Unique place on Earth and it’s definitely worse visiting it. If you’d like to go down you need a certified guide or there is a hiking route around the crater and you can do it by yourself.

Great hike around the Caldeira. 8km up and downs - don't forget to bring rain jackets. It is pretty windy up there and clouds pass through the Caldeira. You would also need hiking boots as the trail is quiet narrow and muddy.

While visiting family all over the island, we decided to stop at a place my mom grew up loving to visit. Caldeira is essentially a huge crater at the top of the island. Although it is typically incredibly foggy up top, there view is still incredible. The ride up is about 10-15 minutes and very rocky and bumpy, but well worth it. Many years ago, people were able to fish here since there was water at the bottom. A very interesting and amazing place to visit in Faial.

During our visit to Fajal we were unlucky with the weather. So for the hole week the caldeira was covered in clouds. But that didn't stop us and I'm very happy it didn't. We informed in town when the cloud would presumably be the thinnest and planned the hike around the crater. During the hike we had everything from sun till rain. But it's beautiful!! And a great walk even in not perfect conditions.

If you are coming to the Horta Marina by boat from the american continent you have to go on anchor in the harbour. Then a medical boat will come and get your information. After that you will be picked up around noon and be brought to the pcr test. We got our results per mail and per radio the next morning. If there are many tests it might take one more day. After receveing your results you are free on the azores. If you go into the marina, laundry costs 5€ (drying again 5€) per mashine. Showering costs 1,55€. We are on a 41 feet ship and paid around 15€ per night. So the prices are fine. I give 3 stars because the sanitaries are only open from 8-11:30 and 13-16. Thats a real disatvantage and i have never experienced it somewhere else.

Lovely marina / harbour. Definitely a working harbour and a lot less tourist oriented; catering for the needs of crews stopping over on their trans-Atlantic / round the world adventures. Fascinating. Great tradition where the crews paint a logo or memento of their visit, some updated many times. Brilliant to wander round and read. A couple of bars / restaurants on the marina though mainly concentrated on street just off the marina at the Southern end. Usual places offering trips on and off the water. A nice "vibe" here, kids playing, people working. Very nice indeed.

Beautiful island, green with sweet hills. And the marina is full of sailing boats doing a stop during their transat (well, like us). Crews do some painting everywhere. It is a must do for them.

Horta marina is one of the most visited in the world and I think is the most colourful. Here all the visiting sailors decorate the harbour walls with their personal paintings making it a lovely exhibition. Also you feel the good vibes of a town surrounded by whales and sailors.

We have eaten here twice in four days and have had good experiences each time. Yes, occasionally the service is a bit unorganized, but tonight it was perfect, thanks to our waitress who is from Lisbon and speaks perfect English. Sorry I didn’t get her name. I had the codfish and it was excellent, served with potato and spinach. My wife had an excellent salad and we both had the house white wine, which was very good. They don’t push you to leave when you are done, they just let you relax. And the setting with Mt. Pico changing expressions every few minutes is perfect. I can recommend Peter Cafe highly.

Really cool spot with lots of history. Their house Gin + Tonic was definitely a highlight. The food was very yummy and nice spot to sit and relax. We had the barracuda as a fish of the day and it was massive! Almost couldn’t finish it. Also the mix grill skewer looked very cool so we had to try that too. The limpets were the best we had! We went during the low season but there were still larger tour groups dropping by. So I could see how it could get a little hectic!

It’s a bit overhyped in my opinion, too many bad mannered Europeans for my liking. Definitely chaotic service, ‘to many cooks in the kitchen’ type thing. No hostess or bus boy, the two servers did everything while 4 others just stood behind the bar looking shocked that they were supposed to work at all. The food was good, some basic bar food mixed with local specialities. Cheese & Olives was fantastic! The Pirate steak was nice, but I rather dislike frozen fries. The Pastel de Nata was not up to my standard, I think main land Portugal would be disappointed.

Incredible sailors cafe restaurant with a possibility to send postcards as well. The atmosphere and the vibe of the place itself makes it one of the must see things in Horta. They have a very famous gin and tonic which you need a lot to get drunk but still the taste is very good. Every kind of meat you get will be pure Azores cow so it will definitely be good and the one with land on its name was the best in my opinion. Suggesting this place %100

Must visit location. Reservations are recommended, but if you're popping in for a quick visit the may let you use a table before a reservation arrives if you're quick about it (just a drink and apps). Friendly staff and easy service. Got a cheese dish and a gin cocktail.

They have a lot of staff, but somehow they are barely managing to get everyone served. The food is nothing special, below average. The service is in some way really rude and they don’t value the customer. We didn’t ask for some special service, but only to acknowledge that they have a customer willing to pay money. The drinks were good, and that is the only positive thing. I don’t recommend this place for anything else but drinks. If you are thinking to have a meal, support some other business in the town.

Do not miss to eat here. 20-30 minutes needed to have a table, but the athmosphere, the staff and the food was also amazing. Try the gin! Wait for a table inside and search the flags on my pictures ;) we were in a rush for the ferry, but the steak came in 15 minutes and it was top 5 steak of my life.

Amazing place. I've been to 6 Azorean islands and this is my favourite place so far. The number one of the house is the Peter Gyn drinks. The Gin-Gan-Go is delicious if you prefer something without gin tonic. To eat, the creamy garlic bread is a good option to start. The fish soup is also good. The atmosphere is really cool.

Went here on a cold, blusterous day. It has an old world charm to it. It's not hard to imagine sitting here a 100 years ago. The crew was very attentive to my needs. I was allowed to bring in my service dog. I ordered the sailor's pot roast. It's a pork pot roast with mashed potatoes. It's a hardy, filling meal and did me well with the cold weather outside. It had a delicious, unique taste to it. I felt like I was eating a home cooked meal, rather than something I ordered in a restaurant. I finished with the coconut pudding and an Expresso. I will definitely eat here again. Thanks for a great experience.

Food was good. The waitress was great. She was interacting with my 3 year old niece and keeping her entertained. I liked seeing all of the flags and signs from different boats that have stopped there. Got to see the famous place in person. Some of the people in and around the cafe look like they've been at sea for weeks. There is a gift shop next door and a scrimshaw museum upstairs as well. If you're in Faial, it's a must stop, even if it's just to take some pictures.

We were recommended to visit this restaurant by our tour guide from Furnas. The food was badly cooked, given how easily accesible fresh seafood is to get. The octopus was overcooked and disintegrating, the tuna was rubbery. Probably the worse food we had whilst visiting the Azores. The bar was mainly filled with tourists. Honest review from someone who has been here multi times over the years. I feel the more popular this place becomes the more they feel less inclined to provide a good service. This review is in low season and they are not busy but it takes an hour to get a beer. Best to come buy a t-shirt say you arrived then go to a restaurant down the road that will be cheaper and will give you a much better experience.

Nice place where to eat in Horta. It's very tipical, fishing theme. We had some good starters: limpets, cheese and olives, garlic bread; then we ordered the main dish: the tenderlion with mashed sweet potatoes was a good quality meat plate, the octopus with sauteèd greens anche jacket potatoes could be better but the grilled tuna was delicious. We also tried Peter's gin, but it wasn't special...ginjinha was nice. We spent 30€ each.

Very nice museum. Here you can find out everything about Capelinhos eruption and its effect for living on the Faial. Also some information about other vulaconoes. Lightouse next to museum is awesome, go to the top and admire how nature changed island's landscape. Convenient, free car park close to museum.

The Museum opens at nine and closes at six pm (in summer). It is very interesting and interactive, it explains in depth the formation of the Capelinhos peninsula in 1957, following a devastating eruption just off the coast of Faial. The ticket includes a visit up the lighthouse, with an astonishing view of the surroundings. Some parts of the Museum were probably cutting edge when it was opened, but look a bit outdated now, for example the 3d projection of the formation of the peninsula, very interesting but pretty dark and out of focus.

The exhibition is interesting including: videos, pictures, scientific and historic explanations. If possible, try to join a guided tour, it is definitely worth it and improves a lot the experience. At the end of the visit it is possible to visit the old lighthouse, which offers a unique point of view of the area. The stairs to reach the top are a bit complicated.

The visit to the interpretation center of Capelinhos Volcano is very rewarding both for scientific information as well as travel sightseeing. You learn a lot about volcanoes in general as well as for the particular volcano and his eruption in 1958, the most recent in the Azores. Part of this top museumof Faial is built underground so to keep intact the landscape. Climb the stairs to the top of the old lighthouse to enjoy the views and understand the impact of the eruption that partially burried it.

🌋 Best museum in the island! Old light house was cover by the ashes of the volcano. They rebuilt the old tower and did a museum underground. You can go up the lighthouse for the great views and visit the museum. 🆕 Some parts of the museum have been recently renovated

Have you ever been inside a Bond Villain lair? Do you want to have done? Do you also want to learn about volcanic activity around the world? Go here, then. This is a cool museum/ movie/ lighthouse visit all in one. The museum rambles through a labyrinth of underground rooms and is very modern and cool. The movie incorporated great lamps and fans to highlight different got and cool sections, something new for me. The lighthouse itself was neat, too. Lots of steps, though.

Very interesting and well worth a visit to give context to the events that created the surrounding landscape as well as the island group in general. Great collection of volcanic formations on display. Free to use the toilets and refreshment cafe though there is a charge to tour the centre's displays, including a 3D film. The charge does include entry to climb the lighthouse. Amazing building, looks like a James Bond villains lair when you step inside and nice and cool to sit in. It's "underground", or really under the layers deposited by the eruption that formed the island and some of gallery walls are actually the buries lower storeys of the lighthouse.

The educational center has interactive videos, a model of the earth on which you can remove the oceans to view the tectonic plates and volcanos. Examples of the various types of volcanic rocks and crystals. You can view the original film taken when the volcano erupted between 1957-58. Or see the time lapse video of how the Azores Island came to be over the course of two million years. The best surprise was the movie..an experience in itself... Recommend for everyone. The building is an architectural marvel.

The museum/interpretation center tells the story of how volcanoes shaped our earth and especially about the Azores' history. It has a lot of different rocks and it is very educational. It has a small theatre where they show an educational movie about the creation of earth. The only downside is that the hologram did not really work like a hologram should. I visited this beach twice because it was an easy walk from my hotel in Horta. The landscape is very nice. Afternoon time is relaxing with some bars and restaurants around. The water is shallow and looks polluted from algae. I give it five stars for the lanscape and three for the swimming conditions, so a final compromise of four! You can also swim near the gate of the agjacent sea wall.

I was stung by jelly fish while swimming, got skin burn and allergic reaction. The lady from the beach staff helped me and provided first aid. The problem is that the warning sign about jelly fish is at the end of the beach, not at the entrance. Also saw 1 dead “caravela portuguesa” (man o war) jelly fish, which is still dangerous even being on the sand, but also no notice from the administration about this. Won’t come to this beach again.

Nice beach for a refreshing swim in the ocean. It's not too crowded and has a few cosy restaurants nearby. The edge of the ocean may appear a bit dirty because of all the seaweed-like plants near the shore. Deeper into the ocean is a rich sealife, perfect for snorkeling.

A nice place to visit even in winter, it was a real surprise: we did not expect to find such a rich variety of orchids and a demonstration of the endemic vegetal life of the archipelago. The cat Tarzan was super keen to welcome and cuddle the visitors. The person at the reception was very nice and available to explanations and chat. 5 €/person, and it was worth it. Don't miss it!

Nice place to spend a couple of hours - having an enjoyable walk, looking at plants and learning more about native Azores plants, invasive species and the efforts people are putting to keep the bio diversity. You can start by watching a movie in which you learn more about the preservation efforts and history of the garden. The garden itself is quite big and has been recently extended. There are different sections - native Azores plants, "exotic plants" which have been imported here, and there's also an orchiderium

i went to botanical garden by walking from town near the ferry terminal. It took about 30mins one way. i used Google map to get there, but there are 3 or so signs on the street which direction we should go. About 1/4 or so areas inside garden was under construction when i visited in early June in 2018. I dont know which season we have many bloomed flowers, but the time i visited, there are limited variety of flowers were bloomed. (= not a lot). If my memory is correct, i paid 8Euro as adult. if you need to kill time, ya, you can go. if you have other things to do, you can make "visiting this garden" as lower priority.

It was a pleasant surprise! We had been told it was small so we only went because it was included in the tour of te Dabney house. I am delighted that we did! It is indeed small, but it is a very interesting project! It is very important to have the guide explanation of how the Aquarium works, and on that I have to say Alejandro was not only professional and kind, but also his enthusiasm for his work is contagious! Thank you for the visit and I only pity that we did not dedicate some more time to it!

Nice place to visit ( specially if you take time to do the trekking around Monte da Guia, its on the way). The cost p/ person is 4 eur. Indeed not a typical aquarium that lives only from tourism. The idea here its to mixure tourism with a work place. 90% of the fishes (which are exclusively from Azores region) will be sold & transferred to other aquariums around the world or are temporarily there to be taken care off. I recommend it. The staff was nice and explain us many stuff. In the end its possible to watch a 7min video with a short explanation of the marine life around Faial.

Overpriced! Close to a tourist trap... there is a reason why you don't see pictures of it... very kind and helpful staff but the aquarium is closer to some tanks with fish... you find one aquarium and 7 tanks with windows. Not worth the money, 4 per adult. The worst part of it is that you can't get the ticket for the aquarium alone, you have to visit another exposition about American consuls (boring)...

Supposedly it is a public aquarium but in practice it is a collection holding tanks for a private company that supplies fishes from Portuguese waters to public aquariums around the world. The species present depend on the orders the private company receives and the aquariums are mostly bare tanks as it is temporary. The one highlight is that they do some wildlife rehabilitation work, mostly with sea turtles.

Terrible terrible service. It closes at 5 pm and the lady did not want to let us in at 4:50 even though we had purchased tickets before. She was very rude but eventually let us in. DO NOT VISIT THIS PLACE. It's a waste of money. There are barely any fish to see and the place is just awful. Avoid going here because there is nothing to see, typical tourist trap.

This is a big church in central Horta, in some place between the harbour and Praia do Prim. The church vault above the sacristy has murals with the coat of arms of a dozen distinguished families of old Horta. Between them the family of the Flemish who colonised first the island and gave Horta its name. The square in front of the church has nice stonework, the kind of "calchada", in black and white.
