(Translated by Google) OSTIA ANTICA TERMOPOLIO BUILDINGS (VIA DIANA)
The Termopolium Tenement is a classic Roman tenement with rooms and taverns that develop around a courtyard. The building was to consist of a ground floor with mezzanine, first and second floors.
From Via di Diana you can access through the main entrance of the building; here a corridor leads directly to the internal courtyard. Next to the corridor, as usual in this type of architecture, an external staircase leads to the first floor. From the outside of the building, as well as from the inside through the corridor and the courtyard, you can access the rooms; most of these had a commercial function. The southern side of the building overlooks the Decumanus Maximus, here too there are shops. Another small courtyard is located at the north-east corner of the building. A Bar-Tavola Calda was installed between this courtyard and Via di Diana. The marble counter with sink is still intact inside. A mortar found in the room was installed on the counter itself. Next to the entrance there are benches, and above them well-preserved frescoes were found: architectural motifs, human figures, marble imitations on a white background. In the central portion of the wall there is a marble table equipped with a lower shelf and a further 3 shelves placed above as a ladder. On the wall, frescoes depicting food and drinks such as olives, eggs, turnips, watermelons or perhaps forms of red cheese give an idea of what the place could offer. The rooms adjacent to this one belonged to the bar itself; in one a cooking stove and a large half-buried jar were found, which was used to store a supply of wine or oil. Among the finds in this room there is also a metal collar with a Latin inscription meaning "Hold me so I don't escape. I am a runaway slave."
