Alnwick Castle is a beautiful place to visit. It has many attractions such as the magnificent state rooms, Fusiliers Museum, attractive grounds, the stable wing where demonstrations take place of swords and chain mail plus there us a huge dressing up wardrobe. Near the stables is Dragon Quest, escape from the sleeping dragon. Fun for children of all ages and adults. The room guides are very knowledgeable. They have a Professor on hand to teach broomstick training which adults and children do. It was great fun. There are two free guided walks at different times during the day of the grounds and a film and TV walk showing where films such as Harry Potter and Tobin Hood Prince of Thieves was filmed. There is a lovrly cafe and two sets of toilets within the castle. The castle is free for members of Historic Houses but otherwise payable. The beautiful gardens full of fountains are a separate attraction with separate charges. I visited the castle and gardens over two days there was so much to see and do. The Castle car park is opposite and has a parable charge as you enter.

The opulent State Rooms, stunning art collection, and well-preserved medieval architecture were awe-inspiring. The highlight was undoubtedly the Alnwick Garden, a mesmerizing blend of beauty and tranquility. A captivating destination for history lovers and garden enthusiasts alike. A true gem in Northumberland!

This was a hard one for me. The castle is beautiful and well maintained. However I love to go everywhere and see all of the castle. I do not care much for modern parts of castles. I view them from a medieval perspective. This one has many other things happening. The Harry Potter stuff is nice for those that are into that. There is also a nice children's area.

Spent the morning walking around the castle. Costs £20 per adult. So average price for a stately home. But it is far from average. Take the Walk around the ground tour. It lasts about 45 minutes, and you get so much information about the Percy family and the history of the castle. Then, visit the state rooms again. It's great to see all the family history. Finally, we stopped for a cup of tea and a scone and jam. All in all a great few hours

The most magical, beautiful and scenic castle I have ever seen! It was like visiting Hogwarts. Staff were friendly and approachable. They took photos for me as I was visiting solo. Staff were helpful informing me where Harry Potter scenes were filmed. You learn how to fly on a broom and how to make it fly saying "up, up, up". You would need a good 3 hours if not more to view. So much for children to do. Dragon lair was so scary but amazing. There was a play on for the children. Lots of activities for children to play. Toilets on site. Cafe on site. Gift shop on site.

What a beautiful castle. You can explore the entire grounds so make sure you have some decent time to do so. Photography is prohibited inside the castle rooms. Lots of shopping and dining options right outside the castle.

The castle exterior is just beautiful, it’s not a surprise that movies scenes are shot in their surroundings. In addition, on the day of my visit, they also staged different activities like - medieval music, falcon exhibitions, so on - utterly fascinating. The interiors are also worth a visit, there is actually quite a lot to see.

Fabulous place to visit, we were fortunate that we managed to get in on the last day before the castle closed for the season. Had a fabulous time wandering around the castle, plenty of information around the rooms and loads of volunteers who were more than happy to share their knowledge with you. Recommended place to visit.

Enchanted. Glorious day makes for an experience. The foundation display and the planting and structure of the gardens were lovely. The castle and its setting were beautiful. Not able to take photos inside the castle but the state rooms are worth seeing.

Beautiful historic place to visit for all ages. There was plenty to see and lots of activities aimed around children with adults to join in too. The living area inside was outstanding and well worth the visit.

Interesting castle with lots to see and do. Clearly the Harry Potter theme is prevalent with activities such as broomstick training. The children enjoyed the dragon quest. The staff were doing their best to entertain despite the heavy rain! The castle was busy when we visited, but it's large enough that aside from the state rooms (which was very crowded in places), it didn't feel too busy. Admission isn't cheap (£19.50 per adult or £10.25 per child if booked online), but this allows you to visit for free for up to a year. There is a cafe there and a large hall with tables where you can eat (even your own food) in the dry if it's raining. The cafe served good coffee! There are lots of free car parks very close by (avoid car park A which requires tokens - instead aim for B or C). All in all, a fun day out.

An excellent family day out. Good value for what you got. Beautiful grounds. Very good birds of prey display. Dragon quest very fun and surprising. Clay making for kids free and good.

We went there on Easter Saturday 2024, the road to the Car Park was chockers in both directions, had a 15 minute wait, due to the lack of adequate traffic management at the entrance to the car park, this may have been a testament to the popularity of the venue. Payment to the Car Park is cashless only. The castle itself is spectacular, the staterooms are filled with interesting displays. There are plenty of things to see and do for younger visitors as the castle fully exploits its Harry Potter connections. This is a spectacular venue, with good clean well maintained toilets, plenty of stuff to keep the kids busy, plenty of food and drink outlets. This is a great place to visit, so if you are in the area please give it a go.

We brought our kids and had a great time. Make sure to navigate to the Castle and Garden Car Park—they have RV and bus parking also. The broom lessons and dragon quest are free with admission and very fun for the kids. The archery is paid but was fun and very well run.

Wow! Incredible tour from Eric on the film tour. The castle itself is beautiful and where the Duke lives is stunning and we loved the personal touches of the photos! We would love to come back if we lived local

43yrs old and first time I've been inside the castle. £20 each but that gives you an annual pass. Highly recommended, there's plenty to see. The castle has been very well maintained, the state rooms are very impressive. There's plenty going on outside to see and join in with especially for the kids.

Beautiful castle with parking next to it which isn't that expensive but due to having dogs with us we have found parking on same road just bit further for free on side of the road. We were able to walk across river from castle on lovely walk which leads to castle. Again not long walk with fantastic views of castle and grounds.

This is the world's 2nd largest inhabited castle in the world, after Windsor. It's a true fortified castle built for defense and war. Although this castle has never been breached, it has seen its share of wars. Most of the original castle has been upgraded and enhanced over its existence by its owner of 700 years. It is a beautiful and operational home to the Percy family.

Excellent day at Alnwick Castle. Great to visit a castle and home that has been in the same family for 700 years. And what fabulous history that includes as the family worked carefully and diplomatically through English historical events without losing their castle, a great feat indeed when many others were lost along the way. Fun watching the Harry Potter broomstick training and we enjoyed the dragon walk. We visited mid week term time but looking at some of the features I suspect this is fabulous when kids are around and enjoying the various activities. Very nice lunch too. Car parking is good value but beware poor signage approaching from inland, we got lost in Alnwick , ace signage from the a1.

We had a great day here with our two grandchildren. The weather was great which obviously helped but a full programme of activities made it a fabulous day. We thought that places on the broomstick training were limited but that wasn’t the case at all. The two ladies leading the training were very good. Funny, witty and lively made this a great start to the day. Soap making,dragon quest and two excellent Tom Fool shows made this a great day out.

This is a lovely castle but very much commercialised for families with young children. Lovely activities such as dressing up in period costumes, dragon quests, making a clay tile and broomstick flying. However when visiting without children it does not have as much of an appeal. Entry fee is also quite a bit more than neighbouring castles. Not allowing photos to be taken inside the castle is also a disappointment. We found there were areas inside closed which had not been advertised when booking. Not somewhere we would hurry back to unfortunately.

Beautiful castle and grounds, the craftsmanship of the ceilings and rooms is awesome, it's a bit expensive but worth seeing, the weather was too bad so we didn't do the gardens, these are priced separately so the costs can mount up.

Fabulous day at the castle. So much to see and do. Various tours or activities as well. Enjoyed watching people learning how to fly their broomsticks although didn't try it myself. Nice cafe and restaurant and all of the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend buying ticket on-line as it is then valid for 12 months. We'll be back.

Walking into this castle for the first time was like stepping into a real-life Hogwarts, and it completely blew my mind. The place was absolutely stunning, with towering turrets that made me feel like I was in a fairy tale. The whole scene, with its medieval charm, was like being in a Harry Potter movie. The gardens around the castle were so beautiful, filled with flowers and greenery that added to the magical atmosphere. Inside, as I explored the halls with suits of armor and ancient tapestries, I couldn't help but imagine the kind of adventures that could have taken place there. The views from the top of the towers were breathtaking, and every nook and cranny seemed to hold a piece of history. This experience has definitely set the bar high for any future castle visits—I never knew a place could feel so enchanting and transport me to a world of wonder.

Great place to visit with kids, the dragon quest dungeon is very pol with a mirror maze. The boar sandwiches are the best !

Such an amazing castle to visit. It isn't just beautiful but there is SO much to do there (medieval soap making, broomstick ride classes, archery, medieval games,etc). We went with our little one and spent a whole day there without a dull moment. Highly recommended for families in particular.

This is a magnificent castle, in perfect condition still occupied by the owning family, who are the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. The internet says it’s the second largest occupied in the UK after Windsor Castle. There were lots of activities taking place when I was there including broomstick lessons, (some Harry Potter was filmed there) and some medieval kids craft and dress up. The state rooms are the most opulent I have seen, absolutely stunning, and I’ve visited Windsor castle. There’s lots of exhibitions connecting the Duke with the royal family and coronations. I’ve only given this 4 stars because, compared so other castles I’ve visited a lot remains private as it’s still occupied, so I felt I didn’t see that much of the castle for the entry price, which is the highest I think I’ve paid. I was also disappointed that there is no photography in the state rooms, and very little information around the castle about its history, which is one of the things I enjoy the most in a visit. Overall a memorable visit and stunning place, just wish I could have seen and learnt more!

Very nice walk at the peak of spring. Most of the apple blossom had fallen but had a calming walk around leading to the top garden. Very good wheel chair access and tidy. Gardeners answered any question's. Poison garden was extremely interesting and the scale of the fountain took me by surprise as this was my first visit.

Wow i did think over £17 per adult to look at a garden was steep but man it was worth every penny (kids go free) we spent all day here! The poison garden was fantastic. Cocktail van fabulous. Just such a stunning garden felt like i was in a fairy tale!

Lovely day out for three generations for my mum's birthday. Bit of a rainy day but didn't dampen our spirits. Cafe food was really tasty, queues were a bit long and prices varied depending in what you wanted. Plenty of seating options. Will have to return to see the Cherry Blossoms in bloom.

This was such a delightful day. The kids just loved every minute. Beautiful setting and super clean and tidy. So much for the kids to do and the staff were all amazing.

I was here with my family on holiday, even tho it was raining it was fantastic all the same. The scenery and atmosphere even on a day where it is just raining is outstanding. The poison garden was fantastic and the guide was amazing and funny and made the experience enjoyable. And the water features and bamboo maze is a must see as well. The cafe is brilliant for a quick hot drink stop. All in all great place to go

One of the best places you can visit in the country let alone the world. First day was cancelled due to high winds, we are talking enough to knock you over. Duty manager said we can come back the next and it was a real pleasure to finally explore the Alnwick gardens in piece and at my own pace. They was a lot more I hadn’t really thought of and each section was just as wonderful as the last section. I highly recommend it for anyone to come and visit at least once

The gardens are fantastic. Obviously not as colourful as earlier in the year but still beautiful. We did the guided tour of the Poison Garden which was excellent - informative and funny and also had a cream tea in the cafe which was delicious. Well worth the fee.

A wonderful place to visit any time of the year. Magnificent gardens and water features. The rose garden and the poison gardens are exceptional. Good food, especially in the Treehouse restaurant. Shop is great. Excellent place for kids and good parking. Brilliant all round...

A fantastic family day out when the sun is shining 😀. A lovely place to be, so we'll out together and designed. We paid a one-off payment of £33per adult that covers us unlimited access over 12 months. We chose this one, as it includes free carpark, 10% off in the cafe/shop, and no need to book in advance before visiting. A huge bonus is that children are free, and they can spend all day running and playing being children. It is all very clean and tidy, with plenty of things to keep you fed and watered along with being fully entertained.

Nice morning out exploring the gardens and many fountains with the family. Enough to keep little ones entertained for a few hours - who doesn't like getting a soaking by a fountain? It is a little pricey if you're just heading for the gardens only, and if bringing the little ones worth doubling up with Lilidorei. Crazy Golf is a great distraction for little (and big) feet - our boys loved it.

Absolutely incredible garden. Completely symmetrical, I was blown away. Staff are extremely friendly and the poisonous garden is definitely worth a visit. Plenty of places to sit and get away from the world in peace for a while. The fountains are amazing. I would certainly make a special journey to visit the garden. The cafe is available on site with toilets and plenty of seating. Parking outside the garden is £3.50 all day and you must pay for entrance, you save money booking online.

Really spooky! 100 deadly and intoxicating plants to discover. A tour guide takes you on a 30 minute long journey with a group. Lots of dangerous stuff to see and cool stories from the guide. There's also a wee tunnel covered in ivy on the way out. The castle is just next door and was featured in the Harry Potter movies as Hogwarts. There's archery at the castle. And a haunted burger van in the gardens.

Alnwick Gardens is without doubt the best and most diverse gardens that our family have visited. There is genuinely something for every age group and interest. The kids loved the maze, treasure hunt, fountains and swings in the blossom tree orchard. I thought the tour of the Poison Garden was incredibly interesting, made by the engaging and funny guide. There is a massive cafe with plenty of sheltered seating, which was useful on a rainy day. The shop is also really big and has a great selection of products. We can’t wait to go back - five stars!

Wow! A beautiful wander through well thought out areas, with lots of labels identifying the plants (often lacking at other gardens). So much to see and do for all ages. I was fortunate enough to hire a mobility scooter (free) so even though I have intermittent mobility issues I could access all areas. The café is great, as is the huge covered patio area. We were lucky that the ducks and ducklings were wandering around the tables while we had lunch!

Fantastic garden where accessibility is well catered for. Ample disabled parking, and all paths are wheelchair/scooter friendly. The walk through the cherry trees is very clever, especially with all the swings- can only imagine how pretty that is when in full blossom. The only bit that’s not fully accessible by wheelchair is the steps up and round the fountain, can get so far as there are ramps to get you to the middle section where you can see the water jumping over the oath. Bamboo maze was fun and very clever. Lots of benches so you can sit and admire the surroundings. Food was lovely. Really enjoyable day out.

As always the gardens are a lovely experience and day trip for anyone. The car park is only £3 for the full day which is great if you also want to venture into the town which is only a stones throw away. The price of admission is ok, but I never understand why they charge you an extra couple of quid for gift aid, and yet they claim the 20% VAT on the tickets, seems like a right con to me. Plus, they don’t actually ask you if you want the tickets without the gift aid. They simply assume, which I felt quite insulted by. That gripe aside, the gardens are lovely. The walk around can take you around an hour or so. There’s loads of open spaces to have a picnic and enjoy the lazy sunshine. The gardens are amazingly put together and the water features are enjoyed mostly by kids getting soaked wet. In all, a great hour spent wandering around. But the tickets could be a bit cheaper, and the staff could give you the option of giving gift aid as opposed to simply assuming.

This is a great place for all ages. The grounds are beautifully maintained and the water fountain display is amazing. The cafe does nice food and drinks which are reasonably priced and everywhere was clean. The poison garden tour is definitely worth doing and it's included in the entrance price. Highly recommended 5*

Went with 2 of the grandkids for the Xmas light show, great evening, weather was dry, my first visit to the gardens and I will definitely be back. Very impressed indeed. Advance booking recommended for the event.

Beautiful gardens, a must if you are in the area. Kids will love arts and crafts activities, playing with water and learning about plants. The poison garden is very interesting, a lot to learn; there usually is a cue (tours every 30 min) and places fill up quickly (around 20-25 people per tour). The area with wooden swings under the trees is so peaceful. Restroom and restaurant available on site.

We spent the day at Alnwick garden and Lilidorei and it was magical we had the best day together and my kids are older at 10 and 17 we spent the day laughing and smiling and in this completely amazing fairytale world! When the kids are this age it's hard to spend quality time together and here it felt like we were little kids again! I would 100% recommend going! My only suggestion would be go early or late as from about 11 it got so busy was really difficult to properly explore!

Gorgeous place to visit! The staff were amazing and I was able to book in a mobility scooter for free which allowed me to get around the park with ease. There is lots to do in the park and I highly recommend the poison gardens. Our tour guide John Nox was amazing! He was so knowledgeable and fun. He made the experience really interesting and enjoyable and managed to make many of us horrified ! They accommodated a big group of us for a tour as we missed the last one by a few minutes which we were so grateful for.

Visited on a Saturday. Second time going and had been previously a number of years ago. I feel they are improving the place even since the last time I visited and felt like there was more to see this time around. Really enjoyed the informative Poison garden and the host was very engaging.

Visit to the gardens, late March, just before Easter. Gardens slowly wakening up with spring colour, we did the poison garden tour, and the guide was very informative. Lunch in the cafe was reasonably priced. Had a quick walk around the new Lillidore - such a magical place for children.

Beautiful gardens with stunning Waterfall and fountains. Definitely well worth a visit. Give yourself plenty of time as there is much to see. The swings amongst the cherry orchard is a nice place to sit and relax. The poison garden tour is a must. Barbara your tour guide is very knowledgeable and funny. Gift shop and cafe on site.

Lovely walk from Craster, if your not so fit please bear in mind there aren't any seats and there are 2 fields to cross with live stock, one had sheep the other had cows so remember dogs on leads and leave gates as you find them. The walk was litter free, beautiful views of the castle all the way

Excellent ruins of a castle. Amazing coastal walk to get to it. Very imposing on approach. Inside isn't much to shout about, basic shop and some toilets. 1 tower you can climb which has some wonderful views.

Lovely castle to visit. Great coastal walk to this castle making some good views and picture spots. We saw a pod of dolphins just off the coast from here. The castle itself is impressive and is reasonably priced to enter. I would recommend walking all the way round to take in the views. Also, be sure to come at the castle from Embleton also, great view!

Well worth a visit. Although there isn’t any parking nearby, the mile or so walk up to the improving fortress gate is a lovely walk along the coastal path. There are toilets and a small shop where teas and coffees can be purchased by visitors. Although more challenging, the walk from Low Newton to Dunstanburgh Castle is one of the best walks in the area. Highly recommended.

Wonderfully atmospheric English Heritage property. Well worth the 1 mile walk each way passing sheep and cows with the North Sea at your side. You can see sea birds nesting on the cliffs. Amazing place!

Lovely walk up to castle. Lovely grounds and the castle ruins are stunning and still very grand! A would definitely take a picnic and flask of tea/coffee next time, there is a small shop in castle grounds but very limited. Very nice place to visit especially if you enjoy walking!

Worth the long walk from the village car park due to the coastal views and the closeness you get to the birds

Beautiful coastal walk across grassy terrain through livestock so dogs must be kept on the lead. About 1.5 miles. Although English Heritage managed National Trust members still have free access. Lovely walk around the ruins, you are able to climb to the top of one tower up a stone staircase with amazing views. Beverages are available but are limited at the moment. Car park in Quarry car park was £5 for three hours but is very popular it was full by the time we returned to the car at 1.15pm. Portable toilets and toilets at Tourist information at bottom of car park. Pub, dog friendly cafe and kipper smokehouse are available in Craster.

Lovely walk from Craster, about 1.3 miles each way. Uneven walk as well. There far more castle remains than can be seen from embleton. Some great views from the tower once you get there. The walk is past grazing sheep and cows and can get messy ! Don't wear your Gucci trainers !

Good day out throughly enjoyed it, the walk from Craster to the castle is really nice lovely views You can walk the full grounds of the castle & explore the remains. The bonus of the walk back was a visit to the the jolly fisherman Inn for a pint of Ale & kippers in a bun from the van outside fantastic day

Beautiful castle ruins with a lovely walk up, takes about 45 mins. Park at the craster quarry car park and pay for at least three hours parking which at present costs about £6 then follow the signs to the town and onto the castle. The walk is fairly easy though occasionally muddy but gives you some prospective in terms of the distance to the castle and how much work it must have taken to build it. Once at the castle there's a circular route around which includes views of the cliffs and wildlife. Stunning views and lovely castle, dog friendly too.

Parked in Caster and walked across the fields to the castle. Stunning views at the top of the tower. A really interesting place and fantastic walks along the beach behind the castle.

Amazing walk to this beautiful castle, very helpful English heritage staff. Amazing views and the fact you can only get to it by foot makes it.

A long walk from the carpark. Very little displayed info, maybe one of the castles that English Heritage should not charge for. You are basically paying to go up a tower.

Very pleasant walk on an easy grass path from Crater. You may find it expensive to enter (especially for a family) if not English Heritage or National Trust members. However, the best of the place (especially for photos) can be viewed easily from outside the fence. Coast Path loops round and continues North. Clearly a popular spot for dog walkers whether visiting the castle or not. Best photos on a sunny morning - early afternoon

A wonderful example of castle ruins. This majestic spot is best reached via Craster a small harbour town 1.5 miles from the castle. Ample parking with usual, local rates leaves you with a wonderful coastal walk to ruins via agricultural land with mixed live stock grazing. Stunning coastal views lead you to the short climb up the hill yo the castle where you will be greeted by an English Heritage member who will either grant you access if you are a member or request a fee. We are with the national National Trust and are allowed in for free too... The castle has a small shop and toilets, other than that you are left to your own devices to explore the ruins and rear the info boards dotted around the site. A great half day tourist attraction. Craster has a couple of pubs and cafes to help ward off any hunger and thirst pains. To note, there is a beach beyond the castle with breathtaking views of the area, a long sweeping beach with plenty of sand at low tide. There is an access point for the beach with limited parking another mile or two up the coast from Craster.

Beautiful! A walk along the sea which is lovely but long for those of us a little less fit... especially on the way back. I went on a very hot day. The castle was so fascinating, and the grounds were beautiful and wonderful to see the protected coastal area for the wild sea birds. A lot of walking around and then the long walk back definitely took a lot this day in the heat.. but if you brought a picnic and stopped along the way by the sea it would make the walk feel significantly shorter. There is a small shop with souvenirs and cold drinks at the castle. Plus eco toilets. Parking is limited closer to the entrance to the walk but there is a car pack not too much further away to park at. Definitely book your tickets if you're not members and go on a clear sunny day as it just makes the experience so much better.

Lovely friendly welcome from all staff we came into contact with. Gardens well maintained. Lovely relaxing stroll round well posted routes highlighted on on free map. There is one walk through a no return turnstile gate to beach. Church has a lot of history with the Grey family. Many being buried there. The tea rooms are well managed, clean and affordable. Fresh tasty food/cakes and beverages. Spent 4hrs here and still had plenty more to explore.

Headed to the Arboretum for a visit in late March, very wet underfoot due to the awful wet weather recently. Plenty of life starting to bloom - Magnolias, rodedendron, Christmas roses, daffodils, and lots of bulbs. Stopped off at the visitor centre which has a wealth of information and lunch at the tearoom.

Amazingly beautiful! The plants and trees are fantastic the ground walks are easy to get round mainly flat marked out clearly and there is so much to look at if you love the outdoors and trees. The sensory garden is a lovely added touch.Only £8.80 for the day totally worth it. I'll definitely be returning.

More like a 10 star place to visit. The woodland garden was absolutely breathtaking! Let alone the arboretum leading to the sea and the garden borders around the house. Definitely worth a visit! They do garden tours on a Friday and Monday, but as they use volunteers, this is not guaranteed. The wide range of plants and trees is spectacular. I just wish they had a plant shop. Also, you must visit the visitors center, it has so much information about what has been planted, how the garden came to be and it is all laid out in an easy to absorb way. Too be honest, I normally get a bit bored in visitors ctrs. The cafe has lovely sandwiches (esp the ham and cheese) and jacket potatoes, which goes beautifully with a cup of Earl Grey. But, unfortunately the cakes were a bit dry and they don't offer salads. I was staying near by and I visited at least 3 times. It is so much nicer than Alnwick gardens, which was such a disappointment.

I really enjoyed my visit. It is a very nice arboretum. You can walk for many hours through a great variety of woodlands and ponds. Only a small part of the house is open, including a lovely room used for the cafe. There is a big choice of really, really nice homemade cakes. Apparently, it's the place where Earl Grey Tea was created to mask a strange taste in the local water. The one downside is that the "ordinary" tea really doesn't taste nice at all. I find that so surprising. Mind you, if they are still drawing from the original water source, I can see why they had to flavour it originally.

Lovely cakes in the tearoom. Inc great vegan ones. Grounds are extensive but very informal. You can walk for miles! When all the Rhododendrons are out it will be amazing.

Excellent place to visit, we spent a lovely 4+ hours wandering through the grounds. Very quiet, and just a really nice spot. The walking is easy, and it was not busy. Plenty of car parking available. Shout out to the cafe, which had excellent food choices at very reasonable prices with great service. Well worth a visit, the house does not have much to offer in terms of sightseeing, but it is all about the grounds, and these are well worth the entrance fee.

One of the best gardens I’ve visited in a long while. Love the balance between wild and cultivated. Visited in May when the rhododendrons were stunning but need to return in other seasons. Take the time to stroll through the arboretum and down to the beach. So relaxing and full of birdsong. Great tea room too. Perfect day out and we ended up walking 7 miles.

About 12 minutes away from Alnwick there's a wonderful day out that you've probably not heard of. Well priced for a full day out, and a bit of a treat this time of year if you're partial to the odd rhododendron. There are thousands of trees, shrubs and plants to see, with acres of grounds to explore so, if you like walking through beautiful woodland and gardens then you'll love this There's ample parking, a lovely tea room and well signed walks in and around the estate.

Very reasonably priced. Mainly walking through the pretty gardens and woodlands. Can visit bottom of hall but quickly done unless you read everything about the kinds of trees and plants. Nice tearoom with homemade cake. Friendly staff

Lovely Arboretum at the house of Earl Grey. £9pp entrance fee. Traditional cafe serving hot and cold food. Very good value and freshly cooked. Toilets and a small visitor centre about the house and family. We spent 3 hours here wondering around the trees in October sunshine and then a nice cake. Pleasent relaxing afternoon.

Have given 5 stars based on gardens which are extensive and full of most unusual specimens. Lots of footpaths around estate and 3.5 hours not enough time to walk around estate. Sensory garden good...Church well worth finding as gives history about previous lady of house. Also Charles Grey prime ministers tomb here. Don't miss interpretation centre..no sign to it but is through front door of house and has good info boards..large map and two rooms where can relax and read books and enjoy splendour of house Through two rooms and couple of corridors. Tearoom worth a visit as serves Earl Grey tea...varying home made cakes and open till 18.00 hours. However northumberland cackle biscuits as described on info Internet page not evident and none of staff knew what they were!! Two enormous severe paintings in tearoom demonstrate original room part of house. Think one was Daniel in lions den..no idea or guess on other one. Gift shop inside tearoom just articles on shelves and table... Cake and Earl Grey acceptable. Make sure get map of gardens as there is a route of interest with marked points however we were not offered one at entrance kiosk.... No picnics or dogs allowed in grounds however picnic tables are available in car park. The one strange fact remains however despite discovering Earl Grey tea there is no mention of it that I could find on any info board...... Gardens will be going back to..to explore further

This was a gem of a find. Well worth the drive off the main coastal road to find this lovely pub with some amazing views. The menu was lovely and chatting to the team changes weekly. I would recommend booking in advance as there are maybe only about 10 tables inside. The pub has seating outside which is a great spot for drinks and both inside and outside are dog friendly. The pub also has its own brewery! The food was very fresh and simple but utterly delicious. A walk along the beach is also needed as it is beautiful. We will definitely be back.

The Ship Inn has a good feeling from the start, it is in a great situation with traditional decor and furnishings. No music, no internet just sit yer'self down and have a natter. Everyone is friendly and the staff are really switched on, yet it has a relaxed atmosphere. Well worth booking in advance as it is very popular, don't expect to simply drop in and expect a free table unless it's a wet Wednesday in January!

Great pub perfectly located for pit stop on walk along coastal path. Nice home produced ales and food we tried was tasty (kippers/pie). Definitely worth a visit. Staff very friendly too, we were even warned when they were going to release gas in the on site brewery!

A treasure of a pub & a joy to eat there. The pub has its own micro brewery so a must for those that like craft real ales. The food is superb and the setting casual, what more could you ask for?

Great little pub in a perfect location by the sea in Low Newton. Serves local food and beer and is v good. You can sit on the green outside and soak in the sea air and surroundings. Be aware it gets v busy at lunchtime and service at the bar seems to struggle. I waited 20 mins to be served

Cannot fault the quality of the produce, but I have to say that the amount of food for the prices charged is a scandal, my Sister had the ham stottie which was just under £10 it consisted of a bread roll, 1 slice of ham a very small tomato cut into four and a pile of assorted leaves. My husband ordered a pie, steak and ale, which was delicious it came with an arrangement of leaves we ordered roast potatoes with it which turned out to be Parmentier potatoes that had been put in the oil and pulled out again, not crisp just cold and oily. The ploughman's was a 3/4 plate of salad leaves with very little dressing could not tell what it was even, 1/2 an apple 1/2 cherry tomato a small piece of hard cheddar 1/2 an egg cup of pickle 3 thin slices of bread with 2 butter portions for just under £12. We were told by our waiter that just like everyone else they were affected by the cost of living crisis, sick of hearing that as an excuse too!!

Nice pub on the shores of the Northumberland coast. Great to call in when passing, the bar is only a couple of meters and they have 2 rooms and plenty tables and outside seating when it's busy, but you'll be open to the elements. They serve local beer which is great and I had some fruit cake which was lovely and moist

Lovely setting in the small square with amazing views out to sea & surrounding landscape. Excellent selection of the beer pub's own brewed beers. Off the normal routes but worth a visit - particularly if you like a Pint of Cask.

Absolutely beautiful setting to enjoy delicious locally sourced food. We were a party of four, we had a cheese toastie, kipper pate with sourdough, kippers and the crab stottie, all absolutely wonderful. Can also recommend the house pilsner and autumn red ale. But of a queue for service but that's to be expected when a small place is accommodating so many people and the staff are all so lovely and helpful. Not our first visit and won't be our last.

The Ship Inn has a small brewery next door and serves its own ales and cask. We visited on a Wednesday bearing in mind it was the summer holidays the pub was busy both in and outside. It’s not big inside but we did manage to get a bench outside. The weather was great so preferred that option. Set within a small court of fisherman’s houses it has a lovely view to the beach. Note parking might be a problem as there is no car park. Access only for residents. Would recommend a visit just to try the ales.

We enjoyed a yummy lunch at the Ship Inn after a delightful time on the nearby beach. My brother & I paddled in the sea & we all enjoyed watching people & dogs playing, swimming, sunbathing and walking along the coast. Personally, I was pleased to find that the Ship Inn is dog friendly. As I haven't any myself, I love to pet others' when I see them.

A great beach to walk along via the cute village, such a beautiful spot to take in the views, see the sea, breathe in the fresh air - recommended for a day out and relaxing walk. You might meet some cute dogs too 🐕

Always drop in here after a visit to Alnwick or Seahouses. If you are lucky to be here on a sunny day the views are lovely but I would recommend heading up earlier as the car park can fill up quickly. The beach is large and the sand is lovely. Sometimes an ice cream van is parked up. The drawback in my opinion is the toilets as they are a bit of a walk from the car park

I think this is my favourite beach in the world, it’s beautiful whatever the weather - glorious sunshine or driving rain. I just love it.

Stunningly beautiful and natural with lovely sands and sea views, with a small harbour just inside the mouth of the River Aln. From the car park by the beach (£2 charge) you can walk straight onto the sands. As you walk south along the beach you can see Alnmouth nestled behind the sand dunes. Keep walking along the beach to reach the mouth of the River Aln and follow it past the small harbour to reach the road up into the town. Such a wide array of beauty and variety to see.

Beautiful and very quiet part of Northumberland. The North beach parking at the golf course can get busy and you have to pay for parking, the South Beach is free parking, however the road to this part is diabolical and totally destroyed. Its more a gravel road with very big pot holes everywhere. I drive a 4x4 which is high off the ground so have no problems, but I've seen normal road cars get damaged as they don't have the ground clearance to clear the massive holes in the road. However, if you do navigate your way through this minefield of a road, you will be welcomed to the best beach in the North East by a long shot. Alnmouth village its self is a spectacular little village with some awesome pubs for real ale, and awesome cafes for good tea and coffee and of course good scones and cakes. Great day out in general. Just a quick reference to the above mentioned car park: you can no longer use it. The council have put up 2 wooden barriers to stop cars from venturing down to that car park. Which is a shame as its the best location for the beach and generally quiet. People are now parking along the main road and walking down to that stretch of beach. To which the council has now made that stretch of road dangerous.

Lovely estuary, what with the hot weather, clear blue sky and fine, light coloured sand it was almost like places i have been abroad. It wont be like this all the time though..... Parking was not too bad when we were there and we got a space right next to the estuary. I Imagine it will be a different story in the summer hols.

Very relaxing and lovely sand. Such a large beach, nice sand. A wind breaker may be necessary. Quicker to walk to than Bamburgh. Some nice eateries close by for refreshments. Parking free on road but limited in my opinion as the town has lots of double yellow lines and the reviews of the car park suggest it's not suitable for low cars with the pot holes.

Absolutely love, love, loved this beach. Miles of beach, unspoilt, practically deserted, although plenty of people walking up and down. Very clean. Nature reserve. Highly recommend if you want a long,, healthy stroll. But..... Don't let everyone know.... The Northumbrian coast is a hidden gem which is best kept hidden!!

Beautiful clean sands with no toe breaking pebbles. Really flat walking out into the very clean sea. Looks more like a tropical sea stretches on for miles.

We had a great couple of hours here. There were activities for my son to do. 1 was Halloween themed but the others I'm sure were long term. A mouse hunt for smaller kids and a museum detective one for the older ones. Very interesting museum. Staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Would go again if we were in the area. My son really enjoyed it.

I have enjoyed every visit to this quirky museum. I always find something new in the regular display and like that the upstairs is dedicated to guest displays, meaning that there really is something new everything you visit.

Spent a very pleasant 2 hours here on Tuesday. The staff were exceedingly friendly and helpful, spending lots of time explaining the exhibits to us and the children- would thoroughly recommend. The current exhibition on record covers is also well worth a look and very funny

Excellent Museum in the heart of Alnwick Northumberland run by excellent and extremely friendly staff with victorians on the first floor and a range of events all year round. There is also a lift and it is fun for the whole family.not very busy

Just back from a fantastic visit this morning. The most family friendly museum I think we have ever been to. Interesting things for the adults to read whilst the kids were entertained by the dressing up, drawing etc. Well worth a visit.

After many visits staring longingly at some breathtaking art we have finally taken the plunge and bought a beautiful original. We are absolutley thrilled and cannot wait to finish our home to have this gem displayed. Thanks to the gallery for their generous pay up option we can collect our painting when we are ready and has made owning this original affordable.

Having been in several times before, including visits with my dogs, I was turned away last weekend. Pouring down with rain outside, the abrupt female inside, asked me to tie my dogs up outside. Before I had chance to ask if we could stand them at the door, whilst my wife and I took it in turns to look round we were told again to go out. Our intention was to spend some considerable cash. We had gone there intent on buying some art. Due to one rude woman's attitude we now will not cross their threshold! Pity. Courtesy costs nothing!

Great place for a relaxed circular walk through a privately owned rural estate. Sensibly, dogs aren’t allowed because of the proximity to grazing farm animals, so ignore the one and two star reviews. The pleasure is in the well maintained paths, peaceful rural spaces and scenery. No dogs, playgrounds, cycling, toilets or cafe. That’s its charm.

A really nice place to go and admire peace and tranquility of nature. I wrote a review of this place a couple of years back but the pin point location got deleted. When writing my review I had rated it at 4 stars. This was because of a very rude, nosey and obnoxious individual who used to reside at the gate house, and would give people grief over the most silly and pathetic things. (Also since writing that review, he has done much worse such as verbally abusing and swearing at visitors, as well as being extremely unpleasant to the residents at the park.) This person has now since moved out and a much more pleasant gate keeper now lives there. There are lots of different routes and trails to choose from, all with very nice views and landscapes; a treasure trove for hikers and photographers! Additionally, there are no entry fees to worry about, so it is a great place to go if you're on a tight budget and don't want to pay for the overpriced tickets at Alnwick Castle.

Hulne park is beautiful,with 3 different walks ranging from 4 miles to 6.2,you can park near the entrance,Be advised there's no toilet facilities & no refreshments so go before you go lol 🤣,we took some food & drink & kept the area totally clean good day out .

No dogs allowed in one of the biggest parks in Alnwick. We live in Northumberland where the majority of walkers have dogs, what a joke. Its easy enough to implement a dog on leash at all times rule, no wonder it was empty when I got there.

No cycling. No dogs. Lovely walks, colour coded to show the route. Suggested times/number of miles. Not too far from Alnwick Castle & Gardens. Pheasants are common in the grounds. We saw a heron & deer. We walked the RED ROUTE, which is almost 5 miles, taking in the hilltop priory ruins. There are pretty bridges, including stone, timber, steel suspension, and an iron bridge dating back to 1812. There are numerous gravel paths that make this venue unsuitable for wheelchair users. Take your own food & drink. Staff work around the estate on quad bikes & ranger style vehicles. We started our walk at 11am & completed the route just after 4pm, which is when the park closes to the public. (late August 2023)

Lots of space to park on road leading into the park. Free to park. 3 different way marked routes all about 4-6 miles. Paths easy to follow. Mainly surfaced roads. No dogs allowed.

We really enjoyed our 6 mile walk round this huge privately owned park near the centre of Alnwick. The main walks are along sealed or gravel roads so usable for wheelchairs. most is relatively level too. Very pretty. Lots of wildlife from herons and ducks to deer and thousands of pheasant (I'm guessing the main reason for the no dogs policy). It was peaceful and beautiful...and free!

A nice walk, good for when tracks are muddy because a lot of it is paved.

Great place for a walk in a beautiful and quiet historic ‘estate’ park. River Alan runs through the park and there are three different well signposted walks varying from 3.5 to 6 miles. Terrain is undulating but not too demanding. Some nice well maintained river bank areas where you can sit and relax. Abundance of natural beauty and working farmland with livestock. N.B No dogs allowed which suited me ( and no doubt the sheep!) down to the ground. Nice to see not everyone panders to ‘dog owners’.

Great place for a walk with options for 6,4 or 2miles long. Really quiet and peaceful no noise of traffic or anything else .walked the 6 miles and thoroughly enjoyed it can't wait to do it again

Such a gorgeous space and took me right back to being in primary school in the best possible way! The gallery is full to the brim of a wide variety of artwork spanning a few rooms. The cafe is cool with a small but delicious offering of biscuits snd snacks. Not much seating inside but there are seats outside, so wrap up if you’re visiting in the colder months. Worth a visit!

Great gallery, some really unique pieces compared to the endless generic prints elsewhere. Been visiting when on holiday in the area for the last few years and almost always come away with something! Highly recommended.

Lots of local views in paint, but depicted in arresting styles, so capturing essences of places eg the wide sandy bay at the bottom of Alnmouth’s high street. And on this sunshiny day, a relaxing cup of coffee in the spacious and flower-filled front yard adds to the creative haven. A ‘must visit’ gallery when in the area.

3 of us popped into what's advertised as a cafe & gallery for a look, snack & a coffee. Nothing is priced. Few cakes & little else. Got 3 cans of pop & my daughter bought what we thought was a nice 'post card'. Price £18.00!!! My wife was too shocked to say anything. Ludicrous. Edit following the OSG response. Similarly, do not advertise what you do not deliver. Moreover, set your stall out in manner that is less misleading. Quite obviously those who are misguided enough to enter your establishment in future will need to conform to your way of thinking/doing otherwise they are not welcome. FYI the very next day we visited the gallery in Alnwick where we spent over £380 on prints. The attitude and welcome there was somewhat different and the lady lives in Alnmouth! Oh the irony...

Superb gallery in an old school building serving drinks and snacks. A beautiful old building with high ceilings and big windows brings out the best of the art on display. A wide range of regional and Northern artists across a variety of mediums. Particularly strong on print making. Friendly staff and great for a quick drink and a cake. Worth a visit.

I called in (the first time in several years) whilst cycling home on Sustrans NCN1 as I felt seriously in need of sustenance (cake). As indicated it's been a while since my last visit when I purchased some very nice Ravilious cards. I've always liked the gallery's owners/picture selectors taste in art. Having gone in for a quick cup of coffee and a piece of cake I left with some delightful cards, and a charming origami 'cloud of butterflies' for my lepidopterist wife. There was more art on display than I recalled and some attractive prints at reasonable prices, and some very nice china mugs and other items. The setting on a cool afternoon was quiet and sheltered, nice tables with sun awnings. The coffee, Illy, was predictably perfect, again it's a matter of personal taste, but outside the Antipodes you can't get better coffee than a well prepared Illy. The cake, suitably calorific to get me up the couple of short but steep climbs on the way home, again just what the doc. ordered. All in all a perfect visit. It'll not be long before I'm back.

We stopped by on our walk back to Boulmer for a garlic and mozzarella pizza and soft drinks. We also ordered a framed print to match one already purchased. The pizza was very tasty, the dog even got some crust.

This is a stunning location, we visit here regularly, and the whole family enjoys exploring these historic ruins. You can also have a look inside the old church at the same time. They do request a donation from visitors which is used to maintain the building.

Great little castle that you may be lucky to enjoy all by yourself. Set in a lovely location free parking and entry. Be sure to put a donation in the local St. John the Baptist church you walk past to get to it.

Wonderful hidden gem in some stunning countryside. Very quite during the week. We had the site to ourselves as we walked around. Definitely worth a visit

Excellent free castle, lovely location and interesting ruins. Reasonable parking for at least 6 or 7 cars. Impressive solar tower with a leaning section. The (much more ruined) remains of ranges of buildings around the courtyard and a barbican gate can also be seen. Lots of interesting details to see, including: a drainage channel in the courtyard and culvert under the wall; carved heads on pillars and fireplaces; ornate arches and pillars; remains of octagonal-shaped corner towers.

Small carpark, room for 4 cars?, next to beautiful ancient church. Free to visit. Short walk down hill to reach it. Very little remains of original building. Beautiful setting with view of impressive railway viaduct.

This ruin is free and 11th century church nearby has info boards about church and castle. Gentle 3min walk from church takes you to castle..fine views of ruin with disused railway viaduct in background. Can wander over what's left of Manor house ruins and view defensive tower. Church has large folder of favourite sharing recipies free of charge idea being goid to share something of joy with others. Back to castle well worth a visit..quiet and can imagine its past life

This is such a lovely place to visit especially since its free! There is not loads of parking space available given that the entrance is just down a small lane but it doesn't seem to be a place that gets extremely busy. The ruins themselves are really impressive and you can see the metal pins they've put in to support the Solar Tower. The church is quaint and there is a beautiful stained glass window which looks amazing when the sun hits it. Really enjoyed our visit.

Lovely Castle ruins with great views in every direction. Like the fact you can walk around the grounds and get a real feel of somewhere. The church and viaduct are worth a look around while your there. Going to walk the the ridge next time I'm there and chekc out the Crags.

We stopped here on the way back to Longframlington from Newton On The Sea. We could see the castle from the road and wanted to go and have a look. Be a bit careful on your approach to the junction from the road as it comes up quite quickly and caused my wife a bit of confusion 🤣 The short drive to the castle was pleasant and there is a small, free, parking area by a church (which was unfortunately closed) before a short and easy walk to the ruins. There is no entry fee. We were lucky enough to be the only people there and it was a lovely place to visit. Information boards gave us insight into the castle's history as we wandered around. Part of the ruins are fenced off due to unstable masonry so be careful on your way around. We didn't stay long as the site is small but it was a welcome break from the journey and an interesting insight into the history of the area.

Peaceful place to visit with beautiful landscapes surrounding every turn. The old church of St.John the Baptist still stands today and is still serving its community and surrounding area. Well worth and hour of your time relaxing in this enchanting place.

An historical ruin, it's worth walking around and trying to imagine what it must have been like for those that lived inside it.

Lovely place to visit 😊. The hotel, food and a lovely golf course with spectacular views as you play the course. We had rooms without bathrooms so you share a bathroom with a few other rooms. We have booked rooms with ensuite for next year. Our room looked over the 18th green and you could see the sea in the distance. We played the course twice. The first day is was very windy and extremely difficult for me. It was calmer the second day and enjoyed my golf much more 😊. The food was amazing and we had fast and friendly service. Looking forward to visiting and playing golf here many more times I hope. Excellent ⛳️

One of my favourite courses in the area. I work 5min down the road so I always try to get down once a week. Course is always in great condition no matter the time of year. Some excellent holes that are a challenge for even the lowest handicappers. Score under 80 here and you have played well.

Played this course on Sunday with 3 friends, was on a bucket list for number of year’s…. Had a Foxton Breakfast which was perfect start and everyone was respectful and very friendly, the course itself is now in TOP 3 I’ve ever played, for the time of year it was just immaculate. Huge thanks to all and plans for staying over are now in progress. ⛳️🏌️‍♂️👍🏻

Called here for lunch and we were disappointed. Despite the friendly attitude of the young lady who served us, we waited 45 minutes for some of our food and an hour had passed when we were still waiting for the remainder of our meals. We had to ask for a refund for the missing item because two of us had a train to catch. There were other customers who had the same experience. We've eaten in numerous Golf Clubs in Scotland and have never experienced this poor service. The 2 stars are for the young lady behind the bar, who remained pleasant throughout.

One of my favourite courses to play! The course is in tremendous condition, the greens played brilliant and the bar staff where really friendly in the club house which had a cracking pint of Guinness! Would highly recommended!

Welcomes walkers of the coastal path. An oasis! Great menu at reasonable prices. We were glad we stopped by on a beautiful sunny day!

Good link's course with parkland grass and features. Stunning views of the coast. Good test of golf and variety of holes.

My favourite golf course in Northumberland. Great for all handicaps. Limited beer selection on bar but good food. Non-golfers made very welcome.

Good place they do some nice food in the club house plus it's next to the beach and the North sea so the views change every day

Lovely course, in great condition, located above the beach at Alnmouth. Fantastic views & a good challenge for golfers of all abilities. The '19th' is just as good for those after round de-briefs!

Great market covering a great range of items from bags to candles including drinks and food as well.

Amazing atmospheric centre of the medieval historical market town of Alnwick Northumbria. Alnwick is a great place for all the family bursting with history that provides a unique step back in time experience in the heart of a modern community. At Alnwick Market you can almost hear the fish sellers of old hawking their wares fresh off the boats at the local harbours. Alnwick is a safe family friendly place.

Purchased these bad boys from the Anwick market. Pictures of Sheep and Highland Coo are from Stu-art. The artist was lovely and chatted about his homemade ink whilst carefully packaging our purchases. We also purchased from a few of the other stalls for Christmas presents and such like! Really lovely wee market.

Lovely town and market. Some beautiful 3d pictures, retro tiles and Some fab cafes and the tastiest was market the bratwurst for me and venison burger for the hubby. Beautiful place to visit. Enjoyed the castle too.

Great place to visit on the weekends. Pastry and other hand-made goods are offered. Don't miss visiting the OWLS. So cute, great for the kids to see and learn more about.

If only meddling self important ego stroking councillors would leave Alnwick alone...forever creating pedestrian only areas resulting in Traffic snarl ups elsewhere... Now the are even thinking about wasting yet more money rejinking the Cobbles...

Historic market town with some nice independant shops. Small market but interesting

Nice retail park, good variety of shops, plenty of parking spaces.

Great location at seaside links course. Only 9 holes but fairly challenging. Greens VERY tricky which protect the fairly short course. Beware coming down from 7tb tee! Although a great view, it's a steep and long descent.

Such a beautiful beach, could have stayed longer here. We were lucky to visit on a beautiful sunny day then sit outside the village golf bar and dry off in the sun.

Excellent, good priced breakfast baps. Bacon, egg or sausage. Bacon was excellent quality and plenty of it. Sausage good too (no gristle!). Was even given a couple of treats for the dog ,🙂👍

I'm not a golfer, but it was a very pleasant place to sit, have a coffee and snack whilst watching people play. It's just a couple of mins from there to the beach, we had a great time.

Only used the club house for a meal. Very welcoming for visitors, dog friendly and very reasonable priced food and drink. Outside veranda with sea views and golfers finishing 18th hole. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Amazing course all year round! Lovely views and definitely tests your links golf skills. Some accuracy is needed so maybe not recommend to a complete beginner.

Probably the most fun 9-holes of golf I’ve ever had!

A lovely spot for lunch or a cuppa after a walk along the beach. Try the black pudding scotch egg. Dogs welcome.
