Hyderabad District

Hyderabad is the capital of southern India's Telangana state. A major center for the technology industry, it's home to many upscale restaurants and shops. Its historic sites include Golconda Fort, a former diamond-trading center that was once the Qutb Shahi dynastic capital. The Charminar, a 16th-century mosque whose 4 arches support towering minarets, is an old city landmark near the long-standing Laad Bazaar.

Q&A about Hyderabad District

Sites - Birla Mandir, a gorgeous white temple - Golconda Fort: beautiful ruins, a nice uphill walk, and great views - The iconic Charminar and surrounding markets :) Food - Hyderabadi biryani! - Bawarchi's (beware of copycats) - Kamat Hotel - Karachi Bakery It's changed so much since I was there, but those I recommend.

Hi! Can't say much about Hyderabad specifics, but regarding attire, Indian men and women generally cover their legs (at least past the knees) and arms (usually past the elbow, although this constraint is becoming increasingly lenient). Observing these guidelines should help you minimize unwanted attention (this applies for both of you). South Indians (of any religion) and Indian Muslims tend to dress more conservatively. Regarding getting around, Ola and Uber are great ways to get around and to avoid getting overcharged. The Hyderabad Metro is also quite modern, and most urban rail systems in India also have women-only compartments if you're traveling alone, which I believe to be the case in Hyderabad as well. I would observe general vigilance as I would in any country - i.e. always know where you're going before getting in a taxi, what the general direction of the roads is, how long it should take to get there, have an emergency contact, etc. If you ever have trouble, people will always be happy to help you. If you're traveling alone and ever feel uncomfortable, I would recommend finding any Indian women (esp. younger women who are likely to be well-educated and to speak good English) who are nearby, and they will be more than happy to help and make sure you're able to get where you want to safely. Hope you enjoy your trip to India!
