Another great citadel in Romania and one of the biggest, Alba Carolina has been a meaningful place for Romanians during different times. The place is huge and if you are not prepared to walk half a day you may rent a bike, take the electric minibus or bring your own bike. Inside there are plenty of restaurants, street foods and bazaars to meet all tastes. Suitable for all ages this plece is also a must-see.

Beautiful location! It is ideal for a romantic afternoon walk or a family day trip. A walk back in time full of history. We went and visited both churches and managed to go up in the church tower, but there wasn't that much to see from up-top, it was a good workout, though 😉 You can find a few restaurants both inside the citadel and around it. We decided to relax and have a cold beer inside the citadel and went to a nearby restaurant to eat. Overall, it was a beautiful experience ✨️

This piece of history brings forward the past of what the former lands were back in the times of the romans and before Romania being united by Mihai Viteazu. Very nice place. It serves as the center of the city, with lots of terraces and places that sell food. There are also a lot of things to do like seeing the citadel gates, admiring the architecture, visiting museums about the Great Union of Romania, Roman vestiges and visiting two churches. Also, during the summer, every Saturday and Sunday at 12 you can watch the change of guards between the third and fourth gates.

A few hours tour is not enough time to see all of this citadel. Would recommend a whole day. It's beautiful and well maintained.

Impressive romanic monument with small gothic influences. Originally built in 1004-1009, then rebuilt in the 13th century, it had it's exterior renovated in recent years and is now in an excellent condition. Be sure to bring a jacket as it's always cold inside, but also be sure to catch some of the evening organ concerts. They are worth it.

A very beautiful cathedral, and from what I understand, the oldest in Romania. It'd definitely worth stopping for a short visit. It's free, but there's a small tax if you want to go up to the tower. The climb is not very hard, especially because you can stop on each floor to read more about the history of the place. I really enjoyed the narrow stairs going up to the first floor.

Awesome place to get a coffee and a nice lemonade right inside the Citadel, with beautiful views on both sides of the walls: one gives a view on the inside of the Citadel's City and the other side gives you a beautiful view on an inner garden. And it also houses irrelevant temporary exhibition panels; when I visited it in August 2016, it had an exhibition explaining how to tell fake gold from real (!). Nothing about the political context to the Union, the people behind the event, or its world-wide implications, despite the fact that huge amounts of material exist. A massively missed opportunity to educate people about the history of Romania; all you get is a massive hall with random exhibits, a few fading black-and-white pictures of Romanian peasants and some scattered dusty pottery. Heartbreaking for someone who appreciates and loves Romanian history. Ah, yes: the website of the museum managing the Hall was last updated in 2015!

The tallest Obelisk monument in the area constructed to honor the three heroes of the 1784 revolt of the local "iobags" against the feudal lords"boiers" runing at the time the Transilvanian principality. This prison is kinda cool to explore but you can go inside but the problem is that it's locked and I think it's do to avoid graffiti and waiste. And inside you will the an little window, a seat for those 3 inmates and chip bags. But what I love is the statute on the back.

This museum was just ok to us foreigners. It might have been great if more of the exhibits were written in English. As tourists in Romania, we don’t know the language. There are some artifacts with basic English descriptions on small cards, like a sentence or two, but most of the big displays with Romanian history were undecipherable to us. 😩

I would have rated a bit lower but it seems they are making efforts in improving the old communist curation and bringing a fresh air to the exhibition I would still not bother with it as a foreigner because it, sadly, covers nothing about the glorious years under the Habsburgs, rather it emphasizes the Romanian struggle in Transylvania, the short lived union of 1600 and the Roman archeological finds. It could be interesting for those interested in Roman culture and civilization though the finds are nothing special compared to other such museums. No tourists , has wc ,souvenir shop, 3 levels of historical exhibits (originals ) from the stone age to modern times + info (not all info is translated into english) . Totaly worth it if you are interested in history since it is the center of the citadel , allmost free and usually deserted .

This is called the National Museum of the Union, but it actually has exhibits that go through the entire history of the area, from prehistoric artefacts up to modern times. I really enjoyed the prehistory and antiquity sections, but from then on the explanations felt kind of old and dated, it honestly reminded me of the old communist-style history books I had in school. The tickets could only be paid in cash.

Absolutely beautiful! The waterfall is gorgeous and very refreshing. There is a bridge right at the base where you can stand and take pictures but you also have to possibility to go right under the waterfall. Worth the trip especially since there are other beautiful/cool places to visit in that area.

A very unique waterfall. It is not huge but it offers a lovely view. You can walk a bit and you will see it from the top too. You don’t need hiking shoes. The downside of this is that there is no parking so be prepared to park on the edge of the road but the waterfall is very near so that is and advantage if you have kids or you can’t walk long distances. This museum si simply amazing. A new addition in Alba Iulia that few know about. This was intended to house some of the oldest christian exhibits from the main museum, but when they started renovating the building they found beneath the remains of the three fortresses from Alba Iulia (Apulum, Balgrad and Guylafehervar).
