Gwendal of Verdun Battlefield Tour (Royal Journey France), which booked through TripAdvisor, provided an outstanding WW1 overview, as well as comprehensive, in-depth details about the Verdun battlefield and forts. During the drive to the location, Gwendal also provided an overview of the Champagne Region of France. The Fort Douaumont visit gave keen insight into the static battle within, while also showing the terrain overview, trench warfare, and the moonscape the area became after the artillery shelling. Outstanding visit.

Fort Douaumont is a spectacular site to visit. The outside of the fort, with its cratered landscape and the remnants of its fortified artillery and machine gun emplacements is free to visit. For a very reasonable admission fee, you can also explore the interior of the fort at your own pace with a very informative and interesting audio guide.

Very impressive site near Verdun. Roads are a little bit narrow in that area, but you will find it easily. No problem with parking, also very handicap-friendly place. You can visit undergrounds for fee or walk around and on the top of fort for free. You can also find trenches in near surroundings.

If you like the History of the WW1 Era, Fort Douaumont is a must. I arrived 1 hour earlier as the opening time, so I was alone when I when over the super structure and take a walk (and pictures) without people. The 22nd of April 2022 was a glorious weather day. In 1 hour, you have time to go easy and "ruhig" to take fotographs, to walk quiet and so on. It opens at 10:00 and the 2 ladies there were very nice. I do not speak French, but they helped me in both English and German. Very nice people. Please take your time with the Fort. Get the Audio guide. Dont rush, have a look at the rooms, the guns, the shells, the HISTORY. It is worth it. There are plenty of closed areas (that is why I added not so common pictures), so you can leave your imagination do the rest. It is well worth a visit. I bought a ticket for 2 Forts and the Memorial and the price of it is just very low: 16 Euros!!! And in both of the forts you get a free Audio Guide (French, German and English languages), at lesast until April 2022. So, enjoy the visit... I really did it.

Great place to get your mind around the struggle for Verdun. This fort has a story to tell, and along with the still visible trenches and shell holes outside it is one of determination, sacrifice and death.

We arrived here with clear blue sky, sunshine and no wind. Beautiful and peaceful with only the sound of birds. We walked over and around the fort before going inside. From the outside the fort is a series of huge grass mounds in a very bumpy and broken landscape with stonework, doorways and the rusted metal domes of gun emplacements to hint at what lies underground. Arriving early morning on a late September day, there were very few other visitors and we bought our tickets and went straight inside. The stone corridors, chambers, cobbled street and dormitories form a huge underground labyrinth. Constructed from stone and then covered and reinforced with concrete and soil, the inside of the fort is almost like an underground castle, with stairs to a lower level where there is a 40m deep well and the remains of the hospital. The fort is also a war grave, holding the remains of soldiers who died in accidents (munitions and other explosions) inside the fort. Nature is slowly reclaiming the stonework and turning the fort into a cave with stalactites and stalagmites forming throughout. We also saw bats flying in one area. The mineral deposits cover the ceilings and floors and the washing troughs in the laundry and the mechanisms to move shells and ordnance all have stalactites and stalagmites forming on them. The lighting is very much as it would have been when the fort was occupied during WWI and the changes that have been made to allow visitors today are very minimal. The building tells its own story. The gift shop/ticket office has some nice black and white postcards and a lot of books in many languages. The signs throughout the fort are in French and German and there are laminated handouts in other languages that you can borrow. These guide you through the fort explaining what you see and the route you take. We explored everything thoroughly and took time to understand what we were seeing and we spent just on an hour and a half visiting with an hour of that actually inside. The €5 entry fee was very good value and the staff in the ticket office were very helpful. It is possible to rent audio guides, but we chose not to. For those interested in WWI, the national importance of Verdun for the French or military history in general this place is well worth visiting.

Impressive monument, the whole experience is phenomenal. You get audio guide which supplements the tour tremendously. No need for a guide, unless you like personal attention.....scary perspective of our history...respect and honer for fallen soldiers.

While a fascinating place, I found it a bit disappointing on the inside. The information (on paper, in English) was sparse. Again, amazing location, but they really need to improve their presentation.. The toilet (only on the parking lot) was horrible. I found Fort Troyons much more interesting!

Such a humbling site. It was so interesting to learn about this fort and the inhumane conditions the soldiers endured during WWI in this fort. It is worth the visit. Just to better understand what soldiers went through during this very long battle and also how it shaped the world we live in.

If you are interested in WW1 history this is definitely a place to visit, you will definitely get a great sense of how horrific this battle with huge loss of life on both sides

A fort from the 1st world war, part of many similar places around Verdun. A large underground bunker where one can try to imagine how people must have felt during these darest of times.

Very interesting battlefield location to visit. 100 years later and this Fort is slowly turning into a cave. Great visual of how the Earth will slowly take it back. Was chilly and wet inside from the rainy day outside. Amazing gun turrets to see.

Very interesting site. The fort bears all the marks of the heavy fighting and artillery barrages it endured. When I visited it was very wet inside (November).

Whatever they paid to have this Bad Disneyland ride installed, it was too much. While the staff was very friendly, happy and helpful, the technology is not at all up to the task, and as of this point is no replacement for a self guided tour using old photographs. I spent as much time in pitch darkness as I did with poor images before my eyes. I felt I saw only two galleries the entire tour – those at the end which were actually lighted and used old photographs. To top it off, the “tour” is about 60% more expensive than the other low-tech and more satisfying local forts. One day AR will be the greatest idea for all of these sights. Apparently “one day” is far off.

We were surprised by the virtual reality tour. It was nicely done and provided a unique way to present the history of the citadel. It is cold so bring a jacket. Also, your view/tour of the exterior of the citadel is limited so keep that in mind. Staff was nice and welcoming! Free parking. Overall I can recommend!

Excellent. The citadel of Verdun is a very interesting and symbolic place. Used as barracks and rest areas during the battle, most of the French soldiers who served at Verdun will have passed through the tunnels of the citadel at some point. The initial part of the visit is a virtual reality tour on small railroad cars following the story of a group of French soldiers as they arrive at the citadel. Afterwards you are free to wander through some of the other tunnels making up the museum, on foot. Highly recommended.

Awsome place. Pretty booked out so I'd suggest going there early and strolling around the sweet little Verdun. Theres a beautiful cathedral and the 'palais du libération'.

I think I was expecting something amazing from this museum. I had visited some bunkers and forts before this and so had high hopes. It was €15 for adults. I should mention that the people running the centre were really helpful. The first part of the museum is a viewing of a map and pictures from the Verdun battles. No photography is allpwed. The next part is a ride on a 'ghost train' with a VR headset that tells you the story of a few soldiers. The tunnels are freezing so dress warmly. I has hoped that the tunnels would be reconstructions of the WWI conditions but they were mostly empty and relied on the VR tales. After the 35 minutes on the 'train' I was then hoping for a walk around an amazing reconstructed museum but alas, the rooms were empty aside from the fixtures such as ovens. I can't express how disappointed I was. The next section was back in the visitor centre and a few info boards. I have been to volunteer-restored and run sites that have been so lovingly restored and brought back to life for a much smaller entry fee, that my expectations were huge for this museum. I think the installations must have cost a fortune but I feel that their money could have been way better spent. I wouldn't recommend a visit unless you have a craving for a wobbly train ride and VR that is way too loud. Practical info: Parking is available over the road from the entrance or just down the road on a gravel patch. There are toilets, basic café and gift shop inside. Leave around an hour for the visit on a quiet day or way longer on a busy day as there will no doubt be a queue for a train.

The first thing that impresses you about The Citadel is the size of it. Approaching the visitor entrance on foot allows you to see the walls close up and the construction of these was a colossal undertaking. During the 1914-1918 World War, Verdun (The Citadel) became the symbol of France's stand against Germany. During this conflict equal numbers of French and German soldiers died. Verdun remained in French hands despite the battle being one of the longest during WWI. The visitor experience of The Citadel is from the perspective of three soldiers arriving at The Citadel and then going back to fight again. After buying your ticket (no concessions) for €15 you walk into The Citadel and open a large door to a dark world. Lighting guides you forward to a station where you are given a disposable hair cover and step into a small buggy where you are then equipped with rudimentary VR headsets. The Citadel is like a cave and the ambient temperature is cold so make sure you bring something warm to wear. From this point your exploration of the tunnels in The Citadel is in the guided buggy with audio in your own language and film overlaid (using the VR headset) on the illuminated walls of The Citadel. Sound and film recreate the experience of the soldiers and illustrate what life underground must have been like. The billets, bakery and medical services feature in their experience. The commentary explains details of the importance of the site to France and the recognition and respect paid by the allies at that time. This guided experience takes around 30 minutes and you arrive at another 'station' where you leave the darkness and proceed on foot exploring the mess hall and other tunnels before stepping back out into the sunlit walkway past a restored section or the exterior wall. After a few interactive displays you find yourself at the end of the tour in the gift shop. The Citadel is without question impressive and the human endeavour that has led to its construction cannot be underestimated. To have been here during WWI would have been a respite from the horrors of battle or a life underground supporting others. Whilst the guided tour was interesting and brought the experience of a few here to life, it would have been good to physically walk around more of the tunnels and seen more of the remaining artifacts in place. Overall an interesting place to visit. An experience rather than a museum, probably best as a starting point before visiting other historical sites in the area. Use of technology could be improved as this type of application develops quickly and the AR seems dated. We visited late afternoon (about 16.00) and there were very few people around - just two of us in our buggy (max 5). Check opening times and be aware that coach trips come here so it will get busy on occasions.

2nd time round and its still very good, amazing to think what went on here only 100 years ago. New visitors centre is great and a big improvement.

The stars mean nothing for my rating. We had a three year old with us and that is too young for the tour. The tour involves VR headsets and a minimum of 8 years old. Will return at a later date.

Impressive (permanent) showcase of WW1, told by means of a VR tour through the citadel. As the tour is underground, it's quite cold. Dress up like it's late fall/early winter. Pricing for a family is quite reasonable. Food available is limited to coffee and snacks.

Warning, if you or your kid is autistic or have sensory issues, do not go here. The Virtual Reality headset is awful to wear, it hurt after only a few minutes, and theres a lot of high pitches noises. We had to wait 1,5h before the tour started and then had to stand in line again once inside for roughly 45 minutes, but now in 7°c.. So while the front desk staff was wonderful and very helpful, there's not much to see or do here besides the virtual reality part, and it doesn't seem like you can do that without paying for that. It's also a shame the entire underground part is in complete darkness, you have no sense of how big it actually is. The video itself is good and the English translation is easy to understand, but the bad really overshadowed the good unfortunately.. Save yourself 15€ per person and take a walk around instead, it's a wonderful scenery.

A most impressive augmented-reality presentation of a soldiers life during the great war. It's worth the detour. Expect to be surprized. And put on some warme clothes because it's always 7 degrees celcius underground. Also perfect if you are less mobile. The one hour ride underground is relax, but not suited for claustrophobics or epileptics. No pictutes were taken during the underground ride.

An underground history tour in the citadel in a carriage, complimented by use of hollolense (mixed reality) to bring some of the history to life. A nice experience. Wear warm clothes as it only between 5-10 degrees in temperature.

I would recommend 1.5-2hrs to take it all in. It definitely will hit hard if you are able to watch the videos and walk above and on the “muddy” ground. So many lives lost during this conflict. Don’t miss this location, it will change you.

There were some compelling videos that really showed the immense difficulties faced by soldiers. Clean bathrooms and a small but decent little cafe area to fill your stomach if you wish.

Monument to a myth ? Myth : During an artillery bombardment in June 1916, a trench containing men of the 137th infantry regiment was filled in, burying the men alive whilst they were standing up. Only the bayonets attached to their rifles remained visible. protruding through the soil. As cathedrals go, Notre-Dame de Verdun is generally unremarkable. Parts of it have been destroyed, rebuilt or remodelled since construction began a little over a 1000 years ago. What is remarkable, however, is that any of the cathedral was still standing after the devastation of the battle of Verdun in 1916. Much of the cathedral had to be rebuilt after the Great War, but some of the exterior walls are still scarred by damage from the bombardments which destroyed much of the town.

So I am staying here for 4 days and will update the review everytime anything happens. Its awful. The toilet just stinks very hard and the bathroom is just half broken and dirty. The sink is not properly cleaned. There is no cold water (??) There is no WIFI !! The dinner was ok, there is also a choice for vegetarians. There is only 1 dish to choose from.
