Waterfalls
Roaring Billy Falls, located in New Zealand, is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. The 25-minute return walk to the falls offers a picturesque experience with its tree and fern-lined path that exudes a Middle Earth vibe. The waterfall cascades from a height over huge boulders into the rocky river below, creating an awe-inspiring sight.
Great little hike trough a rainforest that was so beautiful. Its only a 20 minutes return walk and very easy. There is no sign indicating that there is a waterfall here like the Thunder Creek waterfall or the Fantaill Falls so watch out for the green sign at the parking bay. Definitely stop here on your way for a quick stretch of your legs and a beautiful waterfall. You can walk up to the Haast river to get closer to the waterfall.
Qyllian De Haas — Google review
Stunning waterfall! A short walk from the car through a beautiful moss covered wooded area.
Pat Johnson — Google review
This was my favorite of the waterfalls along the Haast highway! They are pretty huge and a short walk will take you to the river bank across from them. The river was low on the day we went, so there was a wide stony bank which was enjoyable to explore. Great place to stop, stretch legs, and breathe the fresh air while taking in the sights
Kaitlin Silvey — Google review
A decent waterfall, but can't get that close due to a river separating you from the falls at the end of the track. The river has a nicer blue colour, and the area has nice surrounding scenery. Only a short 5 min walk to the falls.
Rich Fez — Google review
It's a short, easy walk to the river about 20-30mins return. There is a small waterfall opposite the river. You can go as far as you want along the river covered with really nice round stones of all sizes. It is an okay walk if it's not raining.
Line S — Google review
The short walk to the falls is so beautiful- like a fairyland walking through the ferns and moss growing everywhere. Falls are ok, we were lucky enough to see them after some decent rain but I just can’t get over how wonderful the walk is - worth it just to do the walk which is flat and easy going.
Stephen Hogg — Google review
Not bad - a quick walk off the road. Don’t expect much from the falls, you probably can’t get too close unless there hasn’t been rain in a while. If there has been rain, the river is roaring.
Andy Andersen — Google review
We hadn't planned to stop here, but we are happy we did! Parking for several vehicles, including our campervan. Flat, easy walk, ending in a small set of stairs. (If you dont want to ealk over you can see the falls from this point) Then a short walk over stones to get to the river and falls. Short detour, well worth it!
Rebecca Lee — Google review
The Waterfall is nice and does good noise. But the color of the water was even better! Impressive

Motel
Haast River Motels & Holiday Park is a charming riverside accommodation offering rooms and cabins with fully equipped kitchens, as well as a cozy lounge featuring a fireplace. Situated in the small town of Haast on New Zealand's South Island, it provides easy access to the scenic route from Wanaka to Haast, boasting stunning mountain views, waterfalls, and picturesque river areas along the way.
Stayed here for a night via powered campsite for our trip between Hokitika and Queenstown. Facilities were clean with hot showers, bathrooms with lots of counter space, kitchen with two fridges, two stoves and three sinks. We didn’t use Laundry facilities so can’t speak to that. The woman who checked us in was very pleasant and sold fresh farm eggs up front. She also had a supply of packaged foods available for sale. Beautiful views, nice and quiet property
Chelsea Hartman — Google review
We arrived a few days after Easter and the place has a very out of season feel. The office was closed before 7pm in the evening and closed again by 9.30 am in the morning. There are a lot of notices everywhere and the one in the shower was particularly startling. Although we found the ambience unwelcoming, there isn't a lot of choice and few opportunities to freedom camp in this region. The facilities were very clean and of an excellent quality.
Moira Fraser — Google review
This place has no pavement walking to the kitchen, a patch of grass that's wet after raining wet our shoes and feet, very cold! Toilet light auto off even if you are showering halfway in the night. But clean and well maintained. There is no bin in the kitchen, you have to bring everything outside to throw. Would not recommend.
Sandy Ho — Google review
Nice place to stay over night on a west coast adventure! No microwave in the room, bit strange as the room has a sink, toaster, plates etc. Mattress was a bit tired too, lucky in this instance I’m a solo traveler as I slept in the middle, otherwise it would’ve been like sleeping on a hill. Otherwise all good!
Mitchell Bruce — Google review
Very clean, affordable, comfortable and large-sized rooms. Lady at reception who checked us in was so friendly, sweet, efficient and knowledgeable. One of the best check-ins yet. Girlfriend loved the bed and shower. Set the tone for an awesome stay. Will be back. Thanks so much
Baden Parker-Brown — Google review
As a couple travelling and needing a last minute room for the night, we found this place ideal for the night stop over. Although basic and no frills, the rooms were clean and comfortable with everything we needed. Also fairly priced. The host was lovely and really welcoming. Definitely recommended if you need that last minute stop over.
Donna Neame — Google review
We stayed in room 5 for one night. The staff were friendly and welcoming offering advice on where to have dinner. The room was on the upper floor, spacious with nice views and we could see the sun set and rise from the balcony. The room was well appointed, the king bed and large shower were very good. TV channels were pretty basic but with free wi-fi we could access online content on our laptop. We recommend this place and would happily stay again.
Tony — Google review
Great spot to park up for a night or two. Staff are very helpful and informative. Stayed in motorhome and used camp facilities. Shower hot and good water pressure. Very clean and well serviced. Great kitchen area.
Les — Google review
We stopped by for a night’s rest on the way from Queenstown to Greymouth which we booked in advance on their website at a good price. Friendly hospitality at the reception lady and her dog poppy. Room was excellent! We stayed on the 2nd floor family room. Beds were comfortable, fast WiFi and lots of amenities. Highly recommend a stay here if you’re looking for a place to rest up in Haast.
Azahar Zainuddin — Google review
We personally felt the cost was too high for the facilities offered ($48, powered site). Be aware the lights in the showers and toilets switch off automatically after around 6 or so minutes so if you are on your own having a shower at night, you'll need to leave your cubicle and walk close to the entrance door to re-activate them, this was an unpleasant surprise. Our dog was welcome, thank you, and there are walks around to take your dog for a walk which was very nice. Gravel carpark for sites which was grim. For a one night stopover it was fine.
Colleen Lennon — Google review
For a place in the middle of no where, we came with low expectations. Turned out to be a great stop very friendly staff excellent amenities with a cool atmosphere. Tidy grounds with a dump station. We where in a motor home. They are OK with dogs too which is a bonus, just make sure you respect their rules staying with a dog is a privelage. Not a large walk area for bigger dogs was fine for our little one. Excellent break point overnight between Franz Josef and Wanaka.
Johno Jorey — Google review
Absolutely fantastic stay. Accommodation was awesome and well priced 👍 front counter service was awesome and very friendly. Accommodated for needs having a watercraft. Definitely will be back! Great job team
Killian Dragsund — Google review
We enjoyed our two night stay in an upstairs unit. Facilities looked good for tent campers and motor homes as well. Friendly staff. Clean spacious unit with ample cooking equipment.
Ruth Jarman — Google review
Clean, comfy and warm bed, great shower with excellent water pressure. Great drinking water. Adequate parking. Only reason not 5 star is soundproofing between units could be a little better. Noisy neighbors keep you up
Vicki Piner — Google review
I campervanned here on the 24th June 2023. Straight away they took me in without any Hussel and Bussle, no fussing around. Quite, Friendly, Great Amenities and facilities. The game, kitchen shower and toilets look like a hanger style. I recommend people should come and stop over night and see the gorgeous area. Thumbs up from me.
Iam thatiam — Google review
We stayed in the lovely campsite. Great facilities and all very clean. Plenty of room for larger caravans and a different area for campervans all very well set out. Custodians were very helpful when we had an electrical issue. Thank you.
Erin Giles — Google review
I’ve stayed here as a motorhome camper many times. There used to be a new atmosphere and vibe here. So much more user friendly. Playground for the kids. Excellent showers. Entertainment room. Yummy icecream. A credit to the staff and managers.
Jenny Lamberton — Google review
Great location for a stopover to Franz Josef. Spots are fine on gravel (no grass next to camper). We were close to a playground that the children really liked. Washing and drying for a fair price. Showers are nice and spacious. Living room/kitchen fully equipped. All in all, a simple but excellent campsite for a night
Dirk Geertsema — Google review
Campervan traveler: 1* for nice staff 1* for “lifesaver” location between Wanaka and Glaciers (freedom camping is difficult in the westlands) -1* for high price: 52$ for 2 adults / 1 night / powered is too high for what is offered -1* kitchen areas too small (only 2 stove areas -> queues in the evening - we needed to wait 40 minutes to use the stoves and the whole place was filled by maximum 30%; so don’t want to imagine how busy it is if more people are there) -1* lack of cleanliness in kitchen area and bathrooms / showers. Especially for this price we have seen much better @management team: either lift up your offered quality or decrease your prices.
Max Max — Google review
Lovely little spot! Fully stocked drink station in our King studio room. Nice little couch, decent sized bathroom, table for two, and a very decently sized fridge. The kitchenette has everything you will need, from a sink, to a hot plate, to a microwave. Great service, assigned parking, and near a couple restaurants!
Kandis Golden — Google review
Fine campsite for a quick stop over on the way. Toilets and showers were nice but there were too few of them. Interesting atmosphere in the kitchen communal area which looked like a converted barn. There were lots of sandflies.
Jesper Kristensen — Google review
Stopped our campervan here for a welcome respite from very heavy rain in Jan 2024. Reasonable laundry facilities - 3 washing machines, 3 driers. Large kitchen/amenity room. Very helpful staff.
Yvonne Owens — Google review
One of very few accommodations in the area, some owners might take advantage of limited competition and cut corners but not here. Staff and owners take pride in the property and it is well kept and clean. Definitely would stay again.
Scott Larue — Google review
Really enjoyed my stay here in an RV with family and friends. The kitchen area is very spacious and has tables and games! There’s also a nice lounge with lots of board games. Bathrooms are clean. Would highly recommend bringing a large group here.
Ethan Chien — Google review
The rooms are basic, very clean and comfortable but with a few amenities however there is full camp kitchen on site which you can use. The staff are friendly and helpful and overall it was a pleasant experience.

This is a non-wet, eco tour that is a peaceful alternative to the thrill seeking shot over jets. The Haast jet boat was fun. Usually, the craft we were on has a 4.5-foot draft, but when the dual Chevy 350 big blocks got going, we skipped up the rapids and shallows at a draft of around 4.5 inches. During the tour we stopped at a few spots for photos, saw a 30lb chunk of greenstone. At the end we did a few 360's in front of the timid people who stayed on bus which were actually 180's as they were not complete turns.

A splendid place to stop and enjoy a couple of very different short walks. The kahikatea forest walk takes you right amongst some tall groves of these amazing trees. I love kahikateas and there are so few left in Canterbury, it's a real treat to walk amongst them. The dune walk was also a special experience with the white dunes and the flotsam that washes up on est coast beaches. We were there at sunset and it was quite magical. No sandflies were found!
Moira Fraser — Google review
I visited Ship Creek Beach in Aug 22, and it was great. Isolated and almost eerie during the late afternoon with no one else on the beach. As the photos show, there is a lot of Driftwood on the beach. It's not safe for swimming due to strong currents, and there are no lifesavers, so don't risk it.
Ahmad — Google review
The sand flies on the beach are thick! It's nice to be able to climb the tower, walk the boardwalk and beach. Just apply some bug spray. There were no sandflies on the swamp walk. Restrooms available
Trypp Adams — Google review
Nice scenic view of the beach. There is a view point where u have to climb ladders which is complicated. Public toilet available. No pets allowed
nirosh gamage — Google review
We did the dune lake walk. A nice short 15-20 minute walk, although the best views are obtained from the wooden lookout you can climb at the start of the track (so make sure you climb up this structure!). There are also a couple of nice lookouts on the dune lake track.
Rich Fez — Google review
Ship Creek has a toilet and adequate parking. Easy walks & quick access to beach. Has a fun little spotting tower.
Shane Williamson — Google review
There are several short walks in the area, all on flat and well maintained boardwalks or paths. The beach itself has some lovely shiny rocks, and there is a bay near the carpark that is beautiful to see (and photograph).
Rebecca — Google review
Just beautiful!! Highly recommend the stop. Even got to see a pod of dolphins
Jodie Spedding — Google review
To the left, of the main entry/carpark a short boardwalk leads over the sand to a beach view and off this a pathway around 20 - 30 mins return and up about 30m of stairs to a viewing platform with views down the coast. Parking for all sized vehicles available and some good displays around to look over. Tip - remember to take the sandfly repellant
Doubie26 — Google review
Lovely loop walk to a tranquil lagoon. If you don’t have time for that climb the lookout. If you aren’t fit enough for that the beach and stream are still a very pretty sight.
Neville Merritt — Google review
This is a must-see en route up the West Coast. A beautiful and beautifully presented walk combining beach, woodland, and lakeside all within an hour. A credit to DoC. At the main area and then along the pathway there are steps up to look-out points. So keep an eye out for them and make these short climbs which command great vistas. And there’s a clean and tidy toilet block too!
Hamish Pringle — Google review
Lovely little stop with three walk options, two tracks and then the beach, all wonderful. Some bigger parking spots available if you are towing a caravan. Highly recommended. See more on YouTube caravantheworld
Rose Healey — Google review
Yes there are sandflies (the little gnats that bite and leave welts) so just have a jacket on and you'll be good :) The rocks. THE ROCKS. they are tumbled to perfection on this beach. If you love searching for rocks, go here - we collected way too many haha. Like a 1 min walk on a boardwalk from the car park to get to the beach.
Julie J — Google review
Great natural beach location with two really interesting and informative short walks, and a lookout tower. The signage and boardwalks are fantastic.
Malcolm Dow — Google review
There are 2 different walks here with a decent path or walkway, good to break up a long car journey on the west coast. There are toilets too if nature calls
Andy Mitchell — Google review
Lovely stop with great views, even on a rainy day! The boardwalk makes experiencing the different sections of the bush really easy (with minimal sand!). Unfortunately, the swamp track is still closed as of March 2023.
Kaitlin Silvey — Google review
Comfortable seaside with a few easy tracking trails, worth spending more time there to explore the beauty. LOTS of tourists LOL

Smallish car park with nice views of the bay below, but can be busy as stopping point for coach tours. Also plagued by sand flies on the day we visited.

Theobelisk monument at Knights Point was set up to celebrate the completion of the highway connecting Westland with Otago. What is interesting is the name. Usually Prime Minister's / politicians try to name things after themselves / monuments, buildings, roads etc. Usually it is called empire building. If you don’t tell people about your success, then they probably won’t know about it. Wellington City is the capital where the politicians call the shots. Politicians are renowned for promoting themselves and naming stuff for posterity. However, the construction crew outsmarted the delegation from Wellington and informed them that the area had "already been named" Knights Point. The officials inquired who "Knight" was and were informed that he was the surveyor's dog. Knights Point was named after Norman McGeorge's dog Knight. The tail wags the dog! An expression used to describe a situation in which an important or powerful person, organization, etc., is being controlled by someone or something that is much less important or powerful. The official opening of this last section of the highway that is now State Highway 6 was on 6 November 1965. Today the site includes a car park and viewing platform overlooking the coast towards Arnott Point, a resting area for New Zealand fur seals and occasionally elephant seals.
W R Edwards — Google review
One of the many viewpoints on West coast. Nothing special about the place. Got a parking area and rest rooms. Beware of sandflies.
Naveen Peter — Google review
Not much to do here, no walks just a car park with some views and a toilet block. There are information signs that explain a bit of history of the area and the building of the west coast road.
Andy Mitchell — Google review
Definitely worth stopping at as the view is stunning of the coastline from here.
Nigel — Google review
Spectacular view over the coast, nice stop if you are driving by.
Lasse P. — Google review
Not much to see on a rainy day. Could hardly see the water. I imagine the view would be ok on a sunny day, but as others have commented it’s pretty overgrown. Sand flies were out, so dress accordingly. There are loo/bathroom facilities though
Andy Andersen — Google review
Not the best view of the Tasman sea... As it's quit over grown... But nice monument here to avoid the history of the Haast pass. Clean toilets although it's just a long drop. Plenty of safe parking available.
coen cramer — Google review
First and foremost: come prepared with bug repellant! Tons of sandflies here and they’ll happily chomp on any exposed part of you otherwise. Overall a pretty viewpoint, but not super remarkable. The whole region is so gorgeous that I didn’t find this specific spot to hugely stand out, if that makes any sense. Still a good place to stop and stretch your legs, and use clean bathrooms if you need them.
