Umbria

Umbria is an Italian region bordering Tuscany, Lazio and Le Marche. Often called the country's green heart, it’s known for its medieval hill towns, dense forests and local cuisine, particularly foraged truffles and wines. Hilltop Perugia, the regional capital, is the site of medieval Palazzo dei Priori, housing the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria art museum. Pedestrianized Corso Vannucci is the focus of city life.

Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi

Mentioned on
Basilica
Sights & Landmarks
The Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi is a historic church and Christian pilgrimage site. It is situated on a hillside and features remarkable Gothic architecture adorned with medieval artwork. Originally built as an ancient hospital, the Palazzo del Monte Frumentario, it now houses two separate churches stacked on top of each other. UNESCO recognizes this architectural masterpiece as a World Heritage Site since 2000.
This cathedral is an awe-inspiring place! All the frescos by Giotto are masterpieces. The place is steeped into history, religion and significance. Well worth the daily trip from Rome.
Hugo Pedro-Martins — Google review
A tranquil beautiful place. The building was quite overwhelming in its quiet magnificence. So disappointed not to be able to take photos but totally understood. The ceilings around the altar are so breathtaking in their beauty. The architecture and different painted scenes are complex and overwhelming in the skill seen. Some of the best I have witnessed in my journey to Rome and Assissi. Italy's architectural gifts are blessed. The crypt where the remains of St Francis lies is small well lit staffed and busy. There are pews to rest upon to enjoy moments of quiet reflection and candles can be purchased which are lit after one's departure. The views from outside the Basilica are far reaching and splendid. A place to hold in the heart.
Carole Dyehouse — Google review
The Basilica of St. Francis is marvellous and mystical place, bringing together a number of renaissance masterpieces and an extraordinary architectonic complexity. Cimabue, Giotto, the Lorenzetti brothers, Simone Martini – the greatest artists of the 14th Century, have painted frescoes on the walls and ceilings of this place. An obligatory destination for believers and non-believers alike, appreciating art and architecture.
M. Maietta — Google review
We enjoyed walking the streets of the little village of Assisi. Assisi was the birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan religious order in 1208. Papal Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi was where St. Francis was born and died. The Basilica consists of an upper and lower sanctuary, where St. Francis is buried. The church is decorated with gorgeous geometric designs, frescoes painted in many colors, some with gold stars on a blue painted background. The best is to hire a private guide, and I recommend this, to understand the historical significance of this holy site, but I used my phone to get the right info.
Donato A. Mura — Google review
This was my second time to come here, and the experience is surreal. The serenity of the place, the architecture to marvel at, everything comes together. A place to go for the religious. Take time to visit and reflect on the life of Saint Francis.
Enrico Chua — Google review
The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is a truly awe-inspiring place. The architectural beauty and grandeur of the basilica are simply breathtaking. The spiritual atmosphere and rich history make it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a profound and moving experience. A remarkable testament to the legacy of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Erik Hagen Nymoen — Google review
A beautiful church with an interesting history. It was built in the 13th century on a hill where death sentences were carried out, known as Hell's Hill. Later the name was changed to Paradise Hill (after the canonization of St. Francis). Here is the tomb of St. Francis. When visiting the basilica, it is worth strolling the streets of Assisi. However, only 8 km away (approx. 20 minutes by car) there is another Basilica with an atmospheric, tiny church inside, rebuilt by St. Francis.

Such a holy and magnificent cathedral to visit. This was one of the most emotional visits. You can feel the presence of the saints in this cathedral. You feel safe and peaceful. It’s full of valuable objects from the ancient times. I wished that we all could be like Saint Francesco!
MOHE FLORENCE — Google review
A historic and amazing basilica, obviously a must visit while you are in Assisi. Must visit both the Inferiore (lower) and Superiore (upper) basilica areas. The Inferiore piazza is quite large as captured in these pictures. The basilica superiore is so peaceful and serene, true to the nickname of Assisi, the city of peace, no wonder a UNESCO a World heritage site. If you have only a day to spend here, would recommend visiting the basilica in the evening hours, as you can make a the most the most out of it with the spectacular views during the sunset hours from up top of the whole area and the valley.
Localizer — Google review
Beautiful sanctuary, it is really amazing to walk around and see how beautiful it is inside. It has high and lower levels. In the lower level, you can find the tomb of Saint Francis de Assisi. It was the most spiritual place I visited recently. There is also a shop downstairs you need to go straightforward up to the end of the high level then take the stairs to go down. To find the Basilica you have to walk 15 minutes but there are a lot of shops around and restaurants, a good tip is to go early in the morning to enjoy the place and walk through the medieval small roads. You can find parking inside the town or outside in the public parking. Really amazing place!

Duomo di Orvieto

Mentioned on
Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The Duomo di Orvieto is a Gothic cathedral located in the city of Orvieto in Italy. It was founded in the fourteenth century as a response to a Eucharistic miracle that happened nearby. The cathedral has beautiful frescoes and mosaics on its gold facade, and is one of the top tourist destinations in Italy.
The history that involves this amazing architecture is fabulous. You can see the old testament and the new one carved on the walls of the entrance of the church. A really beautiful place and full of history. Hire a tour guide so you can learn more about it.
Jonatan Almanza V. — Google review
Spectacular building! Very unique. Much of the attraction can be seen from the outside but I think the €5 entrance ticket is worth it as the altar, chapels and organ inside are beautiful. Nicely preserved frescos. The entrance ticket also gains you access to a small museum and the space below the church. The highlight of Orvieto.
Stephanie Malone — Google review
Awesome experience. You will be amazed with the beauty inside. It’s so picturesque and something to see. Make sure to see the organ and pipes up front. I can only imagine hearing it played. The stained glass windows offer some great photos. Take time to reset your own mindset before you exit.
Kentrell Charles — Google review
A magnificent church as main feature of this medieval city, with splendid architecture and beautiful surrounding buildings of the time. The black-white layered marble throughout the facade gives it a majestic character found in similar Tuscan cities.
Raymond Dimech — Google review
I was impressed by the scales of the cathedral. The art inside can be compared with Milan's cathedral. Number 1 to visit in Orvieto.
Християн Пенев — Google review
Very beautiful Duomo / cathedral steeped in history and art. Can see the alabaster windows and stained glass inside. Floor is not the original mosaic like in Siena. The facade is gorgeous for those who don't want to pay the 5€ fee. But fee also included inside art painting and sculptures, tombs underground and Orvieto tunnels tour. Light a candle.
Flow Joe — Google review
Absolutely beautiful cathedral in the heart of Orvieto. A must visit when in Orvieto. But be respectful. Shorts and dresses must be to your knees and shoulders must be covered to be admitted. Hats for men AND women are to be removed before entering.
Rob B. — Google review
The cathedral flagstone was laid on 13 November 1290 but work (reconstruction, redesign) continued into the 20th century. In fact, the beautiful bronze doors were added in 1970. The side walls, alternating layers of local white travertine and blue-grey basalt stone are a stark, but beautiful contrast to the glittering gold-accented front facade. Unfortunately, we could not enter the church owing to a funeral. A large rose window and golden mosaics, and a wealth of sculpture festoon the front. The cathedral has five bells, dating back to the Renaissance.
Sharon Hanson — Google review
Very beautiful cathedral. Worth to go inside. Should check the opening hours, they change throughout the year. At summer it closes at 19:00

THE BIGGEST CHURCH I'VE EVER SEEN ATOP A MOUNTAIN!!!!! Orvieto was really something to see the town is atop a mountain they have a cable lift up mountain and on top you can take a ride on a trolley that takes you to different parts of Orvieto. Each hamlet has its own flavor, even a mid evil section ! But when you come to this church, it's mind-blowing! Beautiful! We took the trenetia train from Rome for about an hour twenty minutes. Great place to get out of Rome for a day. You will love it! Just be aware of the train schedule tricky. The trolley is 9 euro and lift two and half euro well worth it.
Allen Gordon — Google review
A very impressive gothic cathedral. Free parking space nearby. Not very crowded.
Barış Subaşı — Google review
Wow wow wow! This is a true beauty. Please go see this if you’re in the area. It is in my top 3 of all “Dom’s” in Italy, the design is absolutely insane and to think it took 300 years to build. I’m so thankful my friend dragged me out here and to the well. Worth it for a day trip 100%
StewartGerard — Google review
One of the most beautiful cities and cathedrals. It is so stunning. Spend a day seeing Orvieto. 😍
Jean Sanoski McArthur — Google review
Possibly one of the most impressive cathedrals in Italy - With it’s breathtaking facade and prominent location / stunning. Also the frescos and stained glass are perfectly preserved/restored. Also Attending a concert here can be a life-changing experience.
Paix SurTerre — Google review
Nestled in a quaint little hill town, this duomo is spectacular. What is the difference between a cathedral and a Duomo? They are in fact one and the same! Duomo is an Italian word for cathedral, which is a Catholic church where the bishop resides. I would not like to live in a world without cathedrals. I need their beauty and grandeur. I need their imperious silence. I need it against the witless bellowing of the barracks yard and the witty chatter of the yes-men. I want to hear the rustling of the organ, this deluge of ethereal notes. I need it against the shrill farce of marches. Pascal Mercer
Milton Siegele — Google review
I was there for a brief excursion in 2023 and decided I had to go back to explore and learn more so we stayed four days in a 1000 year old B&B and fully explored and discovered so much more of the town as well as " The tunnels" The cathedral is simply incredible, we enjoyed Easter services there too.

Located in Via dei Priori, this charming establishment opened in June 2010 and is dedicated solely to sourcing food and drink from the Umbria region.
Incredibile food at a reasonable price. The attention to the locally-sourced ingredients is incredible. This is the third time we come here over the years and I am always impressed! Definitely the best place we tried in Umbria! The truffle pasta is perfect! Made with real delicate truffles and not the artificial oil you get in most places. 5++! Keep doing what you are doing!!

Do not skip this place when in Perugia, the food is simply divine here. The pasta, the lentil soup, the liver pates everything. Wish we had more days to taste everything there was on the menu. Tha staff is also nice. Make sure to book in advance as on a Saturday night it was full.

Delicious food combined with great service. Hat off both to the chef and wait team. Can see why this restaurant is popular. A good menu that also sensibly priced too. Yummy wine by the glass as we dint want much, though they have an extensive wine list. Also have great selection to buy too. Oh and not to forget really good cafe to finish off lunch. Definitely returning next time in Perugia

This was one of the best places we have visited in Italy - super focused on local dishes and specialities, with regional wines available too. The truffle pasta in particular was very good. If I had had more time in Perugia, I would have returned to try more of the dishes. It’s also a nice location with two large outdoor terrace in the medieval part of the city.

Beautiful food in a lovely, quiet location in the city. The boar starter was incredible and went well with the recommended wine, which is available by the glass 🍷 The pork was beautifully cooked and went well with the excellent roast potatoes.

Starter was so poor, only 2 slices of eggplant. Maine courses were too small. It’s an expensive Restaurant but Food is not perfect. Atmosphere is nice, not too much light.

Want to start by saying that Condé Nast should remove this restaurant as somewhere to visit in Perugia. We were denied a table the first time we tried to eat at this restaurant and watched as the server provided someone else without a reservation a table right after us. Understanding the dilemma we made a reservation for the next day. The service surprisingly became worse. Wine bottles were slammed on the table, gluten free options were not respected, and patrons open started at us as we ate. I wish we had a better experience. Thankfully the other restaurants that we visited in Perugia provided excellent service.

A very good osteria with fresh handmade pasta and reasonable prices:) You can tell that they use local, fresh and high quality ingredients. We booked a table in advance (always a good idea) They have a good collection of local wines to purchase as well.

Excellent food. The best dining we had in Umbria. Order the fiorentine steak that they cook on an open fire. Wow. And the truffle pasta, crostinis and taramisu. Walter and his staff were excellent hosts. Friendly. Warm and just made sure we had a great time. Ambiance is elegant and welcoming and without pretension at the same time. Make a reservation.

One of the best T-Bone fiorentina I ever had. The tagliata di manzo con tartufi is also very good, and the grilled porcini and the roasted peppers are a must. Secont time here. The first was long time ago and it did not make a strong impression on me. And now I know why. It is a meat place the best to eat here big meat which is made on the open fire in the restaurant. Nothing is bad here but still you do not have the feeling that you want to come back. The food is good but has too much strange sauce on it. The service somewhat strange. It is nothing particular just a feeling.

We followed the good reviews but were really disappointed by the quality of the food. The truffle dishes either use low quality truffles or are badly cooked - in any case, they are just not tasty comparing to other restaurants in the area. The soup we ordered had no character and regarding the starter with the region's products - the cold cuts were fine (you can't get these wrong can you?) But the omelette and toast with truffles were a product of lazy, careless cooking. The service was reasonable, but the atmosphere not so much.
Nadav Palmor — Google review
We visited twice during our stay near Norcia. Our B&B recommended. Great food, wine, and service. We too would recommend.
Rob Doyle — Google review
Friendly service and a good selection of wine and dishes. Overall though the food was just ok. Tomato bruschetta was nice, but the lentil soup (a speciality of the region) was under seasoned, and the suckling pig quite dry compared to other restaurants we have visited in Umbria. We haven't tried the pizzas as these are only served at dinner time.

I ordered their package for San Valentine for 35 € (I also thought, that in times of the pandemic we should help winegrowers and bars so the excessive price for 2 glasses and one bottle of sparkling rosé was fine by me.) While I saw no sign of damage on the outside of the package, after I opened it, I saw that one of the glasses was completely shattered. Probably the service they used hit it or kept it under some other heavy weight, no idea. I informed The Cantine (sent them two distinct photographs of the glass still in its packaging). They said they were sorry and that's about it. They have not offered any help or substitution, or at least a voucher for future orders. Nothing. Well, I am just as well sorry as they are, but there will be no future orders from me, that's about for sure. I even will change the band I buy from Umbria.

My love affair with this trattoria started in 2009 and since then I’ve been going at least twice a year (except 2020) taking anybody that comes to visit me. Wow, we were disappointed with our meal and experience at this restaurant. The ratings seem to imply this restaurant would offer a stellar experience but the food was average compared to other establishments in Italy. We arrived and were seated at 7:30pm and waited close to 45 minutes to order. The kicker was when we were not allowed to order dessert because the hostess decided we had stayed too long at 9pm and she needed the table for the next party. Literally, we were not allowed to order desert. This level of rudeness was not something we have experienced in Italy to date. What a disappointment. Try another place!
Lauren Henderson — Google review
Popped by for lunch, and had the piccione (pigeon) and truffle carbonara - both were superb. Didn’t realize it was a Michelin rated restaurant but well deserved.
Conor Norris — Google review
Second, most disappointing meal ever. My wife and I were very excited to go to this supposedly Michelin star awarded restaurant. Unfortunately, our excitement lasted only through the antipasto, which was good, but most of which was not made at the restaurant. Restaurant. Our second course was pasta with black truffles. The pasta was so salty they basically wasted a bunch of black truffles. We could not eat the pasta. We also had the pigeon. This was their last chance and they succeeded in disappointing us even more. The sauce for the pigeon was so salty that it rendered the entire entree inedible. Also, the pigeon was overcooked and dry. Apparently, the chef had not seen The Hundred Foot Journey (a great movie, if you haven't seen it). Pigeon is hard to cook. Oh, our first most disappointing meal was when we were served rotten seafood and not offered any consideration when we brought it to the restaurant's attention.
