Lapland

Lapland is Finland’s northernmost region, a sparsely populated area bordering Sweden, Norway, Russia and the Baltic Sea. It’s known for its vast subarctic wilderness, ski resorts and natural phenomena including the midnight sun and the Northern Lights. Capital Rovaniemi is the gateway to the region. The homeland of the indigenous Sami people, which extends into neighboring countries, centers on the far north.

Siida - Sámi Museum and Nature Center

Mentioned on
Museum
Specialty Museums
Siida is a modern museum located in Finland that offers an extensive insight into the Sami culture and Lapland's natural environment. The museum hosts state-of-the-art displays, including a comprehensive nature exhibition depicting northern Lapland's ecology throughout the year. It also features detailed information on the Sami people, from their traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle to current times. Siida is regarded as one of Finland's most captivating museums and provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about Sami history and heritage.
Built on lands where the earliest settlers in Northern Lapland lived 9000 years ago, Siida is a contemporary and recently refurbished national museum with exhibitions and interactive educational materials on Sámi culture and heritage. An outdoor museum is also open during summer to showcase the architecture and livelihood, as well as boats, sledges and hunting traps. Highly recommended to spend at least half a day here for the great opportunity to understand more about their unique way of life.

It really gives a good idea how living in this part of the world was. Too bad the inside part of the museum is being renovated, so only the outside was accessible.
jos van der Burg — Google review
We had an amazing guide at Siida who told us so many personal stories that really helped everyone relate and learn about the Sami people and their history. The museum has a great open air part as well as some wonderful interactive exhibits indoors as well. Highly recommend!
Erin Lavigne — Google review
A must see in Inari. Indoors was closed but the rest was very illustrative of the Sami life.
Arie Joosse — Google review
Liked the museum, and the people who work there seem happy. Loved that they had a gratis locker for me to store my bag. That’s the best value added service there.
Rashed AlBlewy — Google review
Wauw what an amazing museum. We loved everything. The videos were very special and the picrures on the walls were of such high quality that it felt like being in nature. It was nice that the museum showed both the historical aspect as a contemporary view on Sami live. Definitely a museum you do not want to miss.
Jay van Pooij — Google review
Really interesting, both about the Sami culture and history and the flora and fauna at different times of year. Very stylishly presented information and interactive elements. A lovely gift shop for souvenirs. A must-visit if you come to the Inari area.
Emily Beardall — Google review
Sami museum, in case in the area a thumb up to visit. Teaches about Sami history and the heritage. Currently only outdoor museum is open for customers while they renovate the indoor facilities.
Mikael Ahlfors — Google review
Informative, interactive exposition. Outside you can see various buildings and equipments that were typical to Sami culture.
Kristina Kriugiskiene — Google review
Well-built museum about Saami Culture with beautiful photo expositions. Outside area is a great part of the museum! Things in gift shop are bit overpriced, I just hope the money will at least help to preserve the Saami Culture.. However the overall experience was pretty amazing, we spent here much longer than we expected. English translations available everywhere.
Tereza Ondruš — Google review
Fascinating place to find out amazing facts about Sami’s, their history, clothing, reindeer feeding etc. Very good exhibits esp the videos. Very nice restaurant too!
Irene Krajewska — Google review
Indigenous people always get hosed. We learned a ton about Sami history. An amazing museum.
Rebekah Perry — Google review
We really liked the museum. It was well designed and very informative. Had great information about the geological and biological development of the region. It also had great exhibits about the Sami people and culture. Being really interested in anthropology, I kind of missed a more detailed explanation of the migrations of people into the region. When did the Sami get there, where did they come from, when did the Indo-European and Finno-Ugric people arrive, etc. The biggest disappointment was that we weren't able to see any of the outdoor exhibits because it was too icy. Damn global warming! We spent about 2 hrs looking at and reading about the displays, but I felt like I could have easily spent twice as long. Unfortunately, it started getting pretty cramped with a lot of people, so we wound up leaving earlier than I would have wanted. Though I am glad that so many people came to read about Sami history.
Roman Sannikov — Google review
So much to see, allow enough time. Nice meals. Well worth the visit
Desi Phillips — Google review
One of the best museums I have ever visited! Indoor interactive section, with plenty of pictures, videos, captivating explanatory text, real Sámi items, a lot about nature and animals, and geopolitics, very well designed. Outdoor part is simple, which depicts the Sámi balance with nature, in beautiful settings and very authentic. Visited during very cold snowy days, beautiful and chilly experience.
Linda Srbova — Google review
If you want to learn something about Sami culture, this is the place! I recommend to reserve few hours of your time, as the place is quite big. Unfortunately for me, the museum doesn't offer guided tours. But you can walk on your own through both inside and outside expositions, and read texts on information tables. Or you can use the audio guide on your phone that is available through QR codes.
Jana Krištanová — Google review
The SIIDA museum is worth a visit, despite the quite high entrance fee. The exhibition is high quality, there are touch-sensitive tablets everywhere and everything feels new and robust and isn’t worn out at all. The outdoor exhibition was my personal highlight, very much to see from bear traps to Sami tents to a whole Amphitheatre made of snow and ice. Really worth the entrance fee! The in-house restaurant is excellent and the self-service lunch was delicious! The restaurant is also certified gluten-free. We enjoyed our stay very much!
Florian Nolting — Google review
We thoroughly enjoyed a visit to this museum and wished we could have stayed longer ( we were there about 2.5 hours). The geological information is delivered in an accessible format, being neither too detailed nor lacking clarity. The outside part of the museum added a further dimension and it was good to see the cultural information with authentic artifacts. Sadly we ran out of time in the third gallery but we were very interested to learn about the native animals and birds and all of the exhibits were well presented and informative. This museum is a must if you are ever in the area of Inari.

Museums
A popular attraction in Lapland, the Arktikum science museum is home to a range of exhibits about Finnish Lapland and its culture. The biggest attraction is the Arctic Garden, a glass-domed building with great views of the Northern Lights.
Such a nice museum! You'll have plenty to see. The museum is full of old fashion interactive information, where kids will love to pull ropes, switch lights and so on. It is a lot to read so it might take some hours. You'll be able to learn about climate change and the future of the Arctic, the history of Finland and populations around Lapland, the Finnish wildlife. Also, if you want to experience typical Finnish food, try the lounas at the café. Much better than the food served to tourists in town.
Petitpo — Google review
This is a great museum, presenting everything from history and culture to astronomy, geography and lifestyle in the Arctic Circle. The exhibition design is very professional, allowing visitors of all ages to have a lot of experience. I recommend visiting with children.
Anna — Google review
Great source of information about anything connected to the North and its nature. As a visitor, you will learn how the people used to live in the North, what kind of animals live there, how to explore the nature at the North Pole, and much more. As the permanent exhibitions are huge, reserve few hours for this place, especially if you don't want to just walk through them in half an hour. But that would be really just walking through. Staff working at the place is very nice. As the visitor, you can leave you backpack at the storage room that the staff has keys from.
Jana Krištanová — Google review
Large museum on the history and culture of Lapland and the Arctic. The exhibition is fascinating. There is also something for children to experience. Visitors can borrow a free audio guide at the entrance. That's great! There are also free lockers for luggage and jackets. Food and drinks are available in the adjoining café. You should allow three to four hours to visit the museum. Unfortunately, the entrance fee is comparatively high.
Oskar Vitlif — Google review
Nice museum. Pretty small, a lot of interactive displays. The ticket price is a bit high in my opinion considering the size of the exhibitions. Overall, if you're in Rovaniemi, I recommend taking a look - even just for seeing the building itself, from inside and out.
Shachar Pinkas — Google review
This place is a fantastic pitspot 🚏 on your next trip to Rovaniemi! 🇫🇮 Arktikum is a nice science 🔭 and natural history 🫎 museum 🖼️ with an impressive architecture 🏛️ that includes a stunning glass ceiling. Around this spot is a lake 🌊 from which you might be able to see 👀 the northern lights! I wish I could spend more time here! ⏳

It's a really nice experience here. Awareness to climate change and its effect on Artic flora and fauna. We also learn about Sami people and their cultural foundation. Overall there is a lot to see and explore, but depends on what you are interested in. We had a museum card to enter but you can buy tickets at the counter. Friendly staff and guides with loads of information about the exhibition. I recommend you visit this place.
pooja mansha — Google review
I enjoyed my visit to this museum even though some of the reviews say it's geared towards children. It's perfect if you have a spare days in Rovaniemi and you've already done everything else. The exhibition's are surprisingly good so they must have invested a fair bit into it. A good balance of history and current events.
Daniel Koh — Google review
The place is good To visit for one time. The experience of Northern Light at the middle of the museum is mind blowing. The information about Rovaniemi’s history is one of the interesting things it describes.
Vineet Gupta — Google review
Beautiful exhibitions, lots of information about the arctic. Cafe with delicious food. Northern Lights & ice cave. I especially love the garden which changes with the seasons and is very well kept. When Northern Lights season is on, it's a great place to be 👍.
BB UpNorth — Google review
It’s one of the best museums Ive ever been to! So recommended!!
Nour M. Radwan — Google review
This is the signature museum in Rovaniemi with an interesting architecture and utilises natural lighting to illuminate the museum. It tells the story about Lapland and the Artic Circle, from science to history. The exhibits are also fun and informative. I strongly recommend this to be part of your Lapland itinerary, as it helps you to understand the region as a whole. There's also a cafe, gift shop, a garden and a forestry museum nearby, if you want to fully utilise your time here. Finding the exhibits was initially challenging though, as they were all behind huge doors. Entrance is paid, of course, but there are free toilets here.
Luke Phang — Google review
The Arktikum Science Museum in Rovaniemi is an exceptional destination for those intrigued by the Arctic region and its science. It's particularly captivating for children, as evidenced by an 8-year-old who had a fantastic time exploring its interactive exhibits. The museum offers a wealth of information on Arctic nature, culture, and history, presented in an engaging and educational manner. To truly absorb the rich experiences Arktikum provides, it's advisable to plan a visit lasting at least two to three hours. This duration allows visitors, both young and old, to immerse themselves fully in the wonders of the Arctic world that the museum vividly brings to life. We didn't time to take any photos of the interactive part of the museum though 🤷🏼‍♀️
Marina S — Google review
It’s a must visit place if you are in Rovaniemi to get to know the history of the city as well as saami culture. There are loads of interesting visuals inside regarding reindeers, arctic circle, climate etc. It takes about 3-4 hours to completely go through it all. You can get a culture pass and get access to two more additional museums.
Ady H — Google review
Great exposition, great sceney, finally discovering the Finnish Culture and the Lapland. You have seat all the way if you need to rest or waiting, there is a coffee shop straight on your right hand side when you enter the Museum; Gifts shop available and also for your clothes you have storages available. So no need to pack your clothes for the whole time you will be in the Museum. I recommend taking your time to enjoy every little corner of the museum. Trust me it worth it

A huge and sprawling science centre with loads of fantastic exhibits. I especially loved the old fashioned stuffed animal dioramas. A great place to learn about the history of Lapland and the Sámi peoples. It also has a brilliant interactive climate change exhibition space. All of the captions are in a variety of languages, including English. The English translations are a bit wonky but in a very appealing way. They read almost like poems with a lilting dream-like quality. They possibly revealed an aspect of the Finnish language itself. I found them very enjoyable to read The building's very distinctive and very of it's time, the early '90s. It looks dated at the moment but in a few decades and generations will likely become a treasured example of that era's architectural style. It is completely wheelchair accessible with disabled lavatories.

Urho Kekkonen National Park, located in the arctic fell region, is renowned for its stunning Northern Lights and association with Santa Claus. Visitors can enjoy cross-country skiing by renting gear from the entrance rental shop. The park's Tankavaara entrance offers great starting points for short day hikes that showcase local war history and provide information about surrounding nature. Hikers can also take advantage of picturesque views from Pikku Tankavaara during the Kuukkeli walk.
Spectacular place. It's a must for all hikers, regardles of the time of the year.
Rafal Sliz — Google review
This was my first hiking experience in a long while. The scenery kept changing throughout our 7 day trip and that was the highlight for me. I didn't look at the map a whole lot so every time we took a trail, there was always something new to discover. This was a great place to find quietness and peace, and the people we came across shared that same energy. I would suggest visiting it one month earlier, the weather is likely to be more stable and warm. Though I've heard that there are a lot more people at that time. The wilderness huts were well equipped and they serve a traveller that likes comfort. The mice do enjoy them as well, so always hang your food sources when entering those. I would suggest taking Luirojärvi as a goal for the trip. It's the heart of the park for wanderers. A lot of people recommended visiting Sokosti on a clear weather, it's nearby. There is also possibility for sauna and ice cold swimming. I'll be recommending the park to everyone I know who likes to hike a little longer and enjoy silence. I'll be coming back here myself for sure!

Nice park with different with hiking trails. Lovely a games of colours in autumn (Ruska aika). A small problem with marking the trails, it is worth specifying the lengths of the trails.

Such a beautiful place! Went for cross-country skiing at this national park. It was my first time doing cross-country skiing and I didn’t have any skiing gear, rented full set of equipment from the rental shop at the entrance cost 15€. The snow fall made my entire skiing experience extraordinary!

Auto Race Tracks
The Icekarting Levi car racing track offers an exhilarating and challenging course that is enjoyed by both adults and children. The experience is accentuated with the provision of gear ranging from helmets to boots, ensuring safety for all participants. The course features two races of considerable length, providing ample opportunity for enjoyment. Clear instructions are provided, making it easy to navigate the course with functional karts. The staff members are lively and friendly, adding to the overall positive experience.
Fun. You get two 15min sessions with a break in-between to have a hot drink around the fire & then get back on the track in the opposite direction. Really easy to drive just using the accelerator and not using the break. There's a pedal adjustment to help anyone if their feet can't quite reach the pedals. If you're early, you can relax in the cafe which overlooks the race track so you can watch. They also do tubing here for those who enjoy snow slides.

Great experience, we enjoyed a lot. There are shuttles to the place so it increases the value for money.

It was an amazing experience in Lapland that one not to be missed. We were trained with video tutorials and given special shoes, helmets, suits, gloves and many other accessories. The cart car having 13 H/P engine and can speed up to 60km/h. It having speed and safety monitor and side of tracks are made of 2 feet tall tick snow wall. So the safety is promised. The race was between four of us. The sensors fitted on both sides of the track mark the laps covered and time taken accurately. After 3 or 4 rounds, we got the hang of it. . It was getting dark soon, so first we posed for some photos then move to the race. The first lap was very difficult. But we learned the technique very fast. Drifting through the ice is very tricky and lots of fun. Also a few times we crashed each other and hit on the snow wall. Its a must do activity on your arctic circle trip
Prathesh Jaison — Google review
Great experience and totally worth a visit if in Levi. We booked the two 15min session which were on the same track but the second was reversed. You need to book in advance and there is a free bus from outside Zero Point. They serve some light refreshments in the go kart centre.
Dean Jones — Google review
Awesome experience and excellent service. The course was challenging and exhilarating. The adults and the kids all enjoyed it. There were two races and both of a good length. They provided gear from helmets to boots and everything in between. We hope to be back soon!
Benjamin Haft — Google review
Unfortunately, my experience at Icekarting Levi was not what I expected. Despite booking 1.5 hours of karting, we were only allowed to drive twice for 15 minutes each time, which was not clearly indicated beforehand. This was not only misleading but also disappointing for those who wanted to spend more time on the ice rink. What was even worse was the attitude of the instructors at the ice rink. They were very grumpy and unfriendly, and one of them even started shouting at us over a small mistake we made. This kind of behavior is unprofessional and can ruin the experience for visitors. As a result of this bad experience, I would not want to come back to Icekarting Levi. It is important that businesses are transparent about their services and that staff treat customers in a respectful manner. I recommend that other visitors spend their time and money elsewhere, where they can enjoy a pleasant and safe experience.
Brian — Google review
Great staff, great equipment, we had a great time racing on the ice!
Celien Van Broeck — Google review
Fantastic experience, smooth process when we arrived, great facilities & clothing supplied. Racing on the ice in the karts was amazing. Was encouraged to push as much as you want with power sliding round the corners a great experience. 30mins on track over 2 sessions, but felt longer. Nice warm by the fire with hot juice between sessions. Would recommend to all when visiting Levi

Driving a kart on a slippery track is incredibly fun! I highly recommend paying this place a visit, especially since a free transfer from Levi center is offered. When we came there, we were warmly welcomed, and girls who helped us with the gear were extremely friendly. Overall, I can conclude this experience with a single phrase: "It was AWESOME!". Worth every cent.

The food is of high quality and the atmosphere is warm and family-friendly. Events at Nili Restaurant often feature world-renowned artists performing live music.
We are a family of four, just arrived and wanted to taste traditional food. We didn't have a reservation and the restaurant was full but they found a table for us anyway. The attention was amazing, the explanaitions of the dishes and the guidance. Food was the best of all. A very high quality, taste and presentations. We are very thankful with the employees. Highly reccomend.

A fantastic place to experience Nordic atmosphere and food. Obviously its a fine-dine restaurant. The menu is great and the food is very good looking and incredibly tasty. You can choose between fish (salmon, cod), bear, reindeer, beef etc. We enjoyed the ‘surprize menu from chef’. Reindeer tenderloins were incredible. It is each EUR worth.

Great food and service! The sauteed reindeer and the whitefish were great. Drinks are also super nice. A bit expensive but totally worth the price if you are looking for a tasty typical Finnish meal. I would definitely go back to this restaurant.

Great restaurant in the middle of Rovaniemi. In the pictures you see the Christmas menu for 61€. It was delicious! As the place is often fully booked even during the week, I highly recommend to make a reservation.
Natalie Denk — Google review
Tasty and delicious local food. Checked this place out cuz it was reccommended on other apps and had good reviews on Google. Didn't disappoint - but definitely remember to book in advance because it's always packed and full. The big starter platter let us get a taste of so many things and it was great to share as a group. Would suggest trying that if you wanna get the most out of a meal. All the other meats and mains were prepared wonderfully. Local dishes like the reindeer were one of our favorites. Reindeer pate was interesting to try if you haven't had it before. Desserts were pretty unique using the local berries and tasted alright. Price was medium/high but expected and we'd say it was a worthwhile visit for our meal.

Traditional Lappish food and that is very tasty. They offer half price portion for kids (no kids menu!). Definitely recommend reserving a table which is easy through their website. Prices are on the higher end but worth it if you haven’t eaten at an authentic Lappish restaurant and are in town for a visit.

What can I say? The food was amazing. It was so tasty I can't even describe it. Every dish was mouth watering. I had the surprise menu, a four course menu. One starter, 2 mains and dessert for 62€. First time I tried raindeer and it was delicious. It was worth every Euro. I arrived there around 5.30 pm and it was packed and nothing was available so better make sure you have a reservation when you wanna eat here. I was lucky because I got offered to share a table with a stranger. Loads of people showed up and they were sent away because of all the reservations. One of the best restaurants I have been to! 10/10

The menu doesn't have a lot of items, but that's a good thing because it's hard to decide what's better anyway. I personally recommend the juicy reindeer steak, but the other dishes were outstanding too. The beers and desserts are delicious. It is worth relying on nice and professional waitresses, they will certainly offer a set of dishes tailored to the taste of each guest.

Take my five stars and double it!! The food and the presentation is second to none! The best place to eat in the city! I went with the surprise menu because I wanted to try the reindeer and my son had the bear. Everything was cooked to perfection, the meat melts in your mouth. My dessert was creme brulee with Blueberry ice cream. Oh my God!!!! Words can't describe how delicious it was! Also, we had two glasses of the ice wine. This meal will be remembered as one of the best!!

Beautiful authentic, a little bit overpriced restaurant in the heart of Rovaniemi( 3 cups of soup, one beer and dessert was more than €70 ).Service is outstanding, and the interior design is superb and original; the food could be better ( portion sizes and taste); however, the presentation makes you forget that the food is not perfect.
Olga Dzyurak — Google review
We loved this traditional Lapland cuisine. The flavors complemented each other wonderfully. We had three different Reindeer meals, I enjoyed the sautéed the most, but the steak was also amazing.
George Johnson — Google review
Set anniversary menu that had quite a few dishes. Loved the reindeer pancakes and the soup. Beef was also one of the best-prepared ones. The dessert was a miss for me - regular pudding with granola in a cup sort of deal.

Fast and friendly service 👍🏻 The menu is simple. The recommendation is definitely the reindeer dishes and salmon soup 👍🏻💪🏻 Must reserve in advance, it is usually fully booked esp during the weekends.
Rina Feast (That’s How We Feast) — Google review
The place is cozy but it has too many tables making it difficult to get comfortable. The waitresses were attentive and fast. The food is good, it is of good quality but the portions are ridiculously small, even more so for the price. The bread and butter was free. Salmon was delicious and abundant enough, with a fantastic sauce. The bear soup contained no more than 3 spoons and was priced at €17.5; the reindeer dish came with 3 small fillets (30gr/piece??) and half a sausage, you pay reindeer at the price of Wagyu A5: €40. The 3 dishes in the photo, 1 beer and sparkling water: €102. Terrible.
Pablo Moreno Hernández — Google review
Recommend for Traditional Finnish food and ambience. The reindeer specialty was the highlight but the other mains we ordered (cod and risotto) were very mediocre. In terms of dessert, the crème brûlée was delicious but the others were also mediocre. Portions are also on the smaller side. Servers were very friendly and the restaurant feels like you’re being transported back in time. Highly recommend :)

We didn’t have a reservation, but they squeezed us in for dinner at 4:30 on a Wednesday. We tried to come back on Friday but they were completely full. We ordered the bear kuksa which had very tender bear meat, however it was a bit too salty. The King of the Forest special was very delicious and perfectly cooked. The Reindeer Roundup was very good as well. They even gave some complimentary appetizers. Service was very nice and quick.
Adam Greyson — Google review
We reserved and got table as soon as we arrived, the place is really cute. Food was really tasty but really small portions and high prices, I guess it is normal price for this part of the world.. I couldn’t find the bread in the menu and it was not offered, we ordered salmon soup, reindeer and bear soup (which is reallyyyy small) the wine was awesome! It was a total of 112€ for 2.. I guess getting the surprise menu is a better option but we also didn’t get that offered to us, we realized after.. one time experience!

Great traditional finnish food. Reindeer stew and steak were both very tasty. One can even have bear meat but it needs to be prebooked. Recommended!

Authentic Lappish cuisine in the heart of Rovaniemi. The menu is compact, the food was delicious and quickly on the table. Unfortunately, there are hardly any vegetarian or vegan options. I recommend making a reservation as it was extremely busy when I visited. The price level is high. With a family, you can quickly end up paying well over 100 euros.

Whether staying at the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel or not, you definitely need to visit Rakas Restaurant & Bar for lunch and/or dinner. Service is excellent, with very friendly staff, knowledgeable (especially on wine-pairing) and kind enough to accommodate our needs. It’s a little pricy, but absolutely worth it for the full luxurious winter food experience. PS: try the Moose meat, deliciously prepared with Finnish mushrooms.

Great restaurant in Rovenami, one of the best in terms of great food and atmosphere but decent prices. We much preferred this to Nili and enjoyed it equally as much as Gustav.

We took the 5 course surprise menu. The chef really chose an assortiment of the best dishes in the menu! Delicious artichoke soup, salmon tartar, reindeer porcetta, beef and chocolate cake with ice cream… great dinner in a beautiful restaurant!

Excellent, innovative menu. Dishes are flavorful & plating is beautiful. The restaurant itself is in a beautiful setting with modern art on the walls that gives it an even cooler vibe. Do not skip dessert!

Really enjoyed this restaurant, felt super special yet 'traditional'. Never had reindeer before but it was pretty good. Loved the atmosphere!

Tasty. Friendly. Small portions. Expensive wine. Nice food but nothing that special. Had three meals here as staying at the hotel. Breakfasts ok. Only went three times as near us. Could be better.

Restaurant
Laanilan Kievari, a renowned eatery in Rovaniemi, Finland's captivating Lapland region, is highly regarded for its delectable Scandinavian fare. Constructed primarily with dark timber, this restaurant exudes an authentic ambiance. Among their specialties are the smoked Arctic char and reindeer steak - dishes that have gained immense popularity. Laanilan Kievari is truly a magical destination, particularly during the winter months when its beauty is unrivaled.
I come from a “foodie” part of Atlanta & this was one of the best meals I’ve had in years. The mushroom pastry app was so savory and every morsel was delicious. The elk was the most tender steak I’ve ever eaten…I seriously could have cut it with my fork. The snowball dessert was creative and delicious. The food was spectacular and the atmosphere was cozy and warm. Don’t miss the homemade bread. All so yummy. I walked here from Saariselka in about 30 minutes..gorgeous walk! Thank you Laanilan Kievari!

A charming and cozy restaurant, which is lovely on a cold Lapland evening. Some good wines to choose from, and delicious local cuisine. The home-made bread is great. We enjoyed the cured deer and porcini pot for starters, then shared the lovely Reindeer Shoulder for mains. The reindeer is finished by the open fire in the dining room, after being cooked in the kitchen, which produces a lovely sauce served table side along with root vegetables cooked with a honey glaze. For dessert, we had the snowball, which was equally impressive, with a delicious chocolate panache inside the white chocolate ball, with lemon sobet around the outside. Service was friendly and on point, very family like atmosphere. Highly recommended!

We had a fantastic meal! Such friendly people, delicious food (reindeer shoulder) and the beers and wines are great as well. Two days ago we had a pizza in Saariselkä city center. For the same price!!!! I would definitely recommend to have the 2 km walk and enjoy REAL food. Highly appreciated!

A great restaurant in the middle of Lapland. Great food with the best of Finnish raw products! Fish and cheeses for desert made a perfect meal. And the wine sellection is outstanding!

Great cuisine with quality products and an incredible wine list. The service is impeccable. We liked it so much that we returned the next day! The only negative point is that on the second day there was a long wait, but it seems that it was because they had a problem in the kitchen. It's better to go early anyway. The moose terdenloin and reinder shoulder surprised us, delicious! I definitely recommend trying it.

Before entering the restaurant, a reindeer approached us thinking we had some food. It even wanted to join us inside! Very nice experience at the restaurant. The food was creative and I tried new flavors from the Lappish cuisine. Service and price to quality ratio could improve.

An amazing experience! Highly recommend combining the sauna and dinner. The garlic soup, fish “mosaic”, and reindeer shoulder were all perfect and our host was super friendly and informative. Best part of our Lapland trip, cannot recommend enough.

We were looking for places where to go and have a typical dinner eating local and we could not find anything better. The food was delicious, the atmosphere great and the service even better. The lady and the young guy described each course perfectly and they were always checking on us making sure everything was perfect. We totally recommend this restaurant, looking forward to coming back :)

If you want to taste local delicacies prepared from high quality ingredients such us reindeer, moose, trout and mallard with excellent wines (I’d argue the best selection in town) this is year place to go. Run by a local family. Been coming here at least once a year and it never let’s down ❤️

If you’re in the area this is a must go! As soon as we walked in the door we knew we hot a gem. We were greeted with kindness and welcomed as if we were home. The cozy restaurant has a small table in front of an open fire where we enjoyed very delicious cocktails until our appetizers came out. The food was OUTSTANDING. We had mushroom soup and cured reindeer meat served with tomatoes prepared 3 different ways. Both delicious!! Then our main courses: pan seared mallard and reindeer tenderloin. Both cooked to perfection. The chef came out to greet us and was a joy to speak with and learn more about the food and preparations. Don’t skip dessert and ask about their special hot cocktails which are also delicious. They are only open. Short while longer and then will close until the season picks up. If you are in town…definitely go visit. You will not be disappointed. We loved it so much, we are actually going back tomorrow to enjoy some dishes we missed. The service is outstanding. Cute and cozy atmosphere. Can’t go wrong.

We had a lovely dinner here 😊 Personnel were professional, food very delicious, menu was build around local delicacy and was short enough. Good selection of wines in case needed (I had non-alcoholic option and that was also available). Recommendation from here 😊 (I had Mosaic of North, Reindeer shoulder and snowball - all very tasty, pictures attached)

The owner is incredibly knowledgeable and takes pride in locally and sustainably made cuisine. Excellent quality and variety. Extensive wine list but don’t sleep on the cocktails!

The restaurant Ravintola Pirkon Pirtti offers a mouth-watering range of Scandinavian delicacies in a charming Nordic setting. The friendly staff and well-created Nordic atmosphere are perfect complements to the delicious food and great selection of wines.
Outstanding service, fresh and nicely decorated dishes. Friendly service staff. We had a very nice evening here.

This was our second evening in Saariselkä. After Petronella restaurant on the first evening, we thought to try Pirkon Pirtti. The restaurant was almost fully booked so table reservation is recommended. Service was fast and efficient. Atmosphere is cosy and relaxed in Pirkon Pirtti. We did not take any starters due to earlier heavy lunch. For main course we tried ”Lappish fish on a platter” and reindeer pizza. Both were good but perhaps there was a little bit of too much cheese on my pizza. I finished my meal with Crème brûlée. Portions are quite big and prices reasonable. We liked this place and booked another evening already when settling our bill.

Excellent across the board! Food tastes amazing and is presented well. We’d recommend all the reindeer dishes, especially the reindeer fillet. We also found the portion of the mains to be very generous and had to take some leftovers home.

Absolutely lovely place to have dinner. Atmosphere and ambience were perfect and the staff were all very friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed all our dishes and had a lovely time here (though we entered at 8pm and were trying to finish quickly before the closing time so staff won’t have to wait for us to finish - we would suggest going earlier). For starters, we had the Arctic Bouillabaisse soup (large portion). It came with 2 big chunks of arctic char, and quite a lot of small cod and shrimps. Soup itself was very flavourful and it was a great starter to warm us up after entering from the winter cold. We then had reindeer fillet (poronfile), which was cooked to medium and is absolutely delicious! It had a very flavourful and complementary sauce that accompanied it, making the dish very well balanced and tasty. We also had the Lappish fish on a platter. It allowed us to try the different fishes that Finland has to offer, and was accompanied by very tasty mushroom sauce. Fishes were fresh and well cooked by the chefs. It was quite funny as the restaurant served only 2 out of the 3 fishes initially, but immediately brought the third fish out.

Best food ever! Its already the second time there and I just love it even more! The food is amazing, the personel (staff) are all very good people, Nice, lovable and paying attention to all your needs. Last time I was there when I call to make the reservation, ask if they could found us a Nice table because it was our anniversary (me and my boyfriend) and they did it, a really Nice table Next to the window and the chef also on the main course made us "hearts" on the plates to congratulat us... That made the night ! It was the best and I cant wait to go back there. In terms of price ... Its worth it... every cent ! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

I came to the restaurant because it was recommended by our guide if we wanted to try bear pizza. Quality was very good for it's price. Meat was well handled and overall quality was very good, although, for my taste it was a bit too spicy to fully enjoy the pizza. I recommend to get it with garlic because it brings good aromatics and taste. It is very recommended to try it if you are in Saarislekä

Restaurant
Ravintola Umpitunneli, also known as Umppari, has been a popular spot for over two decades and is situated next to the Tornio River, offering one of Lapland's largest terraces. While it may not have an extensive selection of specialty beers, its food menu is highly praised, with the Umpparin burger being a standout dish. The restaurant is known for its superb customer service and serene ambiance.
Pretty quiet monday evening. Very good food and so nice service. I can recommend Fish&chips to eat. Decent price and excellent taste👍

Amazing food menu, superb customer service and on the best terraces in Tornio. Not a lot of special beers available but if you’re fine just drinking normal beers from the tap then you’ll be fine. I’d definitely suggest trying the Umpparin burger!

The crazy seagulls ruins the whole outdoor deck experience. Food was good but got to watch out for the birds. They will attack and try to get your food. The restaurant service is okey, but the waiter should bring out the drinks as soon as possible, way to late after 15 minutes. Location is great and nice bar. Get rid of the seagulls please!

Sometimes excellent, sometimes disaster. Depends on who the chef is I'm guessing. I took my friend here, excited to eat the Special burger together with her. I had praised it a lot, how juicy and nice texture it has and how tasty the sauce is e.t.c. When we came in and ordered it, it was a completely different burger with a completely different sauce. Not at all the same as I'd eaten so many times before. It was a disaster, and now she refuses to go here to eat. The atmosphere is the same as your general pub, except this one has a nice view.
