How long is the drive from Bogota to Villa de Leyva?
The direct drive from Bogota to Villa de Leyva is 97 mi (156 km), and should have a drive time of 2 hrs 56 mins in normal traffic.
If you’re going on a road trip from Bogota to Villa de Leyva, we did the research for you and compiled some great stops along the way — with top places to visit like Alquiler de Bicicletas Biking Bogotá and Biblioteca Digital / Repositorio Institucional UNAL (Hemeroteca Nacional Universitaria), or the ever-popular Museo Nacional de Colombia.
The top stops along the way from Bogota to Villa de Leyva (with short detours) are Salt Cathedral, Parque de la 93, and Lake Guatavita. Other popular stops include Pozos Azules, Alquiler de Bicicletas Biking Bogotá, and Villa de Leyva Main Square.
The Museo Nacional de Colombia is an impressive museum with a vast collection of artifacts from throughout history. It's home to pieces from the pre-Columbian era up to recent art, and provides a fascinating look into the country's diverse culture.
Great place to learn about the country's past and present. Weekend is more crowded but line up goes by quickly. The visit took me about 2hrs if you skim thru and just focus on few things of your interest.

Nice staff, lack of any non Spanish signage or any other information though. The 4,000 peso or $1 entry fee is very cheap but so is everything in Bogota. Not the most interesting of exhibits but good enough for a two hour visit. Nice shop, toilets and cafe on site.

The National Museum is deserving of its name given that it’s exhibits focus almost entirely on the history and art of Colombia 🇨🇴, and given the diversity of material on display. For me, it is a handsome venue which I enjoyed waking through, and an interesting re-purposing of a prison. However, I feel that it is a museum that tries to do too much, leaving the visitor overwhelmed with somewhat of a collage of both meaningful artifacts and less important ephemera beginning with prehistoric antiquities and continuing to the present day. For serious students of Colombia history, however, it contains a lot of material thought and research. Well worth visiting but perhaps best appreciated after a course in Colombian history. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed my visit.

While no nation wants to highlight the dark parts of its history, conquest, Inquisition, slave trade, political warfare, and drug trade seem to all be missing. How can a nation avoid repeating mistakes if it doesn't mention them? English subtitles would be appreciated ( perhaps a QR code on each display)

Great museum. If you don't have time to visit all the other amazing museums in Bogota, the National Museum is a good choice as it contains various themes from the Museum of Gold, Emerald Museum, Botero, Military Museum, etc.
If purchasing your tickets day off, bring cash. The ticket booth does not accept cards.

So, as a foreigner, the experience is a bit limiting because only a small portion of the signs are translated into English, and I couldn't find any audio guides or anything like that. But with Google Translate and a basic knowledge of Spanish, you can make the best of it. The museum covers Colombian history and heritage. There is nice art dispersed among the historical artifacts, and the third level has some nice art, including works by Botero. It currently costs about 10 USD for foreigners.
Bethany Eckert — Google review
A very good museum that explains the history of Colombia and doesn't shy away from the more brutal times or paintings.
Extremely affordable and even had an exhibit of the Santo and Kaliman comic books, which was quite interesting to see.

Beautiful museum full of history!! You see all different art, gold and just very interesting. Also good to note that on Sundays it is free entry! Must visit when going to Bogotá
R Gallardo — Google review
It's been one of the best museums I've visited ever. Free entrance on Sundays, interactive exposition. It's mostly about Colombia, but it tells about history, lately conflicts, geography, and botanic. I was there the entire afternoon and I needed to rush to finish.
Evelyn Laitz — Google review
It’s certainly a good place to visit as a local as it holds and unlocks a lot of political and religious history of Colombia. I understand that what is now the museum building was historically a prison. There’s a lot to see certainly and there’s a tour guide. If you’re a tourist and don’t speak Spanish like me, then the guide’s narration might not be helpful except if you have your own translator as an additional guide. The museum could generally be better organized and put together.

Beautiful museum. Takes a lot of time to see everything (3 floors), so be ready to be there for hours. Open your eyes very well because every inch is full of history. Definitely, I'll be back. A good thing is that in the backyard there's a coffee place, so you can take a break and continue. Wednesdays from 3-5pm is free.
Mely C — Google review
Interactive displays made it nice for children and adults. There were a few pieces of pottery you could touch to get a sense of form and material.
We had limited time so we visited the National museum because they had some gold, some emeralds, and some Bolteros. A little bit of everything and more.
Only $10 entry for travelers.
Kimberly Beck — Google review
Came to learn more about Colombian history and art. With 90% of the information written in Spanish, we didn't get the context to learn and enjoy it. The few translations were verbose and pretentious. I expected more from a national museum.
The art exhibition and the presentation was excellent. I enjoyed seeing so many original artworks, especially Botero. In addition, the museum building itself has a fascinating history, which they easily could have elaborated on.
Marius Svaleng Andresen — Google review
Worth visiting. A large museum housed on a former prison cell. Has an excellent collection. Very informative. Gives you an insight to the rich culture and history of Colombia. The exhibits are very straight forward. Has bits of everything. An hour or two is not enough to explore the exhibits. The ticket is a bit expensive for tourists but is worth the experience. Has a souvenir shop and a coffeeshop at the exit.

These museums is great! It was interesting to see full history of Colombia before Spanish occupation and after during colonial years.
Artur Preobraženski — Google review
This museum was free. I'm not sure if this is always free or if it was that I arrived 45 minutes before closing. It was interesting to see architecture both outside and in. It was originally a prison.
In A Nutshell:
-Biking Bogota located in the very nice neighborhood called Ciudad Salitre Oriental was the perfect place to rent a bike for the day.
-I was able to email them to make a reservation before my trip to Bogota a couple weeks in advance.
-I knew I was going to need a bike for the Sunday "Ciclovia de Bigota" where the city closes down large swaths of roads to allow bikes/people exercise, it's such a memorable & fun experience.
-Paulo was very friendly & helped make sure my bike was the right fit.
-She also provided a helmet, bike lock & a map.
-The price for 4 hours was around $20, which was very good.
Overall, I highly suggest renting your bike from Biking Bogota you won't be disappointed!

We had a great time biking la ciclovía on Sunday! The process to rent bikes from Biking Bogotá was easy and smooth. Everyone was so kind. We were given a map with directions and time time estimations for how long it would take, which was really helpful since we rented bikes for 4 hours. You can rent bikes for longer, but la ciclovía ends at 2:00pm so we felt 4 hours was best for us. I would definitely recommend biking Bogotá and look forward to renting again the next time we visit!

Definitely I enjoyed renting a bike with them. They don´t have a store open to the public, but you can call them first and ckeck if they have bikes available or you can book one in advance through their website. The team guy show me in a city map no rush different places and sightseings. Bikes, helmet and lock provided were fine. Reliable people if it's your first time in town!!

Great experience!! I wanted to rent a bike for Bogota's Sunday La Ciclovía and Diego got me hooked up immediately! It's such a beautiful city to bike around and explore, and Diego gave me guidance on scenic routes for the day (all of which had food and juice vendors along the way). The bike was also brand new which I've never experienced with a bike rental. I was out and about for 5 hours and it was a perfect sunny day to explore the city. 100% recommend Biking Bogota (and la ciclovía!!).
Jen Olsen — Google review
Great bike rental right near the Ciclovía. The bikes were well maintained. They gave us a map and recommended a couple of different routes for us. For an urban cruiser I paid $35,000 for 4 hours which is much cheaper than other locations.

Close to the airport and perfect for long layovers during ciclovia days! Paola was great and very responsive. It's located in an apartment building without a storefront sign; just go in and ask at the front desk for Biking Bogotá. Bikes aren't fancy but the price and service are great!

Great time on the Ciclovia on Sunday. Renting bikes from Biking Bogotá was a breeze. The prices are reasonable, the bikes are good, and they made sure we knew where to go and how to get the most out of the day. Definitely get an early start because Ciclovia ends at 2pm.

The Jose Celestino Mutis Botanical Garden is a beautiful 20-acre green space in Bogota, Colombia that showcases a variety of ecosystems and plants from around the country. There are beautiful gardens, a waterfall, and numerous orchids. The entrance fee is reasonable, and there's also a restaurant and cafe on site. The special exhibition in the greenhouse is well worth the extra pesos.
An excellent way to spend a different day. It offers a variety of plants and environments with gorgeous scenery.

Beautiful Botanical Gardens in Bogota, Colombia. Stunning flowers, plants, trees, information all inside an climate controlled atmosphere with breathtaking views both from below and above. So much to see that you'll want to start very early. There is a small cafe for lunch which is perfect. So much architectural and fascinating views on superb landscapes decorated with wildlife information. A must-see if you are in this amazing country.

This botanical garden was very beautiful and breathtaking. Everything was so well maintained, and it had plants from different regions of Colombia. The water features were calming, and I just sat there enjoying it all. The roses were bigger than my fist and there is a cafe for refreshments and snacks. My coffee was amazing. If you love plants, do not miss this one if you are ever in Bogotá, Colombia.

We had a really nice day out here. The grounds are large and very tranquil. The greenhouses and plants were beautiful.
There is a fun cafe where you can get a sandwich and a coffee. There was also a strip of market stalls when we went.
The queues can be long so I recommend booking in advance.

Absolutely incredible! Highly recommend doing both the botanical and the tropical gardens. The price to enter is extremely cheap and the gardens are well maintained. We look forward to returning again.
Dylan Dingels — Google review
I visited Bogotá's botanical garden with low expectations. I'd recently visited the botanical gardens in Medellin and thought that this couldn't possibly compare to that... and I was right to a degree.
In Bogotá, the gardens don't look very natural. They look like the gardens in a rich person's mansion. Having said that, there are still many wonderful plants, yes and flowers here. I was pleasantly surprised.
There's also a wonderful set of climate-controlled tropical houses, that hold some pretty spectacular plants. For tourists, it costs 5,000 pesos to enter and an additional 10,000 pesos to enter the tropical houses.
I'd say that it's worth paying the extra, as it's not much and there are some very unusual and rare plants in there. One warning though... protect your camera lens in there... there are lots of places where water is sprayed onto the plants and it gets everywhere.

Totally worth it. Got to see a bunch of wild hummingbirds!!
The domes were good. Needs more signs on plants and trees.
Went late afternoon, was quiet enough to enjoy all species.
They also have a cute veggie patch.
It sucks to pay more if you're a foreigner. Outdated practice.
Anyway, highly recommended.

Great space to wander for a few hours (plan for at least 2). Closes earlier than we expected, staff recommended to visit the building areas first as they do close on time but the park around you can continue to walk around for a while.
Lots of construction so it would be exciting to see what new areas they will have shortly!

They did a super job decorating the gardens for the Christmas season with beautiful lights and informative visuals that can be appreciated during the day, but it's at night when the neon and other lighting really pop. Not understanding Spanish well, I was still about to learn quite a bit just from the visuals, then could use Google Translate to understand scene recordings for the rest. Will definitely visit again.
Jéan T — Google review
Peaceful park, though there was a lot of construction happening.
Seemed to be more a collection of plants than a curated garden. The concept of the Tropicario was interesting and did a nice job of recreating the different environments.

Beautiful botanical gardens with 4 indoor conservatories. Plan to spend around 2 hours exploring the gardens and reading through the biome information in the conservatory center.
I will note that much of the gardens were under construction, so we didn’t see as much as we’d like. Also, while most trees have name plaques, none of the flowers outside of the conservatories have any. We would have liked to know more information about those plants.

93 Park is a beautiful green space located in the heart of the city centre. It is perfect for a leisurely afternoon stroll and has various restaurants, cafes and bars surrounding it. This is a great place to spend the weekend as some restaurants have turned into clubs. There are also two Starbucks situated within the park!

The park boasts a plethora of food choices, with standout options like Starbucks and local options, providing an exquisite culinary experience. From local flavors to international delights, there's a dish to satisfy every palate.
The beauty of the scenery is truly captivating, creating a serene escape amidst the urban hustle. Lush greenery, well-maintained paths, and charming water features make it an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll or a relaxing afternoon picnic.
I particularly loved the amount, size, and greenery of the trees in this particular area.

It’s a beautiful little park for kids... it has areas assigned by age group with signs, it also has security guards. The sand pit is great, along with the boat, and the climbing spider ball. Kids absolutely love this park! I wish they would close it off with small/short gate since it’s a very business oriented area and a lot of grown ups also like to hang out. The grassy area has a lot of events but it’s mostly for dogs and grown ups.

Usaquén used to be a small town back in the day before it became a part of Bogota. Though, today it is more urban than ever surrounded by restaurants and bars, the architecture is still small townish. Usaquen Sunday Market is a weekly gathering of outdoor vendors selling arts, crafts, food and gifts, as well as entertainment. It's an excellent place to buy luxury jewellery products, artisanal handbags and street coffee. This market is especially enjoyable to visit for the experience alone; it's set against the Andean mountains on the pretty cobblestone streets of Usaquen.
Spent 2 afternoons meandering through this market. Overall, the vendors were super friendly and not high pressure sales. We found some things not very unique (can buy the same things in the USA) but then there are other things that are handcrafted and unique. Loved our time there. Usaquen is a sweet little village on the city's edge. Definitely recommend

This is a great area to go for tourists! Plenty of great spots to eat! From typical Colombian food to sushi, Italian, and places to get coffee and deserts. The walking street is by far my favorite. There are usually vendors just on the street everyday of the week. But the actual market is on Sundays. Lots of cool handmade bags and other artisan crafts. I definitely will be coming back in the future!

Pleasant old colonial flavor of old Bogotá. Great place to walk around and shop for art & craft products. Dinning options are quite good, the rustic atmosphere matches the colonial atmosphere. Shopping at the adjacent Hacienda de Usaquen mall is diversed, though you'll need a map because it is designed like a maze which can be confusing. That Hacienda does need some renovation to make it a bit more appealing.

Huge outdoor market with lots of stalls selling handicrafts and food and much more. Compared to other markets such as Plaza de mercado 7 de agosto prices are higher. For example, we bought mangosteens in 7 de agosto market for 10,000 COP per pound, but in Usaquén flea market the fruit vendors asked for 20,000 COP per pound. Nevertheless, we tried some empanadas for 6,500 COP each and chicken skewers for 8,000 COP each.
The market is held Saturday and Sunday, so if you're in Bogotá during a weekend, it's worth visiting. We took Uber on the way to the market and a taxi on the way back. The taxi driver told me the cost is 2,800 COP plus whatever comes up on his meter. The meter shows a number such as 73 and then he has a card that converts the number to pesos. Anyway, bottom line is I paid 16,000 COP for Uber and 12,800 COP for taxi.

Amazing adorable market with so many beautiful, stunning and amazing merchandise from gorgeous, artistic jewellery to handcrafted fridge magnets, to paintings and artistic dishware, even foods typical to Bogotá… I was so stunned by the beauty of this market that I almost cried. I stumbled upon it by accident, and went there in the evening. I recommend going after 6 PM as all the lights above make this place looks spectacular. I am planning to go back tomorrow and bring cash with me. Some vendors, accept credit cards, but most only except cash. This is a must visit place when you are in Bogota.

Lots of souvenir items you can get at any tourist spot. And became samey as you’ll see a lot of the stalls repeating the same items. There were some local artists with hand made craft, but very few.
They do accept credit card payments which was nice.
Mark Hernandez — Google review
One of Bogota's best markets, you can spend the day visiting all the booths where you can find just about anything. We enjoy seeing all the unique crafts for sale at reasonable prices. If you are looking for unique personal gifts, this is the place to go. There are also very good restaurants located in the area offering a wide variety of excellent dining options. The market is open Saturday and Sunday, so make sure to plan accordingly. Can be quite crowded, but never so much so to be a deterrent. There are also many street performers and shows in the square park, so make sure to stop and watch. Weather in Bogota can be fickle, so make sure to bring an umbrella or raincoat.

Very busy shopping area that is traditional and beautiful. It has its all unique style. I recommend this as a tourist destination.

I really loved this place! Lots of crafts particularly on Saturdays and Sundays. I found the prices to be the most reasonable around and people are willing to negotiate especially if you are paying cash vs. credit card. I found the skill and variety of goods to be one of the best in the area (in my limited and humble opinion).

Don Joaco later dedicated himself to giving interviews to the news without taking responsibility for anything.
So be careful with this tourist company that does charge but then... they disappear.

Great place to visit on a lazy day at San Francisco / La Vega. Beautiful nature, quiet and friendly helpful staff.
Witnessed the release of a sloth in the reservation after being rescued somewhere in the colder areas of La Vega.
Three paths to walk, easy, but need to watch your step. It can be muddy and slippery.
Great place to spot birds, tortoises, butterflies, fireflies, and much more if patient and quiet enough.
Looked after contractors from the municipality, it looks tidy and well kept.
Please leave your dog at home to not scare away wildlife.

2 different options: 1- Drive from Bogotá(1hr and 20 min) Check out the lake and have lunch in La Vega.( Many more options than at the lake) 2- For enthusiast bikers and hikers, ride your bike from La Vega to the lake. (1.2 hour climb) then hike your way up to the peak of the mountain next to the lake (40 min climb).

It is a small park that can be visited between 2 to 4 hours. It has different tracks surrounding the lagoon. You can also do birdwatching around the lagoon an inside the forest. We saw cormorant playing on top of trunks inside the lagoon. Some other birds but as I am not an expert, no idea about their names. Bring some binoculars or a good camera to do some proper birdwatching. Even in a hot day the forest is fresh, also bring protection for the mosquitos. They like fresh city blood a lot. Also good to dress in colors similar to the forest to get closer to the birds. They sing all they long.

Chic, contemporary retail center with 3 floors of stores, plus a food court & movie theater.
A very good place on the outskirts of Chia and a very open place with a lot of shops and a good food court. A very spacious open car park, and a shuttle to nearby places are some of the highlights. There are very good options to spend the time with kids. No wonder this is always crowded.

Overall is fine, but, the electric cars charging station is not what this shopping mall should have. One spot per charger type. Nobody from the staff of the mall is able to organize charging intervals, so, we can share it in a better way.

Great mall. Has controlled entrance, many shops, kids areas to play, fast food available, have to pay for parking, map wifi didn't connect to my phone, but there were other businesses that has free Wi-Fi. Dogs are allowed in the mall. Has a supermarket on the ground floor and you can get wine there. Good options for food and drinks here. Mall is super modern and looks like they are trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

I had to walk almost all the mall to change floors, is no visible the emergency exits, the elevators are to far, in not so comfortable to walk, the parking lot has fare. The mobile signal is terrible
On the other hand, it has brand shop stores and the infrastructure is nice

Incredible stores, with an excellent space to walk accompanied by family, friends, make this shopping center different in Chia. A large parking lot, whose entrances are very well framed, in such a way that there are no inconveniences for entry. Italian, Mediterranean restaurants perfectly combine the atmosphere for shopping, coffee or simply enjoy the view of the top floor.

Probably one of the best Theme Parks in Colombia, full of history facts, educational interactive attractions for kids and adults. You're allowed to take food into the park, which is rare nowadays, and they even have plenty of places to have a lovely picnic whilst admiring the pristine green areas and awesome buildings. The Tash Mahal replica is outstandingly beautiful, inside you'll find an amazing spiral walkway which takes you to the top. Perfect for content creators. Please make sure to keep the park clean by taking your rubbish and disposing of it properly. Well organized and a pleasure to walk around. Kids and adults alike will love it. Secure ample parking. Highly recommend.
The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira is an exceptional underground cathedral that can be reached by guided tours and features a souvenir shop. This architectural masterpiece is carved out of salt and stone, situated 500 feet below ground in an active salt mine, less than an hour's drive from Bogota. The Salt Cathedral offers a unique experience as it showcases stunning beauty and remarkable architecture.
Definitely the best place I have ever been to in my entire life. It was something that I never seen it. If you are a gamer, you might feel like you are in a dungeon that you can get the final weapon or a place to upgrade your classes.

Super cool attraction, worth a visit if you're in the area. The audio tour is definitely the way to go, and allows you to explore the space at your own pace. The whole tour is a bit of a hike, but it's not very strenuous and should be achievable for most people. The sculptures are beautifully lit and the history of the place is very interesting.
Matthew Reed — Google review
One of the coolest experiences we've had from a spiritual and architectural point of view. The work that went into this is amazing. My advice is to ditch the tour group and go at your own pace. It's much more personal this way. There are also many other great attractions, stores, and a spa inside the mine. It is a must see for all!
Jordan Joachim — Google review
I went to the other salt cathedral in the world, in Poland and liked that one much better than this one. This one was not exactly what I expected. For foreigners the tickets are around $30. The tour guide only spoke in spanish, but they did have an audio guide to purchase. It's a good idea to bring headphones for that. The first part of the tour is just crosses representing the stations of the cross. The big cathedral area was cool, but the rest of it was very commercialized... shops, coffee stands, food for sale.. I was kinda bummed it wasn't more rustic or mine/cave like. I mean they even had a movie theater down there. On the positive side, I didn't feel claustrophobic at all as the ceilings are high. Also, this mine is pet friendly and they have carts you can put your pets in as you do the tour.
Jennifer Bachman — Google review
Awesome place; really a wonder. Once you start walking into the mountain, you get a sort of sacred feeling out of all this pilgrimage through the stages of Jesus crucifixion.
I got the regular ticket, which gives you access to almost everything, but if I were to go back, I would take the premium package to have all the miner experience.
Also, make sure to buy some souvenirs to support local businesses, as this town literally survives on the salt mines.
Cam Urreat — Google review
Beautiful must see attraction. The tour was pretty informative and they even offer you an English audio device if you can’t speak Spanish. I also met some wonderful people that were traveling from other countries. It’s a sight to see.
O'Niel Anderson — Google review
Tours are available. Multiple languages are available. We had brought the premium ticket which gives you access to mine for salt, see other exhibits, and explore additional museums. It was preserved well and we had been able to spend over three hours here and still had not seen everything. The cathedral is beautiful after hearing how it was built. Active mining was also going on and it looks as if they are adding more! City tours are also available with the premium ticket price.

Truly unique but it’s not worth the time and money. We hired a driver to take us from bogota. With tragic it took over 2 hours. Then they charged 113,000 per person so it’s very overpriced. All you see are crosses of the same type and size, a few coloured LED- lights. Take the stairs down from the angel to the cathedral… it was beautiful took my mind off the 2 hour ride back.
A.L. Harris — Google review
100% must-see when visiting Bogota! There are only 2 Salt Cathedrals in the world - this one in Bogota & one in Poland. The history of each station of the cross & how it was constructed is fascinating. Audio guide in several languages, including English! Bring your own plug-in headphones. My 69 year old mother & I did (age 42) this with no problems with the terrain. Probably plan for this to be the only major activity to do that day. The rest of your day, enjoy the town!
At the end, a beautiful chapel where real weddings & weekly masses take place! Worth every penny of the admission price. So glad I didn't miss out on this! Bring water & wear comfortable walking shoes. I purchased the basic plan (see photos) and it was perfect - included the train ride at the end so you didn't have to walk the entire length back & extra small museums at the end of the Salt Cathedral tour. About 3km (roughly 2mi) total walking. Cute gift shop as you exit & some snack vendors like popcorn & ice cream.
Sarah Nally — Google review
Amazing, even though super touristic. Yes the ticket is a bit pricey, but IMHO it’s worth it as the visit really takes 1.30-2 hours to do properly. It’s so weird the shopping mall at the bottom of the cathedral… less shops would have made the place feel more authentic. Nonetheless, you can walk inside, and then go and visit Zipaquira which is a real Colombian “village” and enjoy there as well.

On a recent trip to Columbia, I decided to visit the Salt Cathedral. It's located about an hour and a half outside of Bogota, and it's a very scenic and relaxing drive. The countryside actually reminded me of Vermont in the summer.
The entrance was somewhat unassuming, but after going 180 meters down into the mines, you'll start seeing the true beauty of this place. The stations of the cross, the Cathedral and the many, many other intricate religious displays here are simply amazing!
My guide, Samara, spoke excellent English, and we had a very good conversation throughout the whole experience. 😊

The place is huge. The attractions are diverse. The pictures are breathtaking. The bathrooms are cuper clean.
Things not to miss
1. Tour with audio guide (available in several languages)
2. Every hour (on the dot), there is a small 5m light display on the main church.
3. Movie explaining everything about the mine (about 20m every 30m) in 3D (on the left)
3. On the right, still water makes a mirror effect with the ceiling, which is illuminated with LED lights of different colors. **the earlier you get there, you might be able to take videos with no one in the picture.
4. There are a few historical museum-like patches, I saw one recapitulating gem excavation.
5. Further down on the left, on the way to the bathrooms, there is a small shop where you can try a combination of salt/oils for hand exfoliation and buy them 😋

It’s a bit of a drive north of Bogotá. There are lots of different salt cathedrals. After the 4th or 5th we just started wandering around. I believe there is also an available tour of an actual salt mine which in hindsight I regret not inquiring about as I think that would have been interesting.

This salt cathedral is the most amazing spot so far in my Colombia travel. The tunnels and cross are just amazing. We are lucky to see a lightning show and a wedding ceremony. I wholeheartedly recommend this place for anyone visiting Colombia. They did change different prices for the local people and foreigners.
Henry Wang — Google review
Overall super impressive from the last time we where here which was about 10 years ago. There is stores, massage places, coffee places and of course the churches inside. I didn’t expect it to have developed so much. I do want to point out that price increase for foreigns, I know that countries all over the world do this too so I can’t really complain about it. I live in the US but was born in Colombia so this didn’t apply to me which I am glad, but I still find it weird and pretty unfair. Especially considering not all foreigns come from locations where their currency is higher than pesos so it can be expensive. On the other hand, I did like that there were translation audios for those who spoke another language (not sure what languages they had). And this is more of my personal style, but I also wasn’t a fan of having a tour person for the first half of our visit, we had a big group and it took a long time. I typically like to visit locations peacefully and to learn about it, I rather read from posters or maybe an audio. This might not apply to many but I still wanted to point that out. Even so I still loved the experience and would visit again in the future since it’s something very special and different from many tourist destinations. If this is your first time traveling to Colombian this is definitely a must go place.

Don’t make the mistake that I did, and make sure you get your ticket first, before standing in the line to get into the cathedral. If you come to the Cathedral, on the bus, you can’t miss the tickets stand. However, if you walked up to the Cathedral like I did, the ticket stand is easier to miss. It’s actually a short walk (20minutes) up to the Cathedral from the train stop. Steep, but nice.
The staff was incredibly helpful and let me skip the line to enter the cathedral the second time around, since I had to go back and buy a ticket. They also provided me with an audible tour in English, since all the “live” tours were in Spanish.

It’s nice to walk down through the mines. I especially enjoyed seeing the emeralds sticking out of the walls in the mine tunnel display. It certainly is different than seeing them mined. The tree of life is incredible. And the show was amazing. The tour was in Spanish, which I don’t speak. And the place was a blast. It will be in nice to do it all over again.

Many friends and locals spoke highly of it and recommended that we went. We are glad we did. Make sure to purchase tickets ahead of time as it will help you cut the line as it was fairly long. Bring a sweater and tennis shoes. The floor is fairly uneven and it gets pretty cool as we work your way down We are glad we did all of these things.
When you go, take your time before you go in to take pictures of the beautiful statues and the view. It is breathtaking up there. Also, stop at some of the souvenir shops. Once you make your way towards the end, there are some coffee shops where you can rest before you start your way up which you can make it by foot or by train. We recommend the train and there is no additional cost to it.

The salt cathedral is considered one of the top tourist destinations in Colombia. This attraction is carved out of a huge salt deposit that has been operating as a salt mine for two centuries. There is a small gift shop area that carries a small, but nice collection of emerald jewelry. This is a unique and interesting visit.

A beautiful church that is an excellent example of colonial architecture. With wonderful side altars and columns. The Plaza which it resides in is also very pretty. The church definitely suffered from a poor renovation after the Second Vatican Council, as the altar that the church has now is uninspiring. It is for that last reason that the church gets 4 stars instead of 5, for its poor renovation.

The salt mine is a good tourist destination for religious people, Catholic, and anyone who appreciates and is curious about mining. Wear comfortable and non slippery shoes. You'll be walking on rocks that can be a little slippery. Bring your own toilet paper, I couldn't find any in their public restrooms which are quite far from the entrance of the mine. There's really good free WiFi inside the mine, a plus.
If it rains it's hard to find refuge. And the walking paths are a bit rough on your knees. Beautiful rocks, lots of climbing spots and great place to walk your dog.

A great climbing area just an hour north of Bogotá! It has fantastic views of the surrounding area. There's over 3 kilometers of rock with routes range from 5.6 - 5.14a; they tend to be rated higher than they should be though, a 5.10c is more of a 5.9, a 5.9 is more of an easy 5.8. Some of the best sandstone with amazing jugs, crimps and cracks. The majority of the routes are trad with some bolts for sport routes. There's also one aid route. There's plenty of places to eat nearby with one gear store as well.

This is the main church of this beautiful town. The architecture is imposing on the rest of the town. The spire is so huge that it is visible from a long distance. Wow! Wow! Wow! A stunning church dedicated to Our Lady, a must-visit for those on a spiritual pilgrimage or who just love good architecture and religious art. The side altars, the historic art, the stained glass, the frescos, and the altar are just all magnificent. You can also just feel the presence of Our Lady there. Chinquinquira is a bit cold so make sure to bring a jacket! The church is in a bit of disrepair though in some areas, which hopefully will one day be addressed. It seems that a lack of respect or value is given to the historical value and architectural beauty of the town, which hopefully will one day change. A gem of a town, come and see it before more of the historical buildings disappear.

This is spot where the colonial forces finally defeated the Spanish and Colombia with the surrounding countries gained their independence. A small monument but well maintained and worth a stop if only to appreciate the terrain in which the forces had to fight.

A bit chilly first of all so bring a jacket. How anti-climatic! When one pictures the Bridge where the last big battle for independence was for New Granada, one does not think of a small bridge like this one haha! In any case, the area was super interesting and is very recommended for anyone looking to interact with Colombian history. The monument to Bolivar offers a sensational view and is very beautiful, as well as the monument to General Santander. My only complaint is that the highway very obviously cuts off what used to be one park dedicated the independence. While I didn't walk around the other side, I saw it through the car window and I must say that some of the monuments are in a lamentable state. Hopefully, the government does something about it
I really liked this place, despite being a bit shocking for the people that took me there that they started to charge per car. It seems that it used to be free and now there’s a 15000 COL pesos fee.
The place is quite wide to explore, there a monument to bolivar, the bridge and great views from the top. Also there are toilets, some merchants if you want a drink or something to eat and around the area there are other highlights.
This is one of the most important places to visit in Colombia, I believe, here took place the last battle that would grant Colombia its independence.

Incredible place and cute museum. It makes my heart bleed to see how they encased the Kronosaurus in a strange plastered floor, but at least they saved it from being stolen and brought in some moist european capital

Really nice museum that keeps expanding and growing. They sell themselves as “nonprofit organization” where everything that they collect is used to expand and fund the museum.
Such a young museum and yet already owns a master piece, that also became the reason to be founded. The “Kronosaurus Boyacensis”. Unique of its kind, well kind of, there are other that were found but what makes this one unique is how complete it is and that was kept through the years in the exact same place where it was found! Quite impressive!
The ticket price is average and I strongly recommend to wait until the tour, our guide was professional and knew a lot. The museum can be quickly see, you get a brief introduction and then it goes straight to the point.
I really recommend the visit.
Also, there are some nice souvenirs made my locals that use the profits to help their families. They appreciate any contribution that can made. :)

They loaned us a wheelchair for my mother without a deposit.

The best thing to be said about this place is the location if it's a sunny day. We paid for the tour, wine and snacks. When we arrived they pointed us back and forth between buildings before just letting us sit outside. After 45 minutes they bought us two small glasses of wine to taste, one of which had small pieces of cork floating all through it, and some cheese in a plastic container. There was no explanation of the wine in any language (we speak a bit of Spanish) an hour and a bit later, we were the only people there and had had no mention of a tour. We then had to find them to ask about the tour. They said it was only in Spanish and sent us away. Very poor service, average wine at best. Very expensive for what it is. Honestly wouldn't bother, either as someone who does or doesn't speak the language fluently

This was the first time in my life I've thrown wine away. The Merlot smelled of kerosene and was full of sediment. The white looked like water, and both smelled and tasted of a diluted paint stripper. I really hope it wasn't...

A colonial-era cathedral & mansions frame this vast central square, which hosts markets & festivals.
Local Columbia living. Everyone friendly and welcoming. Can feed the birds and have them flying everywhere pretty churches And architecture. A lot of traditional food and customs
A square surrounded by beautiful historic buildings (well, for the most part anyways). The square is clean and gives priority to the pedestrian which is nice. However, the square could be conserved better. For context for those who do not know, Tunja was one of the most important cities during the colonial times in the Viceroyalty of New Granada. That is why it is so sad to see the state of deterioration of historic sites in the city. Hopefully, the government will do a better job of conservation.

A nice square where you can find basically everything you need. Restaurant, bank, church, cafés. Essy to get taxis or buses.
Casa Terracota, located on the outskirts of Villa de Leyva, is a unique and quirky attraction. It is known as the world's largest ceramics structure and was originally conceived by architect Octavio Mendoza Morales as his primary residence. The building project aims to harmoniously merge architecture, design, and other arts and crafts using earth, air, water, and fire to transform fired clay into architecture.
Very interesting tourist stop. It’s a house made of mud, by a local architect. You get a guided tour of this fully functional mud house. They describe everything from the inspiration, to the construction of the building. It’s a great place to visit. Very unique!

Expensive but unique. The house not only looks atypical on the outside, it also doesn't follow the strictly rectilinear floor plans that most modern homes have.

Extraordinary place, hidden from the main road, but very inspiring and ideal for a time break if you ride or for a walk if you are nearby. Moment for beautiful pictures.

Living in it .. I would get bored…but really a masterpiece of environmentally friendly architecture of organic forms reminiscent of the great GAUDI

Some people complain about the price buy I think it is such a unique structure so it is justified. If you like arts, like Barcelona and Gaudi you should stop by. It can be seen in 1h and it was not too crowded. No drone allowed if you were looking to do a video.

This home was made with clay taken from the surface of the property. The craftsmanship is amazing. The tour guide was knowledgeable and had a great personality. The method to fire the clay is impressive. Started in 1999 and finished in 2014.
This home is located in a quite small town. If you like the relaxed pace of small town over the hustle of down town Bogotá then you’ll love this place.

If you are interested in alternative building materials and how they can be applied. This is the place to go.
Plaza Mayor de Villa de Leyva is a popular destination in Colombia, featuring a large cobblestone plaza surrounded by cafes, handicraft shops, and a colonial church. The town offers an opportunity to experience Spanish colonial architecture and picturesque natural surroundings. The plaza's floor is made entirely of rocks and nearby attractions include museums, restaurants, bars, and shops selling local crafts and cuisine. Visitors can escape from everyday stress at this charming location which includes hotels for accommodation.
A must visit place if you come to Colombia. You have the chance to go back in time to a Spanish colonial style town surrounded by beautiful nature, mountains, lots to do in and out of town. The plaza's floor is all made of rocks as it was built centuries ago, but there are wonderful places to go nearby: museums, awesome restaurants and bars and typical food and craftsmanship shops.

ABSOLUTELY the best place to catch the sunset if you're visiting Villa de Leyva. Beautiful expanse of cobblestone surrounded by lovely shops restaurant and let's not forget the church.... Where the bells ring (loudly) at 5:30 and 5:45 calling people to mass. Kinda wish someone had warned me before the first bell... Minor heart attack, but none the less it's a must do if you're in the neighborhood.

I haven't been here in a long time (around 20 years) but it has become a landmark in Colombia. Very crowded and touristic kid of Cartagena. The sellers here are more respectful and don't insist if you don't want to buy something.

World UNESCO site and awesome giant colonial square! It’s a beautiful place to hang out at sunset and have some Miloja!! They’re super cute streets surrounding the square to explore and the whole place is gorgeous! They also have a kite festival at the end of August every year when they fly kites around the square.

What a beautiful city center square in Villa de Leyva. It's big and really impressive to take in. Be careful walking on the cobblestones since some can stick out a bit and cause you to trip.
The church is also located here along with shops and restaurants which are nice to stroll.
Watching the sunset here while having a drink is beautiful.

Amazing place, must visit. Lots of history on this plaza. Take the tour, (la chiva) 35,000 Colombian pesos. Anymore than that is not normal. Able to take your own drinks. 1h 20min tour.

It's kind of empty, but we apparently came in the off-season, which is in February. It's nice to have a drink on the rooftop bar, which oversees the courtyard. Also, on the day we went, it was a little cold.

This is THE place to spend the cool evenings in Villa de Leyva. Surrounded by awesome restaurants that are just perfect for people watching. Not to be missed (would be hard to do). Just sit at one of the restaurants or buy a couple of beers at the shop and sit on the stairs with all the youngsters. Good way to spend the night!

14000 square meters of cobblestone! Biggest cobblestone area in the area in Colombia? It’s big.
Had dinner in one of the open restaurants. Guitarist with a great voice and mellow love songs. It was a perfect evening.

Amazing ancient colonial city center, with church at one cide, well in the center of the square, a lot of ancient- look buildings around. Many restaurants and cafeterias, shops with antique staff and artistic products. One of the best sites I have seen in Colombia.

What a wonderful town with a spectacular square. There are a lot of tourist shops but when you go on a weekday it's pretty quiet. Prices are low. For example: 4 coffee is 12000 pesos.

It's cobble stone streets are just brilliant. The white color of each facade makes of this village an amazing spot for a marathon of pictures and selfies. We laid down on the grass to chill and had some tasty chocolate of the Museum of Chocolate.
