If you are staying in the area you have to come here. Lots of orangutans to see at feeding time. We stayed by the feeding platform after the feeding finished and the crowds dispersed and more orangutans came to visit and we had the place to ourselves. The price for entry was 30RM per person and it is cash only! The place is quite small so it’s easy to get around. You stick to the raised wooden walkways which can be slippy especially after rain so wear sensible shoes. The staff seemed really disengaged and quite unfriendly. Many were sat on their phones ignoring guests. There were areas of the nursery we wouldn’t have known we could go to without exploring ourselves and again all staff hiding behind a desk on their phones so no info. There are Covid rules still in place for the safety of the orangutans. You are expected to wear a mask at all times indoors and outdoors and there are some seemingly random areas taped off. Hopefully this will improve soon and the staff will get more used to having visitors again.

What a wonderful experience to see these incredible and threatened primates in action. We learned a lot and thought the set up was very respectful of the animals. We went twice - afternoon is less crowded. Quite different each time.

Amazing experience and I love how all the animals are free to move around such a big place! I suggest you also take time to walk slowly and look for small creatures, I saw some that I found very interesting and pretty! (If you are into that of course) We went in the morning and then again in the afternoon and it was a different experience.

If you have never seen an orangutan, here is such a place to come. Its not like a zoo where there are tons of animals on display for humans; it's more like we are visitors to their home. So take it as such. We'll maintained walkways and a good number of trained staff make this place a good place to visit.

Basically guaranteed up close encounters with Orangutans. No fences, but felt safe with staff presence and all rehabilitated orangutans amidst the jungle on the walkways. Feeding times are a must! Did see one of them from the carpark though, just 10m away. Great information area too.

Loved it. Come early, little before 9 am. You can’t take any bag or water bottles with you , they give you a locker to put them in. And then enjoy the orangutan. They are so beautiful.

Went there around 2.30pm. The feeding time is 3 pm. The open air area only have one orang Utan came. But the nursery have more than 15 orang Utan came. So better go to the nursery area. Can watch from a aircond room.

Entrance fee is only RM5.00 per adult. There are two parts where you can watch the Orang Utan. One outdoor where you can watch they eat during feeding time (10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.) And one from the air conditioned room where you can watch Orang Utan that are under the specific age in the nursery behind the glass. There’s locker provided for bags. On our way from watching the Orang Utan eating to the nursery we were stopped by the staff because the OU is passing by the walkway, were lucky to experience that but not captured in photo here

I try to find wild Orangutan in Kinabatangan river but no luck to see them in wild. This is the best place to see orangutan in short distance. The staff all friendly from ticket counter, locker and along the track. They give me a lot of explanation about Orangutan that i never knew before. All you need is just start the conversation with them. Thank you for amazing experiences.

Great conservation project with great execution. This place rescues orangutans that have been displaced due to deforestation. Yes, this problem could have been avoided but kudos to the ORC for doing something. This isn't a zoo, the objective of this place is not for tourists to see orangutans. During feeding times though, if you're lucky, you'll see some - most from the nursery, sometimes wild ones from the area We saw one wild dominant male who must have smelled the food.

This is If course a good cause. But I do Not get the Hype around it. It is cute to See them eat but it is very overcrowded by tourists. It is a nice surrounding forest. But you should Not go there only for the Monkeys.

Such a cool experience to be amongst the orangutan! Then to have the other species of monkey come up too was awesome and a surprise. Lovely setting in the forest. Great staff. 10/10 would recommend.

A must see on your visit. Time your visit to the feedings to best experience the orang utans. We were lucky to see a mother with her baby. The sun bears were fun also. I wish the staff had done more to explain the rehabilitation process as it would make the visit even better.

Excellent, only word i can describe this place. We saw loads of Orangutans, feeding, etc, a truley remarkable experience. This place does a fantastic job for the Orangutans.

Highly recommend! The staff are fantastic at running this rehabilitation Centre and it is clear they have the orangutans best interest at heart as well as allowing the public to enjoy seeing them feed. It is safe, controlled and calmly done. It is a short guided experience to allow the monkeys their own time and not be overwhelmed by tourists. Watch from a far and be respectful and you’ll have a great time seeing these amazing animals.

A good place for those who have not seen orangutans before. This centre maintains a strict distancing between visitors and the animals for good reasons. You need luck to see more of them during your visit especially when the weather is hot.we were very lucky to come across a mother orangutan with her baby who unexpectedly appeared in front of us as we’re leaving the park. It’s an unforgettable experience!

First time here. Came during the feeding hour at 3pm, made it just in time. Wished we came a little earlier to have more time walking around the platforms. Lucky to see the orangutan 🦧 and if you just slow down along the way, there are tiny worlds on the railings too

A must see when in Sepilok!!! CASH ONLY - nearest atm is 15 minutes drive. Make sure you come prepared. Feeding time is at 10AM and 3PM. You can attend both feedings with the same ticket.

Wow! An absolute MUST when you're in Sandakan. I recommend visiting from 9am-3:30pm while they're open and ducking over to the orangutan sanctuary at 10am and 3pm to watch the monkey feeding. The sunbear conservation centre was one of my absolute favourite places I've visited in SEA. The bears are so ridiculously cute and you can tell they're very well loved and taken care of. The entire staff/animal handlers are extremely kind and knowledgeable about each and every bear as well as sun bears in general. The founder, Dr. Wong Siew Te, was even there answering questions and sharing his enthusiasm about these majestic animals. You can really really tell how passionate, knowledgeable, and inspired he is by these animals. It's such an amazing thing to know that these bears are safe now. There are two viewing platforms where you can see these bears from many different angles. They also tend to hang out around platforms so you'll have no problem seeing them! I also recommend checking out the gift shop, I was able to mail my family a post card directly from here and picked up some cute stickers and a tote! Also note that they accept card payment for entry/the shop! (: enjoy!

An hour is plenty of time to visit. It's quite small. Even if you only have 30 minutes, definitely go!!! That is enough time to see them. In the first enclosure the 3 bears were easy to see. We went in the afternoon. One was active. We did see another sleeping in a tree and glimpses of a couple of others in the farthest enclosure. The video in the information center was interesting and well done. We are residents of Johor so with our work pass visa we got the resident rate. Same at the Rainforest Discovery Center. Not that we mind the foreign price (although we do pay Malaysia taxes) because the prices aren't high for what you get to see and how well done the wildlife refuges are.

I understand why the center was established and there which is good to see, however being there felt like being in a zoo unfortunately. The bears are in large fenced enclosures which you can view from platforms above. They walk around like a zoo on dirt grounds, yet I remind myself they are handled better there than their previous owners. I would visit if you’re in the area.

We saw 9 or 10 of 19 sun bears they have. Some call it a zoo, but zoo animals does not have such large nature cages, this is in the jungle. I love this place and that they try to save the sun bears, thank you for doing this. We were there at feeding time, interesting to see them eat, and a monkey came and stole fruit from a sun bear.

Managed to see quite a number of the cute sun bears during my visit. There's no fixed feeding time so it was pure luck that that the bears were being fed when we arrived at 11.30am. Even after eating the sun bears were quite active despite the afternoon heat. There are 2 well built platforms to view the sun bears which are connected by a skywalk. There's also a guide at each platform to help you spot the bears and answer any questions. Prices are high for foreigners at 50 ringgit a person but you are contributing to the conservation of these beautiful animals.

Nice experience, you can really read and learn a lot about them there. They are doing a good thing, but you can see that some bears are stressed but it might be from before they were rescued. I liked the names and descriptions of all the bears and you can see they released two who were buddies in the sanctuary together, I found that so extremely beautiful and cute. There is not a specific feeding time but I got lucky when I was there it was at about 10.30. I liked it, the bears are really special and cute and you can learn quite a lot also.

What a great experience! Well worth the 31.80 ringgit they charge foreign visitors. We spent almost 2 hours here. At the start they have a series of well produced videos documenting a lot of the work the BSBCC has done for these bears. I'm not sure why some people are complaining about how far away the bear are (this isn't supposed to be a zoo after all) because it definitely wasn't true for my visit. Some of the bears we're less than 10 meters away. Even the bears further back in the different areas were still easy enough to see. They even had a couple telescopes set out so you could see them up close. The facility is very nice and I saw many other animals and interesting insects along the way. This was just as much fun as the orangutan sanctuary!

Well I was expecting to see Them more ( as I only saw 3of them ), and then they hide. They of course are nice , but definitely will never go again. But yes it’s worth to see one time in your life :::)) if u are so fare 🤭

This was a really lovely experience to see the sun bears up close. You can do the whole centre in less than half an hour as it is quite small but up to you if you spend as much time as you want at the two observation decks. Make sure to come between 10:30-11:30 as that is the feeding time and is a lot more interesting to see them eating than sleeping. The atmosphere is also very peaceful. I wouldn’t come a long distance to see it by itself but in addition to the orang-utan’s sanctuary it’s worth doing.

A great place to see how Bornean sun bears are saved from animal abuse and conserved and protected in one place. You can walk around in the dense rainforest and observe how the sunbears live. Located just next to Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre.

My first visit to BSBCC was a wonderful experience. It’s definitely a must-visit spot in Sandakan. I was filled with excitement to see the Sun Bears up close, and I was delighted to find that they are all healthy and well taken care of. During my visit, I was lucky to witness the zookeeper feeding the bears, and it was heartwarming to see how peacefully they ate. The bears even shared their food with the monkeys. While I was there, I learned about the history of BSBCC and gained a lot of knowledge about Sun Bears. I was also excited to see that they are looking for volunteers to help care for the Sun Bears. This is an opportunity you shouldn’t miss! If you plan to visit, remember to wear a hat because it can get quite hot due to many open viewing areas. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes too, as there are some stairs to climb to reach the bear viewing areas. I hope BSBCC continues to be well-maintained, and all the bears stay healthy. So, if you’re in Sandakan, make sure to stop by and enjoy this unique experience!

This place is amazing. Ah-maz-ing. First of all, it accepts card, as opposed to the orangutan centre right across the parking lot. Second of all, there are placards all around the walkways on sun bears, so there’s a ton of info to read (in Malay and English) as you stroll around. The feedings are random, not like the orangutans, which kind of stinks, but also means you don’t have a massive herd of people and it’s a much calmer atmosphere (at least when I was there earlier last week). And finally, I feel so privileged that the founder and CEO Dr. Wong, was on site and answered tons of questions and provided loads of detailed info on the sun bears. Myself and a few others were chatting with him for at least an hour. What a great man! He said he also does spay and neuter campaigns in the neighbourhood so even more kudos to him. The videos they show on the centre and Dr. Wong are educational and interesting to watch. AND THIS PLACE HAS RECYCLE BINS!!! 😍😍 Honestly, come here and adopt a sun bear!!

What a beautiful day I had looking at the Sun bears at the Borneo conservation area. These animals are fantastic to view while they stay in natural surroundings.

Watching the video to learn about what a this center doing. Respect their mission and kindness to protect Sun bears and protect the eco system of Borneo rainforest. If you are looking to seeing Sun bears only without knowing about their story, their mission, you might be disappointed because you might see a few Sun bears there after feeding sessions. And you can finish your visit with 30mins. My suggestion is watching the video to get information before or after seeing Sun bears . RM50 for entrance is hard to say expensive or not.,It depends on what are you looking for. I left 4 stars because of the difference of local and tourists fee, 10 compared with 50 and I really don’t know if there is a good reason doing that?

Really worth a visit. They do a lot to rehabilitate mistreated sunbears for a release into the wild, after years of preparation. The concept also means you're not guaranteed to see one or more sunbears but that simply speaks to the seriousness of what they're doing. The entrance fee of RM 50 for foreigners seems very affordable for the cause and their efforts. Little movie screening on their work at the entrance as well as a free cold water refill, true eco style.

I loved the experience and knowledge gained from this conservation centre. The sun bears are so cute and amazing to watch. There were informative signs up and great video explanations showing in the information centre. The staff were knowledgeable when I asked about the success of the releases back into the wild. It really sounds like they are doing great work here to help. They also offer free water re-fills which is brilliant as I didn't have to buy another plastic bottle :) I wish them all the best for more success rehabilitations in the future

Well worth the trip and it is quite heart breaking but also rewarding to read the stories about the sun bears and how a lot of them were illegally sold to be pets or used as a delicacy. No set feeding time but they had a feeding at 11.30am when we were there. Though the feeding wasn’t needed as the sun bears were well within sight. Small place with 2 viewing platforms, I think we were out in 45 minutes. You can also purchase postcards and international postage for cheap (RM1.5) in their souvenir shop.

Struggling how to rate this place if I’m honest. The sanctuary is actually an undeveloped area of a palm oil plantation that has seemingly destroyed the majority of the animals natural habitat and is now profiting from the few remaining monkeys by charging entry. You can access the site by car only. You arrive to the plantation and pay 60RM each for entry which is considerably more than the far more worthy Orangutan and Sunbear rehabilitation centres. Card payments are accepted. Aside from the viewing platform there is very little else to do. From the map it looks like a large walkable resort but it is actually a working plantation and you wouldn’t want to spend the day exploring. From the platform we did see a large hornbill and a number of eagles. At feeding time the workers dump a large bucket of bread on the platforms to attract the proboscis monkeys. We saw many and they are absolutely amazing creatures. It was incredible to see them up close. I loved the animals but the attraction itself was sad and I wouldn’t recommend it to others. It would be much better to visit these animals in their natural environment or to visit the other sanctuaries in Sepilok that are working hard to protect Borneo and the animals that live here.

Very cool place to hang out and see the Proboscis Monkey's. I didn't even know what a Proboscis Monkey was till coming to Borneo! What cool creatures, very smart too. We arrived early afternoon and we were just in time for a feeding, the man threw a bunch of bananas and other fruits to start and then eventually let them have more as more monkeys came to the platform. Some of the monkeys were very personable and interested in us, some were very skittish and less sure about what were doing watching them eat. Our time slot wasn't very busy and there were many Monkey's around, defiantly more than I thought. I was impressed with the sanctuary and learnt more than I was expecting too.

I was a bit sceptical visiting this place after reading some of the bad reviews. But it was not a disappointing one. A good place for a close encounter. The monkeys are free to roam. There were many infants. This place has been operational for almost 20years. Yes, most of their natural habitats have been destroyed due to deforestation but if they do not feed these monkeys, they might go extinct. That’s the price we pay to become a developed country. If you prefer to see proboscis monkeys in their natural habitats, do a river cruise with sights of fireflies but don’t forget to bring binoculars to see the monkeys.

The monkey so cute. But the road there dissapointed. Not suitable for small car. Potential attraction if improve the road and plan for more activities. Last feeding time 430pm for check point B. Tickets RM15 per person.

Hard to express my feelings but I didn’t feel comfortable to see that proboscis monkeys are feeding like that then I left early. I was so ignorance to believe this is a sanctuary, but actually this place is belong to the palm plantation owners who destroyed the habitat of monkeys and other wildlife. They are now still make money from them by feeding them and sell the ticket for ignorance tourist like me. Such a disgusting business. So sad that I didn’t read the review before going . When talking to the driver, he revealed that the real owners behind of the plantation and “sanctuary“ are Chinese. Please don’t go there and support those kinds of people by our money. Return the wildlife to that poor but lovely creatures. And if you want to see proboscis monkeys in the wildlife, go to Kinabatangan River, at KOPEL, they did a good job on the reforestation and creating the habitat for orangutans, proboscis and other animals.

I was frustrated that communication via email was not easy. But the bus driver was nice man. He gave me information what I wanted to know which I couldn't get that from email. The website needs update. The staff don't care about neither monkeys and tourists. yes, for sure you can see monkeys, but their home had destroyed. They are not wild animal anymore... more like pets in ''wild''.

We got to Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary from Sepilok with Mr.Abdul. He answerd many question about nature and Malaysian culture. He took us also to Kinabatangan River. We stopped everywhere we needed and every place we wanted to take a picture. We highly recommend to travel with him. Mr.Abdul contact: +601116695114, +601131515201, qayyumnasip1994@gmail com. We arrived into the Sanctuary to platform B around 12.00 pm so after feeding time. But we were very lucky, we saw the silver leaf monkeys there! They are so cute, friendly, calm and adorable 😍. They also came to us really close. Then we ate nice dinner in the local restaurant. After it we drove to platform A around 1.00pm. there were a lot of (more than 20 !) amazing proboscis monkeys. It was definitely worth to spend money and time there! It's better to take driver because the counter and platforms are very far from each other. We also didn't have internet connection there. So if we hadn't taken the driver we wouldn't have any options to come back even to Sepilok or anywhere.

Interesting place where to see proboscis monkeys close to you. Negative points: they feed monkeys with "no sugar" pancakes (as they said). Very poor info available for turists regarding monkeys, so apparantly no sign for rehab for these animals.

Animal cruelty at its smartest. A palm oil company has destroyed the habitat of these beautiful monkeys, and has now made a "sanctuary" where they feed these desperate monkeys bread. And I was so ignorant that I paid to see it. I was in tears after the first platform. Please, please, please don't support this horrific place. I hadn't researched it before going, and it honestly makes me feel sick that I supported this place with my money.

Amazing place, well worth going! We were at Platform B at around 1pm and we were the only ones there. Could already see the monkeys where we parked but they were a lot in very close proximity (within 5m), bring binoculars for the best experience! We were at platform A for the 2.30pm feeding, WOW the monkeys are already waiting well before 2.30pm. Great experience to see wild monkeys up close but could do with more information. Warning: the roads are absolutely atrocious and Internet connection is very limited. Price for foreigners is significantly marked up

Got to see monkeys eating fruits. Platform A feeding time is 9:30am and 2:30pm. While feeding timw at platform B is 11:30am and 4:30pm.

We went to the 2.30 feeding. Only 7 people showed up. Very good to see the proboscis and there were a lot of them. Very interesting to watch them. I recommend!

I love this place. I visited platform B and waiting for feeding time . There is a small cafe where you can order food to drink while waiting. Before feeding time, there was not a monkey, but when it approached the time, the monkeys gradually came. The monkey's face is very cute, I've never seen it before, there are small and big. The staff will continue to feed the base. We can walk to see every base. When the food runs out, the monkey will return to the forest.

Beware of very bad road condition, place have 2 platform not far from each other but the road to and in between at the point of non existence. Feeding time was interesting n monkeys just amazing. Whole place is just in the middle of palm tree plantation.

While it’s incredible to see the proboscis monkeys up close, the ethics of this establishment are definitely a gray area. They allow visitors to get too close and workers feed them ‘pancakes’, which even without the sugar, seem a far cry from food they would eat in the wild. The ticket price is high, and they are is no education or learning offered. You pay a high price to drive through their palm plantation to watch them feed the monkeys. While I was approaching platform B, one of the monkeys was startled and ran towards me at full speed. I felt very unsafe and worry for the children that were allowed to touch wild animals. These beautiful creatures are indeed endangered so I’m happy to see the land owners have elected to leave the forests and provide a protected place for them to live. Mixed feelings about the entire experience, a few changes to their practices would make the experiences safer for visitors and healthier for the animals.

A great place for birdwatching and animal spotting in general. You can see a lot both on the skywalk and walking on the ground. You can easily spend a whole day here! I’d highly recommend doing the night walk too as the guides have an incredible ability to spot wildlife. Note: it’s about a 20min walk from the orangutan and sun bear centre. During the day there are plenty of Grabs but at night there are none at all!

Had a good walk along the trails and climbed all the towers. Saw all giants of trees, plants and even a giant squirrel. Place well maintained. Keep it up👍🏻

This review is JUST for the night walk which is SO WORTH IT. I have a feeling the entrance free during the day is unjustified, as I freely wandered the plant garden right before the night walk. The 2 hour night walk is just fantastic. The guides’ eyes catch so many things us mere tourists would never see. Although the flying squirrel was too fast in flight to catch a photo of, seeing it was SO cool (despite waiting a half hour to do so). The adorable Western Tarsie though was the highlight of my evening (and potentially my whole Malaysia trip?!)

A perfect place for birdwatching, you can go to the top of hornbill tower to have the best view for the forest and the rare birds. If you love wildlife and nature, you can book a night walk session from 6pm-8pm for RM30 per person, a professional guide will bring you around and spot animals for you, we got lucky and saw slow loris, mouse-deer, tarsier, and red giant squirrel. The experience was slightly scary but very thrilling because it’s all dark and the only light source is from the guide’s torchlight. 10/10 would recommend!

I was fortunate to do a couple canopy walks at the Rainforest Discovery Centre, with one being an early morning that was a wonderful experience and one I won’t forget. It was so peaceful walking along the recently built canopy bridge and various towers that are high above the forest canopy listening to nature at its best, birds singing and flying around. If you’re there for the afternoon/evening look out for the flying squirrels around 6pm that are very cute and can fly great distances between the tree tops. Quite impressive creatures. Being a nature lover I could’ve walked the canopy bridges and towers every day for a week. Highly recommend the discovery center.

Go for the night tour!!! Bring torchlight,insect repellent,good shoes. Its really a good experience. Tourguide Jaulih had the best infrared eyes and he could spot the smallest insects even. Will come again if I am here.

Amazing experience, the RDC offers paths and hikes for everyone: from the canopy walk ("be a Skywalker" 😁) to broad and well maintained paved paths to little hikes meandering up and down the hills. Sadly, 8:30am was too late to see much in terms of wildlife, so go at sunrise. The canopy is an gigantic steel construction that blends in naturally with the jungle, and the views from the towers are breath taking. But it needs a bit of fresh paint in places...

We visited RDC three times during our stay in Sepilok. The first time we went on a night walk, which I signed up for via their website. The night walk was exceptional: we say flying squirrels, a western tarsier, 2 slow loris, a couple of snakes, and some interesting insects. The guides on the night walk were fantastic: we really could see that it was important for them that we saw as many animals as possible. The second time we spent the whole day here starting at 8 am and finishing at 5 pm. In the morning, we saw 3 different types of hornbills, including a rhinoceros hornbill. During the day we saw numerous squirrels, macaques, different birds and I was even bitten by a leech most probably while hiking the Kabili trail (I never saw the leech itself, only the results of its feast). The third time I went to the RDC in the morning and saw a couple of gibbons on the tree. Later on we also were very lucky to spot a pigmy squirrel which we initially thought was a lizard (yes, it was so small!). A lot of different colourful birds were seen around Birder's rest area. We also really liked the cafe in the grounds. The food was very good and really inexpensive, so we had a couple of meals there. We bought a couple of souvenirs from RDC's souvenir shop as well, they had quite a nice selection, especially considering that in Sandakan we didn't find any souvenir shops (only saw them inside the airport building eventually). I really recommend visiting RDC, especially in the morning (8 am - 10 am) and in the afternoon (after 3 pm), that's I guess when you have better chances of seeing wildlife. There are a lot of hiking trails, which we really enjoyed as well. The night walk here is a must: you are guaranteed to see flying squirrels and some other wildlife depending on your luck. Also, the entrance fee to RDC is only 20 MYR per person and the ticket is valid the whole day.

Wildlife haven. Fair admission fees and the signages, foodplace and well-maintained toilets make the place very visitor-friendly. Go for the night walk and if you're lucky you will see the slow loris and western tarsier in action. If you're a birdwatcher, make sure to go in early (it usually gets quiet after 10am) and consider going deeper into the trails or hiring a guide to see your target species.

We had a blast. The rainforest looks amazing from the Skywalk. We saw a lot of Orang-Utans climbing in the trees and on the Skywalk. Even a very big female. But that does not happen everyday. Back in the ground you can enjoy paths thought the rainforest with some examples of huge trees. The flower Garden is nice as well.

Review is for both day visit (solo) and night walk (ranger-led group). This place is great. The suspended walkways are seriously impressive, I’ve never seen any so long, so high or so far reaching. They offer you a view of all the different layers of the rainforest and also include spiral-staired towers which you can climb even further (I think one is as high as 30 meters) or get down to the ground paths at regular intervals. You do need a good head for heights for the elevated walkways though! Because the place is so sprawling and with so many trails, it’s really easy to feel like you’re there on your own. E.G. the ‘Kingfisher Trail’ I didn’t see a single person! Magical. I hiked 0800-1100 one morning (you can choose which trail / how long you want to spend there), and the ticket office will give you a really handy map (keep it safe)! There aren’t maps in the jungle but there are trail-name signs which is handy. I also did the 1800-2000 night-time tour too. This is with sharp-eyed park rangers and around 8-10 persons per group and costs 30 MYR. Not for the faint-hearted as they’ll have you walking through the undergrowth. You can take a torch but you don’t need to, I didn't. On the night-time walk we saw flying squirrels, a scorpion, 2 snakes, a slow loris, frogs, spiders, bats, 2 Western Tasiers. Funnily enough I saw almost nothing by day so really happy I did the creepy night-time hike. Good footwear, water and insect repellent a must any time of day / night! Some numpy turned up in flip flops for the night time walk! Silly! Not advised in the natural habitat of snakes, scorpions and spiders (obviously)! There's a cafe there near the entrance and it was open (depending on your route you could stop there half-way) but I didn't enter so not sure on quality etc.

Nice to walked at night and spotted rainforest animals. You can see giant flying squirrels from the top of the trees and with luck and patience, you can see they are flying . Guides are nice and speak good English. There is a new canopy outside the center where you can listen to dogs and birds singing. Having a mini shop and restaurant outside. In my opinion, it better to have a day visit then wait 1 hour from 5pm-6pm outside to the night tour start, and you will have a full experience of the rainforest life. Of course, it depends on your schedule and health.

We went on the night tour - BE PREPARED. You will be hiking for the majority of it so bring enough water and wear proper footwear. I would recommend bringing a torch or be prepared to use your phone flashlight to illuminate your path as the two rangers use their torches to find animals. We called and booked our spots on the day. We went after rain and it was quite slippery and we unfortunately got bitten by fire ants too. For the first 1hr 45 mins we saw glimpses of the red squirrel, some insects and then the kingfisher and a turtle. However in the last 15 mins the ranger asked if we wanted to give a last shot at spotting the tarsier and just our luck we found it! Made the night tour so worth it. Be prepared that you may not see anything. Nevertheless it was a good opportunity to do a hike in the night with a guide.

We really enjoyed walking around the park and spent almost 3 hours here. Managed to get a Grab to and from the Banana Cafe in the morning. Would recommend wearing closed walking shoes, musquito spray and to bring water. There is a cafe where they sell water and some snacks for pretty cheap. We saw hornbills and flying squirrels, but you have to be quiet so you don't scare them away. Luckily it wasn't very busy when we were there on Sunday morning. The park looked clean and has some great walks and viewing towers. Very friendly lady at the ticket office. They also do a nightwalk, but that requires advance reservation.

Highly recommend! We almost didn’t go here and would have sorely missed out if we hadn’t. We saw hornbills chasing each other, a female orangutan and her baby, a viper up close and personal along with so many other birds. You could easily spend hours here walking along all the trails. An ABSOLUTELY MUST VISIT!

Place is pleasing to the eyes and there's a lot of place available to take picture. But the information outside looks like they aren't well maintained probably due to covid but that's fine

Great memorial garden, well worth the visit! It’s hard to believe now that it was a prisoner of war camp. It’s very peaceful now but done well and allows you to reflect on the horrors that occurred there

Sandakan is a historical town, and if you're interested in its past, this is the place for you to visit. It's a small park that used to be a POW camp during WW2 time. Though not much monuments, but tons of information that tells you almost everything you need to know. The place is well maintained and free entrance, but long pants are recommended as you'll be accompanied by mosquitoes 🦟🦟

Short stroll around Memorial Park. New museum currently being built. Informative boards are dotted around the park. Tragic story of the c2,500 POWs that lost their lives in the camps and on the forced Death Marches. Definitely worth a visit.

was my 1st time visit to this place, very historic. right place to learn the history of sandakan and the death march story in detail.

Must see when in Sandakan! I'd say it's even more interesting than Sepilok Orangutan Centre, for which most people probably arrive. The park is well maintained with not only info boards but an actual mobile app for self-guided tour. Captivating stories and interesting history which, in my opinion, everyone should be aware of. 🙂

Didn’t know about this Memorial Park prior to coming to Sandakan but it would be truly a missed opportunity not to visit - particularly as an Australian. A beautiful area, fascinating memorial and very quite and peaceful.

On a pilgrimage to here as I lost a family member Henry Douglas Gardner at the POW camp in 1944. Very good small museum detailing life of camp. A respectful memorial to a harrowing time.

Great memorial park to remember what was a troubled time in history. The strength of the human race shines brightest in its darkest hour.

It's a nice small part with enough to paint a decent picture to educate others about its history and purpose. My only problem was with the sign upon entry, which deterred me from staying longer than 10 minutes in pure fear of the dangerous animals that might frequent there. See attached photo

After attending my brother-in-law's occasion, we decided to visit this place as it is nearby from our homestay. Firstly, this place is so peaceful that you can see a few local people walk and jog, enjoying the green of the park. Secondly, while enjoying the green, we must not forget this place has witnessed sacrifices, sufferings and pain of prisoners of war (POW) as well as humanity (when locals decided to help the POW). For someone who is keen on history, this is the right place for you.
