are rehabilitating.
Angelica Garrison — Google review
I had no idea that one of the greatest causes of death and injury for monkeys is touching exposed electric transmission wires that are not shielded or insulated. These folks nurse the injured back so that they can rejoin their troop. They also keep data on this problem so that specific trouble spots can be identified and prioritized for upgrades that might prevent future injuries or death.
Hugh Conway — Google review
The people here do care about animals to get healthy and back into wilderness. Some animals are not anymore able to get into the jungle and get a forever home. The fee for entry and getting information and seeing the creatures from monkeys to colorful birds and parrots is a good investment for the nature. I respect this type of work a lot.
M D Kaiser — Google review
Our experience at the International Animal Rescue was both educational and impressive. The dedicated staff members are amazing. This is a must do if you are ever in Nosara. They have helped so many animals through rescue and rehabilitation. They are also involved in preventing new injuries through education and intervention. La Feria - Nosara Market

Mentioned on
Market
La Feria - Nosara Market is a local market that offers a variety of essentials, including produce, quality meats, cheese, wine, and artisan crafts. The market has been improving with more vendors joining in. Visitors can find organic products, handmade food dishes, fresh fruits and vegetables, vegan options, dairy products, quality fish, and much more. Additionally, there are recommendations for a nearby restaurant offering a wide range of local and international food at good prices.
It’s getting better as more and more vendors join sometimes the offer is pretty sparse, though a lot of food vendors and quality ceramics and hammocks for example. We come every Saturday because it’s always something new to see the plants are great cooked food is good. Fruits and vegetables are supposedly organic and really variety and colorful. My fave stands are they’ve soaps, Lu’s ceramics, gorgotea flowers and just a general variety of artisan crafts. Oh and the Pipas! National holidays are really fun to have live music and everybody dresses with the Chonete and the Tico colors and it really is a nice sort of provincial kind of feeling to it. Drop by and enjoy local flavor in a town that caters mostly to foreigners it’s refreshing.

Excellent spot for views and happy hour! You really can’t get a more beautiful view to watch the sunset, their glass viewpoints are incredible. Their drinks are also quite good. To be honestly, we put this spot in the mix of a “restaurant tour” and we didn’t eat anything.
Roya Habibi — Google review
The breakfast included stale fruit salad, orange juice (from a bottle, not fresh) was the only juice option (even though there are fresh fruit juices served at other meals and at the pool bar), and a couple of stale cookies/pastries (this was all served to everyone without needing to order it). The omelet was barely edible as there seemed to be more (pretty much raw) onions in it than eggs. For a restaurant with such an amazing view and ambiance and attached to such a wonderful hotel, the breakfast is an embarrassment. We had prepaid for it and yet ended up going to other places in Nosara to eat breakfast.

Do not eat here on a holiday. We arrived at the hotel on Christmas Day and made the mistake of eating the set menu for dinner. It was the driest most flavorless fish, as well as a bland warm tuna tartare and a cauliflower gratin with a congealed cream sauce. I think normally the food is fine based on reviews but they clearly premade this meal and left it in warmers to dry out and go stale. Worst USD$75 I’ve spent in a long time.

This place is otherworldly beautiful. To sit in a heated infinity pool overlooking a beach with crashing waves and the treetops of a jungle… who does that?? It was pure luxury!! The staff were all helpful and kind (thank you Valentina for the tour!). Rooms were large and comfortable. Lots of animals around, which I loved (an iguana was living in the tree outside our room, monkeys here and there, and a family of raccoons visited me by the pool one night after dark). The beach isn’t really accessible by walking but there are plenty of free shuttles. Plus there’s a nature preserve connected to the property that’s great for hiking. We came here at the end of our honeymoon to finish with some pampering. It was good, but there were a few things that should be better, and of course, when you're paying highly for something, it will be judged to a higher standard. The food was very good, and very expensive, yet the service wasn't always great. On a place like this I would expect water to always be filled, for both plates to be taken at the same time, not one before the other and just to overall be a little more attentive. The main issues when staying here was that people who were not paying to stay at the hotel, could come and use the facilities. We saw several couples have a drink then come into the pool area and take pictures for their Instagram and even a family who used the facilities, allowing several children to be running around screaming all afternoon. We then booked dinner in town and saw that family going to the hotel they were actually staying at. For me that takes away from all those people who have paid to be there, and we could have easily stayed at a hostel down the road and come and spent the whole day here after buying a diet coke! Overall, really good and great staff.

Beautiful location. Fantastic service. Gorgeous views. Delicious food. For a luxurious time in Nosara, this place can’t be beat. Spent a week here with my family last week, 2 daughters aged 5 and 8 and wife. Pools are well kept. Rooms cleaned perfectly. Staff super attentive and nice. If we asked any questions they were sure to follow up, even bringing us aloe Vera in the middle of the night for sun burn. During food service, our glasses were constantly filled with coffee and water. My wife took a yoga class and had a great time, she raved about the instructor. I would come again if my bank account said so. We’re not really resort people, but I’ve stayed in my fair share and this place is in the top 5 for location views and service. Most people who come to a tropical place and complain about bugs or kids at a large hotel (c’mon they have adult only pools/areas here) will probably always be upset about something…I’d ignore reviews of that kind for this awesome place

First of all, if you are wondering about roads coming here. If your taking the road that has a turn off at Santa Cruz to go on the coast, it’s all gravel. Took us about 2.5 hours from Liberia airport. If you are coming from San Jose or Liberia, the paved road goes through nicoya, down south than back up east, which is mostly paved. Our experience on gravel was very exciting though, if you want an adventure… they take similar times, the paved is much faster, speed wise, but much longer distance wise… We enjoyed our stay at Lagarta lodge so much! The view, weather, accessibility, service and especially food exceeded expectations and made for a very relaxing time. It did have to normal problems that you could expect from not a full service hotel though. The food, especially breakfast, was excellent. The breakfast has options for a fantastic tico and some nice smaller options as well as savory foods when you are less hungry. The lunch options were more basic but tasted very delicious. The dinner was also very good but I’d recommend eating out at the variety or unique restaurants in Nosara. The room was beautiful, everything layer out well with just enough areas for storage and charging, but not cramped. The bathroom and shower were beautiful with the view out onto the beach. The balcony had two chairs and a sofa bed were I watched the rain and lightning at night for hours as well as monkeys in the morning. The area itself is really nice. All spread out by these elaborate pathways through the jungle not keeping any two villas too close (if you are in that area). We saw monkeys, lizards, Iguanas, all types of funny bugs, crickets etc… There are 4 pools… one which is shown in most pictures, is the main infinity pool looking out over the beach and forest. There is a smaller pool, a few steps up from there which acts as a naturally heated pool which is warm, but not hot. Than even farther up is a small, adults only jacuzzi. The main pool is really nice and has a beautiful view, it is not very deep but adequately large to do a little swimming. I found that there was quite allot of debris and things in the water, sometimes hard to see underwater and tests the cleanliness of the pool. The pool higher up we spent the most time in. It was always clean and few people were there, and provided a relaxing experience during the day. The jacuzzi was often filled with tree debris so wasn’t used very much, and also because it was already very hot out. The last pool was a bit confusing. It is on a path only accessible from one path. It leads to allot more, recently developed rooms and a large pool centered around a bar at the end. It has allot of seating with a good, but not great view. The pool was completely empty all the time, probably due to it’s bee problem. There were bees swarming the whole perimeter and drinking out of the water, not very pleasant. The nature reserve was really nice. We took the full loop all the way to the creek and back. We saw a variety of scenery but not as many animals. We recommend going early, 5:30 being the best time to spot monkeys as well as beat the heat. It took us about an hour and a half total and was easy-moderate in the heat. The whole experience made for a relaxing time. Our three days here felt like a week

Bad roads bring good people it says on the sign outside and the roads are worse than bad but the hotel is beautiful. When you first walk into the top level restaurant the view takes your breath away and no photo would ever do it justice. The rooms are large, comfortable and have stunning views. The service is of the "nothing is too much trouble" type and the food is just outstanding... The fruit tastes like it was picked to order and the fish is so fresh, it's delicious. Beautiful hotel, the restaurant at sundown has an amazing view of the jungle, beach, and ocean and is not to be missed. Get a reservation! Staff was friendly. Did the turtle tour and night hike, both were super fun and informative. Hotel shuttle is convenient if you don’t have a car.

A mandatory stop over. A beautiful view of the whole of playa Nosara. The hotel has a restaurant and in the upper part of the restaurant you have the best view. We did not stay at the hotel. But a quick stop over to check the views. Great for sundowners.

Beautiful rooms with lovely views out to the beach you can't use due to bothbits proximity to wild life and strong currents. The strong current issue is true along the coast so only good for a paddle. A small but functional pool with two separate jacuzzi areas. These are self filtering with no chemicals used. Black vultures come down to the pool to drink it so that's an experience. All meals were good. Menu only changes slightly between lunch and dinner, I would personally recommend the steak. Breakfast menu is good. Road access to hotel is very bumpy, but if you're here for a while that's just part of life in CR. Around the place you will find some of th bigger animals like howler monkeys and cotis wander around particularly at night and early morning. We did see one small snake and several large spiders. Excellent air conditioning in rooms. If you are poolside a barman will bring you drinks. All in all a very relaxing time here.

Absolutely wonderful and relaxing stay in Nosara at the Hotel Lagarta Lodge. The rooms are lovely. Ours was a family room with a large deck and beautiful view of the ocean and nature preserve. Loved waking up to see the sun rise and at night watching the sunset at the pool and dining area. Our teens enjoyed their room which was in the same unit. We shared a bathroom that was well appointed for four people. Shower was awesome. Beds super comfortable and air conditioner worked well. Thankfully it was quiet. There were two pools to enjoy and one warm hot-tub which was comfortable. I wouldn’t have liked it too hot with the 80 degree weather. At the pools i loved that you could always find a lounge chair. Even for the whole family. Food was very good and fresh. Loved the coffee. Perfectly brewed. And lovingly served. Breakfast was nice. As well as Chrismas Eve dinner. We ate lunch and dinner out as we wanted to explore the Nosara and Guiones area. Hotel staff helped us adjust reservations as needed. Service was friendly and outstanding. A shout out to Juan Carlos and others at the restaurant. They were always eager to help. Front desk service was also very friendly. We received great service from everyone especially Ernesto and Lukas. They helped is with excursions, directions and suggestions. Always with a smile. Overall this is an absolutely gorgeous hotel with a true Costa Rican feel in an incredible location. It’s a nice place to relax and unwind as well as perfectly situated to visit the surrounding area. Though it was at full capacity we received excellent service and didn’t feel overrun. My only recommendation for the hotel is to figure out a way to manage the Whats App communication system for their guests. It may be good to have someone follow through with questions and needs. Sometimes we got an immediate response and other times we don’t know if the message was going to receive a response or action.

This is a great family restaurant. Fairly priced with good food. Twice a day the airplanes come in and it is pretty loud for 1 minute or two.

Great open air seating, Tico family owned restaurant with simple but delicious food. The fresh whole red snapper and the lobster are fantastic. Definitely will eat there again.

One of the best meals we have had in the area. The tuna was out of this world. Lots of ceiling fans so we were very comfortable. Casual but super clean. Service was excellent. Can't wait to go back.

Wonderful Red Snapper and ceviche. Reasonable prices on food and drink.

The 2 for the price of 1 cocktails were fruity and boozy and the "chips" with guacamole were actually french fries and not tortilla chips as we were expecting but still yummy with the garlicky guacamole. The lobster special was humungous. I was expecting one lobster but was served two and they were buttery and delicious. The mashed potatoes and cooked vegetables were also well seasoned. Great to have a vegetarian/vegan option that was not a "Beyond Meat" burger patty. My husband ordered the vegan burger (portabello mushroom) which came on a nice bun and with a flavourful side salad. The only down side of our experience was that the running water was not working in the taps outside the washrooms so the server put out a big bowl of water for people to wash their hands. Very friendly service and reasonable prices compared to other restaurants with similar menu items. Would highly recommend this place.

Celajes was so delicious that I had to go back two days later! The food was super fresh and very reasonably priced. I really enjoyed the chicken and rice, mahi mahi casado, and passionfruit cheesecake. Yum!!! The staff was very friendly and patient as I tried practicing my Spanish when ordering. Do yourself a favor and check them out!

Honestly, every part of our meal for our family of 4 was super flavorful and felt nourishing. My bread for the portabello burger (im a vegetarian and this was the first porto burg ive found) was handmade and really great consistency. Get the coffee martini!! Totally worth, will be back again 🤤

It was a great recommendation from a local when we asked about options for eating Costa Rican dishes in a mostly international cuisine environment, the service and the atmosphere are great. Their octopus ceviche was amazing, if you're in the area give them a try, if you fly to Nosara make it your first place to visit, they are located right next to the airport.

Restaurant
Rancho Tico is a remarkable dining establishment that offers delectable, freshly prepared cuisine. While the service may not be the swiftest, it is well worth the wait as patrons can enjoy socializing until their food arrives. This restaurant is renowned for its exceptional Arroz con Pollo dish, which many consider to be the best in town.
Stopped in for dinner while traveling thru. Great food, great service, great experience! Give them a try when you are closed by!!

AMAZING FRESH FOOD, not the fastest service, but worth the wait as we were socializing until the food arrived! Also told that it's got the best Arroz con Pollo. Dishes below are Camarones Ajillo(garlic) with a white wine butter sauce for dipping & the Jalapeno Carne... Both Delicious!

Food wasn’t great or warm, took two and a half hours to get our food and 20 minutes to pay. We did have a large group which can be difficult but we were the only ones in the restaurant the entire time.
