Achill Island, located off the rugged west coast of Ireland, is a true hidden gem that captivates visitors with its unspoiled beauty, dramatic landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. During my recent visit to Achill Island, I was completely enthralled by its breathtaking scenery, warm hospitality, and the sense of tranquility that enveloped every corner of the island.
One of the most striking aspects of Achill Island is its diverse and awe-inspiring landscapes. From towering cliffs that plunge into the Atlantic Ocean to pristine sandy beaches, Achill Island offers a unique tapestry of natural wonders. Keem Bay, with its turquoise waters and sheltered beach, is an absolute paradise for beach lovers and hikers alike. The panoramic views from the Atlantic Drive are simply jaw-dropping, showcasing the rugged beauty of the island in all its glory.
Achill Island is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a wide range of activities to suit every taste. Whether you enjoy surfing, hiking, cycling, or fishing, there is something for everyone. I had the opportunity to explore the island's numerous hiking trails, and each one was a new adventure, leading me to hidden coves, ancient ruins, and panoramic viewpoints that offered sweeping vistas of the island's rugged coastline.
Apart from its natural beauty, Achill Island is steeped in history and culture. The Deserted Village at Slievemore, an abandoned settlement dating back to the 19th century, offers a fascinating glimpse into the island's past. The Achill Island Heritage Centre is another must-visit, providing an insightful exploration of the island's rich heritage and traditional way of life.
Accommodation options on Achill Island cater to a range of preferences, from cozy guesthouses and self-catering cottages to luxurious hotels. I opted for a charming bed and breakfast overlooking the sea, which provided a peaceful retreat after a day of exploration.
One thing to note is that Achill Island is best explored with a car, as public transportation is limited. However, the scenic drives and the freedom to explore at your own pace are well worth it.
