You will find some incredible deals on alpaca ponchos, jewelry, leather, signs, food, okay much anything you can think of, and it's mostly local handmade goods! Dig through the shops and you are bound to find some incredible gems of items! Highly recommend for all your souvenirs and shopping needs. Best part are the upstairs restaurants, delicious made to order food at real budget prices, especially compared to you run off the mill restaurants around town. Worth while stop, and I seem to keep going back!

For English speaking tourists, La Recova is a friendly haven with a good selection of quality handicrafts. You’ll find a small handful of shops have proficiency in English. The prices may be a couple of dollars more than less convenient tourist destinations, but the selection is really good. While on the surface many of the shops may appear to have the same products, look a bit deeper and closer to find some treasures. We found some great bird whistles (you fill them with water, very cool), ocarinas, sweaters, and trompos for the kids. Go a bit deeper and there are some really cool Diaguita style mugs. Papayas are also unique to the region, so if you can, I recommend picking up some artisan candied papayas to bring back home. If you’re hoping to find Diaguita ceramic replicas, you’ll likely not find any here - something you’ll have to travel to one of the towns in the valley for.

Hmmmm, perfect for a souvenir with some treasures to be found but the problem is that every treasure is found in every local. I think that the preserved baboaca is a good price. Even the wool was priced fairly. However, you are left feeling that after the third local there aren't any more to see. Really special wines. I loved the whites because of their very fruity flavours. Their wine has won prizes and and is on the more expensive side. The person running the show (daughter of the owners) speaks good English as well, which is a definite plus for foreigners.

Truly something unique about this place. Mother nature is stunning in the beauty of this earth. This micro climate only exists in this location, and it's situated such that the ocean mist rises and supplies enough water to create this forest. The temperature is a complete escape from the aired dry region it lives in, and the moisture in the air is something unique. Definitely worth a stop! Be sure to purchase your pass online before you venture in as it can only be had online, and there is little service within the park.

The national park is in great condition, it has nice paths for trekking, but at the moment, conaf, the national agency in charge of it, has the most extended path closed. Anyway, the most important one is open, the hydrophilic forest, a 50 mins at slow pace path where you can see by your own the dispute between desertic and forestry flora, this is an unique feature of this place, who is recognized by UNESCO has one of the starlight place to go.

One of the most extraordinary places in Chile and in the world. In the middle of a desertic climate area this park has a tropical atmosphere with most incredible fauna and flora. It is well maintained. Routes are clear and easy to follow and a lot of effort has been put to make it self explanatory with small signs everywhere. Worth spending the whole day.

I liked this park. A neat experience, cool nature, very well maintained and controlled. Well run. The trails were very well manicured, and the rangers were cool. Be aware that US citizens are expected to pay double what locals pay, which is annoying (we don't do that in the US to Chilean's). So took off a star for that. But yea, overall it was a cool experience and worth coming out to. Like all park visits ever, come before noon if you want to beat the crowds; and they do regulate traffic in, so if you show at 1:00pm expect to wait a bit.

At the time of my visit, some rooms in the Museum were being renovated and closed but, for the few I visited, the archeological items (potteries mostly) were spectacular and well lit with a nice museography, only there were too few. The entrance was free and the staff really friendly. So, in the end, this was quite a small museum but it was very much worth visiting. It took me less than twenty minutes to do it and I don't see any reason to skip it unless you are allergic to Museums.

Google has asked me to rate this joint, so here goes. It's an out-of-the-way place - you have to be really dedicated to come here. Travel time from the US is on the order of 20 hours. The food is pretty good for a place that's on a mountain in the desert, but the real reason people come here is the sub-arcsecond seeing. This place's specialty is the 4-meter Blanco telescope, with the Dark Energy Camera mounted at prime focus. Be aware that you'll need a reservation to observe here: the "Time Allocation Committee" is pretty choosey.
