Decided to visit as we were walking past and were pleasantly surprised. Beautiful building with a guided tour and without giving any spoilers away, the tour was extremely informative and fun. Lots of history and one of the world's most beautiful ceilings Would recommend it to everyone. Paid admission though, seems like a theme for everything in San Jose.

An absolutely beautiful building and right in the center plaza. The paintings are stunning and it was cool being able to see the restoration process. Definitely worth the price to go inside. Tour was about 45 minutes. Our guide seemed a little newer and not as confident with all of the info, but did a great job handling people who didn’t listen very well. It would be nice if the touring schedule was more easily accessible and if there was an easier way to buy tickets. The box office was only open for 20 minutes before the tour and there was a long line for purchasing for the tour but also shows; we almost missed our tour time.

One of our most beautiful and iconic buildings ever built. This National Theater is without a doubt a national treasure that holds the past trapped within its walls. It was built on the Oligarquía Cafetalera era, to be more precise by the lower class. The ones in power, were the owners of the coffee plantations, the provided a small percentage of money to build this master piece, the biggest part was provided by the lower classes via taxes. The richest people did not want to share the floor with the poorest ones, so a third floor was built with exterior separate entrances to those lower classes. The rich people did not know that the best acoustic and view of the orchestra was being enjoyed by the ones on the isolated floor with wooden pews. The vast majority of sculptures and paintings were done by Italian artists. In fact there is only one sculpture inside the lobby area which was built by a Costa Rican artist. It depicts a woman with and infant on her laps representing misery. He wanted to remind the rich that the lower classes were the ones who build that jewel. I strongly recommend everyone to visit this magnificent building.

Beautiful place. Amazing history. The chairs can be removed so the floor can be raised to stage level in 8 hours using a lot of manual labor to provide a ballroom. Presidential box in the middle of 2nd tier has a private restroom. That's real 24-karat gold gilding. Would love to see a performance here.

Beautiful building. Obviously cannot compete with all the old buildings we have in Europe, but it was pretty and great to see nevertheless.

An excellent tour conducted in English by a wonderful guide called Monica ( I think). A really informative and lively presentation with a few surprises! Well worth doing to see the interior of this ornate institution. Lasts about 45 mins - 1 hour.

I read about this theater in the Lonely Planet guide which promised it would be an excellent tour, and it was! The theater is grand and gives a glimpse into the culture and history of the area. The knowledgeable tour guide and the clever surprise made it fun and fascinating. Please note that English tours are given at 1 and 4 o’clock while Spanish tours are given at 2 and 3 o’clock. We had people in our group from Algeria, France, China, and California, so it was extra fun. This was well worth the time and the money.

Very nice theater and a real attraction! Tickets for the different language tours can be purchased directly on the left side of the theater.

Beautiful place to visit. The tours are really nice. My only negative complaint is that the tour guide (female 6/18) was not nice to the locals and super friendly to the expats (specially Europeans and Americans). Her English was okay and it felt like she was drill in the locals to speak in English when she herself had a lot of room for growth. The make guide was hilarious and super friendly.

A must see! It's gorgeous and has so much history. We were fortunate enough to have a couple of actors as our guides. They were hilarious and informative. I got so many beautiful pictures

I was here on a food tour of city that included this theater because it was on the route. Its a very nice structure, and i like the story behind one of the sculptures (the one on the right, mother and baby). The artists defiance in past. Was only in lobby and looking for 5 min, but very nice theater.'' Like this review below if the info helps

Beautiful Theatre. Must to see.

I felt that while the museum was lovely, it was a little overpriced for tourists. There are three levels - the basement is the gold, the second level has a geography exhibit, and the main level currently has an exhibit about coins. I've been to other gold museums in Latin America and this one was relatively similar, though there were quite a lot of unique pieces that i admit i had never seen in other similar museums. The geographical exhibit was interesting but can be skipped through relatively quickly (i did appreciate all the signage in English). The coins exhibit will only be interesting to you if you're into the history of coins. Personally i liked it but did find it a little repetitive. Overall - good activity to do if you find yourself in downtown San Jose with some free time to kill but not necessarily a must see.

Enjoyed our visit here, so many fascinating exhibits presented well, and the building itself is quite interesting architecturally. Bit of a queue to get in as we fit such behind a couple of big local student groups, but other than that bit very busy at all (apart from the currency exhibition on the top floor which had a couple of tour groups in). Very interesting to learn some of the culture, as well as the history of the local currency, well worth a visit. Open bags aren't permitted, but there are free lockers on entry to put them in if required.

What a stunning museum! Large spacious galleries with artefacts beautifully presented. The gold art work was very thin, delicate and some very tiny ! Over 3 floors this museum really captures the essence of the role of gold in pre-Columbian history. I particularly adored the tiny figurines which were so delicately moulded. Great location right next to the theatre. Very easy to find !

It was ok. We did find it more interesting than the jade museum.

8800 CRC well spent. Lots of fascinating history about the people who used to live in the region of what's now Costa Rica, many centuries ago. There's also some beautiful art on display by Faba, as well as the history of the Costa Rican currency, which predates what is currently in place. The toilet facilities are clean and staff are friendly.

This museum was on a recommended list for thing to do in San José and it did not disappoint. The museum is now in an underground building rather than the older building just next door. They provide lockers for backpacks and larger bags. A small purse and phone are okay. Start by going ask the way to the bottom floor and work your way up. The detail that was able to be achieved in the pieces is breath taking. The section on the colones at the end was super interesting! Don't look past it.

If you like seeing ancient gold artifacts, you would really love the place. Though I feel the artifacts, there were too few in representing the ancient civilization of the original Costa 🇨🇷 settlers.

This museum has wonderful displays of gold artifacts and jewelry. Throughout the exhibit, there are touch screen displays that enhance the learning experience and explain the intricacies and really give you an appreciation of this fascinating culture. A must see while in San Jose Costa Rica.

Great museum. A lot about the indigenous people but the gold work was exceptional. Felt the lighting could have been better, lots of reflections in the pics which I found annoying.

Talk about a fascinating time. If your interests lie in history, you definitely will not be disappointed. A happy mixture of history /art, this museum definitely brings a lot to the table! From the history of the pre-columbian people's religious views, down to the cultural influences from Mayan and Aztec cultures on the natives, this museum covers a wide swath of information. The design of the place is also interesting, as you enter into an underground vault-like area to look at the pieces. There are also multiple floors of different displays so you definitely get your money's worth! I recommend!!

Fantastic place to check out!! The museum was absolutely wonderful to walk around. It was inexpensive and you could spend the whole day there. The staff was super friendly and the butterflies were the best part. The art was breathtaking and there were so many different things to look at. They had the history of Costa Rica, lots of art work, and even the original jail cells. Absolutely rich in history and a fun place to spend a few hours. AC was a plus!

Beautiful museum that has a great history of CR. We went around the afternoon until closing, recommendations were for 2-2.5hrs but we didn't finish in that time. This was one of our last stops in CR after exploring, learned a lot of history on CR that isn't so regularly found. Well worth the time and money if you're in San Jose and want to learn on CR history.

Not large, but nice variety of exhibits. If you stop to read all the material (English and Spanish) you get a good appreciation for the history of Costa Rica from pre-Columbian period through the independence of the country. Butterfly exhibit at the beginning is a fun start, the grounds are calm and beautiful.

Very central location. Great museum with a lot of history and images - archeological finds, artifacts from Costa Rica's development. Moves from ancient civilizations to present day, very nicely done. Man at front ticket booth was very kind and definitely easy on the eyes. Good intro to the museum!

I really enjoyed the museum. The building has a very interesting history and there's a lot of respect for the story of the indigenous peoples of Costa Rica and the conquest by the conquistadors. Lots to learn and see, and really knowledgeable and friendly staff. The butterfly garden was a nice surprise as well.

A large museum with a wide selection of history up to the modern day. I particularly liked the ancient 3-legged stool like stone sculptures. It really ties in with the ones in the Jade Museum. But I would like to give both museums some advice. There is a steady stream of visitors but no decent gift shops. They could really improve their revenue with some tasteful small reproductions. It would need to be able to fit in suitcases. Start small and see what sells. I'm thinking maybe some jade pendant necklaces or something on the theme of stone spheres. Not too expensive maybe 20 to 30 $. Maybe do a survey of visitors to ask what they would buy.

Amazing museum! So much to see and learn. We were there two hours and I think we saw everything. Don't forget to look at the architecture itself! Beautiful building!🥰 👉Definitely bring water with you as there are no water fountains or cafés on site.

Very informative, starts from the beginning (pre-Columbus history) to the present day. Good information regarding the whole of America, not only Costa Rica. Must visit when going to San José. Entry is also cheap!

Excellent range of exhibits and information to help deepen knowledge of Costa Ricsn history. The building is the former army barracks - no longer needed after Costa Rica disbanded the army in 1949. We spent about 2 hours here - would be good to be able to use your ticket to return later the same day as it’s hard to take in all the information. Loved the butterfly information as we entered.

Great variety of information. Very informative and inclusive for English speaking tourists. Highly recommend getting a tour guide for bigger groups.

Interesting museum to visit, particularly explaining the rich history behind Costa Rica. Would recommend visiting for at least a couple of hours to really get a good time to see everything.

A varied museum including a butterfly room (with no butterflies when we visited), a more traditional history museum, a small natural history section, and the preserved commander's house. Some of the temporary exhibits are in Spanish only, but the rest is in English and Spanish. The main courtyard, built on the roof, is nice to relax in. There is free WiFi and toilets within the museum. We spent around an hour here.

This place is so amazing and we learned so much about Costa Rican history. Little did we know Spaniards were so cruel towards the indigenous people back in the days. The museum also has butterfly garden with probably thousands of butterflies flying all over. Highly recommend it if you have children.

This museum is fantastic. The grounds surrounding it are spectacular (although sometimes the people in the park outside can seem sorta sketchy). You can see the Legislative Assembly building from the front door and there's a fantastic park across the street. I especially liked the statues and modern art out front-- even the bike rack is artistic. The inside of the museum is impressive as well.

Excellent displays that explain the history and culture of Costa Rica and attempt to respect the indigenous population Latin America. The butterfly conservatory and history of the barracks, abolition of the army and nice city views make it worth while visiting. The really should number the displays and provide a recommended path of touring the facility.

Beautiful location with a lot of history. There are a lot of things to see in this museum and has many different areas. Make sure to plan a few hours out of your day if you will visit here. Staff were very friendly and very informative.

Full of Costa Rican Rich history and explain a lot of the historical events in the country is a really good place for kids to learn about history through the years in the country and they have a lot of interactive places! They have temporary exibits as well. they have a beautiful butterfly garden and the view from the top building is amazing as well the whole tour didn't take more than an hour and a half you can take a little bit longer if you stop by and read through everything we just wanted to see the other museums they are around the area as well.

Today, we did a little more extensive tour of San Jose. This Museum is a treasure! The National Museum of Costa Rica invites you to learn about the cultural and natural history of Costa Ricans, from pre-Columbian times to the present. Its exhibition rooms show the varied collections in the fields of national history, archeology and natural history, which for 135 years has been the oldest in the country. It holds temporary exhibitions on artistic and cultural themes and has a varied agenda of activities throughout the year. The Museum is located in an emblematic building, declared Historical Architectural Heritage and symbol of the abolition of the army in Costa Rica. According to the United Nations, Costa Rica had an estimated population of 5,153,957 people as of 2021. White and Mestizos make up 83.4% of the population, 7% are black people (including mixed race), 2.4% Amerindians, 0.2% Chinese and 7% other/none. In 2010, just under 3% of the population was of African descent. These are called Afro-Costa Ricans or West Indians and are English-speaking descendants of 19th-century black Jamaican immigrant workers. Another 1% is composed of those of Chinese origin, and less than 1% are West Asian, mainly of Lebanese descent but also Palestinians. The 2011 Census provided the following data: whites and mestizos make up 83.4% of the population, 7% are black people (including mixed race), 2.4% Amerindians, 0.2% Chinese, and 7% other/none. There is also a community of North American retirees from the United States and Canada, followed by fairly large numbers of European Union expatriates (chiefly Scandinavians and from Germany) come to retire as well, and Australians. Immigration to Costa Rica made up 9% of the population in 2012. Interesting museum focused on Costa Rica's history in the past few centuries. A great place to go if you want to learn about the adversities, resilience and subsequent growth the Costa Rican people faced since the Spanish conquests and more recently from the different wars waged in Central America. Their history is testament to the resolve of great people and the willingness to put the violence of the past to rest.

This mesuem had more in it than I first realized. I would have definitely loved a collection 2-4x this size. The butterflies were a nice addition.

Without a doubt one of the best museums in Latin America (trust me I’ve been to almost all of them). The national museum beautifully captures in modern exhibits and a state of the art museum the history and culture of the country. If you only have time for 1 museum this is it. It’s worth every dollar and includes a butterfly sanctuary (those with Lepidopterophobia beware!). The museum should take you about 1.5 hours to see it all.

It wasn't crowded at all, but we went early in the day. The top floor had very few explanations of the exhibits. A couple of the temporary exhibits were only in Spanish, which I read and explained to my 10 yr old. Worth at least an hour of your time!

I was surprised how well this 5 storey museum presented their huge collection! On the 5th floor there’s the largest collection of precolombian ceramics I have ever seen. I took so many pictures as I found the art so inspirational. The building itself I found really aesthetically pleasing too. Well worth the visit. Not just jade but so much more.

Very repetitive and not very well curated. $16 each for Americans, $5 each if you have a Costa Rican student ID. 60% pottery of all nomenclatures, 20% art exhibit of Salvador Dali (who was one weird dude), 20% jade in various formats. Was interesting the first 30min but there’s a lot of historical context lacking. Also not interactive in the least bit. That said, better than sitting at home for $5.

The museum is more about digital and other modern exhibits and pottery than about jade.

This is a modern museum with backlit displays and underlit raised floors. There is only one floor dedicated to jade. The other four floors contain many ceramics and carved stone “metates” from burial sites. The Jade work found in Costa Rica is not as intricate as that from the same era in Asia. The top floor contains hundreds of items still being researched by the museum. There are many explanations accompanying the displays that detail daily life of the indigenous peoples. We were unable to get the audioguide to work. I feel that this museum is very expensive for foreigners (unjustly so). $16 per person.

New and well constructed museum with a focus on pottery and stoneworks, exploring the different roles and evolution of such through the different eras of Costa Rica's long history. Well preserved and extensive collection.

This 5 floor museum was built to preserve artifacts containing jade and clay dating back to a pre-columbian era. Each floor has it's own theme and writeup. I encourage you to read about what you're looking at because it's fascinating to learn about the significance of Jade and how it was used as a symbol of power and status, usually worn by chiefs and shaman. You'll see beautifully detailed clay pots and if you go to floor 5 you'll see a massive ceramic collection This society also created rolling stamps that they would apply plant extracts and clay onto and roll it onto the skin to apply tattoos. The pre-colombian society would participate in funerary rituals where they would bury jade jewelry with the deceased. They would also carve heads out of stone. During this period, decapitating rival's symbolised power. You can also find musical artifacts like flutes and maracas. I personally think it's a great way to get a look into the past and I recommend a visit.

A very attractive museum with five floors of exhibits. Although I enjoyed my visit, I felt that 1) the price for foreigners was very steep, 2) much of the pottery lacked labels to give background information about the objects, and 3) the name of the museum is a bit misleading, as only one room out of the five floors contained jade. Most of the museum is dedicated to pottery. Still worth a visit, if you know what to expect.

Great place to visit if you are interested about the Jade in history and how it was used and the role it played in many different points in humanity. Very interesting museum to visit. Has many floors separating the different points in history of Jade and its importance to all the different tribes. Plan to spend a few hours in this place as there is a lot of information to learn.

Inside this ugly brutalist building is an excellent museum that displays not only their extensive Jade collection but the history of Costa Rican culture. Highly recommend.

Wow! What a great and beautiful museum! The building’s exterior is beautiful, unique and ultra-modern. I must say we were surprisingly amazed…one of the best museums we have ever been to… so glad we went. Five floors filled with a vast and enormous collection of artifacts. Not only jade, but also many ceramics and stone. Many unique ocarinas to see. The word “jade” might lead a person to think this place has primarily jade artifacts, but definitely not so. I agree with another reviewer here that this is perhaps the best museum in Costa Rica. Definitely worth the cost of admission.

Didn't go inside, they lost me at the entree price of 16 USD. No youth or volunteer discount, only student cards. It looks pretty nice from the lobby and outside, high quality modern building. But listen, if you want people to learn about your culture you shouldn't charge them over 3 times what the local people pay. 10 would have been acceptable.

This place was one of the coolest places I went to during my trip! First off there was AC which is great! There were so many different exhibits and wonderful things to look at. The museum was spacious and even with a good amount of people walking around it didn’t feel crowded at all. There was such a wide variety of stuff to look at, you could really spend all day there. It was about $6 a ticket and totally worth it. We spent about three hours there but you could have spent even more time.

Came in on a Sunday afternoon, and there was no wait. There's not much in the way of Jade items, just mostly local history.

Very nice park with everything that you could ask for. They have fields for playing football, soccer, baseball and volleyball. Additionally there's lots of trails for running and riding your bike. There's also a couple playgrounds for kids. On the weekends you can sit there and watch several baseball games and soccer games going on with the locals. There's also a couple bathrooms that cost about 300 CRC.

Do you need to feed the benches where we can sit at its dangerous to sit on the picnic table and other places as well but generally the park is a good trail to walk all around and it’s fun to have nature inside the city

A large park in the middle of the town. I enjoyed seeing a clean and green park with different options to do recreational activities.

Definitely a park for everyone. Sports, strolling, jogging, picnicking, etc. It's a beautiful, spacious, place that is safe and clean. On weekends It's filled with families enjoying the CR sunshine and exercise enthusiasts alike. Fun for everyone, free, well-groomed, and quiet.

Such a beautiful park to walk or run in the mornings. There are some police in place in some parts of the park. There are also some occasional trash you would see around.

I visit this park almost daily when I am in San Jose. Clean and full of trees and birds. It gets a little noisy around rush hour but if you hang in the area of the old picnic tables it's very peaceful. Check out the free airport art museum on the far south side of the park. Lots of interesting art.

This is a very large park. The lakes there have been drained; there is no water in them. There are many trees, walking paths, football (soccer) fields and a large stadium. There were not many people there when we visited on a weekday morning. It looks a little unkept.

Great park to walk/run for exercise or simply to enjoy the peace and quiet within San Jose. There are several sculptures throughout the park along with open areas for kids to play.

There is nothing cool about this park if you want to go for a walk, lakes are dry and no flowers at all anywhere ugly few architecture pieces, I'm here in the end of February, there are still many kinds of flowers that bloom at this time for this cliamate, also too many really fast byciclists that scare you and yell at you sometimes. If you want to take a photo for Instagram, just go to any farm near you, it will look the same. A 10percent a33ed park, hot even half a33ed. Shouldn't be called "a park" The air isn't great either, there are highways on all sides, a really disappointing experience

This is a very nice place to go with family, friends, loved ones, and everyone in between! Entrance is free, and it is pet friendly - you're only encouraged to be careful with their behavior and dispose of their waste. Overall, very clean and in very good condition!

It took us a couple of days to explore just half of the park, but the experience was still amazing. We watched the sun set and walked around many of the attractions and cool artwork for the majority of the time we were there. Great place for people of all ages to hang out, play, work out, or relax.

This park is lovely, a great place to practice many different sports or spend family time. The trees in the park are all native species, making it a good place for bird watching right in the middle of the city. There are multiple places to get a good coffee nearby. Very safe during day time, but dangerous after dark.

Great place to do exercise in and breath fresh air. Would definitely recommend the walking trails, where even when raining, there's many trees to keep you dry. And there's eating spots around and inside the park, with many tables or green spaces to eat in the park at. There's also public restrooms, with a cost of less than $1.

It has lots of quite similar stuff on sale in small stalls, under cover. Quite friendly and we weren’t too hassled. Some of the coffee was much more expensive than the same packets in the supermarkets, but on the other hand we bought nice kids’ tee shirts for 5000 colones each and the identical ones were 25000+ at the airport!

I did not enjoy this place. The aisles are very narrow, you get harangued about 70 times, and I don't enjoy every shop owner approaches me. If one shop would post clear prices and let a customer browse - they would be instantly the most successful booth. I'm a tourist that went here to spend money, and I ended up with nothing.

Best place to do all of your touristy shopping and grabbing things for your family back home. Many different shop owners all in one area selling various trinkets and things. Many of them are similar but it's the best price compared to what you would pay at the airport on your way out. If you're paying with cash, you can work out a little bit of a discount too. Everyone will be pressuring you to walk into their booth so just be patient and understanding seeing as though everyone makes money off of tourism. And if you're not interested just say no. Thank you. Everybody was happy and nice and the entire market.

Yes to everything. The craftsmen know what they are doing. I bought a necklace and pipe from here and he literally crafted the work before my eyes to customize it for me. The shops are full of custom paintings, necklace and a boatload of other trinkets. Highly recommend - support local craftsmen!

Great place to get great deals on unique to everyday items you may need. Also hood for souvenirs and kids items. We enjoyed walking around looking at all the handmade crafts. Awesome items from true Costa Ricans. Thank you for being such sweet, honorable, and friendly people. We will return.

Excellent tourist souvenir market. Was not overly crowded on the weekday. Many stalls with similar items, so don't feel pressured to buy, can shop around and see which shop owner you like the best or can give a good discount. If you are a foreigner this is likely a good stop as it is on a main walking avenue in centro San Jose.

Good place to buy the souvenirs for home and friends. You have to bargain on anything, vendors will sell. A few vendors could speak English enough to do business and polite ( no pushing).

It's okay, small, if you've traveled around costa Rica nothing here will be of surprise or be something of interest. Will be pricier than elsewhere. Hard to browse because vendors are on you, but if you need last minute souvenirs you can get it here.

All the souvenir shops in one place. Nice products, friendly people ,little bargain and you buy !Very close to the Plaza de la cultura.

Some things are honestly priced. Others aren't. Do not buy your coffee and chocolate there. The choco and coffee I bought was half the price at Walmart... Definitely some collusion between merchants.

Don't go here if you're looking for postcards. There's only 1 guy selling some and the selection is quite limited, 1 USD per card. There are other stores in town.

If you are in San Jose, this is a must visit! It can be overwhelming but the sights, sounds and smells completely fill the senses. I loved every moment we were there and got some very beautiful shots of the mounds of spices, herbs, fish markets, pet stores, leather goods, and colorful trinkets displayed, to name just a few. Get your bearings before you go in because it is easy to get lost.

It was a great experience. A place to find beautiful souvenirs and a variety of small restaurants where you can find traditional Costa Rica food. It is also a place where locals can also do some groceries shopping.

Nice capital, a lot of people shopping everyday. Alots of food to choose from and people are friendly. We stay here 3 days and was worth it. I would do the tours with included dinner. It’s worth it.

So many little shops in one place. You can shop for dinner, herbs and spices or just eat at one of the many stalls that serve hot food. Save room for frozen custard (its like pumpkin pie and eggnog had a baby). Lots of ways to top it or just have it plain simple. You can't go wrong. On the weekends it can be very busy and parking is not easy to find. Some parking lots are inside old buildings and are very secured. Make sure to make note of where you parked so you can find your way back to the car. The market is a massive place and easy to get turned around inside. The surrounding blocks on all sides are also full of shops. Vendors even setup on the sidewalk and spill into some of the streets. Keep in mind what you can realistically bring home as every country has different regulations and taxes. But if it is the start of your trip you can find great deals on things for your vacation.

This lovely market is a MUST EXPERIENCE if you want true cultural immersion, while finding the BEST deals on fresh seafood, fish, cheeses, herbs, flowers, vegetables, and hand-crafted souvenirs! Some vendors are fluent English-speakers while most speak very little English, but you will fine with hand gestures and smiles. :) All are very helpful and friendly. Stop at one of the sodas, little “quick foods” restaurants offering local dishes, for a snack or meal, before continuing on. When finished with the market, step outside and meander through all the streets. There are also many more shops, bakeries, and vendors all selling their goods. IMPORTANT: Some local residents advised us to leave the area well before dark as it can become little unsafe.

This was a lot of fun to visit. Hard to find, as it sits inside a city block - no big entry, have to enter through what look like tiny alleyways. Some amazing things for sale in an open market style, and the local food was delicious!

One end of the market opens out to a very civilized part of town, the other side should be avoided. Don't take valuables(jewelry)and keep personal belongings tight! If you only have time to visit one place in San José, this has to be it. If you're a foody, there's many small Sodas with tiny kitchens, serving Empanadas and other small dishes, as well as several butchers, fish mongers and other stalls - including fried chicken and (well with trying), Chicharrones de concha - crispy pork rind). We went early in the morning, and it was mostly locals buying goods, and then went back after midday - much more hustle and bustle but still mostly locals - this time all congregated around the Sodas and food stalls. There's a variety of souvenir stalls too, and lots of herbal remedies plus local produce. We spent ages walking around all the small alleyways and checking out the stalls, plus trying some of the food too.

The market is a madhouse but Lolo's ice cream and the hot chocolate at the central cafe are a must! Also lots of great produce. The rest is junk souvenirs.

Great central market. I’ve been here many times to grab some breakfast for around five bucks and some souvenirs. Tons of vendors selling an amazing array of things. I came at 7am this time as I had an earlier flight and almost nothing was open until 8-8:30am which is fine but google has it opening at 6am but only 5 vendors were open. Pura vida!

It was such a good place , super entertaining for kids and also for the parents . Our 4 year old loved it.

For $1000 local currency it's great value for entry. Parking is gated and secure for $1000 an hour. Very affordable price. Inside is huge space of Costa Rica people, science, open play space. It's very hands on and interactive open space kids can play and learned. I recommend it for any parents with kids to explore a few hours.

My 3yo daughter loved all the exhibits, even the ones that were closed. She spent most of her time with the dinosaurs and on the outdoor playground. The grounds are more extensive than I expected, and it's a really cool old building. Just as fun for the parents as for the little people!

It was OK. There are two museums here and I there there was some confusion if which I wanted. But honestly wasnt too much here. And there is nothing around. I did walk down towards the bust stop and had a nice breakfast since they opened later than posted on Google.

Very good attractions with focus on teaching kids. We spent 2 hours, but you can spend easily 4. There are some simple but fun activities, like the room from Alice in the wanderland and supermarket. Egyptian room is super cool. 8000 colones for 3 of us was super cheap. Recommended!

Great place to spend a day if you have kids! Four stars only because many of the rooms were so dark it was hard to even figure out what was in them. Other than the poor lighting, we enjoyed all of it, and the fact that it's in a former prison makes it even more interesting!

It could you use a quick freshen up. Some things were broken or didn't work. A few sections were closed. Otherwise, kids liked it but it got old pretty quick. Great for young kids in general.

Very inexpensive attraction. For the Adults: modest sized art gallery, a small section that shows the history of the prison, and before & after prison restoration photos. For the Kids: so many interactive exhibits - they will love it!

The children museum was so much fun. The kids really enjoyed seeing the dinosaurs and all the exhibit in the interactive part was the best we look forward to taking the kids back. It was really expensive and it made for a really fun day.

Our one year old had an absolute blast at the childrens museum. Dinosaurs were a hit and he especially loved getting up close with the airplane cockpit, inside the trains, and other vehicles. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Parking is close and has security. Huge success before boarding a 6 hour flight.

They have EVERYTHING from dinosaurs, space, airplanes and trains. Lots of history displayed in a kid-friendly way. Super Super interactive, we have a 3 & 6 year old, they absolutely loved it. Some chickens and ducks outside were really cute too! They also have a CARS exhibit as well which was super cute

It's a very nice place and is located in central downtown San Jose. I went to Mass on Sunday there and it felt like a traditional catholic mass. I returned another day to take a picture. There are various statues of saints inside as well and there is a church bell that occassionally rings. It is a very traditional catholic church and a great landmark to visit.

I love attending Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral. Reminds of the days my father took us there, on Sunday nights.

Stunningly beautiful cathedral in the heart of the San Jose. We were fortunate that a special mass was about to be held. Quite the scene to see all the priests (?) in the special robes with gold and red embellishments, line up for the event. As an atheist, doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the grandeur and spectacle that is the church. Interior is stunning and we were told to snap a few pictures before the service started. Well worth visiting but please be respectful of those who worship here.

Breathtakingly beautiful place to worship or just enjoy. Though I'm not Catholic, I found the symbols and rituals edifying and worshipful to my Christian beliefs. There was a Scripture-centric message throughout. If you're a tourist, be prepared for the fact that there is usually no air conditioning in the churches here. If there is little breeze and or if it hot outside, you may be uncomfortably warm inside. Nevertheless, it is an architectural, artistic, and cultural wonder that is a necessary stop for anyone who wants to get to know San José.

This free entry museum was wonderful, interesting, and in a beautiful location. The building itself is jaw dropping and as very poor Spanish speakers we still entirely enjoyed the visuals and setup of the exhibits. I would highly recommend a visit if you're looking for culture in San Jose.

A fabulous little museum located in the lovely Sabana Park. Some really interesting artworks, with the incredible gold mural upstairs, telling the story of Costa Rica down the centuries, being the undoubted highlight. We spent a long time in this room (with no other visitors there, which was nice). A great find, and somewhere you must visit if you're in the park!

It was a wonderful museum!! Frankly I didn't expect that much, but went there cause it was very close from where I stayed. It was surprisingly good. The golden room on the second floor was amazing, and the garden with the sculptures was beautiful. Not all the pieces had the English explanation, but the staffs were all kind and they offered me booklets containing English explanation. Thank you very much!!

This Museum I can only rate at mediocre. To be fair I'm comparing this experience to the MET and museums in Washington DC and Chicago. The museum has exhibits both inside and outside, multiple sections of art and lots of security. Visit this place with appropriate expectations and know it won't take long to see it all and you'll be fine.

Super cool free museum (that doesn't even accept donations!) in the heart of San Jose. Walkable and situated in a park, the place used to be an airport for the city and the 'gold room' tells that history. Pictures do not do it justice.

I believe this is a must see when you visit San Jose, Costa Rica if you appreciate culture. In my opinion, learning about the indigenous culture in the most important part in visiting another country. Seeing how their first inhabitants lived/live and what they contribute to the country is priceless. I loved getting first hand accounts of their contributions, art, crafts and craftmanship. Art tells a story and preserves the past. So, do yourself a favor and check out this museum. It isn't big but you will learn a lot.

I recommend visiting this place when in San Jose. It is a lovely building. The former airport. A varied selection of art. Currently an exhibition of Flora Saenz Longlois, which is worth seeing. If you are staying in Costa Rica, don't even bother staying in Central/Downtown San Jose, it's pipi town. It literally smells like urine and pee all over the place, you can't escape it. They told us that escalante it's good maybe, maybe. That's why you see this guy moping the floor out of pee.

This is one of my favorites park in San José. It's really clean and peaceful. There are different plants that make it even better.😍 you have the train station nearby, about 1-2 minutes walking. There's a university (UIA) nearby, as well. TSE, next to it basically. It got different statues of people who were important. Finally, this is a really nice place to take pictures.

When you need a peaceful, green pause in the midst of San Jose, this park is beautiful. There are many little places to sit and be still. It was very empty when we were there. The big trees and beds of flowers were a wcone break from ultra urban.

For 31 days I had seen a new type of bird every single day on my Costa Rica trip. I had 1 hour left before having to leave for the airport and I thought I'd try one park to find one bird that was new. Though this park is small and busy, if you look up you'll see many little birds flying around having fun. I found my final new bird here and I couldn't have been happier flying home. There's also a cafe called Otoya that is around the corner that has the best coffee in town. Go here and rest my friend, you deserve it.

This the National Theatre and while it's lovely, it's also very European. All the sculptures are from Europe. The tour guide was rightfully very proud of this building but if you've been to Europe it's exactly like similar buildings in many European cities. I would've rather seen the National Museum. Also the tour I was on only went into the lobby which is quite small.

Nothing special. There are so many people. However it can be quiet while you walk and you can find yourself a lot of people trying to sell something however they do it because they want to live. You may find some poverty but it’s a normal thing here. This place didn’t send me anything

If possible, try to go see one of their shows. Otherwise, it's open to public to admire the building from the inside, with beautiful paintings and statues, and an amazing café that has soft drinks and pastries. Best visited with a guide that can explain the intricacies of the building's history.

We stumbled upon this incredible find while walking in the French District. Extraordinary art on the top floor. The Lilith & Adam painting is a must-see. Beautiful outside garden setting to sip a delicious Malbec and breathe. They even project old silent films onto a wall in the evenings. Fun architecture of it being an old colonial home.

If you like to read about the exhibits, you should plan to spend more than 2 hours!

One of the best places to go in San Jose downtown.

The Plaza exists because the Bank of Costa Rica decided not to build a structure that would block the beautiful Opera House. This is a lovely open public space.

Area is surrounded by shops eateries and hotels. It is a main area or tourist to explore San Jose and get a feel of the culture of the Costa Ricans. The have two main walking areas one north a block from central street and one south a block from central. Along each roadway is lots of stores and markets to wander area.

Very nice place to see more about the history of Old San Jose. You can see different Theater and Dance presentations. Needs more restaurants, maybe access to the buildings as museums, need more recycling spots and a market.

This is a great place to have family or even corporate events, everything is under the concept of old Costa Rica.
