There is an exhibit hallway up in the building, you can visit it on your way up to the top of the bell tower. Great view from the top but be careful not to be up there when the bell rings. If you have the Volterra city pass you can visit the town hall, the art museum, the Roman theater, and the Acropoli Etrusca/Roman cistern up in the park with the same ticket.

The Piazza dei Priori and the palazzo is really worth a visit. We went early in the morning and had a good time with the whole family. Not to forget the nice arts marekt on the piazza dei priori where the kids could do a workshop with alabaster stone.

Spent about 90 minutes here last weekend and were blown away by the history and yet, the current use of the palazzo. The highlight of our trip was being treated to a very personal and personable guide/insight from Paolo (working there) who went more then the extra mile for us. Paolo, grazie per tutto. Beautifull townhall, if you are lucky and there is no ceremony, you cab have a look inside. Upstairs you need to pay 3 euros to climb the tower, the view is nice.

It costs money if you want to go in, but you can see it clearly for free if you walk up to the wiewing spot, I recommend bringing binoculars, you will get good use of them while exploring the town, it has a lot of amazing view spots.

The star rating above is my own experience. I'm also not sure how to rate it being I didn't go in. In general I appreciate it in it's age and design. But there's so much to see in Italy. I'm saving my funds for other things. So, I didn't feel the need to pay for when I'm not a historian, architect or archeologist. I appreciate seeing these things, but not enough to understand what I'm looking at. You do have to pay €10 for each adult to go into the area. €8 over 65 and kids are reduced as well. It would've been €20 to walk around in there. Hope this helps and makes sense.

An ancient Roman theater ....so beautiful

An absolute gem! Voltara is Rich with history, beautiful views, and of course delicious food. This was a perfect day trip with my family. Plenty of scenery for taking pictures or letting time slow down. Step into history at every shop if you want to get any gifts, leather, cheese, meat, and of course wine that can be shipped anywhere. It is a beautiful drive and high probability for a romantic day.

Beautifully preserved Roman Amphitheatre in the beautiful town of Volterra. You can view it from above for free or pay €5 to walk down nearer to the site. We paid to walk down and enjoyed seeing it up close. It also had some plaques with information on them.

10€ per person for a slightly better view..wow.. doesn’t make sense to pay. You can see it perfectly fine from above or the street which costs nothing. For the back story just ask Siri or something. Pure tourist tax/ trap. Do not recommend.

Pretty amazing place when you consider it's a couple of thousand years old. I can't help feel like they could make more of it with some information for tourists. We ended up reading about it on our phones following a Google search.

Walking around, you can feel the weight of history. Imagine the battles fought at the oldest arch. Imagine the life and death struggles that occured. The history of the Teatro Romano, and the way it was discovered and unearthed is a great story for any age.

What's disappointing is the lack of organization and information: they didn't have books or even brochures, so I asked for the wifi but they don't have that either despite having remodeled the place a few months ago. There’s no doubt that they have an incredible Etruscan collection, particularly of exquisitely carved funeral urns (if that’s your thing). Unfortunately this museum suffers from a problem endemic to most Italian museums: They don’t present their collection in a compelling way. There’s little context provided and a complete lack of a narrative, so unless you’re already an Etruscan expert you’re left a bit befuddled and overwhelmed. I wish they were more selective in the objects they display and used them to tell a story, so while I’m certainly impressed by the artistic talent of Volterra’s ancient inhabitants I left feeling I knew as little about them as when I entered. TBH I’m not sure if it’s really worth the 10€ ticket price unless you have time and money to burn or are already an Etruscan expert

It is 2 floors and can be seen approximately in 1-2 hours. It is really amazing to see how advanced the Etruscan people who are considered as the ancestors of Romans by some. I would strongly advice to see if you have time. Do not forget to see Acropolis on the way 🙂

Art and funeral stuff from the etruscan era. Mostly from and around Volerra. Very intriguing stuff. Perhaps more sarcophagusi than was necessary but still worth the wait. Some greek art and its impact on the local scene back then as well as a bit of Roman interaction. Artifacts go all the way to the Neolithic. Also a few fossils.

A definite place to visit if you are into culture and history.

I'm sure this museum is the world's best for an Etruscan history enthusiast. Lots of artifacts that are incredibly old and fairly well preserved for the circumstances. As a curious but uninformed tourist, there was perhaps too much of similar items to look at for the amount of information available. Wonder if there are even any tombs left in the necropolis or if literally every fragment is here.

My wife and I enjoyed visiting the cathedral. Current cost is 7EUR/person and includes a great audio guide with approximately 15 stations. Each station on the audio guide provides about two minutes of information - total audio guide is 34 minutes long. The audio guide is outstanding - you must download it to your smart phone after scanning a QR code given to you after purchasing a ticket. The audio guide is as good, if not better, than several walking tour guides we have taken for substantially more cost. The ticket to cathedral offers each person a 2EUR discount to visit Palazzo Viti (5EUR instead of 7EUR). The cathedral is not a component of the Volterra Card. Again, great audio guide that brings to life the many great paintings and sculptures within the cathedral.

Not worth going inside at a high price of 16 euro per adult. I would suggest walking past it and going to the edge of the city where you can get some amazing views of the areas surrounding Volterra and it will cost you nothing. It was basically a one hour refuge when it started to rain during our visit to the wonderful town of Volterra. For just €5 it proved a surprisingly interesting visit. A great collection of art and porcelain, and in every room there are some amazing things to discover. Certainly worth a visit!

An amazing Pallazzo, wonderful collectors home. There was a Senor Viti who travelled the world, having adventures and gathering and collecting, mainly from the east. He brought treasures back to his palace and it has recently been opened to the public by his descendants. It really is the best I have seen as the rooms are beautifully decorated and filled with interesting collectors items, while remaining a home. Everyone in Tuscany should look at going to it. It is also a display of the carvings done of alabaster, it was his livelihood so he kept the best.

This is a worthwhile visit if you’re in Volterra - you get to travel back in time and see what wealth and success represents around the year 1500. Visitors should note that you only get to see one floor of the Palace as the family still uses the property. The patriarch of the house recently passed away a couple of months ago, which is a huge loss as he used to provide an extra touch to the tour. There are now written guides in multiple languages in his place. Just skip the free wine tasting in the cellar afterwards - I had one of my worst experiences in Italy there. You don’t need language to be polite and nice.

Nice quiet public park, hidden away at the top of the town. A little overgrown but clean enough and a welcome break from the bustle of the main tourist parts of the town. Opportunity to visit the ruins for a small fee. Trees in the area hide the best views of the countryside below but plenty of shady places to sit and relax after the walk up there. Beware that the main ascent from the town is quiet steep (but do-able).

Fascinating piece of Roman history. It won't take more than thirty minutes to admire the cistern and temples. You could rush and do it in a few minutes if you needed to. But what wonderful preserved pierces of history. Worth the €5 or so each. If you are in the area it's a must do.

Quite frankly, it's not as impressive as advertised. Yes, it's interesting to see the archeological site and the underground bits, but the information signs are so worn off you can barely see what all the buildings are, which is a bummer.
