Arusha

Arusha is a city in East Africa's Tanzania, located at the base of volcanic Mt. Meru. It's a gateway to safari destinations and to Africa's highest peak, 5,895m Mt. Kilimanjaro, lying some 100 kilometers northeast. To the west lies Serengeti National Park, home to wildlife including lions, rhinoceros, giraffes and leopards. Annual migrations feature huge herds of wildebeests crossing its plains.

Specialty Museums
The Cultural Heritage Centre is a remarkable establishment that combines an African art gallery, a jewelry shop featuring precious stones, and a global restaurant. The beautiful building houses thousands of exquisite African artworks that are well-organized and accessible via wheelchair to all levels. In addition to the impressive exhibits, there are also two restaurants serving delicious cuisine. This center offers visitors souvenirs, art, culture and history in one location and requires ample time to fully appreciate all it has to offer.
Such a beautiful place with stunning artwork. It took me about 45 minutes just to skim through most of the art but I loved every bit of it. Inside, it spirals up each level and offers thousands of pieces of beautiful African artwork. The building is also lovely and there are a couple of nice coffee shops in there!
Jana Salame — Google review
This museum is the largest in Africa with a wide array of paintings and artwork from local and other African Countries. I was absolutely blow away by the collection and history behind each piece. Entrance is free and there are plenty of shops and restaurantson the grounds! A definite must while in Arusha.
Effay K — Google review
Enter through the gift shop...literally...but the real treasure here is in the Cultural Center behind. The basement is so jammed with Zanzibar chests, doorways and canvases it is hard to navigate. Pieces on the upper floors are easier to appreciate with a more space around them. Masks and sculpture are the highlights here. The cafe is good for a calm bite away from the frenetic front street.

Such a beautiful and breathtaking place filled with all kinds of feels from across Africa. If you're a lover of art, do give this place a visit and you won't regret it. Absolutely stunning 😍

Souvenirs, art, culture and history in one place. Well organized art gallery and the good thing is it has a wheelchair access to all its floors. The gallery has 2 restaurants and food is available. You need some ample time to enjoy the gallery.
Patrick Hozza — Google review
This gallery will overwhelm your sight sense because of its massive-ness in size. Colours come alive as you walk around, through the beautiful paintings, unique carvings & architectural design.
Shishi — Google review
This spot has some impressive architecture and an amazing collection of African Art, not just from Tanzania. However, it's important to remember that it's not a museum; many of the art pieces are up for sale. There's a wealth of information available about the history and the artists behind the pieces. But be prepared, the prices are steep, although the quality is undoubtedly high. A heads-up about the sales approach here: it can feel a bit pushy. For instance, we had a salesperson stick right by our side the whole time, which was pretty uncomfortable. When we moved to a different section and encountered another salesman, the first one got upset, even shouted something in Swahili to the other guy, and then continued to follow us. It felt like we were assigned to him for our entire visit. On a positive note, the paintings in the art gallery are truly epic, albeit way out of our budget. We ended up browsing through all the artifacts and then headed to the Masai market to find more budget-friendly items.
Hareesh Gottipati — Google review
Excellent exhibits and amazing artwork reflecting the African heritage! Very friendly staff and helpful information provided around each artwork displayed in the museum! Loved the musicians present at the entrance of the museum!
G J — Google review
No bargaining (which I prefer), large assortment of products sold. Anything you want to buy as souvenir they should have. Prices are ok, but somethings maybe cheaper elsewhere in smaller shops. Gorgeous art gallery and sculptures too..
Clement Neo — Google review
Impressive offer of what I would deem good to excellent quality souvenirs and art. The whole 'cultural'/arts center is worth a visit. However, I am not a good reference when it comes to the purchase of 'souvenirs' as I stopped years ago buying them.
Mario Eichenberger — Google review
We had the most amazing experience at the Cultural Heritage Center in Nairobi Kenya. We saw a culture show where they had several Kenyan tribes perform dance, singing, and music program. We were able to eat authentic vegetarian Kenyan food at their restaurant. Seeing all the various types of villages of their tribes was also a unique experience. In addition, we were able to purchase some traditional Kenyan ornaments, jewelry, and clothing from the tribal people's stalls over there.
Bina Soni — Google review
Wow, just amazing. So many art pieces!!! A must visit. You can also buy a lot of art here. It is not cheap btw. Also ther is great restaurant Next to entrance of center.

Located in the heart of Arusha, Tanzania. Cultural Heritage Center is a 4 storey gallery where you learn the history of different tribes in Tanzania. The art showcases their way of life, their community, beliefs and history. It's also an art gallery where you can purchase your souvenir and art. It's free to tour the gallery, no queue and spacious for large groups.

IF YOU WANNA EXPERIENCE INTENSE CULTURE IN ONE BUILDING, THIS IS THE RIGHT PLACE. IT SHOWED ME A LOT ABOUT TANZANIA AND HOW DEEP AND RICH THEIR CULTURE IS….ITS ALL FREE MAKE SURE YOU OFFLOAD EVERYTHING YOU HAVE IN YOUR BRAIN SO THAT YOU LEARN MORE ONCE YOU IN THE BUILDING 💕🩷ENTERING THERE FEELS LIKE VVIP TREATMENT, THEY MAKE BEATS AND SING SONGS AS YOU GET IN…..I CANT EXPLAIN ENOUGH. FOR ALL MY IG BADDIES, CHARGE YOUR PHONES AND TAKE SOME CUTE PHOTOS

Amazingly well built souvenir shop and art gallery. The architecture design rivals some of the best museums I've been to anywhere in the world. A multi-story art gallery building with half levels throughout and a central stairwell and open atrium. Definitely a must visit if you love to see fine African art.
Victor Wang — Google review
Incredible place! There are 2 restaurants, 4 floors of shopping in the mail building, 3 or so other huts for shopping, a huge 4 floor art gallery and bathrooms. There are sculptures outside, the grounds are well kept, the bathroom clean and the food choices amazing! I didn’t take many pictures as I wasn’t sure I was allowed to in the gallery. The employees are attentive, but not pushing or following around. They left me alone to do my shopping which was a definite change from the Maasai market! This is the place to buy your tanzanite!
Tiffany N — Google review
A lot of variations of African Arts. Some are just imitations. But some artworks are very creative and genuine.
Eben Yoon — Google review
Great place to see and buy many of the crafts of Tanzania if you don't have access or time to buy from the locals. Pictures are of metal sculptures outside.

Gain insight into the mystery and scarcity of tanzanite before exploring a store offering high-quality jewelry pieces at affordable prices.
Wonderful experience!! A certified place to buy Tanzanite.. remember to collect the bills, duty free paper & certificate!!

I came to visit the free museum and ended up falling in love with a brown tanzanite I later put on a ring! The store has some beautiful pieces of jewellery and stones. The staff is very kind and patient, and doesn't push you to buy anything but is very helpful if you have an idea in mind and would like to find something suiting you
Roxanne Hubesch — Google review
Very interesting insights to the tanzanite world, a precious gemstone found only there in Arusha region. Worth a visit, good invested hour; no sales hassles, friendly and professional
Christian Kaelin — Google review
Junaid Khan and his "TEAM" of coworkers were AWESOME in helping me with my ring creation/purchase experience. I can't count how many emails were sent back and forth. He/they were the MOST patient human beings with me in this whole process from inquiring about stones down to setting creations. This has been by far the BEST shopping experience of my life online! I will definitely consider another purchase in the future! Thank you!!! Jennifer Ozark, Alabama

Anyone who is in Arusha or nearby and is interested in beautiful things must definitely come to Tanzanite Experience. The Tanzanite gemstones are a dream, the staff is very friendly and patient to show you the gemstones, the museum and the video that explains the Tanzanite is interesting. A big compliment to the staff and the manager, we will definitely see each other again next year. Basuma and Thomas

I had a wonderful experience with The Tanzanite Experience. As a lover of fine-jewellery, I knew I wanted to invest in a special piece during my trip and did a fair amount of research before visiting. I stopped by the museum in Arusha which was also great, before taking a look at their loose stone collection. I found a stone I fell in love with, and after chatting with my wonderful sales associate Joy, I decided to go ahead with having a bespoke necklace made. I was able to meet with the jeweler who would craft my piece, and also access the stone for myself and was super impressed with the quality. Despite it being over Easter the team were super accommodating, ensuring they understood the exact details of the of the piece I wanted, and being able to meet me at Kilimanjaro Airport with the finished piece. Joy kept me updated via Whatsapp through out the process, sharing pictures of my piece as soon as it was completed which I loved. Since receiving my necklace I have worn it everyday - I am so happy with the quality of the piece. I was super specific about little details I wanted and they executed each of these perfectly. If you're looking to invest in Tanzanite or Tsavorite jewellery I couldn't recommend them more!
Katie Braham — Google review
Eunice was a perfect guide! My husband and I had a great time, first watching the video and then listening to her explanations and the tour she gave us of the site. She made our experience very enjoyable, and in the end I bought my Tanzanite, best souvenir of Tanzania!
Constanza Rodríguez Garrido — Google review
Guide at the museum was very competent and explained everything in details. Cool aspect of the place is that they have replicated the mine shaft inside the museum/shop. The place also offers complementary drinks
Rolands Abolins — Google review
This small tanzanite museum offered an interesting video and a small replica of a mine. There is of course tanzanite for sale. The selection is a bit small but there are a lot of loose stones if you want to have a piece of jewelry made just for you. They also have unpolished stone pieces made by the Masai women for a reasonable price.
Happy Ox — Google review
Very friendly, professional, knowledgeable and patient staff - my wife and I spent a lot of time here shopping for amazing Tanzanite - beautiful stones that come from this beautiful country of Tanzania. The store offers a very informative video and in person presentation on how the stones are mined, cut and polished. Fun experience too. Jackline who helped us with our purchases was amazing. Very inspirational person with great taste! Thank you Jackline for helping us with our choices. Definitely recommend visiting whether you want to buy or just get information on Tanzanite.
Max L — Google review
It was a great experience. Many interesting infos about the Tanzanite as well about the company itself. Fredy did a great job as our tourguide. Highly recommend!
Patrick P. — Google review
Very nice experience and great to see the Tanzanites. Fredy was taking us around and did an excellent job. Can highly recommend!
Nicola Stadelmann — Google review
It is really worth the stop if you want to learn about Tanzanite! The jewelry they have is beautiful and I LOVE the Masai woman's collection - it’s less expensive and sooo beautiful with the raw form of tanzanite. Joyce was an amazing guide and great at explaining everything! She was clear and kept the tour interesting without it feeling too long. I also appreciated how no one was pushy and there wasn’t pressure to purchase anything. I definitely recommend if you are in Arusha! I added a photo of the Masai collection because you really can’t find anything like it at other tourist stores. Everything is duty free so that’s another plus!

Great museum. Extremely interesting. Absolutely loved it.
Timothy Conrad — Google review
The Building is definitely historical and has different sections but the maintaince of the building and exhibitions could do with some more investment/upkeep. The photography exhibition on the tribes and the wildlife is extensive. Its a good introduction of the different tribes in Tanzania. The natural history museum section is cool to see but its a bit cramped together. Overall its a good place to go to get some overview. I did however feel that the area dealing with colonial history seemed to represent a one sided sentiment the positivity of colonialism.

Nice place with a lot of details about the pre history, past history, current history and flora na fauna found in Tanzania. It's worth your time

Nice waterfall and easy to reach. Keep in mind that all other pictures here mostly show other waterfalls! Keep going the small path once you reach the border to the Forrest and it’s approx 15min more to reach it. You will find a small security post which asked for 20kTZS (p.P) to pass but we just moved on missing and sign it price list there to have a reference. Go down to stairs and it’s not to miss. Nice walk in between the daily life beside the road to there and no guide is needed for this.

Festo Tarimo — Google review
When in Arusha, with spare time on hand, go there. You will have to pay and you will have to put up with a bunch of "guides" insisting to show you the waterfall. Even declining the "offer" they will tag along. It's not a spectacular waterfall, but nice, lends itself to taking nice pictures. You can take a dip in the freezing water should you wish.
Manie Conradie — Google review
Amazing place to hike! It’s a tougher hike than we thought and we realised we should’ve left in the morning instead of the beginning of the afternoon! Also, make sure you have money on you, to pass through the village! A bit dangerous at some point but once you’re there it’s magical!

Le Patio was once a force to be reckoned with... in pastries in Arusha. Food too was great....they had these classic burgers that one would always just go back for more. Their pastry chef left and now it's a sort of happening place on Saturday and Friday night...a 'club' of some sorts. Entrace is about $5 per person

The Blue Heron Restaurant is a top choice in Arusha, Northern Tanzania, offering delicious food and a relaxed atmosphere. It's known for its excellent pizza and also features an on-site workshop and boutique with unique handmade clothes and other items. This garden restaurant strikes the perfect balance between a lounge bar and family hotspot, making it a must-visit dining destination in the region.
You want tradition? You want a place that makes you sit and wait awhile and forces you to have a conversation with one another as your pizza is cooked to perfection?. I had the best pizza of my life at that time. Since then I have visited this place numerous times and my opinion about this pizza has still not changed.
Barbara Sara — Google review
We stayed in Arusha and wanted a good place for lunch. We opted for the Blue Heron due to the reviews. And what a lovely place this is: relaxing, tranquil, good and tasty food, good service. We truly enjoyed spending a day there. The decor is very appealing. We were very happy
Joerg Potreck — Google review
Great place to relax on a Sunday. Everything is well spaced out and you won’t feel crowded. There’s plenty of seating options, the view is also amazing and if your lucky, you get to see Meru and Kilimanjaro together. The food was excellent! We really enjoyed the pizza!
Robert — Google review
The Blue Heron is the best place for a coffee, or a pizza, salad, a meal or a chat. Not to forget the food is absolutely amazing but also, you get the urban chic feel as if you just finished a safari but the level of comfort and style at the Heron is so relaxing. It encapsulates what we miss in humanity sometimes, which is a combination of connection to ourselves, the elements, eachother and amazing food. I will absolutely be back. The style is unique and always changing. The design incorporates the living world and leaves one with a sense of wonder and awe. The fact the Schwari is right there makes it the most ideal dining and shopping experience.

There is something about the peace and quiet at Schwari/blue heron restaurant. It's got a beautiful view of the bypass and the greenery in between is very calming to just look at while sipping on some juice. Went for early dinner, they had moved from the city to a much bigger location. You can see Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro on a clear day. Their specialty is authentic Italian pizza as well as more modern pizzas and a few other dishes for those not interested in pizza. They have alcohol and non alcoholic drinks (which I really enjoyed). The speed of service was quite good given that its freshly made and the staff are super friendly. Will definitely be going here more often!

Do not take tours that they offer. The manager/owner Arpakwa is dishonest. He lied about what was included in the trip and park fees. When we found out at the tour site, we had to turn back without doing the tour. He still forced us to pay nearly $100 as we had no other way of returning to the hotel! It was the worst experience in our entire days in Tanzania.

Super fun night dancing with option for two dofferent dance floors and djs. The night started with some dinner around 9pm chicken with coconut sauce it was really tasty. There was a live band playing music with swahili and english songs. Then they play some music with a dj to mix up the beat. There was reggaeton, latin, american, british, and other assorted music. Overall a fun place to go for chill fun night. There was even an option for karaoke and behind the restuarant area there was an artist selling painting and a shop with some clothing. A wonderful place to visit on your african vacation or if you are a local it was mixed company.

Thank you to the team for a lovely evening. A beautiful restaurant with great ambience.

Super reasonably priced too, we over ordered for the 3 of us so we had lots of tasty leftovers to take home for the next day, as well as cocktails, water and dessert and we were amazed at the price when we got the bill! Definitely great value for what you pay and we will be back next time we visit Arusha for sure! The prawn stuffed chicken wings and half duck were to die for - a must have if you visit!

I am from NYC and this is definitely one of the best Chinese food I’ve ever had. Everything I tried was absolutely delicious and fresh. The ambiance of the restaurant was really nice and the wait staff were wonderful and accommodating. The owner is also very nice and humble, and really cares about his customers enjoying the experience. My partner and I loved it so much that we came back again the next night! Highly recommend!

Very nice waiter! Food was good, but needed more flavor. The prices were also very good. Definitely the best Chinese restaurant in Arusha

The highlight of the meal was getting to speak with the owner. He's an Arusha local and lives/works closely with his business. Plus, his story is fascinating! I recommend stopping in just to meet Reese. The Passion Fruit drink was delicious and I plan to go back just for that. I also had the garlic chicken with spring rolls. Sometimes chefs make food the same way all the time, but theirs was happy to accommodate my spice-averse food preferences. Give em' a try!

It is the best Chinese restaurant I have ever visited anywhere in the world. Fresh, tasty, quick and good service every single time! During the pandemic many restaurants went down in quality, Chinese whispers stepped up their game. Very impressed. Just join PIKI now so we can get more of this!😄

Food was divine. Very professional customer service. And it was lovely to meet the owner Reece. We ordered the whole steam fish in light soya sauce - yum. Highly recommend this restaurant.

I had dinner at Chinese Whispers yesterday evening. The restaurant is located in a building complex which seemed safe after dark - there is a security guard and a supermarket on the ground floor. We were welcomed by our lovely host Asha, who was a very attentive waitress during the entire evening. She recommended us dishes on the basis of our likes and dietary restrictions. There are multiple vegetarian options and also combos, for the case that you do not want a huge portion. I had a vegetarian dish consisting of vegetables and tofu in a bean sauce which was delicious. The ambiente in the restaurant was also nice.

The best meal we had during our week-long trip here. Love the tofu in chili sauce and deep fried squid. Very friendly and accommodating owner and servers.

George's Tavern is a unique dining spot in Arusha that offers high-quality meals with a stunning view. The restaurant features a menu with a blend of Nepalese and Indian cuisine, curated by Chef Shashidhar Kharel, boasting 20 years of culinary expertise. We came here for dinner shortly after arriving in Arusha. The ambience is lovely - it has an outdoor lounge vibe that really makes you feel relaxed and ready to eat/drink. We sat at the bar and had a great time chatting with the (very friendly) staff. Our food was also really tasty and pared well with drinks. Check it out!

Probably one of the better dining experiences in town. I just didn't receive the dish I ordered, so I cannot provide ANY feedback on the food. I was part of a group and had to eat food from other dishes and even with reminders nothing changed. I had ordered the Beef Choma and assume that it would have been good. The music was almost inaudible and added nothing to the ambiance. Honestly, whatever I tasted off other people's orders was good and felt unlucky to have received little to no attention from the wait staff even after providing reminders and asking repeatedly. I usually review positively and love to support businesses that are good in service, in the least. The fact that no one cared that I didn't receive my food and promptly cancelled my specific order after my reminders because everyone else was done eating tells me of the quality of the service. The least that could have been done is George himself could apologize; who was in attendance that evening.

It's Grecian, or seemed to remind one of Greece a lot. Located right in the heart of Arusha, neat and fairly priced too, great value for money. Everything we had here was delicious. Portions are generous. It gets really packed with tourists in the evenings. Best to come just before 6pm when the tourists start coming in droves. Sweet tooth? Try the brownies!

Great food, excellent service. George’s Special Burger holds it’s own against any Hipster London burger joint. Value for money excellent. Definitely worth a visit. Asante Sana.

A very cozy restaurant. We had a chicken souvlaki pita and a pepperoni pizza and it was very much a good meal. The pizza crust was unfortunately quite doughy and soft, and while I really appreciate that it was not a thin pizza crust it was just not cooked well enough. The pizza toppings could have had more flavour, and it was a bit bland. Perhaps an unlucky experience for me as I see the pizzas are quite well reviewed here. The chicken souvlaki was tender and tasteful. So all in all I definitely recommend coming here. Edit April 2024: Came back again and ordered pizza again, and this time the pizza dough was perfect 😍

Great central spot in Arusha. The restaurant is situated in a beautiful patch of nature in the city. You can observe monkeys and enjoy the trees while eating a lovely meal. They have a diverse drinks and food menu. Highly recommend a visit to anyone looking for Greek, Mediterranean, and Western Foods. They also have a small selection Tanzanian food options as well.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at the beloved George's Tavern restaurant, and I must say, it exceeded all my expectations. With over a decade of service, this gem has truly mastered the art of crafting exceptional dishes that leave your taste buds dancing with joy. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, making me feel right at home. The menu boasted a wide variety of mouthwatering options, from classic pizzas to juicy burgers, ensuring there was something to satisfy every craving. The pizza was one of the I have had in a long time. The crust was perfectly crispy on the outside and delightfully chewy on the inside, topped with a generous amount of flavorful sauce and a tantalizing blend of fresh ingredients. Each bite was an explosion of flavors that kept me coming back for more. The burgers were equally impressive. Juicy, perfectly seasoned patties were sandwiched between soft, toasted buns and adorned with a delectable array of toppings. The combination of flavors and textures was simply divine, leaving me with a happy and satisfied palate. The restaurant's commitment to quality ingredients and attention to detail truly shone through in every dish. It's no wonder they have stood the test of time, garnering a loyal customer base. If you're looking for a memorable dining experience, this pizza and burger restaurant is an absolute must-visit. Five stars, without a doubt!

Great atmosphere! Very nice place, centrally located with a wide variety of food options. Serve local beer (Twinga). Nice outside garden for during the day if you want to enjoy the sun. We went there twice in a week!

I always think of this place as a little hidden heaven in the middle of Arusha. The place is located in the "uzunguni" suburbs and it is surrounded by a lot of greenery. I tried their Margarita pizza and it was super. The sauce and crust were just right. I also ordered their pepper steak with fries and it did not disappoint. They even added a complementary salad bowl with feta cheese (My fav). The service was quick and good. Would definitely drop by any time I am in Arusha

It was not a very good experience. Let me start with the food. I ordered the beef choma. It tasted really bad like the meat was not stored properly. I couldn't finish it. The juice I ordered was not prepared in a seperate station as I could taste garlic in it. What I liked was the mchicha and coconut rice. The service. The service was horrible. We were ignored the first 10 minutes. Our waiter came and dropped the menues and left. No greeting no welcome. As he brought food and drinks he did not even ask me for a refill he only asked my friend. My friend confronted him about it. No apology was offered. These waiters need proper service traiming as this is not a good refection of the five star prices on their menu. Atmosphere was okay, a bit on the tacky side but no too horrible. Could be better especially dusting the lights and replcing some shaky chairs. Overall, a disappointment.

Place is very nice and service is very good, however the food wasn’t as expected. I had the vegan moussaka, which I think is way too sweet and should be readjusted in flavors, however big portion and nicely presented. My friend had pizza and left most of it. The cheesecake was ok. We may have been unlucky that maybe they were too busy, but we had much higher expectations and weren’t satisfied at the end.
