It is nice to visit castles when there is one around. It helps understand how the area grew around it. This one includes a lot of explanations. I just regret that the inside does not include any furniture. The castle in itself is well preserved, not as good as others that I visited in France but it is worth a visit. If we could have a service with human guides, I would go for it. It just makes such a huge difference about what you learn and how you enjoy the tour. The temporary painting exhibition was just great. The price is high though (14€ including the tower). I recommend to visit the tower to get a scenic vie of the city.

The castle is definitely the most significant building in the town. We most of the things in the town are built from bricks, this castle is also made of bricks, which was a big surprise for me as I am used to seeing castles made of stone. One of the worst hotels I've ever been to. They have the central A/C system and they set it to 25°. Do you call that A/C? Had to complain several times to set it to 21°. The bed was really bad. It makes a very disturbing noise every time you move. After changing the towels, they provided just one big towel for two people. Extremely disappointed.

Beautiful Cathedral, dedicated to St. George. It is located in the historic center opposite the Palazzo Municipale (Town Hall). The sacredness, the majesty and the beauty of the decorations and the frescoes leaves us breathless. The cathedral of Ferrara dates from the 12th century and bears witness to the historical periods of the city. The outstanding facade, divided into three sections, was begun in Romanesque style, still visible in the lower part. The facade is rich in scenes from the New Testament above the central door, the work of the sculptor Nicholaus (1135). The upper part was built some decades later in a Gothic style and besides the numerous small arches and the splayed mullioned windows presents an extraordinary Last Judgment by an unknown sculptor over the central loggia. The imposing Renaissance campanile (Bell tower), in pink and white marble, is an unfinished work attributed to Leon Battista Alberti. The interior of the church is rich in murals, paintings and sculptures by renowned Renaissance masters such as Nicolò Baroncelli and Domenico di Paris (bronze statues of the Crucifixion and of Saints George and Maurilius), Guercino (splendid canvas of the Martyrdom of St Lawrence), Bastianino (grandiose Last Judgment). Museums with this large amount of items tend to become an overwhelming warehouse or a careless highlight show without any educational intention (iykyk).
