I had the chance to live and work in Kodiak for six months. Fort Abercrombie was on of the first places I went hiking and it quickly became one of my favorite places in the world, so far. There’s amazing tidepooling (I got to see octopuses a couple different times, as well as a couple different kinds of nudibranches, sea stars and anemones). The trails are beautiful and varied, with moss-draped trees, Lake Gertrude, ocean vistas, a wide variety of wildflowers Spring through summer, blueberries and salmon berries in the summer, an abundance of fungi in late summer. It’s a popular place but I never felt crowded there.

Fifty shades of green. The park was stunning, with lush green moss covering the trees whilst the mist settled around us! As it had been raining, everything was sparkling and green! We were impressed with the well-built and maintained walking tracks that took you lakeside and to the coastline for stunning views.

Great place to visit. Wonderful views, nice hiking trails, public restrooms, easy parking.

State park within easy 10 minutes from downtown, well kept walking trails around a deep, quiet stocked lake Gertrude, thru verdant forests, and along a rocky driftwood strewn shore. There is a daily use fee 5$ a day or 50$ for the season available on line. Very dog friendly with the occasional rabbit and bear sightings. If your worried about it stop at Walmart on the way and buy some bear spray.

Beautiful historic Park with the ability to take a cold plunge!

Staff are very friendly. Trails are clearly marked and sights are incredible. Its well worth the $5 entrance fee.

Not a bad place to go for some local beer. I'm not a big craft beer guy but the stuff they had was decent. The owner is very helpful and nice. My dad and brother seemed to like it. Seems to be a big local area to hit up. They had a food truck outside too that would bring your food in for you. I think it could use a bit more seating but that wasn't an issue for us.

Excellent beer and friendly staff. The vibe in here is also excellent, with lots of fishing related gear decorating the place. There is also some nice outdoor seating. I went here a number of times while salmon seining--definitely recommend.

The beer is great, friendly staff, and patrons. Highly recommended. Food truck outside Million Recipes makes this a must go Kodiak experience.

What a local jewel. It's actually a family style brewery, where dogs and kids are allowed. I'm not a beer drinker but I enjoyed the ginger beer (non-alcoholic) & tried the spruce tip wine beer. The owner even gave us a tour of the property!

A very good microbrewery. Most beers served in 16oz glasses. Some stronger beers like an imperial steam were on tap. All were clean and fresh. Nothing really light, nothing too dark or too happy either. A good variety of styles. Interesting decor including a beer cab collection and a growler collection. Nice sunny outdoor area. Plenty of room inside. Owner was friendly and busy working. Staff is usually multitasking between serving cleaning and brewing. I think there were 7 beers on tap. They also had housemate vodka which I didn't have time to try.

5 stars for service and atmosphere and a few of my favorite brews. That being said, I dont have much micro brew experience. I know all of our beer tenders and alot of our locals enjoy a pint or 2 after work most days. 2 PINT MAX. ITS GREAT! Sometimes too noisy but avoid "HAPPY HOUR" and afternoons are peaceful and weekends vary. This is a great spot for a short social with friends and pooches ( yes, dogs allowed on a leash and good behavior) and little ones too ( no leash, but well behaved and with parents always) 🙂. Enjoy a sample if your not sure. Like something and dont want to hang, get a growler to go or a "medicine bottle".T shirts, hoodies and souvenir glasses and other swag. You'll have to stop in and see. You may even admire/ purchase artwork from any one of local talented artists. Maybe even say hi to me. Or check out those colorful sunrises

Great beer, selection, and service. They're in my top three for breweries. Kodiak Island Brewery is a brewery that skillfully explores new and unique brews, on top of having a well rounded selection of common styles. Coming from brewery rich Colorado, it's always refreshing to find a brewery that doesn't build themselves completely on only having 20 different types of IPA's as to hide a lack of originality and flavor behind a high IBU. Mind you, Kodiak Island does have IPA's and other beers to provide the high IBU for hop heads, but those beers all still included delightful flavors and aftertaste in conjunction with the bitterness. None of their beers tasted watered down or boring, and I couldn't find one there I didn't like, as hard as I tried. In short, if you go to Kodiak and you like beer: don't skip this place. You'll be glad you went. My only qualm is that they only distribute on the island of Kodiak, leaving the rest of us high and dry until we revisit.

Great little brewery with a nice patio in downtown Kodak. We were in town 4 days and we came back 4 times. Try the mule on tap and don’t miss the Bloody Mary!

This museum is small but packs a lot of interesting exhibits and information in. The gift shop it's also very worthwhile. Definitely worth a visit.

Alutiiq Museum - Preserve, Explore, Share Small museum with archaeological artifacts, natural history displays, and contemporary art. The staff is helpful, friendly and knowledgeable regarding the museum and surrounding area. I really enjoyed learning about the Alutiiq people, viewing the large grey whale skeleton and the contemporary painting of a Kodiak bear.

A great place to learn about Alutiiq culture and heritage. Gift shop has local Native handicrafts at a good price!

I'm not someone who lives museums and especially to spend time reading each exhibit but I loved this place! Read everything, was amazed and my interest was peaked. So glad we stopped in for what turned out to be a longer visit than we expected. And free admission in December was quite a gift. Thank you!!

As someone who had never previously been to Kodiak Island nor who knew nothing about the Alutiiq people, this museum was incredible. It offered a glimpse on the history of the Alutiiq people, their customs, and their life today. I found the history of the petroglyphs extremely fascinating. Their gift shop also offers plenty of items made by local Alutiiq artisans. This place is definitely a must if you find yourself in Kodiak.

I love visiting the Alutiiq Museum. So many things to see and explore in a small space. Knowledgable staff and activities for all ages. Artwork and jewelry from local artisans as well as homemade soaps, creams and salves. A must see if visiting our beautiful Island. If your local then come see what is new.

There’s also a beautiful collection of Alutiiq handwoven baskets that simply can’t be missed while you’re in Kodiak. Don’t forget to take a selfie with the legendary Kodiak half bear, either!

Excellent! You will learn so much from a short visit. The displays are Wildlife and Ecology driven with many interactive features. You can even listen to a simulated Mother Kodiak Bear's heartbeat in the den. The space includes a full 36ft complete Grey Whale skeleton. Maps and pamphlets, including an island bird list available at the information desk. We also watched 12 minute film about the Kodiak National Refuge. Gift shop showcases local authors and artists too!

Nice small place for kids and adults alike. Staff are helpful and welcoming every time I go. Thanks for the wonderful visit!

A beautiful church where the work that God started through St Herman of Alaska continues on to this day.

This is my ancestral Church that was brought to my Ancestors by St. Andrew the Apostle to the Russians, from the Russians to the Alaskan natives and America. This is were it began in Alaska. The Orthodox Church is the true Apostolic Church. I hope and pray the we will be able to spread the good news of His Resurrection to all peoples here in Alaska and throughout America. The Orthodox Church welcomes Everyone, it is for all people and all races. For in the Church there is neither Greek nor Jew, male or female,because all are one in Christ. Amen.

I went to the pilgrimage to honor St. Hermsn of Alaska. I had an incredible experience. The people are friendly, the power of God was present and the church and music was beautiful.

In the center of Kodiak City, the church is a remnant of the island's Russian heritage, built in 1805. The church is quite pretty and the ceremony inside it was something I'll never forget, as it was quite beautiful.

One of the best examples of beautiful iconography on their iconostas, in my opinion. And St. Herman's relics!

Outstanding nature trails. you will not hike this area in one day. pick a trail and go.

Trails are clear and it provides a good cardio workout. Family and dog friendly. Great views and at low tide in some areas you can cross to another small island and more trails. Trash cans provided at a couple areas and benches along the way for restingand taking in the views.

We enjoyed birding through this area and watching the light filter through the trees! We saw waterfowl, grosbeaks, chickadees, creepers, eagles, ravens, a kingfisher, and other species you find in the forest and/or near the beach. We also heard some Red-breasted Nuthatches and Varied Thrushes. The wind was hitting the other side of Near Island pretty good, but this side had been nice and calm!

This an excellent place for peaceful nature walks!

It had been quite a few years since I had dined here so we were all looking forward to it. Well long story short it took nearly two hours to get our food which was two burgers and some fried shrimp. That's completely unacceptable. Especially for nearly a $100 meal. On the plus side the beer was great and they did move us from the cold deck to the inside when they could. But a 2hr wait with no sort of compensation or anything but a verbal "sorry" will prevent me from eating there again. Sure I'll go for beers but that's about it. Edit: Fortunately I did leave a tip equivalent to the service recieved. In the restaurant business you work as a team and at some point the servers were failed by their team members. I'd recommend hiring more staff as they do work hard and the issue seems to be fundamental from the top down.

Hands down the best restaurant and brewery on the entire island. The owner spent time to talk to me and make sure everything was perfect. I had the blackened salmon and it was without a doubt the best seafood I’ve had in years. I will make it a point to come here on a regular basis

08/19/2023: Pit stop for lunch before heading to the spaceport and Fossil Beach. Really great menu options. Ordered Halibut cheeks and filet. Very satisfied. Staff was friendly. Clean and open setting.

Excellent food in a very relaxed atmosphere. And if you can snag one of the chairs on the deck with a great view of the mountains, it's even better. Note this is definitely a local's place, so you may wait or be shut out without a reservation - but chill with one of their excellent beers and relax, and if you can get a seat it will be worth it. We had great halibut and went back twice within a week in late August 2021. Best food on Kodiak island!

Went to restaurant with family because we had heard such good things. The view is great and the food tastes delicious. Unfortunately, service was terrible that doesn’t make the drive out worth it. Was bummed that it didn’t go well and we were not the only ones in the restaurant. Took 45 minutes ti sit down with a reservation, missing food from order, and kid’s order was burned. Wasn’t checked on at all during meal. Halibut was very good, wish it was worth coming back for!

Made a reservation for 2 to have brunch on a Sunday. When we showed up, the place was half-full. Nobody helped us so we sat by the window, a waitress told that we can’t seat there… why? “It’s reserved!” Don’t we have a reservation? We got moved without much explanation. Bunch of waiting and many attitudes later we finally got our meal. Cold and mediocre. We tried to rectify but we just got more attitudes. They brought us the check instead of an easy replacement of a couple of food items. 2+ hours later we paid and left to go find a place to eat. Did I see some other review about ‘tips’ and ‘respect for servers’ response from this establishment? I agree!!! But I didn’t leave a tip, you don’t deserve my money or my respect. I wouldn’t eat here again even if it was free.

Definitely the best restaurant I went to in Kodiak in the week I visited. A local recommended it and I was hesitant to make the long drive, but it was absolutely worth it. The beer is good, and the herb crusted halibut was fantastic! The space has a great view, and all the workers were friendly.

Awesome food and service! We did not stay in the cabins but enjoyed the restaurant! Great food and bar choices! Would absolutely recommend this being a go to place on the island.

Worth a shot. Had a rough visit awhile back ago, but the owner who is always present, had asked us to give them a second shot and they did not disappoint. the Bacon Wrapped Halibut bites were truly great, and were only made better with the dijon sauce. Their Children's menu is smaller than most other restaurants, but the food is great, and the children loved it. Service was fast and attentive. With a small batch onsite brewery, they can offer great IPA and many other variety that any craft beer connoisseur would enjoy. The distance from town makes for a great drive on this beautiful island, and you are sure to see some wildlife on the way, and the view from your seat will beat anything in town. This place is worth your time and you will not be disappointed. My many thanks to the staff and owner, you are truly providing first class food and service. Also, the Chocolate Lava Cake, was the family favorite!

Recently visited Kodiak Island in Alaska and fell in love with it. Visited the St. Herman Theological Seminary Chapel inside and out, as well as the Russian Orthodox Church. If you like icons, this will be heaven for you. So much beautiful artwork, it is worth a visit even if you are not a religious person. Spend time exploring the village. It was a great experience for me.

I was in the seminary building when I learned of Met Jonah's election,, having spent a month at St Michaels Skete on Spruce Island. By Fr Tucker's intersession, who I have known for 20 years, I was offered a room at the seminary for a few days. It was a joyous day for many. I ate my meals at Monk's Rock Cafe and McDonalds.The normal monastic services are quite moving. The mystery of the constant cycles of prayer shows It's fruits here, dispite our unworthyness. Their hours were comforting and do uplift dispite ourselves. The OCA is in dire straits, with spiritual corruption in high places and fierce men not sparing the flock having entered is apparently the situation confronting it. This Word is Absolute Moral Authority of Jesus Christ, Love the Lord thy God, and serve Him alone. Live by His Word and by bread, Do not tempt God. Obey this Vision spoken by the Christ to address the conflict of evil and the Only Good One, the Father.
