A good Buddhist temple to visit in the city centre. Therefore regular Buddhist teachings to run for those who are interested. Unfortunately that's only for those who speaks Sinhalese. Look at the picture I took in my last visit and you'll see how different it is from other temples.

It’s more of a museum/ personal collection than a temple. It’s still nice to visit and see items they have there. Some quiet zones are there if you’re Buddhist and want to find a corner to pray or make merit.

One of the most beautiful Buddha temple I have ever been to. Can easily spend an hour or two in this serene place. There is a museum of antique with statues and artefacts from around the world where Buddhism is practiced. The whole place is divine and made my mind calm. After I visited this temple there is another one opposite to Court Marriott which is also beautiful. Entrance is free when you show the temple tickets.

It is one of the most beautiful sights in Colombo. The church consists of several small rooms with various sculptures and decorative elements, a museum section. Attached to the church is a souvenir shop made of carved wood that used to be a restaurant. Admission is 400 RPS ($ 2).

Such a great temple that has different influences from other architectures from different countries like China, India and Thailand. The statues were so detailed and it was like the European churches but this in a temple with Buddha statues. Don’t see this in every other countries if you’re from outside of Asia. Definitely worth visit! I paid LKR400 at the door and went early in the morning around 7am and only local people were here. I was the first tourist and had the chance to take so many pictures and videos. The traffic was smooth to get there too because it was before the peak hours. Make sure that you cover your wear or bring something to cover your shoulders and knees before entering the temple.

A place to visit once you are in Colombo. Nice historical places where you can meditate and be thankful to GOD for all the good things that happened in your life. This temple was my fist ever Buddha temple and i was amazed at the statue room and the details and colors inside this room. There are several other things to see too like a small museum and other statues and stupas around the property. There is an entrance fee for foreigners.

One holds the relic, one a museum, a few halls, a Bodhi, and many more Are there to been seen and worshipped. Will need around an hour or more to appreciate all the segments in it.

As a temple - definitely worth seeing. The sort of museum is... funny. Authentic Indian figurines are mixed with toys like Transformers 😂. Overall positive. You'll walk barefooted. Entrance fee is about a 1 USD...

Looks surreal in the city. Feels a bit like china. The sculptures and golden viharas are very beautiful. Concrete elephant was inside. You can take photos of anything anywhere inside. They keep your stuff safe outside, even your helmets. Parking was on the road. Evening lights were great.

A massive Buddhist temple in the middle of the city. Don't be deceived from the outside. The complex is very large inside with plenty to see. Worth the price of admission. Be aware that it's shoes off inside and can be quite dirty. There isn't any proper footwash anywhere, find a nearby tap is the best you can ask for. If you buy a ticket here, make sure you go visit the smaller temple floating on the riverside down the road which is included in the price of admission.

Many thanks to our tour guide who was nice enough to take us to this temple even though it was not part of our travel itenary. Truly amazed and mesmerized with everything they have inside the temple. U need about half a day to see everything in it. We spend about an hour inside the temple It's more of a mesuem and the collection is just amazing. It should be a must visit if you are in Colombo. Appropriate attire is mandatory. You are given a wrap around skirt if you are wearing short clothes :)

Gangaramaya temple is located near the famous lake Beira right in the center of the city in Colombo. This is one of the most ancient temples in the city and has the smallest statue of Buddha (termed as number 13) on the left hand side of the entrance in the main building. The temple has a mix of old and new architecture and cultural essence and is typically crowded by the tourists as it's in the middle of the main hub and busy area.

Visiting Gangaramaya Temple was a serene experience. The expansive compound surpassed my expectations, and the tranquil atmosphere around the sacred tree, where devotees pray, was truly calming. Remember to remove your shoes before entering the temple. Inside, a fascinating museum-like corner houses a variety of Buddhist deity statues, adding depth to the spiritual journey.

A very interesting Buddhist temple right in the center of Colombo in a quiet and peaceful location. The facility is large and spacious. There are many beautiful rooms, impressive sculptures, beautiful decorations and numerous Buddhist exhibits to see. Shoes must be removed before entry. You can enter the temple barefoot or with socks. Men and women should not dress revealingly. Clothing on the legs that is at least knee length. The arms may be exposed. An excellent place to visit!

Beautiful place, more of a museum than a temple. There is a charge of 400 LKR for foreigners. The temple is primarily a Buddhist temple with thousands of statues of lord Buddha but you can find some other Hindu gods as well. The place is very well managed and huge collection of various antique pieces. A must see for tourists.

Serene Temple when there's not a tour happening. If a tour is going through, wait it out and sit in the peace in the garden and bathe in good energy. Long history here, doubles as a museum. 400 lkr per person for foreigners. They have lockers if you need and can provide wraps if you're wearing shorts.

It is more of a museum rather than a holistic place. It doesn't have the same religious vibes as other temples. It is worth checking. You pay 400 rupees to keep your shoes outside. Remember, you need to cover yourself. It is preferable to have a guide to explain things around. I went without a guide as no-one offered the same which didn't give the best experience (in my opinion)

Interesting hanging bridge, lots of street food to try (it looks interesting but I did not like it despite the fact I adore sea food). You may observe raising and lowering of the flag everyday, sometimes with ceremonials. The TV tower looking like lotus flower may be observed from Galle Face as well.

Very peaceful please but very crowded . every morning and evening we can watch beautiful sunrise and sunset but the best view is sunset. Every day we can feel different because the People. I really love how it has changed ever since my last visit to this place in 2015. For the better. I agree with some of the reviews stating that we need to keep this place clean. This is because everyone has the responsibility to keep it clean, such that they can enjoy it the way they want to.🇱🇰😀

A superb place to unwind with your fam/friends. You have a lot of stalls around the green urban park off the coast (which I personally found overpriced and underwhelming) to grab a bite. Also it has a variety of fancy Kites floating around (including a Spiderman kite). The coast is clean but has a great amount of traction in terms of crowd so you better find your spot and enjoy your time.

Popular for evening strolls and sunset viewing, this place holds a special place in busy Colombo city. Crowded mostly in weekends. Also famous for food stalls and kite flying. Or you can just sit on a bench or grass and watch sunsetting into the sea.

A large area to enjoy your time with family and friends. You can see breathtaking views towards the Indian Ocean. You can exercise, fly kites. A safe place for all. Toilet facilities are also available. There is a street food area and parking lots. I don't recommend the food here and you have to pay for your parking too. There are also modern shopping centers near this place. It is a very beautiful place to watch the sunset. There is no charge to walk and enter the area.

You can spend hours here without any idea. Very beautiful all around and located at a very prime location. Just behind this is the Colombo City Centre Mall where you can visit. Also parliament building and other important buildings in the area as well. Don't forget to get on the ramp that leads a bit into the ocean and click some pictures.

Just be sure if you really wanna try from those stalls and food is just sitting in the case sometimes without cover in open air.

Not at all crowded when I visited on a Saturday. Don't know why. This place is so special to all of us who were born and raised around Colombo. Used to our hangout spot. Perfect place to watch the sunset. The beach is not walkable now due to the Port city project. However, this place will always be special.

It is a great place to visit in evening with family. This is the most valuable beach in Colombo area. Many restaurants and hotels available for food and logging. In weekends it is bit crowded. There is a parking issue in weekends.

In the evening you can see a nice sunset. There are many restaurants and Hotels here. Generally the waves here are not rough. You can swim in the sea. There is a lifeguard service and a beach police. Easily accessible by train. There is a generally clean environment. Not very clean. A very crowded beach on holidays and weekends.

A great public beach fwhich is free for anyone to visit. Ample space so can go in groups and be distant from others. Many come here to play cricket, swim, clect shells, play rugger and even workout in the mornings. So far the best. Only issue is parking your car, but if you get a good lane then your in luck best reach the location by public transport. There are tons of places to eat, chill, swim even and even BYOB and pay only corkage. So you and your friends are bound to have a great time.

Mount Lavinia beach is stunning and it is one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka. The sunset in the evening is very beautiful. Good for a day out with family or friends. Usually this place gets crowded. It is located near Mount Lavinia Railway Station and easy to visit.

My most favourite beach in Colombo to go to. Relaxing but it does get pretty crowded. You do have multiple good restaurants and bars around the beach. Finding parking would be a hassle. The beach itself, view and peace you get is amazing. You can swim in specific areas and there are life guards. It's pretty relaxing in the evening. Weekend tend to get super crowded and noiser due to all the places playing music and partying. Nonetheless nothing beats a walk down the beach. You can walk all the from mount Lavinia to the end of Dehiwela on the beach which is about 25mins fast paced walk.

I have visited the beach at morning. It was pleasant at the time. Peoples are doing jogging, walking etc.. Its kind of peaceful but the train will go 10 mins once. If you see in that way its awesome beach. You can witness beauty of sea with different type of sands.

Daytime on weekdays there are only like a handful of people. Mornings obviously sunny unlike evenings which is cooler, but either way very calming. Some sketchy people walked by but that was about it. Timing was off but anyhow enjoyed the view without any disturbances. The water is not that clear as you may expect, you may find some plastic bags and trash both in water and on shoreline. The water is super warm, the waves are nice. I've heard that there are some crocodiles swimming around and eating tourists (unconfirmed) 😅

One of the best beach side in Sri Lanka. Beautiful place. You can feel freedom. You don't want to buy tickets to visit here and it is not far from Colombo. If you like to stay there you can find a hotel easy.

Good Sandy beach you can easily access in colombo. Very crowded in the evenings and weekends. The main problem i see here is the parking space. There is not much parking space near the entrance. Otherwise it's a great place to enjoy with your loved ones. In the evenings, you can swim at the beach for only 6p.m. due to tidy waves. There are more than 5 life guards and 2 policemen in that area. Which makes you feel a little bit safer. I don't recommend buying water bottles from the small shops near the beach. They taste and smell very different. Can recommend the beach to anyone 😃😃

One of the best beaches which is in proximity to Colombo . Suitable to bathe yet the beach is somewhat narrow. There are a variety of restaurants along the railway track. And it is a romantic place for couples for take photos. It is a tourism attraction place. But the place has some garbages which are come with sea water. Mount Lavinia Beach is a picturesque stretch of coastline located in Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia, Sri Lanka. It's known for its golden sands, clear waters, and stunning sunsets. Popular among locals and tourists alike, it offers opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying beachside dining at nearby restaurants. The historic Mount Lavinia Hotel, located along the beach, adds to its charm, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking relaxation and natural beauty.

The beach is so long and very close to the rail tracks. A train passes by once around every 3-10minutes. Stay vigilant while crossing to enter the beach. The sunset here is brilliant for photography (the photos I posted are shot on a redmi 9c phone so don't mind the quality) Don't forget to grab some sea shells from the shore as souvenirs. And stay near to cost guards' range of sight. There's a couple of mini hotels / restaurants placed in some area of the beach. I was glad to not witness/be victim of any theft. But as a cause of prevention, I recommend keep your belongings very close. Don't leave them out of your sight even for a minute. Place would be an easy 5 star if its entire area is kept clean. As some areas may have corpses of crabs , plastics, etc. I don't think water sources found on the "shore line" is okay to touch.

Super crowded, casual beach. It might be good for local or ppl who r new to beaches. As we’ve come from Maldives, it wasn’t that impressive but overall, it ain’t that bad but the time we went there, it was hella crowded.

Been here several times before (prior to say 5 years ago), but during my recent visit I notied black substance on the beach. Researched on the Internet but couldn't find anything conclusive. Is this some form of contamination, possibly the residues from 2019 oil spill? If so, isnt it unhealthy? Locals were swimming and playing in this with no concerns. Curious to know what it is?

The beach itself is huge with nice sands and restaurants, some decent and others not so much but all good for a drink! Been here for weeks and like the area.

Good place, many interesting exhibits. But unfortunately, more than half of the halls are now closed. The museum building was built by the British in the late 19th century, and it still looks beautiful and monumental. There is also a beautiful small courtyard near the museum where you can relax from the heat and appreciate the architecture of the museum. There is a cafeteria near the museum, as well as another museum - the Museum of Natural History. For foreigners, the ticket costs 1200 RS. If you want to visit the second museum as well, it is better to buy a special combo ticket(around 1500RS), so as not to buy two tickets separately. Also, neither the museum nor the cafe had water, so it is better to buy it in advance.

As the current exhibitions were less interesting to us (mostly pictures, photos), we only looked at the exterior, the garden and the souvenir shop in the nearby building. The latter is cheaper than most TUKK-TUKK drivers take you to, and fixed prices provide a good basis for future purchases. The park around the building is being developed, with sculptures erected around the garden areas.

As good as any other national museum. The old colonial building is noteworthy. The artifacts and displays are seggragated as per era and geographical place in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰, into 15 different halls. It can take between 1 to 3 hrs to cover, depending on your interest levels. Worth visiting. From Neolithic to present day, all aspects are displayed.

A spot worth visiting if you are travelling and want to get to know the country even more! Coming from the Netherlands it is very interesting to see old Dutch items in this museum too. Well explained and interesting exhibits.

it is a very good place to know Sri Lanka, but national natural history meusem is not worth of visiting because most of items are just pictures, not real.

Great place visit in your free times. Parking is available. There are 2 parts of the museum. Natural History and Sri Lanka History. You have to buy tickets for each section. Price is 60LKR. It will take around 4 hours to explore the entire museum in detail. Otherwise it will take around 2 hours. Souvenir shop is also there, that you can buy souvenirs and books for reasonable price. There is a canteen you can buy meals and drinks. Overall great experience and highly recommended to visit there around 10AM to 12PM.

Things to keep in mind- 1- they have a combined ticket for both the National museum & natural history museum. It is economic to buy only if u have enough time in your hand & you are genuinely interested in museums. 2- avid knowledge seekers may take more than 3 hrs time here. So plan accordingly. 3- there is an art gallery outside but near by this campus. While we inquired ,it was closed due to renovation. But ask once & try to visit of possible. 4- the near by road had many oil painting sellers. You can buy one. 5- last but not the least, go thru the museum & have some knowledge. Just don't roam around only for instagrammable pics.

As for practical details, we paid our entrance fee in cash. It's good to note that card payment availability wasn't clear, so carrying cash might be more convenient. Overall, this museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in exploring the rich tapestry of history and art. It's an educational and engaging experience for all ages.

Great presentation With different sculptures from all parts of Sri Lanka. The ticket is 1200 rupees. They also have the luggage drop off service which is free. The biggest minus is the unavailability of AC inside the museum I could barely enjoy the pictures and history because of the heat.

Dutch hospital, by its name really was a dutch hospital. The government was kind enough to preserve the structure and open cafes in the same area. World Trade centre lies opposite to it and is at stones throw distance from the sea. There are multiple cafes serving tea, juices , alcohol and food. Live music is also played here. Unfortunately the cafes do not reduce their individual music volume when live music is being played. I myself went over to one cafe and requested them to turn down their volume so we could hear the live music. A good place to spend a evening.

It's a perfect blend of history and modernity. The beautifully maintained heritage building offers a variety of excellent restaurants and shops. The common area in the middle provides a relaxing space, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere. A great atmosphere and location. Excellent, lovely, very efficient and multi tasking staff. A wide selection of beers - craft and cask. Proper cider.. What more do you want? Yes, it can be packed but that is because it's such a great pub and the staff will get you served quicker than any other pub I know.

Not much here except for restaurants, bars and a souvenir shop. Go to say you've been there, but don't expect too much unless you're in the mood for food/drink. Perhaps it comes alive at night!

Dutch Hospital is one of the oldest buildings in Colombo (since 1681). It was built as an infirmary for the Dutch who ruled the Country for more than 150 years. Since 2011, it has served as a shopping and dining precinct. The colonial dutch architecture is the zenith of the location and it is the home of some of Sri Lanka's best dining restaurants.

Dutch Hospital is a shopping Mall that is situated right in the center of what has become Colombo's business district. It has several good restaurants that cater to the many tourists who stay in the hotels of the area and to the office workers working of the district.

On Friday, April 5th, my group of three friends and I visited the Tap House by RnR. We had heard the service was poor, but wanted to see for ourselves. Upon arrival, we encountered a sizable crowd. However, a bar attendant promptly seated us within a minute of requesting a table. Shortly after, a different attendant approached and informed us the table was reserved, despite no visible signage indicating as such. We then relocated to another area, only to be told that space was also reserved. Feeling frustrated by the multiple displacements, we decided to stay at the Tap House. The attendant who had asked us to move apologized, but did not resolve the issue. We proceeded to order cocktails, but after an hour, they had still not arrived. When we raised this concern, another attendant apologized but did not provide the drinks. Ultimately, we received what was described as a "screwdriver," but it tasted predominantly of orange juice with very little vodka (screwdriver must have 50mil vodka clearly this had less than that we couldn’t even taste the vodka all we got was a orange juice ). This was disappointing, as a proper screwdriver should have a more balanced flavor profile. As travel agents, we were dismayed by the flawed service and questionable drink preparation. This experience does not meet the standards we would expect, and we cannot recommend the Tap House by RnR to our clients based on this visit.

This is situated in an open and green area with wide roads. There’s no ticket to visit this. Busy at weekends. It requires some renovation. Architecture is beautiful, people come here with family to hangout in their free time. Suppose to be iconic but there wasn’t any security except for 1-2 guards directing some traffic.

Definitely worth a visit! The architecture is truly amazing, very fine details carved into pillars and overall surrounded by beauty. it was built to commemorate the independence of Sri Lanka in 1948. It has depictions of Lord buddhas life on the ceilings. It it kept clean and seems like a spot where locals come to chill out. Near is the arcade which has many western shops, also nice architecture. The arcade was previously a mental hospital and transformed into a very modern and clean space for locals and tourists to enjoy :)

Independence Square is a beautifully landscaped public square, historical monument and tourist attraction that is situated in the center of Colombo. To get the full extent of the beauty of this location, I walked around the monument and went exploring the wooded area and the reflection pools. For those interested in a deeper look at the history of the independence movement in Sri-Lanka, there's a small museum underneath the monument.

Cool place to hang out. The square has a nice feeling of openess. I reached here on a hot day around noon. There was a nice breeze blowing and since the pavilion is at a slight height with open sides it was perfect. The pavilion is made of stone which adds to the cooling effect. Lots of open space, water bodies and greenery around. Fww people were sketching various scenes here and it was a very plesant 1 hour visit. The independence arcade shopping complex is next door but looked quite empty and deserted. The place has significant historical interest. The top panels have various carving depicting what appears to be scenes from Lord Buddhas life. There are stone sculputures of lions around the periphery which give the pavilion a nice aesthetic.

The morning and evening walks at Independence Square Colombo is my favorite of all the walking tracks available. It is full of greenery and you can take different routes every time. You’ve got architecture to admire, Colombo skies, beautiful trees and overall a beautiful view. You get a free gym facility maintained by the government. A few healthy food stalls that offer herbal porridge, king coconut and even snacks to fulfill your thirst and hunger. Children can ride their bikes or roller skate/ blade around the area. Their is a special cycle track and you can find a little shop that hires bicycles for a very reasonable hourly rate. A nice place to visit for both foreigners and locals.

It's sad to see a place like this. No proper lighting, the fountain is not working. This is such a great place it has to be maintained very well as there are the major tourist attractions but left like an old unwanted place. Sad to see the government or local bodies are not showing interest to attract tourists to boost the economy.

Nice to look around a site that clearly important in Sri Lanka. Not too much to see. A shame some of the fountains were not on. The most memorable part was just across the street in a tree the fruit bats which were amazing to see.

I was there for a bicycle race event which is organised to help the patients who are suffering from bone cancer. Atmosphere is nice early in the morning. Very calm place. When the bicycle race is finished there, then it became as rush place.

It's the lung of Colombo. A good place to jog, walk, and entertain yourself and family. Landscaping is nice. Birds and little friendly animals are everywhere. Many snacks shops and juice bars are available. A good place to relax

It's a great park to walk, to run and cycle in the heart of Colombo. There is also a play area for kids, and lots of fun activities. It can get crowded on weekends and public holidays, but quite peaceful in the mornings. It's also safe. There's plenty of public parking around it.

It is public park which is nicely maintained due to close proximity to the town hall and Sri Lankan White House. It is a big park to be fair and you can relax here for sometime. There are many small food stalls in the park if you want a quick bite to eat.

A wide park with a diverse range of plants and trees. There are even chipmunks, squirrels, ducks running around, and you can watch bats. We were approached by a man who pretended to be a former park gardener, I don't know if this is true, but we enjoyed everything he showed us - cinnamon trees, Buddha flower, bats, palm trees and everything. Asked for 10 dollars after that but it was worth it. There is also a children's playground on the territory of the park, it is noticeably worn, but interesting for children. It's unusual to have to take off your shoes in a playground like this.

Best peaceful place to relax in the busiest Colombo city. No entry fee is required to visit in the park but there are some paid contents available here and there. You can walk,Jog and cycling around this park on the allocated trail path. Morning and evening in this park covered with crowds. You can buy ice cream and food items inside. Best nature friendly place. The are few animals kept here to engage people to come here. I Appreciate the M.C to keep this place clean.

Formerly known as the Victoria Park this is situated in Cinnamon Gardens Colombo in the heart of the city. Built by the British rulers in the 1800's it's the oldest and largest of it's kind in the city. Named originally Victoria Park in memory of Queen Victoria by the British was renamed in 1958 as the Viharamahadevi Park after Independence. This is a highly scenic park with an open air theater, cafes, a children's park, jogging and walking paths. Notable attractions are the Buddha statue, Cenotaph War Memorial and the BAC Jet Provost. Highly recommend for relaxation.

Within the park, you can find several notable attractions, including a large Buddha statue, children's play area and a open air theater for events. Popular spot for picnics, leisurely strolls, and enjoying nature . Typically open to the public untill 11pm and no entrance fee.

One of the nicest place even to vibe alone. People do come to spend their leisure time with their extended families. Can enjoy nature in a less noise polluted environment. As the Colombo National Museum is near, you can visit there too. There are instant hand drawn drawings sold along outside of the park. Buy them if interested.

Very nice temple. You may observe all the rituals while being there. The only problem for tourists is that there are no English translations there (except "toilet", which is good), everything is written in local language and alphabet. Remember - if someone brings you flowers, you cannot take them. You just put your hands on them. Also you can buy flowers nearby (in the same territory) and put them near the statues of Gods (there are many there). If you put the flowers, you have to hack the stems and put only the flowers' blossoms. Also you may take a colorful pitch and water the sacred tree. Don't forget to take off your shoes before entering the area of the temple (near the gates, just look when the locals do that). But it's worth to take socks with you as the sand may be hot, also your feet will stay clean.

This was a very beautiful temple. We visited during a religious ceremony so it was a bit packed. This is recommended if you are in Colombo. The surrounding area though is a bit run down with beggars roaming around, so expect that while waiting for your taxi.

We went there on Sunday and they had some kind of religious ceremony we couldn’t do much or see much but it is just temples after all. Also you have to take out your shows and walk on the sand holding your shoes with you.

My first visit here, very beautiful and peaceful place. The Bodhi tree is wonderfully large and sprawling. The geometric ceiling patterns are great to stare up at. The statues and ornaments are great. Easy for parking and to get too from car park.

Really good place to have a quality time with family. As I remember there are lot of animals here but now most of them are not there. I'm not very satisfied with the living condition of the animals. Place is nice and well maintained but as I saw animal cages are not maintain well. Few years back I remember this place is packed with lot of animals but now you only see few animals. I saw people feeding animals and no one there to stop them. They have installed swings and electric car rides for children but it's not the reason why people visit here.

Facilities has been improved compared to my previous visit which was several years ago. Specially Washroom Facilities. Though there are less number of animals there in the zoo compared to few years back. We Cannot Aspect Or Facilitate 100% In A Zoo What’s An Animal Need However Most of animals now has more space in their cages. We are Enjoyed a lot in the zoo. Not only entertaining, but also educating Specially Newly Innovated Museum Which Is Most Useful For school students and zoological students. Which is Missing By Most of The visitors (almost 1st Floor of Aquarium) I have never been to the museum at the zoo and this time around, we got the chance. And I gotta say it's quite nice. It has lots of preserved bodies, and skeletons as well as several scale models. Restaurants inside the zoo have improved Food tastes much better than it used to. And they are always full with people. Prices are same To Our side reasonable Restaurant’s. Tickets were priced at 200/=for adults & 50/= Below 12 Years This is for locals only. Ticket prices for foreigners are Bit Higher. Most Important is now Days the have innovated lots of new things which like -Feeding the elephant (Bucker Of Fruit for 250/=) -Feeding the giraffe (Some Grass for 250/=) -Improved Children Park. Etc…. Only missing thing is Elephants Show, Though We watched Sea-lion Show. Highly recommend for a family to visit in their weekends.

I visited the National Zoological Garden in Dehiwala recently, and I must say it's a great place for kids and education. The zoo has a wide variety of animals, and we had a great time viewing them all. The educational aspect of the zoo was fascinating, and it helped us learn a lot about the animal kingdom. However, the only issue we faced was the cleanliness of the zoo. The zoo should improve its cleanliness by ensuring that all areas are spotless. While this issue was minor, it's something that the zoo administration should address to provide visitors with the best possible experience. Despite the cleanliness issue, our visit to the National Zoological Garden was enjoyable, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great educational and entertaining experience.

Apart from the fact that on the net it says that the entrance costs 3000 rupees, that is 10$ for foreigners, but when you get to the entrance, you find out that it actually costs 17.7$, the zoo is interesting and has a lot of animals. I liked the tigers the most, but also the giraffe, the rhinoceros and many others. For children, it is extremely interesting, but also for adults. It is worth visiting, preferably during the week, on the weekend it is crowded.

They are restructuring the cages, environment and giving more space to animals. It's not enough but for the time being, it's satisfying. Enjoyed a lot in the zoo. Not only entertaining, but also educating. Staff is very friendly and they guided in the tour. Highly recommend for a family to visit in their weekends.

Wonderful experience walking around the zoo, we didn't expect it to be big, but it turned out to be huge! You can easily spend up to 5 or 6 hours here! Saw a few animals that I wasn't expecting to see here, but it was a pleasant surprise.

As it’s the first and quick accessible zoo in Colombo it’s has various range of Birds, animals local breeds as well as foreign breeds . But the number of animals has down drastically than last time visit which was few year back. As we know it’s hard to maintain such huge area and animals respected authorities should do something to maintain property and grab some good international tourist!!! Worth the place to spend time with kids especially if they are animal lovers.

Well, this place is not like it used to be. There aren't that many animals and several cages are empty. This must be due to COVID or something. We visited on 18th of December 2021, so this might not be the case when you visit. However, the place wasn't short on visitors, especially since it was closed for months because of COVID. And we noticed that there were some renovations going on. They were building a new structure for lions as well. And the children park was full of children. They had even arranged a Santa to meet and hand out gifts to the children. I have never been to the museum at the zoo and this time around, we got the chance. And I gotta say it's quite nice. It has lots of preserved bodies, and skeletons as well as several scale models. And the restaurants inside the zoo have improved drastically. Food tastes much better than it used to. And they are always full with people. Prices are somewhat reasonable. Staff is really friendly. However, your orders might get delayed for a long time. This might be due to the high demand. Also, if you visit the zoo, please contact them and find out whether there are elephant and other shows on that day. There weren't any, when we visited; maybe because it was a poya day? Tickets were priced at 110 LKR for adults and 30 LKR for children. This is for locals only. Ticket prices for foreigners might be different. All in all, it was a good day and my niece was really happy that she got to see all the animals she loves.

Very nice experience! So clean. Good maintenance. They have clean bathrooms and rest benches placed everywhere. There's a little play area for children too. The lush greenery and the secluded areas for aquarium, reptiles, museum are commendable. THe elephant show starts at exact 4.30. lasts for js 15 minutes. Good variety of animals too. I don't regret visiting at all!!!

The entrance fee is very fair. It is good to see animals around the world. But animals looked poorly treated, with very little life in their eyes. Animals looked like they were trapped inside small cages. But there is a nice aquarium and a museum. Please think more about animals. They need more attention and to be treated. Really enjoyed the time in the zoo. Entrance fee was 250lkr for a local adult, information they provided outside of the habitats are very informative, the zoo had loads of land animals and birds. They also have a aquarium with small sharks, stingrays and other fresh water and salt water fish. And they also have a really good restaurant inside which has tasty food. Visiting DEHIWALA ZOO was an amazing experience! The variety of animals was impressive, and the staff were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. The zoo's wide spaces were refreshing. However, during rainy weather, some areas became slippery and muddy, making it slightly challenging to navigate. Inside the restaurant, I found the food prices to be rather high. It would be beneficial if the management could consider controlling the prices for a more affordable dining experience. Moreover, the service in the main canteen could be improved, as some waiter seemed unfamiliar with proper customer service etiquette. Despite these areas for improvement, I still enjoyed my time at the zoo and would recommend it for a fun family outing!

It was a good place. I found many varieties of animals, local and foreign. It was like a stress buster for me. If felt like getting relief. The only thing I found as negative is the animals. They are very old and they care takers didn't replace them with new ones. The animals are not that much active. The birds are active and beautiful ❤️

It's sad to see the animals in these situations and I don't think the zoo is adequately funded or even if they are generating revenue very little seems to be put into improving the facilities or taking care of the animals. Saying this I can imagine this is the only place children can learn about animals and see them live even though they are a shell of what they would be like in the wild. Wished they cared more about the animals - there are some honest people like Thilak who is the caretaker and trainer who has trained chimpanzees to write their name and eat off a table without spilling food. They should be given more opportunities as they genuinely care about the zoo but have no way to improve things. Government of SL step up.

On 28th January 2024, we visited the zoo. It’s really an awesome place to visit for kids. But the only problem is that they’re not maintaining it well, most of those buildings, and roads are broken. As well as the cages are not cleaned well.

This is situated in an open and green area with wide roads. There’s no ticket to visit this. Busy at weekends. It requires some renovation. Architecture is beautiful, people come here with family to hangout in their free time. Suppose to be iconic but there wasn’t any security except for 1-2 guards directing some traffic.

Definitely worth a visit! The architecture is truly amazing, very fine details carved into pillars and overall surrounded by beauty. it was built to commemorate the independence of Sri Lanka in 1948. It has depictions of Lord buddhas life on the ceilings. It it kept clean and seems like a spot where locals come to chill out. Near is the arcade which has many western shops, also nice architecture. The arcade was previously a mental hospital and transformed into a very modern and clean space for locals and tourists to enjoy :)

Independence Square is a beautifully landscaped public square, historical monument and tourist attraction that is situated in the center of Colombo. To get the full extent of the beauty of this location, I walked around the monument and went exploring the wooded area and the reflection pools. For those interested in a deeper look at the history of the independence movement in Sri-Lanka, there's a small museum underneath the monument.

Cool place to hang out. The square has a nice feeling of openess. I reached here on a hot day around noon. There was a nice breeze blowing and since the pavilion is at a slight height with open sides it was perfect. The pavilion is made of stone which adds to the cooling effect. Lots of open space, water bodies and greenery around. Fww people were sketching various scenes here and it was a very plesant 1 hour visit. The independence arcade shopping complex is next door but looked quite empty and deserted. The place has significant historical interest. The top panels have various carving depicting what appears to be scenes from Lord Buddhas life. There are stone sculputures of lions around the periphery which give the pavilion a nice aesthetic.

The morning and evening walks at Independence Square Colombo is my favorite of all the walking tracks available. It is full of greenery and you can take different routes every time. You’ve got architecture to admire, Colombo skies, beautiful trees and overall a beautiful view. You get a free gym facility maintained by the government. A few healthy food stalls that offer herbal porridge, king coconut and even snacks to fulfill your thirst and hunger. Children can ride their bikes or roller skate/ blade around the area. Their is a special cycle track and you can find a little shop that hires bicycles for a very reasonable hourly rate. A nice place to visit for both foreigners and locals.

It's sad to see a place like this. No proper lighting, the fountain is not working. This is such a great place it has to be maintained very well as there are the major tourist attractions but left like an old unwanted place. Sad to see the government or local bodies are not showing interest to attract tourists to boost the economy.

Nice to look around a site that clearly important in Sri Lanka. Not too much to see. A shame some of the fountains were not on. The most memorable part was just across the street in a tree the fruit bats which were amazing to see.

I was there for a bicycle race event which is organised to help the patients who are suffering from bone cancer. Atmosphere is nice early in the morning. Very calm place. When the bicycle race is finished there, then it became as rush place.

Major railway station in Sri Lanka... Trains are available for most of the main departures... Public rest rooms and canteens are available..but both are not too much clean.. Nice and kind receptionist... Station is too much crowded at most of the times..

Came to Fort Railway Station in Colombo to pick up our tickets a day prior to our trip to Kandy. Pick up is at number seventeen. We stood in the normal ticket line but the gentleman advised us to collect around the corner at #17. Office was cool with ac and not much of a wait. We were also able to collect our tickets from Kandy to Ella. There is a place to eat inside at minimal cost while you wait for the train as well as bathrooms nearby. Our train surprisingly left only three minutes after the scheduled time.

I came here to travel from Colombo to Kandy. After I couldn’t buy tickets online I went to the train station and made the mistake of entering the tourist information centre which is a tour company separate from the train station… I mentioned I wanted to buy tickets it was all great until he made the phone call to see if the tickets are available. He said they will call back he recommended some stuff to do in Sri Lanka kept pushing and pushing for me to rent a car and driver from him to take us around. I mentioned about the tickets and he called again and told me he can get me tickets only if I rent a car. Don’t waste your time in the tourist information center. Walk past it and go straight to door number 17 and ask them for your ticket. Mr Linton is not an honest person. Overall the train journey was smooth once I got my tickets and the second class seats to Kandy was a really pleasant journey. I would of given the station a 5 start if I hadn’t wasted an hour of my time been pressured to rent a driver when I clearly just wanted train tickets

My experience at the train station was okay, but it could have been better. The station was crowded, with fewer seats available than the number of passengers. This often meant standing for the duration of the journey, which was less than ideal. I suggest that the authorities consider improving the scheduling and organization of trains to accommodate more passengers and reduce delays. By making public transportation more efficient and accessible, it would encourage more people in Sri Lanka to choose it over private transportation, ultimately benefiting both commuters and the environment.

Beautiful Buddhist temple situated in the lake. The golden Buddha statues are nice. Famous among tourists. Can watch birds also in the lake. Good place to visit for a calm and relaxing time.

Peaceful location where contains number of beautiful Buddhist statues. Very clam and relaxed place floating on Berie lake. This location is maintained by Gangarama temple and ideal place to worship.

Nice. We bought tickets here and used the same at gangaramayan temple. Ticket price is 400lkr. No queue. You can go there and buy it.

Sima Malakaya is situated in the Beira Lake. Mostly people visit to site seeing around Gangarama and for meditation. This serene temple is connected to the mainland by floating bridges. Original temple is old over 100 years but heard that it is redesigned in later 19th century.

It's a beautiful temple with great views of the water. I visited this temple twice, once in the evening and once during the day. I was not charged any fee when I visited it in the evening but was charged 400 srilankan rupees when I visited in the morning. It's a beautiful temple, you will also see the tree that was planted using the branch of the original tree under which buddha attained enlightenment.

A beautiful place! The views are amazing from here. Its even known as a floating temple. There’s a central temple which connects to small ones on either sides.

Wonderful temple set on a lake. Surroundings are nice and there a mall right across the street in case you need to cool down and get some drinks/food. Great mix of modernity and traditions.

Nice place to worship and also to have great sightseeing of Colombo town. Located right under the CCC Shopping mall. It was nice place to visit and the guy at the entrance was super helpful for us. He protected all our stuff during the stay there.

Despite being located along a busy road, I felt calm in this place as this is such a unique temple where you can view the Colombo skyline further into the city centre, yet at the same time, have a blissful feeling as you wander around the temple.

n the middle of chaotic greater Colombo, on the emerald waters of the Beira Lake, is the island temple of Seema Malaka. Starkly contrasting the nearby gaudy and tourist-hogged Gangarama temple, the Seema Malakaya offers a serene and simple respite in the urban mess. The Seema Malaka is perhaps best known for its minimalist architecture designed by Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka’s most famous architect and the much celebrated “father of tropical modernism.” Originally, almost 120 years ago, the Seema Malaka formed an integral part of the Gangarama temple where Buddhist monks were ordained.

Gangarama Sima Malaka, one of Colombo's oldest Buddhist temples, offers a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Visiting around 7:20 am, I found it serene and uncrowded, with no entry fee. The temple boasts beautiful Buddha statues and offers picturesque views of the city reflected in the water. Remember to dress modestly before entering. It's a peaceful haven well worth a visit, especially after exploring Gangarama Maha Vihara.

This temple was not busy in the morning when I went there around 7.20am and it was free. It was very peaceful and you should definitely visit this temple after visiting the Gangarama Maha Vihara. The temple has many nice buddha statues and definitely a good place to take lots of pictures and videos. It has a good view of the city with the reflection on the water too. Please make sure you wear or bring something that covers your shoulders and knees before entering the temple.

This is one of the beautiful places in the busiest city in Sri Lanka. Because it is situated in the heart of Colombo. Though it is not related with Therawada Buddhist Culture, its also an amazing icon to our contry. We went there on 16th December 2023.

Sri Lanka is Theravada Buddhism. The temple have designed by Mr. Geoffrey Bawa; ジェフリー・バワ who is one of the most famous as Sri Lankan Architect. I heard that his architecture is also used as a reference by Aman resorts. Even today, architecture students come from all over the world to study his work, and tours are said to be available.

This part of a larger temple across the road. If you buy the ticket at the large temple, you can access this for free. This is a smaller temple area, just 1 main building, will take you 5-10 mins tops. There is a small floating store to the right which sells nice souvenirs.

Very pretty Buddhist temple on the water. There is free admission for this site and they have a public shoe rack. It's a very small site, and will only take about 10-15min to walk around and take lots of pictures.

A quick visit as it was closed, the outside very colourful and I really appreciated the fine details in a lot of the work , saw the original carriage in a shed

We went there around 19:00. A spiritual ceremony was happening there with a fascinating music. We had chills. The cost is just 100 rupees, nothing for the experience. They let us watch all the ritual. A must-visit.

There are a lot of colorful paintings inside this temple. A lot of scenes with small details. Hindu religion and culture, this temple is must visit place in Colombo.

We stopped at the Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam as we were on our way out of Colombo on Day 4, and I'm glad we did. It was one of the best sights in the city, in my books. It was offbeat, had no entry fees, and was incredibly colourful (thanks to its South Indian influence) - and these are just a few of the things I loved about it. It is actually the oldest temple in Colombo, dating back 200 years. One temple is dedicated to the god Ganesha and the other to god Shiva. Tamil temples have fascinating architecture- those tall Gopuram’s have years of history. And lord shiva has been generous that I could have his darshan. If you are shiv bhakt & in Colombo do visit this temple. There are other deities as well in temple - I couldn’t take my eyes off at Radha Krishna idol. Couldn’t take photos of the antique idols .

This will be a wonderful experience if you are visiting a Hindu temple for the first time. The temple is spacious, beautifully designed, colorful and has places of honor for several deities. Pleasant atmosphere, although located in the heart of the city, it is cut off from the surrounding world (located between train lines). Dress appropriately for the temple, take off your shoes and bring flowers if possible.

I would recommend for Tamil Hindu's as this temple mainly dedicated to God Ganapathi.Looks very old & peaceful place in the middle of busy Colombo. A must visit place.
