Castles
The Diósgyőr Castle is a reconstructed medieval fortress featuring interactive exhibits and an arena for jousts and reenactments. The castle boasts of its exquisite appearance, with professional tour guides dressed in traditional knight costumes providing insightful information about the fortress. Though there may not be a lot to see inside, it is still worth visiting as the castle is well-maintained and offers opportunities for photography. Discounted tickets are available, and children can enter free of charge.
Modern renovations, looks medieval and also modern and stable. The inside rooms are brilliant and from the rooftop all the city is visible. Interactive screens with diverse games inside, including a photography maker machine that sends you a postcard with your personal photo on e-mail on the spot. Worth the ticket!

Quite concrete fake, maybe in the past was nice, now its not renovation, but building of completely new castle like Disneyland. Such a shame…

Beautiful castle with an incredible feel. What made this worth the visit was the professional tour guide who played the part in traditional Knight costume. He delivered a knowledgeable brief passionately and answered questions thoroughly. Great day out! Looking forward to visiting when the jousting and other entertainment is on in the future!

This is one of the best historical place especially in Miskolc. The facilities are really great even for people having disabilities can enter to the castle. At some times, there are theatrical and historical attraction. The information of castle history given in touch screen in various languages. Tourists from all over the world are really recommended to visit this place.

Very nice castle. There are lot of different chambers to visit, especially I recommend this one with spices in which you can feel the smell of different herbs and etc. Staff is very friendly. In chambers you can find descriptions, some simple puzzle games and lot of different interesting things. Definitely you must visit if you're nearby Miskolc.

The catle with its expositions are in very good conditions offering a lot of facts and subjects well organized in rooms which are every of them focusing on some specific part of activity. Nice peace of history. Very professional staff. Highly recommend.

The castle looks splendid and nice, and is kept in a very good way. We got a discount on the tickets and the kids were free. There were not much to see inside the castle but it was still good to kill some time with the kids and take photos. It is still worthy to visit.

If you're in the Miskolc area this is definitely worth a visit. It's one of the nicest castles I've seen in Hungary; this medieval castle was a favourite holiday residence of Hungarian kings and queens. The castle was renovated between April 2012 and 2014 and instead of a historic castle ruin, visitors can now visit an old, remodeled castle. The castle features a special feature of informal cognition; the visitors can experience the atmosphere of the medieval castle freely, trying all of the things. In addition to the interactive content, reenactors dressed in timeless outfits, as well as spaces on the ground floor that showcase everyday life, contribute to the atmosphere. As a quick reference for the origin of the name: Dió means walnut, referring to the abundant walnut trees in the area. Győr is an archaic version of the word gyűrű, meaning "ring". It probably refers to the rounded shape of the first castle erected on the hill. The first castle was probably built in the 12th century, but destroyed during the Mongol invasion. The castle that stands today was most likely erected in the times of King Béla IV, in the 13th century. The castle had its prime during the reign of Louis I (Louis the Great). In 1364 the nearby town Miskolc was annexed to the Diósgyőr estate. Diósgyőr lost some of its importance when the political union between Hungary and Poland ended. In 1596, the Ottomans occupied the area; Diósgyőr remained under Turkish occupation, ruled by the Pasha of Eger until 1687, when this part of the country was freed from Turkish rule. By this time the castle lost all of its military importance.

We visited during a reenactment, and it was a blast. The schedule we found of events was not followed that I could tell, and with the children under four, that can be a challenge. The food was terrific and the events were fun. The area where the held most events were too crowded. Nevertheless we had fun, as we said saw knights and the various displays in the castle. The stairs up to the towers were treacherous...haha, but the view was worth it (carrying kids up the tower was not).

Bükki National Park

National park
Bükki National Park is a vast natural area encompassing mountains, forests, and caves. It boasts over 90 species of nesting birds, making it a haven for birdwatchers. Visitors can take hikes or go mountain biking on the moderate heights and elevations in the park. The pretty mountain village of Lillafured provides good infrastructure for dining and there's a nice lake to enjoy.
We came here one morning to hike before heading back to Budapest and we were very happy that we did. Hike was beautiful. We had the forest all to ourselves. Such a great escape from the lights and buzz of the touristy areas in Budapest.

Beautiful little natural area north west from Eger. Popular with motorcyclists

It's a beautiful park and quite a walk, so I would suggest taking the train up and then leisurely walk your way back to the entrance. Do not rush. Give 3-4 hours to soak in the atmosphere as there's quite a lot to see.

Amazing and wonderful place, you can see a lot and hike well

We wandered away from the main area and followed the water for 2 km down and did a loop , just beautiful here , the bird song is amazing , we couldn't catch the train as we only had visa cards, so if you visit here have the right currency for drinks , or cable car / train

Both from Eger city & Miskolc city (for example) are great to ride, cycling into/across the amazing mountains of Bukk Nat. Park! :) Cycling routes are not everywhere, so if you are not enough confident on the roads, then go with your car until Szilvasvarad (village), where you can start your more relaxing ride without almost any traffic.;) Road bikes are OK to use in Bukk but if you don't want to watch/care much about potholes on the smaller roads, go with mountain bike, or cross bike, gravel bike, enjoy!;)

Great place for hiking and mountain biking. Moderate heights and elevations Lillafüred pretty mountain village with some good infrastructure with many places to dine and nice lake.

Plenty of beautiful places in the nature, however I recommend choosing a different path from the standard ones, because the way to the big lake along with the trout stalls or the Ancient men's cave were quite crowded. In contrast, the Italian Gates were still and peaceful.
Rita Kormos — Google review
I love this place and it is one of the reasons I still live in Miskolc. It's a great place for outdoor activities all year round (hiking, running, cycling, cross-country skiing, also rock climbing). There are peaceful forests and meadows, caves to explore and wonderful vistas from its many peaks. The only reason why I don't give 5 stars is the extent of human intervention. It's a crying shame how they clear hillsides of forests in an area that is supposed to be a protected national park. If that ever changes, it will be paradise on earth.
Viktor Kaposi — Google review
We took a train from the town center(I think every half hour or an hour is scheduled to leave from the centre Szilvásvárad and walked back to our car on a road trip from Eger .It is a charming place and we will definitely be visiting again to reconnect with nature

Lillafüred State Forest Railway Adminisztraciò

Scenic Railroads
For those interested in trains, especially children, the Lillafüred State Forest Railway is an ideal option. The longer the ride, the better! While travelling to Garadna, there are limited activities available such as a small snack area and a few hiking trails; however, overall it's an enjoyable experience.
Going by some of the reviews, I think there is much misunderstanding about this railway & the map pinpoint which is understandable. Maybe this might help someone... check days & times online that it runs. If you are a tourist & new to the area, find Végéllomás Bistro on Google maps (Végéllomás means "end station" or "terminus" in Hungarian) & take tram 1 from Miskolc to the Bistro - tram stop "LAEV" is right outside it. (Download Mobiljegy to get a tram ticket or tap on tram drivers door inside tram to pay cash) The train station & ticket office for the Railway is next door to the Bistro. In the ticket office they speak English & German. It is no problem to get a ticket. The train ride is absolutely brilliant. Sit on the right side of the train if you can. Takes you through the outskirts of Diósgyör & winds its way through the forest, over a large bridge & through a tunnel up to Lillafüred. The train takes 30 minutes to reach Lillafüred. Plenty to do once you get there. See the waterfall, the hanging gardens of the palace then go and row a boat out into the loch. Wonderful scenery. On the way back, Végéllomás Bistro is well worth a stop for an evening meal - it is Michelin recommended & fairly priced with nice outdoor terrace! 😊
Neep Heid — Google review
This train ride is must! We enjoyed it very much and highly recommend it. Especially if you have kids.
NYPTBLUE ONE — Google review
Half of the railway is temporary closed but you must pay the same fee for it. There was no information in town about it even in the information office. The view is really nothing special especially for its price. Mostly covered by trees and garbage.
Grzegorz Sztomber — Google review
We came from far away, they didn’t even let us into the territory 👎

If you or your kids like trains (mine are obsessed), than you cannot go wrong. The longer the better! The trip to Garadna is rather uneventful with only a small snack area and a couple of trail heads, but a fun overall experience.

Lovely routes and well maintained old trains. But the tickets are quite expensive

It's fun for kids, but personally I did not feel anything extraordinary about this route, especially when we compare with any other scenic train routes in Europe.

THIS IS NOT DEPARTURE STATION!!! Unfortunately, we have been deceived by the number of reviews this place had. This is only train's depo. Tram personel sent us all the way to Dorottya utca where the train starts the journey, despite the fact that it also stops on the other side of the road, some 200m away. That has costed us 45mins. Now to the actual service. In my perspective it looks like they don't really want tourists to use the train. Departure station is virtually unfindable on the map. Lady selling tickets only speaks Hungarian. All signs are in Hungarian only. There is no map of the railway, no map of stops. Price is high. I am not surprised that the train was only half-full in high-season. Back to positives. Departure station has toilets. The ride was great. It is impressive how steep of an angle this train can climb. Open wagons really improve the experience. Kids were in full attention. To help you navigate, departure station is named "Láev Dorottya utca Végállomás" in Google Maps. The stop next to this place is called "LÁEV Majláth úti megálló".

Miskolc Zoo is a wildlife sanctuary situated within a park that features both local and exotic animals, including big cats. The compound also boasts of statues honoring famous naturalists. Although the zoo may not be vast, visitors can conveniently stroll around for at least two hours in any season, even winter. At approximately 1 pm each day, feeding time commences with visitors able to follow the small truck's path for an up-close view of the animals being fed by the fences.
Nice place to visit with children! During weekend there is a schedule for feeding publicly different animals, good experience to follow.

Nice clean place enjoyable environment. Easy guide through the map. Wide range of animals kept clean and looked healthy I was happy to see that. There is some new additions since my last visit I will always return. Staff polite and friendly. You can buy animal food at the entrance in the gift shop. 😊

The zoo is involved in various conservation and educational activities and has been a member of several international breeding programs for endangered species. visitors can enjoy guided tours, animal feeding, and other interactive experiences.
Joy NK — Google review
The worst ZOO I have ever seen. Very little animals, lots of them are in bad condition. No paths - just mud. Just one small shop near entrance. Very little of benches, they are all old. But for me the worst thing was lack of good animals healthcare!!! This ZOO doesn't reach heels the Nyriegyhaza ZOO which is one of the best in Europe.
Konrad Dral — Google review
The place was very good for family and kids. Good range of animals and very different from Budapest or Debrecen Zoo as it's more a feel to walk inside forest and animals and seen more near. People at entrance are very kind, specially those at souvenir shop they gave free lockers to keep our luggage it's important as in zoo there is no trolley for rent. Use miskolc 24 hour or 72 hour pass which is always cheap and best
Donald Justin — Google review
Great little Zoo. We have yearly tickets and we visit at least every week. The animals have a lot of space and they are well taken care of. It's never crowded. Very peaceful.
Franziska Link — Google review
Well, it was the first time going to the zoo (I know 😔). I was there for about an hour and some minutes. The walk up? Beautiful and took about 15 minutes from the trolley stop. I don't know how much you guys pay cause I had bought the Miskolc tourist pass/card thingie. I don't know how to compare this zoo as it was my first ever visit. It was okay. I was heart broken by the tigers (honestly, I was an emotional wreak), the bears were cute (of course) but the staff was not really smiley smiley (does it make sense?) but I sort of enjoyed it
Ntombifuthi Nzimande — Google review
Even in the winter season, a lot of animals could be seen. The zoo doesn't seem large but you can easily walk around for at least two hours. Feeding time is around 1pm, and I recommend following the path of the small truck to get a close look of the feeding animals by the fences. The tickets are pretty cheap too.
Gréta Kozák — Google review
Beautiful animals just a step away. The place is not overburdened. You can sit down nearly every corner either to rest or to eat. There are houses to take cover in case of rain. All in all it is cool!

Restaurant
Anyukám Mondta is a surprisingly pleasant eatery, located in an unexpected location. The staff members are exceptionally friendly and the service goes above and beyond the usual standards in Hungary. Although the pizza fell short of expectations, the meat dishes were satisfactory but not outstanding. A noteworthy incident occurred when pork ribs were mistakenly served, yet the restaurant graciously replaced them with beef at no additional cost. The prices were reasonable and overall it was an enjoyable experience.
Superb restaurant included in the Michelin guide. The food is delicious, fairly priced. Very cozy atmosphere, staff is very nice, know english as well for those who can not speak Hungarian. A perfect place for a nice lunch or dinner

A very decent and nice restaurant in a place that you would not expect to find it. The stuff are very nice, and the service is much higher than Hungarian standards for sure. Pizza was not so good, meat was okay but it was not my best dinner ever. However I ordered pork ribs accidentally but restaurant was super nice to replace it with beef without charging us any extra. Prices were okay, we had fun. Go and see for the amazing people who makes this place an amazing one.

A nice restaurant in the small Hungarian town of Encs. It boasts a Michelin star, but the atmosphere is casual and the food offer is wide. You can also order so-called classic Hungarian dishes. We had a good meal, I recommend to try it, but book in advance.

Anyukám Mondta (my mother said) is one of the best Hungarian restaurants in the country side. Very good food at very reasonable prices but the upbeat music does wrong to the atmosphere.
Elroy Thummler — Google review
Really nice restaurant owning a michelin star with a touch of Italian kitchen. The ambience especially makes the stay very comfortable. The food is quite delicious but the desserts really made me agree to own the star. Service could be a bit more caring though. But I'll come back for sure.
Florian Rappersberger — Google review
We found this restaurant by accident, the food is just really good, appetizer was delicious with great meats, the buttered vegetable side dish is like a painting, looks beautiful and tastes very good, pizza and pasta are just great and the traditional Hungarian food is fantastic as well, very reasonable pricing and great coffee, if I. The neighborhood then don’t think twice.
JM vK — Google review
A decent restaurant, no more no less. Everything was kind of average. Service was specifically impatient, I felt if I was asking/ordering one more thing then the waitress will quit for good :) I guess the hype is bigger now than real quality what they serve. I give 4 star because we support countryside restaurants, otherwise it would be just 3….

The restaurant itself is nicely adorned. The wait staff were kind, although there was a slight delay in taking orders despite the relatively small number of guests present. A practical solution to this inconvenience was the use of individual buttons placed on each table to summon the waitresses for order placement. These innovative buttons proved to be quite clever! The food offered at Creppy PalacsintaHáz Étterem & Center Miskolc was delectable and served in generous portions.
Delicious pancake-based food. Vegeterian option available. Wait time 5-8 minutes. English description in menu. English speeking competent and friendly stuff. Robust portions. I highly recommend local beer Borsodi.

The restaurant itself is nicely decorated. Waitresses are kind, but we had to wait a bit long to someone take our order even though it was only a few guests in the restaurant. We had to use the little button placed on each table to call the waitress for taking our order. These little buttons however are a great idea! The food was delicious with big portions! The coffee on the other hand could be better. In the toilet the soap dispenser was empty. Overall it was a nice experience and we will be back when we visit Hungary again.

I knew I will find something of a kind in Miskolc: a hidden nice place with pretty complicated dishes even if we mean the crepes. It is in center, but outside of the usual touristic routes. Any way, it is worth visiting! My compliments to the work the guys do. We easily overate, because everything was too delicious
Alex Litvinka — Google review
The place has a big advantage, it has parking and terrace, on top of crepe based foods. Parking in Miskolc was a pain, we had no coins, the mobile app did not work to take the card, sms only valid for national numbers. The menu has lots of crepes options, savory and sweet. We took a soup, a beef pancake and a pulled pork one. The good was tasty and big big portions, too much to eat for us to be honest. The service was friendly, good English, polite, good times. The prices are high, especially for meat pancakes (4300-5000 huf per such dish). Terrace has no plants, just concrete, gets hot even with umbrellas.

We tried the savory pancakes and they were very lovely. In the picture is the Alfredo and the pancake of the month (beef and carrot). Exceptional! Not surprising it is Michelin recommended! We really enjoyed our meal here. Can be reached easily from the walking street in the centre of Miskolc by taking the tram. The inside of the restaurant has a great atmosphere but, we chose to eat out on the terrace as it was lovely weather that evening. We both had starters - kohlrabi soup & melon salad. For mains, I ordered the pumpkin filled beetroot ravioli w/ blood orange sauce & it was gorgeous. My daughter opted for their vegan special & that evening it was a delicious & fragrant coconut curry with seasonal vegetables of cauliflower & summer squash. We couldn't pass up pudding either on this occasion & both were divine! We had several beers & cocktails as well & along with 3 course each, it was difficult to believe all told the bill was under £70. Excellent value for such a fabulously presented & exceptional dining experience. Service was also very friendly & efficient. There is an English menu if your Hungarian is rusty. 😉 If you plan to visit Lillafüred via the wonderful Forest Railway, the station is next door & a visit here for dinner would be a lovely way to end your day out there.

I had an absolutely delightful experience here. My in-laws are local and this is their favorite restaurant, so they took us for dinner during our visit from the US. I can ser why - the atmosphere was beautiful, warm and inviting, the food was presented and cooked to perfection and the service we received was the best I have had in Hungary. It is most certainly deserving of its Michelin rating. I am already counting down to our next visit so we can come back for round 2!

A Michelin nominated restaurant in such an industrial part of Hungary. Really high quality food, loved everything we ordered, we particularly enjoyed the seasonal vegetarian dish, fresh ingredients with great depth of flavours.
Tip L — Google review
What can I say, a restaurant that overall deserves a Michelin star! Stunning décor, a combination of colours and materials designed ad hoc... But the kitchen with a coterie of young guys (the oldest is 25 years old) ... and the service: Szabi served us, took good care of us, chatted with us, showed us around the restaurant and explained colours and materials (see photos). We started with a house entrée, and then a mixed starter of local cured meats and cheeses, with trout pâté and duck liver pâté. If you come here, you must try the 'kebab sandwich' with wine venison, tejfol, smoked onions, rocket and marinated cabbage. It opened my mind and of course my heart ❤️ And for dessert: a kind of mellow mash, made with the white of the softest egg, drowned in an egg custard flavoured with Madagascar vanilla. Superlative dinner! All drowned by two bottles of Sauska Pinot Noir 2018, and gin and tonic to follow ...

The service is fantastic, speaks fluently in English, knows the menu in every detail and can propose dishes you may like or look for. Food is served in beautiful and aesthetic way, delicious and worth it's cost. Prices are not the lowest but for sure you won't regret paying a bit more for the taste. If I were you I would sit inside because interior is elegant and cool, outside it's not so nice and rather hot, although it's near the main street and tramstop so it's loud.

We had an amazing dinner and beers here. Every dish was delicious, the waiters were attentive and kind, in spite of the fact that the electricity went off two times. Awesome place! You can tap your own drink from the wide selection of local craft beers, while munching on a delicious hamburger. A piece of US in the Hungarian countryside. Highly recommended!

Too good the steak, the beer and the service. We love the experience there and the beers are very good. Each table has a tap with 5 types of beers and it's a perfect way to taste all of them. The steak was nicely cooked and delicious. Would go back to Miskolc just for this

Great location, delicious food, great service, definitely worth a visit!

The real deal here is that there are taps at the side of each table, so you can draft the locally made beer yourself. The beers are fine, too, and the food has traditionally been fairly tasty. If you stay around Miskolc, and have a free evening, it is definitely worth a try. Prices are slightly higher than what is usual in Miskolc.

Very good beers, self service taps on the table. They offer also accommodation in near apartments with their beers in room fridge, accommodation is also nice - really recommend.

After riding the Lillafured train we stopped here for lunch. The view of the lake was fantastic. The quality of the food and service was what you would expect from an establishment such as this…excellent! Strongly recommend eating here!

I’m unhappy to say that the waiter who took our order, was impolite and served us like we were the most dirty homeless people in the world. We were disappointed and very unhappy about our stay. Hopefully the management of the restaurant will take care about the behavior of the staffs in the future.

15 minutes waiting just to make an order. Waiter said - “just a minute I am coming”. Joke! Update: I have to negative feedback to waiter. He is overwhelmed! In the same time there are 2 hostes standing in the middle of a restaurant and do absolutely nothing. However, it seems to me, they have to help when when restaurant is getting crowded . Absolutely disgrace

We visit the restaurant here most of the cases when we return to Hungary. The service today was below expectations, arrogant waiter and offered the table of another, not yet finished family. He loudly mentioned several times that they were about to leave however they were not done yet. Very unprofessional and I felt sorry for the other table company, as they were kind of made to leave. When asked for something to share before the meal came, he asked me which country I live as this is not customary in Hungary. Haha! Unbelievable! The meals were ok, the deer was overly salty. It is obvious that they go for the quantity vs quality. Also some of the waiters should be retrained (less arrogance vs more politeness) My last visit there ever.

Cozy accomodation next to the Lake Hámori in Lillafüred. Our room was spacious and so modern like in a boutique hotel. Quiet too. Really like the electric chimney place. The restaurant where we had late lunch and breakfast was so tasty! The restaurant has very nice views, you see the lake from your table. Food is very fresh and filling! Very sweet place! 💓

Amazing traditional Hungarian food served in traditional dishes and generous size with a very kind service ( at least our waitress was extremely kind ). The place is in a perfect spot if you get the table on the edges it’s an amazing view. I can only recommend! Also allowed to seat with your dog on the balcony.

Walked in for lunch, food was amazing. Staff was helpful and friendly. I can imagine it can get busy during summer, but definitely worth it.

I only stopped with my family at the restaurant - my parents, my daughter and me. We came to this place a few years back and I had a bad experience back then but my father insisted that this is a good place. The place was about half full when we went today, but the waiters ignored us for a few minutes before we asked one of them. Without stopping he told us to go find a table. He wasn't outright rude or busy but he couldn't have possibly cared less. It took some time before the waitress came with menus - she was nice and helpful. After ordering, it took a while to get the first dishes (soup from the daily menu) and it took even longer for the rest to arrive, as if the kitchen is understaffed. The food was mediocre, not even taking the excessive pricing into consideration. Personally I think the menu selection is awful (all 'glitzy', 'fancy' dishes) but that might be just me. The lake, the view and the surroundings are beautiful but this place is a true tourist trap. Lillafüred is a fantastic place to visit but I'd advise avoiding this restaurant.

Fast service, fantastic food. We returned the next day to try some more dishes on the menu. It would be great to have a vegan hot dish or two as well but couldn't fault what we tried and the service was second to none. Thank you!
