A very well preserved and presented Roman Gladiatorial arena. The supplied interactive audio guide is well made and intuitive to use. The staff are friendly and helpful. You can visit the arena almost in its entirety, with gladiator and matador costume rooms available beneath the podiums. An escape game is also available with hidden riddles and challenges to find and complete around the arena. Descriptive information panels are posted around the arena in multiple languages. If this wasn't your main reason for visiting Nîmes, it should at least be your second. 5/5 must visit.

An outstanding Roman arena undergoing a lot of restoration work. Entry was 10 euros though there are family tickets as well. There is an option to have audio commentary once you are inside. Toilets are on site. There is a bar but only open for events. The exit is through the gift shop which doesn't appear to be too expensive.

Stunning on the outside, but the inside is not worth a visit if you’ve been to Verona or Rome. It’s mainly scaffolding with tribunes for shows. So nothing majorly nice to look at and not photogenic either. You can save yourself the 10 Euro entry fee per adult. If you go though, make sure to get the combo ticket that also only costs 10 Euros and allows also entry to the Tour Magne.

The Amphitheatre of Nîmes is a sight to behold. Standing at an impressive 21 metres tall, the intact colleseum immerses you into ancient Nîmes. The restoration projects that have been ongoing for some 10 years have made a lot of significant and beautiful refurbishments that only enhance the Amphitheatre. While I appreciate the remaining half in the authentic, as it was, way. The "City of the Gods" show was spectacular and a pleasure for all, too. Make sure you book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

Big and beautiful ancient arena, now turn into a concert hall. Looking outside is much more interesting and grand. But inside pretty much full of tool, concert equipments. The audio is interesting to explain about the place and you can visit only half of the arena, due to under construction.

Nimes amphitheatre is another beautiful example of Roman architecture. It was built around 100 AD and is well-preserved today. It was once used for gladiator fights and still hosts various events such as bullfights, concerts and other events. While smaller than the Colosseum in Rome, I was still amazed by the size and design of the arena. I highly recommend going all the way to the top level to enjoy great views of Nimes and the amphitheatre itself.

Very cool Roman amphitheater with a comprehensive audio guide (several languages available) that is more interesting and entertaining than most. Just be sure to bring a photo ID. Very friendly employees here as well who speak English. We didn’t buy tickets in advance but it wasn’t too busy and there was virtually no wait. Lots of concerts/festivals during the summer so unfortunately the middle of the arena was set up with a stage and sound booth etc. - a unique location if you’re attending a concert here but still worth a visit if you’re not.

The Arena is in really good shape. However, a day before we visited it there was a concert inside, so we had a ”pleasure” to see all the construction related to it - that made a negative impact on our experience. There is an audioguide available for anyone interested in learning more about the history of the arena and is a worthwhile addition when looking around the amphitheater. There is a combination ticket available to buy that also includes access to the Maison Carrée and the Tour Magne, I’d recommend buying it if you’re interested in site seeing Nîmes. I’d definitely recommend visiting the Amphitheater of Nîmes.

A sublime park that climbs the hillside until it meets the tower Magne at the summit. The views, sculptures and Roman architecture around the source are all fantastic. Plenty of places to sit and relax with a picnic or sunbathe. Small children's parks are placed throughout with a miniature carousel by the main entrance. It's well maintained and naturally very green, with a mixture of more exotic plants and trees added for variety. The source is also surrounded by various fountains and water features keeping the air cool and fresh. A must visit for all ages!

Despite reviews from some others complaining this beautiful and historical building is empty inside we chose to have a look inside. And were we happy that we did! True, it’s empty in the sense of historical or even original artifacts but come one this place is 2000 years old! Instead the caretakers/owners have done their best to walk visitors through the origins of this unique temple including how it looked like when the Romans built it. Very informative and somewhat interactive. Fascinating place and let’s be honest, how often do you get the chance to walk inside a 2000 years old Roman temple still so intact?!

Tour Magne is a wonderful place to visit, particularly for any intrepid traveller interested in history. The tower has a great panoramic view of Nîmes from its balcony once you have ascended the interior staircase. I’d suggest buying the combination ticket, that also includes the Amphitheater of Nîmes and the Maison Carrée as it’s great value and a useful way of site seeing Nîmes. While walking to the Tour Magne I’d suggest walking through the Jardin de la Fontaine, which is a beautiful public park situated in the heart of Nîmes.

It is a very pleasant walk through the Jardines de la Fontaine and uphill, to this tower, dating back more than 2200 years. The interior of the tower is nothing but stairs; if you are keen on having a great view of Nîmes pay the entrance fee and climb the stairs. Avoid times of high visitor frequency because the platform on top is very small, and there is no traffic control.

In this huge garden, this really beautiful ancient Roman tower is hidden, so to speak. After climbing the hill full of peculiar trees and narrow intertwined streets you arrive at the tower. To reach the top of the tower you have to climb spiral stairs, it is not advisable for those who have vertigo, because the void below could annoy you. The view of the city from above the tower pays off then all the fatigue.

Located on Mount Cavalier, it is a Gallo-Roman monument. It is actually a pre-Roman building transformed in the time of Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD). It is the most imposing vestige of the very long Roman wall of Nîmes. The tower was 18 m high at the end of the 3rd century BC. Then in Roman times it was 36 m high. Today the tower is only 32.50 m high. You can go up the tower and from here there is a beautiful panoramic view of the city.

Very simple, quite destroyed and it truly does not live up to its name, as nobody really knows the deity it was dedicated to, or anything much about it; yet, I still give it 5 stars, as it contains a rather beautiful marble or alabaster relief of five circular bodies creating a pattern similar to that of "the flower of life" from the Levant, while also making up a larger 3D sphere. Never seen anything quite like that in the Roman world. Other interesting nuggets to be found walking around

Roman building from the 1st century. Despite its name, there is no archaeological or literary evidence to indicate that it is a temple or even that it was dedicated to Diana. I spent more than five hours exploring the museum. It is very well organized and offers multimedia tools that make learning much easier. And it entertains you. I have been to several museums, and this is the best one I have been to so far, as it has adapted very well to the current times of teaching. I had the opportunity to visit the American Museum of Natural History in New York and it has a lot to learn from the Musée de la Romanité . As another thing that amazed me was the architecture that looks beautiful on the outside, but it is on the inside where you get the impact. At one moment it is as if you open a shutter and through the window you see the past. And there it is, in all its splendor, the Arena of Nimes. A marvel!

A truly exceptional museum that combines style, artifacts, information and technology to great effect! There is also special attention paid to keeping the museum accessible for those with visual and auditory impairments, with things like physical touchable replicas of objects and relief paintings (with braille, of course) which act as duplicates for the real thing. See the attached photos for an example! For the price, the value of the museum is beyond compare, especially if you have even a passing interest in Roman Empire history. Big thanks to Bastien R. , an enthusiastic and helpful guide we met along the way, who gave us details on the functioning of an AR mirror and much more!

The museum includes a large collection of artifacts from the time of the Gauls and the Roman period, up until the medieval times. The price of the ticket is 9€ and 12€ if you wish to have an audio guide. However, there is information in English on all the displays and the museum staff were very knowledgeable and eager to answer any questions. We were lucky as there was also a temporary display of contemporary arts where you could admire Roman statues with a modern twist! Do not forget to visit the gardens and the viewpoint! The restaurant with views of the amphitheater seemed really nice! Overall, we spent nearly 3 hours, so it is a must if you are a history buff!

Apparently set up primarily for school children, the museum has few exhibits but lots of technology and tricks to entertain. It is built upon the site of Nimes' Roman walls which are artfully indicated by outlines and partial reconstructions, because they were demolished (naturally). The gorgeous amphitheatre can be seen clearly in the plaza outside, which is the best exhibit one could wish.

This is a really good museum if you like aesthetics and history and has some amazing pieces. However, on a family trip it felt very pretentious. Very little to engage little ones besides a few token tables and lots of sniffy staff hovering to make sure you dont touch anything. When buying tickets the receptionist was very unfriendly and there was no where to store our coats on a wet day. In addition if you dont buy the audio guide there is very little sinage to tell you what things are. Not one to inspire the next generation and a completely different experience to the pont du garde museum that was built with kids in mind.

The Pradier fountain is a marble fountain on the Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle in Nimes, inaugurated in 1850. It was created by the architect Charles Questel and the sculptor James Pradier and it is registered as a historical monument by decree on November 16, 1988. The fountains main figure is a young woman standing in the middle which represents the city of Nîmes. It bears as its crown the emblematic Roman monuments of the city: the Arena and the colonnade of the Maison Carree (Roman Temple). The main statue is surrounded by four seated statues and basins that collect water. These four figures, two men and two women, represent four major rivers in the region: the Fontaine de Nîmes, the mother source of the Roman colony, the Gardon, the Fountain of Eure and the Rhône. Each of these representations is identified by its Latin name, engraved on its base: Nemausa, Vardo, Ura and Rhodano.

I'm probably not well qualified to judge this gallery, as I'm not a big fan of contemporary art, however I am always open to giving it a try. In my opinion, such as it is, this was particularly poor. Very few exhibits, many of them completely missed me, in that I could see little artistic quality in them. I think I enjoyed about 5% of the exhibits. I was accompanied by 2 other people, both of whom had a wider appreciation of art than myself, and they also found it particularly poor. Frankly, a waste of €8.

A nice cultural center for Nimes, where you go from the library to the classrooms where you can set up exhibitions such as those of modern art. The architecture is new and majestic as a whole and definitely makes it quite a tourist attraction. Fabulous show celebrating their 30 Years. They do a great job presenting contemporary art chronologically. The information placards explain the emergence of contemporary philosophies and their transition in form over the las 5 decades. I recommend seeing this in conjunction with the Museum Romanité (Musée de la Romanité). Their current contemporary exhibit binds the relationship between the two museums. Ignore negative reviews and come to appreciate this excellent exhibit.

We just drove into Nimes without a plan other than to see the arena. We happened to walk past this office and decided to go in. I'm very glad we did! The greeting was very friendly, we got lots of useful information - including a suggestion to ride the tram that takes you around town. Which gave us a great sense of the place and what else we wanted to see. We ended up spending most of the day in Nimes. Thanks for your kindness! The city itself . . . captivating. We loved the simple, elegant Christmas decorations. Much different than the garish way we do it in NYC. The Arena is simple awe-inspiring. And what a credit to the city for keeping it in use! We found the people, shops, parks all to be wonderful. Traffic is a little tight, but there's ample parking at a very reasonable rate.

The English translation: "Water Castle". Although it was known from the texts, it is a rare vestige of this type. Its function was to distribute water to the city. This water was supplied by a 50 km long aqueduct built in the middle of the 1st century A.D. (Augustan period). In times of drought, it guaranteed the security of the water supply and facilitated the evacuation of the city's wastewater. It is known to have been filled in during the construction of the citadel in 1688 and was not rediscovered until 1844 by a private individual who immediately set about uncovering it. There is no entrance fee, you can see it from the sidewalk.

The place itself isn't much but if you are a bit of a Roman nerd then you would appreciate how cool this place is. This is where the water entered the city after traveling for almost 100km via aqueducts including the pont du garde. This building distributed the water via different pipes with different uses, like drinking water and sewage water. The engineering behind it requires its own wikipedia page

The French collection has some wonderful portraits that let you see into the soul of the subject Also, there is a lovely painting of Alexander the Great meeting the very eccentric Greek philosopher Diogenes while he lived in a barrel with his clock, his stick and his bread bag. Additionally, there is a particularly engimatic painting of Ulysseus' "encounter" with a sword waving Circe on the island of Aiaia. And if, like me, you ever wondered exactly how the Immaculate Conception occurred, there is a painting with a depiction.

Step outside the old town and you will find this little gem. Perhaps it is overshadowed by the Museum Romanite and that's why it was so quiet. However, the fact that it is not busy with tourists adds to its appeal. The entrance to the building is gorgeous, decorated with beautiful sculptures. The interior with its grand staircase does not disappoint either. The exhibition includes mosaics, sculptures and paintings from different artists and periods. The entrance fee costs only 5€, so there is no excuse not to visit.

Very small, with very little of real interest inside. There is a room filled with cultural items from across Africa and Australia but barely anything is labeled or the few labels that are there are often illegible or hidden. Many exhibits obscure other items of interest by blocking your view. It felt less like a museum and more like a brocante. Some of the taxidermists animals are so poorly finished they're laughable, potentially entertaining enough to warrant a visit. It's hard to recommend that you will find anything worthy of your time here or your money. Overpriced for what is actually on display and the quality of the exhibitions are severely lacking. Keep your money for other attractions.

Very interesting museum for a 5 euro entrance fee. The personnel were very kind and helpful. Some of the floors of the building were as amazing as the displays. The origin of Denim has its own room to show how it originated in Nimes and has evolved. (De Nimes = Denim). It's on two floors and as I recall there is no lift which is unfortunate for many people but I suppose it's good to know that before you begin your visit.

The building is well maintained BUT the museum is pretty dissapointing considering the impressive history of Nimes. Such a shame!
