Budapest

Budapest is an enchanting city with a special and unique flair. It has been the cultural and political center of Hungary for centuries, and features cafes, restaurants, pubs, and exciting nightlife. The city's architecture alone is worth a trip: Grand neo-Gothic buildings share the skyline with eye-catching art nouveau structures. The Budapest Parliament, and the city's famous hot springs are just a couple of reasons to visit.

Buda Castle is a large, imposing castle complex located in Buda, Hungary. The palace and grounds once belonged to Hungarian kings and queens, and are now home to the Budapest History Museum and the Hungarian National Gallery. Both museums are well worth visiting for their vast collections of art and history. In addition, the district of Castle Hill contains several important historic attractions, as well as a lively baroque quarter known for its restaurants.
Absolutely amazing experience. Something very unique in Europe. You must visit during day and night to appreciate the beauty and views. Very well renovated and maintained castle. Had the opportunity to visiting during Xmas. Beautifully lighted Budapest. Kudos to whoever in charge!

I was a little worried about the weather as it rained the night before but the sun stood strong and we were graced with a beautiful view of the city. Entrance to the museum was free due to the public holiday and going up to the top of the tower was not a long wait either once we got to the top we were definitely not disappointed. You do have to be prepared to leave any large bags and coats behind in a free cloakroom. There was about 2/3 minute queue for this. They do allow you to take your phone up through the museum. It may have been because of the public holiday that we were also graced with seeing a short parade outside the main entrance - which was fun and then they stopped for a photo shoot! There are two lifts that will take you up from the bottom to the top which is great for those who are hard of walking or with young families. There was hardly any queue for this. That also steps that can take you up. There are some construction work going on, but this does not take away from any of experience. Definitely worth coming out to see this. We did not buy any food/drinks- so cannot comment on this

Must visit place! Every inches of this city is really beautiful and even more to see them from up top! And the best part is, there is escalator and elevator for those who doesn't want to and/or can't climb the stairs. The way they make things convenient for tourist to go up there easier is very generous! Definitely one of the free place you can go to in Budapest!

Its a very big castle and will take a long time to see complete surroundings. Entrance to the nearby park is free , for going inside you need a ticket. Monday there is no entry inside castle, other days it will open at morning 10 o clock. Night view of the castle is awesome with lights. And morning sunrise also beautiful from here

A very impressive building, or collection of buildings on a hill with quite the spectacular view! Changing of the guards is always a good show, I didn’t use the fenicular, but if you don’t want to walk up that’s a good option for you. Museum was interesting, very much a maze of corridors, stairs and tunnels but all good. You can walk the grounds for free but need to pay a small amount for the museum, no bags allowed in the museum but lockers are provided for free.

By night the castle looks great, but when you get there by day the situation changes. The palace looks like no one is taking care of it - the walls on some parts have the painting fallen. We only went in the yard of castle, in front of it. The entering gate was very beautiful, with sculptures on it and a very nice fence. Inside the castle is an art museum. The place is full of tourists.

Nice place to get a bird's eye view of Budapest city. A fun way to get up to the castle is by the trolley car but it's bit costly. Cheaper way is to take the regular castle bus. Great for architecture lovers, offers glimpses of the history of Budapest in the national gallery inside. You can go up to the top some..to get some spectacular views of the river and the city.

Magical and majestic! You can easily explore this phenomenal castle all day. Still, it won't be enough - you'll want to come back the next day. Great place for a walk, for photos, for rest. Unique atmosphere, so beautiful and magnetic. Incredible panoramic views of the Danube and Pest!

Lovely castle and a most see tourist attraction. Offering a great panoramic view of Budapest from multiple viewing points. Explore the premises and enjoy the architecture, sculptures and lively garden. You can visit the castle grounds throughout the week at all times, without a ticket. The national gallery and the historic museum have their opening hours and you need to purchase individual ticket for each.

Great structure on the top of mountain, beside the river Danube. Sprawling across a large area. The views are breathtaking. You can either take a fernacular or walk. The walking is not too tiring and you get to see a few viewpoints as well. I have not entered the museum and hence cannot comment. But the place was empty early in the morning, like 8:30 AM. Also the bus 16 is the best option to visit the castle from the Pest part of the city. This bus directly links to Tram 2. Overall, great experience.
Sumanta Chakraborty — Google review
Awesome view of the Pest side from above! Some restaurants to eat and beautiful architecture! You can get up by elevator and would definitely recommend seeing little stalls beneath the castle as they have interesting souvenirs - there is also a big terrace with the view of Pest nearby. Not so crowded despite the weekend

Awesome palace with many things to see for free.and great view towards Danube River. No worse than the view from the freedom citadel. Hiking takes around 10 minutes, I don't think the cabin escalator is that worth it, but if you want to try it - know there will be a line for it! I mostly liked.the view, but there are also galleries and exhibitions, among the thousands of people 😂

One of the most iconic buildings of Budapest, the castle is rich with history and culture. It's currently being used as a museum and art gallery. One of my biggest regrets of the trip is not being able to go inside due to time constraints. Will definitely return.

One of my favourite places in Budapest. Just been there to see the cherry blossoms. Absolutely breath taking. Seen The Mátyás church there very beautiful 😍. It's a very good place on the hill and very nicely maintained. You can go in the castle district by bus which is easily accessible. Don't forget to buy the tickets for public transport 😉!

Honestly no words to describe this beautiful site. This is worth a visit to anyone, whether during the day or the night, it is a spectacular sight to behold. All I can say is, check it out for yourselves. The views will absolutely rock your world and if you're like me and love taking pictures, then prepare to take over a dozen on the awesome panoramic views.

Visiting the Royal Castle of Budapest was a delightful experience that I highly recommend. The castle itself is stunning and offers a captivating glimpse into the city's rich history. You can easily spend a couple of hours exploring its grand halls and picturesque surroundings. One aspect that I appreciated was the availability of a student discount, which made the visit even more accessible for those on a budget. It's always great to see attractions that cater to students and offer discounted admission fees. Overall, the Royal Castle of Budapest is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the city's cultural heritage. Its beauty, historical significance, and the added benefit of a student discount make it an even more enticing option for visitors.

We visited the museum that is hosted inside the building and it was nice. We were just a bit disappointed because there was only one reconditioned room which was indeed exquisite and with many architectural details. The audio guide concentrated on this room and it was quite surprising to find out that there was nothing left from the original old room, everything was a copy. We recommend at least visiting the yard of the building since this is free and worth it. Otherwise, the price was a bit high for what we saw compared to other museums in Europe.

I visited the Castle walking with my friends from Marriott hotel on the other side of the river. The green dome on top of the building is obvious from most of the areas in Budapest. I enjoyed watching every details during my walk. There are a lot of locations to take nice memorable pictures. Make sure you visit the Fountain of King Matthias. This historical building has a lot of art works that will make it such an experience. The building design is amazing. The location of the Buda castle in top of a hill.
Jamal AlMahamid — Google review
Beautiful castle and great view over the city. The walk up the hill was ten minutes, so that is recommended instead of taking the lift. If you walk, you can stand on a bridge and see the lifts go up and down also.

The Budapest Castle District, a jewel nestled atop Castle Hill, offers a mesmerizing blend of history and architectural grandeur. As you wander through its cobbled streets, the diverse array of architectural styles, from medieval to baroque, tells a story of the city's rich past. At the heart of the district, the magnificent Matthias Church stands as a testament to Gothic architecture, its intricate spires and colorful roof tiles creating a captivating skyline. The interior of the church is equally impressive, adorned with stunning frescoes and stained glass that transport visitors to a bygone era. Just a stone's throw away, the Fisherman's Bastion offers breathtaking views of the Danube and the Pest side of the city, its fairytale-like turrets and arches evoking a sense of whimsy and wonder. Adjacent to these historic marvels is the Hungarian National Gallery, housed in the grand Buda Castle. This gallery is a treasure trove of Hungarian art, showcasing a vast collection that spans from medieval times to contemporary works. The seamless blend of history and art within the gallery's walls provides an insightful glimpse into the cultural heritage of Hungary. As you stroll through the Castle District, the charming boutiques and quaint cafes add to the area's allure, inviting visitors to relax and soak in the atmosphere. Overall, the Budapest Castle District is not just a historical site but an enchanting experience that leaves a lasting impression with its stunning architecture, rich history, and vibrant cultural scene.
Nicholas J — Google review
It's a must see of course but the time we were there it had a lot of scaffolding and it was not much to see but still not regretting it. There is one thing we were quite annoyed by that every single additional thing you have to pay for-to visit the Matthias Church or just to walk up a few steps and have a bit more panoramic view as well as the tower before the royal castle had tickets to go up etc and that was not very pleasant as we already paid around €30 to get on the mini buses that drive around as it is nearly 5 km2 (1.8 sq mi). St Matthias church is something to remember though even only for its exterior. It's outstanding.

Perched atop a hill overlooking the Danube River, Buda Castle in Budapest captivates tourists with its majestic presence and rich history. The castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases a blend of architectural styles, from Gothic to Baroque, reflecting centuries of Hungarian heritage. Visitors can wander through its grand courtyards, explore museums housing treasures of Hungarian art and history, and enjoy panoramic views of the city below. The castle district also offers charming cobblestone streets lined with cafes, shops, and historic buildings, inviting travelers to immerse themselves in the enchanting ambiance of Budapest's past and present.

A great view of the city and the Danube River. Overall, there's a museum in the building which has a ticket if you want to enter. It is about a 10 minute climb from the bottom but there is the option of the castle bus or the funicular (which generally has a long line)

Royal Castle on the hill with amazing view for all city. The palatial interior of the Hungarian National Gallery and exhibitions ranging from Gothic altars to sculptures. Around you have presidential palace, gardens and many places for walk.
Monika Karlińska — Google review
Great historical building, a must visit! The view from the castle is also beautiful. The museum's permanent exhibition is worth visiting if you like 19th century, impressionism and modern art. You approximately spent 1.5 hours looking at all the works. At the top floor, you can excess the dome and have a view around the castle. However, you cannot go outside, so it is not a panoramic view.

The Central Market Hall in Budapest is a large, ornate market hall that is full of stalls selling food and souvenirs. It's a great place to explore and buy local products, and there's always lots of activity going on here. The walkthrough tour is very informative, giving you a good look at the building's history as well as insights into the food stalls.
What a great market ! A mixture of true Hungarian foods such as salami’s , sausages and fruit & veg stalls . Heaps of stores selling the best of Hungarian Paprika. Up stairs is more tourist gifts etc and traditional Hungarian food stalls . A not to miss when in Budapest!

A beautiful and large market, intended for visiting tourists. The place is clean, tidy. On the first floor there are lots of stalls selling meat / sausage and stalls selling mainly paprika souvenirs. On the second floor lots of amazing and unique souvenirs as well as fast and delicious food stalls. The place is worth a visit. experience.

This interesting market is located at one end of Elizabeth Bridge. The building is fairly ornate, especially the roof. It is built on two levels - the ground floor features fresh food in all its guises and the second floor features clothes, leather goods and lots more! On the second floor there is also a fast food court featuring authentic street food - well recommended for a bite to eat. You'll find souvenirs here will be much cheaper than the shops. Definitely worth a visit.

A great shopping area with much of joy and tasty bakery products. I enjoyed their special Hungarian cake and cookies. I loved the place, it’s just by the Danube river where you can take the cruise to explore the city and see the popular landmarks such as the citadel and the bridges.

Impressive building with an amazing range of local products, souvenirs and foods to try. Great to walk around, shop and eat typical things like Langos! I bought Hungarian sausage and Paprika! Bear in mind some stalls in the centre sell the exact same products than other stalls in the back / corners for a higher price.

The market hall has 3 levels and is really huge. Everyone will find something for themselves here, we have delicious Hungarian dishes, many different souvenirs, spices, Hungarian sausages, sweets and clothes. Definitely everyone who is in Budapest should visit this wonderful place!

This is a must when traveling to Budapest. Stop by the huge green bridge next door going over the Danube!!!!! We loved it here and the locals that was very kind...... Safe travels..............100% a must stop for any culture.

Interesting place, many shops lot of variety as for example: Grocery, Butche shops, local food bistro, souvenirs. Nice architectural. I do recommend visiting. Keep in mind that although the Central Market is opening early in the morning, starting 6 AM, only few shops are available that time. Most of them are opening later than 9.
Robert Voicu — Google review
Large market in Central Budapest selling food, linen and souvenirs. There are some eateries on the top floor but the number is limited. The market has wide aisles and is very clean. There is that wonderful smell of smoked meat. The other floors are accessible by escalator but you need to search for them.
Andrew Long — Google review
My husband and I are big foodies - so naturally, we loved it!!! Most of the people working there know English so they can explain the differences between products and help you make the right choice. Also, if you're getting tired of bringing back the souvenirs in the form of magnets, this is where you'll get everything done! A bag of sweet, smoked paprika, goulash paste, salami... you can truly bring a taste of Hungary back home to share the experience with friends and family.

Worth a visit if you need souvenirs or wanna check out for local market products. Lots of butchers, vegetable stands but most of all souvenirs, so that I am not sure how much it ist still been loved my local Hungarians. But they have a cute restaurant where you can try local dishes, listen to some live music and relax before or after discovering Budapest by feet. The building is nice, but “nicest market hall Europe”- nope ;-)

It is a great place to buy a lot of daily needs. Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers and Meat are all available. A wide variety of products are available. Fresh fish is also available at the basement of the market. It is a popular destination for the tourists and there are several different varieties of souvenirs available. Best time to visit is on Fridays and Saturdays.

Great place to visit, especially for souvenirs, a good place to taste the traditional Hungarian sausage which is delicious! The market is huge, it resembles a train station - you can buy everything from fruit and vegetables to dairy and traditional meat products, spices, handwork and many souvenirs. You can buy sachets with Hungaria's traditional spice - paprika (both hot and mild) and matching wooden spoons, traditional folk costumes or wooden doll cases. It is a must if you visit Budapest!
Maria Mona Nămoloiu — Google review
Excellent building with a great amount of space. First floor is excellent for getting your day to day items, and the second floor has a ton of food items, gifts, household goods, and some clothing/purses/etc. The top floor, during peak times, can get VERY claustrophobic as the isles aren’t very wide and they’re lined on both sides with stalls and shops. The place seems very clean, but there’s no heat, so come prepared.
Elizabeth Menefee — Google review
Amazing building inside and out, more sausages than you can believe and a statue of a man holding an egg...whats not to love. The place to get your souvenirs and fridge magnets. Pretty busy on our visit but a nice place to while away an hour.
David Smith — Google review
Definitely worth a visit or two while in Budapest. The downstairs is primarily groceries, and it is a good place to buy some goodies to take home, like paprika! The upstairs is half food court and half vendors selling local goods. I bought a few souvenirs here. The food hall has great Hungarian options.

The Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial commemorates the 3,500 people who were brutally murdered by Arrow Cross Party members during WWII. The bronze shoes that are scattered about the riverbank just a short distance away from the Hungarian Parliament Building make for a moving sight.
A very historical surreal experience. And it was lovely to walk down the whole Danube promenade where there are plenty of other statues too! There are not scripts to tell you the story behind the shoes if you don’t already know. So googling the history is advised
Emma Hamilton — Google review
Nice location. Interesting story behind the shoes. Detailed metal work when looking at the shoes. This is a nice place to visit if you're local or a tourist. The views along the river bank are great and there is some amazing architecture! Worth a visit if you are ever in Budapest. Located right next to the parliament building.
Abel Everest — Google review
To get there you need to walk right on the edge of the river. We were there after a few days with heavy rain, which made it muddy 🤷🏻‍♀️ as there is no real pavement. Hope that in time they will build the beautiful promenade. The memorial itself was heavily decorated with candles, flowers and traditional jewish materials. It is a beautiful memorial, sad, melancholic. Would benefit from some lighting at night.

Lovely monument for a terrible past. The views are amazing and highlights how far we have come. Could do with some readable information if you aren't on a tour.

It could get very touching if you know the story behind this. Looking at the monuments could bring you back to the devastating moment. Along the street and river there were many nice architectural buildings, not to mention the parliament that took us in awe.

Heartbreaking- you can feel the terror and imagine the brutality. It is unimaginable how cruel and barbaric the Nazis and the eager evil Hungarian Iron Cross were, but this exhibit reminds us. Had my grandfather not left Budapest in 1921, our family would have surely been murdered as well.

It is a monument of a jewish victims in WWII. They ordered them to put off their shoes here. Definetly worth visiting and remember the victims. You can visit it for free walking by the Danube just in front of the Danube bank.

The imposing St. Stephen's Basilica, built from 1851 to 1905, offers spectacular views of Budapest from its cupola. The building was damaged during World War II, but fortunately most of the mosaics that decorated its walls were saved. This popular attraction is dedicated to Hungary's holy king and the founder of the Hungarian state St. Stephen.
This is very beautiful basilica in center of town. It is one of the postcard image place of Budapest. There is no charge to see the Basilica, it is free of charge but you should give some donation. Also you can go on the top to have a panoramic view which cost you around 10 euro, there is an elevator. There are lots of good restaurant nearby

St. Stephen's Basilica in Budapest is a magnificent architectural gem that left me in awe. The basilica's imposing dome, reaching a height of 96 meters, dominates the city's skyline and offers a visual treat for visitors. As I stepped inside, the grandeur of the interior took my breath away. The ornate decorations, intricate carvings, and stunning stained glass windows created a serene and majestic atmosphere. One of the highlights of my visit was the chance to view the basilica's most precious relic, the mummified right hand of St. Stephen himself, the first king of Hungary. This sacred relic is housed in a beautifully adorned reliquary, and its significance adds a spiritual touch to the basilica's historical importance. Climbing to the top of the dome was an unforgettable experience. The panoramic views of Budapest from the observation deck were simply breathtaking. I marveled at the stunning architecture of the city, with its iconic landmarks and the sweeping Danube River. Exploring the basilica's interior was a captivating journey. The intricate details of the statues, altars, and frescoes were a testament to the skill and artistry of the craftsmen. I enjoyed wandering through the various chapels, admiring the beautiful artwork and feeling a sense of peace and tranquility. Overall, my visit to St. Stephen's Basilica was an absolute delight. The impressive dome, the sacred relic, the awe-inspiring views, and the opportunity to explore its magnificent interior made it an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend adding this architectural masterpiece to your itinerary when visiting Budapest.

ST. STEPHEN'S BASILICA It is named in honor of Stephen, the first King of Hungary (c. 975–1038), whose right hand is preserved in the reliquary. The basilica features a Greek cross ground plan. While we didn't visit the interior of the church, we purchased tickets from the ticket office located across from the right side of the church and ascended to the exterior balcony encircling the church's dome, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding city. The steps to reach there are quite a few, but the experience is truly rewarding, especially as you reach the vast area beneath the external dome, where you can glimpse the interior dome of the church.
Orestis - — Google review
Such a stunning building. The ticket office is just off to the side. Expect to queue to buy your ticket. We bought the combined ticket which I recommend so you can get the fantastic views from the top. There are lifts to each part but you will have to climb a few stairs regardless. One of the most interesting things was St Stephen's hand kept in a case.
Coralie Pattenden — Google review
For sure, it is one of the most impressive buildings in Budapest and Europe. The outside is beautifully lightened during the night, and the details of its facade can be viewed during the daytime. In December, you'll also have the chance to visit one of Europe's most astonishing Christmas markets here. The inside is also a strong recommendation for all tourists. Usually, prices and waiting times are okay if you're not visiting during prime season.
Stephan Wagener — Google review
Beautiful by day, beautiful by night. It's well worth paying to see the panoramic view, especially the sunset. To go up, you have the option of a lift (there are two - with a long queue) and stairs. Be aware that there are a LOT of stairs and spiral staircases. Be prepared 🏋🏻‍♀️
Nathasha Alves — Google review
Got the ticket for inside the church, treasury and terrace dome. The Full ticket is definitely worth it, inside is amazing and the terrace views are second to none on this side of the river. The treasury is less impressive and can be missed imo.. There's 307 steps and Further steps at the top so not suitable if you can't climb the steps

St. Stephen's Basilica, a masterpiece of architecture and spirituality, graces Budapest with its neoclassical beauty. It is as beautiful from the outside as it is from the inside. The soaring columns and mosaic-adorned domes inside look truly gorgeous. Don't miss the panoramic lookout offering stunning city views.

One of the Budapest must visits. Come early as it's very busy here. I suggest getting the rooftop combo package. A striking basilica from outside, it's a great photo opportunity. Inside is mind blowing. Such beautiful and reverence. A true blessing to the almighty creator. There are roped off spots for quiet prayer and reflection. Please take your hat off indoors. A group of Chinese tourists unfortunately showed a lack of respect by refusing to do so. The treasure room is interesting with luxurious and historical relics from previous bishops. The rooftop had great views on rainy or sunny days. It's worth the extra effort. You can take the lazy elevator or take the stairs like I did. Combined ticket is 3500HUF or free for teachers

What an beautiful Basilica! We purchased tickets to hear Ave Maria and the acoustics were excellent. Take the time to wander around inside and see the art and altars. This is a functioning church so act accordingly. The Christmas fair outside is well done and had a lot to offer (much more than Vienna). This is on stop you should not miss.

Indeed, a treat for the eyes. St Istvan’s (Stephen’s) Basilica is one of the best architectures of Budapest. Although we didn’t get a chance to enter inside Basilica, we were delighted by the minute details of the arts engraved on the exterior walls. I am looking forward to visit the church again so that I can get a chance to enter and enjoy the panoramic view of Budapest from its terrace.

The place at the time of visit was crowded, but still had the time and space for observing and appreciating the architecture. It is of great historical importance to the people. Lovely Basilica. The center of the city. Extravagant interiors but nothing different than say, St Peter's Basilica in Rome which is FREE. If you feel like giving a forced donation by buying a ticket, please do make the pope happy! I loved getting the free (voluntary tipping) walking tour with the guy in the red umbrella everyday at 11 am - i tipped as much as the entrance and was the best introduction to Budapest for 2.5 hours. andraci Avenue just behind it is fantastic to walk.

A beautiful basilica, we really enjoyed our visit there. This is the largest church in Budapest. To access the dome, you can use 364 steps or the elevator, and this offers amazing views. The entrance is approximately £10 pp.

Really nice place. If you want to go in , you need to buy a ticket from the ticket office next to the church. There is 2 different tickets Either just church or church and viewing gallery. The viewing gallery has a lift ( actually 2 ) to get up and down or if your daft as a brush. You can use the stairs.

The view from the panoramic terrace is definitely worth the price of admission! You can see the entire city skyline from atop the basilica. I also saw the treasury, which had some very nice art, statues, and various Catholic accoutrements. The basilica itself has some beautiful architecture, finely detailed with statues of many saints and religious figures. I would say that anyone would find this place interesting. Stephen's Basilica is already very impressive from the outside, and it's even more impressive inside! The size of the basilica is huge and interiors are very richly decorated. It's worth buying a ticket with entry to the Panoramic Terraces, because the view of the city from above is beautiful!
Michał Kiełczyński — Google review
If you're visiting Budapest, the Basilica is an absolute must-see. This stunning architectural marvel is not just a feast for the eyes but also offers an enriching cultural experience. The highlight for many visitors, including myself, is the organ concert held at 5 PM. The acoustics of the Basilica paired with the skilled organist create an unforgettable auditory experience that resonates deeply within the grand walls of this sacred space. Whether you're an architecture enthusiast, a lover of classical music, or simply seeking a serene and beautiful place to reflect, the Basilica in Budapest will not disappoint. I highly recommend scheduling your visit to coincide with the organ concert for an experience that is truly sublime.

Probably the most beautiful basilicum I ever visited! Don't miss king Stephen's (not Stephen King 😉) naturally mummified right hand, which is one of the most significant Hungarian national relics. It's located in a box at the right side.

Just simply amazing, probably the most grandeur thing in the city of Budapest. The view from the top is also breathtaking, especially during sunset. Be aware though there is an elevator that will take you near the top, you’ll still need to take some stairs more until you reach the viewing platform.

It was an amazing experience the building itself was absolutely magnificent and the architecture humbles you. The inner section of the church takes you back in the era of kings and kingdoms and the artwork was truly something else. Last but not least the view on the floor is awe-inspiring I was left stunned from you could all of Budapest.

The House of Terror is a museum in Hungary documenting the effect of Nazi and Soviet regimes on Hungary and the victims. It includes a permanent exhibit about crimes and atrocities committed by both regimes.
Moving, superbly setup museum on a tough topic. Small museum but extremely well setup for visitors with audio guides in most languages that automatically trigger as you enter a given room. This was a killer feature that made the visit even more easy to traverse. Extremely inexpensive and well maintained. Man’s inhumanity to man is well documented and movingly portrayed. I wish every museum was so well setup. One can spend 3 hours at the museum easily to do it justice.

Very easy to find, nice and quiet place. Tickets cost 3000 per person,if you are EU citizen younger than 26 you get some discounts. They will tell you to not take any pictures, and they try to monitor that very well, not all of them succeed 😊 Anyways good experience, well worth the money.
Vilnis Volkovics — Google review
This museum is absolutely critical to educate both Hungarians and tourists on the horrors of communism and totalitarianism in the country. The stories, images and artifacts remind us all the value of democracy and how fragile it is, and the high cost we all pay when we lose it. My rating was mostly due to the lack of opportunity to present a more forceful and impactful message, most messages were in the form of videos with Hungarian audio, poor or no English signage made the message dissipate. I hope it is remodeled to create a better impact and easier for the international audience to absorb.

Great experience in here! A little creepy but really well made, you can learn a lot more about the dark pages of Hungarian history and feel a real contact with those times... Really recommended! Not good for impressionable people though

My 10 year old son, and I visited. We did the audio tour which was a bit too detailed and long-winded. We skipped some of the sections, but it was still very informative. The best part is at the end in the basement. We checked our backpacks in the luggage storage, and it worked very well.
Karolina Wintermann — Google review
Me and my brother (USA, 18 and 19) spent 2.5 hours here. We did not get the audio guide. Like other reviews - the staff is at the very least NOT friendly. It cost us $23.49 USD for 2 of us - full price tickets (they do not have student discounts for students with citizenship outside the EU area). Almost everything is written in Hungarian, so consider the audio guide IF 1. you have more time or 2. You really like learning /history. There was enough details for us from the many many videos with English subtitles and the one pager descriptions in about half of the rooms. Overall we learned about a side of history barely taught in American classrooms and so I find this to be a MUST VISIT, even with all the negatives. We came in at 10:10 and had to wait 10 minutes in a line to buy tickets. When we exited around 12:45 there was a pretty long line stretching outside the building (probably 20-30 minute wait).

Its difficult to describe a visit to this museum as enjoyable given its focus. But, if you want to learn about the recent history of Hungary, this is a good place to start. We took the audio guide as we were unsure how much would be in English. Turned out that there are A4 sized cards on the wall in each exhibit/room in English you can take out and read. We still enjoyed having the audio guide. My teenager particularly found this museum fascinating. She listened to every bit of the audio guide and read absolutely every piece of information in here she could find. We spent several hours here having a break for lunch. Even if you haven't much time, a walk round over an hour or so will give you a good taste of what is in this museum & if you are an English speaker, the A4 info cards will be sufficient for you to grasp each exhibit. Some of the old videos displayed recounting this time period are harrowing & a sobering reminder of such recent history.

First of all the reason I'm knocking a star off is because the staff are so unfriendly and you aren't supposed to take pictures.. I have no idea why that would be though. Otherwise, it's good value for money, educational, and a really interesting place.
Christian Hoffman — Google review
A decent place to go if you have an extra day at Budapest. Don't reserve your day specially for visiting this. It is about the history of world war but feels like it's just one side of story (which is totally understandable). The audio guide is recommended, and the entry fee is 10 Euro. It takes around 1.5 hour for the full tour. Taking pictures inside is not allowed.
Udit Mehta — Google review
When visiting Budapest, the House of Terror should definitely be visited and enriches the city trip. In general, this museum shows the time of Budapest/Hungary under National Socialism and the time under Communism. The museum illustrates well how two very different political directions nevertheless intersect in their cruelty. Admission is fine. I would really recommend an audio guide, as there is a lot of information in it and it can be relatively uninteresting without one. I would also recommend visiting at weekends when there are no school groups. There are lockers in the museum for storing valuables. Inside it was very very humid and warm - I would take water with me.
Martin — Google review
I give only 3 stars because the real goldmine of information, documents, images and exhibits is very, very badly organised. The itinerary of the visit is not clearly explained, and one can deduce it only if he knows the history and the events (I did it, but not the same for several visitors, who were wandering inside the venues with no clue of what to see first). The volume of propaganda music and speeches was so loud to overwhelm the audio guide explanations. The captions - when available...- were often only in Hungarian. The wardens spoke NO English at all. Finally, few places to sit. A real pity.
Gianluca Manfredelli — Google review
This was a sobering exposé of atrocities in the post WW2 and Soviet occupation era. It was a thorough and well documented timeline showing the impact to the daily lives of ordinary citizens caught in the crosshairs of war. The only criticisms are that the museum would itself become another terror in the event of a fire, given the overcrowding of visitors, close quarters and unlabeled fire exits. The English audio guide also portrayed the Hungarian politicians as being forced unwillingly into choosing sides in WW2 due to being squeezed between Germany and Russia, with no mention of their aspirations to retake land lost after WW1.
John Miller — Google review
The climate in this place is just amazing. So good idea to create this that much scary. The things presented are just facts. There's a lot of videos. Don't take the audio guide as this does not help you to focus on what you see or watch. On the other hand it works just terrible. Sometimes switches automatically (mostly in the rooms with videos) where in quiet rooms without and texts doesn't work and you need to turn on manually. I have found it rather disturbing after just 5 minutes. The organization is half good. That means you start 2nd floor and follow the arrows until 1st floor. Then the access to the basement is something you need to figure out on your own also with direction.
Krzysztof Sucharski — Google review
Visiting the museum is only comprehensible with audio guides; without them, you're left bewildered (especially if you do not understand Hungarian). While the atmosphere is great (and the overall setup), it's overshadowed by the lack of English explanations for tourists, leaving them at a disadvantage. Important to mention: No photos allowed.

Rosenstein Restaurant is a two-story family-run restaurant that specializes in Hungarian fish soup, beef and veal dishes. It is located a block from the main train station in Budapest.
The restaurant is simply amazing. The owner himself is the cook. The atmosphere and the interior is quite nice. It's not too big, the service was great and the food extraordinary good. You need to eat there when you stay in Budapest.

What a wonderful dinner! My god… everything was amazing from start to finish. Janus, who was my waiter, was just the best. His recommendations were awesome and he is the nicest guy ever. Loved everything about it. The goulash soup and the catfish with cottage cheese pasta was to die for. In the end, the chef, and owner, sent me a signed copy of their cookbook since he couldn’t make to the table for being super busy. It’s a five star for me in Budapest!
Bruno Paiva — Google review
The food here is incredible! I ordered the goulash soup which was fabulous and my mother and girlfriend agreed. Ask for sour cream and add it to the soup it’s even better! I had the venison with orange sauce and it was out of this world. My mother had a pasta and my girlfriend had the chicken. All of us were very happy with our meals and the service was excellent. The price for everything was very reasonable especially for the high quality of the food and the server was great. I also had a freshly squeezed orange juice that was fresh & wonderful. I’ll definitely go back here this week it’s that good! Cheers

Our favorite family restaurant in Budapest.. we celebrate here all our family occasions.. Year after year, amazing quality off food , service and atmosphere.. not in the center, but totally worth the ride.. but book a table in advance, because it’s always full.. and people enjoy sitting for nanny hours.. it’s very cozy and inviting

The best meal I ate in Budapest, the food was filled with so much flavour and cooked perfectly. No surprise it’s a hit with celebrities and has so many good reviews. The service was also pretty good, and good value for cost. Only complaint would be that it’s located in a bit of a sketchy area near the train station.

If you are in Budapest-Keleti station and have some hours until your train comes then I would definitely recommend to eat in this great restaurant! It‘s about 7 minutes walking from train station, food is amazing, you can literally find everything (chicken, lamb, duck, fish, vegetarian, pork, deer). Staff is very friendly and service is very good. We had breaded lamb served with onion salad and potato in mayonnaise and deer with orange sauce. Both dishes were very tasty. The lamb had some fats so some people might not like it. You can sit comfortably there, I would very much recommend it.

Mammoth mountains of (delicious) meat. Game, liver, chicken, fish, goose, all cooked to tender goodness and seasoned nicely. Soups and salad galore as well. Portions are large and are usually accompanied by something starchy like a pancake or dumpling. A nice sampling of Hungarian (and other Eastern European) dishes. Service is fast and very tourist- friendly. Recommended!

Wow! Had read that this restaurant was highly recommended - it is every bit worthy of those reviews! Would recommend making a reservation as it does get busy. Beautiful restaurant with friendly, welcoming, helpful, staff and a fine dining but relaxed, fun, atmosphere. The food was impeccable. We had the goose crackling to start, followed by Weiner Schnitzel for me and the Duck Breast for my son. We both had lemonade to accompany the meal - classic and raspberry - again, excellent and did not manage a dessert this time unfortunately. The bill came to HUF22,110 A very reasonable amount for a fabulous experience

Incredible experience for dinner. Amazing, friendly, knowledgeable staff. Which is helpful to navigate the MASSIVE menu! So many great dishes to pick from. We loved the goulash, and the chicken supreme dishes- both paprika and Gorgonzola sauces. Even the homemade bread was excellent. They even have their own house coffee roast. Every dish was delicious and we’d happily do it all over again.

OH....MY... This is hands down one of the best meals I've had in a long time... We ordered the paprika sauce chicken and the potato dumplings were SO GOOD. Cabbage roll (it's Wednesday!) and was so on point, the amount of stuffing and the sourness brought everything to life. And let's NOT forget about the soup, it is one of the best, I swear, left me speechless. We ordered the beef stew and fish soup. Like one of the reviewers said, EVERYTHING was amazing from service to food, the attention to every detail in the food. Even the bread and butter... How is this not in the Michelin guide?!?!?

I would definitely recommend to have a reservation, ideally some day before your visit. The restaurant tries its best to make your visit a very nice one. The food was excellent and the menu was full of interesting options. You can look at the menu online 👍🏻

Arrived Budapest and came here for the first meal. Beautiful menu with well designed traditional dishes. However the waiter who serve us ruined the initial impression. I am not sure what make the waiter’s attitude arrogant, as when I ask for recommendation for the restaurant signature, he said it show on the menu… and didn’t share with as the wine menu. The chef did a good job on the food, seasoning and atmosphere is great, however I felt being mistreated and not professional as hospitality waiter like this beautiful restaurant. Hope he understand everyone is equal to get the good service and detail explanation on the menu!!!! I will go back again if this arrogant attitude can be adjusted.

American here - Had a great experience. Got the venison filet and really enjoyed it. Service was great. Staff was a little abrasive at first but we were able to break that and had a great time with our server. Wife had the teriyaki and vegetable pasta (vegetarian) and she really enjoyed it as well. Overall, great experience and happy we came!

Fantastic food, exactly what I expected which is good! The bone marrow was yum, the schnitzel juicy, the pickles spicy! I had a G&T so cannot comment on the wine but my partner says the wine was good. You can buy roasted coffee to take away, Cook books and even cappuccino glasses. Great service. We did not book but were exceptionally lucky on a Thursday evening to get a table. Ring to book a table especially for the weekend well in advance. Popular and worth it.

Great service, great food and very fair prices. Rosenstein came highly recommended and lived up to expectations. It's a little hard to find, tucked away in a side street on the edge of District 8. Definitely bigger inside than it looked. Goulash soup was great, chestnut puree was something else. Very fancy toilet with built in hygienic seat cover too!

Five star experience in the heart of Budapest! As a food and wine lover, this place was like heaven to me. Staff was really nice, and took time to explain me more about Hungarian wines, food was also delicious, deserved Michelin star!

The worst Michelin star restaurant I’ve ever visited. From start to finish, the experience left much to be desired. From leaving us standing at the door for 5 mins before being acknowledged, not finding our booking despite having called 1h prior to check our details and ask if we could come later, to not being shown our coats upon exit. We told the waiter we don’t want wine today, and yet they asked another 3 times. No means no, I don’t appreciate being pressured to buy a bottle of wine when we just don’t feel like drinking. We kept having different waiters, not one remembered who ordered what so kept asking what everyone ordered, both drinks and meals. The waiter carried 3 plates on one hand which caused the starters to slip and slide all over the place. I moved it back in the middle for photos but that’s not how it left the kitchen and ruins the chef’s hard work that went into plating. For a normal restaurant this service would have been fine, good even, but for a Michelin starred restaurant, I am disappointed. Also, when explaining the courses the waiters seemed to quickly name the ingredients and then go, when I asked for clarification as they spoke too quickly he just walked off pretending not to hear us. I think they don’t know how it is made and although I appreciate there’s a language barrier, there’s also a lack of passion in the staff. I enjoyed the bread the most, the squid ink bread was fantastic and I must say the starter was delicious! Needless to say, I won’t be returning on my next visit to Budapest.

The tasting menu and wine pairing were excellent. The venison especially was delicious. The waiter was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about wine. My partner doesn't eat fish but they were happy to swap out the fish dish from the tasting menu with another dish which meant she could enjoy the rest of the tasting menu - superb service.

Absolutely the best food experience I have ever had. My friend is a picky eater and a vegetarian and they tailored the degustation menu to fit her needs and it was 10/10, the wines were out of this world (all Hungarian) and the waiters were really sweet and took their time explaining both the food and the wine. I’m coming back to this restaurant that’s for sure! Also, I’m not a dessert person at all, but the dessert had me leave the place in love with life and everything in it.

We probably received the best service we had in Budapest. The food was also exceptional (but beware the portions are big in my opinion). We ordered the pasta for starter, a celery soup, and ribs for main. The highlight for me was the pasta - so rich and delicious. The wine pairing was also exceptional. Would definitely recommend if you’re in town!
Daniel Lo — Google review
Borkonyha was an incredible Michelin star experience- starting with the bread with squid ink and the pesto bread was a delicious way to start We followed with the celery truffle dish which was to die for and then the fish and the the veal dumplings for mains For desert we had a beautiful matcha and 70% dark chocolate dessert and some complimentary small desserts too. The staff, wine, service and food was amazing. And it was also super affordable especially considering the high level of ingredients, flavour and 5 star service. A must visit when in Budapest!

Phenomenal dinner at Borkonyha. One of the best duck liver mousse appetizers I have ever had, plus a really flavorful beef sirloin with corn and mushroom. Great wine selection and attentive service. A true classic with a very modern twist in Budapest.

My best dining experience in Budapest, 10 out of 10. I was received with warm and friendly service, with (pleasantly, of course!) creative dishes and very nice wine recommendation. I had the 6-course tasting menu. The dishes were flavourful yet delicate, not too heavily seasoned, which I appreciated very much. I love how they let each ingredient’s own taste shine. In fact I was so excited that I forgot to take picture of the first course :) Some dishes took an interesting turn but it turned out to be my favourite (the sorbet, yes). It was a great regret of me that I forgot to ask for the name of the staffs on that day! First of all thank you for giving the table; second the hospitality, and passion in introducing the dishes and ensuring a delightful experience of the guests. There was a bit of hiccup during the time, but it could never overshadow the pleasant experience. I would definitely come back and recommend to my friends if they visit Budapest. One last note - this place is in demand! I was lucky to have a table for one by walk-in. Make sure to book in advance!

A beautiful and very clean restaurant with polite and friendly staff. The food was great. There were 3 things that bothered me somehow. The lack of music, the fact that there weren't women working there (at least in the front ) and that if you are a vegan i don't think that you could eat here ( but as a vegetarian it's ok ).

Everything about Borkonyha is perfect, but to pin our absolute favourite is their service. Their staff hold great knowledge of their dishes and are able to introduce them in detail. They give fantastic wine recommendations, exactly what we ask for. One of their staff, Dominique, if you are reading this, we cannot be more grateful for your attentive service. As my mum was holding a heavy large bag, you are detail-minded enough to give her a hook to hold that. He was able to describe and explain every dish on the menu as well. Dominique, thank you so much for your efforts. You made our day. As for food, absolutely fantastic is all I can say. We had beef and also fish. Everything is a perfect harmony. Our favourite meal in Budapest so far. I definitely recommend Borkonyha to everyone!

Good food, Warm service. This is Almost as good as Gundel which is our no.1 choice in Budapest. The bread here is excellent and I am a bread person, my family owned a bakery shop for more than three decades. The sauces that came with the bread made me eat more bread than I would want! Welcome dish is such a treat. Main dish: The fish and duck is well done, Anges beef is done just right with the sauces I like. Although, the meat texture is not top rated, after all beef in this country doesn't match up to USDA Beef, so the Chief has done well on preparing the beef. We are satisfied. Pictures will speak the rest. We are all very happy for this meal.

Excellent restaurant and without a doubt the best meal I had in Budapest. Top quality of ingredients, tasty and beautiful dishes. The bread, amuse bouche and mini deserts that were offered in addition to our meal were also excellent. The friendly and professional service completed this experience. In terms of practical matters, we were able to get a table for 2 people without a reservation on a Monday night. Absolutely worth trying if you're in the area.

What a great experience this was. From beginning to end, we were completely taken care of with such incredible food. We decided to come here for my wife's birthday for the wine selection and also the a'la carte menu. We ended up ordering nearly the entire menu, which was way too much food, but we did not regret it at all. Every bite of food here was absolutely perfect, and I can see how they were awarded a star. It's hard to pick a favorite anything on the menu, and everything had such amazing contrast while being prepared with excellence. Also, I am honestly not much of a wine connoisseur, but I also must mention that the quality of wine here was noticeably superior. This place is not overrated, nor is it underrated. I think that for quality and reputation, this place is absolutely worth it in every way.

Amazing restaurant with great value for money. We had the degustation menu and every course was spot on with lots of flavour. What we especially liked was that for once there were a lot of guests between the ages of 25 and 40 there, it gives it a fresh feel for a fine dining restaurant. We also noted that each course had some component that paid hommage to eastern european cusine, be it pickles, dumplings, beet root or buckwheat. The wine recommendation was also spot on. Thank you for a great evening!

Dined here Sunday evening and was greeted by a very friendly face. Even though they were very busy, they found us a table in the back room. We were looked after by Raul, who couldn’t have been more attentive and helpful. A very friendly and pleasant fella. The food was first class, lovely presentation; vibrant and fresh and just drew you in. The flavours were unbelievable, especially the pitta breads and the Mazel Tov beetroot salad. I loved the atmosphere anf the service was very good. Make sure you make a reservation. Quite popular place. The food was mixed. Beautiful restaurant with a diverse menu, with a focus on authentic Israeli flavours. We tried the sweet potato fries, hummus bowl with chicken, tabbouleh salad, and beef grill plate, and all were delicious! Slightly disappointing service; it took a while for someone to take our order and the food took about 25 minutes. May have been an exception, given all the positive reviews on service. Overall, definitely worth a visit!

Make a reservation! Specifically during the weekends or you'll stay in line quite some time. This is a posh place. That being said, this is a cool place to have drinks with friends, they have a huge assortment of cocktails. But in my opinion this is not a place to have dinner but to have snacks with your drinks because portions are small and food is nothing special. Overall I enjoy visiting Mazel Tov.

One of my top dining spots when I go to Budapest. Both the setting and the service are outstanding. Gabriel, who served as our host, was incredibly kind and accommodating. He also made some excellent food recommendations. Even though we were a group of 9, our drinks and food were still delivered quite quickly. Due to its popularity, we had to make our reservations two months in advance, but it was completely worth it. They had everything set up for our dinner, which was a birthday celebration. They brought a bottle of champagne and some cake at the end.

The atmosphere and interior are magical. The service was by far the best we had in Budapest, friendly, fast efficient and enthusiastic. The food was good but not outstanding in my opinion. We had the hummus bowl, the asparagus chefs special (which was the most interesting) and the aubergine salad. I would return for the service, atmosphere and try different dishes.

Easily the best meal we have had in Budapest. Service by Kalam was exceptional. He was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. The venue is beautiful, tucked away on a side street, you will find a restaurant nestled in a tranquil "forest-like" setting. The food is fantastic, the selection is great and we indulge thoroughly. Lovely little play area for the little humans too. Mazel Tov is a must visit in Budapest.

Delicious Israeli food. I loved my Shakshuka but the beef patty was even better. The highlight of our meal were the sweet potato fries which were out of this world delicious. Don't miss that one if you're dining here!

Discovering this gem in Budapest was an absolute delight! The ambiance is top notch with fantastic live music that adds to the already great vibes. Be prepared for a bit of a wait, as it can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to get a table – a reservation is a smart move to avoid the queue. The culinary experience was impressive every dish we tried was bursting with flavor and left us wanting more. The staff deserves a special shout-out for their exceptional service; they were incredibly friendly and made our dining experience even more enjoyable. I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a memorable meal in Budapest. It's a must visit spot that I'm eager to return to on my next trip. A big thank you to the team for such a wonderful evening.

We stopped by late for some desert and cocktails on a Sunday night. Short wait in line (15-20 minutes?). excellent cocktails, most of them on the sweet side, but great. The cheesecake was really good!

Loved this place! Some of the tastiest Israeli/Middle Eastern food I’ve ever had. You definitely need to make a reservation as we arrived on Saturday and I couldn’t get a table until the day we left on Tuesday at lunchtime. But it was well worth it.

This is a lovely gem in the old Jewish quarter behind the synagogue. Don't be fooled the looks from the outside. It's absolutely a wonderful place inside. Remember to book you table online. We had a great lunch with a nice Hungarian white wine suggested by the waitress. This was our best meal in Hungary. So full of taste and freshness.

This was my first stop once I checked into Budapest. The restaurant is just so pretty! We went around 3 pm so found a table easily. The staff was quick to take the orders and get us our food. I went for a chickpea lentil salad and it was delicious. We. Also got zaatar sticks and they were good as well. I would love to go back some day :)

Food was amazing. We didn't have reservations but going later in the evening helped. Staff are initially energetic and food comes out fast. However, after the mains, we had to wait a while before a staff member could cone and take our orders for dessert. The Jerusalem cheesecake- definitely try it!

Came with my sister and this was our first meal in Budapest, and it was a lovely start. Our waiter was really lovely, the platter we had was delicious, was good and the atmosphere was lovely. Didn’t make a reservation at the time but they had available seats. I feel the waters definitely encourage you to get more things but start with a few as it might be bigger than you think. Also, most of their cocktails were either on the sour or fresh side, maybe some sweet options would be good. Overall would recommend and would go back. :)

The food is super tasty and well seasoned! Be prepared to make a table reservation or you will end up like me waiting in line for a table for around 30minutes! 😅 But was so worthy! The place is beautiful and the live music is a great touch. Our waiter was super nice and recommended the Jerusalem cheesecake for us to try and oh boy what a lovely surprise it was, absolutely delicious!

Delicious food, good cocktails and a lovely, dreamy interior decor with friendly staff and feel good vibes. They also sometimes have great live music! I try to pop by this place every time I visit the city and it never disappoints. Be aware though that it is extremely popular and crowded so expect to wait for a table if you go at peak times

My family and I had the pleasure of dining at Mazel Tov during our vacation in Budapest, we are so glad we decided to dine here, it was a memorable experience. The ambiance of this restaurant is amazing!!!!. As you step inside, you're instantly transported to what feels like a beautiful garden. The abundance of plants and greenery creates a charming and relaxing atmosphere that's hard to beat. The service was top-notch. The waiter was friendly, making you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. We didn’t have reservations, but we were seated right away. Now, let's talk about the food. It's nothing short of amazing. The menu offers a diverse range of options, and every dish we tried was a burst of delicious flavors. Mazel Tov is a hidden gem that combines a stunning ambiance, warm and welcoming service, and mouthwatering cuisine. It's a must-visit when visiting Budapest you won’t leave disappointed.

Great place to eat in Budapest with very good vibes and live music. If you can make a reservation that would be great, if not, you can wait from 15 minutes until 1 hour, luckily we only waited 20 minutes The dood is delicious. We ordered some sandwiches, hummus bowl and desserts. I loved the restaurant. I had seen photos, but I didn't expect it to be so pretty when I arrived, it is beautiful. I was also surprised by the live music. The staff was very friendly. Thank you very much for the service!! I totally recommend this place and I would definitely come back next time I’m in Budapest.

Man this was a great experience!! Before my trip to Budapest I researched restaurants and this came near the top and let me tell you it was great!!! The food was great, the atmosphere was super cool, beer was delish and so was the seasonal pumpkin spice cake. But the biggest was my waiter. He went above and beyond explaining what were top sellers as well as the chicken dish that was unique to them. Definitely pay this place a visit!!

Some of the best food I’ve eaten in Europe. The atmosphere and decor of this place is incredible, and the service was second to none. My only regret is that I couldn’t try more things off the menu because there was no room left in my stomach.

Loved Mazel To! I recommend reservations, otherwise you'll likely have to wait a bit for a table. Even on a weekday night around 9, there was a bit of a wait. The restaurant is beautiful, with lots of greenery and string lights to set the vibe. On the night I was there, the live music was INCREDIBLE. I'd follow that band anywhere they were playing. Our server was Edina, and she was great - friendly and helpful. Food and cocktails were tasty - my favourites were the small share plates like the cauliflower and hummus.

This sprawling, grand café with neoclassical details and a walnut-and-apricot Gerbeaud slice as much venerated as the building itself, has been in operation for over 150 years. It still greets visitors with its favorite flavors - walnut, apricot and chocolate - in an elegant setting where gilded furnishings and ornate chandeliers reign supreme.
Timeless classic that deserves it excellent reputation. I had the Gerbeaud 160. One of their newer creations. A birthday cake for their 160 birthday. It was amazing. I highly recommend this place. Then interior decor is gorgeous also.

I enjoyed the experience at Cafe Gerbeaud a lot. The interior is very elegant, and the cakes match it perfectly. The taste of their cakes is impressive, every ingredient's taste is distinctive, great quality. They also have a very good coffee, I had a latte and it was delicious. The one thing I'd say wasn't ideal is that the tables are pretty close to one another and you can't really enjoy an intimate experience, but other than that everything else was great.

Cafe Gerbeaud one of the oldest cafe in Budapest. The best place for a coffee / teatime. I strongly recommend you to try their finest pastries. The service was great , very welcoming. Price : Coffee + cake around 20 Euro . To Go : you can get same things with half price

They have some great desserts. They also have some very average ones too. I had the 160 chocolate cake and the Dobas torte. We also had three other desserts, which were terrible (walnut torte, blackberry torte (tasteless) and a walnut concoction with cream). Service was pretty bad too. We were constantly ignored. They even walked away from us when we arrived. When we could actually capture their attention, they were very polite (automated). Been here a few times in the past, I doubt I’ll come again. They’ve now become overpriced. It was full of tourists too, so on the verge of becoming a tourist trap.

Excellent food in middle of city center of Budapest.. Delicious lunch choice with amazing deserts. Service very friendly as pleasant outside seating. Interiors are unique en demonstrate richness of the city architecture. Highly recommended and not to be missed if you are in Budapest.

Came here twice in two days as loved it so much. The first time we came, we just had coffees and sat outside as it was warm. The second time, we st inside as it was chilly outside and had coffee and we also shared a cake (needed to remortgage but we couldn't come here and not have a cake!). So pretty and loved the little pipette of alcohol to squeeze into the middle of the cake. Such a treat. Loved it here. If I lived in Budapest, I'd save my pennies and come here every week for a coffee and people watch. Fabulous coffee house.

We came here to try the famous dobos cake. We were seated immediately and quickly had our order taken. We enjoyed coffee and a slice of dobos cake, it was delicious. It did take a while for us to get our checks. We did notice several other people who weren't attended to while we waited to pay. The service could've been better for such an elegant place.

2023: Café Gerbeaud's had quite a long history of dealing traditional Hungarian cake slices, being well situated in the heart of the city for over 160 years. The cakes are on the pricey side, about $17AUD per slice. I can say that's the most I've paid for a slice of cake ever globally. Warranted if the cakes had me frothing at the mouth, however, this was not the case and I sense this being more of a tourist trap. Impressive building, cake's not so much.

A must visit in Budapest when you celebrate patisserie and architecture- all in one. As you walk in, you travel in time with an elegant display of exquisite cakes, desserts, and beautiful bites. Read its history while you enjoy house-beverages. I read ahead and had my eye on the menu. Online, I saw some pictures. At the restaurant, the menu has a description of savory dishes only. The chandeliers are breathtaking! Prices are just as most elegant cafés so expect to pay about 25 euros per person for a light bite. Easy to find, hard to leave. Enjoy

One of the finest places to go for coffee cakes and Hungarian Bristol dishes. Beautiful building both from the outside and inside. High ceilings with beautiful chandeliers, all golden made it look so Elite. You can definitely go there on a date. Coffee/beer/wine with some very good options to accompany such as pastries/sandwiches makes it a great place to spend some quality time. The staff is friendly too with beautiful smile on their faces. Highly recommend!!

Gorgeous, historical cafe and confectionery in the heart of Budapest! Usually it is busy due to the high interest by the tourists. The waitress and waiters are very kind m, they speak English. You can have here a breakfast, snack, lunch and dinner or just caffe and traditional Hungarian cakes, they are fresh and delicious. The prices are according to the uniqueness and the location of the place, 12% service fee is added to the bill. Card is accepted. I recommend to visit the place when the Christmas market is open at the Vörösmarty square.

A very nice cafe in the very center with a spirit of history dating back to the mid-19th century. The desserts were delicious, the Caramel and Coffee ice cream too! Satisfied since coming here!

Before coming to Budapest we already knew that we wanted to visit Cafe Gerbeaud. We left it for our last meal and now we have an amazing culinary memory. The desserts were excellent - not to sweet and full of different tastes. And the place's unique climate made it a highly recommendable experience.

Beautiful café!!! Definitely recommending to come here and enjoy the ambiance. I'm not a big fan of very sweet deserts, and cakes we had here were like ... next level sweet. Especially the Grebaud cake, which was pretty dry as well. Staff is very professional and hospitable.

Nice cafe in Budapest. We came here twice because they have delicious desserts and it is such a nice cafe to drink coffee or lemonade (the best one is the raspberry lemonade). They have a terrace and also seats inside where you can also buy things as souvenirs. Nice service. Not cheap.

The cakes were delicious and so was the coffee. Atmosphere definitely holds up to its name. However, we did wait for our order a bit too long and I do think some cake are a little bit overpriced.

It’s expensive but well worth it. Not a boy is the building beautiful and centrally located, but the coffees and cakes were delicious. The almond flat white is superb and went well with a peanut butter soft crunch cake. Yes, it’s touristy - but for a reason!

The ambience and pastries are truly memorable. However, was a bit surprised by the staff’s lack of warmth. Despite mentioning my birthday and asking for a simple candle on my cake, not only was I charged for the candle, but no one even gave a basic birthday greeting.

Had a brief afternoon visit here a while ago, most enjoyable. Service was great - staff were attentive, kind and helpful. Gorgeous interior that welcomes one in and holds your awe. Top tier cafe for desserts and drinks. Wonderful location to sit and enjoy the view, both inside and outside.

I must say the cakes were delicious! The double prices for dinning in are little bit disappointing but let's be honest it is not an everyday restaurant. Definitely worth sitting down and enjoying the beautiful decor! Coffe is very very good!

I went on Christmas Day and had brunch. The scrambled eggs were presented nicely but I think I liked the salad better than the eggs as they didn’t have much flavor. The coffee was also overpriced for what you get. I wanted to try their famous slice and decided to get it to go as the price was less than half for takeaway compared to eating it there! When I ate it at home later I was very disappointed with how it tasted…quite dry and very bland…I’m not sure why that’s their famous cake!? I wish I had chosen something else, maybe one of their other cakes is much better. The service and ambience of the restaurant are top notch, just don’t go expecting to be blown away by the food.

This restaurant is situated in one of the city's largest pedestrian areas. The setting is quite pleasant, and the natural daylight inside creates a somewhat unique atmosphere. Tables are well spaced, providing a comfortable eating experience. The service is reliable, though it could be warmer. We thoroughly enjoyed the meals we had there. I wouldn’t recommend the lemonade, but everything else was very good. It’s the perfect spot for a brunch.

Great atmosphere! They are super busy so it’s going to take some time to be served by you can enjoy the ambiance while you wait. This is a historic place with beautiful architecture. We came around Christmas time and they had lots of beautiful ornaments and pretty home things and gifts in their shop.

Welcomed and offer indoor or outdoor seating. I opted for the carrot cake special and the orange liqour coffee. Also had a scoop of icecream with the cake. The ice cream was the best I have tried in the city. Service warm and friendly. It is on the pricey side but well worth a visit for a treat!

When in Budapest this is a must visit. This place is located in the centre of Budapest and has a beautiful decor. We had to wait in line to be seated but it didn’t take long to enter. We were seated in the main room with a great overview. They have a wide selection of pastries. I chose the Sissi tart of course with hot chocolate. Both were delicious but with a price tag. Overall a once in a lifetime experience.

This is the oldest café in Budapest, definitely worth a visit. I've been here many times and have never been disappointed. I usually come for their cakes; the cakes and their service are both of high quality! Here's a local tip for everyone: the price for takeaway cakes is half off, while it's full price for dining in! So, if you're in a hurry but want to savor their cakes, consider getting them to go ;)

Két Szerecsen is a bistro in Budapest that serves tapas-style plates, Hungarian dishes, and breakfast. It is set on the ‘Broadway of Budapest’ and has a relaxed atmosphere.
Came here in May 2022. The place is great for Hungarian food, but also has some international dishes for those who wants something else. We went with tapas for starters and they were all great. The squid (tapas) was excellent even though we were a bit hesitant due to Budapest being far from the sea. It was really good. The aubergine spread too (also a tapas). I had chicken paprikas and it was served with 3 chicken legs on the bone. Service is mature, friendly and good. Local wines - we got a bottle recommended and it is very good. We sat outside where the trees are surrounding us and making a beautiful scene for the meal. Definitely not a tourist trap.

The food here is quite delicious. I would highly recommend trying the leg of duck or the duck breast. Everything was very well prepared here, my only alteration would be to reduce the amount of sodium in the Hen soup, for me it was quite salty. I will definitely return, this is an excellent restaurant.

Fantastic dinner. The waiters were great, they paid close attention to the needs of the guests, and gave wonderful recommendations. The food was outstanding and you can tell that it was made with immense precision and with the highest quality of produce. The atmosphere made the experience even better as you can truly feel that you are in Budapest.

Ordered ribs, pork shoulder, lamb shoulder, chicken legs and chicken Schnitzel all good. Highly recommend ribs and lamb shoulder. We don’t have reservations but arrive earlier than busy hour. They are kind enough to arrange a table for us.

●A select restaurant, with a well thought out and prepared menu at the highest gastronomic level! ●Prices are commensurate with the quality of the ingredients and the techniques used to prepare the food. It is definitely worth having dinner here at least once. Even though the place is quite crowded during the evening, and the waiters are so busy, the lady who served us was very nice and attentive to us. ●The dishes we tried were: 1. Tomato Risotto with basil and chicken breast: 7/10 (the breast wasn't cooked properly as you can see in the picture, is still pink)... 2. Thai Green Curry with chicken: 10/10 (divine dish!!!!!! the best curry ever! totally recommend it! 3. the desert, Millefeuille with vanilla cream and strawberries: 10/10 (Pictures taken in September 2021)

My absolute pick for a local bistro. The best restaurant I ate in Budapest in my travels, just pick what ever on the menu it will never disappoint. This time we came without a reservation and they managed to find us a table for 90 minutes, the service is so welcoming. We had an amazing nicoise salad with red tuna, duck breast and many other dishes. Just plain wonderful. Just keep up the good work and don't change.

I went for Sunday breakfast and tried the Hungarian style scrambled eggs. It was absolutely fantastic! The staff were friendly and the service very smooth- I was surprised how quickly the food came out considering how busy it was! The prices are also reasonable for the great quality food. I'll be coming back!

We made a reservation, and I highly recommend doing so as it was consistently packed during our visit. Several groups came in but had to leave as there was no space available. The lemonade was superb; I chose the one with basil and elderflower. The paprika chicken was delicious and beautifully presented on the plates. We were somewhat cramped in a corner and there wasn't much space between the tables. We tried the dessert of the week, which was apple crumble with caramel mascarpone - it was perfectly sweet but became a bit overwhelming after a while. The floating island was delightful and had a generous amount of vanilla sauce. However, when we were finished with both dessert and mains, it took 40 minutes before we were able to pay; several waiters passed by without acknowledging us. The interior decoration was lovely.

Very tasty, nice food, nice and friendly staff. I ordered chicken potato dumplings that came up as a pasta😂 May be it’s either my misunderstanding or just the way they are in this country. Overall was nice, highly recommend to try lamb with yogurt and paprika! Super delicious! Nice and cozy atmosphere and big portions! Super tasty but not that much space in the stomach 😂

Hard to get a reservation but definitely worth it! The food was delicious, that creamy scallion mushroom appetiser was probably the best thing I ate during my entire Budapest trip! The goat cheese potatoes that came with my duck were amazing as well! Maybe the duck was slightly over cooked for my taste but that’s a personal thing :) absolutely recommend this place!

Overall 4* - you will not crave going back the other day but they will serve you a very nicely prepared food that tastes well. If you are looking purely for the best gastronomic experience, probably it's not them. But, if you want something great tasting near Andrassy, you can't go wrong with Két Szerencsen.

If you ask 100 locals, where the best place to eat, traditional Hungarian food would be, 80 of them would say this place. Amazing service with knowledgeable staff, great food that was out extremely timely and an overall friendly vibe. Not to mention, the food wasn’t expensive and the quality was very high. Viki was especially great and walked me through the whole menu. Wish I was spending more time here so I could come back.

I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wishes to try out traditional hungarian cuisine. Our experience was fantastic, everything we had was so flavourful. We were served generous portions, we left the restaurant feeling very full but very happy. Staff was friendly and faultless. Make sure you make a reservation beforehand though.

Great NYE dinner last night — delicious and authentic food, good portions, and attentive service. Everything we had was exceptional. Super tasty terrine, warm and hearty gulyas soup, beef cheeks with dumplings and a very flavorful sauce, great Somloi cake, and more. Also great wine selection. We’ve always loved this place but last night moved it to a different level for us.

Lovely cozy restaurant on a side road off from one of the main artillery roads. This has a menu that initially seems confusing and you would be forgiven to think this was a fusion restaurant, but read the menu carefully and in-between an odd dish here and there is traditional Hungarian food. There is also a specials board. It was delicious. The staff looked stern but after a few smiles they warmed up! The beef was tender like butter, the bread dumplings were perfect. But what stood out was the rice pudding with sour cherries. Wow, amazing. It was our last meal in Budapest and we ended on a high!
