National Railway Museum York

Mentioned on
Rail museum
Museums
The National Railway Museum in York is a great place for kids to explore train-related artifacts from all over the world. There are huge locomotives, royal carriages, and miniature railways to enjoy, as well as play areas and exhibits on the history of rail transport. Pre-booking is required for some activities, but this is a great museum for families to visit.
I would say this is the best museum I visited in my entire life. The museum is Free to enter, but before you go you have to book tickets online. (Donations welcomed) There is a car park on the ground, you have to buy tickets from the museum, if you have a blue badge the parking is free. The museum is huge. You probably going to spend around 2 hours in the museum. The collection of trains and carriages are remarkable. If you you are visiting York, this is the place you should not miss, especially if it’s raining outside, you will be covered.

A must visit for any train enthusiast, but also interesting for anyone who has an interest in social history or 'days gone by.' The trains really are the centre piece, but there are also lots of items from railway stations displayed around the trains: trolleys with luggage, posters advertising destinations for holidays and many enamelled advertising and information signs. These items create a context for the trains and this helps to bring them to life, it's easy to imagine who would be travelling and what their experience would have been when you see earthenware ginger beer bottles left on a seat or a sack barrow with suitcases and tennis rackets on the platform. The turntable in the second hall is a good reminder that the site of the museum was a working maintenance shed. The archive hall is full of items associated the all aspects of trains, railways and stations. Some are quirky - the packaging from the last microwave cheese burger served - and other show how railway staff were trained or equipped. Everything you could possibly imagine associated with railways can probably be found here. There is almost too much to take in in one visit. The site is wheel chair accessible although one life was out of use when we visited. There is one lot of toilets located near to the entrance, these are modern, clean and well maintained. As a non-train enthusiast engineer, I found plenty to look at and found the hall housing the railway associated items really fascinating. We spent four hours here, but I can imagine those who are truly interested in trains could easily spend a whole day taking it all in. Small children and teenagers may not find much to engage them as the displays are factual with little to interact with or try out. There are cafes in both of the train display halls and they offer a nice choice of snacks and more substantial meals and the prices are not overly expensive. Book ahead as the number of people that can enter is limited by time slots and just turning up may result in a wait before you can enter.

Always a great place to visit when in York. Free entry(donations welcomed) and a great place for any train or history enthusiast! We last visited in 2014 and although not much has changed, a new display of locomotives and a revamp in a few of the halls are a welcome change. A side note, the station hall and gallery are currently shut due to extensive new development so our visit was slightly cut short but the main engine shed is still impressive.

Every boy's dream - and their dad's too! Great selection of locomotives, mainly steam, and lots of other railway-related items too. Good information displays and helpful staff. I particularly enjoyed the 20 minute talk on how a steam engine works, which was free, as was the entry. You just have to book ahead of time, although I think you can just turn up and wait if it's busy.

I recently had the absolute pleasure of visiting the National Railway Museum in York, and it was an experience that completely exceeded my expectations. As a history enthusiast, I was already captivated by the incredible charm of the city of York itself, but the museum took my appreciation of this historical gem to a whole new level! From the moment I walked through the doors, I was struck by the grandeur of the museum. The vast collection of old trains and its rich history effortlessly transported me back in time, igniting a deep fascination for the world of railways. The museum's ability to connect visitors with the past is truly remarkable. The displays were meticulously curated, and I was in awe of the range and variety of locomotives showcased. The attention to detail and the preservation of these beautifully restored trains made it evident that the museum's staff and curators are passionate about their work. It was truly a visual feast! One of the highlights of my visit was the chance to explore the famous Flying Scotsman locomotive. The awe-inspiring size and elegance of this iconic train left me standing in awe. Being able to marvel at its craftsmanship up close was an extraordinary experience that I will cherish for a lifetime. Moreover, the museum did an exceptional job of incorporating interactive exhibits that engaged visitors of all ages. From simulators that allowed me to experience the thrill of being in the driver's seat to informative and entertaining presentations, there was never a dull moment during my visit. It was educational and enthralling, catering to both enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. The National Railway Museum not only serves as a hub for train aficionados but also as a comprehensive educational resource. The museum's commitment to preserving the rail heritage and sharing knowledge with visitors is truly commendable. Beyond the museum's impressive content, its location in the historically rich city of York adds an extra layer of charm and allure. Exploring the vibrant city before or after the museum visit enriches the overall experience and allows you to fully immerse yourself in the fascinating history that permeates every cobblestone and building. I highly recommend the National Railway Museum in York to anyone seeking a captivating, educational, and memorable experience. Whether you're a railway enthusiast, a history lover, or simply someone looking for a unique and adventurous outing, this is an absolute must-visit destination. Trust me; you won't be disappointed! Thank you, National Railway Museum York, for the outstanding journey through time. My visit was truly unforgettable, and I can't wait to return for another incredible adventure!

Really loved this musuem, I'm not particularly interested in trains but this was just great! So much to see and do, you could spend hours in there. Loved the cafe, coffee was tasty and loved the merchandise you can buy. Each train was really well signed and its completely free to enter as they rely on donations! It is advised to get tickets in advance on the website but you definitely don't need to!
Rhian Jones — Google review
I like that the entrance was free, but parking all day was £10 also they asked you for donations. Nice place to walk around and educate yourself. Have toilets. Need to wait in line to enter if inside are too many people. Have coffee and food inside.
Ernesta St. — Google review
A great experience for adults with so many amazing trains to look at and read about. Could be better for younger children with more for them to do. Perhaps the museum could ask youngsters what they'd like to see / do - here's our son's suggestions 🤣 - Upside down model railway - Mini railway (or individual robot trains) inside which tours around the trains - Mallard experience (simulator) where you can push a button and choose which virtual train you'd like to ride - A big picture of the railways showing where trains are, tunnels etc. - Learn how to drive a train - Big blocks puzzle where you can make the shape of Mallard - Have models of each train going around that train The cafes are pricey, but well stocked ... and you don't pay to get in so we're more than happy to pay a surplus for food to help museums like this keep running their fantastic services.

Overall a good museum, plenty to see here if you've an interest in trains or just need ti keep the family entertained for a couple of hours. In June 22, it was still advisable to book online so as to regulate how crowded it gets. Whilst you can get free tickets on the website, it seems to ask for a donation ticket price of £5/adult. It is a big space and split into three main halls. One an old station layout with a cafe & plenty of seating. Interesting to see the old royal carriages and some eclectic rolling stock. In another hall (short walk), there are a range of nationally important & impressive engines including a Bullet train, The Evening Star and Mallard. There is also a steam engine here with massive sections cut away & painted so you can see how it works. Sadly there is no real meaningful explanation. Indeed explanation sheets/boards are minimal throughout the museum, which kind of lets down the whole experience somewhat. A 3rd hall has a really impressive load of old junk (memorabilia) all catalogued and stacked onto shelves. Again this could have more explanation of what has been collected/displayed. This is after all a National railway museum.
David Rees — Google review
The National Railway Museum provides a really fascinating day out, even if you are not a train fanatic. It contains not only locomotives and carriages showcasing the 200 years of railway history, from the Rocket to the bullet train, but also station signs and equipment (far more interesting than it sounds) model trains, insignia, personal stories and general memorabilia. The section showing royal trains from the Victorian era onwards I found particularly engrossing. It shows what was regarded as essential for travelling royalty but also encapsulates the development of railway carriages from their horse-drawn equivalent to the rather less ornate version we are familiar with. Refreshments are available and there is also a gift shop.
Gillian Pearson — Google review
Great for family’s. Old trains or modelling fans would be delighted here. Can touch a lot of old decent trains models here. Food, souvenirs, books. Can stay half of a day. Free entry. Must go if you re in Yorkshire.
Jack Kwong — Google review
First time visiting the museum. It is free entry and there is parking opposite the museum at £10. A good collection of trains inside but mainly for viewing. Probably 1 hour experience. You can get a car/train to the centre of York which is around £3 per person.
EI Loonat — Google review
The museum has real engine pieces, maintained at the highest standards. If you are a train nerd, it's got a lot of history and information and can even take up a whole day if you go into the nuances. Nevertheless, the visual imagery of the engine parts are nothing alike in the photos that you see. Perfect place to go with your family, as they've got a kids' play section. Toilets well maintained, cafe ✅ It's free and can be booked online.
Karthikesh Baskaran — Google review
Excellent 3hrs well spent, have not been for years...enjoyed every minute. Good for all the family especially if you like trains and their history. Plenty of memorabilia to see, goes from the start of the railway to today. A good display of Flying Scotsman's history. Possibly 3hrs is not enough to take it all in.
Martin Fenn — Google review
Loved this museum. Flying Scotsman, Mallard and many more famous trains displayed in their glory. Amazingly it's free entry. Great for all ages. Good food courts too. Only gripe is that in the main hall it is too dark to see inside the drivers cab footplates and passenger carriages, despite stairs up to them.

A wonderful muesum, with really history, which you can up close and see. The staff were lovely and the exhibitions stunning. My wife and I booked on line, very easy, and we hadn’t been since we were children (a few years ago!) so it was great to go back after a number of years (quite a few!) and revisit both our past and the muesum. Sadly we missed the Flying Scotsman…. But that’s life. If you are in York and have time don’t miss out on a wonderful place.

Great place for a visit young or old. Amazing history and engines! Welcoming and attentive event staff. Cafe food made us feel a bit ill, would eat elsewhere or bring your own. Otherwise looking forward to seeing this wonderful monument to history again soon!!

Super fun and interesting museum, lots of neat things to see and information available. Definitely plan to spend about half a day here and book ahead. When you get there, book tickets for the mini railway, they sell out quick! Food options were mediocre but the cafe in the main station and the Countess of York were awesomely set up. Unfortunately, the steam rides and the hands-on exhibits were closed when we went, but we'll look forward to visiting them in the future. Shockingly good for a free museum and a must-visit for anyone who likes trains!
Abigail Carey — Google review
Enjoyed our visit. Good selection of locomotives and rolling stock on display. Entrance is currently free with boxes for any donations. You are advised to book your entrance ticket online, prior to actually arriving at the museum. Car parking onsite with a disabled parking area closer to the main entrance. At the time of our visit, parking was £10 for all day. A lot of areas currently undergoing refurbishment/redevelopment, but this did not distract too much from the overall experience.
Paul Wright — Google review
What a wonderful museum! We gladly gave a donation and couldn't believe admission was free for such a large place to visit. There is the Royal trains, steam trains, Euro train and even a carriage over one hundred and seventy years old. You don't have to be an train enthusiast to enjoy this museum. A must see! You can pay £10 to park all day until 18.30, which allows you plenty of time to visit other attractions within walking distance.

It's one of the best Railway Museum I have ever seen. I visited the same museum last year November month and last week this year and to my surprise the whole museum is totally changed. Before it was direct entry but now free entry via a time slot which can be Pre booked on the website. Now the Museum is divided in to multiple parts. It is having very good collection of so many types of Railway engines. Now it is having multiple washrooms, multiple cafes with variety of food items. Good place for kids to spend time in so many toys & mini railway models. It is now have multiple souvenir coin machines also installed. It will take couple of hours to complete the museum now. A very good place to know the full history of Railways.
Rohit Patange — Google review
Free to visit but book tickets online beforehand. We used their car park opposite which was £10 all day. You have to pay in the museum, you get given a ticket with a code on it so you can get out. We spent a couple of hours in the museum then walked into York Centre which was about a 15 minute walk depending on how fast you walk. Get in the car park as early as you can as there are very limited spaces.
Gary Read — Google review
This was our first visit to the National Railway Museum in 20 years. We found the display of locomotives and carriages strikingly impressive, and there was a charming toy railway, a railway turntable and signal box with a video on operating signals. On the other hand we missed some of the highlights of earlier visits: Queen Victoria's carriage; social history montages explaining how railway travel opened up the possibilities of market gardening and holiday making; illustrated histories of the gradual development of a) steam and b) travel by rail; a children's section allowing visitors to experiment with the physics of rail travel (involving gradients, stopping times etc). Whereas the 'old' Museum offered enough to captivate a whole family, of varied interests and ages, for an entire day, the present Museum would primarily be aborbing to an avid railway enthusiast.

Great place to visit especially if you love transport or trains, Such a variety of historical steam engines diesel and electric locomotives, some amazing royal carriages lovely cafe on the platform. The great hall is impressive and facts can be found everywhere, The Ellerman lines cutaway give a great understanding of how steam engines work. If you're in the area definitely worth a visit, I have been many times

An awesome railway museum to visit. The Flying Scotsman is in presently (past few times I've visited, she has been out on tour). The VR experience is worthwhile. Pretty popular, so may be useful to book the VR in advance. Overall museum arrival was easy - free entry. The lab section was very well put together, teaching some excellent railway based scientific concepts.
Robbie Cannings — Google review
One of the best museums in the UK. Very popular. Much for children to do. Has a decent safe also. There is a library and archive - appointments are needed. Worth getting tickets in advance so that you can get in quicker. Great place for children. Worth the trip there.

This is a really interesting place whether you really like trains or not. There are some amazing trains to see including one of the worlds biggest plus Mallard, a world record holder still to this day. The exhibition of train memorabilia is fascinating, so much history. You can go inside a Japanese train and get up close to others too. It can get busy at times so get your tickets online before you go. We went on a weekday morning and it was reasonably quiet. Tickets are free but you can add a donation if you like.
Lesley Elding — Google review
Absolutely amazing value, entry is free when you book in advance but there are options to donate. I have never been particularly interested in trains but I found the experience fascinating, there were loads of different trains to look at from the very earliest trains all the way up to the most modern high-tech ones. The trains are very nicely presented with well-written descriptions. I particularly enjoyed being able to sit on the Japanese Shinkansen and watching a short film about its history. The cafe is very nice and the seats take up some of the museum space rather than being separate. I thought this was nice as you are able to have a coffee whilst sat next to some of the trains. It was by far the best value activity that I did on my visit to York!

A real gem in the North of England. The National Railway Museum is a brilliant place to experience and learn about Britain's railways, and some international railway history as well. The main exhibition hall has numerous locomotives, including a few famous ones. The other halls and sheds have other marvellous sights as well. Very handicapped accessible, and also a great place for children. Multiple cafes and areas to play on site. Conservation hall is excellent. Renovations happening throughout 2024 so check the website before visiting.

This is a great free museum to visit with an approximately 20 minute walk from the city centre. There's loads to see here and you could easily spend several hours walking and looking at the various exhibits. There's also a cafe and a great gift shop with some really nice items to buy. I'm not a 'train enthusiast' but still found this a extremely interesting place to go and visit and, don't forget it's free.
David Atkins — Google review
It's the first time we have been here, an excellent afternoon out looking at all the old trains and learning a bit about them. It's free to get in but the car park itself is £10 for the whole day so keep that in mind. My 7 year old really enjoyed finding the oldest train and getting to see inside of some of them. It's a good day out.

An amazing collection of national treasures located in the heart of York, one of Europes most beautiful cities. Good facilities for accessible needs and a decent cafe to rest whilst exploring the excellent exhibits. Home of the iconic Mallard, the museum is a must see destination when visiting York.

York Minster

Mentioned on
Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
York Minster is one of the most beautiful religious buildings in England and is a must-visit for anyone looking to explore Yorks medieval past. The cathedral, which was first built in the 7th century, was destroyed in a fire in 1069 but has been rebuilt many times since then. The building is vast, decorated with intricate stained glass windows and features interactive exhibits beneath its Undercroft exhibition.
Absolutely exquisite 😍😍 The workmanship! The craft! The detail. The light. The atmosphere. A must visit if anywhere near York! Don't forget to walk up along the boundary wall for a different view. Of the city and the Church. And an absolute MUST, at least for the experience, (bonus/reward is the view) is climbing up the winding stairway of the towers. Not for the faint-hearted or claustrophobic sufferers tho. Stairway and stairs extremely narrow and steep. All 275 steps!! But it's so worth the effort!
nyree jameson — Google review
An absolutely amazing experience. Incredible staff. Area is kept incredibly well. Walking throughout the structure feels surreal. Regardless of your religious background, you will find this visit to be incredibly rewarding. One can easily spend an entire day here. But even 90 minutes will provide a wealth of views. Ornate architecture and some of the best stained glass in the world. The size of the interior is overwhelming.
John Kadavil — Google review
From the moment you step inside and for many hours after, this cathedral is truly spectacular. The acoustics, the stained glass windows, the intricate carvings in the masonry and the massively high roof line just take your breath away. If you're in York, even for a short break, York Minster is an absolute must see.
Richard Gardner — Google review
One of the main things to see and visit whilst visiting York. Absolutely awesome and stunning building! Takes your breath away. The history of the building is incredible and has an underground museum, showing how its changed throughout the years and how they've saved and reconstructed it throughout the years. Give yourself plenty of time to see everything as it's a big building and you can easily get lost in it's history for 3-4 hours. Didn't climb up the tower, (275 steps) although would of liked to for the amazing views as there was a bit of a queue and its time allocated. But it was a fantastic and amazing experience and highly recommended.
Amrit Dubb — Google review
Beautiful imposing building on a mammoth scale. Well worth a stroll around and through the grounds. Undergoing renovation works so some areas are scaffolded but you can watch the stone masons at work preparing and carving stone for replacement. We didn't enter the building on this visit but it's top of the list for next visit!
Alan Bell — Google review
Initially I did not want to go inside due to the cost of £16pp entry. Tickets last a 12 months so you can visit multiple times and offer you lots to do inside, museum, gallery, free tours inside, etc turned out to be well worth the cost as internally it's magnificent and would now highly recommend this if you're in York. Beautiful cathedral with lots to see and do once Inside.

Visiting York Minster was an unforgettable and inspiring experience. The majestic architecture of the cathedral, with its towering spires and intricate Gothic design, was a breathtaking sight. Walking inside, I was struck by the sheer scale and artistry of the place. The stained glass windows, especially the Great East Window, were captivating, displaying a kaleidoscope of colors and intricate patterns. The Chapter House, with its detailed stonework, exuded a quiet elegance. The blend of architectural grandeur, historical richness, and artistic beauty made my visit to York Minster a truly exceptional and enriching experience.

What a breathtaking building....inside and out! I love York and its abundance of History and shops. All the years we've been going to York and never actually went to have a look at York Minster....until today. We're so glad we did and wondered why we'd left it so long, the exhibits and sights are really amazing, the Roman exhibit and the Crypt were exceptional. So much more than what we thought. Well worth the money.

Stunning to see. We were lucky that our group was permitted to tour York Minster alone, while the choir was warming up for a BBC special. They sounded heavenly and it really set the scene for our group as our guide gave us a wonderful tour. York is very walkable, with plenty of stores and cafes. Take time to walk the city walls near the Minster, as there are some awesome views of the Minster. Clifford's Tower is also within walking distance and worth a visit.
B Schmidt — Google review
The building's architecture and history was fascinating. The Tower Challenge (275 steps up two narrow spirals staircases) was well worth it for those who can do it. The underground museum was old and musty. My allergies prevented me from being there too long.

Huge queue to entry, buy ticket online, ignore time slot allocated, just go and gain access with the ticket. Beautiful church with high sealing and ornaments. Gladly wasn't destroyer in the WWII

The exterior was superb! The interior as well. We went on a Saturday, and you can buy tickets on the day. When we entered, there was an ongoing mass (wish we had known sooner; we could’ve attended it as well -not sure if it’s free to enter if you’re going to attend the mass). The cathedral was huge, and every detail inside was lovely, from the portrait glass windows and many more. Make sure to roam every corner of the monster to immerse yourself in history fully.
Jamie Marie — Google review
Visited October 2023: breathtaking, even though I didn’t go inside the outside is beautiful. There’s an area where you can observe the stone masons repairing parts of the building too

No visit to York is complete without seeing the Minster. It's a beautiful cathedral, but what I was most excited to see (and hear) was its recently restored Grand Organ. I attended an organ recital here and it was incredible. This mighty instrument has over five thousand pipes and dates back to the 1830s. I was chuffed I finally got to experience it at its best!
Small Gordy — Google review
Such a beautiful place! Worth the money! My friends and I went right after it opened and there was no wait time. We bought tickets there and got a student discount. It has such a beautiful history and so many rooms to go into. Worth stopping in for sure.

Of course if you are visiting York then you must visit the York Minster. It is truly magnificent from the outside and in! As you are paying, id 100% recommend joining the talking tour where you get a 1hr 45min detailed and informative tour of the cathedral and get to learn so much about the history of the cathedral and details you'd miss if not joining!
Despina — Google review
One of the top 3 cathedrals I've ever visited in the world. It's surprisingly large, with massively high ceilings and the most stained glass I've ever seen in one place. I highly recommend the guided tour, at no extra cost, that starts on the hour. They tell the cathedral's story, ups and downs, really well. Worth the 18 pound admission, and they have posters explaining how the money is spent.

Had a great time at the York Minster. The staff are friendly and helpful. They give you information about the church if you ask them. The crypt of St Williams is beautiful and serene. The whole church is just stunning. 😍 Do check out their astronomical clock, their eastern window. The stained glass art is gorgeous. 😍 Definitely recommend and will go again.
Jaison Joseph — Google review
A very nice and beautiful Place of worship. Very pretty glass windows and lots of things for the eyes to gaze upon. Didn't manage to make it up to the top of the tower but as the tickets last 12 months I will visit again sometime and explore again. There is a very fine Astronomical Clock which I found particularly fascinating
Jonathan webmonkeyuk — Google review
Great tour of the Minster (not a cathedral...more!). If you are reasonably fit, take the tower climb...TOTALLY worth it. I think the stained glass tour would be incredible too. York was awesome as was the Minster.

Absolutely awesome building. The history of the building is incredible. Well worth the visit. Give yourself plenty of time to see everything as it's a big building. I didn't climb up the tower as 275 steps up a spiral staircase gives my vertigo the wobbles! But it was a fantastic experience even without the climb.
Louise Thompson — Google review
First time visiting York Minster, so I chose the guided tour, I found this really informative and well worth the money. The Minster was great to see in all its glory. There was refurbishment work being carried out mostly outside, so it didn't interrupt the visit. I had a great time here if you go to York and have the time it's a great few hours we'll spent.
Anthony Beddis — Google review
We were lucky as a choir was rehearsing, and we had a beautiful impromptu concert. Our guide was a delightful lady. We really enjoyed our tour with her.
C.E. D. — Google review
The Minster is stunning. We also did the 'Crypts of the Early Minster' tour (additional £6 per person when we visited) which was fascinating, and limited to a very small number, ours was 6 people. This meant we had a great opportunity to learn from the experienced guide and see some sections of the (even older!) churches that lie beneath the current building.
Rosie Walton — Google review
Really beautiful architecture and glass windows, we even get a souvenir in the shop next door. There are even guides available at the front desk when they scan your tickets. It's better to get tickets in prior and students can even get discounts!

Extraordinary. Feels as if I'm thrown into the past as I'm exploring the buildings. I heard that at a certain time you can go to the rooftop and see the church bell along with the view of the whole city. Too bad I cannot go there when I visited since the wind is blowing wildly and they don't allow anyone to go up there. But definitely worth to visit. Also, don't forget to take some pictures.

Went twice because once was not enough. Absolutely stunning. There isn’t enough time in a day to look at all the details and find all of the cool things but it’s beautiful. You pay once and you can go back for a year. I will definitely be going back the next time I’m there. It’s incredible. One of my favourite places to date.
The Gal — Google review
Absolutely stunning. We thought York was more grand than Westminster Abbey. There was more intricate carvings and stained glass. It was very beautiful. The Crypt museum was remarkable in not only discussing the thousands of years of occupation of the area, but the immense restoration project undertaken to save the massive Cathedral.

One of the most stunning buildings I’ve ever visited. You can pay extra for tickets to go up to the rooftop. Beautiful views of York & the cathedral when looking down.

Stunning stunning stunning. The most beautiful building I’ve visited in the UK. Fairly expensive to get in (£18 + £6 for the tower) but worth it to see everything. A true work of art, above and below.
Robert Greenaway — Google review
Amazingly intricate cathedral, especially on the outside. The inside is also fantastic but nothing that much more special than other major UK cathedrals and abbeys, which makes the entrance price slightly expensive for what it is. Still a must see site if visiting York! Queue to get in on weekends and holidays, but worth ‘pre-booking’ a slot as this makes it slightly quicker to get in.
Matt Ward — Google review
Beautiful and tranquil. The jewel in the crown of York. Lots (700 years+) of history, and lots to see. Recommend a guided tour as the volunteers are so knowledgeable and passionate. Paid the extra to climb the tower (all 275 steps!) and the views are amazing! Definitely worth paying extra for the views (and the exercise!)
Rees Gidley — Google review
Weather made this weekend fabulous. Lovely city, friendly people. There is something for everyone. It is very busy. York races was great and not too expensive.
Moira Culling — Google review
York Minster is a wonderful place to visit. £18 for adults. Students at university in York get in free, as do children. Tickets last a year so you are free to return which is great as there is so much to take in. I highly recommend a tour as they are full of knowledge and take you to all the hidden spots of history that you may well miss. Try and go on a Wednesday as they have a coffee morning with delicious cakes and hot drinks and proceeds go to charity. Prayers are on the hour which are a reminder to take time to reflect and services are on throughout the day for you to join if you so wish. Don't miss the Undercroft Museum, it's been wonderfully done and seeing the base of both the Roman and Anglo-Saxon churches and buildings before the current Minster was in place is fabulous.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park straddles the Pennines and features some of the most stunning scenery in England. With plenty of hotels to choose from, visitors can find a venue that fits their needs perfectly. The park has a wide variety of attractions, making it the perfect place to take a break from everyday life.
Park up & go walking or cycling for a day in the countryside, the views and fresh are are lovely. Also dotted around you will find local visitor spots all over the Dales to enjoy (best to Google and search these locations before setting off, so you don't clog up the many narrow B roads due to miss-turns).

The Dales National park is without a doubt one of the best National parks in the UK with endless Dales to drive through and explore or if you are fit you can do one of hundreds of well marked footpaths. Something different at every turn in the road . It can be a bit daunting driving on the mostly single track roads with passing places for the less experienced driving so please remember that 😉 but I would definitely recommend a holiday in the Dales or a day out .

Great 10 mile 3.5hr walk (not round) past upper and lower reservoirs on Barden Moor. Parked over cattle grid near the sign. Simons seat in the distant, views for miles, lots of red grouse, had our lunch stop in the beaters shelter, windy but lovely 😎😁 water spilling out of the upper res, down the valley... I could've watch it all day! Part of Bolton Abbey estate so not sure dogs allowed (they need the grouse to nest 😕) but good paths to follow

One of the most beautiful National Parks I have seen in the UK. The countryside is very scenic, its peple are warm and welcoming. Full of hidden gems both food-wise and from a scenery perspective. The 3 peaks challenge is certainly worth doing, it was a pleasure meeting so many hikers along the circuit. The kind of place where everyone greets everyone and a sense of community is breathing through the air.

Great time outdoors. Beautiful weather, scenery and great company. The area is very dog friendly, but there are many farm animals that you pass through fields.

Malham cove and they have a guest visiting centre to park you car at £5.50 till they close. Park and cross over road and follow the signs. Where sensible shoes it's very uneven in some places. Keep going up and over once you have seen the first waterfall. Keep your dogs on leads.

Beautiful area to hike, drive or cycle through. Breathtaking views unless the weather is foggy, rainy and snowing like the day we visited 😉 Well worth the trip though.

Aysgarth falls in the Yorkshire Dales national park, is a great spot for a day out and what's even better is that it is completely free! Enjoy this 4.2-km circular trail near Aysgarth, North Yorkshire. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 1 h 0 min to complete. This trail is great for birding, hiking, and walking. kid-friendly water falls

It's on the outskirts of where I was born so I'm biased. If you want amusement arcades, racing simulators and popcorn, find it somewhere else. The dramatic landscape and beauty of nature here are breathtaking. It"s unspoiled wonderful and lovely. Go there.

The Yorkshire Dales is simply a beautiful place to visit. Stunning scenic walks with villages and Hamlets a plenty to visit too. Treat with respect , the landscape and the homesteads ...It's not a ' theme park. ..and for walkers, beware of the quickly changing climate ...the cold and rain can envelop you very quickly !!!

One of my favourite places to take in the UK. Roads are very quiet and the recent high profile Tour de France grand depart means the surfaces are very smooth. There are some challenges passes and finding refreshments is easy. Highly recommended.

Lovely area. Home of the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge. Also lots of other good hikes and waterfalls here. Lots of caves to explore too. Make sure you check out the local pubs and ales. Locals are friendly and helpful.

Took a motorcycle tour around the dales with a friend for the first time , and wow just stunning views. Roads are twisty and sheep are flocking to the noise, so slow and gentle to admire the views and pheasants with sun or fog equally pleasant . Will be back to admire it all again soon… what’s more to say the pics alone should will you to head the the area and enjoy. And get home after fully refreshed and revitalised …

North York Moors National Park

Mentioned on
National park
The North York Moors National Park is a charming expanse of high moorland and wooded river valleys, dotted with religious ruins and picturesque villages. Covering 1,436 sq km, it's one of the UK's 15 national parks and boasts over 2,200 km of public rights-of-way for those who enjoy walking or cycling in nature.
Must visit if you are in York. Its a day trip from the city with a nice scenic drive all the way. Love the every changing scene from farms to heather fields and so on. Many small towns with unique york-style buildings as well
Sea Chanthasarnviwat — Google review
It's a colourful time to visit the North Yorkshire. It's full of heather. Bog cotton is just coming out of season. However we were lucky to see some small clumps here and there. Saw a few grouse flying over and spotted a baby grouse by the roadside too. Spotted two dear as we were coming out of the National Park when we were on A171 driving towards Whitby.
Kumudu Studds — Google review
Stunning scenery throughout one of the most beautiful of the national parks. It is also one of the quietest and probably deserves to be better known. The landscape is mostly a high moorland plateau, cut through with a series of deep, narrow dales. There aren't many settlements in the centre of the park, just a few small villages and hamlets. The larger villages and towns, such as Helmsley, Pickering, Stokesley and Thirsk are all on the periphery; Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby are the main coastal resorts and very different from the inland towns and villages. Only a couple of main roads run through the park but the minor roads are a great challenge for cyclists, with steep gradients and sharp bends. Beautiful in the spring and summer, with wild flowers everywhere and especially the heather from July to September. There is loads of wildlife too.

Amazing views, only stopped briefly but will return when it’s warmer! There is a car park just off the main road where there is a coffee trailer. Great for taking in the views whilst sipping a cup of latte! There are I it about 40 parking spaces here though.

Always something to see & do across the North York Moors whatever you age or interests. Whitby, steeped in history especially mariners & of course, literature as the famous Dracula novel is set here. Also some other beautiful coastal towns such as Staiths & Robin Hoods Bay. Some lovely villages set inland as well. Good food to be found with plenty of places serving good quality & often local produce.

Had the most amazing day on the North York's moors, Rosedale Abbey tea rooms are an absolute must for their home made soup and fresh bread (not to mention a bid for my 30 year old OS map). The views around are outstanding, peaceful and give you a lung full of unspoilt fresh country air and a delightful tranquility of the sheep as they graze happily.

It's a beautiful scenic national park with lots of amazing various wildlife. There is always something to do when travelling in and around the national park. Lots of lovely villages to admire too. Great for bird watchers and wild animal lovers. My advise is when visiting please be mindful and DRIVE SLOWLY when driving on the roads up here. Look after the crossing animals and wildlife around... I loved seeing the wildlife and want to keep coming back to see them.

Lovely area to walk in. Today's walk was the Rosedale railway starting at Blakey Ridge carpark (1 kilometre from Lion Inn) circular walk turning right to start then heading for Rosedale East Cottages then up the hill to the ironworks and kilns. From there, past info boards in a steady climb back to carpark (15kms)
Andrea Susan Campbell — Google review
Beautiful scenery we walked the bit by the bank top kilns it really is a great place to go for a long walk as it goes on for miles. Free car park at the beginning however probably only fits about 10 cars and can get quite busy.
Elise Orme — Google review
Beautiful national park with a great variety of things to do. Like hiking? Well the coastal trails on moorland walks are spectacular, especially when the heather is out. You will spot various birds of prey, numerous butterflies and lots of other wildlife. Archaeology and heritage is also a great draw, from prehistoric standing stones at the Bridestones to the various post medieval industrial heritage, there is plenty to explore. The views of the coast is perhaps my favourite part however, especially if you snag some sunshine. And a short hop off the moor you have some great places to visit like Whitby. Well worth a visit, our national parks are real treasures!

Never disappoints. This time had the on board three course meal in the lovely buffet cars. All the fun of a steam railway with really good food and great service. Friendly, efficient and all done while on the move! (maybe they should open a sideline as waiting staff training school). Selection of starters followed by melt in the mouth roast lamb and then dessert ot cheese, all while trundling through lovely Yorkshire countryside. Even got to go on the steam train footplate. Top day out! 👌

The Stone Trough Inn, located in Kirkham Abbey, York, North Yorkshire, is a charming traditional inn with a rustic ambiance. The interior features exposed stone walls, timber beams, and open fires creating cozy nooks for guests to enjoy. The menu offers gourmet-style pub classics such as fish and chips and steak pie accompanied by Yorkshire beers on tap. Guests can also savor the picturesque views of the Derwent valley from the outdoor terrace.
This is a beautiful little pub in a wonderful setting, the staff are helpful and very friendly. The food is fantastic, well presented and reasonable in price considering the location and quality of the food. A pint of beer will set you back around five pounds and the average of a plate will set you back fifteen pounds a main. The beef and bone marrow pie is higher in price, at twenty pounds, but I am sure it would have been worth every penny. All in all it's a worthwhile stop, especially if driving long distance through the countryside.

I enjoyed a lovely lunch here. I had the plaice which was delicately cooked. Booking a table is easy using the website and worth doing as it did seem to be filling up quite a bit with visitors including those enjoying the outdoors in the area (walkers and cyclists). There is a very large car park. I was seated in the conservatory which looks to be a relatively recent addition and, due to planning, can only be accessed internally. It was heated which was of benefit today and it had decent views across the Derwent Valley.

I've visited here several times over the years but our latest visit (since the arrival of new management!) was special. My husband and I took our little dog out for a walk on Boxing Day and wanted to follow it up with a few quiet drinks at the pub. Alex and Shannon were only too happy to welcome us and the atmosphere was lovely, with locals and off-duty members of staff all chatting and supping together. The pub was decorated so festively and it looked great. They allow dogs and our young pup was fussed and treated like a queen. (The pub dog Tweed is a very good boy.) We passed several very happy hours relaxing in the bar and are eager to return to try out the food menu! Come here if you like good old-fashioned pubs with a crackling fire, friendly staff and what looks like a delicious new menu. You'll get a warm welcome!

Booked for lunch after a stroll along the river bank - it was quite busy - staff very polite and friendly just had to wait for a few minutes for our table as we were early. Quite a varied menu at lunchtime with the main menu also available. Two of our party had sandwich and two had the steak pie - the pies were delicious and proper pies and packed with steak. My friends said the sandwiches were delicious and looked great.

Extremely delicious ploughman's lunch- I might find myself daydreaming about it being honest.....I'm not kidding, generous slices of perfectly cooked cold beef, excellent piccalilli, warmed ciabatta, fantastic pork pies, two types of high quality cheese-apples, celery and more! We ordered a side of the biggest crunchiest onion rings - delicious. This was great and there was loads of it and it was only £34 for both of us including drinks! Highly recommend.

An absolutely fantastic Ploughman's lunch at The Stone Trough Inn. Roast beef on a Ploughman's is the future. The beef was meltingly tender, homemade picalilli was amazing and the batter on the onion rings was like glass. Fabulous food, plenty of parking and exceptionally dog friendly. We had an excellent pint of Peak pale ale and a lime and soda. Menu is varied and interesting, booking advisable at a weekend I would have thought! Staff were lovely and attentive. We were visiting on holiday but we'd be there every week given the opportunity!

Excellent Sunday lunch. Best Sunday roast I've had in ages - slow cooked but pink beef incredible. Wife's vegetarian meal (Beetroot Wellington) really good too. Generous portions and fantastic food, in a lovely setting - with friendly staff. Good beer selection too. Dog and child friendly as well. They have a small menu to choose from, but that's a good thing for a Sunday roast I reckon. Will definitely be back.

I had my wedding here at the end of May and couldn’t have been happier with the service, food and surroundings. Matt and his team went above and beyond to ensure we had a relaxing and enjoyable day. They were so helpful with setting up decorations and even blacking out a room for our baby to nap in. They were super friendly, made us feel completely at ease and even our guests were remarking how wonderful they all were. We had booked the venue completely blind, having never set foot in the pub, and I’m so glad we did. The food was really exceptional. I’m vegetarian, so it was important they got that side of things right too. You could tell they put thought into the flavour combinations as well as textures. I hear the meat and fish courses were also delicious (the Yorkshire puddings looked next level) and they had generous portion sizes. They were happy to accommodate our request for charcuterie in the evening - to go with our rounds of cheese ‘cake’ - and offered a wine tasting so we could choose wines they don’t usually stock at the pub. They allowed us to bring our decorations the day before (which they stored in their cellar and staff room) and had everything packed up and ready to go the day after. They really took the stress out of the day. The setting is also so beautiful and they really make the most of it with the conservatory. If it had been sunny, we could have had the roof open and windows down, but with the temperamental UK weather I was glad to have the option of having it all closed whilst still being able to see the countryside. The conservatory itself is licensed, so we had the ceremony in there and then Matt and his team turned it around for the reception whilst we had drinks in the main part of the pub (also extremely charming). Even based on the service alone, it was such value for money and some of our guests were even saying they hope to have an event there in the future.

My Friends came over from Birmingham and so I booked a table at this fantastic place. It was recommended to me by my brother who lives nearby. The Pub is surrounded by beautiful views and the interior is cosy and welcoming. The food was very high quality and the level of service from the staff was amazing, they went out of their way to make you feel welcome and nothing was too much trouble. My friends were blown away by just how welcoming and friendly it was here and also wanted me to mention that they too thought that the food was very high quality and the level of service far surpassed their expectations and definitely want to visit again. I can't recommend The Stone Trough enough. If you are visiting York or any of the surrounding areas and are looking for somewhere to eat or even just have drinks with family or friends then seriously go and give this place a try as you will not be disappointed.

Drinks were flat (cola) burger was raw and I like my meat pink informed them but the male server didn't even apologise or recognise the issue. Venue was nice but that was about it overpriced and didn't even take the service charge off even though we brought it to their attention about being dissatisfied.

Took my Father-in-law for a meal here last night. The food was excellent- we had two steaks both cooked differently, but to perfection, while my wife had the "not fish and chips" which was a very good portion of deep fried halloumi. Will definitely be coming here again

A cold experience. Would expect in a country pub on a cold wet April day a log fire lit, especially with logs stacked at the side of the fire. Some guests were heard saying it was cold, putting their coat's back on before food arrived.

Modern European restaurant The Star Inn The City with a riverfront terrace and all-day menu of Modern British dishes situated in Museum Gardens in York.
Lovely relaxed restaurant with great good and service. Had four courses and everything was sized just right to enjoy it without being overly full. Certainly not the cheapest restaurant but the quality was fantastic, and value off the scale. I will absolutely be back.
Richard Witton — Google review
An absolutely incredible venue with lovely decor, amazing food and some of the most hospitable staff. This was our second time going to the Star Inn having visited several years ago, and we knew the quality of service they provide is top tier. This visit didn't disappoint, with prompt order taking, extremely friendly staff and plenty of advice on selection when needed. The drinks were as amazing as ever. We tried a range or cocktails and wine, all of which were extremely flavorful and a great addition to our evening. Trying out all 3 courses, we were most impressed with the starters and puddings - the standout dishes being the pressed Thrikleby duck which was very rich and meaty, and the sticky date pudding for dessert with a variety of sauces and ice cream that it paired extremely with! A slight let down for the meal were the mains. Having been told that our lamb would come medium rare, it turned up with very little colour. Whilst this didn't detract from how tasty the dish was, it was slightly disappointing. The Nose-to-Tail pork was also a little bit dry in certain selections. This was brought to the attention of the staff, who were very apologetic and accounted for this and made up for it. A minor disappointed but in no way did this change how amazing the rest of the evening was. Will definitely be returning in future as this a wonderful venue with so much character; I would highly recommend for a celebratory/lavish meal!

Amazing meal with delicious cocktails and good service. I understand why this restaurant was noticed by the Michelin guide Can’t speak highly enough of this dining experience. From beginning to end it was really fantastic. Ordered the smoke old fashioned that was beautiful and complex and smoky. For my started i had the scallops that were plump with garnishes that really brought out the flavors. For my main, I had the maple bacon pork that was really moist and tender. I’ll definitely have to come back and try everything else on the menu!
Michael Moore — Google review
Mediocre and overpriced Sunday roast, unworthy of its Michelin accolade. We ordered the filet with the short rib and the cauliflower cheese and it was all subpar. The gravy tasted like it was made with gravy granules, the potatoes were not freshly cooked even a bit stale and the entire meal lacked flavour. At almost £60 per person (and due to the fact that it was featured on the Michelin guide), we were expecting something delicious but were so disappointed. An £18 roast at your local pub would have tasted the same if not better!
Michelle Benner — Google review
The restaurant is located on the North Side of the River Ouse, opposite the West wing wall of the bridge. See pics. Great location over looking the River with an outside area, but we were inside as was busy, tastefully set. The food, we had the halibut and lamb, was incredibly tasty. Compliments to the Chef as this really was a tour for taste buds. The subtlety of the fish dish where all the ingredients coming through was magnificent. The drinks took a bit a time coming out as it was a sunny day so was busy on the patio, but who cares when the food is this good.

We came here for an 80th Birthday breakfast celebration. There is a decently large car park not too far a walk from the restaurant, along the river which makes for a nice walk in pleasant weather. On arrival the entrance is through an arched tunnel which is quite fun, an outdoor seating area is on the left along with some outdoor rest rooms. Inside the layout is beautiful, upstairs are the toilets and a function area with the bar area laid out in front of you. On the right you have the large main interior seating area which is very aesthetically pleasing. There is a very large outdoor seating area overlooking the river which makes for a great setting in good weather. The staff were welcoming and friendly, we were quickly shown to our table with drinks provided. There is a decent selection of coffees, fruit juices and even some Virgin cocktails! The breakfast menu is wide in variety, the staff were very willing to allow us to make changes as well, there are also a number of side options should you wish to add ab extra sausage or baked beans etc. When the food eventually came it was amazing, all I would say is that service was quite slow…..we were bemoaning this a little but as stated the food when it came was excellent! Based on this experience I would certainly visit again and be happy to recommend it….I would advise to maybe expect a longer wait than you maybe used to…..but maybe that was a one off today? The staff were excellent throughout, no faulting them at all.

Food was niceish but expected better given the “brand” and price. We had Sunday lunch : good Yorkshires and veg, but pretty bland meat and stale-tasting roast potatoes. Beef looked like it might be better than the pork. Overall, this place is resting on its name and needs to up its game.

Sunday lunch was super tasty. Gorgeous gravy, veg was cooked perfectly, parsnips, carrots, 2 types of kale and an enormous Yorkshire pudding. Potatoes were described as cooked in duck fat but were a little disappointing as the outers were tough and not the crispiness anticipated with duck fat ( maybe reheated?) But still tasted good. Lamb loin was tender and seasoned beautifully and the beef my husband tells me was excellent.

Everything about this restaurant shouts quality. The location provides an idea setting at the side of the river, an old historic building given a modern and elegant transformation that delivers exceptional plates of food. We were there for breakfast and were blown away by the quality of ingredients, attention to detail “warm toast” and quality of service. I would highly recommend breakfast here and can’t wait to return one day to try out the evening menu.

My partner and I went during restaurant week, so this is based on their special menu for that period. It was overall pretty good, but nothing special, and okay for the price. It really suffers from York having some very stiff competition. I had the black pudding bon bons and pork meatballs, whilst my partner had the cod cheeks, potato pave and banoffee cheesecake. The black pudding and meatballs were both very tasty, but extremely dry and lacked sufficient sauce to compensate - the meatball sauce in particular was overpowering but surprisingly sticky rather than compensating. The cod and potato were both good, but the potato needed a bit more to be a main course. The cod was probably the next part, being really well cooked and not needing the separate curry sauce provided due to being delicious. The cheesecake was also good, with a good balance of flavours. The wines we had were nice, although I don't remember them specifically beyond being a fruity Malbec and a Rueda and whilst not shown on the menu they do 125ml glasses.

Such an odd place to eat. Came away thinking we won't eat there again.... Ultimately its a fairly expensive place to eat and we disnt feel it lived up to our expectations for the price point. We were sat at a huge round table for 10. Lots of room for each person, but couldn't talk to anyone other than those to my immediate left or right without leaving my seat. Pre ordered food weeks before. Half of our party arrived half an hour late. Food still painfully slow to come out for each course, although the restaurant was busy. Starter was incredibly tiny, basically 3 tasty mouthfuls not much bigger than a 50p piece. My main (ox cheek) was delicious. For the first time in my life I disliked the desert. The apple was in a solid green pastry like base, the toasted nutty crumb was not nice and I didn't like the icecream. Mixed reviews from the rest of our party, but we would go elsewhere next time.

I spent a pleasant evening in this place. The level and professional treatment of the waiters is noticeable. The plating was beautiful, although the truffle macaroni was tasteless. But overall, great and the dessert...out of this world. Went for a second time with work, and the date dessert was unbelievable. In general, classy place with attentive and professional service.

Bit Disappointing. I booked here for my partners 30th Birthday. I heard great things online and expected it to be a lovely roast. Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed. The service was really good and we were shown to our table in time. The place was busy so we knew it was popular. I ordered the beef roast and my partner ordered the lamb roast. The veg was an interesting choice. We didn't have your usual carrots, potatoes cauliflower cheese, peas, beans etc. You were given kale, sugar snap peas, 3 small roast Poatatos and this carrot puree. I found it Nice but my boyfriend didn't like it. When it came to the beef it was nice and tender but quite fatty around the edges. That put me off a bit! When my partner cut into his lamb he found it was raw inside! We don't like to complain but we thought if we're paying £23 for a roast and it's raw we should send it back. Of course our waitress apologied and sent out a whole new roast lamb. Which we shared. The Yorkshire puddings were lovely. For pudding we both had the apple crumble which was really nice. As my boyfriends South African he's never had a crumble before so it was nice for him to try. The waitress sent out a chocolate plate saying "happy 30th birthday " free of charge which I thought was a nice touch. For all you Gin lovers I'd recommend the york Blackberry Gin because that was the best gin I've ever tasted. It was a nice atmosphere especially as its so close to the Riverside. Perhaps the chefs were just having an off day but I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for a roast again. I think for the price they charge you could probably find cheaper in the city.

Finally i could try Reuben. From the first day of my visit to York, till now it was on my list. I guess i had pretty high expectation. First of all, the pastrami was insanely salty, that was the only taste that one could get. Their own version of mustard and mayonnaise are absolutely fine, the bread was totally ordinary. It could deserve 10£ unless the rest of the things were good.

It looks fancier than it tastes. So the famous Shambles Kitchen fairy fairy sandwich! The sandwich is good. But the bread in the bottom is very soggy when we get there. It doesn’t taste spicy at all. Don’t think we would like waste another £8 on this sandwich again.

I've wanted to visit for a while and finally got chance, the problem was deciding what to pick as each sandwich looks amazing. I went for a "Harry Trotter" pulled pork one and wasn't disappointed, the pork was tender and really tasty with a great smoked aftertaste. Salad was fresh and crunchy and the bread held it all together perfectly. The sparkler was a nice touch. Great service just added to the experience, I'm looking forward to the next visit.

I always stop here for lunch when I'm in York. The pulled pork sandwich is outstanding and the service is great. There's tables behind the restaurant in Shambles market where I can usually find seats.

Amazing quality street food. We had "Harry Trotter" pulled pork, juicy, tender and big portion, just right sauce. If you are foodie, I think this is a must-go when you visit the Shambles!

If you are looking for a sandwich to beat all other sandwiches this is the place, yes the price is on the more expensive side, but you are in the center of a city and its good food. What else would you expect You simply order at the window, you get given a buzzer if its busy, then you enjoy in the food in the streets the atmosphere doesn't get better than that. Also some of the best pastrami I've ever had...
The Starving Traveller — Google review
Good experience, little late on the review tried the guy Fawkes sandwich last year on our trip to york! It didn’t disappoint, will recommend it - it was really busy on that weekend and we couldn’t get through the queue on day 1 so had to go back the next day! Plan your eating time accordingly to avoid the disappointment if you do have to wait in a queue..

Been wanting to try this sandwich for ages now (the camilla) ever since I saw it on Instagram and wowwww it didn’t disappoint!! Packed full of flavour and tonnes of textures going on, so so good. Quite messy to eat so not one to grab on the go / if in a rush. Vegan heaven but they’ve got loads of meat filled options for the meat lovers too

First time visiting Shambles kitchen, and I have to say they were some pretty amazing sandwiches. That certainly curb that hunger whilst we were rambling round the town. Highly recommend calling in whilst on ya traves round York. Bit on the pricey side but you do pay for quality an freshness - everything is freshly prepared each morning. 😋 Only scored it a low atmosphere dude to no I door & out door seating, it's pretty much a grab an go place.

If I could, I would give 10 starts. Smelt the food as I walked past and just had to get something. Ended up getting the Harry trotter. Whitch is pulled pork. Card only, which is not a problem. But it's super amazing food. They put a sparkler on top with is a nice touch

This place had me yearning for their sandwiches from the moment I passed, You can smell here from a street over , Every time, I'd have either eaten, had plans, or a queue as long as the ghost merchants I got the Dame Judy Hench, Had a lovely chat with the woman working there and was given a sandwich that looked like the picture Needs no guesses to say it was absolutely devoured, and I'm now planning a trip back to york just to try the rest of the selection

Absolutely the best street food. I stopped by twice, first for the “Harry Trotter” Pulled Pork sandwich, which to my surprise, came with a sparkler tucked in for fun. Talk about a memorable experience. My 2nd visit was for the “Dick Turpin” Beef Reuben. Also a great sandwich with ample mustard and pickles. This is my go to spot for street food in York. Next time I visit, I’ll be stopping by.

Amazing food, best Reuben I've ever had. Staff were very friendly, and entertaining listening to them singing Lady Gaga whilst working. Will make this a must visit every time!
Joseph Ward — Google review
Any sandwich that comes with a sparkler in it, has me at hello. Luckily the sandwiches aren’t just style over substance- god those guys make a great sarnie. We got the Beef Barbacoa and the Reuben. Both sublime, made with care, thought and precision. Were they “cheap” sandwiches? No. Were they worth every penny, absolutely 100% yes. Stacked, flavourful, perfect. Will definitely visit again.

Stumbled across this while exploring the shambles for the first time, boy was I lucky! Such an awesome sandwich (got the Reuben), made dead quick and I was able to watch the process through the window! Loved it!

This bar is a place where you'll find unique and hard-to-find Belgian beers. It's also home to a big selection of world crafted beers, large portions, and reasonably priced pub food.
Great pub above a shop with biggest variety of beer I've ever seen. We didn't eat here, but wished we had as the food looked great. Beer selection brilliant and well kept. Full of character. We will definitely be back.

What a brilliant place, beer and spirit shop downstairs and restaurant upstairs. Beers all reasonable prices with locals and tourists purchasing whilst I was there. Nice to see so many local brands represented. The restaurant and bar is upstairs, lots of beers on tap and in the fridge. Or you can buy in the shop then take upstairs to drink, so the choice is massive. Liked that there was various price points for all budgets. Loved the medieval character of the restaurant upstairs and was greeted by two super friendly staff who were really welcoming. Amazed at the amount of food produced out of the small kitchen. Well there are cheese boards and Trembling madness ones. Looked beautiful and so much food, made with all different cheeses that were gorgeous. Grapes, fresh bread, lots of accompaniments that all paired with the cheeses lovely. The pies also looked great which the people opposite were having. They do breakfast from 10.30, then after 12 Various platters, pies, sausages, burgers plus smaller dishes and bar snacks. If you want to go somewhere with great food, generous portions, wide selection of beers and a great atmosphere, then I would highly recommend.

I highly recommend the House of the Trembling Madness if you're ever in York. This lovely pub is located upstairs, above the shop. Check out their daily specials, particularly their stews. I had their venison stew which was delightful. Vegans and Vegetarians - there are options for you as well. We also ordered the veg sausage with mashed potatoes and peas. Yum! Pro-tip: try to visit on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

A beautiful bar above a drinks shop. Totally worth visiting even for one drink just for the unique atmosphere !! Bar is small, so service is best they can offer with the space available but does make it a little inconvenient. Not tried the food yet. An estranged selection of beers/ciders even for the UK, but I found one I like to my UK palate as a lager drinker. Very worth visiting!!
Donkey B — Google review
Lovely but small pub upstairs, set in a lovely old building. Most people seem to only stop off for a swift half so tables become available quite readily. And with a mind blowingly excellent shop downstairs!
Mike C — Google review
Discovered it by accident and I’m happy I did. You enter and it’s basically a mini market with tonnes of beer all in excellent prices. Go upstairs to the small pub for superb beer selection and a small kitchen where the guys will cook huge portions of excellent food. Honestly they are huge and super cheap and tasty. Loved the ambient, loved the beer and you have to try it
Dimitris Moysidis — Google review
Like stepping into the past with craft beer, candlelight and hunting trophies on the wall. Stopped in for a pint of craft beer and wasn’t disappointed with a caramel stout. Reasonably priced as well. The atmosphere is unique, with its wooden pews, exposed beams and lit wax candles. Staff are knowledgeable and welcoming. Absolutely worth a visit. And, don’t miss the shop on the ground floor!
Michelle Morgan — Google review
Gem of a pub upstairs from the well stocked off licience with an extensive drinks selection. Including some excellent Belgian beers. The food is homemade and very tasty and filling.
Paul Gurden — Google review
This is a bit of Hike up flights of stairs but worth the effort. Its not a massive room and can get quite busy. Ales to choose from on a board which is constantly updated. Plenty to look at on the walls, great staff who were very patient. We did not eat here but the food coming out looked excellent. As far as we could see it was being preped behind the bar in the smallest 'kitchen' area I have ever seen. But it was all done without fuss. Its got to be worth a visit by everyone - Just give it a go, take it all in and leave trembling

What a fantastic strange weird place, love it. My wife and i called in for a look around the shop and noticed upstairs there was a bar, so we just had to try it, so glad we did. Very friendly staff and great beers, what more could you want. Can't comment on the food as when we were there no one was eating but looking at the pictures on some of the reviews it does look nice. Highly recommended and will be going back when we are next in York

Great quirky little pub upstairs from the shop.. Very individual style, greaat food and wine selection, many craft beers also.. Definitely will be going back
Adrian Doyle — Google review
We were recommended this place as a weird and wonderful experience that we must check out when in York and it couldn't have been more accurate. It's definitely different to what a normal pub is. You enter on the ground level with every bottle of spirit that you could possibly imagine on offer to buy. If you go down the staircase there is even more bottles of spirits in display cases. If you go up the stairs there is a bar, serving the majority of what was on the lower levels. The staff are really friendly and offered detailed suggestions and recommendations. Check it out if in York.
Number Nine Studios — Google review
The shop has an incredible selection of beers and spirits! Upstairs the bar is Old World, Game of Thrones vibe - wonderful to sit in and enjoy drinks! We ordered some great beers and the bread and dips which was delicious!
Chris Park — Google review
Great place, was told about it by a friend. Said where it was as easy to miss if didn't know it was there. Didn't have anything to eat, but the food looked good. Atmosphere was ace and it is a very quirky place, oh and the selection of beers and spirits in the shop is brilliant. Still trying to figure out what to buy. 👍👍
Boof Edge — Google review
We did not eat at the bar but did buy some bottles of Belgian beer in the shop below. Would definitely go back for food as it looked very good. Note the stairs to the bar are steep so if someone has mobility issues this might be an issue.

Amazing place with pub on the first floor. Great food and including vegetarian and large range of drinks. Stunning interior with original low beams and wattle & daub walls, but not one for those offended by stuffed animals and animal heads and skins. They also have 2 rooms available for overnight stays. Good location right in the heart of this great City. Ground floor is a well- stocked liquor shop with ranges of beers, wines, spirits to mind boggle. Fantastic!
Charlotte Moore — Google review
If you want to find the bar, head through the many shelves of cans to the staircase at the back! Once you find it, it's super cosy, lovely high ceiling, exposed beams and great animal head collection. Nice selection of cask and keg beers, you can also buy anything from the ground floor and drink in if nothing on tap takes your fancy. We'd be back for sure 🍻🍺🍻
Mark R — Google review
An interesting layout in a very old building, the downstairs is a store with spirits, beers, and other items for purchase and the pub is upstairs. High ceilings with large, ancient oak beams peak where a huge iron candelabra-like light fixture hangs imposingly above the tables. On the largest wall at the end of the room hang about 15 mounted animal heads of unknown age, including a massive pig, a wild boar, deer, antelope, and other species that watch you as you drink and eat. The boys at the bar were quite full of themselves and neither very friendly nor helpful. I was told that I had to order drinks and food at the bar and had to pay each time, so I ended up with three credit card payments when one would have sufficed, but that was probably too complex for them to figure out. We started with a pint of cask ale and a shandy, then I had to go back to the bar once we figured out what we wanted to eat, a Cheese Platter (€17.50) and a Steak and Stout Pie (£11.50) with mashed potatoes and mushy peas. The cheese platter looked quite impressive at first glance, but once I removed the four thick slices of bread, the bowl of coleslaw, three apple quarters, a bunch of grapes, pepperoncini, olives, girkins, sage, apple cider jelly, and butter from the board, the remaining small chunks of cheese were far less than imposing. Not much of a cheese board, but it was okay, nothing to write home about. The steak and stout pie was fairly big, but the pastry was thick and there was not very much steak or stout in the center. However, the accompanying mashed potatoes and the bowl of mushy peas were bountiful. The pie tasted good, the potatoes and gravy hot, and the mushy peas very tasty. I had to go back to the bar for another pint and credit card charge before we finished and left somewhat satiated. In all it was ¨OK¨, nothing special, and I doubt we will return our next time in York. Customer service seems to be lacking when it comes to Generation Z. Maybe it is a lack of proper upbringing or inadequate training, I am not sure which, but this was a recurring theme during our week in England. and something I had neither experienced poor service when I lived in the country nor during our many visits in years past. Very disappointing. ComabtCritic Gives The House Of Trembling Madness 4 Bombs Out Of 10 ... More Bombs Are Better!

The stew was hearty and flavourful. But it qas a little too salty. If they could dial down the salt it'd be perfect. The pub is small, so be prepared to wait. Service is typical pub style service.

The Magpie Café is a great place to go for British fish and chips. The service is fast and accurate, and the fish is lightly battered, crunchy and flaky on the inside. The fries are perfect too - be sure to try the Dandelion & Burdock soda!
Super clean, friendly staff, knowledgeable staff! Fish dishes looked amazing. But we enjoyed the ham, egg, pineapple and chips. The vegetarian option of goats cheese salad. Ham was super tasty, chips amazing and the goats cheese salad, so tasty! Enjoyed a vintage Sherry trifle, sadly no photos of the apple crumble as hubby dived in before I could take a picture. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Delicious and great value for what you get. Huge portions of tasty local seafood from off the coast of Yorkshire. Seafood platter to start is lovely and you get a really wide range to taste. They also do gluten free fish and chips, perfectly cooked. Staff really nice and helpful. They queue out the door for a reason!

Visited last Easter Sunday evening, we hadn't booked but a lovely warm welcome and seated straight away. We ordered and drinks arrived quickly myself and hubby had starters and mains, prawn cocktail and fish bites 1st then scampi and huge cod for mains with extras. Our waitress was attentive and genuinely lovely, giving informed information about dishes on the menu. The cleanliness of venue was sparkling, toilets excellent, service 5 star. Highly recommend visiting, ive told all my friends who were visiting whitby and posted photos on my social media to highlight this gem Well done x

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal; Could not fault a single thing! The staff were very friendly and everything was delicious. They accommodated my shellfish allergy very well (clearly marked my food to avoid cross contamination). In addition, the winter menu was great value (3 courses for £22.50pp). Would return without a doubt!

Very professional and friendly staff. We were lucky to get a table upstairs, great view. The food was absolutely DELICIOUS. We ordered regular fish and chips (haddock) with mushy peas. They had some scrumptious desserts but we were totally full. Maybe next time, as we will definitely be going back! Making my mouth water now just thinking about that lovely crispy batter!!

This is some of the best seafood I have had in the UK. The oysters are unbelievable, the crab dishes are succulent and flavorful! My dad had the vegan stroganoff which he enjoyed a lot. My partner also loved the classic fish & chips. I would recommend booking in advance as they are very crowded.

No questions about this place winning; definitely worthy the awards they keep receiving… Probably one of the Best cod, chips, mushy peas in North Yorkshire. The batter was light and flavourful, chips were beautifully cooked/fried (crispy edges), mushy peas were tasty as well! I tried grilled plaice and it was cooked to perfection, buttery fish and delicious with a fresh salad to go with it. Very good ambience, excellent service even when we entered during closing time. Impeccable! Location is also very convenient… Returned to the place and I tried Lemon sole and will return again for the crab dishes, scampi and seafood chowder. Seafood heaven for a seafood lover.. True to word, “always fresh, never frozen” Returned a third time for crab bisque and crab&chips… AAAmazing! 🦀 Back again for grilled halibut and seafood pot… FRESH and BEST! Couldn’t be any better… And again for grilled cod and hake with crispy fried whitebait, prawns in butter-garlic sauce And another visit for lobster and grilled herbed hailbut A BIG thank you to the whole team @Magpie for the fresh catch, delicious meals and wonderful service.

No doubt, an award recipient. Highly recommended. The queue is worth it. The fish and Chips can't be missed. It's crunchy on the outside and tender on the Inside. Had the 'magpie fish pie' as well and it was awesome. Perfect!!! Join the queue! Don't hesitate

Probably the best complete meal we’ve ever had. Started with pickled cockles and mussels, then a seafood platter, then lemon sole deluxe, haddock and woof platter, garlic prawns with garlic potatoes polished off with a coke float. Simply unbelievable.

Could not fault it. What better place to have our wedding anniversary meal while staying in Whitby. Fabulous waitress serving us throughout. Food was delicious. Husband had cod and chips and I had the crab salad. Ample portions to suit the heartiest of appetites. Good wine selection too.

A real gem if you like seafood or even if you're with someone who loves seafood. The focus here is the food, the setting isn't fancy or gimmicky and the menu, while extensive is without any unnecessary frills. For a fish restaurant, the vegetarian options were excellent and equally well designed and executed. The dishes are largely simply prepared from fresh ingredients and presented without fuss. All the staff were genuine, warm and welcoming with a good knowledge of the fare on offer.

Wanted to say thank you for such a beautiful lunch meal on Monday. Myself and my grandparents had a lovely lunch. The menu is plentiful with so many delicious options. We never felt rushed or hurried. Huge lovers of the Magpie and we will be back

Fish and chips was good with a crunchy batter but the service was very bad. For some unknown reason, the waitress asked our order multiple times and made the process a little stressful. Another guy who looked like he was the chef or works in the kitchen came out, stood there and just stared at us with the worst RBF ever. I don't think we did anything wrong besides giving this place business and I don't know why we were treated this way. The food is definitely not good enough for me to come back despite this service.

Our family of four visited here after a recommendation and wasn’t disappointed. The staff were friendly and welcoming but not in your space. We came for fish and chips but the menu was varied and offered something for everyone including vegetarian. We had a large haddock, small cod and two children’s menus with curry sauce which was a little fruity for my personal taste but still nice. The dinning room and bathroom was spotless with view of the harbour from 1st floor. It is best to book as it was almost full by 1pm, would I go again yes.

Scrumptious! Second time visiting here and it always hits the spot. It is very popular which is understandable as it’s super flavourful! My only advice is do book before! I ordered the samphire and shallots and the halloumi burger. Everything was fresh and flavourful. Those who I was with who eat fish said it was cooked to perfection. Definitely visit when in Whitby as you won’t regret it! Restaurant and restrooms are super cleanly.
Lu Young — Google review
One of the best fish&chips I have ever had! The fish was not salty and everyone can use as much salt or vinegar as they desire. If I go here next time, I will order fish and chips with 2x mushy peas, because they were so tasty and I would also add gravy.
