Trivento 8th September 1961 Traditional Feast of Maiella in Trivento
.
An ancient statue of St. Anna with the Madonna Child comes out of the church at noon and is
carried in procession to the nearby esplanade. On 8 September, the traditional Maiella festival returns to Trivento. It is a typical popular festival in the countryside, about four kilometers from this town, around an old church. The church, the poor country church, has nothing special. There are four smooth and bare walls, with a central plaster altar in bad Baroque taste, which does not appear to be the work of local craftsmen, who have always held in great esteem the art of the chisel and sober constructions. On the other hand, the statue of S.Anna with the child Madonna is valuable, a statue of perfect features, which dates back several centuries and certainly came from Abruzzo, a statue much venerated by this population. Attached to the church is the caretaker's house and in the vicinity an old monastic-type cistern and remains of walls bear witness to the ancient presence of the cloister of the Celestine friars, those friars who with the spirit of the Hermit of Morrone also here, from us, they built their convent seven centuries ago and lived a life of recollection and prayer. The church as it appears today
strengthened, until the 18th century it served as a burial place for wealthy locals, upon payment of a fee to the ecclesiastical authorities, as was customary. The poor before 1870 were buried in the so-called mass grave. The bell, which overlooks the church from the bell tower of no artistic value, bears the date 1321. But let's go back to the Maiella festival on 8 September, a popular country festival, undoubtedly established by the Celestines. A large part of the people takes part in it; everyone takes the opportunity to have a nice picnic. Here there is no shortage of huts made with green branches, where generous wines and flame-cooked goat meat are sold under the very eyes of the buyer; there is no shortage of sellers of walnuts, fine peaches, exquisite grapes, sweet and tasty figs, all fruits of our valleys and also of neighboring villages. Not so long ago it could be said that the festival represented the walnut festival. The boys indulged in the game of nuts with a particular passion. There were no other distractions for them then. There is still the characteristic cock shooting with stones. Here the vigorous and robust young men of the fields distinguish themselves at shooting. The owner of the rooster places the poor beast on the ground, tied to a stake; the shooters were placed at a certain distance. Each hit is permitted upon payment of a certain fee. If the rooster is hit by the stone, the lucky shooter takes possession of it immediately. It's a game that
it requires skill, dexterity and well-trained muscles. People are passionate about the show and the fate of the animals condemned to stoning and so the time passes. At noon, the statue of the Saint emerges from the small church and is carried in procession throughout the surrounding esplanade still
full of hot stubble Just as it was left by the reapers. Men and women participate in it in line
singing prayers to Mary and each carrying a green branch symbol of faith in their hand. There is no shortage of shots from paper bombs, which cause a long echo in the wide valley, which extends up to the
Trigno river.

Maiella
.
richiede abilità, destrezza e muscoli ben allenati.
Vi partecipano uomini e donne in fila
fiume Trigno.
