Superinteresting place! Rebuilt 9-10th centuries little viking village. Visited it during Museum Night and therefore we expierienced the greatest atmosphere! Recommend to everyone!
Laine Lapina — Google review
A fantastic place to kindle your imagination about life in ancient times. The centrepiece of the site is a reconstructed settlement on an island in the middle of a lake. It will transfer you back to the 9-10 centuries AD and immerse you in the atmosphere of an ancient Latgalian community in the north-eastern Europe where pre-Christian cultures were still thriving at the time. The Araiši settlement is certainly on par with Scottish crannogs and the pile dwelling site on Lake Konstanz in Germany, but is far less know and is a true archaeological gem off the beaten track
The nearby romantic ruins of a mediaeval castle tell the story of a very different epoch, and offer a nice place for a picnic with a view of the lake settlement.
Finally, there is a path to much more ancient days, with reconstructed Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age dwellings. Some of the path is on a low-lying ground, mind, so putting on your wellies might be a good idea in a wetter season.

Tourist trap, nowhere said it was paid in English. We were around 20 people and we stopped in a muddy car park to rest, and people went for a walk. A the end they charged us 5£ per person. Nobody chased us. But the site is pretty, but if we had a choice we wouldn't pay. They said it had qr codes, well, I don't read qr codes and I never thought it was mandatory in this place.

Āraiši park is small but cute and informative. The water settlements are unique and the small museum is quick to browse throughand have a brief overview of the past and the work done to rebuild this site.

Not a typical castle. Spent one afternoon with little ones. Cute place and lots of fun for kids to play around, looking inside every house.
Annette Zee — Google review
Nice location, even in the rain it's worth exploring. Educational and historical, if I remember correctly entrance was between €4-€6 per adult. Well worth a trip if you're in the area or interested in Latvian history.

Modern museum, attached to 8-9th century lake castle remains and reconstruction of fortified settlement. Very atmospheric and informative. Best to visit in good weather.

Great place those includes rebuilt ancient village. Nice wooden houses show the way of living of vikings 9-10th centuries. Some houses are aviable for entry.
Great landscapes around the museum.
Free parking.
Entrance fee 2eur per person

We drove a long way to see this place. We live in an area of West Africa with stilt villages on the lake so this archeological site is very similar. It was neat.

The Cēsis Castle is a romantic medieval architecture fortress consisting of two parts; the old Wenden castle, built by Livonian knights in 1214, and an 18th-century manor house that was once home to the German counts von Sievers. The former is characterized by sorrowful dark-stone towers that were destroyed in 1577 by Russian tsar Ivan the Terrible after its defenders committed suicide with gunpowder.
Once the mightiest fortress of Livonia, this castle in Cēsis is a great place to visit. You can climb up to the roof to enjoy the view of the town. Even though the castle is quite destroyed you can enter some of the inner chambers and explore the remains. Outside the castle there is an exhibition in the open air where you can see some tools, weapons and handcrafts. Overall it leaves an impressive image of a Teutonic Order times.

Great place, has loads to offer, a lot of information but only in English and Latvian. Have outside space with activities and people dressed in traditional clothing and doing asigned location tasks, like leather work, wood work, gardening, etc. Inside is great interaction where you can sit down for wonderful video of time starting from 1213 - 2019 years. There is also museum part with paintings. Full entrance price is 10 euro, garden and castle bit is 6 euro and museum is 4 euro on it's own. Would take about 3h to fully enjoy this place.

Just go!!!!
This castle is located in the most charming village of Cesis.
Everything is postcard beautiful!
Village and Castle are an extremely easy 4-5 min walk from the train station.
The Castle itself is a marvel and you see so much! They give you an antique lantern on arrival and off you go through spiral staircases to explore!
Parts of the grounds are also interactive with a working mid evil garden.
They have a wonderful video show at the very top of one of the towers.
Also, don’t miss the museum at the entrance as well. If you walk clear through to the library you’ll find access to the tower that has an awesome outdoor view of the entire village.
Save some time to eat at a cafe on one of the cobblestone streets.
A true highlight of our trip!

Best castle to tour in all of Latvia. Be sure to grab a candle lit lantern when you get tickets and explore the castle by candle light just like in the Middle ages. Also, don't miss the multimedia history exhibit in the castle tower.
john siegel — Google review
I didn’t go on the tour so my review is far from complete. The castle is on a hill above a lovely park. If you want to see the inside you have to pay, which I opted not to do, but walking around the outside is great too. The walk only takes about 10 minutes but it offers some great views of the exterior and you can get up on an adjacent hill to see some of the town through the towers.

Stunning castle and mostly in great condition. Interesting displays inside along with a pretty good museum. The latter could do with some more English signage but apart from that a €10 entry fee and smiling attentive staff.
david howells — Google review
Definitely worth to visit. I especially like the 4D projection for illustrating the history and functionality of the castle. The lantern makes tourists more engaging.
Lance Lee — Google review
Visited Jan 2, 2022 and arrived at 3:30 local time with sunset at 4 PM so they give you authentic candle lanterns to make your way through the dark, unlit walkways and stairs. It was a very interesting and exciting way to tour an old castle.
Brian Krull — Google review
Loved this place. Only 10 euro to visit everything on the site. Beautiful 13th century castle ruins with benches and picnic tables in the garden area. Definately a must see while in Latvia as it's only a 3 euro ride from Riga to here. Very easy walk from the train station. Staff were cordial and helpful.
B Womack — Google review
Definitely worth the time and effort to visit. The castle is 800+ years old. They give you a candle lantern to navigate the very dark stairwells which gives a realistic feel to your time in the castle. Nice museum on site as well.

Unique, historical, ancient, medieval Livonian knights castle. With a very tragic story… must visit place if you ever come so Cēsis town.

Beautiful castle with rich history. Visit the new castle which has big museum. Easily can spend 2 hours
Daler Farkhodov — Google review
Great museum. Very interesting approach with candles to lighten your way while climbing to towers. It’s especially interesting for kids. In one of the towers there were a tower history video with 360 degree - similar to planetarium. It’s possible to visit 2 old castle towers, medieval garden and main museum. At moment when we visited in museum there were an exhibition called “Hallo” about communication and phones. Most interesting part were 2 old phones with circle pad, where you can call from one to other. Kid loved it. It was an amazing experience.
Azar Safarov — Google review
The town is very nice and the castle makes it more interesting. The entrance is from a courtyard near the park. 10 euros the ticket. The exhibitions are very rich and the place is also very attractive. English around the exhibits and not on the piece of paper per room would be great.
Cristi — Google review
Off to a good start with a very friendly cat at the entrance! Entry is worth the price with a very interactive and well kept castle with lots to listen to and watch. Some very interesting history and very accessible. A highlight was being given a candle lantern to explore the winding staircases.
One of the best castles in Latvia and well worth a visit
Juliet McQueen — Google review
Very beautiful castle and park... liked the authentic atmosphere a lot... the castle is of course rebuilt/renovated in various areas to not fall into decay, but it is not subtracting anything from the experience
The trip with old light to the top and the multimedia movie in the tower is really amazing experiences
Highly recommend this castle
Thomas S. Iversen — Google review
Cēsis castle is simply beautiful. I wish I could give more than 5 stars. I thought it would be a quick visit but we spent 2 hours. I was very impressed by the amount of interaction with the people working there. They have a cool games area where you can see and try ancient games, walking on sticks. There is a musician continuously playing traditional instruments and we had the chance of meeting a person re-enacting the trade of doing rosaries. Apparently on weekends there are more artisans. The animation in the masters chamber in the west tower is really well done. All in all huge applaud to the people working behind the scenes and the 2 friendly girls who worked the reception.

Pils laukums 11, Cēsis, Cēsu pilsēta, Cēsu novads, LV-4101, Latvia
St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cesis is a significant medieval church located outside of Riga, Latvia. Built in the 13th century, it still serves as an active Lutheran church and boasts a rich history. The church facade is awaiting restoration, but the community remains vibrant and engaged. Visitors can explore exhibitions inside and admire impressive features such as the tombs of the Masters of the Livonian Order and miraculously preserved stained glass with the Latvian coat of arms.
Nice Church
Ian Y — Google review
It's OK at max. Maybe, if you stretch your visit might be able to stay 15 minutes inside. Although, that is not counting climbing the stairs.
But in the church itself there is nothing that you would not find in most other churches as well.
So, it will be a run trough visit at most.
Ah, almost forgot, the glass in lead windows are actually not half bad at all.
P B — Google review
Pretty, very old, church with a terrifying (fun) option to tour the bell tower. The church is pretty, but let's be honest - all churches from that era are. For mere 2€ you can take your life in your hands and climb the stairs of the ~65m bell tower for a view. Most of the thrill comes from navigating the near-black steep staircase on your way up. Still, I enjoyed it.
Rich Bell — Google review
Nicely fixed up white church that really stands out in the town. Especially at night, the church shines with the spit lights.
The inside still needs to be finished being restored.

The church facade still awaits restoration, but the community seems to be very active. The guide, a senior lady, is very vigorous, helpful and gave lots of information, as did the exhibitions inside. The tombs of the Masters of the Livonian Order and the stained glass with the Latvian coat of arms, which was miraculosly preserved by the pastor during the Soviet time are impressive.

Visited during a snowy and icy day, so the path was very slippery, but the guard fence was placed very well to hold on to. The walk through was not very long, and does not take that much energy, except for one hill that does not have stairs.
Highly recommend the place to anyone who appreciates nature. The views are amazing.

Relaxed rooms & elegant suites in a refined hotel housed in a castle, plus a restaurant & a spa.
Beautifully restored manor house with lots of antique furniture. Lovely from in and out plus quiet location with a big garden. Popular location for different events. Attentive personnel and good breakfast.
Igor Fabjan — Google review
I am giving 4 stars only because of the restaurant, really. 3 stars for hotel.
Room: 2/5 stars
Although we stayed here in off season (winter) the Princess room costs a fortune for what it is! And it is just outdated room with antique furniture. Ceilings are cracking, bathroom has either too hot or too cold water, uncomfortable old bed, noises from the water pipes... the list goes on. Even in 3 star hotels I have seen better.
And interior is gloomy and dark, not my cup of tea. Dissapointment.
Breakfast in bed: 3 /5 stars
SPA: 2/5 stars (although they will be having a steam sauna and other updates, so that might raise the overall spa level)
Restaurant: 4/5 stars
In my opinion, restaurant is the best reason to visit Dikļi! A gem amongst restaurants around this area. Menu is local as it can get, interesting flavor combinations. Been here twice in autumn/winter and definitely planning to visit again in summer, when the restaurant is located in another room with a terrace.

It used to be fantastic hotels years ago, high quality and great customer service. Now, mattress is hard and old, no mattress cover-it is not hygenic!!! It is 4* hotel, and to my understanding should have by default complimentary water and bathroom essentials-shower cap, shampoo, shower gel, body lotion at minimum. Sorry to say, but no water and shower cap, conditionet, body lotion you can buy for 1€ in reception. Seriously?????Should i think it forehand tbat i will need it??

Valmiermuižas alus darītava is a unique countryside brewery and restaurant located outside the town. The cozy atmosphere of the place resembles a countryside house, offering a spacious restaurant and a shop where visitors can purchase local goods such as bio cosmetics, cheese, sweets, beer, wine, strong spirits, and souvenirs. The restaurant prides itself on using seasonal products to create high-quality dishes dominated by vegetables. Visitors have praised the delicious food and accommodating staff.
The atmosphere of the place is really good!
I loved their tables outside with nice surrounding. The service was one of the nicest I’ve experienced in Latvia. Burger was good (not the best for this price but still good). The variety of beer is awesome.
There’s also a shop with their product where you can buy pretty cool things.

This is a unique place outside the town, which has it's own cozy atmosphere of the countryside house. There is a brewery building and a spacious Restaurant, as well as a shop, where you can buy some local goods - Bio cosmetics, cheese, sweets, beer and wine, some strong spirits and souvenirs.
The prices at the restaurant are worth the quality of the food, because they make everything from the seasonal products, so vegetables definitely dominate in the menu.
We tried three different dishes and their beer ice cream - everything was fresh and delicious, and the waiters can also advise you some beers to pair with the food. Don't miss the chance to use such an opportunity!
Even though the service is quite slow, it doesn't really matter, because there are many things to do there, walk around, enjoy the sun or a warm summer evening.

Fantastic place to visit for children and also for adults. Loads of wooden sculptures, they all are interactive, so you can have a looooot of fun playing different unusual games. Entrance costs 6 eur which is totaly worth it. Can take some food with you to do some nice picnic there.

Don’t miss this weird but fun place! It’s an unmissable opportunity for the most bizarre day of your lives! Bring cash to pay for your tickets. I don't recommend the big labyrinth for kids because it is full of rude sculptures. The rest is great and the wooden games are very cleverly made!

Firstly no car park, spaces for a few cars at the side. There is no place to pay just a man who comes to greet you and wants €6 who may be the owner. You will not get a ticket (I suspect no tax is being paid!).
The area is very much for children, with lots of very lovely wooden sculptures and simple activities. There is 1 toilet which is on the road and was full with flies, so avoid! There is nowhere to buy an ice cream or a cold drink. There is nowhere to eat.
The owner said we had to be 18 to go into the labyrinth. When we did go into the labyrinth we were shocked to see lots of explicit wooden sculptures. But what was more shocking was that people were walking into the labyrinth with children. Why would you put such a thing in the middle of a children’s playground?? I can only wonder about the owner! Children and this sort of thing just do not go together!! When we asked the owner why children were going into the labyrinth he just said that it’s up to the parents!
Overall I’m not sure what to think. Anyway, go around the corner on the main road and go through the trees, that way you can get in for free and decide for yourselves.

Loved the spa. Because we stayed there in middle of the week, the spa was really quiet and felt super private. Loved the saunas and outdoor swimming pool.

Long time we wanted to be here. Once drove past and came to see, we liked it. And here came to celebrate my husband’s birthday. In addition to the atmosphere of the castle, we enjoyed excellent spa and great food in the restaurant. But I have to note the downsides: rice porridge is not made from rice, the day after the arrival there was no cleaning in our room (although friends cleaned up), in the part of the restaurant, where the dinner was very crowded, bustle, no sense of parade. Steak knives brought back after it was served. Despite the fact that we had suites, the design in them is strange (but then we saw the numbers in the next building and it became clear that all this). The designer mixed incompatible styles and the performance of the repairs also raises questions. And finally, my husband had a birthday, usually hotels give wine and sweets, and here nothing. But thanks for the spa, the food and the fine coffee!

+ luxurious and clean
+ private and quiet
+ wide range of saunas available
+ nothing to do there for kids, thus no loud kids running around (a plus for us, negative for families)
- the general air in the spa and the big pool were too cold in our opinion (29C, we prefer 32+C)
- no food or snack options from the bar - only drinks and smoothies
- old school locks in a new spa. should use some sort of magnetic chip system which would allow tracking for bar payments as well. currently the number on the key was asked when getting drinks from the bar

Doesn’t live up to its expectations. Service was unfriendly, lousy and slow. The SPA has a good variety but was overcrowded. There wasn’t enough tables available for breakfast either. The rooms are spacious and cozy. Food was average at most.

Wonderful castle which has rooms in an alternate building so make sure you check where do you have the room. It has great parking and exquisite spa option. The restaurant is really busy on weekends, book a table in advance! We got a table at 10pm. The service over there was great though but the prices are quite high, considering it's rular location.
Overall it's a great place to stay for a weekend getaway to the place with incredible scenery and views.

(Translated by Google) We saw this attraction by chance when we were driving from Pärnu to Valga, we looked around quickly, only at home we read what kind of castle it was. So here is the text from the guidebook. We also learned that if you go further through the park, there are caves there. Parking is free. There were few visitors.
"..The ruins of the Order's castle in Helm are located on a steep hill near the Pärnu-Valga highway. This fortress was most likely built in the first half of the 14th century and now all that remains of it are high walls made of rubble stone with empty window gaps. Tradition says that for to give the fortress additional strength, a young virgin was walled up in the wall. Should we believe such legends? It depends on who you like! At different times, the fortress was ruled by Germans, Russians, Lithuanians and Swedes. The latter destroyed it in 1658.
Good to know: * In the valley near the hill, the Doctor's spring gurgles - its water is believed to cure seven diseases.

Quite interesting place to see for a short break from a car ride. Caves in the sandstone used to consist of multiple passages to seven different rooms, but some rooms have collapsed now. The cave used to be called "hell" during old times. Passages were made by spring water, however, people have expanded them and used them for a refuge. As the passages are quite low, it is harder to see much inside. Personally, it seemed a bit scary to crawl :)

My plan was to come here in summer but I just couldn't wait! It is an amazing quiet place for nature lovers and adventurers as myself.
The first thing I noticed was silence. Although the caves are located quite close to the highway, the minute you step into the forest/park, the noise disappears.
My hosts were a couple of deers; I also noticed some other animals signs on the snow 😁
I didn't have enough courage to explore the caves inside because I was alone, however, next time I'll take someone with me. Maybe the legend about the Devil inside scared me, I don't know.
Anyway, it is rather easy to get there: take a bus nr 80 from Tõrva or walk for ca 35 minutes from the city; if you come by car, there is a parking lot right next to the park with the caves.
Definitely recommend this place for visiting.

This place has a great collection of military vehicles, and the owners are doing great work in restoring them. The inside exhibits are lacking English translations which is a shame, but understand they are yet to receive any funding to help with this. They hold a annual festival each year which looked like it was going to be amazing if you are a military buff. Nice little town to stop in for lunch on way to Tallin too.
Dan — Google review
Our Treveller.ee tour group made a stop at this military museum in Valga, a town situated on the Estonia Latvian Border part of the town is in Estonia, part is in Latvia. The museum is located in the Estonian half of the town. This explains why most of the signs in the museum are Estonian.
You will not see many military weapons that post date World War 2 here. The military vehicles outside are very outdated and in bad repair as you might expect.
Weapons from Estonia, Russia and Nazi Germany are exhibited.
The most compelling exhibits are not those that display walls of weapons, but those that include mannequins in uniforms, some fighting on the battlefield strewn with shells of used munitions.
I would not say this is a kid friendly museum for any child lower than the age of conscription.

Pukhya Church was built in 1499, it was a three-nave house church. The vaults of the central part of the building have been destroyed. After numerous renovations, the choir room and vaulted ceiling have been preserved in their original form. The western façade of the church deserves attention, where a richly profiled portal with numerous pediment niches and a console is presented, the destroyed part of which has been replaced by a wooden structure. Also interesting is the building next to the stairs in the southwestern corner of the church. Next to the church there is an old barn and opposite it, behind the community center, is the Puhja cemetery. Not far from the cemetery, next to the road to Elva, there grows a century-old tree - the Syti birch, the circumference of which is 3 meters and the height is 22 meters.
