This UNESCO world heritage site is a must see. Go early, as it gets very crowded when the tour buses arrive. Since they do not allow photos in many of the nicer churches/rooms, I was lucky to have a guide with a great book published several years ago full of pictures. I was able to take pictures of the pictures.

A few cave museums are there. Dark museum is the best restored one. But it will charge additional. Try to get an audio guide to understand in detail. Near to love valley. You can trek through love valley to reach the open air museum.

A great place to visit and get a feel for the cave houses and history of the area. Easy to access and get around with information boards as well. Some very nice artwork in some of the churches.

Nice museum and I do recommend going. The ancient frescoes in the cave churches are remarkable. On the downside it is a pretty small venue with lots of limitations on camera use (you’re not supposed to take any pictures of the frescoes) and the cost of €20 (plus 6 more if you want to see the dark church) is pretty high considering what you get. Expect to spend 1-1.5 hours on site at most.

A must visit when here in Cappadocia. This place is full of ancient small churches. Recommended to buy the audio guide or have a tour guide with you to explain the history of the place. Expect to spend about 1.5 hrs here. FYI if you're taking coach bus, there are alot more stores and souvenirs at the area where the bus coaches wait.

Stunning views! Even more interesting that thousands years ago there were people lived in there. We can walk, rent 3 wheeler, jeep to get closer to those rocks and enjoy sunset at the end. Don’t bother to hesitate, this is really a must-see spot. Those rocks are magnificent!

The entire place is fascinating, you can never get bored of walking and looking around, it seem to be from another world. I will definitely get back here even if I’m that type of person who doesn’t like to visit same place twice, I always like to discover new places but this is one of the places that definitely is worth it.

Really nice place to visit, must to when in the area. You can see fresco’s in the caves, former kitchen and living rooms, etc. All caves are accessible on foot, would recommend getting a guide for extra information on everything.

Very very incredible. I have been here twice, and it will never stop blowing my mind. The many churches with incredibly preserved paintings throughout made our jaws drop. The history of this place, and the people that lived here way back when will never not be interesting. Very steep price, but totally worth it. It’s extra to go into the dark church, where I believe it’s not a must see. It’s not very expensive, so do it, but if you don’t have the time, you’re not missing much. Some of the other churches around are just as incredible

A great historical spot, but sad that there were so many people. I paid for the audio guide and found it didn’t really provide all that much interesting info. The fantastic history and beautiful geography would be worthy of a 5 star rating, but the crowds really took away from the experience. FYI, the Dark Church requires an extra entrance fee.

One of the best Open-air Museum I've ever visited! Immense yourself by the sheer amount of exploration and adventure you will have here. This museum has a lot of historical values to offer, mainly about the stones and the volcanic and tectonic activities that happened thousands of years prior.

This area contains the best cave churches in Cappadocia and several monastic complexes. Please note that it is still being excavated. In 1985, the Göreme Open Air Museum was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You have to visit not only Göreme Open Air Museum, but the entire area as there are over 60 cave churches and numerous ancient settlements in Cappadocia.

Definitely the place to visit when in Cappadocia! We visited at the end of the day (just before 6pm) and were the last people to be admitted. As such we did not have much time to spend, however, we were not met with congestion and loads of tourists around and we got great sunset views! We decided to get a tour guide for 25 euros (discounted price as we were last and he would not be spending much time with us) who was courteous and eager. Nevertheless, I have to admit his knowledge was not extending beyond the information we could find on the signs outside each monastery, church and monument. So it was a little waste of money, but a great company nonetheless! Tips: (1) go either first thing in the morning or last thing in the afternoon - but allow yourself time for visiting all places of interest. (2) do your research with hiring a tour guide and ensure you find someone knowledgeable with good reviews online. The price can always be negotiated on the spot depending on the type of tourist you are - wanting pics and a story for your friends and family or wanting the full blown historic facts tour with a bit of the rest too! (3) DO NOT TAKE PICTURES IN CHURCHES WHERE NOT ALLOWED- I could not stress enough how hostile the staff/security are when they see you holding a phone, camera upon entry. We had a terrible experience with a particular security staff who did not speak a word of English and was shouting and threatening us for making the mistake of walking in with the camera on after taking pics outside. They are rude, (clearly) dislike tourists (and their job as they appeared bored to say the least) and you won't be able to win an argument with them. (4) wear comfortable shoes as some of the points of climbing are slippery. Comfortable clothing and a hat are also recommended. Take your bottle of water too as there is a cafeteria only at the entrance/exit.

Audio guide asked for passport as security which is weird - I’d never do that, they need to sort that our. Apart from that Great place - it’s amazing to see this landscape - but the interpretation is very limited restricting the quality of experience. You can take the local guides but your experience depends on the quality of guides themselves. You need good 2hrs to complete this place. We enjoyed looking at the landscape but you need non slippery shoes and walk around carefully. The landscape and views are great.

A very unique place. A fair bit to explore. Take your time. There are many interesting caves. Make sure you walk all the way to the end and back. It was really beautiful and worth the walk. We visited in winter, the weather was nice and it was not overcrowded.

About 25m walk from the Goreme town centre, google maps shows a route taking hour and half but that’s incorrect. We didn’t enter the museum seeing some of the reviews here about churches being closed, it also appeared busy with a lot of buses full of people coming in, we instead took the route from the outside that gives some spectacular views of the valley and did a small hike nearby - which was extremely peaceful, hardly any tourists and allowed us to soak in the views and the beauty of the area. Definitely recommend the walks around the museum, can’t comment on the museum itself.

I was very impressed with this place. However, spending a few days in Cappadocia, there are other more impressive locations. I don't mean to take away from the open air museum but you can get better value for money at the other sites. My 2 main issues were firstly the price which did not include entry into the church cave. This was extra when you have already paid in. Secondly, the audio guide is only available via your phone, which for many travellers is not accessible. Overall all the site is beautiful and worth a visit if you are under time constraints. However, I later found far better value and more interesting locations within the region. We visited in the off season and it was busy enough with tourists. I wouldn't like to see it at the height of the tourist season. I'd say it would be extremely crowded.

A monastic life was present intensively in Göreme from 4th century AD to 13th century. There were church, cafe, and rest places in the cave and with a batch of ascetic monks. You may see a lot of painting on the rock. The first is painting directly on the rock surface, smoothing it out; the second work is a painting on the rock using the tempera technique.

I think it is a bit overpriced for what it is. The valley just beside the ‘museum’ is nicer and free. On the site, it’s mostly churches and churches and more churches. It’s nice to see the paintings though, but in my opinion maybe not worth 480TL.

I must admit that this open air museum was a little underwhelming. The audio guide could be more accessible, without needing the customer to download the app and go through a complicated procedure. Otherwise, it was quite interesting, but it would’ve been better if there was more information and there were guides to provide more contextual knowledge about the history of the area.

Nice place to hike for few hours on your own pace. Pretty quiet as tours don't go down the valley. You can park your car in the parking lot (free), take pictures by the tree with pottery and eye symbols with a view on Ucisar castle. After you done with photos there, go down and explore the views from vlose proximity. We went down and walked to Ucisar castle fown the valley. Great time and a lot of photos.

We really enjoyed hiking the easy trail of the pigeon valley. People usually just take a picture from the viewpoint so its a great place to walk, and enjoy with no people. Lots of little caves, rock formations, lots of birds and peaceful. In total its 4 km to Goreme but you can walk less. We recommend at least to go 2 km ( half way) to get a view of the next valley.

Beautiful landscape with lots of little holes. Unfortunately, we didn't see too many pigeons that day. It was interesting to know this used to be the place to harvest pigeon droppings. Very clever! Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Perfect observation point. Gorgeous view over the Uchisar castle. The food for the pigeons is sold there, you can buy and feed the birds. It is possible, the place could be overcrowded when visiting and you should wait few minutes to find the best place and take photos.

Beautiful Valley. Visited on the Green Tour, and it’s a great Panorama Viewpoint. There’s loads of pigeons, and you get to see the amazing Turkey Eye tree. Definitely worth a visit. It’s busy but not that busy as people are nicely spaced out to enjoy different angles of the area.

As you travel through Cappadocia, you may find yourself in Pigeon Valley. For most people, it's a stop on the road where you can see more of the rock formations the area is famous for. Naturally, you have the opportunity to buy more trinkets, My favorite shop has to be the natural Viagra store. It sells herbs and spices -- no medications --but I love the name. There's also a big pigeon statue.

We walked about 15 minutes down in the valley until we got to a sewage leak that covered the whole path in sewage. It smelled so bad and we didn’t want to step in it so we turned back. It was a nice 30 mins walk. You can get up close to the caves and see a lot of pigeons in the beginning. There is also a nice view of the castle from the parking.

We visited pigeon valley as a part of the green tour. It’s quite close to Gerome. It’s a valley full of small caves cut in stone, they were traditionally used to house pigeons. In the ancient times pigeon poop was very expensive hence those who owned these houses were rich. You can also visit the valley as a trek. It is an enjoyable experience.

Amazing landscapes, very well described and explained by a local guide who spoke English very well. all staff members were friendly and the sites definitely worth a day visit. you can walk safely on the paths and enjoy these beautiful ticks which once hosted monks.

Interesting place if you understand the story that goes with this. Pigeons were very important those days. So this entire valley was dedicated to pigeons. Pigeons were used as messengers, their dung was used as fertilizers for crops and the dungs were used to harden the walls of the caves.

It's an open place, not requiring tickets. As per history, pigeons were primary messengers at that point of time, so utmost care was taken for the pegions. They were used primarily for two things, one was as messengers and secondly these small houses were only made for the sole purpose that persons could come and make a nest for themselves, the droppings of the pigeons provided as manure to the people which could be used in farming. It's worth a visit, to see how small houses are made, how paintings are created on the walls to attract the pegions to these houses.

Beautiful view point - great to know about the history and the views are beautiful. The trek itself is easy, not the most exciting views but can be a nice thing to do in good weather. You can travel to pigeon valley view point by bus or taxi from goreme. Taxi cost us around 150 lira

Amazing location! This place used to be a place to harvest bird poop for fertiliser. The hike down from the parking spot takes around 15min. Could be very slippery!! Down there there are multiple caves carve by the occasional river formed from rain. There are alot of pigeon around and you can feed them with the pigeon feed available near the shop.

One of the highlights of Pigeon Valley is the extensive network of pigeon houses. These man-made caves served a vital purpose in ancient times, as pigeons were kept for their droppings used as fertilizer. Pigeon Valley is a Natural Heritage Park and formally declared municipal nature reserve in Durban, South Africa (29.8646° S, 30.9869° E). It is an unusual example of an urban reserve with very high levels of biodiversity. It was established to provide protection for the Natal elm (Celtis mildbraedii) and other forest giants of the coastal climax forest. Another rare tree that occurs here is Natal forest loquat (Oxyanthus pyriformis), which is endemic to the Durban area and to oNgoye Forest.

Kids love this place due to the fairy connotation and the fact that they can crawl into the carved out rooms in the chimneys. In the cave with the window, where everyone takes pictures, I climbed up to the 3rd floor (note that it might not be safe). I hiked in from a small trail west of the official attraction, which offered a great view down onto the site, as well as many other fairy chimneys to walk amongst. Plus, it was free :) The trail serves as a nice starting point to hike back to Cavusin, stopping off at the Cavusin Cave Castle and an essential summit to the Zelve Mountain Lookout.

We explored the fairy chimneys via atv. We did a 2 hour stint, which was amazing to look at the valleys and the chimneys. Plenty of hidden places to grab a drink and picture.

Nice tall cool rocks, cool nice caves, nice verry cool time here, walk around with good weather verry goood time with family, bring your family for a verry nice and cool time with your family and look at the roc with your family. A nice hike to get away from the crowds. There is an impressive church about 1 mile away from the start of the trail. The trail has a forestry feel to it but if you are looking for seeing lots of caves and/or Fairy Chimneys that is not the trail for you. It's free and a great trail to take when you have lots of time in the area and not keen on seeing the most impressive attractions

Beautiful rock formations and free of other visitors. You can see similar structures here as pasabagi. Lots of ways to get there but we went on the path closest to the road.

Cappadocia is A magical unique destination of fairy tales. It is best TO see by hiking. There are Lots of hiking trails in cappadocia whereever you can experience Magic. One of them is Zemi Valley. It would be Good if you allocate at an Half Day for this valley. Narrow valleys and fairy chimneys , pigeon holes, vineyards, weird shapes of rock formations , natural tunnels, and many more awaits you. You would better approach the trail hear near A point between Ürgüp and Ortahisar. Good strategy TO walk from this point since it is declining from this point TO asphalt road near-Göreme. There are some wonderful natural tunnels in the middle of the valley, which are So Good passing through. Only at A point on the road, you need TO climb 2-3m cliff where often A mountaineer rope ready TO Help you. You can also visit some cave churches, when you get closer To Göreme.

One thing is to say something about this valley and a different one being there The views 😍 are expectacular. I cannot describe with simple words my experience because not eve photos make justice to this beautiful area. I will definitely recommend this trip, just make sure to keep a safe distance from the certain edges, a good picture doesn't deserve a person's life.

Calm and breezy. The view from the cafe is nice. A tourist photo spot. Be aware of people trying to sell you stuff right besides the view point. Picturesque and would be definitely more beautiful if there were balloons on the sky.

Spectacular hike! Don't miss the trek through the valley bottom. The suggestive rock formations are... noteworthy, to say the least, and the swooping, colour-stratified rock walls give the landscape a sense of flow and movement. The entire trek takes between 45 minutes to an hour.

Ignore my pictures below as the camera didn't capture the true essence essence and beauty of the wonderful view of Love Valley's vast rock formation that you're about to see. The hike is in under an hour and the trek is easy. A very good place to just marvel at nature and contemplating your life choices.

To describe the viewpoint at the top, the views were not impressive. I went there in the evening to see the valley from above. I think you should go there early in the morning to watch the hot air balloons crossing this valley. At the entrance, obscure people collect vehicle tolls, so it is better to come on foot if you are not comfortable with that. The valley itself is nice to walk around and admire the views. A few days later I went down from the south side. To get down, you have to pass through the Love Garden Cafe.

A very beautiful canyon, one of the balloon canyons of Cappadocia. There are quite a few walking routes in it, you can walk in the valley as well as on the two high ridges. You can also take a circular walk. There is a cafe upstairs with a great view.

This is one of the world's prime Instagram photo spots. There is no charge to use many of the props here, such as some of the swings, benches, and heart-shaped frames. It's interesting, but often crowded near the main overlooks. A Small restroom facilities are available for a small fee.

I did not go to the overlook. I entered down below and hiked in the valley. It's an easy hike and the chimneys are striking. It's really rather peaceful and so many less tourists than most of the other places.

a very beautiful landscape to capture plenty of memorable photos, there are few shops to buy some souvenirs and snacks too, we went there in December so everything was covered in snow and it was very cold, we really enjoyed our time over there.

Superb, unique place. I have never seen anything like this before. The volcanic eruption layers and the colours, structures caused by erosion are something out of the world. Our guide from the red tour was very good and he described everything perfectly. There was also a photo point and some food stalls including a Turkish Ice Cream stall.

Excellent place to see the balloons take off and land. Got there around 5am, parked and walked with the balloons. It gets very busy but it was not a problem.

Pretty awesome place! Can't say that I ve seen anything like this anywhere else in the world. Gotta appreciate the humor of those who named it 😆🤣😂 We got caught in the rainstorm but it passed quickly and left the valley for us to have to ourselves for a while... it felt so much like walk in Eden's Garden

My husband and I did a hike through Love Valley which was incredible! Lots of shade and only a short slightly difficult climb, the rest was fairly flat and easy with lots of picturesque spots. We also did an ATV tour that stopped at the lookout and we could see the whole valley, very impressive as well. A must see if you are in the area.

Very interesting rock formations, with some nice fairy chimneys. We only looked at them from the top and did not hike our way down. We were told by our guide that it would be a boring hike, so we can't comment on what the scenery would be like up closer.

Awesome place to hike and visit. Love Valley in Cappadocia, Turkey, is famous for its distinctive, phallic-shaped rock formations. Beautiful location, decorated well by establishments there…. A lot of adventures such as jeep safari, horse riding tours and photography options are available..

The love valley is a good location for enjoying the sunrise and sunset. However, you can't reach the place without having your own car or you booked a taxi.. And you should take into consideration that you will not be able to go down to the valley.

Starting from Pigeon valley, all the way up to Uchisar, cross over the road to Honey Valley, White Valley then Love Valley. But overall love valley stood up amount the other valley as can see from picture. Something unique and is easy to identify. I would really recommend anyone stay at Goreme or Uchisar, please spent some time walk through and feel the beauty nature. Is really walkable, because there is sign and path which is there. Not afraid lost in direction. We took almost 5hrs to discover this 4 valley. All along the side you may see apple, grape, small river stream. Always depends on the seasons. During winter we start walk from 12pm, is good to hike.

The history of Love Valley dates back to at least Roman times. There goes a legend that there once was two dynasties living in the same village. A fight broke out between the two dynasties, which resulted in the village effectively being split. One day, two villagers complained about the situation which resulted in the recruitment of two people from opposing sides. The two recruited soldiers fell in love with each other as soon as they saw each other. The feuding villagers, having had knowledge of this, tried their best to separate the two but failed. After they struggled to separate the two, the villagers decided to get them married. Time passed, the couple had a child, However the situation wasn't enough to reconcile the opposing families. Finally, they killed the boy. The girl couldn't stand her husband's death and later committed suicide. It is said that after the death of the two lovers, God rained stones to punish the feuding villagers. These stones are to kill anyone who opposes the reunion of youth.

This is one of the most unique formation in Cappadocia. Naturally beautiful and a must visit stop during your tour.

A place you must visit in Cappadocia

So worth the hike up the hill before sunrise! Would definitely suggest getting there early before the crowds and before the balloons actually take off. Even out of season there are dozens of balloons in the air and it is truly a spectacular sight to see, especially as the sun breaks the horizon over the fairy chimneys! Admission to the view point was 20TL per person which is almost nothing for the views. Simply pay at the kiosk at the bottom of the hill and continue the walk up. It can get chilly before sunrise so would definitely advise taking an extra layer and something to drink as the walk up is steep and you’ll appreciate it at the top. This is a must-see for anyone visiting Cappadocia!

Great place to see the balloons! Woke up at 5:30 and went on top of the hill. Easy to walk up, and a wonderful view where you get the sunrise as well! Some balloons also floats by right next to the hill! This is my highest recommendation in Göreme!!!

We arrived earlier and decided to turn back just before sunset. The view was spectacular, but the strong wind and dush made it less interested in staying longer. Some people tried to earn money by taking our picture in candid mode and selling it at a high price, hoping we would buy them due to the unforgettable moments he captured for us. Although the candid photo was good, I'm not too fond of this concept as I was inconvenienced being candid by someone whom I don't know. The entrance ticket was 15 TL for adults and limited parking space.

Amazing view point where you can just get a drink, sit here and wait for the sunset. Walking distance from the town. You can cut through to the other end that leads to Goreme Open Air Museum.

Fantastic place to view balloons early in the morning. It is about 10 minute hike from the centre of Goreme, but it it worth to be here early so you can see both an amazing sunrise and the balloons. There were lot of people when we were there late March.

We couldn't see the balloons on the day we visited due to heavy winds and couldn't get a good glimpse of the sunset either due to the weather. But it was good nonetheless. Amazing view of the village and the valley. It was 3 liras to enter per person and there were no facilities up there. There was one turkish ice-cream man trying to sell all by himself whilst everything else looked deserted. A random stranger even tried to take a good picture at the location and taught me a new pose.

It really isn't the best spot to watch the sun setting. It's actually too high. There's a lot of glare. If you stand further down you can get the interesting rock formations and buildings to obscure the glare for all round better photographs. People have to pay 5 lira to reach this area too although it's not a private road so in fact although it's not much it is a con.

Scenic sightseeing perch affording pretty views over Göreme and the surrounding countryside. I am however disappointed they've blocked off a public road and charge 10tl per person to ascend directly from town (hence the four-star rating). You can bypass the toll (even if just on principle) by taking an alternate route up, though the nearest path, behind some nearby bars, is a mite steep. Use FATMAP to find it. It appears on Google maps that the access points further afield are more manageable.

This place is amazing! Went to this place for sunset and sunrise and was in love with the views. Sunrise is much better of course due to the hot air balloons flying around :) Bear in mind that you have to pay a small entrance fee of 10 liras when entering a territory by foot. There is an option to reach this place by your own car for a few too.

Magnificent view: The only problem was the photographers. They have no respect for tourists. They don't understand that this tourist paid money and flight to reach this destination. They kept telling us to move away to take photos for turkish girls half naked. One of them said the girl feels cold 🥶 move away. As if we told her to be half naked in november..

Amazing place. As someone scared of heights who could not use air balloon, I really appreciate this place. Entrance fee is 10 turkish liras. Phenomenal view, balloons get really close here! Recommend that everyone comes here! 😍

Is a must visit if you stay at Goreme. No matter during winter or Summer , Autumn or Spring, all year beautiful. There is picture and video attached during day and night. Now they have build a toilet on top. Of course the convenience store selling fresh juice and wine as well. There is bench you can have sit and relax enjoy the beautiful view. In the morning the balloon always tend to flower over this sunset/sunrise point, it get very close up, you can say hi to the people who fly the balloon and the pilot. There is entrance fees you need pay at 10tl, but at night when i went there is no fees.

It was a great experience! The crew and pilot were easygoing as well as fun to be around. Breakfast was included before the ride. The views were nothing short of amazing! Flying over the city, seeing all the caves from above, a clear view of the mountains in the distance, and seeing all the other balloons flying all around added to the magic of the moment. Afterward, there was champagne and snacks. They charge more for the added features, which might not be worth it for some. However, overall, it was worth the experience.

Great BUT LADIES BE CAREFUL the guy that made the visit was really too close from us he had wandering hands, I'm glad we were 4 to feel safe. I wouldn't suggest to a girl to go alone there.

Entry fee of 2€ just because the place is listed along with some other things in the valley by UNESCO (earlier discovery). There are some hidden churches much better preserved in the rose valley that are completely free. Go there instead! Some decent frescos but not amazing.

The shape is sample, the architecture is beautiful. A lil hard to find, we found it while hiking. It’s closed till April, but the man there was too kind so we had the opportunity to explore this old historical church!

The church is closed, but if you will look on right side from the church, it’s gonna be small room with person who is let you enter inside. His name is Sami and he knows the history, he can explain you what every picture does it mean. His English is very good :) entrance fee is 5 TL, you can give him tips also. Actually, church inside is very small, but pictures are so real, don’t liable to suspicion that colors are fake)

I loved this little church off the road but be ready for a short hike. It will take you 20 minutes at a leisurely stroll to arrive. However, the frescoes are worth the walk. Also, there is a 5-10TL charge per person to go inside the church.

A little old church with very old fresco and a lovely caretaker man Sami , he is the highlight! His smile and welcoming demeanour shine a light bright! He is very knowledgable of the church frescoes and the little surrounding area. Sami even invited us onto his little cave office to make us Turkish tea, and even to give us a Turkish style massage for our legs, back and shoulders. True kindness not wanting anything in return, he just enjoys company and he is a great person as ambassador for Turkish kindness. Some people in this reviews are really so stingy with their ridiculous complaints. Sami is the caretaker and he charges 20 TL to enter the church, which is nothing! It’s less than a dollar for gods sake people. And you should be happy that Sami maintains the church and ensures the church does not get vandalised by tourists!

The intact frescoes are amazing. It's a place tucked away from the tourists in the honey valley- opposite Goreme open air museum. It's not much to look at from outside but don't drop it from your list because of that. The walk around the valley may surprise you with little apple and grape orchards in the folds of the dusty and bare mountains. The best part of the church is the remains of the vivid colours of the frescoes.

It was really good to see this place. Not much remains of the frescos, but I like the architecture and its shape. It was very small inside, takes 3 mins to visit. You can use qr code (inside church on the wall) to get information about church. We went on a Saturday and it was open even though Google said it was closed. Museum card is valid. If you don’t have museum card, you should pay 20 Turkish Liras to visit. Have a good trip travelers!

If you’re going out of your way just don’t mind going. Photos are actually not allowed until the ticket guy said I had the chance to snap one. It’s really small and not worth the time and effort. Same as other churches that are better around. I don’t understand the no photos when it’s not even maintained at all like everything else in the area.

Well, images are in a very good condition, but it's SO SMALL!!!! I don't understand why they charge you extra for it. The entire Open Museum worth 1 dollar without this one, and then you charge extra for it? I don't get it... Overall, if you got into Open Air museum, yes, visit this one, but if you're thinking if it worth paying for Open Air museum - NO, it's not!

This is the best church to see in the area partly because the restoration team has done an amazing job bringing the frescoes back to life - biblical scenes have been chronologically hand painted throughout the ceilings and walls of the place. It's located proximal to the Gerome Museum but you do need to pay an additional entrance fee; there's also a guard who may restrict the amount of time you can be in there for. It's good to have a tour guide for this because they can explain everything using photos before you go (guides are not permitted to go in, probably to avoid further congestion).

Incredible of course, with amazing and well preserved art throughout. However, it was very small. I don’t understand why you need to buy a separate ticket for it, as it is just as great as the other churches throughout the Goreme open air museum. The price isn’t much for the extra ticket to go in here, but if you are in a time crunch i don’t recommend going here

Painstakingly restored by an international team of Turkish, French, Italian and Polish experts over 8 years, and being preserved carefully and diligently. Camera flashes and thousands of tourists breathing on them harms the fragile frescoes. Surely all that is worth a few Euros and being shooed away if you linger too long!

We, already suffering from cave church fatigue, were reluctant to pay the extra 8 Euro entrance fee. In the end, our inner curious cat prevailed. Upon entering the church, a cool breeze greeted us, offering a respite from the oppressing heat. The Church was small and dimly lit. When our eyes grew accustomed to the darkness, we were dumbfounded by the scene before us. The elaborate and beautiful frescos were everywhere on the walls, pillars and ceiling. We found famous biblical scenes such as the Last Supper and Crucifixion on the wall. We experienced tranquility and spirituality as we walked around. All this while, Jesus Christ was watching from the ceiling with his benevolent eyes.

Amazing fresco, best preserved in my opinion. Entrance to the park was 300 TL, + 100 TL to see the famous frescos. In my opinion you can enjoy other parts of the park for free - but if you are into art - it’s worth it. No explanations or clear directions in the park.

Open air museum is breathtaking but the churches themselves were very small and often very dark and cramped

Beautiful church (perhaps most beautiful in the open air museum) but you have to pay 50 lira to enter. The security guard inside claimed that you’re only allowed to visit for 5 min and will aggressively kick you out. So up to you if you think 0.5 euro per minute plus rude security guards is worth it; for reference the other churches in the area are nearly as beautiful, free, and you can enjoy things at your own pace.

Neat little church built into the stone, though nothing special over and above what can be seen at other sites. That said, the cost of entry is only 20tl. Not sure the reason for it-- maybe (hopefully) some of that money goes toward upkeep? And flashlight batteries...

This felt like an excellent example of making business in the name of a place of prayer. 20 TL taken as entry charge (I know its wont seem much, but it's still ridiculous because there are enough and far more beautiful monasteries and churches in Goreme Open Air Museum with proper descriptions where one already pays 150 TL) and when you enter inside, there's really nothing, not even some kind of a board or a write up about what you are seeing. The man sitting at entrance will just give you a torch and tell you to go upstairs to see church n monastery. You go up using a narrow n dark staircase and see nothing at all. The "ticket" that's handed over to you says nothing about the church. Just a small little chit. In this region, it feels as if one could just put up a board on any cave calling it a church and start charging money for entry. Sad!

The Aynalı church is interesting though nothing special. It is attended and a 10TL per person charge is made by the municipality . The area is clean - A decent stop though other churches are more interesting.

Stumbled across this shop on our way to Uchisar castle. What a great find! Naile showed us her Ebru art and my children did a piece for themselves which turns out great. Highly recommended activity especially for the younger ones.

I was fortunate enough to meet Naile at the bus station asking her for directions to Uchisar. Serendipitous- we were headed the same directions! On the bus, she told me of her family, career and passions. Her vivacity for the Ebru art captivated me so much I took a detour to visit her gallery. And am I happy I did. There I looked at her paintings; some of which had immaculate detail, elaborate composition and elegant intricacies. She explained Ebru is a 600+ year old Turkish art form where dyes are placed in a water mix that include cow enzymes and then delicately transposed to a medium (paper, papyrus, silk, marble, etc). Then she demonstrated the process. It's an interesting art form that combines creativity and chemistry. Just watching a master work on the medium is hypnotic. I also met her husband who was a delight, offering tea and showing me pictures of their family and world record! Yes, Naile holds a world record. As I left, Naile called me back and gave me the painting she drew for me. Personally signed - AMAZING. Naile and her husband is one of the most memorable couples I've met while traveling - they are good people. Tesekkur Ederim Naile for sharing your passion with me. Viet P.S. Ask them what their secret to 30+ years of marriage. The answers are humorous and apt.

Amazing demonstration and great art in the traditional UNESCO protected cultural heritage style.

This UNESCO world heritage site is a must see. Go early, as it gets very crowded when the tour buses arrive. Since they do not allow photos in many of the nicer churches/rooms, I was lucky to have a guide with a great book published several years ago full of pictures. I was able to take pictures of the pictures.

A few cave museums are there. Dark museum is the best restored one. But it will charge additional. Try to get an audio guide to understand in detail. Near to love valley. You can trek through love valley to reach the open air museum.

A great place to visit and get a feel for the cave houses and history of the area. Easy to access and get around with information boards as well. Some very nice artwork in some of the churches.

Wonderful open air museum. Amazing landscape and rock formations. We went there with an organised tour so our time was limited. We would have liked to spend more time there. If you are walking slowly then give more time there. If

Nice museum and I do recommend going. The ancient frescoes in the cave churches are remarkable. On the downside it is a pretty small venue with lots of limitations on camera use (you’re not supposed to take any pictures of the frescoes) and the cost of €20 (plus 6 more if you want to see the dark church) is pretty high considering what you get. Expect to spend 1-1.5 hours on site at most.

A must visit when here in Cappadocia. This place is full of ancient small churches. Recommended to buy the audio guide or have a tour guide with you to explain the history of the place. Expect to spend about 1.5 hrs here. FYI if you're taking coach bus, there are alot more stores and souvenirs at the area where the bus coaches wait.

Stunning views! Even more interesting that thousands years ago there were people lived in there. We can walk, rent 3 wheeler, jeep to get closer to those rocks and enjoy sunset at the end. Don’t bother to hesitate, this is really a must-see spot. Those rocks are magnificent!

The entire place is fascinating, you can never get bored of walking and looking around, it seem to be from another world. I will definitely get back here even if I’m that type of person who doesn’t like to visit same place twice, I always like to discover new places but this is one of the places that definitely is worth it.

Really nice place to visit, must to when in the area. You can see fresco’s in the caves, former kitchen and living rooms, etc. All caves are accessible on foot, would recommend getting a guide for extra information on everything.

Cappadocia summarized. I just wish there was more information about the amazing cave churches in the area. All of the available information seem very loose and not supported by credible research. Extremely interesting and unique place to explore.

Very very incredible. I have been here twice, and it will never stop blowing my mind. The many churches with incredibly preserved paintings throughout made our jaws drop. The history of this place, and the people that lived here way back when will never not be interesting. Very steep price, but totally worth it. It’s extra to go into the dark church, where I believe it’s not a must see. It’s not very expensive, so do it, but if you don’t have the time, you’re not missing much. Some of the other churches around are just as incredible

A great historical spot, but sad that there were so many people. I paid for the audio guide and found it didn’t really provide all that much interesting info. The fantastic history and beautiful geography would be worthy of a 5 star rating, but the crowds really took away from the experience. FYI, the Dark Church requires an extra entrance fee.

One of the best Open-air Museum I've ever visited! Immense yourself by the sheer amount of exploration and adventure you will have here. This museum has a lot of historical values to offer, mainly about the stones and the volcanic and tectonic activities that happened thousands of years prior.

This area contains the best cave churches in Cappadocia and several monastic complexes. Please note that it is still being excavated. In 1985, the Göreme Open Air Museum was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You have to visit not only Göreme Open Air Museum, but the entire area as there are over 60 cave churches and numerous ancient settlements in Cappadocia.

The Open Air Museum of Göreme is a fascinating place to visit if you are interested in the history and culture of Cappadocia. You can see the amazing frescoes that decorate the walls and ceilings of these structures, depicting scenes from the Bible and the lives of the saints. Some of the most famous churches in the museum are the Dark Church, the Apple Church, the Snake Church, and the Buckle Church. The museum is located in the Göreme Valley, which is also full of other attractions such as caves, fairy chimneys, and tombs. You can explore the valley on foot, by bike, or by horseback. You can also join a guided tour to learn more about the history and architecture of the museum and the valley. The museum is open every day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and you need to buy a separate ticket for the Dark Church. A good tip is to get a museum pass, you can use it all over Turkey.

Definitely the place to visit when in Cappadocia! We visited at the end of the day (just before 6pm) and were the last people to be admitted. As such we did not have much time to spend, however, we were not met with congestion and loads of tourists around and we got great sunset views! We decided to get a tour guide for 25 euros (discounted price as we were last and he would not be spending much time with us) who was courteous and eager. Nevertheless, I have to admit his knowledge was not extending beyond the information we could find on the signs outside each monastery, church and monument. So it was a little waste of money, but a great company nonetheless! Tips: (1) go either first thing in the morning or last thing in the afternoon - but allow yourself time for visiting all places of interest. (2) do your research with hiring a tour guide and ensure you find someone knowledgeable with good reviews online. The price can always be negotiated on the spot depending on the type of tourist you are - wanting pics and a story for your friends and family or wanting the full blown historic facts tour with a bit of the rest too! (3) DO NOT TAKE PICTURES IN CHURCHES WHERE NOT ALLOWED- I could not stress enough how hostile the staff/security are when they see you holding a phone, camera upon entry. We had a terrible experience with a particular security staff who did not speak a word of English and was shouting and threatening us for making the mistake of walking in with the camera on after taking pics outside. They are rude, (clearly) dislike tourists (and their job as they appeared bored to say the least) and you won't be able to win an argument with them. (4) wear comfortable shoes as some of the points of climbing are slippery. Comfortable clothing and a hat are also recommended. Take your bottle of water too as there is a cafeteria only at the entrance/exit.

Audio guide asked for passport as security which is weird - I’d never do that, they need to sort that our. Apart from that Great place - it’s amazing to see this landscape - but the interpretation is very limited restricting the quality of experience. You can take the local guides but your experience depends on the quality of guides themselves. You need good 2hrs to complete this place. We enjoyed looking at the landscape but you need non slippery shoes and walk around carefully. The landscape and views are great.

A very unique place. A fair bit to explore. Take your time. There are many interesting caves. Make sure you walk all the way to the end and back. It was really beautiful and worth the walk. We visited in winter, the weather was nice and it was not overcrowded.

About 25m walk from the Goreme town centre, google maps shows a route taking hour and half but that’s incorrect. We didn’t enter the museum seeing some of the reviews here about churches being closed, it also appeared busy with a lot of buses full of people coming in, we instead took the route from the outside that gives some spectacular views of the valley and did a small hike nearby - which was extremely peaceful, hardly any tourists and allowed us to soak in the views and the beauty of the area. Definitely recommend the walks around the museum, can’t comment on the museum itself.

I was very impressed with this place. However, spending a few days in Cappadocia, there are other more impressive locations. I don't mean to take away from the open air museum but you can get better value for money at the other sites. My 2 main issues were firstly the price which did not include entry into the church cave. This was extra when you have already paid in. Secondly, the audio guide is only available via your phone, which for many travellers is not accessible. Overall all the site is beautiful and worth a visit if you are under time constraints. However, I later found far better value and more interesting locations within the region. We visited in the off season and it was busy enough with tourists. I wouldn't like to see it at the height of the tourist season. I'd say it would be extremely crowded.

A monastic life was present intensively in Göreme from 4th century AD to 13th century. There were church, cafe, and rest places in the cave and with a batch of ascetic monks.
