The history that involves this amazing architecture is fabulous. You can see the old testament and the new one carved on the walls of the entrance of the church. A really beautiful place and full of history. Hire a tour guide so you can learn more about it.

Spectacular building! Very unique. Much of the attraction can be seen from the outside but I think the €5 entrance ticket is worth it as the altar, chapels and organ inside are beautiful. Very beautiful Duomo / cathedral steeped in history and art. Can see the alabaster windows and stained glass inside. Floor is not the original mosaic like in Siena. The facade is gorgeous for those who don't want to pay the 5€ fee. But fee also included inside art painting and sculptures, tombs underground and Orvieto tunnels tour. Light a candle.

Absolutely beautiful cathedral in the heart of Orvieto. A must visit when in Orvieto. But be respectful. Shorts and dresses must be to your knees and shoulders must be covered to be admitted. Hats for men AND women are to be removed before entering.

The cathedral flagstone was laid on 13 November 1290 but work (reconstruction, redesign) continued into the 20th century. In fact, the beautiful bronze doors were added in 1970. The side walls, alternating layers of local white travertine and blue-grey basalt stone are a stark, but beautiful contrast to the glittering gold-accented front facade. Unfortunately, we could not enter the church owing to a funeral. A large rose window and golden mosaics, and a wealth of sculpture festoon the front. The cathedral has five bells, dating back to the Renaissance.

THE BIGGEST CHURCH I'VE EVER SEEN ATOP A MOUNTAIN!!!!! Orvieto was really something to see the town is atop a mountain they have a cable lift up mountain and on top you can take a ride on a trolley that takes you to different parts of Orvieto. Each hamlet has its own flavor, even a mid evil section ! But when you come to this church, it's mind-blowing! Beautiful! We took the trenetia train from Rome for about an hour twenty minutes. Great place to get out of Rome for a day. You will love it! Just be aware of the train schedule tricky. The trolley is 9 euro and lift two and half euro well worth it.

Nestled in a quaint little hill town, this duomo is spectacular. What is the difference between a cathedral and a Duomo? They are in fact one and the same! Duomo is an Italian word for cathedral, which is a Catholic church where the bishop resides. I would not like to live in a world without cathedrals. I need their beauty and grandeur. I need their imperious silence. I need it against the witless bellowing of the barracks yard and the witty chatter of the yes-men. What an unexpected stop. The well is located just out of the city center. Be prepared to walk. The stairs steps down make for sone quick pictures of the view to the well. The climb up is something different- prepare to stop and let those legs rest. You can will work up s sweat.

Something different and fun to do on your visit to Orvieto. Wouldn’t miss it if you are already in the city to see the duomo. Neat and well preserved, you start at the top of the well, walk down, and then walk back up. Roughly 250 steps each way. If you are claustrophobic, scared of heights, or not able to walk up that number of steps alse keeping in mind it can be damp and you should be careful of your footing, it may not be for you, but there are still beautiful views. Tickets to go in the well are €5. They did seem to keep good moderation of the number of people inside at once so it did not get too crowded, great for both heat and covid reasons.

Great attraction in the city of Orvieto, it's a deep well with round stairs (people said around 500 steps each way lol) but it's so interesting! The ticket is 5€, reduced to 3.50 for groups of 6 or over. In my opinion is worth the visit :)

Nice concept of historical design, the design and the story will amuse you. One of the stories i heard is that there is two ways of the stairs because one is the way up and the other is to go down they made it like this so that the donkeys won't get on eachothers way.

Wow! Don’t miss it! The well is a fascinating piece of architecture. Before you enter, know that it is one way down, down, down, down, down…to the very bottom before you can go back up in the second staircase that pairs the descent - it’s amazing! Worth a visit if you don’t mind a lot of stairs, heights (yes, heights) and dark passages (Disclaimer: my claustrophobia clicked in and I only made it partway down before heading up the downwards staircase against the flow of visitors and pushing myself out the one way entry. Couldn’t do it but I still think the place is awesome).

Unique in its shape and therefore unmissable, this well where once the mules descended using one of the two spiral staircases invented by Antonio da Sangallo to fill the bags of water and went up again using the other one in a one-way circuit. Its construction began in 1527 and lasted 10 years. Reaching the water descending the 248 steps can be a bit tiring but it is also possible to take a look only at the upper part where there is more light and go back without reaching it. Entry costscosts €5 but for €25 it is also possible to buy the cumulative ticket "ORVIETO CARTA UNICA" which also allows you to enter the Cathedral, "Orvieto Underground", Necropolis of Crocifisso del Tufo, Torre del Moro, "Pozzo della Cava", National Archaeological Museum, Etruscan Museum of Faina, "MODO Museum". Near the well the remains of the Etruscan temple of Belvedere. Nice landscape from the terrace.

We visited the Well of St. Patrick. It cost 5 euro so it doesn’t break the bank. The construction is very interesting - one way down, cross the bridge and another way back up. Back in the day they had donkeys pull a cart down, fill the cart with water and the donkey would pull the cart back up. Today you walk down & back up. 247 steps down and 249 steps back to the top. About half way back up, you start wishing for that donkey cart to come along. You only need to visit the well once in a life time.

A large well with two easy staircases, one to go down and another to go up. A perfect one way system. When I say easy, I mean the height of the steps isn't great but be aware that there are a lot of them, 248 I recall.

A public tour of a few tunnels beneath Orvieto. Knowledgeable tour guide, need to be pretty mobile to access the tunnels. The one drawback was they limit the tour to 2 tunnel complexes on the outskirts of town. While the entire city has tunnels breath it, you can only access these two from the tour.

Senior rate 6€, about 1 hr in duration. The guide brought the group of about 16 to two caves and explained the purpose and many details of the history. The brochures and website didn’t seem to agree on when the English language tours were, so I’d recommend just visiting when the ticket office opens (Duomo square) and ask, then choose your tour time and if it’s later in the day, take the city bus to the Fortress or walk! Also, regarding accessibility, one of the caves was relatively easy to navigate, only 5 steps or so. The other cave included very steep steps- probably not accessible for someone with a cane or mobility issues.

Very interesting tour. We bought tickets after we arrived in Orvieto for the day and waiting about 30 minutes for our English-speaking tour to begin. We had around 25 people in our tour group so that wasn’t too bad. The tour itself took about an hour and was very informative about the city and the underground that had been built.

This is worth every penny of the 5€ to enter. It is amazing what we as humanity have build centuries ago. This is one of those places. You enter and decend a long old stone stare well while seeing people go up, you each have your own walk way as the design is perfect. It is just a thing you have to see once in your life! Toss a penny in the well for good luck.

We added this to our other Orvietto underground tours,they are all different and we enjoyed this one very much.It is self guided which suits us and there were plenty of information points explaining the history ect along the way (in english) Only 2.50 Euro reduced entry (65+) which is very reasonable There were stairs but nothing strenuous .The gift shop at the end sells lovely hand made pottery and other items.Good to add to your Orvietto experience.

It gives you a real sense of the History of Orveito. We went in June and there was no line and the tour of the place took about 30 minutes.

Really fun and interesting little cave museum. We had the pleasure of being the only two people there, and it is really the perfect size, where every area is super interesting but isn't overwhelming and you can literally look at everything there. There is also a small gift shop attached where they sell pottery made across the street, including replicas of the pieces discovered when the caves were found. I'm not much of a gift shop person, but really liked this to grab a memento of the experience, especially knowing where all the ceramics were made.

A public tour of a few tunnels beneath Orvieto. Knowledgeable tour guide, need to be pretty mobile to access the tunnels. The one drawback was they limit the tour to 2 tunnel complexes on the outskirts of town. While the entire city has tunnels breath it, you can only access these two from the tour.

Senior rate 6€, about 1 hr in duration. The guide brought the group of about 16 to two caves and explained the purpose and many details of the history. The brochures and website didn’t seem to agree on when the English language tours were, so I’d recommend just visiting when the ticket office opens (Duomo square) and ask, then choose your tour time and if it’s later in the day, take the city bus to the Fortress or walk! Also, regarding accessibility, one of the caves was relatively easy to navigate, only 5 steps or so. The other cave included very steep steps- probably not accessible for someone with a cane or mobility issues.

It looks very simple from outside, but has a nice view around the city. You can see many beautiful roofs of the buildings around, pretty much the whole Orvieto. Just be careful that the bell might ring any second. It might scare quite a bit as it is just a couple of meters away. Price is 3.8 eur.

The cathedral flagstone was laid on 13 November 1290 but work (reconstruction, redesign) continued into the 20th century. In fact, the beautiful bronze doors were added in 1970. The side walls, alternating layers of local white travertine and blue-grey basalt stone are a stark, but beautiful contrast to the glittering gold-accented front facade. Unfortunately, we could not enter the church owing to a funeral. A large rose window and golden mosaics, and a wealth of sculpture festoon the front. The cathedral has five bells, dating back to the Renaissance.

Orvieto was really something to see the town is atop a mountain they have a cable lift up mountain and on top you can take a ride on a trolley that takes you to different parts of Orvieto. Each hamlet has its own flavor, even a mid evil section ! But when you come to this church, it's mind-blowing! Beautiful! We took the trenetia train from Rome for about an hour twenty minutes. Great place to get out of Rome for a day. You will love it! Just be aware of the train schedule tricky. The trolley is 9 euro and lift two and half euro well worth it.

My boyfriend and I had an amazing tour, tasting and cooking class led by Angelica - and lucky for us, it was just the three of us thanks to the quieter off-season! The cooking class was fantastic, we learned how to make lummechelle, a tagliatelle, polpettine and wine cookies. Then we had the pleasure of enjoying them alongside the vineyard’s fabulous selection of wines. A perfect day and experience thanks to Angelica (and special shout-out to Mena, the adorable black lab who helped oversee our tour and day!). Skip the ridiculous Airbnb experiences and book directly with this vineyard, you won’t regret it. My wife and I led two different tour groups to the winery for tours and cooking classes. I wholeheartedly recommend this experience. Our tour guide Pablo was sincerely charming and informative. Our Chef instructor Iliana was clearly was experienced while being patient and cheerful. Her English skills are limited, but that doesn't impact the course at all, as Pablo is always nearby to translate or relay instructions. In the cooking class you will prepare and eat a lovely selection of local foods, and get the recipes so you can make them at home, too! Be aware that the drive is a little daunting, just follow your instructions or GPS and you'll be at the gate with no problems. I found this place, looking for an open winery in Orvieto area, at this time of the year. I guess it was my lucky day. Another of the sites included with the Orvieto Carta Unica. A collection of Etruscan artifacts began by Count Faina has become a formal museum. A large collection of coins is displayed in several galleries, as are earthenware items. The Civic Museum of Orvieto is also housed here on the ground floor. Much of the building has accessibility elements for wheeled travel (walker, stroller, wheelchair) - an elevator and ramps. A quiet, peaceful visit was our experience. A strange experience, a museum seemingly more intent on telling you about its founders than about the history or context of its exhibits. We had previously visited the museum and tombs at Cerveteri (on the coast between Orvieto and Rome) where we enjoyed the 3D displays and audio explanations, so were surprised at the lack of explanation here. In fact you get more insight into 19th century Italian life than 6th century Etruscans - the display boards say that the 19th century desire to collect and display ancient artefacts ran up against resistance from those who saw this as an attack on personal property and privacy; and that collectors were sometimes motivated by a desire to escape the uncertainties and challenges of modern life by burying themselves in the past!
