Shah-i-Zinda

Mentioned on
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Shah-i-Zinda, located in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, is a captivating avenue of mausoleums adorned with ornate tilework dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. The name translates to "Tomb of the Living King" and refers to the holiest shrine within the complex.
More amazing mosaics! The left hand row of tombs are beautifully decorated with majolica tiles. By the time they built the right side row (30 years later} they had learned to do beautiful mosaics. A few are spectacular on the inside too.

Another gorgeous site in Samarkand. It’s significantly smaller than other sites, and as such, can get crowded. Mind your surroundings and be respectful to locals coming to pray and offer respects at this holy place. If you’re visiting, please offer a helping hand to elders as they walk up the stairs.
Michael Greenberg — Google review
Fell in love with this place. You can spend here a lot of time wandering through turquoise-blue glazed bricks. The best time for visit is early morning (7-8:00) and in the second part of the day (17-19:00)
Edyta Bartkiewicz — Google review
If you are traveler, I highly recommend to visit here. Blue gate and arts are more beautiful than Tiffany blue. You need to up long stair to visit these buildings but it is worth to climb.
猪飼太郎 — Google review
Large complex full of 10+ masoleums - actually quite unique compared to other sites like Registan with some of the brightest blue colors in the country, but much more crowded (at least when we went) and relatively small. You can spend about an hour here and cover everything thoroughly.
Erin Y — Google review
40,000 to enter. Very crowded, hard to get photos of anything without people in them. The main beautifully tiled buildings walkway is not very long, different to what was expected. The mausoleums are stunning, some inside as well.
Jennifer Bradford — Google review
Beautiful collection of ancient mausoleum. There is a steep flight of stairs to get there. Then, an alleyway where the mausoleum are on either side. About 12 in total, mostly incredibly ornate. Cost to enter was 40,000 Som per person, or about £3/$2.5, so a bargain really. Like everything in Uzbekistan its great value.
Nick Ennis — Google review
An unforgettable experience walking amidst the spirits of Uzbekistan’s royalties. The mausoleum is well-restored and we were simply blown away by its colours. A few points to note - there are many stories about this site that you will not learn on your own and for such a significant site it is recommended to get a local tour guide who can tell you the stories in your language. We didn’t do that, to my regret. Secondly, either go super early or wait till the early dusk hours, those are the times when you can enjoy the sites without the hassles of fighting over photo take spots with others. It is a very popular place indeed. Allow for at least two hours there.
Helen Yu (Chestnut Journal) — Google review
It's amazing! Calm, beautiful and fewer hawkers. It's an amazing pace of great history. The colours, the shapes and just walking down a magical hallway or three.
Sajjid Balolia — Google review
Interesting necropolis. Had a good guide with us. And that would be smart, as otherwise the stories behind each tomb/crypt are not as vividly told and that's part of the fun
Niclas Toussaint — Google review
Brilliant architecture and decorations, nice to visit. Small hint, if you visit the cemetary first, the gate to the Shah-i-Zinda complex might be open (north-east part) so this makes the entrance free of charge ;)
Bruno Van de Voorde — Google review
Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful complexes of absolutely stunning Islamic art and architecture! The opening time posted on Google is 9 a.m. In fact, the actual opening time is 7 a.m. That time discrepancy is great if a visitor wants to get photos that are not corrupted with heaving masses of tourists. Simply arrive at 7 a.m. I went to this place twice, arriving at about 7:05 a.m., each time, and was incredibly lucky to have the place all to myself. I was able to take dozens of photos at my leisure without another visitor around! For me, the Shah-i-Zinda surpasses all the Islamic art and architecture I’ve seen anywhere, including Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, etc.
Jocelyn Garwood — Google review
💙💙💙 This necropolis complex is spectacular, for me as striking as Registan but I hadn't known this until researching more about Samarkand and places to visit. Set atop a hill, it was a manageable walk from my guest house (lots of simple roads, not amazing condition) and just WOW! At the entrance by the ticket office they do provide clothing to cover up. Very busy even in the morning and a lot of tourists posing for "insteagrammable" style pics - but have to be respectful. The tombs and mausoleums are so beautiful and you can see them all lined up in one
Betsy & The City — Google review
Gorgeous site. There are many beautiful sites to visit in Samarkand but this one is definitely the best. Stunning blue and green tiles everywhere you look.
Laura Companys — Google review
Every mausoleum is beautiful in its own way in this solemn and peaceful place. Even the destroyed ones that were rebuilt have their own wondrous features. Be ready to climb steps to get in.
bert bertram — Google review
Beautiful place. It has the graves of various royals and rulers. The monument is beautifully carved with blue and turquoise marbles. Surely worth visiting in Samarkand. The ticket costs 40,000 som per adult. You will find a number of souvenir shops inside. Don’t forget to bargain while making a purchase.
kangan soni — Google review
The attraction gets super crowded. It opens at 7am, so your best bet is to reach there by 7 and you will have the entire place to yourself :) There is a flight of steep stairs, but that's not a lot of stairs so probably doable for most. It is a graveyard of the royals and hence, is beautifully made. The guy at the ticket counter was very friendly too.
Sara Ali — Google review
The site is the equivalent of Rome's Pantheon or Krakow's Wawel. Extraordinary architecture. I still dream about the colourful mosaics. Lots of tourists, so it's worth coming in the morning. Long, steep and oversized stairs make it seem inaccessible to people with reduced mobility. I think there is a lack of historical explanation on site. For example, plaques could be placed behind the mausoleums.
Antoni T — Google review
Hands down it’s one of the most spectacular sites that you will get to see, not just in Samarkand, but in the whole world. It’s one of those places that will remain in your memory for life. A definite must see for anyone visiting Samarkand. The Shah-i-Zinda Ensemble includes mausoleums and other ritual buildings of 11th – 15th and 19th centuries. The name Shah-i-Zinda (meaning "The living king") is connected with the legend that Qutham ibn Abbas, a cousin of Muhammad, is buried here. He came to Samarkand with the Arab invasion in the 7th century to preach Islam. The Shah-i-Zinda complex was formed over eight (from the 11th until the 19th) centuries and now includes more than twenty buildings
Santosh Pingalay — Google review
One of the most visited and beautiful mosque here. A must visit place for sure. Great for taking pictures during early morning or during sunset time.
KevUn — Google review
Our final stop on the day's tour - and by now we were all getting rather jaded - was the Shahi Zinda Mausoleum complex. Built in the fifteenth century around the alleged grave of the Prophet's cousin. It was a steep climb with a necropolis on the lower slopes and then mausoleums on the top of the hill. Some - such as the ones to Timur's wives or daughters - were beautiful and others were far plainer, often with an unknown person or family interred inside. By now it was the case of more amazing mosaics, more beautiful blue domes, more gorgeous calligraphy! This was also the busiest attraction we visited in the city, or seemed it as it was quite a narrow walk between the buildings and up the hill.

Registan Square

Mentioned on
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Registan is a huge public square in the historical center of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. It's a perfect representation of the Timurid style of architecture and over time it has even influenced cultures and architecture throughout all the surrounding regions.
Breathtaking display of art and history, a do-not-miss for Uzbekistan. The details are really incredible - both well preserved and restored. Enter the actual site during the day when you can see all the details, and then return at night just to observe the site from the outside lit up.
Erin Y — Google review
I have seen a thousand pictures and documentaries about this place but non of them actually compare to being here and seeing the place with your own eyes. Be sure to walk all the way around the outside of the walls and visit the lovely parks. Go early in the morning to avoid the tourist herds. Rent a bicycle nearby at the pedestrian walkway
Adam Rogers — Google review
I went here twice. First time during the day with a Viator tour guide. The second time early evening to nighttime by myself. Words simply cannot describe this place. I was awes by the architecture and history. There’s just so much to absorb that I recommend you go twice. The tickets are cheap.

This place has a really good vibe, especially in the evenings. Flocks of tourists, street food vendors, balloon and toys vendors roaming around. If you want good pictures, then visit during early hours or during the sunset. Pictures don’t come out well during night time. Ticket costs 80,000 som per adult. Ulugh Beg Madrasah, Tilya-Kori Madrasah & Sher-Dor Madrasah are inside Registan Square. A lot of souvenir shops are available inside, don’t forget to bargain.

Extraordinary. Huge. Spend a lot of time (and take a lot of pictures.). We were there most of the day and went back after dinner to take some night-time pictures. Lots of families - kids, parents, grandparents, groups of friends.... In the day, be sure to visit Babur's Music Shop within the complex also.
Lyz Kurnitz-Thurlow — Google review
A lovely place to sit back and relax. Lots of space, not just for tourists, it’s wonderful to see locals also enjoying the park and view of the Registan. A must visit when in Samarkand!

Great place to visit in Samarkand. There are 3 tomb ans each one inside having a history. You car hire a tour guide or download a app to discover about this monument. There are plenty of shops where you can find many hand made items. There is entry ticket of 50000 Som per adult.

Beautiful landmark!!! We had a chance to see full 21 mins light show!! And it was amazing ( i have full video but cant post it here)
Olenka Salimova — Google review
Amazing structure with an entry ticket at just USD 5. Most of it was restored in 1930 so what we see now wasn't the original artwork, but it's still mesmerising nonetheless. There's a huge park surrounding the area and the locals like to hangout here with their families, I even saw a wedding photoshoot being held in the viewing platform. I love history and visiting historical buildings gives me a huge amount of serotonin. Also, I'm all for the souvenir shops and stalls available near all the historical structures in the world. It's part of the charm and oftentimes I will get something for a keepsake. However, it saddens me that when I enter each of the structures inside Registan Square, they convert each empty space to be a souvenir store. I appreciate that the sellers are not pushy and forcing us to buy something from them, but then again seeing hundreds of years old structure doesn't have that same feeling when you come inside and find people selling local crafts. I expect to see them outside, or next to the building 😂

Really nice place I have visited before. Remarkable minarets of buildings stood like new even though they have been built several centuries ago. Also there is great opportunity to speak with foreigners and talking with them about their lifestyle, culture and country. Also that is great to take postive feedback from tourists. Highly recommend to visit old center of islamic culture

The number place to visit in Samarkand - the Registon. The place is huge- allow yourself 3-4 hours if you want to deeply appreciate the place and its history. Tour guide and audio guide are available at the gate. The ticket is 65,000 Som per person. The place was a school before and now the classrooms, professors’ office were turned into souvenir shops.

I like the tone there! Unfortunately because of Macron we couldn’t come inside the mosque, so I could only take the video of it. If you need content for your blog, there are many beautiful places for it there. Don’t miss free “excursion” in several shops about Uzbekistan ceramics. It was interesting! In gardens you can listen to live traditional music Try to visit Registan late evening to see the show if someone paid it :)

Stunning!😎👍 A must to visit if you are in Samarkand.🇺🇿 It has a great architectural design! One of the best place to explore in Uzbekistan.
Jelyn — Google review
The grandest square in Samarkand. I didn’t like the idea that you had to pay to go in. Of course you can walk around the perimeter and photograph the exterior. One day it was sunny and the next day it was snowy, so had very different pictures. At night 7pm there is a light show in the Registan for about 50 min and it’s ticketed. This ensemble of majestic, tilting medressas – a near-overload of majolica, azure mosaics and vast, well-proportioned spaces – is the centrepiece of the city, and arguably the most awesome single sight in Central Asia. The three grand edifices here are among the world’s oldest preserved medressas, anything older having been destroyed by Chinggis Khan.
Donovan Leong — Google review
Registan Square is a real dessert for a magic dinner table. My advice to you is this - visit other historical monuments during the day. And when the sun goes down, dessert for your eyes and soul will be ready. Try not to go to the square directly, but look for another way in the dark near walls. And then, suddenly, an amazing beauty will flash in front of your eyes.

Amir Temur Mausoleum Gur-i Amir Сomplex

Mentioned on
Historical place
Sights & Landmarks
The Amir Temur Mausoleum Gur-e Amir complex is a stunning must-see destination in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. It features an ornate portal and trademark fluted azure dome, as well as charming tombs of Timur (Tamerlane), his two sons, and two grandsons. The building is relatively small due to Timur's unexpected death not being planned for here, but the tilework and dome are particularly beautiful at night when lit up.
Beautiful architecture and plenty of history of silk route, A must visit tourist attractions, don’t miss interacting with local people and kids, and carry your photography skills and equipments
Ashmath Ali — Google review
It’s a beautiful mausoleum with a gold colour inside, different than others in the city. There’s very minimal information about the site. A guidebook or tour is helpful to understand what you’re seeing.

It’s Tamerlane’s tomb. You’re in Samarkand. Go visit it! Where else in the West can you see such beautiful Islamic architecture? The tomb is certainly worth the time to visit.

Rating: ★★★★☆ The Gur-Emir Mausoleum in Samarkand is truly a sight to behold. This mausoleum, steeped in history, stands as a majestic testament to the architectural and cultural grandeur of the Timurid era. The intricate tile work and the grandiose dome are mesmerizing, reflecting the artistry and craftsmanship of a bygone era. While the site's significance and beauty are undeniable, its popularity among tourists can sometimes detract from the serene experience one might hope for in such a historic setting. Nonetheless, the Gur-Emir Mausoleum remains a must-visit for those interested in the rich tapestry of Central Asian history. Just be prepared for a crowd!

The most important place to visit, Amir Temur Mausoleum reflect the history and all the ups and downs, Temur or Timur is a national icon for Uzbekistan, his adventures were, though hated in many countries, appreciated here, it's better to engage a guide to understand better.
Madan Gopal Madabhushi — Google review
The 14th-century mausoleum of the Mongol conqueror Timur. Though it has suffered from time and earthquakes, the monument is still sumptuous. Completed in 1404, it was originally intended to be the tomb of Timur’s grandson Muhammad Shah, but after Timur’s death in 1405 he was interred there as well, along with other members of his family. The extant structures in the complex consist of a chapel crowned with a ribbed blue-tiled dome, enclosed by a wall, and fronted by an archway. The interior walls are covered with elegant turquoise arabesques and inscriptions in gold. The Gūr-e Amīr is one of the properties included in the 2001 designation of Samarkand as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

One of Samarkand's "must visit" places. The insides of Amir Temur's mausoleum are beautiful and nothing like any other mausoleum in the city. It looks very rich and beautiful. If you visit this place, I assume you love history and come here with a guide to get a proper explanation of what each site was used for in the past. It was majestic and I couldn't get enough of the blue hues. Each carvings, each structure has a history and meaning behind it, makes you wonder what a great empire Amir Temur has built. This site is the burial site of Amir Temur, his teacher/advisor, and his blood relatives.

Really beautiful Islamic architecture housing the burials for a few of the better known royalties of the Timurid Dynasty, including the great Tamerlane himself. There was a curse associated with his jade sealed coffin - whoever that attempted to open it, had severe bad luck. Wonderful stories and myths there besides the grandeur of the interior. This was also our first sightseeing in Samarkand

The Tilla-Kari Madrasah is known for its elaborate tilework and mosaics, which are visible in the blue and gold ceiling you mentioned. Its an amazing architecture ❤️piece and beautiful place ❤️Sure, here is a review of Tilla Kari Masjid: Tilla Kari Masjid, also known as the Mosque of Gold, is a stunning architectural masterpiece located in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. It was built in the 15th century by Timurid ruler Ulugh Beg and is renowned for its exquisite tilework, intricate calligraphy, and impressive dome. One of the three madrasahs that make up the Registan complex. The architecture is simply incredible. Look at the intricate artwork on the four sides of the courtyard. The gold work in the mosque area is stunning and its dome is in fact not a dome but a flat surface, but the painter has created an optical illusion. Wonderful building.

One of three main parts of Registan complex. This one has the best garden, imo. There are a lot of souvenir shops inside. I advise you visit it both during the day and in the evening, as the impression can be different. First of all; wake up really early and get there by 8am sharp. If you don’t do that then don’t waste money visiting this place. Of all the historical sites I have seen in some of the cities around the world; these 3 structures would be amongst the top in terms of design, the grandeur, the colours and just the sheer imagination they initiate in ones mind on how great the civilisation would have been that built these structures and more importantly the focus on education was incredibly impressive! This would be my number one priority to visit in Samarkand followed by the Bibi Khanum Mosque and Shah-I-Zinda

The Ulugh Beg Madrasa is a significant historical landmark constructed by Mirzo Ulugbek in the early 15th century. It was designed by Kavomiddin Sherozi and is renowned for its intricate architectural details. Visitors can climb to the top of the minaret to enjoy panoramic views, although the stairway is narrow and not well-lit, making it unsuitable for those who suffer from claustrophobia.

When you enter Registan, Ulugh Beg Madrasah is the one to your left. This madrasah was considered one of the best religious colleges in the Muslim world in the 15th century. It nurtured many notable Persian poets and philosophers. Go inside the madrasah and walk all the way to the opposite end of the courtyard to find a small hidden door. This door opens up to a staircase which will lead you up to the second floor of the building. The view from the top is absolutely spectacular; you get to see the courtyard and the walls of the madrasah from an entirely different perspective. You’ll find lots of cool angles for photography as well.

The Ulugh Beg Madrasa is a madrasa (Islamic school) in the historic center of Samarkand, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Uzbekistan. Together with other monuments, it forms the monumental ensemble of Registan, the old heart of the city. It was built between 1417 and 1421 by the then-Timurid governor of Samarkand, Ulugh Beg, Timur's grandson and prominent astronomer, who was later emperor between 1447 and 1449. The madrasa was an important teaching center of the Timurid Empire, where they taught some of the most outstanding scholars of their time, both religious and secular. It is the oldest building in Registan, the only one from the 15th century and the only survivor of a wider architectural ensemble, which included several mosques, caravanserais, a bazaar, and a khanaqah (inn of Sufis). At the site of the latter is currently the Sher-Dor Madrasah, located in front of Ulugh Beg Madrasa.
Safwan Ibn Shahab — Google review
The Ulugh Beg Madrasah, built by Ulugh Beg during the Timurid Empire era of Timur, has an imposing iwan with a lancet-arch pishtaq or portal facing the square. The corners are flanked by high minarets. The mosaic panel over the iwan's entrance arch is decorated by geometrical stylized ornaments. The square courtyard includes a mosque and lecture rooms, and is fringed by the dormitory cells in which students lived. There are deep galleries along the axes. Originally the Ulugh Beg Madrasah was a two-storied building with four domed darskhonas (lecture rooms) at the corners. The Ulugh Beg Madrasah (Persian: مدرسه الغ بیگ) was one of the best clergy universities of the Muslim Orient in the 15th century CE. Abdul-Rahman Jami, the great Persian poet, scholar, mystic, scientist and philosopher studied at the madrasah.[1] Ulugh Beg himself gave lectures there. During Ulugh Beg's government the madrasah was a centre of learning

One of the most amazing and beautiful madrassahs we have seen even compared to those in Tashkent, Khiva and Bukhara.

One of three main parts of Registan complex. There is solar clock in the garden and also a small museum (free of charge). Also lots of souvenir shops. I advise you visit it both during the day and in the evening, as the impression can be different. Best photos are made during the day, but most fun is in the evening, when music and lights show takes place.

Another magnificent piece of art building in Samarkand.

Beautiful madrassah. There are plenty of shops inside where you can buy a variety of items including suzanis, jackets, artisanal knives, and ceramics. The ceramic store especially was worthwhile as the owner will give you a quick lesson on the different types, where they are from and what to look for. There is also a tea and Turkish coffee area where you can sit and people watch.

Beautiful Madrassah, part of the 3 within Registon Square. Calming, serene & tree lined. Contains a number of smalll souvenir shops, where you do get a little hassled to enter. This is part of the overall entry price for Registon Square. All 3 Madrassah take a few hours to look atound but they are all beautiful, historic & well looked after. Well worth a visit.

Platan is a Michelin starred restaurant with a varied and delicious menu. It offers both Uzbek cuisine and international cuisine, and the prices are very reasonable. The only downside is that it's quite a walk from the centre in a residential area.
Absolutely our favourite restaurant in all of Uzbekistan. Wonderful friendly staff that speaks English, food is delicious, diverse and well presented. The beer on tap is fresh and crisp. We were impressed by their wine list - a huge selection we never saw anywhere else. The atmosphere is fantastic, very cosy and welcoming. Well done!

XXL menu item, full book of 10/15 pages. With plates from too many different culture. Is a chef really able to prep and serve dishes inclusive of all the meat of Uzbekistan with all veggies and Mediterranean starter as well as the dessert ? Well... Doesn’t seem to be all super fresh and handmade. Disappointing, Friendly staff tho !

The BEST restaurant from our 10 days trip in UZB. We loved it soo much that visited twice and both times we were extremely happy! Amazing salads, meat and desserts (I still can taste them). Great service, too! Recommended to reserve since it was very busy. Once we didn’t have a reservation and they made the effort to get us a table!

Platan is a great place to try traditional Uzbek food. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is cozy. I had the plov and it was delicious! Would definitely recommend.

Great food (both international and local), seems like a great selection of (tasty) Uzbekistan wine, lovely staff. Live music, too (not intrusive).

This restaurant surprises me a lot. The interior design is charming and very welcoming. Food is delicious fresh and hot. The service is very good. If you want to enjoy your meal, definitely go to this place. It will not disappoint you.

I could not get a table without a reservation, so I made one the following night and I am very glad I did. It was a lovely night out so we sat on the terrace. The local Uzbek wine was acceptable and the waiter spoke passable English. Platan is very proud of their new Josper Grill and have a menu devoted to entrees prepared on it. We started with traditional Dolma and they disappeared quickly. Platan is a farm to table restaurant and the fresh non-hothouse tomatoes in the Green Salad were the best I’ve tasted in the last month touring Central Asia. The Beef and Potatoes was quite good and the Sesame Salmon was outstanding (I cannot imagine how they got fresh salmon, but they most assuredly did). It was the finest meal we’ve yet to have in the Stans.

We were dining in Platan restaurant and everything was great. Super tasty food, amazing service, all quick and on time. We really enjoyed it.
Ivana Tomic — Google review
We came for the lunch and it's not crowded and then it turned out to be one of the best meal we had during the entire Uzbekistan trip. We ordered mastava, salad, beef dish & lamb dish (forgot the name) and all were fabulous. We started to love mastava ever since tried at this restaurant but never had another one that close to Platan. Price is on the higher side but the atmosphere and the quality of food, I will still highly recommend it's a restaurant not to be missed!
Bradley C. — Google review
Please, somebody, turn off the underground electronic music, teach the waiters some basic english, and for God’s sake, please please, if you will not serve it don’t put it in the menu… It took us 30min to get any kind of attention from the waiters and that did not help, because they treated any English world as out of this world… choosing food was another struggle, because most food on the menu was not served. The little appetite we had left was butchered by the background underground electronic music blended with the live saxaphone from the outside. The only nice thing about the place was the cool design, but that does not make a restaurant number 1. We would be better off at the osh house by the hotel… a very big disappointment…

If you are in Samarqand, don't miss this restaurant. Forget about the tour guides' recommendations: they get commissions from restaurants. Platan will be the highlight of your day in Samarqand. Really high quality food, in a quiet and comfortable atmosphere. Lovely!

Not sure why there are so many low reviews. The food was delicious and affordable. The dishes are on the higher end of the scale though you are also in a luxurious restaurant with napkins, and leather bound cutlery sets. They also have an extensive wine menu and we were able to try some local sparkling. Highly recommend for a bit of a fancy night out!

The Samarkand Restaurant is a fantastic place to eat in Uzbekistan. It's a national restaurant, meaning it's owned and operated by the government, and it features excellent local cuisine. The restaurant is comfortable and clean, with fast staff who are willing to please customers. The outdoor dining area is especially nice, with walls ripped from a Tsars palace.
Samarkand is a cozy, atmospheric gem! The food is delicious with big portions that really satisfy. From soups to shashlik, bread, and salads, the menu is extensive and offers something for everyone. The service is attentive, quick, and welcoming—a perfect dining experience!

Pros: - fast and good personnel - comfortable and clean place. Outside and inside. - chicken (salty) and Cesare was OK - good prices Cons: - fish was OK (it took 45 min to cook it), but without salt. Noodles in Lagman was boiled too much - green tea is made from tea bags

lol a nice local food place with a big virility of dishes, really lots to choose from. Lamb chops were ok, could of been better, when samosas and eggplant dishes were great. Nice and clean, service was good and responsive.

A nice place to visit in Samarkand, not too far away from the city center. It is a very huge restaurant - when we were there, there was a party downstairs and the restaurant was available only upstairs. Even though there were a lot of guests and all tables were booked, the staff was professional, fast and food was delivered quickly. Food was nice and tasty, the only problem was that the meat dumplings were undercooked and we felt a bit sick afterwards…

I really like the restaurant it has three places to eat outside inside ground and the second floor we ordered salads sour cream kebab chops and fried beef everything was fresh healthy and food in Samarkand in general is very good

The decoration is a clear 5 star. It’s a funny place with your busses for lunch. At the time we were there some school kids celebrated a birthday party. They started to dance to Spanish music and Spanish tourists joined them. The food is good but not extraordinary. Overall, definitely worth a try!

A great place to experience local food and culture. There was a local wedding taking place inside when we dined here and could get to see the wedding guests dancing and celebrating. You might notice some funny names on the menu , nevertheless the food is amazing. Great food and wine .
Tata Divya — Google review
The best restaurant in Samarkand thus far. They carried a variety of cuisine here including Sushi. Egg plant salad was so good - soft and garlicky, but a tad bit oily. Chicken Kiev had a weird taste and fries were soggy. Classic mojito was not overly sweet and was not bad. Dumplings in cream tasted extremely beefy. There’s 15% service charge here but service was good.

I decided to go because of the rating once we arrive the place is disgusting the owner is hiring women to just keep dancing in a stupid cheap way. You cant hear Yourself because of the noise, once i asked for the food menu they were unwelcoming and very slow, we ordered the menu 5 times , and no one speaks English or any other language than Uzbek. The staff informed us that traditional food they buy from another restaurant we need to wait. I dont really recommend it especially if you are going with your family.

Samarkand Restaurant is a among the popular restaurants in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The food is decent and authentic, and the service is excellent. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city. They could improve by having few waiters who understand english and are able to explain the dishes considering its visited by tourists.

Very good restaurant in the centre of Samarkand. Ground floor can be noisy because there is a dj and the dance floor so, if you want a more quiet dinner where you can talk with your friends I suggest to get a table on the upper floor. Staff is always present and very professional. Should improve a bit their skill in English though.
Silvano P. — Google review
The snacks and main food are good, staff act as it should be. But the atmosphere, i just couldnt like it. Too much noise, too crowded for me. Constantly playing happy birthday songs etc.
Ömür Karaman — Google review
An experience, but not necessarily for the food. This is as Uzbek as can be, and as such recommended for once. The meat is not for everyone, and the olive can finish early. I recommend the Russian room (second floor), as the one below will likely be very noisy. I can’t really recommend a dish, I would come for the cultural value.

Restaurant "KARIMBEK" is a popular dining spot in Samarkand, located at a bustling intersection. The interior is beautifully decorated, showcasing the traditional spirit of Uzbekistan. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes, including kebabs, Russian cuisine, and exquisite Uzbek meals. Visitors praise the warm and cozy atmosphere and excellent service. Some note that English menus are not available, but the staff is accommodating and helpful.
Food was fresh and delicious. The ambience inside is a mix of traditional and modern, with lots of pretty lights to create a romantic mood.

Popular restaurant. The visit was hampered by a table with two drunk patrons who made a spectacle of themselves. The GM was unwilling to address them. The lamb was severely over cooked. I'm thinking this was an "off" night for them and not up to their usual standards. This would be worth another visit.
Mike Poulter — Google review
My recent visit to Karimbek in Samarkand was nothing short of delightful. The restaurant's beautiful decor and well-lit ambience truly captured the essence of Uzbekistan's traditional spirit. The menu at Karimbek is a true treasure trove of delicious Uzbek meals. I found myself indulging in their kabobs, breads, and salads, all of which were simply exquisite. However, it's worth noting that an English menu is not available, and most waiters do not speak English, except for one. It seems that Karimbek is a popular spot for locals to celebrate special occasions. During my visit, I witnessed a vibrant birthday party in the inner room, complete with lively music and joyful celebrations. The staff at Karimbek were incredibly hospitable, adding to the overall warmth of the place. What's more, the prices at Karimbek are reasonable, making it an excellent value for the quality of food and experience.

It was a very well lit restaurant and had a festive feeling with all the lights. There was probably a wedding party going on. The place is quite big and crowded as well. This is probably why the staff weren’t managed that well. We ordered lagma and kebabs. The food was good. Above average. Overall not a bad experience and the prices aren’t that bad too.

I recently visited this place and was delighted by the beautiful decor and well-lit ambiance that perfectly showcased the traditional spirit of Uzbekistan. We were told about this place by a Tourist Taxi driver and will admit to thoughts about it possibly being a tourist trap. And we were so wtong. The food, the ambience and of course the service was top notch. Unfortunately I don't recall the name of the young server who took our order with great patience despite the language barrier. We even felt the opposite of sticker shock when the bill came, lol. Karimbek has my unequivocal recommendation if you are in Samarkand.

Labi G'or is a restaurant located across from Registan, offering traditional Uzbek food and a selection of beer and wine. Despite some negative reviews, many visitors have enjoyed their meals there. The second-floor terrace provides a pleasant dining experience with excellent food, service, and ambiance at reasonable prices. Some customers were pleasantly surprised by the delicious cheeseburger and well-seasoned mutton and chicken kebabs.
I just finished a delicious meal. Cold beer, a portion of fries, a very nice mixed Turkish salad, a chicken kebab and a lamb kebab. Everything was just right. Service was fast and friendly. Cold food was cold. Hot food was hot. Flavor was great, especially the kebabs. Not sure what all the complaints ate about. Staff is working hard to get it all right.

Food is great!!! That’s a fact! Service- terrible! We’ve been there on November 2023. Came just by accident, passing by. So here is our impression. Soups were delicious. But what is happening around is shocking us. Some women in a very respectable age is cleaning the floor with a chlorine soaked cloth, on top of are pigeons popping on the floor, waiters are not really interested to look after the guests. Supervisor is beating the staff in the middle of the floor. You are being charged for SUGAR!!! Service charge is already included. When I asked to remove it cause I don’t want to leave tips, waiter said “but it is not tips”. Amazing so staff is lies face to face to the customers.

It was very very poor service. On the menu there would be a different price but then when I went to pay it was more expensive and wasn't a clean place. The rice was hard and not as soft as it should be. The staff was just rude. The coke was 10,000 but then sold it for 15,000. When you come from another country too which gives it an excuse to them to make prices higher.

Very nice restaurant, especially the one the second floor terrace. Food, service, ambiente - excellent and OK prices. For a lunch (Egg plant salad, Lamm shashlik, bread and beer I paid 58.000 Sum (aprox. 5.2 Euro). The quantity of bad reviews is impressing. They complain about bad food, hygiene, overprice (3x), that there are no price on the menu, tourist rip off etc. Just have a look inside to see mainly local customers and happy faces. Visited several times.

The lentil soup was delicious and so was the lemonade. We ordered Jiz Biz not knowing exactly what it was and was honestly positively surprised: very delicious lamb meat with potatoes, fries and a bit of salad. They also served beer (3,5% alcohol). The English translation of the menu is lacking but sometimes it’s worth risking and trying out something new.

You can explore the taste of traditional Uzbek cuisine amidst a vibrant ambiance. From the moment you step in, you're greeted with warm hospitality and a charming atmosphere. The menu boasts a variety of local dishes, from hearty plov to succulent kebabs. Some dishes lack the depth of flavor and finesse one might expect from a top-tier establishment. However, portions are generous. Their outdoor seating is also great.

As I am a foreigner I went inside their restaurant by 1:30 am it was open at midnight. I asked them if they had coke or Pepsi. They told they have closed. Then a guy comes from inside with a coke in his hand. I was thankful to him. I asked him for a glass and some ice cubes. As they were already charging 10K som which is 3k more than the price you get Pepsi outside I agreed to pay. But for ice cube the waiter demanded another 5K som making it 15K. I resisted not to pay anymore. They he brought me the glass and ice cubes, mentioning it’s free of cost. I mean why would you cheat foreigners at first place.

This is nice restaurant. Staff is cooperative. First I ordered lemon tea and was looking for other item. Then I ordered two other items and told to waitress to cancel lemon tea. But she wrongly understood and also served lemon tea. I said I cancelled it why you brought it. Then she said it is ok, and she taken return back. I appreciate that. Price wise it was good.

A very lit restaurant almost opposite Registan Square. With sitting outside on the pathway, inside on ground and first floor which is a terrace. They have a closed sitting on first floor as well. Live music and the floor open for people to dance. So alive. A decent menu with options for both vegetarians and non vegetarians. Beverage menu was big was not in English. We ordered potato wedges and lemon tea. Both of the items were amazing. Very delicious. 😋

We went during iftar time in the month of Ramadan. We explained the waiter about the iftar and asked whether they had any quick platter for the purpose or not, but there were no options in the first place. Then we ordered a few items. Later, the waiter came with a complimentary plate of dates and sweets for Iftar. The restaurant is in a very remarkable location, spacious and well decorated. The toilet remained busy all the time, and services had lots of rooms to improve. With 10% service charge, the standard was below average. The food was good.

Remember when they warn you not to eat in a resto near registan? Yeah I think this is what they mean. Something is off with this restaurant. Food taste okay but ambiance is great. At first they don't want us to sit inside I don't know why but we insisted so they obliged. They have a service charge of 20%! I think they overcharged me with the cake. When they served me the bill the guy kept asking if theres a problem with the bill I just said no and let him deal with his conscience. Whatever. Giving a fair rate as my husband was happy with beef barbecue. I attached the 40000 cake. A lot of people eat here and I don't know why but I'm not recommending. I felt robbed. Sorry.

Labi G’or… almost right across from the Registan… captures quite a lot of customers. On two floors, this huge brightly lit restaurant definitely attracts patrons like flies to a lamp on a dark night. Bob our server was efficient and friendly. We ordered a lentil soup, a chicken noodle soup , one Lagman, a lamb chop plus one serving of Manti and some fries. The chicken soup arrived luke warm. Taste was mediocre. The Lagman was served in a tiny soup bowl. It was oily and I will rate it 4/10. The lentil soup was rich in taste. The lamb chop was tasty but dismal in portion like a child’s serving. The Mantis were tasty too but there was simply too much meat inside. A hard dense ball! Oh… the bread was dense and hard. On the whole…dine at your discretion!

Read the reviews here seemed not bad and was also one of the recommended restaurants in Samarkand so decided to visit for lunch as I happened to be around the area. The place wasn't very crowded and there were staff walking around but they weren't very attentive. Took quite some time after a lot of waving before someone came to take my order. Ordered the Shurpa, it tasted not too bad, though the meat was bland. I had a try on Samarkand plov and I thought it wasn't my my preference but I decided to give another try again before giving conclusion that Samarkand plov isnt my type of plov and true enough, its more on the dry side and the rice is more on the tough side. Ordered also another soft drink to complete the meal and god, the meal is considered to be quite expensive. A bit too overpriced for a normal restaurant for average food. Can try if you want but I believe there are better and cheaper food elsewhere.

Great place to dine! The food is Usbeq and tasty. The atmosphere is relaxed and cosy. The host speaks English and is both friendly, service minded and nice to talk to. They serve both wine, beer and vodka. All local produced.

This is a traditional, family-owned Uzbek restaurant. The ambience is homey and comfortably welcoming. The food is delicious and the service is excellent. They also offer English menus for English-speaking clientele, which is not always the case in Uzbekistan.

Many options for tasting traditional Uzbek cuisine, perfect for lunch or dinner. Meat dumplings were delicious! Service is good, the waiter was able to explain the dishes to me, it was really appreciated!

This is a must visit joint for vegetarians but with a huge caveat. The way they transform Uzbek dishes to be meat free is problematic, as in, they also make them completely protein free as well. Samarkand pilaf could use some eggs and chickpeas but it is not there. Moreover, their portion sizes are a joke sadly. I mean you get six small pieces of traditional non bread when you ask for “bread” and pay well over a USD for it. Treat this establishment as more of a fine dining place (though the taste does not necessarily match up to it in all cases) than a normal restaurant and go to try Uzbek dishes without meat. To actually not be hungry at the end I had to end up eating more snacks later on. Last but not least, vegetable hanum was not very tasty, rice dish is good but the best one is Uzbek lagman soup, especially in winter.

Was the best meal in Samarkand. The dining rooms are nice and the staff extra helpful and friendly. Menu in English , with excellent Uzbek cuisine. The plov is particularly good - and can be found at later hours, like 930p, not something common in the area. Totally recommended also the langman and the manti.

What an amazing place! Great food, atmosphere and service. We’ve had some excellent vegetarian options. It was by far the best place we’ve been to

Great service and even better food! Very nice and clean place with great ambience. Staff is super helpful and friendly. We have ordered: beetroot soup, chicken shashlik and Samarkand pilaf. All dishes were very tasty! Highly recommended!!!

Recommended. Very accommodating staff. Food is delicious compare to those restaurants near registan square. Not crowded. The price is right for the food.

Friendly staff but unfortunately the food wasn’t to my liking and the prices are higher as it mainly serves tourists. I paid 161,000 for a Kazan kebab and a 1 litre coke (they only had a 1 litre for no sugar). The kebab was sitting in lots of oil and the chips were soggy from it.
