Majestic example of Chola temple architecture. Everything about this place is a statement of royal grandeur. Thanks to the large-scale restoration work done, the temple still holds the viewer spellbound. During the evening, the lights placed at specific points illuminate the complex beautifully. No surprise then that this place attracts a lot of tourists. One can easily spend a couple of hours here.

This temple is an amazing example of accomplishments of powerful dynasties ruling this region & symbolizes the prowess of Indian civilization. Being able to build such monuments more than 1000 years back is an astounding feat and most of the temple remains intact - at-least in terms of the main structure. It's an architectural marvel with a grand entrance, intricate carvings and large open spaces around the main temple. Temple premises are well maintained and despite some extra weekend crowd, we were able to enjoy the grandeur and beauty of the temple.

History frozen in modern times. Felt like a royal being in this place. Such marvellous architecture, such beautiful carvings and very well maintained. If you are a fan of history, this is definitely a place to go.

Awesome sculptures n construction. Very old temple with very rich culture n heritage passed through kings spanning across centuries. Art paintings made of natural colours still awe the debited devotees. There is lot of carvings on huge single stones which weigh tonnes. This place has many minute details which can be known only with the help of guide.

The place is very neat and maintained nice and picturistic. The building maintenance could have been better, however the are still repainting the temple. The wash rooms are very clean and the artifacts shop's are nice.

I first read about the brihadeeswara temple in a history text book, at school. Ever since , visiting the temple has been on my bucket list. I had visited here first in 2017, and had the good fortune of visiting again in Aug 2023. And what do I say. It's my favourite temple. Maybe it's the nostalgia, or maybe it's the magnificent architecture. Whatever it is, I cannot explain in words. There is one emotion which takes over all others, and that is of surrender to the almighty. Simply mesmerizing.

This is a beautiful example of architecture and loved this divine place a lot. Choose a good time in the evenings as soon as the temple opens like 4:30pm or so or go early in the morning to witness the fantastic view. After 10am the floor will get very hot depending on the day so choose a good time to visit. Temple is nothing less than extraordinary and will recommend every one to pay a visit if you are in the area or make time for it. Loved the huge gopuram and Lord Shiva’s magic divine idol.

The temple itself was impressive. It was huge and it's very famous among tourists. There were a lot of interesting things like wall paintings, Tamil inscriptions made in the wall, the architecture and everything was insane.

Awesome temple. The ambitious Brihadisvara temple by Rajaraja-I was begun in 1003 and completed in 1010 CE and was designed to represent a cosmic structure - the Mahameru. The temple is dedicated to Siva represented by a linga (3.66m high) and named Rajarajesvaramudayar after the king himself. The temple was built in a courtyard measuring 240 x 120m in the ratio of 1:2 with granite blocks being brought from a distance of approx. 50kms. The vimana soars to height of 60.96m and the stone sikhara (8 pieces) at the top weighs 81.284 tonnes. The inner sanctum is a square. The height of the temple has been achieved due to the two tiered bhumi (wall). There is a pradakshinapatha (circumambulatory passage) around the sanctum. The lower circumambulatory passageway has on its walls exquisite paintings of the Chola period while the upper one has the karana (dance poses) reliefs. The complex has the mein temple with five subshrines for Chandikesvara, Amman, Subrahmanya, Ganesa and for Karuvur Devar, the royal priest. There are two mandapas for Nataraja and Nandi. A cloister mandapa runs round the complex. Two gopuras - Rajarajan tiruvasal and Keralantaka are of the same period as the main temple and the arch is of the Maratha period. The walls and adhisthana (plinth) are covered with inscriptions of Chola, Pandya, Vijayanagara, Nayaka and Maratha rulers. From these it is known that numerous endowments were made to the temple by the royal family and the king. Large images in bronze and gold were presented to the temple. The receipt of donations and how the temple was maintained is engraved in great detail. The annual income from the land set aside for this temple is estimated to be 1, 16,000 kalams of paddy. The niches in the lower wall of the temple depict various deities like Ganesa, Vishnu with Sridevi and Bhudevi, Bhikshatana, Kalantaka, Natesa, Ardhanarisvara, Chandrasekhara to name a few. The upper wall carries the figure of Tripurantaka only.

It was just Bliss to witness this temple for its sheer brilliance of its architecture, engineering, construction, planning, design, efforts of its king and the masses...just extraordinary. Just couldn't believe that this structure was build 1000 years ago by my forefathers AMAZING....The best time to be here is at 5:30 in the morning...that is the time I went in and started to admire this "deserved to be a wonder of the world - let's say the eighth wonder, even if the world does not acknowledge it". Went into the nook and corners of this massive structure and spent around 6 hours to come out a different person altogether..blessed I am to be from this part of the world where I share the same space shared by my ancestors...

The best way to see how good your ancestors were!! What an amazing place You can park your car in designated parking area and walk through either east gate or north entrance .. very big temple and you need about 60-90 min to visit this place. Better to do enough history research before coming here .. expect rush for Darsan. We visited around 11AM and there was heavy rush as well as sun was at its peak ! Temple looks big n great. Wide open spaces, temple was maintained good. Parking available. Darshnam usually takes less than half an hour in normal days. Mobiles can be carried inside temple but photography is strictly prohibited.

First visit in 2020 and now again in 2023. This temple never ceases to amaze me with the structure and the details made for each corner of the temple. Still marvellous engineering from ancient times.

Awesome temple. We visited in evening and lighting was awesome. As you enter on the right there is place to deposit your footware and bags. Small bags are allowed inside, big bags to be deposited. Temple complex is huge. Try visiting around 5pm to see both day and night view of the temple.

You will find lot of details about temple. My suggestion is take guide with you. You should know the history of the temple that will help to know temple well. Note this is one of the live temple under UNESCO consideration. Go once at evening to experience at light. Or prefer at early morning at around 7 am. Enough parking opposite road of temple.

The temple is fabulous. The carvings and architecture will leave you spellbound. Always good to have a guide. The history too is fascinating You should go early morning or late afternoon. The grounds were burning and it was difficult to walk. I would suggest you wear thick socks to protect your feet. No youtuber has told this. It'll save your feet.

Amazing temple. Must visit in TN. Beautiful lighting in the evening... No entry fees. Enough space for footwear and bags stands. Public toilets available. Restaurants nearby are good too....

Ancient marvel! This place leaves you in awe, how could they have built it without modern equipment. The complex is huge with a massive Nandi inside in the centre of the main courtyard. The Shiv temple inside is beautiful and has positive vibrations. Dont blink and keep your eyes open for the entire duration of your visit. Every inch of this compound has intricate stone carvings with utmost precision. They got every stone aligned with impeccable geometry hundreds of years ago. It is well maintained inside and clean, the warm lighting in the evenings make it look magnificent. The only downside is the unkept parking lot and the shoe stand which is flocked by unwanted hawkers and litter all over. This is the cultural history of India which nobody should miss out on.

What a fantastic place to visit! Very good maintenance inside the temple. Have separate place to keep our bags and belonging for a reasonable price. Good that they are allowing to keep mobile to capture the stunning gopuram and idols.

Temple is in the middle of the city, there is an ample space of car parking in front of this temple, car parking fees is ₹50. Excellent architecture. There is a clock room for Chapel stand for this. They will charge three rupees per pair. It is a spectacular architecture, must visit place

One of the worst maintained place I ever visited in my life. How could they do like that. If it is maintained properly it will attract many tourists. I felt so bad seeing the condition of the palace.if you want to explore a new place you can visit the palace. And if you expect more there is nothing. You need to take tickets to enter each section. This palace authorities must visit mysore palace at least once and need to learn from them how to protect these monuments. The surroundings are not clean. So i will not recommend this place to anyone.

Thanajvur Martha Hall shows the Marathas architecture. The building is cool and calm . The paintings are awesome for historical lovers they can find many things over here. They have kept the canon and the canon ball which is very heavy where you can lift it . There is an mile stone showing how many kilo meters for thanjavur it takes to you the ancient time itself.

They are collecting entry fees and not at all maintained the place. There was full of waste products lying over there and we can see in many places of wall people have written their names and spoiled. Should have maintained properly.

Place is in shambles. There is no maintenance by authorities, though some money is charged for entry and parking. Monument itself can be a good tourist spot if developed well. The main palace is closed, and only a part of it is visible from distance. The temple/Darbar is open to visit, but again in very bad state.

In general it is a great place to visit with a lot to see. Its really amazing. The only negative point is that currently there seems to be some constructions and tools were kept on statues and it was kept untidy. There is so much great artwork, it should be cherished more. Also it would be great to have more opportunities for elderly people to sit.

The art works in the palace is good and has a great history behind. However, the place is poorly maintained, even with a entry fee of ₹50. There is a library, art gallery and the main palace. But i was totally disappointed in seeing the main palace. The wall artworks are washed off, the floors is dusty, the pillars and walls are damaged by people visiting it. It might take around 2-3 hours to cover the entire place, which is totally not worth the time. Better spend time at some other place like the big temple instead.

The Martha King and his family lived in the royal Tanjore palace. Fortunate to witness this majestic palace, this entire palace is a gold for history lovers.

They hold many legacy statues of Chola Kingdom. They have huge collection of rare statues from 16th centuries. Maintaining a whale bone for a long time which is really massive. People should coordinate to maintain the vibe of the place but they dosnt have any decorandom. Youth people are scrapping the Paints writing their names. Authorities should take strict disciplinary actions on them to avoid such issues. Also people are sitting were God statue been placed to take rest. Not sure how their mind getting changes when they see God in temple and in museums. A lot of changes need to be done within ourselves. It's our responsibility to preserve our legacy and culture.

Entry fees . You can get the ticket at the counter in the entrance and check the timings to avoid going by the lunch time as the counter will be closed for a short period . Cars are allowed inside and parking available In one area you can cover 3- 4 places . you can visit darbar, Saraswati mahal library - photo not allowed . Maratha palace - Photo allowed and must visit for the art and architecture. Bell tower - please avoid going there . Not allowed and it is not maintained. Built in 14th century, the palace is in ruins and apparently it’s in a neglected state. It’s the same case about the Saraswathi mahal library and Durbar hall inside the palace ground. One part of it is a govt girl’s school and other side is govt fire and safety department. There’s a museum inside the palace building featuring some artefacts. It’s high time that the authorities should be vigilant about protecting historical and cultural heritage sites the it should be protected. Visitors are scribbling on the walls and the palace is unattended. As a keralite who has visited several well known palaces in kerala, this is so unacceptable. The sheer negligence is showing everywhere.

Nice historical palace in the middle of the city. Unfortunately it is not well kept though there is a high entrance fee (Adults 50, Kids 20) apart from 2 seperate entrance fees you need to pay inside. There is lot of dust everywhere and some construction going on at places. Parking can be a challenge though it has some limited paid parking inside. The lady issuing parking ticket is also very rude. The store inside the palace is very nice and prices very reasonable (just watch out for additional GST apart from the price mentioned on the objects).

The Great Thanjavur Palace, known locally as Aranmanai. Nowadays, it is the official residence of the Bhonsle family who ruled Thanjavur (Tanjore) from 1674 to 1855AD. It's worth to visit as a magnificent ancient architecture at Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. Have a nominal entrance fee of ₹50 only. One can take cameras at a fee of ₹30 only. It is open for the visitors from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. IST, and remains closed during lunch hours. The Royal Palace stays open every day.

Must watch Palace in Thanjavur. There are around 4 things to watch inside and separate tickets for each. We’re able to see 3 items: Durbar hall (must watch), Outside of a library and a video show related to it, where highlights and history of Thanjavur is show (must watch), Bell palace (was closed). There is a queue to get tickets and a delay is there.

This Thanjavur Maratha palace is nice one with good museum and library. Very good and nicely sculptured Nataraja and Parvati idols from 10-13 th centuries could be seen. In main hall, beautiful ancient painting work attracts and catchy. Very nicely preserved palace properties could be seen here. How man's face evolved from different animal faces painting work is so splendid.

A must visit place if you had a chance to travel tanjore.It has a museum ,durbar hall,Bell tower. Except bell tower ,remaining places are not properly maintained .Bell tower has very nice architecture and are not allowed to enter the top.

The palace definitely needs a refurbishment, especially the Durbar hall which has the potential to become a great attraction, sadly it lies in its ruins. On a whole this piece of history definitely needs some attention and hope some part of the 50rs per head paid to enter goes to it's restoration

One of the famous palace in Tamilnadu. Located at very near Thanjavur Old bus stand (Walkable distance only). Best place to bring the children. Because they can know about history. Here, you can see the ancient sculptures, Paintings, Ancient Weapons etc. Frequent Town buses available to reach old bus stand from New Bus Stand and Railway Station.

Maratha Palace or Thanjavur Palace are complexes spread over a compound. You can enter the palace by taking a ticket of 50 rupees. The Thanjavur Maratha Palace Complex, known locally as Aranmanai, is the official residence of the Bhonsle family who ruled over the Tanjore region from 1674 to 1855. hanjavur’s royal palace is a mixed bag of ruin and renovation, superb art and random royal paraphernalia. The maze-like complex was constructed partly by the Nayaks who took over Thanjavur in 1535, and partly by a local Maratha dynasty that ruled from 1676 to 1855. The palace is noted for its huge halls, spacious corridors, observation and arsenal towers, and a shady courtyard. This palace is a must-visit place for history buffs to understand the history and lifestyle of its rulers as part of Thanjavur tour. The palace complex consists of the Sadar Mahal Palace, the queen's courtyard and the Durbar Hall. The Royal Palace Museum contains a splendid collection of Chola bronzes. The Raja Serfoji Memorial Hall and the Royal Palace Museum are situated in the Sadar Mahal Palace. There is also a small bell tower. The Saraswathi Mahal Library is situated with the Thanjavur palace complex.

The palace is very historic and I believe would be very beautiful, if it was maintained at all! The durbar hall was in such a sorry state, with cobwebs, dust and faded paintings everywhere. Even the exteriors of the buildings, with the exception of the bell tower, were not painted. The premises was littered with waste and water was seeping through a lot of walls. It is a very historic place so the archaeology department of TN must really do a better job with this place.

Please take care of timings. And do not forget to but tickets at Palace gate while entering the premises. A Rs.50 tickets allows access to all attractions inside the palace. This library has a museum where you can see old artifacts, literature (books, manuscript etc), maps, photos mostly of Serfoji maharaj. Photography is strictly prohibited. You can easily spend around 1hr here. We could not visit the audio and video hall as there was a big crowd waiting.

I visited recently but they didn't allow us inside the library. They said the library is only for research students. Not sure if they changed the policy recently. Nobody answered us properly. There's a 30 minute movie which is about Thanjavur and it's tourist attractions. It was good and included in the entry ticket.

It is located on one of the most historic places, the tanjore fort and is one of the oldest museums in asia, yet visitors are allowd to visit only the museum and not the library. was very frustrated as i was extremely looking forward to visit the library. take some extra entrance fees and allow visitors to vist the library please

Nice collection of ancient treasures on display. Good resource for students and history lovers. But, other than manuscripts and sculptures, there's nothing great to behold. A big negative is the way the library is maintained. So poor. As soon as you enter the museum, a smell of dust and old items hit you hard and it persists. It stinks and suffocating inside. No A/C or good fan/ventilation. Soon, you'll lose interest in seeing more and try to get out soon. They charge Rs.50 per head, but it's really isn't worth it.

It was very disappointing when we went there. The ticket counter was closed. Library Mahal was open but there was no body to guide. The paintings was the only thing I enjoyed. No display on audio visual timings. We could see bell house and darbar hall from out side.

The Britannica Encyclopaedia enlists the Serfoji Sarasvati Mahal Library in Thanjavaur, Tamil Nadu India, as 'the most remarkable library of India'. Dating back to the 16th-17th century, it was stablished by the Nayak rulers of Thanjavur and later nurtured by the Maratha king Serfoji II, who was also one of the most prominent rulers of the land. In mid 1800s, time came when the king was required to hand over his assets to the British. However Serfoji was able to convince the British not to destroy the library or to send the library items back to Britain and so the ancient library got saved. Thanks to the king, the library is not only one of the few ancient ones that are still there in the world, but also a well-stocked one. Not just books, the library boasts a large collection of historical art, paintings, maps and manuscripts etc all of which are also being stored and made available digitally by the Government

Great collection of Olai Chuvadi, Old Ramayana, Mahabharatham, Urdu scripts, Maps of India, London etc. By Sarfoji Maharaja II. Worth every bit. Go early morning at 10am and take a all inclusive ticket for about 80 per person.

Nice place to discover chola Dynasty, Especially Audio/video library at near library mahal, it shows visual of Thanjavur History, tourism place, agriculture, & transport facility details via audio/video shows, it's like a Cinema theatre experience in 30mins shows. By department of TN Tourism team. Must watch all of them, Family entertainment in full day shows.

In another part of the palace, the books and paintings from the library of the Maratha Empire are displayed. It was learned that there are more than eighty thousand scriptures including palm leaves, scrolls and books in the Saraswati Mahal library.

Very old library reminding us regard of Maratha empire for literature. Unfortunately the palace is not maintained by authorities. Both Maratha kings and even britishers tried to maintain it but now it is ignored. Authorities here need to be careful to cherish valuable books and paintings which have been maintained by great Maratha kings. It has good collection of paintings, books and other statues in its museum. Here what is most annoying is cab and auto drivers. Tamil Auto and cab drivers are very rude, uncivilized and always try to charge high. Not just some but all of them are uncivilized. Public transport is cheap but due to language issue one has to opt cabs. Avoid tamilnadu visit if you can due to annoying and uncivilized drivers.

This library is one of the oldest in India. It was established by Nayakar kings of Thanjavur. It has excellent collection of Sanskrit and Tamil books. Main attraction is big collection of rare old books written on palm leaf. Very few are on display and you will need to request the library in charge to see it. The library is maintained well and is probably the best part of royal palace complex.

One of the worst customer service I have ever seen in my life especially the old man who is sitting at the entrance of theater(literally bald man). Since we are coming from Malaysia as a tourist, we are expecting a warm welcome. But the PIC was totally rude and disrespectful. He simple grabbed our tickets and didn't inform us where to go, then shouted at us. Since I replied and asked him to respect others and give proper instructions, he doesn't allowed us to enter the library by kept back our tickets. We fought and went back then complained at the counter. As usual, WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE AGAIN!!!!, didn't take any action. If u want to take people's money, better try other job. At last we wasted rs200 without any good experience. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!!

Devotees suffering from Shani Dosha come here to pray to Saneeswaran and then take a bath in the Nala Theertham. By doing this, one is able to eliminate the negative effects of one's past karma. Upon entering the Thirunallar temple, we can see a small shrine dedicated to Nala. As we approach the main shrine, we will see the gold-plated Dwajasthambam. To the left of this main shrine is the Saneeswara shrine. Among the other deities in this temple are Karpaka Vinayakar, Kalathinatha, Subramanya, and Swarna Vinayaka. The temple is open from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

A place to visit for all devotees, especially who are suffering from yelarai sani. Visiting Saturday is good, but heavily crowded in early morning times. Taking bath in nala thirtham, visit vinayagar temple near it and then go to dharbaranyeswarar temple. This is the way to worship. Be cautious while visiting nala thirtham. Many people taking bath in nala thirtham are not maintaining cleanliness and are not aware of what they are leaving out on steps. Just leaving oil packets, soaps, shampoo packets and their dresses on the steps itself and not aware that if people step on it may fall off when they step on it. Securities are not there to properly instruct as well. Apart from this, visiting temple and worshipping gives lots of positive vibes and divine experience.

Paid entry for Rs.100 or Rs 300. Beware of brokers and touts. On Saturday and other crowded times no 'archanai' but still shops are selling all items and devotees are simply leaving the archana bags in various places inside. Rs100 for car parking, but stopped well away from the temple. Private persons offering entry of vehicle up to temple on payment of further payments. Simple exploitation.

Dont fall for commercial target shopkeepers and temple priests. Its a shame for Tamil and Hindu culture that whole temple is targeting money only. Few useful points: 1.You can walk with Slipper and bag till nalan theertham,dont listen shopkeepers. You can keep the baggage and slippers in free cloak room near the free dharshanam entrance. 2.Dont buy 50rs for shiva and 100rs archanai plate for sani from shops like in photos during weekends, these things u will be throwing away just after entering temple, no archanai will be carried with your things. 3.The nalam theertham should be used for a gentle dip to clean your sins (not to clean your body), but the dumb people use soap and shampoo making the water a ditch. Yenda , kulikkava inga varinga?? 4.after nalan theeertham use nearest pay and use bathroom for around 20rs per person to bath a again in clean water to avoid infection. 5.The free dharshanam people are treated like dogs, but 100,500 and VIP dharshanam people are allowed in main gopuram gate and their archanai is handled inside the temple with additional money. 6.dont blindly listen and give money to anyone . Take your time , roam around and understand the practices followed there. 7. Coconut breaking in Vinayagar temple of nalan theertham can be carried by your own, not compulsory to give money and carry through transgenders. Beggars and Priests should not dictate and demand money , they should graciously accept whatever we give , even if we could not able to give anything. One of the important Navagraha temple must to visit. This temple is near karaikal. Always this temple will have full rush. It's good to take the bath in the temple pond(exists in less than 1 km) and then visit the temple. When we take bath, we have to leave the cloths there itself. No soap/shampoo is allowed for bathing, only shikkai powder is allowed. Lot of fishes are there in pond, which cleans up the pond automatically. Though thousands of people take bath, pond gets cleaned by itself. In temple, we find separate shrine for lord shiva and lord sani. On daily basis at some specified timings there will be abhishekam performed to maragatha Lingam. I was lucky to see it. Temple authorities keep maragatha lingam in a locker (which we can see during the abhishekam). Coming to main diety lord Shani, he is the one who turns our life in different angles. Whoever are facing issues, visit him and get the issues cleared. Don't bring anything from temple. Not even coconut and bananas. Lot of parking space available, but need to go early to get place.

This is my first time and the temple wasn't very crowded which is a blessing. The entrance has a narrow street of shops which is a common and most expected experience for adults and kids. Narthanga sherbet is a wonder on sunny days. Due to COVID the entry is restricted to go via one path and return on the another, so you have to find a place to sit outside. The temple as of 21st Oct 2021 is under construction. It has a pond or small river like water log where it is filled with garbage and trash which I hope they'll clean up soon.
