If you are fortunate and get to vist Lago Maggiore an hour north of Milano Italy via train or driving, make sure not to miss Isola Madre! This beatuful island has extrodinary gardens, a nice resturant (see my review) and a stunning villa. Palazzo dell'Isola Madre is one of my favorite places on the lake. In 1014, Emperor Henry II granted the island to the nuns of the monastery of San Felice of Pavia. Lancellotto Borromeo married the daughter of the Doge of Genoa, Luisa Adorno and purchased the island in 1501 from the church and introduced the cultivation of citrus fruit to the island, the plants being brought from Liguria, along with a gardener to tend them. Lancillotto began the construction of the family residence on the island, which in the 1580s was extended in the Renaissance style by Renato Borromeo. Among their many visitors have been Napoleon Bonaparte, Gustave Flaubert, and Théophile Gautier. To make the most our of your visit, I strongly recomend getting a private guide. We were blessed to have Sandra as our guide, she spoke english and italian. She was really amazing!

Worth the visit! We visited Palazzo Boromeo on our half-day tour of the Borromean islands. We bought a ferry ticket dockside in Stresa for 2 islands (Isola Madre and Isola Pescatore). I really liked this palace for three reasons. 1) It felt lived in and loved by its inhabitants. There were tableaux with furnishings, paintings and statues of men and women dressed in typical aristocratic clothes of the day. It wasn't glamorous or gilded everywhere ~ that kind of opulence is what you'll find on Isola Bella, should you decide to go there. 2) There is an extensive puppet theatre exhibit in a wing of the palace. At least 6 rooms are devoted to the puppets, scenery and costumes from their theatrical productions. I felt this was truly unique and unexpected. 3) The magnificent Cypress from Kashmir. The tree was restored to standing after a struck down during a storm. Also, the botanical gardens are lovely, and the peacocks and pheasants who make their home on the grounds.

Awesome view, if you are in stresa, you have to visit this mountain. Price for the cablecar is 20€, first stop in alpino at 800meters. On a higher level there is mottarone 1400meter. Than you have to take a skilift to the top, the view is truelly amazing. Go over and play those 20€. Be on time, the parking spots at the BASE are filled in no time...

Even though it was rainy, the Mottarone Cable Car was a must-do! Find the ticket building on the waterfront in Stresa and get your tickets. The ride makes a half way stop to change cars. If you get off in Alpino, there is a botanical garden to tour at an extra charge. If you ride to the top there is not much to in the off-season, but the 360-degree view of Stresa and Lake Maggiore going up and down is spectacular. Ride in the part of the car facing the lake for these views. Rides leave about every 10-minutes It is cold and windy at the top so dress for this.

It’s fun to see the animals and be able to pet some of them. The majority of the animals are rescued and not able to live in the wilderness again due to their condition, so they’re taking care of them. The gardens are very beautiful and well taken care of. The bathrooms could have a little update.

I expected better. Great location, unique setting, incredible gardens, marvelous views. Entry ticket fair, however the playground was closed. With a kid, a discount could have been offered, or at least we could have been warned at the ticket booth. The website pictures a place with happy animals free to walk around. The reality is that majority of animals are caged. Was particularly sad to see the Kookaburra, lonely and skinny in a small cage. What is that Australian bird doing there?!? They love having company, but this was all alone. Also the small Wallabies, zebra, cicogne, etc. But the Kookaburra really touch my heart. Lei him free. Really enjoyed our visit here. There is free parking right in front of the park for guests. There is a lot of uphill walking and some stairs so be sure to wear the right shoes. The animals were very cute and a great place to bring children.

Impressive gardens with old stately trees . Disappointing though as the home was closed to the public . A large ' petting zoo ' with baby goats and such keeps children amused but unless you are a parent it's a fair yawn . At €15 each adult it's fairly expensive for what it is though I suspect that later in the year the floral displays may make this a worthwhile expense . Don't visit during school vacation times , the masses of unruly children will ruin any peace and serenity you may be seeking .

Nice place. Loved the farmyard area, especially during feeding! Gardens weren't up to the standard of, say, Villa Taranto, but nevertheless a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. And no ferry needed to get there! Also a few minutes walk from the Love Beach for lunch and a round of mini-golf. Just had reservations about the sizes of some of the enclosures for the birds etc- would have felt happier if they hadn't been there at all....

The ratings may be a bit unfair as this is an alpine garden and I went in June and the flowers were a bit sparse but the views are nice and the garden is pleasant with tranquil music coming from rock like speakers. To get to you need to take the cable car from Stresa to the first station and then it a 10 minutes walk to the gardens .

Love this cafe for breakfast and snacks. Very accommodating of children, good service and great tasting coffee and pastries. We come by here regularly for our morning coffee and brioche. The place is always clean and well organised.

This is a stunning lake, beautiful views from everywhere and the small islands certainly enhance the whole of it. Take a trip around the lake in one of the reasonably priced ferries , enjoy the commentary explaining which celebrities live where etc. We had a couple of wonderful days cruising around here and will hopefully come again another time. Chanced upon this beautiful poster landscape when we are searching for a nearby train ride from Rappenswill in cold white winter. 20mins before arrival we transited to an evergreen autumn vibes which were so inspiring lovely. Strolled down a short path by the lake but stayed long to capture every still bit of the sunshine layers over the cold calm ripples, backed by the majestic alps in snowcaps.
