Martinique

Martinique is a rugged Caribbean island that’s part of the Lesser Antilles. An overseas region of France, its culture reflects a distinctive blend of French and West Indian influences. Its largest town, Fort-de-France, features steep hills, narrow streets and La Savane, a garden bordered by shops and cafes. In the garden is a statue of island native Joséphine de Beauharnais, first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Jardin de Balata

Mentioned on
Botanical garden
Nature & Parks
The Jardin de Balata is a botanical garden with exotic plants from around the world. It has a treetop walkway and mountain views, and is one of Martiniques best attractions.
What an amazing botanical garden. Even though it's not that big, the entire road towards it and after it feels like it's part of the same place. Lush vegetation, lots of flowers and the view at the end is breathtaking.
Dan Stoicescu — Google review
Gorgeous place to visit! We went with my boyfriend and we had a lovely time there. It felt like we needed more eyes to see everything. So many plants everywhere! The views were amazing. There are some stairs, so some people might find it annoying, but there is a path specially made for people in wheelchairs or families with a baby stroller. Super worth it!
Agostina Arias — Google review
Beautiful garden with an exciting suspension bridge. Very nicely laid out with lots of different flowers. From the cruise port the taxi costs about $40.
Hoschi Blume — Google review
The best activity on the island! Friendly staff, beautiful hanging bridge, the most amazing trees and flowers! Absolutely loved it. Come early so it’s less busy, less hot and you have parking space. Parking is free. Bring water and sunscreen.
Joyce Huys — Google review
DANGEROUS!! Do not use the “bridges” the ropes used are from 2009 and rotten by the years of sun and rain. The park manager ignores my warnings and states the safety is ok. Don’t get me wrong, the garden is beautiful and worth the visit. Safety should be priority number 1 !
Anton Smit — Google review
We had really great time! The entrance is 15€ and it's not time limited. The rope bridge is also included in the entrance fee and the view is amazing! We spent there 2,5 hours and I think it was quite enough. We came around 10am and had no problem to find parking lot. Next to the gardens is delicious restaurant La luciole, we had menu (punch, starter, main dish and desert) for 25€. Recommended :)
Ema — Google review
Absolutely beautiful. Grounds are spectacular. THE botanical gardens in Martinique. Restaurant, gift shop and restrooms. Some handicap accessible routes. Otherwise very hilly. Also has a walking bridge up in the trees.
Stephen Hayes — Google review
For sure the most wonderful bothanical garden ever. The way is structured, the armonized plants, the suspended bridge and the pond, just makes it magnificent.
Lavinia Fernea — Google review
Ideal location if you want to cool down and view a rich local green landscape. There is a bridge that was closed upon our visit. Make sure you buy some special fish food to feed the fish with your kids at the store located at the entrance (when you buy your tickets), that will save you a trip back just to do that during your visit. The kids enjoyed feeding the fish. We personally found some of the paths a bit hazardous for younger kids but it was a memorable visit. Also the only restaurant around closed early and only takes bookings/reservations so be well aware of that.

A popular tourist destination in Martinique, Jardin de Balata is a stunning tropical garden with alluring views everywhere you look. Located north of Fort De France, Balata gardens has countless of tropical plants and palm trees from around the world. You can spend hours visiting the manicured gardens, while taking in the local birds and animals within the lush scenery. A memorable visit and highly recommended!
Lem Jo — Google review
Really enjoyed,it was an amazing trip of garden, never seen before such beautiful and lush green trees 🌴
Sohail Asif — Google review
Beautiful and definitely worth every penny! We had a memorable experience waking around this magnificent botanical garden. It’s a must visit place if you are on Martinique! You can see a variety of flora and the way it has been structured is great for visualization. We went just after the rain had stopped so colors were beyond vibrant! If you watch closely you can also see several lizards and Kolibris scurrying through the garden. Be sure to check out the rope bridge to get another perspective. We paid 16€ p.p. to enter. Parking space is limited so you may have to park on the side of the road. There’s two spots for this: just before reaching the garden and about 300m after passing the garden.
Kat Klein — Google review
Took the local bus here and we were absolutely blown away! Such good forest bathing. So serene. The lightning bug cafe next door is incredible too as is the little hike to get to a local waterfall nearby. The perfect day on a gorgeous island!
Katie May Boyle — Google review
I greatly enjoyed my visit to the gardens today with my family. A wide variety of plants, flowers, and trees to see. Many variety have signs explaining what they are and where they're from. Though built on the side of a hill, the walk around the gardens is easy and doesn't require any special footwear, I did it in sandals. This is a great spot for photos!
Dana Hyde — Google review
Great spot to visit when on Martinique. Great views, clean and quiet gardens. They have some dining options which we didn’t try, but we did feed the fish which was only 0.5 euros and the kids loved it! Highly recommend when visiting this island.
Jim Alford — Google review
extremely fun. took about 2 hours to get around it. it's pretty easy to get here from Fort-de-France, just use the 25 bus, though it might disappear from time to time. the whole garden is beautiful and the most fun part are the rope ladders and bridges, you can see most of the part from up there. it's a lot of fun!
A W — Google review
Place is amazing. So many different types of flowers, trees, plants ... that I never knew existed. The place even hase a little pond with golden fish. The garden is really big, and it's built like a path to that every time you turn your head, you see a new wonder. A lot of the plants are imported though, so not all of them are local. Also you can comfortably buy tickets there. Anyway, really recommend this place for nature lovers.
Mia Tsoneva — Google review
Beautiful outdoor garden. Tons of varieties of flowers and plants. Restrooms available for no cost. Gift shop available on site. Would definitely come again if I visit Martinique in the future!
Nick Cahow — Google review
Certainly worth a visit. It's not exactly a botanical garden more a tropical garden with beautiful trees and plants. I would say it's even better than a botanical garden because you're not bothered with all the Latin names of all that grows. There is a wonderful walkway through the treetops. There is a local bus that stops right in front of the entrance.

Distillerie J.M.

Mentioned on
Distillery
Food & Drink
Distillerie J.M. is a renowned distillery in Martinique that offers an impressive and modern exhibition along with tastings. The facility is well-suited for visitors, featuring a self-guided tour of the entire distillation process culminating in a tasting experience. The location itself is beautiful and perfect for group tours like Buggy Quad tours, which offer stunning views and memorable experiences. The staff at Distillerie J.M.
By far the best distillery to visit on the island if you want to find out more about the making of rum! Loved the thoughts, the explanations, and the attention to detail of the free non-guided tour. Get carried away by the smells of vanilla, tropical flowers, and sugar cane right before you enter the tasting room. Very highly recommended!
Kat Klein — Google review
The unguided tour is excellent. They have an English language pamphlet to guide you. Everything is well marked, and you walk close enough to the equipment to see the rum being made. This is worth a trip to the top of the island.
Caleb Bryant — Google review
Distillerie J.M. One of the most stunning views of a distillery I have ever been to. I could not get enough of the pictures and the location of this distillery. It almost looks like it is at the bottom most part of the volcanic mountain, with a couple of creeks that run through the building. The building is filled with mango trees, beautiful humming birds, and a handful of flowers (which I wish I knew the breeds). They have a very large barrel room where they cast their rum, and the smell for the barrel room is to die for. The tour is a self-walking tour and they have some interactive smell and taste portions of the tour. I do recommend getting a couple of bottles for the trip back home because their rum is good. I highly recommend the XO bottle but they were all good! There is a lot of parking and enough seating for a large group. The entrance to this location can be easily passed if one is not careful. The employees are very nice and welcoming. They do offer some samples so the customer knows what they would like to purchase before making it. Great location, must stop. Cheers Martinique!
David Ortega — Google review
Absolutely gorgeous We went with a group during our Buggy Quad tour and it was amazinggggg. The staff was so welcoming and attentive. I took videos of everything, sadly I can't share those here.
Kyshawna Faucheux — Google review
There’s a lot to like about this place but a general caveat that JM is pretty focused on the rum and less about the extras (art museum, sculpture garden etc)like Clement. That said, the location is beautiful; it’s mountainous with a stream flowing through it. The information inside the facility is well done, especially the “smelling” room where one can smell the different notes that color the various types of rum. We took a personal car tour with David which was absolutely worth the extra money. He was able to share details about the banana and sugar cane crops, as well as information about the manufacturing. My one criticism is that the rum products were really edited down. One can buy more JM varieties in the grocery store versus what one can buy at the distillery. Also, I would have loved if the tasting servers were a little more friendly, but we’ll chalk that up to my limited French and their limited English. A word of advice: if you’re coming from Fort de France, take the “highway” on the west coast of the island. It’s a beautiful drive and further, it’s not as windy, start/stop, up/down as the middle highway.
Keith Hegner — Google review
This distillery is beautifully located and very well set up for visitors with a self guided walking tour through the whole distillery process and with tasting at the end. Very impressive.
Niklas McCoy — Google review
Our first great visit to a distillery on Martinique! The distillery is still active and gives you a glimpse into the production process. The route is well signposted and ends with a tasting at the beautiful bar. Tour is free. Recommended!

Volcano
Nature & Parks
Mt Pelée is a volcanic site renowned for its challenging hiking trails and infamous 1902 eruption. Early arrivals are recommended as parking fills up quickly, with some visitors forced to park along the road. The path is well marked, making it unnecessary to hire a guide or pay any fees. It's crucial to check the weather before hiking to ensure clear views from the top. Visitors are warned not to touch any insects they may come across due to their poisonous nature.
Go early. Free to hike you do not need a guide the path is well marked.bfree to park parking fills us fast then people park along road. Check weather before hike if you want a clear view once at top. DNT touch any insects you may find bc they are poisonous. Bring water and food.

Habitation Clément

Mentioned on
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Originally a sugar plantation, Habitation Clément spans 43 acres and cultivates its own sugarcane. Established in the 18th century as Domaine de l'Acajou to produce sugar cane, it was purchased by Dr. Homere Clément in 1887 who subsequently established a distillery during World War I. His son Charles expanded the estate's reach internationally and made the Clément brand famous.
Very beautiful place for relax and nice pictures as well as for tasting many types of rums. All employees were very nice, polite and all of them were tyring to speak in English. The barman was explaining us the origin and taste of each rum in English which was really nice!
Krist?na Klime?ov? — Google review
This was my absolute favorite. This distillery in a beautiful complex breathes its history on you. Extensive grounds with beautiful gardens, a painting exhibition and a gorgeous house decorated in the traditional Caribbean style of a bygone era. I was fascinated and had to go through the whole thing twice. Their rum tastes wonderful. This distillery is definitely not to be missed!
Honza Neuman — Google review
Worth visiting - beautiful, quiet and full of various plants. We found the small mango fallen from the tree, very fresh and sweet!
Chris G — Google review
Beautiful grounds and excellent museum. While no longer a working rhum plantation, the old facilities are there with an excellent self guided walking tour. The gift shop is very good with a variety of bottle sizes for those of us with import restrictions who want a few options! Prices here were better than at the airport "duty free". The sampling bar had a large variety of options but was crowded with guests intent in sampling everything!
Patrick Verner — Google review
Great place to visit, outdoor walk between beautiful trees and modern art. Indoor tour of the stockage of rum and the old buildings. There is an audio guide available to download on your phone. At the end of the visit there is a souvenir shop with a great selection of Clément rums and possibility to taste different kinds of rum. A full visit takes between 1-3 hours and is well worth the price.
Kenzo Milleville — Google review
Great experience. Lovely gardens and old plantation house to visit. Great Rhum tasting
Henry Foulds — Google review
I don't even know how to start explaining this experience. Let's just say that if you could only visit one rum habitation in Martinique, it would have to be this one. The site is absolutely stunning and combines elements of a gorgeous park, with interactive museum like activities teaching you about rums and the site's history. You can also taste every rum they produce for free (pure or in ti-punch). Absolute must while in Martinique!
Quentin Tigé (이경택) — Google review
Hands down one of the best distillers of rum ever. It’s not just the distillery, there is a huge park, exhibition, museums etc. You can visit the place and book your entire day there. Also alot of well known people, celebrities, politicians were here in the past. This place really has a history. At the end rum tasting and a big shop you can buy your rum.
Ines Blažević — Google review
Not at all inspiring; the old works dead, the barrels just there in a storehouse, the old house not particularly impressive and with out-of-date pictures of Goethe Bush meeting François Mitterrand over 25 years ago!! (And a flouncing commentary to boot)…and a guide plan with exhibits numbered in 500s (even the trees) and some modern BBC art sculptures seriously out of place!! Quite steep for €13 even with a rum tasting thrown in!) Not worth the effort.
Michael Cotton — Google review
Beautiful and huge site. 2 hours minimum unless you are in a total rush. The garden is amazing and the historical production is also nicely presented. At the boutique you can taste as much as you like and there is a lot of stuff to taste. Better choose a driver first!
Ludowig Grodowig — Google review
This is a nice place if you want to spend a few hours at a garden with some arts and / or you interested in the history of rum production. At least as I was here it was not crowded so you can walk by your own and it was also no issue to find a parking lot. They also have a rum store right at this place, since I bought the ticket online I got 10 percent discount.
MyView — Google review
It worth seeing due to magnificent garden with sculptures, lovely old authentic villa, nicely furnished, which will take you back into atmosphere of old times. There is a center of Modern Art here with different exhibitions and also the factory for producing rum where there are represented all stages of rum manufacturing. For 10 euros ticket you will get an audio guide telling the story of this property making high quality rum and also free tasting of drinks at the shop.
Natalia D — Google review
This is a very fun Rum distillery to visit. I am unsure of the cost of the tours or the actual rum, because when I visited it was a holiday for the island and they offered free self-guided tours, and a large amount of samples. Right outside the building there is an amazing outdoor viewing or museum of sculptures and art. The entire building and its surrounding is very well maintained and a great spot to relax. After your tour of the distillery, there is a gallery of art around the corner. I was not expecting to view all of a distillery, art, and a museum of sculptures at this single location. It is a self-guided tour, and they have bulletins that provide information in different languages, including English. My favorite part of the tour was being able to explore the barrel aging buildings. The Barrel rooms gave off an amazing scent that I just want as aftershave! During the venture of the tour, you will learn how they used to make rum with old school style tools, and the way they make rum today. They have a large selection of merchandise, and rum you can purchase. The tasting room is pretty packed, but the bartenders know a variety of languages!
David Ortega — Google review
Very well kept site, great outdoors museum with modern art sculptures which was the star of the visit. The factory itself was not in use in December, probably because the cane hadn't been harvested yet. There was also a very high quality modern art exhibition of the Renault collection in a modern building, quite unexpected for a Caribbean museum. Rum tastings were rather cursory. All in all, aim to spend 2-3 hours here.

The creole restaurant Restaurant La Marine Les Trois îlets in Martinique is situated in a captivating spot with an intriguing setting, offering a moderately pleasing perspective of the harbor. The establishment greets its patrons warmly and provides exceptional cuisine.
Very nice restaurant. Food was delicious and it was served in big portions. The pizzas take long, but they are a must-have. I would recommend this place for anybody visiting Martinique

DO NOT GO HERE. The only good part is the location. Went last night, ordered the white fish with risotto rice. 1) The food is incredibly overpriced, for 15-20 Euros you get a tiny portion that'll half fill you up at most. 2) Servers do not care about you at all, never check on you and have no enthusiasm. 3) Takes 40+ minutes to get your food.
Brian Spivak — Google review
This place was so great to have close by. You never know when something will be closed in Martinique and this place was always a good spot when hungry. The service was great. Right beside the Marina. Thank you for our lovely experience

Quick service and nice waiters but it's not tasty at all. The fish I ordered wasn't fresh and was tasteless. The topping of the pizza that my girlfriend ordered were uncooked. And for last the desert, the crème brûlée was burnt.

Food is okay enough. But unless you are prepared to wait an hour for food, with a surly male server who barely glances at you, find another restaurant!
Diana Nguyen — Google review
The food was cooked thoroughly, we each had a pizza, looked delicious with lots of toppings. The pizza had no flavor. We each used three salt and three pepper packets so it would taste like something. It doesn’t taste bad, it doesn’t taste good, it doesn’t have a flavor, I can see the tomato sauce and the cheese, kebab meat. It was like chewing plain bread.

Where to start.... My wife chose a menu for 36 euros with tomate with mozzarella served with anchovies (what???) Onions (re-what???) and the most tasteless industrial mini-bites of mozarella I have ever tried. Fish was ok although dry. My starter, supposedly a tahiti style ceviche would have shamed any Tahitian, even though the fish was fresh it was tasteless and sad. Overall a very disappointing experience and the poor waiters, however friendly and caring cannot compensate. Get to work people because your location is fantastic and you are wasting it. Maybe I should send you Gordon Ramsay...

It was founded by Jacques du Parquet in 1651 and used to cultivate tobacco and indigo before being converted into a sugar factory. Very nice habitation with a majestic view dominating the ocean. The visit isn't too long, but definitely enjoyable. The tasting is sadly limited to a single consumption (the Port cask is excellent!). Prices are quite cheaper than what you can find in regular supermarkets, so make sure you buy what you need directly at the habitation! Enjoy the visit

It sure is easy to get carried away by the beauty of the estate. You can do a free tour of the distillery. If you want to enter the villa, however, you have to pay a small entrance fee. (Attention: They sold tickets for 5€ and 7€ depending if you want one or two tastings in the end. We chose option 1 and still got to taste more rums. Others did not visit the villa and still got a free tasting.)
Kat Klein — Google review
A nice distillery but the tasting is just trying without explanation. You get the feeling they just do it because they have. Actually they only want to sell their rum.
M. Helbig — Google review
Depaz has a beautiful property. The castle is definitely a highlight, it is stunning. The whole site is well maintained and visitors have it easy to get around. The only disappointment: While most distilleries let you try several different rums, they just give you one single tiny sip to taste. That makes is kind of difficult to decide if it's worth buying a bottle.
Ludowig Grodowig — Google review

Oh, yes! A really beautiful distillery in the heart of Martinique. A beautiful big house and a beautiful factory with a beautiful hiking trail. Their Rum is great!
Honza Neuman — Google review
Very nice place. The road uphill to the distillery is very nice. The distillery and the site are Truly worth the visit. We had the opportunity to try their rum at the shop. The staff is not very friendly, we found them rather rude. The offer the rum trial as if they don’t want clients to buy the rum. One of the positive points is the property’s guidance. You connect to their wifi and have automatically the guide. It is nice to be able to do a self guide of the property in the mobile phone and for free. Only visiting the mansion is chargeable (5 euros). You must buy the ticket at the shop. The property is beautiful, the rums are worth trying, and the restaurant on premise is both delightful and the restaurant’s staff is very friendly, unlike the people at the distillery’s shop.
Juan Francisco Poveda — Google review
Absolutely beautiful grounds, well maintained and an incredible view toward the sea. The tour is free to walk a marked path that takes you around the grounds and certain areas of the distillery. There is a paid tour of the Chateau Depaz but it does not run on certain days, best check with the counter. Depaz Rhum is fantastic and I think offer a different flavour when compared to other distilleries that don't have the advantage of volcanic soil to grow the sugar canne. Definitely one of the distilleries on the island you should visit.
Jonathan Jacobs — Google review
Rum is the drink of choice on the islands and this beautiful distillery was a gem. The drive to get there was fascinating, as you drive by Mt. Pelee, which was alternately shrouded in clouds and sun. The grounds were well kept and appealing, and they had a tasting room and were very eager to let you sample their wares. There was also a well set up tour and some great photo opportunities. Best of all, the main house was magnificent.

Nice ambiance, great staff and fast service. The portions are very generous, so I would recommend to skip the appetizer. We had the marlin and the tuna, both were delicious. A bit expensive.

Good meat but the side dishes were really disappointing with fries that seem cooked in old oil and a salad with only unseasoned lettuce. Drinks were good. The cashier was also not nice as compared with the waiters who were very nice and efficient.

Excellent food, friendly service and a beautiful interior. The menu is reduced to only a few dishes but the quality is superior. Because of the above average prices a location for special occasions.

Amazing meal and such friendly service. My sister and I didn’t speak French well and they were very kind and accommodating. First we were given “fish butter and toast” and it was soooo delicious! The butter was so creamy. For an appetizer we had a lentil coconut soup. It was good but didn’t know our socks off. We split (were looking for a light meal) the lamb, they served it with eggplant (purée? Paste?) and sweet potato purée and it was AMAZING. Best lamb I’ve ever had. Beautiful interior, very comfortable chairs, beautiful table settings, I would absolutely go again!

A more extensive menu would make it possible to appeal to a wider audience. (Original) Très bon accueil. Cadre très agréable. Les plats sont bons et les produits frais locaux bien cuisinés.
