The Fontana delle Tette, located in Treviso, is an ancient sculpted fountain that has a curious history. During the domination of the Republic of Venice, this fountain poured white and red wine on the occasion of particular celebrations. Its name, translated into English, means “The Fountain of Tits”. The fountain was built in 1559 on the orders of Alvise Da Ponte, mayor of Treviso, following a severe drought that hit the city and the surrounding countryside. In honor of each new Podestà ( a chief magistrate of a medieval Italian town) the fountain gushed red wine from one breast and white wine from the other. All citizens could drink for free for three days during these celebrations. The original fountain was located inside the Palazzo Pretorio, in via Calmaggiore. Today, a copy of the original sculpture is placed in the courtyard of Palazzo Zignoli, while the original is preserved under the portico of Palazzo dei Trecento. The Fountain of Tits represents a curious and fascinating piece of history, testimony to past times and unique traditions. 🍷🍇 Visited February 2024

This beautiful monumental church is located in the south-western part of the historic center, on the left bank of the Sile, in an area mostly recently built as it was severely damaged by the bombings of 1944. Attached to the building is the former Dominican convent, today episcopal seminary. The Church of San Nicolò was built in the early 1300s by the Dominicans also thanks to the substantial bequests of the friar Niccolò Boccalino, better known as Pope Benedict XI. With its simple shapes, but elongated upwards, with the massive perimeter walls just broken by thin slits from which a light enters tempered by the ancient windows, the Church of San Nicolò marks a moment of transition between the robust Romanesque style and the elegant Gothic of transalpine origin. The interior of S. Nicolò has a large space, where you can breathe a pleasant atmosphere of brightness that is reflected in the warm and golden tones of the brick. The Latin cross of the building is divided into three naves cut by a transept on which five parallel apse chapels open. The columns, which support the simple carined wooden ceiling, show frescoes by Tommaso da Modena, present in the second column on the left, depicting San Girolamo, Santa Agnese and San Romualdo. Other frescoes in the church are attributed to his school, although not directly to the teacher. There are 12 columns such as the number of the Apostles, among which the first 2 are in stone. In the presbytery, there is the funeral monument of Agostino Onigo (15th century), a valuable sculptural work by Giovanni Buora and Pietro, Antonio and Tullio Lombardo. An important role in the endowment of the convent was played by Gherardo da Camino, an Italian leader and feudal lord. He is commonly considered the main exponent of the da Camino family. Being a church of regulars, in 1797 the church was occupied by the French and the conventual minor friars were expelled. In 1806 the convent was suppressed by the laws of the Kingdom of Italy. The church was thus used for military purposes and as a stable, while the two large cloisters were demolished. Only in 1928, after a restoration, was it reopened. The interior of the church is extremely beautiful in simplicity and is full of significant works by great masters of painting. On the left wall, there is a gigantic fresco depicting St. Christopher, a Romanesque-Byzantine work of the late thirteenth century. On the sails of the vault of the main chapel of the apse are the Four Evangelists, the Stigmata of St. Francis, a Madonna with Child and Adam, from the fourteenth-century Venetian-Emilian school, probably the work of a pupil of Tommaso da Modena. In the first chapel on the left (Giacomelli chapel) there is a work by Tommaso da Modena, the fresco of the Madonna with Child and seven saints (1350), a true artistic masterpiece of the church and testimony of the refined Gothic style of the Emilian master then active in city. In the second chapel on the left there is a fresco by the Maestro di Feltro, Madonna and four saints from 1351. The church houses the tombs of some famous people: Pietro Alighieri and Francesca Petrarca the most important.
