Alexandra's Clock On The Hill

Scenic spot
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Alexandra's Clock On The Hill is a noteworthy attraction that offers breathtaking views of the town. It can be reached by walking alongside the Manuherikia River and crossing the 'Shaky Bridge'. The climb to the clock is steep but worth it, as it provides an impressive panorama of Alexandra. The clock itself is fascinating as it still works accurately. Additionally, there is a Cross situated higher up on the hill for those who dare to explore further.
Remember this clock when I was a small child nearly 50 years ago. Not much has changed over time which is awesome. Always my highlight of visiting Alexandra. Autumn colours are an added bonus.
M N Scott — Google review
Accurate. Best seen from a distance unless you're young enough and fit enough to make the steepish climb.
Hugh Wolfensohn — Google review
I’d seen this on our approach to Alexandra and wanted to see it closer. The parking area is only small, a track takes you up to the clock but as it was very windy on the day we didn’t go all the way up. Lovely views over the town
Sue Vallancey — Google review
Nice scenic spot next to the shaky Bridge.
Tennille Postma — Google review
I've been to Alexandra several times and didn't notice that there was a large clock on the hill. Once I saw the clock I wondered if you could walk up there, so checked google maps. I walked from town which went along the Manuherikia River and over the 'Shaky Bridge'. I'm not a fan of heights so wasn't sure if I would be able to climb all the way up to the clock, But I managed it, though my legs were shaking by the time I got there. The walk up was okay, though the last few minutes was very steep. It was worth the effort - what a view of Alexandra from the clock. The clock was also impressive - I was amazed that it was a working clock and the time was correct. There was also a Cross further up the hill behind the clock, but I didn't make it up that far. Maybe next time.
Jo-Anne Walker — Google review
Okay place to visit, if you like you can spend approx. 15mins uphill and walk underside of clock for photos.
Alex — Google review
Views are fantastic of River Clutha and Alexandra once you reach the top. It takes 10-15 mins to walk up.
Sarah Williams — Google review
The track from the road to the clock is easy going. You can also climb up rocks to get an even better view of the town from the top above the clock.
Adam Whitehead — Google review
Can be a tough climb, especially on a hot day but well worth the effort with awsome views.

Great place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the Vinyard in quiet and peaceful surroundings. The units are modern, with great facilities and lots of room. Best bed that I have slept in in a long while. I have no hesitation in recommending the Weaver Estate accommodation.

We stayed here for 5 weeks after lockdown after a difficult time. It was perfect timing, lovely and private, warm on the chilly mornings. Great service too!

Tiny, family-run winery. Daughter is the wine maker. Beautiful tasting room & location. Pinot Noir (2011 in particular) and Pinot Noir Rosé wines are fantastic!

Mitchell's Cottage is a beautiful and well-crafted historic home that can accommodate large families. The property is meticulously maintained and conveniently located just minutes from the main road. This place is stunning- you can imagine the Mitchell family of 10 living in this well crafted cottage. The grounds are well looked after and only minutes away from the main road. If you have a 4wd be sure to go visit the Obelisk further up the road.

This was well worth the stop. Very good example of the similar derelict cottages you see on the main rd but thus one is intact on the inside. Sign the visitors book. Awesome views. Leave the doors closed when you leave and be respectful. This was free!

As we are driving with Google, we found this place along our route and decided to stop. It is an old home that was built entirely of rocks. Even the roof is a rocks. It consist of two small buildings, and one of them. The foundation is entirely on a massive rock. I think that would be pretty difficult to build, but it is a really sturdy place. We met some fun friends from Australia and enjoyed are quick stop. you can walk through both homes , if you’re in the area is worth a stop. There are no bathroom facilities there.
Melinda Jennings — Google review
An excellent example of NZ family history. A sturdy cottage, built by the father of 10 children. Well worth a visit.
lorelle payne — Google review
Just loved it. I was taken back in thought as to how hard it would have been then with 10 children and none of the home appliances we have now. So cold in winter. So windy and so hot in summer. I loved being there. Lovely visit and lovely views.
Barbara Laird — Google review
Well I found it interesting to see just how well built this very old house is. The families story is an epic of survival in an inhospitable environment. Go see it after you check out Alexandra and the vineyards.

Grey Ridge Vineyard is a stunning property that offers incredible views and boasts an impressive range of delicious wines. The hosts, Sue and Paul, are known for their hospitality and expertise in crafting these exceptional wines. Visitors can enjoy wine tasting sessions while admiring the beautiful vista across the vineyard ridge along with the circling Hawkes. Grey Ridge Vineyard is a must-visit if you're passing through the area, as it offers an unforgettable experience with its well-curated selection of fine wines.
The range of Grey Ridge wines is possibly the single most delicious set of wines as a group I’ve ever tasted. We really enjoyed chatting with Paul and Sue while hearing about how they’ve crafted these wines, all with the incredible vista across the vineyard ridge together with the circling Hawkes. A magnificent venue with an incredibly well curated selection. Thanks for a great time!
Mark Apeldoorn — Google review
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Grey Ridge Vineyard. Paul and Sue are warm and friendly hosts, and the vineyard is beautiful. We were staying in the Orchard Studio which, as the name suggests, looks out over an orchard. It was warm, spotlessly clean, and the beds were extremely comfortable. There was a patio where we could sit outside, and we were also invited to use the terrace attached to the main house which has fabulous views over the vines. The wine produced here is also excellent. Sue did a wine tasting with us, and Paul showed us round the vineyard and explained how they grow and harvest the grapes. We would definitely recommend a stay here.
Jill Barlow — Google review
The views alone over this vineyard to the distant hills which are subtly depicted on the winery labels make this well worth a visit. Add in the passion of host Paul in recounting his experiences as owner and the magnificent platter (sufficient for 3 hungry adults) prepared by his wife Sue so we thoroughly enjoyed our visit here. Highly recommend
milton anthony — Google review
Hubby and I called in to Grey Ridge today to sample their wines and indulged in a platter. Sue and Paul are awesome hosts, the whole experience was casual, friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. Thank you and your wines are superb. thoroughly recommended to everyone !

Such a beautiful experience here. We visited for some wine tastings. Gorgeous wines at a very reasonable price. Wonderful hosts (the owners). Such a tranquil spot and platters. Highly recommend their wines ! Yum

We loved our stay with Sue and Paul. They are incredible welcoming people. We slept very well in configurable beds and a spotlessly clean accommodation. If you are looking for a quiet place with delicious wines and a view, this is the place to be.

My husband and I parked our caravan on this stunning property - views are incredible . Sue and Paul are amazing hosts very helpful . Enjoyed wine tasting and helping pick grapes. Their wines are awesome, hence we have purchased a couple of cases of wine to be shipped home. 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷. We recommend if you are passing through this area - stop off and stay here. THANK YOU Jude and Gray Hall MATARANGI BEACH

We had a lovely experience at Grey Ridge Wineries. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by Sue and shown to an outside table with magnificent views. We then enjoyed tasting four lovely pinot noir wines with so much information about each one from Sue. We saw the menu for platters and wished we had had time to enjoy one! Thank you Sue, we had such a lovely time and I'm presently enjoying a rose with tonight's dinner!
Patricia Young — Google review
Wine tasting was absolutely delightful. One of the few places where you can sample amazing pinots whilst having a great chat with the wonderful owners. We left with a case and will be back for more
Elsie Hulst — Google review
This is what wine tastings should look like! The owners really took the time to welcome us and talk about their wines, which we greatly appreciated!
Yana Prokofyeva — Google review
Definitely a worthy drive to! Sue and Paul are super friendly, they also got terrific pinots, especially the reserve! Anthony has definitely did a good job. The white PN & rosé are awesome too!! Also had a lovely walk at their vineyard!!
Krystal Tsang — Google review
Great winery tucked away on the hillside. All wines were amazing: White Pinot, Rose and 2 delicious traditional Pinots. Sue was a welcoming host. Would highly recommend!
Stephanie Hausler — Google review
Lovely piece of landscape. A little Tuscany feel. Sue was a lovely host with a wonderful selection of Pino noir. The white Punot Noir was our favorite. Matt & Becs
Rebecca Southen — Google review
We didn't stay at the hotel, but we stopped by for a spontaneous wine tasting. Sue and Paul were very friendly and welcoming, and their wine was amazing. They specialize in Pinots, so if that's your thing, this is a must-stop. Definitely leave extra room in your suitcase because you'll want to bring home multiple bottles. Plus you can't beat the views!
Alyssa Harmon — Google review
This was our first night stay in New Zealand and we couldn't have picked a better place. Sue and Paul were the friendliest and most accommodating hosts. The room was very clean and comfortable. Our hosts offered us a tour of their vineyard, a wine tasting of their own homemade wines, and dinner, which was fantastic. We also enjoyed a breakfast. Sue and Paul are great conversationalists, and we wish we could have stayed longer. If you have the opportunity, you must stay at Grey Ridge Vineyard. We would also recommend booking with them directly, as they mentioned they offered perks if you do so.
Jordan Beasley — Google review
Where to start? The view over the winery is breathtaking. The wine, we all loved. Thank you Sue for a great wine tasting experience. The food so delicious. Yummy dinner and breakfast 🙂 The cottages are beautifully appointed and very comfortable. A relaxing spot to unwind and enjoy. I has health issue during our stay. Sue and Paul were wonderful and helped with no fuss. They are wonderful hosts who have worked hard to make their dreams come true and we were privileged to enjoy this spot with them. Thank you

Olivers is a well-known and esteemed restaurant in Clyde, situated in a restored heritage building from the late 19th century. The food is of high quality and the atmosphere is atmospheric, making it the perfect place to enjoy a meal out with friends.
Spent the night at Clyde since we did the Otago bike trail. We stayed at Lord Clyde and across the street was Olivers. Really nice place with great food. Definitely get the scallops. They were cooked perfectly!

Coffee is undrinkable, very bitter, and the bread was burnt, the Salmon dish was a huge disappointment, would not recommend this place! Post office is 100% best choice in Clyde,

Beautiful venue with excellent service. The food was great, but our minds weren’t blown. Duck liver pâté was one of the best I’ve had. Good selection of wine. Would come again, but would try some different options. Atmosphere was slightly lacking.

Service was wonderful. Our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu, great rapport with customers. Food very very good. Two entrees so we could have dessert and very happy to doggy box the left over cheese. Bar staff helpful and made a very good Cardrona gin. Very good wine list. Thank you everyone. We'll be back

Awesome outside seating area. Ordered the smokey pulled pork shoulder burger and it was delicious. Great place to stop for lunch after riding the Dunstan Cycle Trail.

I’ve traveled around the world and the chef here made one of the best steak ever I have tasted in my life. Simply amazing experience. You should be setting up a restaurant in Las Vegas and show off your passion with the world.

Beautiful building and garden. It was fully booked so we just tried their house brew, excellent! Will book and eat next time.

Coffee is absolutely terrible, couldn't even finish my cup,, went in again today just for something to eat, (was staying away from the awful coffee) and my Salmon dish was a huge disappointment, I thought I would of at least gotten a whole piece of Salmon, it was like vomit on a plate! Would not recommend going here!

Cannot recommend highly enough. This place is awesome! Huge rooms, nice bathrooms, beautiful gardens, fantastic breakfasts, welcoming hosts. I wouldn't stay anywhere else! See you again soon
Kirk V — Google review
Walked in to Oliver's last eve without a booking. Was offered bar snacks from their menu. Asked if I could have it to take away ( as atmosphere was not to my liking ) and was told yes I could takeaway but they could not guarantee the quality if I did so. I agreed and ordered basic stuff that couldn't be damaged by takeaway. A mini sourdough loaf ( with long-winded butter accompaniment which I wanted to try) and shoestring fries ( with aioli - I think lemon and garlic ). Sounded yum. I waited patiently. After around 20 minutes ( not too long in my opinion) I was presented with a small closed box. I took it gratefully and left. When I got back to my accommodation I realized that I only had bread and fries in my takeaway box. The bread was good. As expected. The fries were underseasoned. And without the flavours I had paid for and expected to compliment these I felt pretty unhappy. The service was fine - although the staff seemed confused about what they can offer - but they were pleasant. But no. I do not recommend this establishment. A real disappointment.
Mistywater Maiden — Google review
We had a great meal here. Good selection of beers and wines, nice atmosphere and an interesting menu. Portion sizes are big - so go hungry!
Niles Beadman — Google review
Overpriced and overrated. We got an antipasto platter for 2. It was $65 with only one piece of cheap Brie cheese on it which had dried out too much for the knife to cut through it. The huge cubes of ham looked comical and made no sense on the plate. Cheap flavourless chorizo (maybe). A huge blob of bland hummus. Pate wasn’t bad with the relish, but all and all totally annoyed at myself that I didn’t say something.

This excellent restaurant is located on the main street of Clyde. The historically themed setting has been beautifully restored and has both indoor and outdoor areas. The food, presentation and service was excellent. High quality all round. Definitely recommend to all fans of fine dining.
Haydn Murdoch — Google review
This is a restaurant located in an old Victorian building, therefore it comes with all the old school charm. The ambience and layout is classy but not too over the top. Good - We ordered tha lamb rump and pork belly for dinner. The meals were promptly prepared and served. The pork belly was nicely cooked with very crunchy skin. The lamb rump portions were generous but the texture of the meat in the mouth was different from most lamb we have had. Service - the service was nice and efficient, starting from the nice young man at the bar to the wait staff.
peter oht — Google review
Crippling understaffing means attention to detail is lacking. Smeared glasses, streaky cutlery, napkins missing, bins overflowing in the toilets and Christmas decorations still up. Staff are clearly trying their best but the single waitress working in the restaurant seemed overwhelmed and frequently forgot us. We had been in the restaurant for an hour before our first course arrived though the place was far from full. Food was tasty but our experience didn’t justify the high prices and I’m not sure we’d go back.

The Stoaker Room is a fantastic place to enjoy local food that has been cooked in wine barrels. The menu includes items like fish, meat and seafood that have been steamed and smoked inside the barrels, resulting in a unique and delicious experience.
Love this very unique place. Have been here a few times when traveling through the South Island and have always had wonderful food. Service was good ....especially the young man who seated us and who also enthusiastically showed us the barrels that their meat is roasted in. Great wine; delicious, generous meals, lovely dessert.....good all round!!!

We had dinner here for the second time as our first experience was sooooo good. We came for our honeymoon in Sept 2020. I think they have gotten even better if that’s possible. We ordered the eye fillet, lamb rack and sides with a delicious Wild Earth wine. The staff deserve a shout out too, so friendly. Absolutely devine! We WILL be back.

Great service and even better food! The staff were super lovely and more than happy to show us the smokers and set ups. The food is to die for! The Stoaker dog was ok but the ribs and the pork belly sandwich were melt in your mouth delicious well worth a visit! The desserts were also delicious if you can find the room for them

Was here on the 29th May21. I am quite happy to rate this place with 5 stars. It was a mere 6°c in Cromwell this evening. The Stoaker room was warm with good ambient lighting. The lady and gentlemen serving us were courteous happy and obliging. The food: I myself had the lamb rack and roast potatoes. Those with me had the platter. The meats were cooked superbly and the flavors of the food were just beautiful. Very well done on the venison also which was part of the platter. The plates/platter the food was served on was fantastic and added to the enjoyment and visual taste of being here. Very impressed and I would have no hesitation in recommending this establishment or coming back here. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - well done, as I dont give 5 stars lightly.

A very enjoyable experience dining without plates. All your meals came served on wooden planks which was great. Friendly stuff and great service why you enjoy your meal inside a large open tent structure with a shingle base (floor). Highly recommended.

Wow. Great staff, great food, iconic South Island style. We had a few today so got the share platter and wine tasting flight. Wonderful. Worth the drive

Absolutely delicious! Everything on our tasting board was exceptional. Obviously this place is known for its smoked meats but the sides were just as good! Potatoes were actually roasted and crisp, the couscous salad another surprising winner (I’m normally not a fan). Also when the food came out we were both unsure how we were going to eat it all, but we did!

Lovely, lovely, lovely oh and did I say lovely. A wonderful birthday lunch, great food and great service with a spectacular view, as other reviews say it can be busy so I recommend to book - a must stop if on a tour of the vineyards (or for that matter any reason).

Lovely food and atmosphere but the service was lacking. After taking our initial lunch order we were ignored. Would have been nice to have been offered more drinks and dessert. Ended up going elsewhere to enjoy regional wines. Agree with another reviewer that Mt Difficulty was a much better experience.

We were here in October 2023. I think about my visit a lot because it's an enduring memory of a moment where life doesn't get much better than this. A second time here, and it didn’t disappoint. The menu was little bit different, but every dish was of top-quality and flavour paired beautifully with their wines. Service was great and attentive. Bannockburn Hotel is a fine dining restaurant and bar in Cromwell, Central Otago with stunning views of vineyards. The menu features locally sourced tapas and the wine list boasts over 200 wines. This is an amazing place to enjoy a meal or take in some beautiful scenery.
Always love this place. Amazing food and wonderful setting - I wish the Bannockburn Hotel was closer to home. We came in for some late lunch snacks after a wine tasting on Felton Road and ordered the fish tacos and the halloumi special. Both were so delicious and we wish we could have stayed to have more food. I had a couple of half glasses of rose and it is such a great idea that they let you do this. Also having a Emerson’s Bookbinder session ale on the menu was great for my husband who was driving. Restaurants need to offer more quality low alcohol craft beers.

Went here the other day to celebrate my birthday and had an amazing experience. The service was amazing all so friendly and attentive. Gave me a special glass of birthday bubbles, also recommended wine and food options for us. Everything we ate and drank was amazing. Oh what joy! This marvelous establishment was just over the road from our Airbnb accomm, so we visited three times in two days. The tapas-style food is phenomenal and the wine list is vast. Across the 11 dishes we tried, my favourite was goat cheese croquettes with honey and balsamic. Bliss!! What's more, Anna and her front of house team are witty, friendly and quick on their feet. If I could give six stars, I would.
Jo Joiner — Google review
Lunch was amazing catering for everyone’s tastes. The variety and flavours were awesome and the service was impeccable. A fantastic wine list too! Highly recommend a visit to this amazing hotel.

There is something about tapas style food that really excites me, and the quality and presentation of each dish was fantastic. I was really glad to have company at the table so that I could taste (and devour) at least the majority of the menu without too much guilt, and left the restaurant feeling very satisfied followed by an overwhelming urge to take a nap. Each dish was packed full of flavour, unique, and a joy to consume. All topped by excellent service with a smile, I'll definitely be coming back here for my next special occasion. Hopefully in the spring or summer time so that I can soak up the sunshine (and a beer) in the lovely garden. Many thanks and see you again soon! Jack

We had an excellent server who had great knowledge of the food and wine, and even talked us through the different influences of the micro climates on the wines she helped us choose. The dishes were delicious and perfect for sharing, and she helped us order the perfect amount. There was a crossover with the Cardrona Distillery on the Sunday we visited which also featured unique cocktail pairings with lunch. A lovely afternoon trip. Pictured: cocktail, baked camembert, fish tacos, lamb ribs desserts. Not pictured (too good to pause): chimichurri steak, brussel sprouts, the wine....

If you’re reading this - decision made, you have to come here. Especially if you’re a wine and food lover. This was our favorite meal of our two week road trip - Julia also had a large part here with her beyond exceptional service - backed by a flawless crew. Truly, so welcoming and friendly. They do half glasses of wine here so you can pair dishes with the local wine as you work your way through the menu. Absolutely fantastic!

Great wine list and great food. Also the price is very reasonable compare to other restaurants in the area. You can order half a glass of wine to try more varieties too! Great for wine lovers 🍷 Staff was helpful and friendly, service was great. PS really enjoyed the Felton Rd Pinot Noir😄

Chris and Jules at Bannockburn Hotel offer an exceptional dining experience. The view is beautiful and looks down Bannockburn valley. The lamb is outstanding, and the wine menu is extensive and delicious. We were lucky to taste the last bottle of the Mon Cheval 2010 LeChar Pinot Noir which was exceptional. Their hospitality is warm and welcoming, making it a must-visit in Bannockburn.

Awesome! Biked from Cromwell a do this is a great spot for a refreshment break. Staff are lovely. Good selection of beers, wine, and cider. We only had snacks, warm Olives and some smashed fried potato but these were delicious. Highly recommended!

The positives are the friendly service and atmosphere. The food was nice however value for money is not that great, it does seem quite spendy for small share plates (3 meatballs to share with 2 people which means we wanted to have 2 each and of course were charged quite a bit extra for another. Although the menu has local produce on it (we actually specifically wanted to try the chorizo and lamb), we felt the formulation of the menu on offer didn't celebrate local produce. Sharing plates are great, we would normally do this however we did feel the portions were on the small side and we were left with a 'heavy' feeling. It would be good to have some more fresh things on the menu too.

What a great quiet evening! We had recently dined in several restaurants where the music was too loud, so the guests had to increase their volume to be heard... This was so peaceful and enjoyable. We loved being able to get 1/2 glasses to try a number of different wines. The small plates/tapas were quite generous and delicious. The duck liver parfait, and beef bavette were our favorites. Service was very friendly, not rushed, and our server seemed truly interested in providing us a pleasant evening.

The rooms were lovely. The bed was very comfortable. The spa pool after a decent cycle was wonderful. The dinner was delicious and the continental breakfast was top notch 👌! Colleen and her staff were so lovely. I'd definitely stay there again.

Lovely property for our stay on the first night of our Otago Rail Trail tour. Room was a little on the small side - beds very comfortable. Spa was a welcome treat after a day on the bike. Dinner was superb and Colleen a gracious host.

We stayed here on the rail trail. It's about a 10min ride from the trail but well worth it. Beautifully presented old building. Nicely appointed rooms and a very good restaurant serving decent portions to fill you up after a ride. Staff were great!

We stayed in a beautiful room as part of cycling the Central Otago rail trail. Such a delight to arrive and be welcomed. Our beautifully comfortable and decorated room with ensuite opened out to the garden with chairs to relax outside. We then bought a drink from the bar and headed to the delightful private spa for a relaxing soak. Nothing was too much trouble - even the laundry available free of charge. Dinner was absolutely beautiful and the service excellent. Colleen was so engaging and knowledgeable not only about the area and history but about her wine list and food. The breakfast was generous and set us up for another ride that day. Pitches store has been beautifully restored while maintaining its history. Thoroughly recommended in every way. Sue Neely

We had dinner here whilst doing the rail trail. Hands down the best meal you will get on the rail trail and would have to be one of the best restaurants in the country. They picked us up from Omakau and dropped us off all at no charge, and we got a bit of the history of Ophir as well. A great experience all round. Most of the options for eating on the trail are ok, but this is your only option for a real dining experience so my advice is do not miss it, this one is a must.

Situated in the beautiful and interesting little town of Ophir is Pitches Store. It has a friendly team who are good for a chat and great hospitality. The meals we had here were above excellent, faultless. Nice warm and cosy environment to relax after a long day on the bike. The local pool just 100m down the road was an added bonus on such a hot day. The rooms are well appointed and the beds super comfy. Top spot.

Fantastic experience. We stopped here for dinner as part of the Otago Rail Trail. David picked us up from our accommodation in Omakau and brought us to dinner, explaining the history of the buildings as we went. Colleen looked after us during dinner, which was incredible. We had the prawn gnocchi and duck with quinoa for dinner. Gnocchi were perfect in a lovely smokey tomato sauce. Duck was cooked to perfection. For dessert we had the grilled fruits which is probably the best dessert I’ve ever eaten. Really spectacular!

What an awesome place. The rooms and very modern, luxurious and well appointed. The cafe side of Pitches has brilliant food and drink. I mean, if you are looking for somewhere special to go with someone, or you have a special event coming up this place is well worth a look. The staff are really friendly and your hosts are warm and inviting. What i love about this place is the building. From the outside you would think just another historic building, but the facade hides a beautifully renovated interior that is modern and considered. It has not lost the character of the original building interior. Very clever use of the stone walls throughout paired with a more modern finish. Be sure to check the floor in front of the main bar area. 5+ stars from me. Keep up the good work team.

Excellent food, we had the pork belly and the pulled pork from lunch menu, and a side of chips (that we didn't finish) Needs a bit of gardening out the front where we sat :) Nice that it's dogo friendly!
